DJ’s Dugout & Blazin’ Pianos

or locals or visitors looking to enjoy a fun night out, there might be no better destination than Omaha’s own DJ’s Dugout. And, with a new venue in North Downtown, Omahans can get their DJ’s fix at one of three locations. Standing prominently on the corner of 10th and Capitol, DJ’s Dugout is Omaha’s ultimate sports bar. Occupying over 11,000 square feet, the restaurant boasts forty 50-inch plasma televisions, eight high-definition big-screen projectors, and an awe-inspiring 103-inch plasma television. And, for those that might not be interested in the big game, DJ’s also features Keno and an extensive menu of burgers, sandwiches, and steaks. “We have a phenomenal Saturday and Sunday football following,” says Sunni Renner, general manager of DJ’s Dugout Downtown. “The area needed us. There’s not a true full-blown sports bar down here. And we have every TV sports package. It doesn’t matter what you want to watch, we’ll get your game on. That’s what sets us apart.” The downtown location is also sure to draw a big College World Series crowd this June, as fans pop in

to catch televised games or get a reprieve from the sun and heat. DJ’s Dugout has a storied history, having been a popular Omaha hotspot for nearly 20 years. In 1993, owner Darwin Hansen bought the Scorecard on 25th and Cornhusker in Bellevue and changed the name to DJ’s Dugout. Six years later, he bought the Scorecard on 114th and Dodge, which would become the second DJ’s location. In 2009, Hansen moved the Bellevue location to a new building on 23rd and Cornhusker. And, in January, 2011, Hansen unveiled the third and biggest DJ’s Dugout in the quickly developing NoDo district. Omaha’s only dueling piano bar. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, patrons can watch as professional players from across the country face each other and honor requests from the crowd. “Fridays and Saturdays are packed,” says Renner. “On Thursdays, we often rent out the Piano Bar for private parties, at no charge. And, there’s a removable wall between DJ’s and Blazin Pianos that allows for perfect sound in both areas.” Just like it says on the Blazin’ Pianos website, expect a “fast-paced, high-energy rock and roll improv show featuring the best dueling piano players from all over the country.” “We play largely classic rock covers,” describes Keith Allen, the entertainment director for DJ’s Dugout and a regular performer at Blazin’ Pianos. “But once in a while, a rap or hip-hop song will come up.” A Florida native, Allen started playing piano at age 16. By 18, he was successfully dueling in Atlanta’s competitive music scene. Allen schedules all the entertainment for DJ’s Dugout, flying in the performers from different parts of the U.S. “Anything that has to do with pianos is my job, and I’ve got the best job in the world,” he explains. “As a performer, I typically rotate between the downtown and 114th locations. The crowds are different at each location, which makes it all the more interesting.” Without question, DJ’s Dugout is one of the premier hangouts in Omaha. “All three locations are thriving,” shares Renner. “We love our customers, and look forward to many more years in Omaha. Architects of Air highlights Sight & Sounds: An Unprecedented Week of Wonder at Midtown Crossing story by David Williams

t has for decades been the vehicle that fuels a particularly popular genre of family fun. Such iconic figures as Mickey, Snoopy and, more recently, the impish Stewie (of Family Guy fame) have wafted their way through the concrete canyons of New York City in the great tradition that is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade while their more earthbound inflatable cousins have long been a familiar mainstay at fairs and school carnivals. Now the power of hot air will again take on larger-than-life proportions with the June 23rd arrival of Architects of Air, the centerpiece of Midtown Crossing’s Sight & Sounds: An Unprecedented Week of Wonder. The Architects of Air “luminarium” is a monumental inflatable structure that will rise in Midtown Crossing’s Turner Park. More than a stunning visual treat, the luminarium offers an experience of total immersion in an 11,000-square-foot labyrinth of tunnels punctuated by towering domes. Each visit to Architects of Air promises a unique rainbow tableau as its panels of specially produced plastic surfaces filter the day’s weather conditions to render an ever-changing array of ethereal hues that subtly morph in response to the gentle interplay of sun and cloud, light and shadow. It is “an architecture that is somewhere between a womb and a cathedral,” said Alan Parkinson, the designer and founder of the British-based Architects of Air. Residing at the unlikely intersection of Gothic sensibilities juxtaposed against Islamic elements, the awe-inspiring maze, he added, “Very quickly takes people into another world.” The “sounds” half of Sight & Sounds: An Unprecedented Week of Wonder will be delivered through an eclectic mix of under-the-stars reveries in a series of free Turner Park concerts and special performances featuring some of Omaha’s most notable music acts and other stage talents. The effort is collaboration between Midtown Crossing and

the Nebraska Arts Council. e all know that bicycling is good for us and that it can be a fun activity, too. But did you know that Omaha now has a giant bike that really is a party on wheels? It’s called Omaha Patio Ride and it’s a great way to exercise while having fun! Patio Ride is a giant bike that holds up to 16 passengers and is perfect to rent out for your next event. The party bike is similar in concept to a party bus and is about the size of cargo van. Its average rate of speed is somewhere between five to eight miles per hour. Also known as a pedibus, cycle pub, beer bike, or bierbike, the Patio Ride is a multi-passenger, human-powered vehicle. The passengers provide the pedaling while a driver does the steering. Pretty awesome, isn’t it? “A barista can be requested, but most of the time, it’s a participant that does the serving. People bring their own refreshments and drinks. You can bring pretty much whatever you like. It is all about having a good time in one of the best areas for ambiance, the Old Market,” states A.C. Clouthier, one of the owners. Human-powered party bikes have been in use for decades in many countries around the world and have grown into several families of vehicles for a variety of purposes, including tourist rentals and private touring. The Patio Ride is fairly new to Omaha. “We brought the Patio Ride to the Old Market area last summer and have been getting rave reviews from the public,” says A.C. Ownership is really a group of guys to include brothers Kevin, Matt, and Kent Letnes, and of course, A.C. Clouthier. ucked away at the bottom of Jones Street in the Old Market sits a cozy pair of adjoining businesses where friends and students alike gather for hours on end. On a warm and sunny Friday afternoon at Aromas Coffeehouse, a handful of fresh-faced, college-age students have hunkered down here with their technological gear in tow. Laptops on, smart phones out, earbuds in and, of course, coffee cups close at hand. Autumn Pruitt is among the crowd, looking very much like these young adults. And she is. At age 25, Pruitt isn’t much older than these caffeinated patrons. Only difference is, Pruitt’s the owner. Wearing her signature apron, her brown hair tied back in a ponytail, Pruitt has made Aromas—and the neighboring Bliss Bakery—her home-away-from-home for a handful of years. A 2005 graduate of Omaha North High School, Pruitt grew up in a family of bakers. Her fond childhood memories feature hours spent in the kitchen alongside her mom and grandparents. Pruitt

credits her mother for her bravery in the kitchen. “If you can follow directions, you can bake,” Pruitt says of her mom’s advice. At Milligan College in Tennessee, Pruitt majored in business and humanities. She and her husband, Luke, wed in 2007 and moved back to their roots and their families in Omaha. Before it was Bliss Bakery, it was Bickford Bakery, which is where Pruitt began down the flour-coated, sugar-sweetened path to eventually become the small business owner she is today. Pruitt eventually purchased Bickford and renamed it Bliss Bakery. bakery items, Bliss has something for virtually any sweet tooth. The shop also features gluten-free options for the health-conscious or those with food allergies. Last summer, Pruitt assumed ownership of Aromas Coffeehouse next door. The business pairing seemed purely natural. The past few years have been a whirlwind for Pruitt and her husband, who, when he’s not at Aromas or Bliss, works full-time as the music minister for StoneBridge Christian Church near 156th and Fort streets. Pruitt lends her singing voice to the church’s choir on Sundays, and enjoys gardening and running when time permits. The couple also finds time to spend with their two rabbits, Jojo and Asher. When the couple moved home to Omaha, they bypassed the expanding suburbs of West Omaha for the neighborhood of 40th and Ames streets. It’s where Pruitt grew up, attending Florence Elementary School and, later, McMillan Magnet Center as a young girl. Pruitt says she often experiences a reaction of raised eyebrows when folks learn of her (new) home base. “We wanted to be in the heart of the inner city,” she explains. “There has been a lot of flight to the suburbs [in Omaha], but we absolutely love our neighborhood. There’s a lot of good people and great restaurants. Plus, we really like our house.” Moving home to North Omaha has allowed Pruitt to reconnect with old friends and even her former teachers from Florence and McMillan. But Pruitt’s reach extended well beyond Omaha (and Nebraska) when, last year, she and fellow baker Kacie Burkum appeared on the Food Network program Cupcake Wars. While Bliss Bakery didn’t survive until the end, Pruitt says the experience was wonderful and even yielded customer calls from around the country. readonlinenow.com

he San Francisco Giants have their “Splash Zone,” where home run balls that land in McCovey Cove are saved from a watery grave by a flotilla of kayakers jostling with nets to retrieve a soggy souvenir. Now TD Ameritrade Park and its NCAA Men’s College World Series will have the “Cone Zone,” a place where Ruthian blasts down the right field line could become, on the luckiest of bounces, the perfectly scoop-shaped topper for a waffle cone. After a one-year sabbatical away from baseball, the ice cream and burger legend is again assuming its rightful place within earshot of the ping of aluminum bats, as Zesto opens its new location in the shadow of TD Ameritrade Park at the corner of 12th and Mike Fahey streets. “We’re proud to carry on our tradition with the College World Series,” said Zesto co-owner Mike Kelley, “and are excited to launch new traditions for all of Omaha and our thousands of friends who visit us every year from all over the country.” Not your grandfather’s humble, Rosenblatt Stadium-anchored Zesto, the new location is a $3 million project and a two-story affair that features an expanded bar-and-grill menu, a seasonal Blatz Beer Garden, and even live music on special readonlinenow.com

Even before the first pitch can be thrown in the 2012 edition of the baseball classic, Zesto’s much-anticipated No-Do arrival has already registered with a national audience. “It was really tough last year without Zesto being within sight of the stadium,” explained ESPN baseball analyst Kyle Peterson. The Elkhorn native twice led the Stanford Cardinal to CWS appearances in the ‘90s before going on to pitch for the Milwaukee Brewers. “A highlight every year in the ESPN booth is when Zesto sends over some goodies, and they are also a huge favorite with our crew in the truck. If my voice seems a bit garbled at times during this year’s broadcast, it’s a good bet that there’s a straw and a Zesto shake to blame.” Now in its seventh decade as a pilgrimage destination for generations of baseball fans on “The Road to Omaha,” the American-as-apple-pie soundscape at Zesto will once again include the crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd.

in Room chef/owner Ryan Gish has a zen for global fare, and it’s reflected in the menu of his Downtown Omaha restaurant. The eatery’s “Americana fusion” cuisine spans the globe. The menu takes dinners from the Mediterranean to Mexico to the Middle East to the Far East in the form of pastas, enchiladas, hummus, bruschetta, tempura shrimp and lettuce wraps. Classics like shrimp scampi take on a Japanese twist with the addition of miso. Steaks, burgers, chicken, and seafood round out the American-meets-international menu. Located at Hotel Deco XV, the Zin Room opened in May 2011 at 316 S. 15th St. The 165-capacity restaurant boasts a contemporary, cosmopolitan design that Gish called a “big city look” that reminds some of his patrons of finedining establishments in New York. “It’s a very nice atmosphere, but we don’t charge the steakhouse prices,” Gish says. “We’re not fine dining, but we’re not super casual.” Throughout the Zin Room’s main floor and upstairs mezzanine, the ambiance is elegant and inviting, chic yet cozy. Details like natural stone, dark wood, warm earth tones, a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, and custom art glass chandeliers over the bar combine for a sophisticated, relaxing atmosphere. The clientele is a mix of hotel guests, downtown residents, business travelers, and locals who frequented Gish’s previous

It hosts live entertainment, wine dinners and cooking classes. The restaurant’s “7 for $7” lunch specials have become popular with many downtown office workers. Gish, 30, learned to cook at a young age. He grew up in the Blair, Neb.,-area and later moved to Omaha as a teen. He credits his Italian background with instilling in him a love for cooking. Growing up on a farm, he adds, gave him an appreciation for fresh produce. “I was always spending time in the kitchen,” Gish says. “That’s where I always wanted to be.” At 15, he bussed tables at a local restaurant. When his bosses discovered his knack for cooking, they moved him into the kitchen. After high school, Gish attended culinary school at the Art Institute of Colorado in Denver before moving back to Omaha. He owned and operated Prestige Bistro & Catering in 2005 and 2006. He then worked as executive chef at his family’s Prestige World Class restaurant and lounge. In fall 2008, he opened his own place, Ryan’s Bistro, which Omaha-based Restaurants Inc., purchased last year. Our flower and tree plantings add a pleasant and attractive amenity to our streetscapes, and the DID Security Patrol keeps an eye out for your good. Visitors new to the area will soon benefit from the installation of Wayfinding Signage that directs pedestrians to our many event venues and attractions. There is also the potential to implement a bike-sharing program similar to those found in Denver, Chicago, and locally at Aksarben Village. Our public spaces, parks, and riverfront offer a nearby alternative to the urban environment, and the DID’s activation efforts provide enjoyable activities and programs nightly (Mon-Thurs) in the Gene Leahy Mall. Construction on the aquarium began last October and included the replacement of many of the finishes and details of the exhibit space, including interpretive graphics, video, air-handling systems, carpeting, ceilings, and lighting. Other new features, such as special lighting, curved wave walls, and wider paths have been incorporated into the design to improve the experience and traffic flow. The renovation also included a gift shop redesign. “Parts of the original aquarium [circa 1995] had become very dated or worn,” said Pate. “Other parts never really realized their full potential due to budget restrictions at the time, and we had a much-underutilized entry. I’m very happy with the renovation. It feels like a totally different aquarium—almost brand new.” Other additions to the aquarium designed to add educational value include: a 500-gallon Tide Pool Touch Tank stocked with anemones, starfish, and urchins, allowing visitors supervised hands-on access; Open Oceans, a 40-foot racetrack tank with schooling fish; a Staff Picks area, featuring six tanks displaying animals that aquarium staff have chosen for their special interest; an Ocean Drifters area featuring five species of jellyfish; and an Eel Reef, complete with four varieties of eels. “The most-loved exhibits—penguins and the shark tunnel—remain with some modest enhancements, while many of the other exhibit areas will seem completely new,” Pate said. “An eight-zone sound system and five large photo murals add to the immersive feel of the entire aquarium.” Other exhibits within the aquarium include (some with minor updates or additions): the Cold Pacific Waters, Tropical Beaches, Ocean Birds, Saving the Reef, Scuba Reef, and Amazon River. readonlinenow.com
