SEIL DESIGN HOTEL Client: HCH SUPPLY CO. INC. Goal: ECO-DESIGN HOTEL BUILT ON THE ROCK FACE . Project type: HOTEL Area: — Location: MARSA ALAM, RED SEA, EGYPT Project Year: 2013 Design: TASMIMAT by Jenan Azmi illustrations: Omar Abozekry

Seil was inspired by the drainage pattern created by the floods that flow through its lands (Seil stands for flash floods in Arabic). These floods have left an imprint of empty streams, Tributaries and rivers that shape the contour of the land and create natural pathways for human flow.

The approach of the project was to take as much inspiration as possible from the surrounding nature while being true and realistic to the fact that Seil is a building as it will never become the hill that surrounds it.

The articulation of the elevations was inspired by the nearby rock formations and the fact that even though their predominant feel is horizontal, many small vertical lines aid in emphasizing the overall horizontality

OPERA SQUARE conceptual university project

Client: University project Project type: Cultural Goal: Redesigning the historical Opera square in the heart of colonial Cairo. Area: 35,000 m2 Location: Cairo, Egypt Project Year: 2011 Design: Omar Abozekry illustrations: Omar Abozekry

The building is designed to provide the users a special experience, As they start their visit from the “Opera square” when the sloped passage takes them to the underground theater entrance, bookshops and other cultural products as a contemporary vision for the renowned “soor el azbakeya”. The road takes you up again to Attaba square, where you find the museums combined together:

|CAIRO, EGYPT

|OPERA SQUARE

We were asked to redesign the linking area between the Islamic old city of Cairo and the colonial part built in the 19th century, more than 100 years ago a magnificent opera house was built in what is called today “opera square”. This opera house was burnt as a result of a massive fire in the 70s, replaced by an ugly garage building to overcome the increasing traffic in this busy part of the Egyptian capital. Now the city has decided to convert the area again to a cultural area.

An open theater is designed as an addition to the “National theater” already existing. Also an underground theater accessed by two buildings at the Opera square, and the Post museum plaza.

GLOBAL HOME PLATTE Bauhaus summer school 2010

Workshop Organizer: Bauhaus Dessau institute. Workshop Tutor: Adam Page (UK) Goal: 30 minutes video production analysing the effects of the “IBA” Urban Redevelopment program on a Plattenbau estate in Dessau-Süd . Location: Dessau, Germany Date: July 2010 Video Producers: Omar Abozekry Akl, Robert Grabczan, Danny Holland, G. M. Gómez Iglesias, Nicole Keußel, Paul-Hervé Lavessière, Brygida Michon, Adam Page, Shruti Subramanian, Deniz Yílmaz and Silvia Zheleva.

www.youtube.com/globalhomeplatte

The short film Global Home Platte looks at the effects of the “IBA” Urban Redevelopment program on a Plattenbau estate in DessauSüd. It reflects on conversations with local residents about the themes of demolition, shrinkage, commuting and the role of the Dessaubased Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) in the town’s north-south prosperity gap. It combines local people’s ideas with artists’ and architects’ visions.

|DESSAU, GERMANY

Platte stands for "Plattenbau" referring to the prefabricated social housing buildings whose use was widespread during the GDR reign for years. They over-exist in eastern cities (Dessau in this case) due to the massive exodus of the inhabitants to western German cities.

|GLOBAL HOME PLATTE

IBA 2010 DESSAU : A governmental project in Dessau was particularly demolishing a huge number of the plattenbau buildings which was empty during the past few years. To replace these demolished buildings (prejudged as useless), They searched for different social participation concepts, with parts of the landscapes claimed to the people consisting largely of families of unemployed workers.

Pictures before and after demolishing a plattenbau building

In the video project we were critical about was the misuse of the land. As a few hundred meters away where there’s most of the demolition towards east, there’s a UNESCO biosphere reserve, a magnificent river. Why making a complicated project of social participation with rules limiting ownership when everything is just in hand?
