BELLEVUE Haworth Park

t’s easy to feel right at home in Nebraska’s oldest settlement—and Sarpy County’s largest city. Originating as a fur-trading post in 1822, Bellevue earned its name from trappers who admired the city’s “beautiful view” of the wooded bluffs surrounding the majestic Missouri River. While certainly a lot has changed over the years, this remarkable view remains. One prime location is Haworth Park, where recreational trails wind along the riverfront and lead into western Sarpy County and Omaha. Adjacent to Haworth is the American Heroes Park featuring a 9-11 Memorial, the Heroes Plaza, a pond featuring a fountain and fishing pier, and various paths for outdoor enthusiasts. Bellevue is one of the fastest-growing communities in the nation. Home to more than 60,000 residents and the 55th Wing and U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base, the city is bustling with residential and commercial growth, sparking the creation of several new shopping and dining destinations. Stella’s Bar & Grill is a down-to-earth staple in Bellevue, known for hand-pressed burgers served on paper napkins and fresh-cut fries. Since 1936, they have prided themselves on making the best burger you’ll ever eat. So much so, they’ve been named Omaha’s Best Burger seven years in a row. In 2014, they were also named the best burger in the state. The Bellevue culinary scene is thriving with local favorites satisfying every craving whether it be BBQ, Asian, Italian, Mexican, Soul Food or good old American.

“Great little museum packed with historical information and things to see. We loved it and will be back again!”

Not to be forgotten is Bellevue’s commitment to heritage and civic pride. Here, you can see Nebraska’s oldest church, the Old Presbyterian Church, and oldest public commercial building, the Old Fontenelle Bank, both built in 1856. The city also maintains a 1830s log cabin, the Southern Railroad Depot, and the Sarpy County Historical Museum, featuring hundreds of artifacts and dozens of historical displays.

GRETNA

Holy Family Shrine

retna is a charming and scenic community, declared home by many people for its proximity to Lincoln, Omaha, and several great attractions in between. The city originally sprang from an old Irish immigrant settlement called Forest City when the Burlington Railroad began laying down tracks in the area. Legend has it that Gretna was named by the railroad for the Gretna Green Community in Scotland.

Nebraska Crossing Outlets

The community is perhaps best known for the Nebraska Crossing Outlets along Interstate 80 and is the Midwest's No. 1 outlet shopping destination. The area features over 80 new-to-the-market retail brands like Michael Kors, Coach, PUMA, Polo Ralph Lauren, The North Face, Kate Spade, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Bradley, Under Armour, Nike, Brooks Brothers, Cole Haan, Steve Madden, and countless more.

In the fall, thousands of visitors descend upon Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard, a family-owned-farmturned-mini-amusement-park dedicated to the Halloween holiday. Some attractions include the Lost Pumpkin Mine and Tumbling Rock Cavern, a pumpkin-eating dragon, the Pirate Maze, a train, and hayrack rides.

Schramm Education Center

« On Nebraska Highway

31, travelers can drop down to low gear and enjoy the scenery. Along this route you will find Schramm Park near the banks of the Platte River. The park offers tremendous views of the surrounding countryside, wildlife, and seemingly endless horizon. The park also features several miles of hilly trails and limestone paths, as well as the Schramm Education Center. This state of the art attraction, formerly known as the Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium, teaches about Nebraska’s aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems through a variety of unique and interactive exhibits. It features renovated and expanded aquariums featuring Nebraska aquatic habitats, seventeen live animal tanks featuring Nebraska’s reptile and amphibian species, and a bird watching area. A virtual reality mountain biking experience gives visitors an opportunity to “ride” the trails on an actual bike. For a fun family festival, visit Gretna Days on Main Street. The annual July event includes a car show, hog roast, tractor pull, dance, and parade.

Another peaceful, and often moving, retreat is the Holy Family Shrine, situated on 23-acres overlooking I-80 and the Platte Valley. The Holy Family Shrine is glasswalled, with supports holding up its 45-feet-tall roof. A man-made stream bubbles along a path cut near the walkway to the entrance and then in the floor of the nave. The idea for the shrine was hatched in 1993, and a series of miracles led to the acquisition of property and building of the shrine, which opened in 2002. SARPY

La Vista Sports Complex

“Clean park, well maintained fields, excellent playground that is closed in for the kids.” The city’s name, Spanish for “The View,” came about in the early 1960s because the first homes were built overlooking the floodplain of the Big Papillion Creek. That area is now the La Vista Sports Complex. One of the premier facilities in the Omaha area, it hosts the national Triple Crown SlumpBuster Baseball Tournament each year, welcoming thousands of people to La Vista and Sarpy County. This beautiful city-owned sports complex is home to four softball fields, a baseball field, 12 soccer fields, two football fields, and concession stands.

While in La Vista, make sure to visit the Nebraska Brewing Company Brewery and Tap Room, an airy alehouse with an industrial feel where they brew their own beer and serve a menu of delicious American grub. You can also check out some of La Vista’s other amazing breweries like Kros Strain Brewing or Lucky Bucket Brewing Company as well as Cut Spike Distillery and Patriarch Distillers.

« The long-awaited, mixed-use La Vista City Centre is rapidly progressing along

the 84th Street Corridor. This 34-acre property will be home to a variety of local and national restaurants and bars, retail shopping, residential and commercial properties as well as an indoor/outdoor music venue. One of the new venues is locally owned Heights Draft Room, a craft beer bar with over 30 rotating taps of local, national, and international craft beers along with a diverse selection of bottled beer as well as wine and cocktail options. Heights Draft Room’s “mission is to expand the knowledge and appreciation for craft beer through exceptional selection, service, and community involvement. Heights will distinguish itself by creating a relaxed atmosphere to congregate, unwind, catch up with old friends, and make new ones.” Other concepts that may be coming to the development include a BBQ restaurant, Ice cream shop, a Tex-Mex location, an Asian restaurant, and a night club. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you might be drawn to the city’s miles of walking trails surrounded by lush landscaping and mature oak and maple trees. Twelve city parks offer prime real estate for picnicking and playing Frisbee. The redevelopment projects along 84th Street are transforming this corridor into an area with a distinct identity, a rich mix of uses and destinations, and a sense of community and high quality of life. The new Civic Center Park is an exciting piece of this new 84th Street Corridor and officially opened to the public in September of 2019. With the beautiful fountain as the centerpiece and the array of activities planned for the site, this public space will become an iconic park for all of the community. The master plan calls for illuminated pathways, interactive water, an amphitheater with flexible seating, and a large open lawn perfect for festivals such as the Annual Fall Festival held in late July. The final project will include a boat house and boat launching area as well as a sculpture garden for all to enjoy. SARPY

If wine and art sound like a fine combination to you, then Springfield is the place to be. Don’t miss Soaring Wings Vineyard, the labor of love of a former Air Force pilot and a current pilot—hence its name. The winery presently produces a variety of red and white wines, some of which have won prizes in international competitions. Grab a glass and head to the tasting room for French bread, cheese, and wine with an incredible view.

Two acres of formal and informal gardens filled with whimsical wonders!

Weiss Studios and Gardens

Not far from the vineyard, two acres of formal and informal gardens feature the work of local, regional, and national artists at Weiss Studios and Gardens. There, proprietor and sculptor Carl Weiss blends centuries-old practices with modern techniques to create sculptures, fountains, furnishings, and more. Be sure to also make a stop at Springfield Artworks, a boutique, working studio, and gallery, featuring millinery, surface design, wearable and fiber art, bold contemporary glass art, glass etching, awards and recognition pieces, jewelry, and mixed media.

MoPac Trail

« The MoPac Trail in Springfield

is an integral component of what is planned to be a more than 50-mile recreational trail between Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska's two largest cities. Nearly the entire route rests on an abandoned Missouri Pacific Railroad corridor—hence the trail's name. The highlight of the trail is the half-mile-long railroad bridge that the trail uses to cross the Platte River called the Lied Platte River Bridge. SARPY

Bellevue: Where the good life keeps getting better It’s easy to feel right at home in Nebraska’s oldest settlement—and Sarpy County’s largest city. Originating as a fur-trading post in 1822, Bellevue earned its name from trappers who admired the city’s “beautiful view” of the wooded bluffs surrounding the majestic Missouri River.

Gretna: Where the welcome mat is always set out The city originally sprang from an old Irish immigrant settlement called Forest City when the Burlington Railroad began laying down tracks in the area. Legend has it that Gretna was named by the railroad for the Gretna Green Community in Scotland. But no one knows for sure.

Papillion / La Vista: Where progress is inevitable . . . and beautiful According to legend, fur trappers who came upon the area stumbled upon thousands of butterflies flying in the sunlight, causing one member of the exploring party to exclaim “Papillon!”—the French word for butterfly. La Vista is Nebraska’s youngest and fastest-growing city. La Vista also happens to be the second city in Sarpy County to be named for its setting, adopting the Spanish translation for “the view.”
