SHOPPING ON A BIKE Client: Atlanta Beltline project under the Cross cultural exchange program (Ainshams - Clemson) . Project type: Commercial Area: 15,000 m2 Location: Atlanta, GA, United States Project Year: 2011 illustrations: Omar Abozekry
The idea tries to achieve the walking urban shopping districts, where you can walk everywhere, get fresh food from the local market, ride bikes and transit instead of closed air-conditioned Malls which is falsely though to be the highest standard for shopping, trying to change the way people think about how they want to live in the future.

The building is designed so that the users move up and down in the building while shopping. The building is divided into parts forming a closed loop of shops connected by a continous corridor, This main shopping corridor in the middle of the building elevates as those parts of the building elevate. each building part you walk through, elevates you 1 meter. Bikers can move up and down in the building fast, they don’t need to loop the whole building to circulate vertically, they can reach the narrow loop at the main entrance of the building using it to go up and down fast and easy. They can also use a bike elevator which is located at the main entrance.

OPERA SQUARE conceptual university project
Client: University project Project type: Cultural Goal: Redesigning the linking place between Old islamic cairo city and the Colonial part of cairo. Area: 35,000 m2 Location: Cairo, Egypt Project Year: 2011 illustrations: Omar Abozekry
We were asked to redesign the linking area between the Islamic old city of Cairo and the colonial part built in the 19th century, The area has already encountered lots of urban changes all over the years, more than 100 years ago a magnificent opera house was built in what is called today “opera square. This opera house was burnt as a result of a massive fire in the 70s, replaced by an ugly garage building to overcome the increasing traffic in this busy part of the Egyptian capital. Now the city has decided to convert the area again to a cultural area, regarding its importance as a linkage area between two different urban tissues in Cairo.

The building is designed to provide the users a special experience, As they start their visit from the “Opera square” when the sloped passage takes them to the underground theater entrance, bookshops and other cultural products as a contemporary vision for the renowned “soor el azbakeya”. The road takes you up again to Attaba square, where you find the museums combined together: 1-Egyptian Post museum already existing in the square. 2-Contemporary arts museum An open theater is designed as an addition to the “National theater” already existing. Also an underground theater accessed by two buildings at the Opera square, and the Post museum plaza. The master plan sought the removal of the “azhar bridge” which is blocking the sun from reaching azhar street making it a dummy place, same happening with attaba square. Replacing the bridge with an entrance and exit for the “azhar tunnel” at the required places. It’s also planned to add the renowned “TIRING building” to the attaba square scene, by converting the buildings separating it from the square into a low-height contemporary arts museum.

Faรงade design
Client: Tabarak holdings. Project type: Faรงades and landscape design for a residential compound in new Cairo. Location: Cairo, Egypt Project Year: 2010 Design team: Omar Abozekry, Ahmed Eid, Shady A.Azeem, Ahmed Minyawy.
|RESIDENTIAL
|CAIRO, EGYPT
The project is in a desert climate east of Cairo, The buildings are projected to huge amount of sun light and heat.
We added these walls as screens to protect the building from direct sunlight
These screens have been bent to decrease the heat gain at different times of the day.
The space between the building and the screen allows cross ventilation to cool down the elevation of the building.
|RESIDENTIAL COMPOUND
We have been asked to design the Faรงades and the landscape for a pre-designed layout of residential blocks, This part of the city has a desert climate which is so hot in summer. Requiring design techniques to overcome the enormous heat gain.

PARA-MOIRÉ Parametric moiré for performative facade
Workshop tutor: Encode studio Goal: Parametric design (designing a shading device based on the light analysis for a room at Encode studio) Programs used: Rhinoceros, Ecotect Analysis, Grasshopper plugin (rhino) Location: Alexandria, Egypt time: july 2011 Team members: Omar Abozekry Akl, Basem Samir, Omar Wanas, Shady A.Azeem The workshop started with a theoretical and functional understanding of graphical algorithm editor and then got into more complex definitions, these definitions was integrated with a performance evaluation (Shadow range-Solar Radiation-Daylight PerformanceVisual Access…). Then concentrated on how to integrate a criterion of design guided by evaluating performances of generating geometrics of architectural forms; we constructed a relation between building performance and building geometry with a relying on some software to achieve the previous objectives:-
|PARA-MOIRÉ

|PARAMETRIC DESIGN
18 |
1- Grasshopper as a parametric modeling plug-in for Rhino, is a graphical algorithm editor tightly integrated with Rhino’s 3-D modeling tools, allows the user to construct their own “explicit history tree”. . With little programming experience, users of Grasshopper can define Series steps with a parametric relation. 2-Ecotect for architects is highly visual software to work with environmental performance issues. 3-Geco is an interface which offers a direct link between Rhino/Grasshopper with an automation feature of transforming performances data which consequently enables to combine a generative and performative modeling into one criterion. Finally, a wooden perforated sheet was designed by the participants in groups; this installation was fabricated and fixed in Encode Studio. The best design was fabricated and fixed there. So we learned how to prepare the designs to be fabricated by using laser cutter and how the fabrication process should affect the design process.

BUILDING DESIGN
“This design workshop focused on how existing building perfromance simulation tools can contribute to Zero Energy Building design in Egypt, with special focus on the passive and active solar design. The workshop provided us basic knoweldge and concepts for supporting the decsion making and integration of the different tools into the design process of Zero Energy Building Designs, We presented a final design concept for proposed designs that reflected our gained knowledge and experience.
In this workshop we: 1-Identified the technical requirements for zero-energy building design. 2-Utilized simulation and decision making tools, to validate passive and active design strategies into a project. 3-Designed a case Zero-energy apartment block complying with the Egyptian energy standards.

|SOLID URBAN WASTE
SOLID URBAN WASTE Workshop tutor: Basurama collective Goal: Redefine the residual surrounding areas of the urban landscape Location: Cairo, Egypt time: May2011 Team members: Omar Abozekry Akl, Mohamed Abolkheir, Ibrahim Saad, Rehab Sobhi. I took part in this three days workshop with students and professionals in the fields of art, architecture, design, urban planning, photography. We tried to redefine the residual surrounding areas of the urban landscape, so that they can be used to generate new and innovative ideas. We searched for different uses of urban places that are part of their everyday life. Particular attention was paid to those terrain vague and non-places that the so-called development produces. The workshop was directed by visiting Spanish collective Basurama. A collective dedicated to both cultural investigation and production, focuses its research on productive processes with their consequent generation of waste residues and looks to creative possibilities to address this contemporary problem. We were not centered in the aesthetic aspects of the city but rather in conceptual and innovative solutions.

GLOBAL HOME PLATTE Bauhaus summer school 2010
Workshop Organizer: Bauhaus Dessau institute. Workshop Tutor: Adam Page (UK) Goal: 30 minutes video production criticizing the effects of the “IBA” Urban Redevelopment program on a Plattenbau estate in Dessau-Süd . Location: Dessau, Germany time: july 2010 Producers: Omar Abozekry Akl, Robert Grabczan, Danny Holland, G. M. Gómez Iglesias, Nicole Keußel, Paul-Hervé Lavessière, Brygida Michon, Adam Page, Shruti Subramanian, Deniz Yílmaz and Silvia Zheleva.
The short film Global Home Platte looks at the effects of the “IBA” Urban Redevelopment program on a Plattenbau estate in DessauSüd. It reflects on conversations with local residents about the themes of demolition, shrinkage, commuting and the role of the Dessaubased Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) in the town’s north-south prosperity gap. It combines local people’s ideas with artists’ and architects’ visions.
|BAUHAUS
Platte stands for "Plattenbau" referring to the prefabricated social housing buildings whose use was widespread during the GDR reign for years. They over-exist in eastern cities (Dessau in this case) due to the massive exodus of the inhabitants to western German cities.
In the video project we were very critical about was the misuse of the land. As a few hundred meters away where there’s most of the demolition towards east, there’s a UNESCO biosphere reserve, a magnificent river. Why making a complicated project of social participation with rules limiting ownership when everything is just in hand?
|DESSAU, GERMANY
|GLOBAL HOME PLATTE
IBA 2010 DESSAU : A governmental project in Dessau was particularly demolishing a huge number of the plattenbau buildings which was empty during the past few years. To replace these demolished buildings (prejudged as useless), They searched for different social participation concepts, with parts of the landscapes claimed to the people consisting largely of families of unemployed workers.
