Oman’s strategic geographic position has long made it a trading hub, linking the Middle East to Pakistan and the Indian subcontinent to the east, Iran to the north, and Africa to the south. It is strategically positioned outside of the Arabian Gulf, serving key markets in Asia, East Africa, and the wider Middle East and North Africa region, while also benefiting from the Sultanate’s oil and gas industry’s central position. The Sultanate of Oman has a long history dealing with long-distance maritime and land trades. The importance of Muscat’s port of Muttrah was recognized by the Greek geographer Ptolemy, who saw Muscat’s importance as the last watering place for ships going out of the Gulf to India, East Africa, and beyond. Oman was a crucial center on the Silk Road between the East and the West, with active maritime connections to its Indian Ocean ports and land trade links to neighboring cities. The process of the diversification of the economy, SOLS 2040, and the undertakings of ASYAD have become a breakthrough in the logistics sector. This issue of Oman Business Finder discusses innovative steps introduced by the Sultanate in the logistics sector and the new opportunities and possibilities of the sector in the Sultanate of Oman. We present the fifth issue of Oman business finder to the readers.

The new measures adopted by the Sultanate will revitalize the economy and help small business and the public. The change from an oil-oriented economy to non-oil resources has been viewed as a paradigm shift and is probably to make enduring positive impacts on the economy. The focus on different sectors might redirect the economy into new ways and possibilities. In the future, the logistics sector will be one of the key pillars of the nation’s non-oil-based economy. Oman, with its maximum trade potential, has deep ties with more than 20 countries in major continents. The national program for enhancing economic diversification (Tanfeedh) has concluded that Logistics and Tourism can be the new source of income for the country. It led to the formation of Oman’s logistics’ strategy in 2040. Under the strategy, Oman Global Logistics Company (OGL) or ASYAD was tasked with putting this to action. On the other side, the Oman National Spatial Strategy project (ONSS) highlighted the importance of logistics and regional connectivity in terms of Email: info@nextaone.com
performance, connectivity, efficiency and competitiveness. The key factor which escalates the possibilities of the Sultanate as a logistics hub is the nation’s strategic geographical location. Oman is a country in Southwest Asia that borders the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, and is located between Yemen and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Stressing on its strategic location, the nation is focusing to be a global logistics hub. It will increase the self-sufficiency and economic and political stability of the Sultanate. Logistics, industrial manufacturing and tourism shall be the future economic drivers. The emphasis on non-oil exports has become a key part of the national plan ever since the eighth five-year plan (2011-15). Even the health restrictions have created strain on the entire economy, the development of transhipment facilities, especially at the port of Duqm, is mostly to make a fast and easy recovery of the sector.

SOLS 2040: The Gateway to The Future of the Sultante The crises in the oil industry have prompted GCC nations to diversify the economic sources to non-oil sectors. In response to this, the Sultanate of Oman has adopted some measures to diversify the economy. As a quick response, the Tanfeedh-National program for enhancing economic diversification was formed. Logistics, Industrial production and tourism were introduced as the key economic drivers of the Sultanate in future. It led to the formulation of the Sultanate of Oman Logistics StrategySOLS 2040. The strategy was developed in consultation with 65 specialists from different sectors and was published in February. The Oman Logistics Centre (OLC) was 12

established in early 2015 by the Ministry of Transport and a communication (MoTC), which is currently led by Saeed bin Hamoud bin Saeed al Maawali. Its mission is to oversee the implementation of SOLS 2040 while also simplifying government logistics processes through the four pillars of markets, trade facilitation, human capital, and technology applications. The formation of OLC has increased trust of stakeholders and helped the raise of the profile of the Sultanate’s logic sector domestically and internationally. SOLS 2040 was created to develop an integrated logistics system that includes ports, airports, public buses, road networks, railroads, and sea shipping.
One of the primary goals of the logistics strategy is to promote the development of human capital, which is vital to the logistics industry’s long-term success
It aims to link all of the countries’ logistics hubs to the rest of the Gulf region through efficient road and rail networks. One of the primary goals of the logistics strategy is to promote the development of human capital, which is vital to the logistics industry’s longterm success. According to Oman’s Logistics Strategy, logistics-related activities have the potential to generate approximately OMR 14 billion over the next two decades, contributing approximately 12% to the country’s GDP which would make the sector the country’s second-largest economic contributor after
hydrocarbons. According to the report, Oman is expected to generate 80,000 logistics-related jobs by the end of the decade and 300,000 by 2040. Based on the strategy, Oman Global Logistics Company (OGL) or ASYAD was incorporated to translate this strategy into practice. The strategy established the guideline for ASYAD and called for increasing utilization of available infrastructure. In addition, Oman aviation group was also formed as a government undertaking. The both were re-launched in 2017 as ASYAD.

SOLS recommended that the truck and freight movement should have its own regulating body, education and training of the youth for strategy is of great importance and a research body must be developed to supervise the sector. The existing shortage of skilled labours has brought the development of human capital as the primary concern in order to match the forecasted growth and development in logistics.
Opportunities and possibilities
The nations’ education and technology have been upgraded to a high standard in order to achieve SOLS 2040’s goals and address the logistics sector’s challenges. These changes have created new possibilities and opportunities for the sector. Some of the key factors which are to multiply the positive impacts of SOLS 2040 are the following: 1.Development of Human Capital
To achieve the target of 300,000 jobs by 2040 in the logistics and related

sectors, the universities and colleges have introduced many courses related to logistics. The acquisition of International maritime college Oman (IMCO) by ASYAD has was a breakthrough in the sector. IMCO offers undergraduate courses like Marine Engineering, Logistics and Transport Management and training programmes like maritime courses, logistics and transport courses, CILT courses etc. The institution is supported by the Rotterdam-based STC Group who has over 25 years of experience delivering creative learning opportunities for students interested in the maritime, transportation, and oil and gas industries. The improvement in logistics-related education shall fill the existing gap between needed and available skilled labours. 2.Innovations in Technology
To achieve the target of 300,000 jobs by 2040 in the logistics and related sectors, the universities and colleges have introduced many courses related to logistics. The institution is supported by the Rotterdam-based STC Group who has over 25 years of experience delivering creative learning opportunities for students interested in
the maritime, transportation, and oil and gas industries. The improvement in logistics-related education shall fill the existing gap between needed and available skilled labours. 3.To Increase Public Awareness
To increase the awareness about the opportunities in logistics and to develop on the job training also is of great importance. As the country’s focus on the sector became intensive only in recent times, the public may not be so aware of its sector. The best practices for increasing awareness are: Defining the career path clearly and articulating the available opportunities Promoting the sector and related areas in high schools 4.On-the-Job Training for Workforce Development
On –the-job-training is an important part of human resource management. It aids in the advancement of an individual’s career as well as the organization’s continued success. Onthe-job training is a form of training that takes place in the workplace. Employees are familiarised with the working environment they would be a part of during the preparation. Employees get hands-on experience with machinery, vehicles, supplies, and materials, among other things. Face the problems that arise when doing the job is an essential
part of on-the-job preparation. An experienced employee or manager plays the role of mentor, passing on his or her expertise and company-specific skills to the new employee through written or verbal guidance and demonstrations. It also helps the labours to boost their confidence and sharpen their skills.
The introduction of special economic zones and the softening of the economic barriers have brought this strategy into the ground on a major level Conclusion
In short, the SOLS plays an undeniable role in transforming the Sultanate of Oman as the global logistics hub and hence, bringing self-sufficiency to the nation. The introduction of special economic zones and the softening of the economic barriers have brought this strategy into the ground on a major level. Logistics hubs are natural strategic infrastructures that can help Oman extend its trade relations outside the oilbased economy while also safeguarding the country’s interests. Infrastructure investments in ports, free zones, industrial parks, highways, airports, and rail networks, as well as economic diversification initiatives and trade with GCC nations, Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa, are the main drivers of economic development. The Gulf countries’ overdependence on oil exports, which accounts for more than 80% of GDP in some countries, was adversely affected by the global economic downturn brought on by low oil prices. The situation compelled major countries to take serious steps to consolidate and stabilize the economic sources in future. The Sultanate of Oman has been planning the shift to non-oil sources
from the beginning of the last decade. The strategic geographical location of Oman itself was a key imperative for such a change. Throughout history, Oman has benefitted from this position making trade contacts with Persia, India and Africa. It was a vital centre in Silk Road between the East and the West and had an active marine connection with its ports on the Indian Ocean and land trade links with
neighbouring centres. These historical facts were enough to show the possibilities Oman had in logistics. The logistics sector has become an integral part of the economy even from 2013 with earning revenue of US$7.87 bn in 2013. In 2016, a national committee with the name of Tanfeedh was formed for the diversification of the economy. Tanfeedh emphasized the
importance of expanding the tourism and logistics sector which can be the new source of income for the country. As a result, the ministry of Transportation was authorized to develop the Sultanate of Oman logistics strategy 2040 (SOLS 2040). Oman Global Logistics Company (OGL) or ASYAD was assigned to translate this strategy into practice. OGL was given in charge of
logistics hubs (roads, dry ports, warehouses) and logistics operators (Oman Rail, National Ferries Company, Oman Shipping Company). ASYAD was instructed to increase the utilization of available infrastructure and maximize their contributions, to employ Omanis and to build a logistics name for the country.

Mazoon Dairy Co: The Unique Story of 100 Days in Logistics Abdulaziz Al-Zadjali Senior Logistic Manager, Mazoon Dairy
With the mission of delivering fresh and nutritious products to every home in Oman, Mazoon Dairy Co. has been creating success sagas in the dairy supply and transport in the Sultanate of Oman. Mazoon Dairy Co has been selected by Oman food investment holding CO, a state-owned enterprise, to carry out Oman’s flagship dairy project. The brand itself has a vigorous and vibrant outlook, which also encompasses both the old and the modern. Mazoon’s long-term objectives are to establish the Sultanate as a self-sufficient dairy producer and a hub for food manufacturing.
Mazoon Dairy Company was incorporated on January 1st 2015 to improve self-sufficiency in dairy production and focus on the nutritional well-being of children in the Sultanate of Oman. The company was established as a closed joint-stock company with a total capital of 100 million OMR. The location in As’Sunainah in the Al Buraimi governorate, which is spread over an area of 15 sq km, was selected because of the abundance of water, fertile soil, and a pleasant environment to support the cattle and due to its proximity to both local and GCC markets. The area is equipped with a dairy farm that can house more than 25,000 cows and a processing plant capable of producing 1 million litres of liquid milk per day. Mazoon plans to increase its annual production to 900 million litres by 2040. The company’s farm in Al Sunainah is one of the most advanced in the country, with temperaturecontrolled facilities and a high-capacity machine capable of milking 1000 cows per hour. The Central processing plan spans 50,000 sq mtr. Starting with raw milk reception and ending with commodity despatch to the market, the plant is 85 per cent automated and has the highest quality control systems in operation. Mazoon Dairy, unlike other dairy farms around the world, is a completely integrated facility that encompasses a milking parlour, veterinary services, manufacturing and packaging factory, and a waste treatment facility, as well as sales and logistics facilities. Mazoon Dairy was known for its advanced dairy technologies and production lines, as well as green solutions such as a distinctive biogas production plant that converts farm waste into gas that is used as an alternative energy source to power some
of the factory’s machinery. There is also a separate sewage treatment facility that recycles the water which will be pumped into the farm’s irrigation system. In October 2016, the Mazoon Dairy Company established a strategic alliance with Sultan Qaboos University to use its facilities for dairy product research and development, recipes, and packaging. The major products of Mazoon Dairy co. include fresh milk, pasteurised milk, flavoured milk, yoghurts, juices, cheese, and ice cream. The intensive efforts of Mazoon will help the Sultanate to decrease the imports of dairy products which is currently 70%. Mazoon aims to reduce it to 10%. From Musandam to Dhufar in 100 days
The wonder that played in the success of Mazoon is the well-planned supply and transportation system. The company started with only 18 staffs and limited supply. Now it has spread all over the sultanate of Oman and major markets of GCC with the crew support of more than 800 employees. The earlier distribution of Mazoon products focused on Muscat when it started on January 1, 2018. The key turn in the history of the company took place during October-December 2019. Within the end of 2019, Mazoon products have reached all stores, markets and hypermarkets in the Sultanate of Oman establishing itself as one of the popular brands of the country.
The success is greatly linked to the proper implementation of logistics strategies. The logistics division is handled by Abdul Aziz Al Zadijali- the senior logistics manager of Mazoon- utilizing the most sophisticated logistics strategies. An in-vehicle monitoring system (IVMS) is used to monitor entire fleets in the supply chain assuring efficiency and accuracy. The fleets in the operation include 156 refrigerated trucks and 25 long contract trucks which together make a total unit of 181 trucks. The team covers approximately 17428 Kms daily to reach up to numerous customers scattered across the nation from Musandam to Dhofar. To simplify the distance between long locations, the entire supply chain is sub-divided into 7 distribution centres and 135 distribution lines. The distribution centres include the central processing plant in Sunainah and centres in Muscat, Sahem, Al Masnaah, Al Kamil, Nizwa and Salalah. Besides, the adoption of the latest technology in breeding, milking and processing has enhanced both the quality and quantity of products. The quality of the products and the nutritional well-being of the citizens are the primary concerns of Mazoon. The company received 2625 Holstein cows in 2020 which are known as the world’s highest-production dairy animal and it brought the total quantity of the breed on the farm to 7000. Nowadays, Mazoon Dairy Co. has become the promising brand in Oman. The professional management team and comApril 2021
