n the mood to partake in a little culture, some good conversation, and enjoy a bit of drink? You might want to venture downtown for the Old Market’s new monthly onenight art event. New BLK (pronounced black), a creative think tank to promote innovation, progress and creativity, build community, open minds, and foster lively conversation, is helping stir up local artists, galleries, and businesses with the launch of First Fridays. On the first Friday of every month, local art galleries are working together to further build connections in the Omaha art community. Buyers meet buyers, artists meet artists, and the art fan has the op-
downtown story portunity to mingle with all of them while enjoying a cocktail and even a finger food or two. “We committed ourselves in opening shows on the first Friday of a month and then lobbied other galleries to join in,” said Shane Bainbridge of New BLK. Tom Harnack of the Omaha ClayWorks has been enjoying the benefits of an underground First Friday for the past two years. “Going out to Kansas City and Denver and seeing the vitality of First Fridays makes sense to me. It’s about local art, local food, and local music. It’s not a pub crawl. It’s about building culture.” Local glass artist Julie Conway of Illuminata in Benson is optomistic about the impact this type of event can have. “I think the First Fridays raise public awareness of the amount of creative artists that choose to live in Omaha, and it helps the galleries build their mailing lists for potential buyers. It is also a good way to plan for a social night out and see a lot of art in one evening.” Omaha is by no means shorthanded in the amount of galleries and variety of talent it has to offer, but often many artists are left undiscovered in their corners of the city. Shawn Bainbridge of New BLK thinks First Fridays “open up dialogue and collaboration with the creative talent that lives here. It seemed that everyone from fine art to designers, writers, photographers, and videographers could benefit from a synergized approach to bringing attention to what they are up to. Brother Shane adds, “Really what we are standing for is we believe strongly that there is a lot more room for collaboration in the creative world in Omaha. There is no shortage of artists in this town and I think it rivals the music scene everyone knows about. We really do believe that through collaboration comes better things.” Buf Reynolds, fashion designer and co-owner of Retro Rockets, is enthusiastic for the First Friday shows and the involvement with Omaha’s community. “The first show was in December and everybody was inviting. It’s not a daunting experience and it brings a great number of people out walking around and getting involved with all of the different shows. It was so exciting. I love Omaha. It’s my home.” “Our hope would be that over the course of the next six to eight months, we can establish that the first Friday of the month you know that a cultural smorgasbord is going on. We have eight galleries participating, six of which are within three or four blocks of ours. It basically turns the Old Market into a one-night art event.” This season’s First Fridays are underway, so join in the fun and get your walking shoes on or grab a ride from the downtown ped-cab for a guided tour. It won’t even cost you—gallery admissions are free. Check out the participating galleries (both in and outside of downtown) and other event information at www.omahafirstfriday.com.

Spokes-Person Los Angeles transplant Carlos Morales is the man who will shape Omaha’s two-wheeled future by Brian S. Allen | Photos by minorwhitestudios.com
ot many people look at the future of Omaha and compare it to Los Angeles, but that’s the unique perspective that Carlos Morales brings to his position as Omaha’s first Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator. The city created the position in 2009 and appointed Morales in 2010. He comes well qualified. In Los Angeles, he worked for the Department of Transportation as Assistant Coordinator for Bicycle Outreach and Planning. Morales has a Master of Arts in Urban Planning: Transportation Planning from UCLA, and a Bachelor of Arts in International and Environmental Studies from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Penn.
cover story
“We are ready to take the next step forward to make Omaha a city that not only supports, but encourages, alternative modes of transportation, including bicycling and walking.” — Mayor Jim Suttle
On a local level, the Bike/Pedestrian position was made possible by public and private support from the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA), Alegent Health with Live Well Omaha, and the Douglas County Health Department through a federal grant. Morales’ charge is to enhance transportation planning to accommodate all users, but especially cyclists and pedestrians. According to the City of Omaha web-site, “Morales will be tasked with developing and managing policies and programs that further promote a multi-modal transportation network for Omaha. This includes, but is not limited to, trails and bicycle parking facilities, bike lanes, share lane markings, signage, bike racks, and enhanced crosswalks and signals.” Mayor Jim Suttle said hiring Morales made a significant statement that the city regards transportation as critical to the health of Omahans. “We are ready to take the next step forward to make Omaha a city that not only supports, but encourages, alternative modes of transportation, including bicycling and walking,” Suttle said. “With the support of our partners, the city will have the ability to further incorporate the needs of all citizens into local and regional transportation planning and promote a healthy community.” Suttle noted that Morales will work with the many technical

and advisory transportation stakeholders, including local governments and regional partners, such as MAPA and Metro (formerly MAT). As transportation costs continue to rise and an emphasis is returned to the local communities, infrastructural improvements are essential in keeping Omaha a desirable city of the future, Morales says. “I’m making the case for bicyclists and pedestrians for the City of Omaha at a regional level so that we can place Omaha first in line when it comes to dispersing funds,” Morales says. “When we disperse the money for projects, I really want to make sure we are considering the best use of our funds. Is it better to widen all of our arterial roads, or to improve a balanced network where people have the freedom to chose how they get around our city?” Where Los Angeles comes in is that Morales has seen what happens in a major metropolitan area when alternate transportation isn’t made a priority. He doesn’t want similar transportation problems to what plague L.A. to become part of Omaha’s future. “I know the problems in L.A., and I see the potential that Omaha has. We can totally avoid the clogging of our streets with traffic and congestion and make it a wonderful place for people to live,” Morales said. Besides creating his position, Morales sees other signs that Omaha is getting more into the bicycle habit, which makes it an opportune time to make an impact in his role. “This whole biking thing is fairly new to the city,” he said. “It hasn’t become part of the traditional maintenance. I am trying to get them to recognize and see why we want to keep bike lanes and trails clear. Many of our schools are within a half mile of our trail system, and I am working with parks and recreation to help make sure the trails stay clear so the kids can actually use them to get to school.” Winter does, of course, pose an obstacle to Omaha’s twowheeled future and is something Morales was still getting used to last January. “I am still not very acclimated to the weather. A lot of my commuting clothes are very Los Angeles specific, short-sleeved jerseys, and a lot of shorts. I have not transitioned completely, but I am figuring it out.” When the weather improves, Morales plans to bike to work at least two or three time a week. So Omahans may spot Morales bicycling to and from Benson, which is where he lives and plans to reside for some time while he helps change the transportation culture of Omaha. “I’m not just here visiting. I bought a house with my wife and I want to make this place better.” More information on Omaha’s master transportation plan can be found at www.cityofomaha.org/tmplan.

ne of Omaha’s hottest restaurants is a small diner that is quite unlike anything else in town. With an obscure location definitely off the beaten pat, and a menu with a noticeable lack of trans fats and cheeseburgers, Daily Grub offers a fresher take on diner fare. Think comfort food without the grease, where vegetables take a staring role instead of being relegated to side-dish status. Nestled in a working-class neighborhood, inside what used to be a bar on the corner of 20th and Pierce, this is the kind of place where the menu changes weekly and the cook behind the counter is often the owner, Elle Lien. Daily Grub opened last April and is fast approaching its first anniversary—a definite milestone for a restaurant opened during a recession. Perhaps even more impressive is that while Omaha is generally considered a steak-loving town, this is one restaurant with no meat or dairy on the menu. Ever. Lien admits that occasionally, someone will leave when they realize there are no burgers on the the encounter | march/april 2011 15
downtown dining menu, but happily reports that for the most part, people new to this kind of cooking stick around and give it a try. In fact, Lien says, “I would guess 85 to 90 percent of the people who eat here are not vegetarians.” So what exactly is this kind of cooking? Lien describes her restaurant as a farm-to-table whole foods diner. Most food served at Daily Grub spent time in the ground or on a tree, and requires no processing or preservatives to make it palatable. When fruits and vegetables are in season, all of the produce is bought from urban farmers in Nebraska and Iowa, traveling less than 50 miles to the table. Bread and sopes (corn flour patties) are purchased from Omaha bakeries, and coffee is bought from a roaster in Lincoln. Since the menu choices are season-based, what is fresh Daily Grub owner Elle Lien. will somehow fill the menu. During the winter months, Lien purchases organic produce from local grocery stores, and utilizes canned and frozen vegetables prepared when
the crops were still bountiful. Not used to eating such healthy fare? Don’t let the word healthy keep you from checking it out. Just because their food is good for you doesn’t mean all they serve are plates of broccoli and salad. Two items that often appear on the changing menu are the popular black bean soup, and banh mi, a Vietnamese sub sandwich. And if you are not sure what to try, ask the cook. “I want to demystify food, break down the barrier between chef and food,” says Lien. She intentionally makes food approachable and hopes to inspire patrons to try cooking this way at home. In addition to its location and meatless menu, the other truly distinctive characteristic of Daily Grub is their grass-roots approach to marketing—they don’t even have a phone. The food speaks for itself, and Lien is more interested in social media than old-school landlines. The best way to reach her is online, where the menu is updated every Monday. Visit dailygrubomaha.com for more info.

Downtown Omaha has a variety of qualities that can appeal to all interests. Our parking system is not one of those qualities. Stand at any intersection in Downtown Omaha on a weekend or event night and you’ll see some of the effects of a public parking system that isn’t operating very efficiently or effectively. You see cars wasting gas looking for a “free” parking space, garages and surface lots sitting half empty, cars sitting for hours in front of your favorite restaurant, and residents having to walk blocks with groceries in hand. Those are just some of the reasons the DID along with MAPA, the City of Omaha, MECA, Downtown Omaha Inc., the Old Market Business Association, Omaha Performing Arts Society and the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce have selected Olsonn Associates and Walker Parking Consultants to study downtown’s parking system. The study, which kicked off in January, will provide recommendations that take into account the needs of various parking users and maximize the efficiency and usage of downtown’s current parking assets. The public’s input will play a critical part in this study. To find out how you can have your voice heard, check www.omahadowntown.org occasionally for more information. This column is part of a series detailing the activities and efforts of the Omaha Downtown Improvement District (DID) to further strengthen Downtown Omaha. You can find out more information about the DID on their website www.omahadowntown. org or by becoming a “Fan” on Facebook. the encounter | march/april 2011 25

harles Gifford and Michele Van Deventer have created a stir by leaving New York City for a fresh start in Omaha. This elegant married couple practiced architecture in the Big Apple. He headed his own firm and she was a principle with a big outfit. Now he’s back in his hometown while Van Deventer, a South Africa native and Princeton graduate, has adopted Omaha as her new home. Their distinctive storefront shop, B+T (Bath & Tile Corp.), 1727 Howard Street in the historic Flatiron Building, opened in October. B+T provides downtown a rare retail presence with arresting window displays. Their adjacent Flatiron Studio offers architectural-design services. The couple not only grew weary of Manhattan’s daily grind; they also desired a new adventure. Besides, as a member of an Omaha founding family, Charles didn’t want the Gifford name, which adorns a local park, camp, farm and foundation, to fade away. “I felt there was just the last bit of a narrative here,” he said. “It wasn’t so much to exploit it but to keep it going. You know, it’s such a shame to see a name disappear. My family wasn’t terribly wealthy...they just did a lot of stuff, and they were good people, interesting people. It is nice to connect up with that. It’s a pleasant thing to be a part of.” Even though Charles left Omaha as a young man to go east, where he earned his
feature
architecture degree at Harvard, the family’s Gifford Foundation brought him and Michele here for business over the years. They long admired the Old Market and saw promise in downtown. When they conceived the idea for the store three years ago, they began gradually resettling here, exploring opportunities, renewing old friendships and making new ones. Being part of a creative community they could impact attracted them. “I think for us it’s really wonderful to come to Omaha and to meet up with a bunch of people who care about the place as we do, and to have our finger right on the pulse of the town,” he said. The shop’s focus on high-end, designer bath fixtures grew out of his work overseeing fabulous projects involving extreme bathroom makeovers. He got to know the products and manufacturers. Since moving back, he’s established relationships with select local, national, and international vendors. Van Deventer said, “We both realized the bathroom probably is the first gesture many homeowners who buy and renovate feel the impulse to do. And when you look at the stuff, the faucets and what not, it’s like jewelry almost. It’s really beautiful, the materials and elements and textures. I mean, it’s just mechanically, exquisitely engineered.” Thus, B+T’s tag line -- “architecture for the bath.” Owing to this aesthetic, classic concentration, the couple say their wares marry well with gracious homes in old-line neighborhoods such as Fairacres and Dundee. A design emphasis extends to the shop itself, with its open, retrofit-feel panel displays, lighting system and work-sample table. Recycled materials are used throughout. Locating downtown was a given. “Everybody involved in the Old Market we know quite well,” said Gifford. “We still believe downtowns have character. We see the potential in downtown. We’re making a big bet on it. Someone’s got to. We really like the idea of coming down here and being first, and I hope we’re not the last.” They hope just as the Old Market is an arts-entertainment district, their shop-studio will encourage various designers to locate around them to form a design district. Trading Spaces Bozell’s search for a more creative space leads it to the Butternut building by Corey Ross | photo by minorwhitestudios.com ozell & Jacobs began the new year in a new space. When the marketing and public relations firm flipped on its computers in 2011, employees began work in the Butternut building downtown, 1022 Leavenworth St., instead of the Valmont building out west, where it had resided for 11 years. Corey Meyer, one of the three managing principals at Bozell, says the company had pondered a move for two years, but, even after looking at more than 40 possible locations, never found a suitable space, meaning one more conducive to creativity and collaboration than the standard office environment. Then Meyer and his partners were invited to explore the warehouse-like Butternut last fall, and the space formerly occupied by the Halo Institute, and Meyer says it was almost an instant fit.
feature “We loved the high ceilings and urban look,” he says. “And we thought we could make something out of it because of the openness of it.” That decision, and the support of the company’s 52 employees, prompted a move over two chaotic days around the first of the year. Meyer and his co-workers were still settling in the day of the interview and working out the kinks, such as getting all five furnaces working. “I think we have one working right now,” Meyer says, joking, “We’ll theoretically have some heat here momentarily.” The square footage – 10,000 feet – matched the usable area at Bozell’s old space, but otherwise the two offices have little in common. The new space doesn’t contain any offices. The principals
sit amongst their employees in an open-air environment. The dominant features of the space are three towering pods made of recycled wood. The pods serve as three of Bozell’s nine conference rooms. Meyer says the intimate pods serve a two-fold purpose. “We wanted additional meeting areas and also wanted to break the space from a visual standpoint,” he says. A move downtown made sense for Bozell for several reasons, Meyer says, one being that many of its staff reside in downtown, midtown or Dundee. Scott Bishop, Bozell’s director of social influence, is one of the downtown denizens. Bishop endorsed the move not only from a convenience standpoint, but also a creative one. He liked that Bozell’s new neighbors would be such Omaha creative catalysts as the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Kaneko and Nomad. “This will really help us be part of the creative community in Omaha,” he says. “Hopefully we’ll be able to put together a couple events at Nomad and places like that to play a role.” Bozell began as a downtown business when it was founded by Leo Bozell and Morris Jacobs in 1921. Meyer says that the return to downtown has been well received on all fronts. “You think in a move some people won’t be overly pleased,” he says, “but we’ve had resounding positive feedback.”

or the first time in its 30-year history, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts had gone oddly quiet … quiet, that is, if you could somehow manage to ignore the percussive din from a symphony of jackhammers, nail guns and power saws. Resident artists vacated their studios in November while the cavernous edifice, a former grocery warehouse, underwent major renovations driven by a $2.5 million capital campaign. The Bemis Center is the internationally acclaimed residency program, exhibition space and public art project-management nonprofit that has been a magnet for artists from six continents (sorry, Antarctica) who come to live and work in the program here in our fair city. That same “magnetism” has also resulted in the Bemis leaving an indelible mark on Omaha’s cultural landscape. “It’s an interesting and appropriate intersection, the capital campaign coinciding with the 30th anniversary,” said Mark Masuoka, now in his eighth year as executive director of the organization. “We’re opening spaces that haven’t seen the light of day in over 50 years,” he said of the process where ancient plywood covering upper-floor windows yield to row after row of shiny new glass.
downtown art Things are about to get even noisier at the 100,000-sq.-ft. facility. When artists return this month and throughout the year, they’ll christen five entirely new studios on the third floor. The build-out also means a 50 percent increase in the number of residency spots so coveted by artists across the planet. Just how coveted? The Bemis Center’s most recent jury session reviewed the work of over 1,000 applicants from 14 countries to fill 36 slots. The previous configuration had allowed for 24 artists to visit each year. A series of public events will introduce the retooled Bemis Center and changes that include an extensive overhaul of the Okada, the sculpture facility located across the brick-paved 12th Street. Look also for a new entrance approach to the main building. Contributing from afar to the Bemis Center’s success these past three decades is Christo, the New York-based artist known for such epic, site-specific works as wrapping the Reichstag in Berlin (1995) and The Gates (2005) in New York’s Central Park. Christo has been a Bemis Center board member almost from the beginning. “We’ve been very happy to support the Bemis Center and Omaha,” Christo said in a telephone interview from New York (the use of the plural above refers to his wife and project partner, Jeanne-Claude, who passed away in 2009). “They do visionary work there and it has been tremendously enjoyable for us to be a part of it.” Masuoka continued with the visionary theme: “This campaign is about looking forward to our next 30 years,” he said. “Our residents may come from all over the world, but it is that dual nature of who we are that is the most satisfying. We’re global in scope, but we also have an important local responsibility. As an arts organization right here in Omaha, Nebraska, we understand, support and embrace the local artist community and the community at large in making a difference in the cultural life of a city and its people.”
