Passenger transport, rescue, surveillance missions – a closer look at this new Airbus machine. Unveiled in March at the Heli-Expo in Orlando, Florida, the Dauphin’s successor was developed in the strictest secrecy as a challenger to British-Italian rival AgustaWestland, who scooped up the medium helicopter segment with its AW139. “Our machine is an AW139 killer,” remarked Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus Helicopters. To ensure it has what it takes for the varied tasks entrusted to this class of rotary-wing aircraft, Airbus gave the chopper a futuristic design and Blue Edge blades with double-swept tips that make 50% less noise than the Dauphin, but also a composite fuselage and a newgeneration turboshaft engine.

The expertise, passion and high technology that have distinguished the brand throughout its history provide the basis for its DNA today. But an important part of its magic is also that it gives us an opportunity to dream. An air of fantasy, evocative of Méliès and Jules Verne, floats over this success story and the boundless inventiveness that has contributed to it. We stand in wonderment before Moonstruck, a watch produced in 2009, whose face displays the cosmic interplay of sun, earth and moon and even shows the hours of the tides. In the wake of these designs, which are quite simply brilliant, Nardin continues to pursue a highly skilful and unusual course, making the hours pass by like a sophisticated and

first exploit, which was also a small technological miracle, was to design an ultra-efficient pocket chronometer. Its mechanism contained a high-precision astronomical regulator invented by Jacques-Frédéric Houriet. This success led to Ulysse Nardin being awarded the Prize Medal, the highest distinction in the «complicated watches and chronometers» category, at the International Exhibition in London in 1862. A proudly-held tradition of innovation After that, the company was to win over 4,300 prizes, proof of the innovative spirit that has always been paramount. After Ulysse Nardin, Paul-David, his son, then Ernest, his grandson, took over the running of the company. But after the Second World War the manufactory, which specialised in high-precision self-winding watches as well as ultra-flat designs, faced the so-called Quartz Crisis that hit the mechanical watchmaking industry in the 1970s. THE SPIRIT OF THE TIMES In 1983 the winds of change blew over Ulysse Nardin. The company was bought by a group of investors led by Rolf W. Schnyder. Sent by providence, he was to bring the watchmaking manufactory back to its former glory. «Everything must be redesigned and recreated,» he advised at the time. To do this, he surrounded himself with a true dream team. Firstly, Ludwig Oechslin, a genius of watch design. He was to create many masterpieces for

Ulysse Nardin. Amongst them was the mythical Trilogy of Time, with its three watch designs bearing the names of famous scientists as a tribute to scientific brilliance: the Astrolabium Galileo Galilei (1985), the Planetarium Copernicus (1988) and the Tellurium Johannes Kepler (1992). Another architect of Ulysse Nardin’s rebirth was Pierre Gygax, the engineer who transformed Ludwig Oechslin’s marvels into an industrial reality. From the early 2000s, this visionary pioneer introduced revolutionary materials such as silicon into the manufactory’s production processes. Later on, Patrick P. Hoffman joined this talented team to take charge of international marketing. On Rolf W. Schnyder’s unexpected death in 2011, he was appointed CEO of the manufactory.

they don’t dare try it because there’s often not enough popular support.” ELECTRIC DREAMS Fleets of allelectric aircraft for short- or mediumhaul flights are not yet a reality; nevertheless, electricity inside the planes is. You might recall that, back in the Eighties, the A320 became the first airliner equipped with electric flight controls. Later, the A380 – which took to the skies in 2007 – was equipped with more than 500 kilometers of electric cables. Boeing demonstrated its commitment by putting electric brakes on its 787 Dreamliner. In France, the global leader in what could be termed “electric aircraft” is 39

Fuel consumption is optimized by virtue of the electric motors that essentially turn into wind turbines during the descent phase. Still, it’s unlikely that we would see such an aircraft in French skies until the 2050s. But the Airbus Group will ease the wait with other inventions to be rolled out, starting in 2017: in eighteen months, the Group is expected to begin marketing the E-Fan, the 100%-electric, two-seater plane designed for flight schools and flying 40

clubs, construction of which officially began in Merignac on April 25. The project’s director, Emmanuel Joubert, summed up the challenge this way: “The idea is to move from a researcher’s dream to an industrial project.” In fact, the technology used in the E-Fan will serve as the EADS teams’ foundation when developing the airplane of the future, the E-Airbus; a 100-seat regional aircraft with standard hybrid propulsion, scheduled for 2030. From 2010 onwards, Ferrari’s design management was entrusted to architect and car designer Flavio Manzoni, who had already signed numerous models with Lancia, Maserati, Seat, Volkswagen and Audi. In conjunction with Pininfarina, this visionary imagined the F12 Berlinetta, awarded the Compasso d’Oro (Golden Compass) prize in 2014 – one of the oldest and most prestigious international design awards. WHEN FERRARI TAKES OFF In several ways, this new model marks a turning point for Ferrari: the builder did not work with Pininfarina for the body and Flavio Manzoni’s team took care of the design. Elected Supercar of the Year in 2014 in front of the McLaren P1 and Lamborghini Huracan, the LaFerrari is, in the builder’s words «a reference for the entire car industry; it relays the most refined expression of our unique engineering and unrivalled design expertise, acquired thanks to Formula 1 racing.» According to the latest projects unveiled by Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari could well be taking to the air soon: a passionate lover of science fiction, the Design Manager has imagined a spaceship with a front aileron reminiscent of the LaFerrari radiator grill, while the tail evokes the FXX K. How do you become a collector? François Pinault, owner of Christie’s auction house and the Château Latour vineyards in the Medoc region, still remembers his first artistic shock. “I bought a work by Sérusier, showing a farmyard. The main character in the piece reminded me of my grandmother.” But his acquisition of a masterpiece by Mondrian in 1991 really opened his eyes. “I felt like I’d really accomplished something, before realising I was just beginning a new adventure.” Bernard Arnault, owner of the LVMH group, seems to have a more discrete approach to the question, but still admits that his taste for paintings and art in general comes from his mother, who took him to museums. Edouard Carmignac, founder and president of Carmignac Gestion, is all for a visual artistic education. “First see what suits you based on your tastes, a trend, an era, a style, or anything else! Go to the biggest exhibitions, fairs, shows and other events. And don’t forget to visit art galleries!” Bruno Ledoux has a passion for history and Napoleon. The film producer and majority shareholder of the newspapers Libération and the Nouvel Economist says “I started by buying a fragment of the poem Clisson et Eugénie written by a young Napoleon. That was in 1999. I then acquired the manuscripts that announced the victories of the Battle of Eylau and the Battle of Friedland. I tirelessly kept searching for the rarest works.” A whole lot of intuition and thought Creating a collection means making it stand out from the crowd. François Pinault has a realistic view: “Contemporary collections have always inspired confusion and even rejection. Public tastes generally gravitate towards reassuring trends, whereas modernity involves a succession of ruptures. has a clear preference for the historical values of contemporary art. “Building a collection requires a whole lot of intuition and thought”, he says. “You should take your time, although impulse buys can also be effective.” Edouard Carmignac’s collection is largely based around pop art and the German expressionist movement. His office on the Place Vendôme is adorned with two portraits of Lenin and Mao facing each other, both painted by Warhol. On the opposite wall there is an abstract work by Gerhard Richter. “I chose two portraits of fearsome historical figures”, he says. “But through Warhol’s take on them, and his gift for the total destruction of the two models, I can see a genius at work. On the other hand, I enjoy the Richter for its escapism. There’s an undefined horizon.” Bruno Ledoux is also proud when he shows off his enormous collection of works from 61

the French Revolution and the Imperial era hidden away in his three-storey private mansion in Paris. PATRONAGE AND FOUNDATIONS Ledoux’s collection is set to be transferred to the Palais du Roi de Rome in Rambouillet in 2016. “This unique space will give my collection its true meaning”, he says. “It will really add substance to history, while presenting a new perspective of this little-known era.” Edouard Carmignac’s involvement in patronage goes back a long time. His foundation has been home to more than 200 works since 2000. Half of these will be moved in 2016 to an old Provencal farmhouse on Porquerolles Island which has been transformed into a museum. François Pinault and Bernard Arnault are a little ahead of them in this field. Pinault bought the Palazzo Grassi in Venice in 2005 to showcase young artists and part of his personal collection. He then moved his biggest pieces into the Punta della Dogana art museum three years later. Arnault unveiled the Fondation Vuitton in October 2014, a formidable architectural gem created by Frank Gehry. The space hosts both young artists’ work and part of his personal collection. Needless to say, this artistic quartet has a talent for generously sharing their passion with the public.

What do you think about boarding on a private island of light, space and tranquility, on the world’s most stable hull? That is what WHY – Wally Hermes Yach – offers. This project, a mix between a mega-yacht and a villa, displays surprisingly unique specifications: 58 meter-long, 38 meter-wide, providing 16 passengers and 24 crew members with 4000 square meter of floor space, a 130 meter-long deck, and a 25 meter-long thermo-regulated swimming pool. This 2400ton unit, designed to establish new standards on low energy and low carbon footprint, can cruise 12000 miles (over 22000 kilometers) without refueling! A NICHE MARKET With over five thousand 60 meter-long yachts currently cruising, the superyacht market is facing a high degree of requirements, always pushing further the boundaries of what can be done. Therefore, the traditional architecture of vessels has been questioned in favor of new shapes, as the Glass project reflects: its catamaran hull includes three 5600 square meter glass blocks. Lujac Desautel, its designer, has been influenced by the infinite modularity of Lego blocks when he designed his “Sea Diamond”, which has been built in order to include photovoltaic panels capable of producing enough solar energy to run not only the entire electrical system of the yacht, but also electrical and hybrid-diesel engines without generators. This would then be the most silent yacht in the world. 68

The Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko is expecting the delivery of his new yacht, called “Sailing Yacht A” in July 2016.
