FAMILY OF THE WEEK: Our Family Plays Games, LLC

Decision on Councilman Palermo The federal grand jury’s decision to indict Councilman Palermo does not affect his ability to remain on the City Council. The City of Omaha Charter (Sec. 2.05) only automatically forfeits a council member’s position if he or she is convicted of a felony or any crime involving a violation of the City of Omaha’s oath of office. At this time, Councilman Palermo is charged with violations of federal law, not convicted. However, the same provision of the Charter requires forfeiture of office if City Council meetings are missed. While the length of Councilman Palermo’s incarceration is unknown, he faces removal from office if he is absent from Council meetings for three consecutive calendar months without being excused by the

Council. Also, regardless of whether he is excused or not, he would automatically be removed after missing six consecutive calendar months of meetings. It is the opinion of the Law Department that missing a meeting due to pretrial incarceration on a federal indictment is not an excusable absence. If Councilman Palermo resigns or forfeits his office, the remaining council members will vote on his replacement. That replacement would require a majority vote and a tie vote is a vote to deny the nominee. Nebraska law requires the City of Omaha to have a seven-member Council and therefore, the Council must replace Councilman Palermo if he resigns or forfeits his seat. ★

Did you see Chevalier? If you have not, get to the Dundee Theatre and see it. Did you know… he was a Black man in Paris in the 1700 who rivaled Mozart as a violin virtuoso? He was part of the French Revolution. He was brilliant! I was so impressed, I will no doubt see it again before it leaves our market. Yet again, art imitates life. Many of the issues that he faced, we face today. Being undervalued because of the color of his skin was an issue. The countrymen did not believe that he was capable of the music he played. He was

Conquering the top persons in the field. He was also a boxer. Even though he was the product of a plantation owner father, an African slave woman was his mother, and he was considered a mulatto he was proud of who he was and what he had accomplished. His father saw to it that he was well educated. This production is a reminder of, if you have it in your head and heart, no one can take your essence from you. SNAFU Men’s Bowling League Winners Congratulations to Team SNAFU who won the Wednesday night Men’s Bowling League Championship on Wednesday. April 19, 2023 at Maplewood Lanes bowling center. The team consists of the following members (from left to right), John Smith, Henry Moore, Bruce Dyer (anchor), Mitch Pinkard (captain), Tony Bryant, Tim Scurlock and Brandon Smith (seated). This particular men’s bowling league was comprised of nearly thirty teams; the season began in August of 2022 and ended mid-April of 2023. For this highly competitive league, this African American team stayed the course all season long and made it to the playoff round of eight teams. It was a challenging playoff night, but Team SNAFU hung in there and successfully outscored the other teams they were matched up against.

As the #7 seed, this team was considered underdogs going into the playoffs. Team SNAFU quickly proved why they belonged, advancing from the ‹Elite Eight› to the ‹Final Four›, all the way through winning the league championship for the 2022 - 2023 Bowling League season. This is first time in recent history that an all-African American team has won the League Championship at this bowling center here in Omaha. According to Dyer, «We have bowled faithfully in this league for over six years and this ‹victory› was well worth the wait!” The team’s name ‘SNAFU’ was chosen to honor the Veteran members on the team and to pay tribute to their military families. Bruce also stated, “If you are curious to know what the team name acronym, SNAFU, means, just google it.” Team SNAFU looks forward to defending their crown next bowling season! ★

Mildred Brown, who lived from 1905 to 1989, left an indelible mark on the history of North Omaha and the Midwest region as a whole. She was a force to be reckoned with as a journalist and businesswoman, and was the co-founder and co-operator of the Omaha Star, a newspaper dedicated to the African-American community. Mildred Brown took charge of the business and managed it by herself, turning it into the sole African-American newspaper in Nebraska by 1945. Not only was she a renowned journalist and publisher, but she was also a key figure in the civil rights movement of the 1960s in Omaha. Through the Omaha Star, she raised awareness of civil rights issues and fought against housing discrimination by refusing to sell advertisements to discriminatory businesses. Her influence in the city led to her being appointed as a goodwill ambassador to East Germany by President Lyndon Johnson. Mildred Brown’s exceptional achievements also earned her a place in the Omaha Business Hall of Fame, making her one of only three women to be inducted. Even after her passing, Mildred Brown’s impact continued to be recognized, with her posthumous induction into the Nebraska Journalism Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Omaha Press Club Journalism of Excellence Hall of Fame in 2008. The Omaha Star, which is believed to be one of the few American newspapers founded by a black woman, was also acknowledged for its historical significance when the Omaha Star Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Mildred Brown’s commitment to journalism and civil rights was such that she lived in an apartment located within the Star offices until she passed away. ★

GoGreenwood.com published on October the 8th 2020 that “According to the University of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth, money circulates one time within the African American community, compared to more than six times in the Latino community, nine times in the Asian community and an unlimited amount of times within the white community. A Black Star Project study on the racial wealth gap calculates that a dollar circulates six hours in the Black community, 20 days in the Jewish community and 30 days in the Asian community. Blacks have an estimated $1.3 trillion gross national income but only two percent is recirculated in the Black community.” That being the miserly case, its imperative that we as African Americans support one another’s businesses first and primarily for as much is as possible. After Belafonte was honorably discharged, he went back to New York, where he worked odd jobs until two free tickets to the American Negro Theatre (A.N.T.) changed his life.

He was one of the organizers of the 1963 March on Washington and led a delegation of Hollywood luminaries including his best friend Sidney Poitier, as well as Paul Newman, Sammy Davis, Jr, Marlon Brando, Rita Moreno, Tony Curtis, James Baldwin, Burt Lancaster, Joanne Woodward, Diahann Carrol, Bob Dylan, Mahalia Jackson, Peter, Paul and Mary and Joan Baez, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis and Tony Curtis. He won a Tony in 1954 for his performance in Almanac. At the same time, Belafonte developed his singing talents, having parlayed a series of nightclub performances into a record contract. His third album, Calypso, topped the charts for thirty-one consecutive weeks and was the first record to sell more than 1 million copies. KIDS TALK ABOUT GOD BY CAREY KINSOLVING AND FRIENDS

How Can You Be Sure You Will Live With Jesus Forever? “Jesus is on top of my ship. We are going to go to heaven,” says John, 5.

like what Emiliano, 9, wrote: “Christ “has everlasting life..”

Yes, Jesus is the captain of our salvation. Apart from him, we are ships in a storm headed for the rocks.

Emiliano, have you been reading John 3:16 and John 5:24? Both say that the way to receive eternal life is to believe in Christ. Let’s look at the latter, where Jesus said: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes in him who sent me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life,” (John 5:24).

A famous Spanish captain searched for the Fountain of Youth in Florida. Ponce de Leon never found it, but there is much folklore about where he looked. When I visited an ancient Inca site on Lake Titicaca in Bolivia at an elevation of more than 12,000 feet, the archaeologist traveling with us claimed that Ponce de Leon once traveled to the site in search of the Fountain of Youth. Laugh if you will at the quest of Ponce de Leon, but at least he was looking. Even if you live past 100, like my grandmother at 106, life is ever so short compared to forever. Do you think anyone living 200 years from now will even remember that you existed? If you like conciseness, you’ll probably

First, notice that the one who believes in Christ “has everlasting life.” Eternal life is a present possession. Most think everlasting life is a future state. Not so. It begins at the instant of faith in Christ alone. Please note, it’s not believing in Jesus Christ plus something else. When Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, he said, “It is finished,” (John 19:30). He wasn’t kidding. Second, the one who believes in Jesus “has passed from death into life.” For the first 17

years of my brief journey on planet Earth, I existed as a spiritual zombie. I had physical life, but I was spiritually dead. When I heard for the first time that eternal life was a gift to be received and not a reward to be earned, I believed in Christ and passed from spiritual death into the realm of eternal life. Goodbye forever to zombie land! I said goodbye forever to zombie land (spiritual death) because the life of God that I received is “eternal life.” To say you can lose eternal life is a contradiction. If you can lose something that’s “eternal,” then it’s not eternal. God would never call something eternal if it could be lost. “If you believe, He will always be with you. He will never leave you,” says Bert, 8. You can do many things by making a decision. Undoing a birth is not one of them. You can no more undo your spiritual birth by denying Christ than you can undo your physical birth by denying your parents (John 3:1-18).

Zion Spring Revival Kicks Off Month “United in Witnessing”

Rev. Wayne Banks

Think about this: The idea of losing eternal life questions God’s integrity. God always keeps his promises. Jesus promised eternal life all who believe in him as their savior. Memorize this truth: “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:28). Ask this question: Are you confident that you’ll live with God forever? ★ __________________________________ Kids Talk About God is designed for families to study the Bible together. Pastor Kenneth Allen

Pastor Kenneth Allen and the Zion Baptist Church invite one and all to join us for a Spirit-filled, soul-saving Spring Revival, Monday through Wednesday, May 1-3, 2023, at 7:00 nightly. Delivering the message each evening will be one of God’s most powerful and anointed proclaimers, the Rev. Wayne Banks, Sr., Pastor of the Greater New Home Missionary Baptist Church of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Services will be held on April 26, 2023 at Morning Star Baptist Church, 2019 Burdette St., Omaha, NE. Viewing from 10 - 11 AM with Funeral Service at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Roeder Mortuary, Inc. - Ames Chapel 4932 Ames Ave - Omaha, NE - 402453-5600 www.RoederMortuary.com

The revival theme is, “The Church United in Witnessing” based on Acts 1:8, where Jesus said, Local churches and pastors will help us lift up our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Pastor Brian Page and Pleasant Green Baptist Church, Pastor Jamey L Colts and Morning Star Baptist Church, and Pastor Albert Wagstaff and King Solomon Baptist Church are just a few of the guests who will be worshipping with us. Taking a moment to share my life and appreciation By Billy Holland

For those of you that read this column, I hope the insights and considerations are worth your time. I have political and social speculations like all of you, but I would much rather stay focused on how awesome God is. I’m just a student desiring to understand what I believe, while also trying to listen carefully and be discerning about the convictions of others. Everyone has their own opinions about everything, and when we become involved in endless criticisms and accusations, it accomplishes nothing. In fact, it makes things worse and we have enough of that already. It’s important to me that I know why I believe my views and this can only be accomplished through prayer and study. If we desire to present Christ to a confused world, He pleads with us to surrender our will and learn how to live in the awareness of His presence. Some of you have been asking me to share a few things about my personal life, so first of all, our daughter-in-law had twins last month and Mother and the babies are perfect. Thank you, Jesus! Our four-year-old grandson now has a brother and sister! They are so beautiful. We also have another adorable 10-month-old granddaughter that lives in Denver. I realize I’m preaching to the choir when I say that grandchildren are amazing. Our grandson loves to spend the night at our house

on Friday nights, and it’s always non-stop action of laughter and entertainment. He is so smart and never forgets anything. We pray for these young ones and are concerned about the evil world they will face, but I’m sure people thought the same thing about us. It’s true, the world is declining spiritually, but when we read I John 4:4, we are assured that God’s light always overcomes the darkness. I’ve been a Christian minister and truth seeker for 40 years, and have earned four degrees from two Seminaries. I am currently working on a Ph.D. in Biblical history from a third Seminary. I just want to know more about God. Some of you might know that I’m also a certified fire district chaplain with our county, and a volunteer chaplain for a Veterans healthcare facility where I lead Bible studies and sing the old hymns with my guitar. I enjoy being with people and have realized that just taking the time to listen to others is one of the greatest ways we can show that we care. I was having lunch the other day with a good friend that is battling cancer, and he said that life can change very quickly along with our attitudes and perspectives. When healthy, we are confident in our own strength, but when we are weak, we understand more about humility, faith, and priorities. In the end, hopefully, we will know that life was all about love. The love God gave to us, and how much love we passed on to others. When it comes to my writing, I began back in the early eighties writing, singing, and recording music about faith and personal intimacy with God. This led to sermons,

leading worship, devotions, blogs, funerals, weddings, videos, cd’s, books, and eventually expanded from a church environment to the realm of public media. I’m not sure how many newspapers or news agencies publish “Living on Purpose” each week, but at one time it was estimated that around 200 newspapers were using my work. It’s an honor as a freelance/non-syndicated faith columnist to have the opportunity to reach this many readers. Thank you for all the emails and letters, they are very encouraging. I’m also a content coordinator for Best Version Media where I write feature articles for one of their many monthly magazines, and currently working on my fourth book. You can read more about the books on Amazon and my website. Along with a small group of volunteers, we operate a non-profit charitable organization called, “Walking Thru Ministries” a weekly food distribution program for the needy. Stores and co-ops give us food and we give it out to families, churches, and other outreach ministries. There are many people, especially children in our area that are struggling to make ends meet. I do not have room to share all the activities my wife and I are involved in, but I just wanted to say how much we appreciate your kindness, prayers, support, and friendship. It’s a privilege to serve God and discuss His word with you each week. “Blessed are the ones who find wisdom, and those who gain understanding” Proverbs 3:13. Growing Gardeners as Mandela Prepares for Annual Spring Plant Sale The garden across the street from Nelson Mandela Elementary is hard to miss while driving down Curtis Ave, especially in the summertime when its plants are in full bloom and scholars can be seen getting their hands dirty. Before the plants make it to the garden, there’s a lot of preparation in the corner of the school cafeteria which houses the plant seedlings. 5th grade scholars work with Ms. Riannon Bell, who is both the cafeteria and garden manager, to take care of the plants. They have spent the last several months preparing over 400 plants for their annual spring plant sale. They also learned about seed saving, soil testing, vegetable tasting, flavor profiling, composting, planting, pickling, and making homemade butter.

In a recent interview for the school yearbook, Ms. Bell, the gardening teacher said, “I really have a passion for teaching kids how to grow food; it’s cool to see their faces when they think the seed won’t do anything and they come back later and see it’s a sprout.” ★

The school also received a grant through Whole Foods for a hydroponic garden tower. The scholars grew fresh dill on the tower and made a huge batch of dill pickles for hamburger day. The plant sale is Saturday, April 29, and May 6, from 11-2 while supplies last. They will be selling peppers, tomatoes, herbs, cucumbers, zucchini, seeds, brussel sprouts, cabbage, and collards. All proceeds will go towards the last 5th grade field trip of the year and back into the gardening program.
