The Call AARP Chapter 5253 Reorganization After a core group of veteran AARP Chapter 5253 members met on June 1, 2023, it was decided to resurrect the organization. 5253’s origins began in 1998, meeting at OOIC, eventually landing at Omaha Public Library’s Washington Branch. Because of the World Pandemic and the spread of the airborne SARSCoV-2 (Covid 19), chapter meetings ceased immediately in February 2002. Agenda items affirmed: • Re-establish Chapter 5253 • Local membership - $5 per year • Election of Officers ✓ President – Jennifer Keys ✓ Vice President – Arlivia R. Dunson ✓ Secretary – Sylvia Kirtley ✓ Treasurer – Veronica Galloway ✓ Membership Chairperson • Meeting Location ✓ Charles B. Washington Library 2868 Ames Av • Meeting Time ✓ 2nd Monday of each month ✓ 10:30 a.m.
Make the most out of your AARP. AARP is here to help take on the day by sharing practical information with your future in mind. From the political to the social, AARP Chapter 5253 is a champion for social change helping make life better for today’s 50+ population and generations to follow. We believe by helping people navigate ageless realities like financial well-being, health, how to contribute to society and our local community, and how to fully enjoy life in the face of constantly changing realities. Our next scheduled meeting is Monday, July 10, 2023, 10:30 a.m., at the Charles B. Washington Library, 29th Ames Avenue. The day’s agenda will include greetings and induction of new officers by volunteer state president of AARP Nebraska, Suzan DeCamp. AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization empowering people to choose how they live as they age. ★

You cannot believe everything you see on FACEBOOK or what is on/in social media, but you can believe what you read in the Omaha Star Newspaper... Be one of the people that can say: “We had a time last night”! On another note…The Omaha Star is looking for story ideas, persons to be family of the week, artists, writers, creatives, events, church news, and information for newspaper content. Do you have a business in the community? What about becoming an advertiser in the Business Connection for $200 cost for the year? Where do you do your banking? Is your bank advertising in the Omaha Star? Do business with those that are doing business in the community.
Statistics show that the Black consumer spends trillions…our buying power is unsurpassed by any others. The dollar remains in the Black Community less than 30 minutes before it leaves…That is not economic development, that is economic suicide… The reality is that we have to have somewhere to spend the dollars in order for the money to stay in the community. That means that businesses have to be located in the community. Yes, we need service agencies in our community to meet needs, but we also need buying and selling to go on in District 2 (our legislative district) and the district where Juanita Johnson serves as City Councilperson. Street naming is wonderful and I applaud the events, but if commerce is not going on in the streets by way of businesses that are being established then what do we have??? I’m just saying (IJS)…Think on this! ★
REACH Should You Get Vaccinated If You Had or Currently Have COVID-19? Racial and ethical approaches to community health (REACH) is a periodic column focused on reducing health disparities in the African American community. It includes topics submitted by Creighton University Health Sciences Multicultural and Community Affairs (HS-MACA) department. By Richard L. Brown, Ph.D., FACHE The COVID-19 epidemic has begun to subsided in the US and people have gone back to living life as usual. Many people have contracted the virus and survived, while many others across all age groups have died. The reality is that we are living as best we can, in spite of the virus continuing to live among us. Many questions have been asked and answered during the past three years. One of the more recent questions asked is should people get vaccinated if they had or currently have Covid -19. Based on CDC, the following is what we know. If you recently had COVID-19, you still need to stay up to date with your vaccines, but you may consider delaying your next vaccine dose by 3 months. You must allow 3 months from 1) when your symptoms started or 2) if you had no symptoms, when you first received a positive test. Re-infection is less likely in the weeks to months after infection. However, certain factors could be reasons to get a vaccine sooner rather than later, such as: A. personal risk of severe disease, B. o r risk of spreading the disease to a loved one or close contact, C. l ocal COVID-19 hospital admission level D. a nd the most common, COVID-19 variant currently causing illness. Hospital admission rates are categorized as low, medium, and high. If admission rates in the community is high, the risk of contracting the virus is high and you should consider getting vaccinated and staying up to date. If it is low, you may delay vaccination. Virus constantly changes through mutation and sometimes these mutations result in a new variant of the virus. Some changes and mutations allow the virus to spread more easily or make it resistant to treatments or vaccines. As the virus spreads, it may change and become harder to stop. Yes, you should get vaccinated upon the advice of your personal medical provider. It is your choice. Choose wisely, your life and family depend on it. “Stay Active, Health and Happy” ★

The Big Fat Setup Part 2 When is the last time you ever saw a vegetable at Family Dollar?
at Family Dollar? Yet how many of us have stopped into Family Dollar when we’re hungry to pick up something?
It’s no secret that obesity is on the rise in this country. It’s also no secret that there are higher rates of obesity in the North Omaha community as compared to other parts of the city. Why is that?
Family Dollar is only an example similar. Similar trends exist for fast food outlets, gas station outlets and vending machines. A 2004 study in the Journal of Health Economics showed that when there is a 10% increase in fast food outlets there is an 8% increase in obesity. I do not know the percentage increase in such outlets in North Omaha but use your own memory. Has there been an increase in places we can buy unhealthy food in North Omaha over the last 10 years, 20 years, or 30? If there has, then it is a driver of obesity.
Some people have said that food is cheaper especially food that is unhealthy. Other people said that we exercise less, and we spend more time in front of the television. Or that there are changes in the work environment, so we have less time to prepare meals. Several studies have indicated that while these are factors, they are not the major contributors to obesity. A 2011 article in the Journal Annual Review of Public Health said that the most important driver of obesity is the food industry’s attempt to make high fat, high sugar food more accessible. What does that big sentence mean? It means that people who make our food are spending money to shape our behavior. Think of all the advertising that you have seen promoting food. When was the last time you saw a carrot advertised on TV? Advertising works. It shapes what we buy, shapes what we think. The primary goal of advertising over the last three decades regarding food has been to make us hunger for high fat, high sugar food when we really don’t need it. We associate eating with good or bad times, with boredom, driving, with working or watching. Almost anything can make us think we need something to eat—even if we are not hungry. How does this make people overweight? There is an increase the availability of convenient high fat high fat foods in the community. If you Google Dollar General and place it all on a map, you find that in Omaha there are a total of 16 Dollar General Stores. 14 of them are east of 72nd St. When was the last time you ever saw a vegetable
North Omaha has been termed a food dessert because there is a lack of access to healthy foods. I think it is more accurate today that North Omaha is a Food Swamp. In a swamp there is water everywhere, but you don’t want to drink it. In a food swamp, there is calories everywhere, but you don’t want to eat it. What does this mean for you if you’re overweight? It’s not your fault. Let me repeat that it’s not your fault. Don’t feel ashamed. You’ve been set up. What do you do about it? Well, the advice about diet and exercise, as old as it sounds, is still the best advice. Move some calories from convenience or fast food to healthy fruits and vegetables; drink more water so that there’s less room in your stomach and you feel less hungry; move more so that you feel better. Let’s figure it out together at the Butler-Gast YMCA, 3501 Ames Av, beginning July 13, 2023, 5 PM. It is a 8-week course and it’s free we will discuss common reasons for weight gain and some things you can do about it. The name of the course is Eat Well Live Well. It’s what i used to lose 60 pounds in my life. If you want to register for the class or if you’d like more information, please e-mail us at eatwellomaha@gmail.com. ★
Local Author Book Review Reviewed by Foluso Falaye for Readers’ Favorite
In I Love Our Rhythm so Fu#k the Blues, Todd William Fredrick Hunter, Sr. explores the effect of slavery on Black culture from the arrival of the first slave ship in the 1600s to recent times. Todd looks back at the choices in his relationships, work, and Black communities, reflecting on his mistakes and the areas he needs to work on. The book includes thoughtprovoking discussions about Black women’s opinions of Black men, unity within the Black community, the effect of raunchy and violent lyrics in today’s music, and how religion is used as a manipulative tool, among other topics. Todd, born in the 1960s, has witnessed significant changes in the Black community. He writes this profoundly insightful book to help restore love and positive relations among all Blacks. The chapters in I Love Our Rhythm so Fu#k the Blues contain poetic, lyrical words that allow the reader to better understand the book’s messages and commit them to memory. As
a music lover and musician, I particularly loved the author’s comparison of music lyrics from such historical periods as the James Brown era and today’s gangsta lyrics. I completely agree with the author that Hip-hop music today encourages self-hate and needs to be more positive. Hopefully, the book’s messages will reach every Black man and woman
in the US, as Black relationships, families, unity, and love would be much better for it. Todd tells it like it is—no sugarcoating or avoiding difficult topics. His candid, relatable, and deeply inspiring words are the perfect catalyst for a much-needed Black love revolution. His book spreads one important message: Black love matters! ★

THE OMAHA STAR

Summer Enrichment and Learning at Mandela Mandela’s summer session is off to an exciting start. The school has partnered with several organizations in the community to provide an enriching summer for scholars. They are participating in sports like soccer, golf, and tennis. They are also completing STEM and art projects, garden-

ing, fishing, learning Spanish, skateboarding, doing yoga, and most importantly engaging in play and fun! The scholars also get to adventure across Nebraska this summer with field trips every Friday to museums, parks, and activity centers throughout the community.

Scholars also engage in more standard academic practices during the summer. They meet with their teachers each morning in small groups to review any concepts they missed throughout the school year or missed on their end of the year exams. These targeted interventions allow
teachers to work closely with scholars and make sure they are prepared for their next grade level. This process helps alleviate a lot of necessary review at the beginning of the next school year and summer slide, both of which are key to bridging learning and achievement gaps. ★

At Baxter, putting you first and foremost is priority number one. That’s been the case since we started doing business back in 1957, and that’ll be the case for as long as we’re in business. So if you’re in the market for a new ride—or even if you’re just thinking about thinking about that new ride—let us know how we can help.
