Old Market Pioneer DAN EMANUEL AND HIS 30-YEAR SAGA by David Williams photography by Bill Sitzmann

T

HE PHALANX OF construction barriers standing guard over so

many properties in the Old Market is testimony to the city’s embrace of urban living. The Downtown skyline is now interrupted by an ever increasing array of towering cranes, ones that mirror the eerie angles of gigantic praying mantises straight out of some low budget, ‘50s-era sci-fi flick.

But it wasn’t always that way. Dan Emanuel, who has lived in the same loft along 14th Street for three decades, is something of an Old Market pioneer. “This is just a little project of mine,” Emanuel quips. “It just happens to have been spread out over 30 years, but I think it’s finally shaping up into something… real, something that works for me,” he adds in a tone of understatement. Emanuel owns the historic Medlar Building at 416 S. 14th Street. He operates his business, Emanuel CS, out of the stately building’s main floor and leases offices to other enterprises on the site that was originally built as a tavern in 1903 by the Storz Brewing Company. Lost to the dusty recesses of history is the fact that the tavern never materialized, and two years later the building was purchased by the Medlar printing and publishing company. Emanuel lives on the third floor of the Classic Revival building designed by noted architect Joseph Guth, whose other area gems include the striking Prague Hotel at 13th and William streets.

The latest chapter in Emanuel’s 30-yearsaga came recently when he took over an adjoining apartment in a wall-busting expansion that now has him occupying the entirety of the building’s uppermost floor. He says that he did a good amount of the construction work himself over time, but he partnered with interior designer Julia Russell to ensure that the new areas blended seamlessly with his existing living quarters. An eclectic mix of Mission furniture is punctuated by complementary pieces in a variety of Mission-friendly genres. A Chinese tea chest sits next to a decidedly Atomic Age Eames lounge chair that is not far away from a Chippendale-inspired side table. The sculptural lines of a small army of houseplants form a foundation that both grounds and punctuates Emanuel’s collection of contemporary art. A dramatic spiral staircase leads to a handsome rooftop deck outfitted in materials that are more hard-edged and industrial than those found below. A built-in bench

is executed in a lush Brazillian Ipe wood. Battleship gray Hardie board defines the deck’s perimeter, while corrugated steel cladding bolsters the platform’s entry area. “You never have to worry too much about lighting up here,” Emanuel explains in describing how neighboring buildings tend to cast their ambient glow over any late-night soiree in this coziest of al fresco entertaining areas. “This is a simpler way to live,” Emanuel explains. “I’ve seen so much change down here, but the basics remain the same. Living here means that I am within walking distance of so many of the great things the city has to offer; the arts and cultural venues, the Old Market restaurants, the parks, and now the riverfront.” Dan Emanuel has a commute of a mere 43 steps down a staircase to his office. Taking one more step out the front door places him squarely on the threshold of the Old Market and all of its energy, excitement, and urban-living amenities. Encounter SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014  9

TypecastRecast RESHAPING PUBLIC OPINION THROUGH PUBLIC ART by Kim Carpenter photography by Bill Sitzmann

W

E ALL DO it. See someone and come to snap judgments about who

they are. It might be because they’re dressed a certain way, talk a certain way, or come from a certain neighborhood. Typically, these judgments are negative and divide communities instead of uniting them.

Enter TypecastRecast, a public art project spearheaded by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which addresses bias and bigotry in the community, subtle and otherwise. Alan Potash, director of the regional office located in Omaha, talks about the project’s genesis in 2012. “Our board went through a strategic planning process with the goal to create a signature event to bring attention to the ADL and bring a dialogue to the community to combat bigotry through a variety of processes.” Several board members had experience with public art projects in cities like Kansas City and St. Louis, and Potash himself has an art background. For that reason, public art seemed ideally suited to combat stereotypes. “When you’re dealing with bigotry,” notes the director, “art starts those conversations.” ADL partnered with the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and issued a call for regional artists to submit proposals that would initiate dialogues. Over 50 artists responded, and 12 made it through the jury process. By the time the final selection process was finished in 2013, six artists were chosen, with one chosen at a sold out “People’s Choice” event at the Holland Center for Performing Arts. The artists included the two-man team Andrew Conzett and Ryan Fisher, Jarrod Beck, Charley Friedman, Jamie Burmeister, Avery Mazor, and Paige Reitz.

Reitz, program coordinator at the Union for Contemporary Arts and a social practice artist, built upon the People’s Choir, a monthly community sing-along event she had helped pioneer in Portland, Ore. For TypecastRecast she envisioned providing an outdoor place for community members to gather and sing. “When the call came out,” Reitz says, “I thought of the People’s Choir and how I could reimagine it in a public space with more presence.” Her installation “The Risers” features a semi-circle of tiered risers, and singalongs include familiar pop songs—such as the Beatles and John Denver—that are in the public consciousness and most people tend to know, many by heart. ART

The installation is situated along Cass Street between 12th and 13th streets in NoDo and runs through November. While the art is temporary, the ADL hopes to make a long-lasting impact on how people interact and treat one another. “Our goal,” says Potash, “is to help individuals understand and conquer their uneasiness. Our goal is for them to go beyond their feelings and change their behavior to be more respectful; and to change their perceptions.”  Encounter For more information visit typecastrecast.org.

MUSIC

Dereck Higgins PUNK PIONEER APPROACHES 60 by Matt Whipkey photography by Bill Sitzmann

O

N STAGE, DERECK Higgins performs

with the urgency and energy of someone a third his age. Off stage his work ethic rivals anyone in the music business. At the age of 59, the history of Omaha music rightfully places Higgins as an elder statesman. While Higgins resume spans the years, his myriad artistic and musical endeavors ensure his work remains as vital and contemporary as ever.

Born July 7, 1955, Higgins discovered the path his life would take on February 9, 1964. He was initially unaware that one of the four men seen in a fateful telecast that night shared his birthday as Ringo (born 15 years to the day before Higgins) and his mates stormed the Ed Sullivan Show stage. The iconic Beatles performance turned the music-obsessed 9-year-old into a rock and roll disciple. Higgins got a guitar and the obsession only grew. As a member of seminal ‘80s Omaha groups RAF and Digital Sex, Higgins’ impassioned approach to the bass

guitar cemented his place as a Midwestern music legend. A self-proclaimed outsider and punk rocker, Higgins was always aware his work spoke to the core of his identity: a black person from Omaha, Nebraska, playing in a genre where blacks were more that a little underrepresented. “I never wanted fame in the typical sense,” says Higgins. “I wanted to feel recognized. Being a black person growing up here through civil rights and all the racism I have dealt with, music saved me. Music is the way people can build a bridge.” Over the last decade alone, Higgins has released a dozen recordings. First gaining international exposure in Digital Sex, Higgins’ YouTube videos of his massive LP collection reached a worldwide base, one that soon began purchasing Higgins’ own recordings. Along with his individual work, Higgins lends his abilities to a new generation of artists as a collaborative and creative foil to the likes of musician/director Nik Fackler of InDreama.

From Nebraska to the Netherlands to New Zealand—with a Polish compilation appearance for good measure—Higgins is global. The musician was an inaugural resident artist at the Bemis Center’s Carver Bank program in 2013. The experience allowed Higgins, a former Community Alliance mental health specialist, the artist’s dream of working on one’s craft fulltime. Complementing countless live performances, international tours, and hundreds of compositions, the Carver Bank gig highlighted Higgins’ allegiance to the North Omaha community in which he was raised and still resides. That sense of community and interpersonal connection is, Higgins says, his true legacy. “I try to be real with everyone,” Higgins adds. “This music I make means something to me. I want it to mean something to you. I want to connect.”  Encounter Listen to the artist’s work at dereckhiggins.bandcamp.com.

Maud Boutique V I V I D V I N TA G E by Kara Schweiss photography by Bill Sitzmann

S

OME OF LYNN Mills’ fondest childhood

memories are of hours playing dress-up with all the pretty dresses, skirts, purses, and hats in her “beautifully put-together” Grandmother Larson’s walk-in closet. She topped off her ensembles with such accessories as the jewelry, handkerchiefs, and gloves from the bureau across the room. Mills outgrew the dress-up phase but never outgrew her fascination with vintage and vintage-inspired clothing and unique fashion.

In 2012, Mills opened Maud Boutique, named for Maud Amelia Josephine Johnson Larson, the grandmother whose closet inspired so many hours of childhood enchantment. The shop, located near 33rd and California, carries vintage fashions and accessories plus a selection of new pieces almost exclusively from small, independent

labels. The boutique also has an Etsy site. It’s a family affair, with Mills’ teen daughters and husband pitching in with various aspects of the day-to-day operations at the space located only blocks away from the family home in their beloved Gifford Park neighborhood. The century-old building itself is well-suited to the distinctive boutique, with period architecture, beautiful wood floors, and ample natural light. And like many of the fashions it houses, it has an interesting history, says Mills. “In the early ‘20s, it was a beauty school (California Beauty School) owned by Kathryn Wilson, an African-American,” Mills explains. “She wrote a beauty school textbook called The Successful Hairdresser. I like that the building is still in keeping with the feel and the vibe and the history of the space: a woman business owner featuring items that are unique and geared toward beauty and fashion.”

E N C O U N T E R   18

F E AT U R E

Maud Boutique’s vintage clothes are meant to be worn rather than collected, although many of them are special occasion pieces, and Mills works with a tailor to make repairs and otherwise restore pieces to their original beauty. “I see myself as a curator,” says Mills, who is also more likely to refer to herself as a shopkeeper rather than an owner or entrepreneur. “The vintage pieces in the shop are carefully chosen, and they usually have stories behind them. They’re fixed up and cleaned and presented in a beautiful space in a beautiful way.” Besides vintage, Mills’ boutique carries new fashions in sizes XS to 2X, both from such small local designer collections such as Fella Vaughn and Leah Casper (both featured at Omaha Fashion Week), and nationally known labels like Bernie Dexter, Pretty Birdie, Mata Trader, and Soul Carrier. Mills is also conscientious about supporting designers with fair trade and other ethical practices. “I need to know that they were made without unfairly exploiting people or natural resources,” she explains. Maud Boutique patrons range from college students to mature women, but her clientele shares one common characteristic, Mills says. They want something that’s one-of-a-kind. “Most of the people are looking for dresses for events,” she says. “Or they come in just looking for that something that’s really different, really unique.”  Encounter

HENEVER DENISE CHAPMAN

traverses the blight and decay that have scourged North 24th Street for upwards of 40 years, she can’t help but ask questions. From Cuming Street to as far north as Fort Street, what was once known as the “The Street of Dreams” in its halcyon days has remained pockmarked and disfigured from race riots dating back to the 1960s.

Chapman says she doesn’t understand why. “Those empty lots were burned down in a riot?” she asks. “Okay, well why didn’t something else go up?” she inquires, surrounded by stacks of envelopes and paperwork. “What happened next? Or, more importantly, why not next?” For the award-winning actor and education director of the Omaha Community Playhouse, these questions don’t require answers—at least not yet, Chapman says. Rather, they’re the underpinnings for what she calls “the right questions,” or questions born from art. That very sentiment earned Chapman a six-month residency at Carver Bank last May, where the over 30 but under 40-year-old has begun her most ambitious project to date—a play examining the 1969 Vivian Strong riots. “I didn’t think I was going to get in,” Chapman says before producing a roaring laugh. “I really didn’t. I went in and had one of my soap-box moments.” Located at the historic intersection of North 24th and Lake streets, Chapman’s Carver Bank performance space isn’t far from the former Logan Fontenelle Housing Project where Vivian Strong was shot and killed by an Omaha police officer 45 years ago.

firebombing of North 24th Street businesses. Chapman says the spirit of the community is still as scarred from the incident as is its landscape. “When a community implodes, if you don’t deal with the core issues of that implosion, they don’t ever really go away,” she says as her voice drops to a solemn half-whisper. “There’s always residue of that. So there’s still residue of mistrust between community and police. There’s still this sort of fleeing from the neighborhood. There’s still that ‘you know you’ve made it when you can move out’ stigma.”

“The possibility that we have as artists to affect real generational change — that’s why I’m in the work.” -Denise Chapman

Chapman, a “theatre practitioner who works with bodies and space,” is no stranger to writing plays that explore the plight her North Omaha hometown has endured. Last year, she adapted Euripides’ The Trojan Women as a vehicle to examine the community of women who are affected and left behind by the war on drugs. “The possibility that we have as artists to affect real generational change — that’s why I’m in the work,” Chapman says, pausing a moment to collect her thoughts. She can’t help but smile. “Art changes everything,” she beams. “It really does!”  Encounter

WILSON & WASHBURN A LITTLE NAUGHTY – A LOT OF NICE by David Williams photography by Bill Sitzmann

A

NNA WILSON’S BROTHEL made her

the “Queen of the Underworld” in Wild West Omaha before she bequeathed her fortune to charity. Josie Washburn—who would later write a book about her life between the sheets—was Anna’s top practitioner of the world’s oldest profession in the house of ill repute situated in what was then known as the city’s Sporting District—a festering cesspool of gambling, prostitution, and all manner of vice.

Today their infamous names (Wilson is pictured above) live on at Wilson & Washburn on Harney Street along the western edge of the Old Market. “We’re a neighborhood bar,” explains Jeff Luby, who owns the business with his wife, Faith. “We just happen to be one with a great selection of specialty beers, craft cocktails, and elevated bar food.” Because brothels once carried the euphemistic label of “comfort stations,” the owners incorporated that notion into the bar’s tagline, “A Serious Comfort Station.” “We specialize in comfort food,” Faith adds, “but with a twist. Nothing too fancy. Nothing overly pricey.”

Wilson & Washburn’s signature Beet Chips are a case in point when it comes to simplicity at its best. Wafer-thin slices of the vegetable are prepared in the same way as their potato-based cousins, but a splash of malt vinegar and a sprinkle of flaked salt transforms this most humble of dishes into something wholly—and yummily—“other.” Their not-your-grandma’s-Mac-and-Cheese boasts a carefully curated amalgam of Chevre, buffalo mozzarella, smoked Gouda, and bleu cheese in a truffle panko crust. The Rueben features brisket that is smoked on-site and is topped by house-cured sauerkraut and a beet horseradish sauce sandwiched between hearty Russian rye. Jeff says he’ll bet that diners will place his Fish & Chips against the best in town. And the Beet Burger (there’s that brightly hued orb again) is a favorite among vegans and meat-lovers alike. “Everything is made from scratch,” Jeff says before Faith adds, “Our food services truck deliveries are pretty light in their load here. We’re an easy stop for them. We don’t need from them what a lot of other restaurants choose to source from them. We have to, for example, get our milk from somewhere, but most everything coming out of our kitchen is of our own making.”

ORIGINALS Come discover these purveyors of unique and artful goods, found only in Omaha’s historic Old Market.

Holiday décor, unique ornaments and collectibles for every season.

Handmade chocolates and fudge plus many other sweet temptations.

Operating out of a 19th-century building that once housed a purveyor of rat poison, the mahogany-clad space uses subtle décor elements in a nod to whorehouse chic. A mezzanine-level private party space appropriately dubbed the Madam’s Lounge is demarcated by blood-red, damask curtains in a pattern that screams “bordello.” Vintage tintype photographs depict bygone bar patrons in frisky scenes that are naughty without being too risqué. The eerie bat motif once used to illustrate the cover of Washburn’s book, The Underworld Sewer: A Prostitute Reflects on Life in the Trade, is

replicated in the upper reaches of the building’s towering, curbside windows. The space, which opened a little over a year ago, has quickly become a favorite among the Orpheum Theater and Holland Performing Arts Center crowds. Whether as a place for a tastily accessible pre-show meal or for postcurtain noshing and conversation, Wilson & Washburn offers a vibe that is at once comfy and sophisticated—just like Anna Wilson’s legendary brothel.  Encounter

EBECCA STAVICK DOESN’T wear reading glasses dangling

from an old-timey, faux-jeweled lanyard. And she’s not so very big on “shhh-ing” patrons roaming the stacks of the W. Dale Clark Library, where she works in staff development. The Dewey Decimal System, formerly the bread and butter of any self-respecting library professional working in a space that Norman Cousins once called “a delivery room for the birth of ideas,” today elicits little more than a shrug and a “Meh” from Stavick. And she bears no resemblance to the tunefully frumpy Marian-the-Librarian from The Music Man.

The stereotype of librarians has changed greatly over the decades, just as has the increasingly digitized and web-based services that they provide. But Stavick’s passion for data—lots and lots of data—now extends far beyond the walls of the library system’s Downtown anchor facility. Last year Stavick co-founded Open Nebraska along with Omaha World-Herald reporter Matt Wynn, University of Nebraska-Lincoln software architect Nate Benes, and Bergman Incentives chief creative officer Mike Battershell.

The nonprofit advocates for and acts in the “open data” movement through what Stavick calls “civic hacking.”

“Think of all the government information that is out there,” Stavick says. “It’s often readily available, but is almost always in the form of raw and virtually unusable data. Put that in the hands of a talented developer and designer, and you end up with a tool that Nebraskans can not only easily access, but it is now in a form that has real meaning for advocacy, action, and other uses.”

Want to know how much time it takes to traverse the city using only public transportation? Check out Open Nebraska’s Transit Party hack. Looking for a single-source listing of the seemingly countless and disparate government and quasi-government boards that operate in Douglas County? There’s an app for that. Open Nebraska also promotes tech education in a variety of disciplines in support of a mission that aims to drive innovation and community engagement all across the state by making local information more accessible to the public. She has also taken her data-driven gig on the road. Last year Stavick hosted a session for the librarians, museum professionals, and other information specialists attending the South by Southwest festival. “I’m an information activist,” Stavick explains. “Libraries are among the most inclusive places on the planet because we serve anyone who walks through the door. We look to that same sort of goal—access to data for all—in our work at Open Nebraska.”

Award-winning food & wine list – open late nights a week. Stavick’s fave childhood book was a certain Shel7Silverstein classic. Now Call for reservations. her work with Open Nebraska promises access to data sets that she hopes will one day be as numerous as the leaves of The Giving Tree.  Encounter

Dr. James Salhany G U I TA R F R E T S A N D L A B O R AT O R Y P I P E T T E S by Kara Schweiss photography by Bill Sitzmann

H

E’S AN EXPERIENCED musician, composer and producer.

He’s a published poet. He’s a university scientist and medical researcher with widely recognized expertise in hematology and authorship or co-authorship of numerous academic papers.

Among other things. Whether you know him as Jim from the Old Market or Jimmy the musician or Dr. James Salhany, Jim Salhany is a dynamic, amazingly multifaceted individual who manages to find a perfect balance between his highly scientific and prolifically creative halves. “I don’t sleep much,” Sakhany says, wryly. But he insists there’s no magic to how he manages to integrate his many interests into the same 24 hours the rest of us have each day; it’s just how he is. “For me, there was never a time when I didn’t have the humanities and science, to various degrees, as part of my life,” he explains. “I was born in Detroit and grew up in the suburbs—the row house kind of suburbs—and I got my first guitar when I was like 12 or 13. “It was one in a junk store that my mom gave me ten bucks for,” he says. “We played a lot of two-note chords, which you could get away with in the ‘50s, and the drummer had a kick, a snare, and a cymbal—and that was it. And our bass player had a crummy little amplifier and we played in this little garage. People started coming around to listen to us, and that started becoming fun.”

M’s Pub And then there was that other big interest. “I was also really into science, too,” he continues, “and Sputnik went up when I was in high school, thereabouts. Anybody with a math and science sort of inclination was turned on by this whole thing. It was just very exciting.” Salhany continued to play in bands (with some interesting names like Penetrations and City Dog) as he pursued his education and launched his career, earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and his Ph. D. from the University of Chicago. He also did postdoctoral research at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey before landing in Omaha, joining the University of Nebraska Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor in 1975. He was a full professor in UNMC’s departments of internal medicine and biochemistry and molecular biology by 1989, and also did scientific research with both a magnetic resonance heart laboratory at the Med Center and a blood laboratory at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. “I’m officially retired. They give you the emeritus status,” he says, but their isn’t anything “emeritus” about his music. Salhany regularly works with his vocalist/flutist wife, Christine, on various projects. And he still plays with a couple of local ensembles, adding to the long line of collaborations he’s enjoyed over the years. “It’s been a blast,” he says.  Encounter
