Oman has become the hub of growing small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) since the last decade. The diversification of the economy of the Sultanate also needs the enhancement of entrepreneurship for faster output. There is a family, who by its entire means leaves no stone unturned to inspire and stimulate young entrepreneurs to stabilize their position in the Omani market. It’s the Al Khonji family who has become one of the successful and influential business families in the Sultanate of Oman. The tradition of the Al Khonji group is greatly related to the growth of the business and entrepreneurship atmosphere in the Sultanate of Oman. Being one of the most successful business and political families in the Sultanate, the Al-Khonji family has a deep root in the community development of Omani society. Keeping Omanization in mind, the family group has tied allies with various national and international members to improve the quality lifestyle of Omani citizens. Foundation of Al Khonji Group The Al Khonji group was founded by two brothers Muhamed and Ahmed Al Khonji in 1920 as a trading company specialized in dhow materials and shipping. The company began with a shop and a yard in Muttrah Souk, where they kept everything relating to dhow shipping, import, and export. The relentless efforts to establish themselves as one of the prestigious companies in the Sultanate of Oman helped them diversify their areas of focus to various sectors. Oman has a long maritime trade
history. The strategic geographical location of the Sultanate enabled it to serve as a vital point in between Gulf nations, Asia, and Africa. Exploiting its business possibilities, the brothers focused on, initially, on import and export using the legendary dhow ‘Fateh Al Khair’. Diverse materials were imported from India, Pakistan, Iraq and Bahrain. In return, vegetables, dry dates, and cooking ghee were exported to Gulf countries, India and beyond. The elder brother Muhammed al Khonji played the role of official mediator between shippers, dhow owners and suppliers. As Keeping Omanization in mind, the family group has tied allies with various national and international members to improve the quality lifestyle of Omani citizens.
a result of his persistent activities, Bait Al Khonji served as the interim leisure centre for captains and traders on a stopover in Muttrah. The house is still used as a discussing centre regarding the social and developmental concerns in the Sultanate of Oman. As the brothers adhered to the integrity, professionalism and social commitment since their emergence in the business sector, they could consolidate their preeminent position in trading, contracting and service. For them, business wasn’t only a way to accumulate money, but also to serve the community ensuring them better infrastructure and quality lifestyle.

The surge of modernity and the expansion of services Al Khonji brothers had adopted a sustainable business strategy upholding the socio-economic growth of the Sultanate of Oman at their forefront. By the second half of the twentieth century, the Sultanate began to alter its course to a more developed and modernized direction. The discovery of oil in 1964 and the beginning of export in 1967 were largely associated with changing infrastructure and financial structure of the Sultanate. Going on par with this, the group diversified its area of focus to multiple sectors which have already started in the early 1950s. In 1950, the import and export were diversified to different products. In addition to dhow materials, radios, batteries and boats were imported and foodstuffs such as dry dates were exported to various locations. In 1954, Mohammad and Ahmed AlKhonji became the first to receive permission to establish an electricity company in Muttrah. And by 1960, they opened one of Oman’s largest showrooms in Muttrah, selling everything from building materials to water and electricity pumps, spare parts and lubricants. The discovery of Oil intensified the modernization process in Oman. With its surge, the group widened its areas understanding the needs of the time. The company had already introduced cars, water pumps and electricity into the community. In addition, by 1971, Al Khonji group became one of the first companies to dominate in the real estate sector. After Sultan Qaboos bin Said acceded to the throne on 23 July 1970, the Al-Khonji group strived to bring into the ground his vision of modern Oman. Which, in turn, led to the transformation of the group. Modernization of Oman and the Contributions of the Group By the 1970s and 1980s, the second and third generations of the family began to take the reins of the business. By this time, many young visionary entrepreneurs of the Al Khonji family had joined the family business and paved the way to intensify the diversification of the business sectors and contributing to the growth of the community.
