Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. Acts 3:19
JESUS CHRIST THE FOUNDATION “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11
I
n the letter to the Hebrews the writer highlights what all the apostles considered the foundational teachings of the Christian FAITH. These foundations were demonstrated and taught by Jesus Christ himself and now by his Holy Spirit through the apostolic scriptures to revealed us. These are the foundation or Rock of our faith - Jesus Christ. However, during the last 2,000 years this foundation has often been eroded or perverted by ‘religious men’ and ‘humanist systems’. These false teachers introduced other gospels which drifted away from the foundation of Christ’s teaching alone. The true apostolic teaching is sometimes referred to as, ‘the full gospel’, as it includes all the teaching and beliefs that the early disciples stood for. You may well know some, if not all of these, but you may not - it’s important to check you’re truly founded on the truth! This message is
designed to make sure you are on the solid foundation of Christ Jesus and not on traditions of men. The Scriptures in the Bible reveal that Jesus is both the architect and builder being God the Son incarnate and so there can be no other foundation of the faith we profess. Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvellous in our eyes’? (Matt 21:42)
A Sixfold Foundation (Tav) (from Hebrews 6:1-2) The six elementary teachings of Jesus Christ are these: 1. Repentance from Dead Works, 2. Faith towards God, 3. Teaching of Baptisms, 4. Laying on of Hands, 5. Resurrection of the Dead 6. Eternal Judgment. We will consider these essential teachings in brief:
1. Repentance from dead works
Notice that the writer does not just say ‘repent’ in general, although this is still an essential thing to do, but he says specifically from ‘dead works’. What does ‘dead works’ mean? It’s vital to know what ‘dead works’ are, so that you might ‘change your mind and actions’ (repent) from them and do God’s will instead. According to the Scriptures true repentance always precedes true faith which is obedience. Without such repentance belief alone is a mere empty profession. Dead works includes all acts and activities of religion - even of so called ‘Christianity’ that are used to justify acceptance with God. These include the pagan ‘traditions of men’, church attendance and the works of the Mosaic Law. As Isaiah cried out to God: ... And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags...
