BRITANNIA RULES THE WAVES Lesley Robinson British Marine CEO looks at the growth of the marine sector in the UK with its strong revenues and exports rising year on year

S

uperyacht UK is Great Britain’s superyacht industry advocate. Its mission is simple - to represent the interests of the UK’s thriving superyacht sector both at home and internationally. As a sub-group of British Marine, the nation’s leading trade association, Superyacht UK’s membership covers the diversity of the sector from leading naval architects to award-winning manufacturers of yachts and equipment and the full span of supporting services. All its 260-plus members draw on Great Britain’s rich heritage as seafaring pioneers and spearhead truly world-class products and services. As part of British Marine, the nation’s leading trade body, Superyacht UK champions British innovation, excellence and heritage. It symbolises a badge of excellence within the international community for its member yacht designers, builders, equipment providers and destinations for yachts over 24m LOA. Over the years, Superyacht UK has developed its array of outstanding services available to support the growth of its member’s businesses. This includes a line-up of key annual industry events and activities such as the Superyacht UK Technical Seminar, Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition, Superyacht UK Pavilion at the Monaco Yacht Show and the British cluster in Amsterdam’s METSTRADE Superyacht Pavilion. The association is today proud to boast a sector enjoying its sixth consecutive year of continued growth with revenues rising to £697 million. This represents a dramatic increase of close to 9% on the previous year. Financial results show that Britain’s superyacht businesses alone account for £520 million in Gross Value Added to the UK, while also generating more than £200 million in taxes for the UK’s exchequer in the same period. This growth is heavily driven by the manufacturing and refit sector, which enjoyed a 15.2% rise in revenue last year. The

UK’s elite tier of shipyards, including the likes of Pendennis, Sunseeker International and Princess Yachts, are prospering due to an increase in exports as a result of the weak pound and their established brand reputation seen on a global scale.

The association is today proud to boast a sector enjoying its sixth consecutive year of continued growth with revenues rising to £697 million. An increase of close to 9% on the previous year. In addition, with the number of high net worth individuals (HNWI) growing globally to record levels in 2017, international trade continues to drive growth across the sector, with equity and real estate market growth supporting an expanding customer base for luxury yachts. What’s more, full time employment in the UK superyacht sector has risen by 7.7% to 4,572 across the whole of the UK. However, the prospect of Brexit and continued uncertainty over the UK’s future trading relationship with the EU remains the industry’s main challenge, which isn’t eased by the extreme competitiveness of the superyacht services providers market worldwide. Despite this the continued global dominance of Britain’s superyacht industry reflects the prestige and outstanding quality of UK businesses and their products and services. As representatives of the industry, Superyacht UK and British Marine will continue to work hand-in-hand with its members and the Government to ensure the interests of the market are represented and the sector continues to thrive.

PRINCESS: BRITAIN’S BOATING ROYALTY Frances and Michael Howorth talk exclusively to Antony Sheriff, Executive Chairman of Princess Yachts and his plans going forward for the great British brand

A

ntony Sheriff joined the British luxury yacht manufacturer Princess Yachts as Executive Chairman in January 2016. He graduated with a B.A. in Economics and a B.S. in Engineering as well as an M.S. in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T). Following a consultancy role at McKinsey & Company Antony spent eight years at Fiat Auto where he was Director of Product Development for Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia cars. In the decade preceding his takeover at Princess, he was Managing Director of the luxury car brand McLaren Automotive. Under his stewardship, Princess Yachts is experiencing record growth, advance orders and a return to record profitability underpinned by a renewed focus on quality, technology and innovative product development at Princess’s Plymouth headquarters. This unprecedented commercial proposition is underpinned by a stronger-than-ever presence at boat shows around the world,

at which Princess plan to launch a recordbreaking total of 9 new models in 2019. Writing for ONBOARD Magazine, Frances and Michael sat down with him and asked him about his plans for the great British brand. Antony, under your leadership at McLaren, you are credited with turning around the luxury, low-volume McLaren-Mercedes SLR project to deliver the highest volume of carbon-based road cars ever produced, how did you do that? We worked hard to build a high-performance sports car division which conceived, designed and hand-built a range of carbonbased, ground-breaking and award-winning supercars including the MP4-12C, 650S, 570S and P1 - the world’s first hybrid supercar. At the same time, we built a global distribution network and set the foundations for McLaren to be the elite, technology-driven and profitable luxury sports car brand that it is today.

Having done that for top end motor cars can you pull off the same trick at Princess Yachts? I am sure we can and I hope to deliver on that undertaking soon. It’s a process we have already started. We have already delivered two consecutive years of recordbreaking financial results for 2017 and 2018, with its highest ever sales, a robust return to profitability, and strong advance orders. Financial results for the 12 months to 31 December 2018 show record turnover of £340.3 million that’s 24% up on 2017 figures, and a record operating profit before exceptionals of £29.8 m which is 173% up on 2017. These results make 2018 our most successful year in the 54 year history of Princess Yachts. Besides sales have you broken any other records? Yes, in 2018 we hit a record high for employment of 3,200. Recruitment has taken place across the business

THANKS TO THE POSITIVE REACTION IN THE MARKET TO OUR NEW MODELS, OUR FORWARD ORDERS ARE WORTH £700M AND STRETCH THROUGH TO 2021, AND 75% OF 2020 PRODUCTION HAS ALREADY BEEN BOOKED from engineering to exterior design, manufacturing to management, making Princess one of the UK’s largest specialist manufacturers. Princess also increased investment in its successful apprenticeship programme with 42 new apprentices brought into the business; apprentices now make up 4% of the workforce with a 100% retention rate following qualification. What is your order book looking like? Thanks to the positive reaction in the market to our new models, our forward orders are worth £700m and stretch through to 2021. A 100% of our 2019 production and 75% of 2020 production has already been booked That’s impressive but what do you think is driving that optimism? Princess Yachts represents good value to the UK economy with over 90% of Princess’s yachts exported to customers around the world. True to the motto of ‘Crafted in Plymouth’, over 80% of each yacht excluding engines of course, is manufactured in the city. That must make you feel very proud. Yes, I am really proud of what my team has achieved in 2018. Their focus and dedication enabled Princess to build on the previous two years of solid financial figures and beat 2017’s record results. The team launched six stunning new luxury yachts while growing revenues to over one third of a billion pounds. The strong financial figures we have just spoken about will enable us to build upon our unique, highly integrated infrastructure in Plymouth and invest even more in advanced technologies, new yachts and quality levels across design and production. We continue to forge ahead in our vision to be not just the highest quality, most innovative and successful luxury yacht manufacturer in the world, but also a great British employer. What is underpinning these strong sales, production and recruitment numbers? I think it is the innovative yachts targeting new segments such as the R35, and the game-changing X95 Superfly, a superyacht

due to be officially launched at Düsseldorf in January 2020. As sales, commercial results and recruitment hit new heights, so does investment. Supporting its longerterm plan, Princess continued to invest in a sustainable strategy to ensure that the business continues to drive forward product innovation and its manufacturing capabilities. As a result £14.7m (2017: £8.9m) was invested back into product development in 2018. With over 75% of each yacht manufactured in Plymouth, Princess continues to invest in its UK sites, adding capital expenditure of £9.0m to the additions in 2017 of £3.7m. These are exceptional figures. What are they based on? They are based on a combination of strong sales at the industry’s three biggest global boat shows – Cannes, Fort Lauderdale and Düsseldorf – and new levels of interest in the brand driven by increased investment in design and technology, progressive new global retail partners, and innovative marketing activity. 2019 began in equally buoyant form with strong orders secured at the 2019 Düsseldorf Boat Show in January, which saw 21 yachts ordered, worth in excess of £60m. We are now into our fourth year of a fiveyear £100m turnaround plan since I took the helm in 2016, introducing new processes, technologies and business strategies that combine the best of Princess’s traditional yacht-making skills with best practice honed during 20 years of leadership at international automotive brands. With customer demand at an all-time high, our five boatyards in and around Plymouth are working at maximum capacity and the order books are full throughout 2019 and for much of 2020. Are you having to call upon help to make these investments? To help drive this plan HSBC UK Bank plc and National Westminster Bank plc are pleased to announce their support for the refinance of Princess Yachts, backed by L Catterton which is a partnership between

LVMH and Groupe Arnault, as part of the growth of the business, having constructed a multi-year funding facility as of the 16th of May, this year. You mentioned the R35 a yacht you famously launched as the Bateaux in the Chateaux during the Cannes Show last year What can you tell us about that boat? It is a revolutionary carbon fibre R35 performance sports boat that we built in partnership with Ben Ainslie Racing Technologies – the world’s first luxury yacht with a fully carbon fibre hull. It is a ground breaking new model that has carved the path for an assault of new product designed in collaboration with Princess Yachts, naval architects Olesinski and the world renowned styling house Pininfarina. In building her we are showcasing innovative, lightweight and sustainable materials along with new technologies. She is a fully carbon fibre boat with all the advantages in weight savings, and the Esthec synthetic teak deck, which comprises of 25% recycled materials along with natural resins, fibres, minerals and colour pigments. The active ride control foiling system that we have pioneered at Princess gives fuel savings of up to 30% at cruising speeds on the R35, and I can confidently predict that this technology will soon be seen on future bigger yachts. Does Princess Yachts have a USP? I think our USP lies in our ‘Crafted in Plymouth’ moto. 80% of each yacht (excluding engines and glazing) is manufactured at Princess’s five Plymouth boatyards from raw materials, making Princess one of the UK’s largest furniture manufacturers, and ensuring that it has control over the design, timings and, most crucially, quality. Design is absolutely critical to our success, as it is to all luxury projects. Throughout everything it does, Princess focuses intensely on design elegance and surfacing, ensuring each project is of the highest standard in terms of both aesthetics and build quality. Thank you for talking with us My pleasure. See you at the shows later this month.

YOUR CREW The UK has long been the world leader in maritime training and recruitment. The British based companies have a reputation for delivering the best levels of qualifications and the most professional crew in the industry Words: Frances and Michael Howorth

W

hen it comes to bragging rights in the superyacht industry, Germany can claim to build the biggest. Holland, Italy and even Turkey can all boast about numbers, tonnage and overall length. But, when it comes to designing superyachts it seems that the bragging rights best belong to Britain. The United Kingdom may not build the biggest and the best, but when it comes to flagging, crewing, training, insuring and serving the industry, Britain does indeed, do it best. We are not being jingoistic nor even overly patriotic here. Just look at the facts. The Red Ensign has the largest number of flagged superyachts in the world. The MCA is the code beloved by all. Our courts, lawyers and advocates are the people superyacht owners turn to when they want to negotiate contracts. The majority of the largest yacht brokerage and yacht management houses all started off being British. Look at the crew list and count the number of Brits on board. Chances are they far outnumber the rest and if not by passport, then certainly by the qualifications they hold. It is to Great Britain, that crew turn to when they seek to enhance their career by seeking quality training and qualifications that they can use on yachts around the world. TRAINING If Great Britain has got superyacht design well wrapped up, then when it comes to crew, Great Britain really can boast being the best when it comes to training and recruitment. Over the last 30 years, UKSA has become synonymous with yacht crew training and has helped launch the careers of thousands of individuals in the superyacht industry.

Now under the control of its parent organisation; Solent University, it has branched out into teaching courses in engineering and interior to superyacht crew. For many, it has become the first port of call when seeking STCW, safety and security training.

Based on the Isle of Wight, on the South Coast of England, the UKSA is meeting the increasing demand for trained crew in the superyacht industry, with captains, senior officers and entry-level crew. Located in Cowes, it is perfectly situated for its students to explore the Solent, a stretch of water considered to be one of the best in the world to train on thanks to the relatively sheltered waters. their base – we now have a great network of local businesses within the UK, many of us work collaboratively to help further propel the industry.” Many people work on yachts for just a few seasons, but equal numbers of people choose yachting as their permanent chosen career. At the moment, there is very little in the way of information to guide professionals about how to move around within this space. The British based on line jobs board Yotspot, has made it their mission to rectify this making it easier to see all the opportunities in one place. They have been successfully trading online jobs for the yachting industry since 2010. Steve Crawford, Director, explains their plans for 2019 and beyond. “For years now, we feel there has been a large disconnect between captains and crew who work onboard the yachts and those individuals who work within the shore based side of the industry. We want to bridge the gap and make it

easier to transition between these roles. So now, you can advertise shore based vacancies such as Yacht Sales Broker, Charter Manager, or Designer in exactly the same way you would advertise roles for Captains and Crew. Everything is under one roof, so even if crew a re not directly looking for a post on land, whilst flicking through yacht based positions, they might stumble across a land based job that just makes sense to them.” One final success story within this industry has been the development of Port Profile by Anthony Park. Back in 2004 he jumped on board with his first job as a chef, 15 years later and he’s still there, well sort of, but on a slightly different tack. When Anton decided to dip his toes into the waters of the tech world and create a software-led platform, designed to reshape how recruitment is carried out in the yachting industry, it wasn’t exactly what he set out to do! The tech solution

THE INITIAL CONCEPT QUICKLY MOVED FROM A SUPPORT NETWORK SOLELY FOR CHEFS, TO A SYSTEM FOR ALL YACHTING CREW IN THE INDUSTRY

came much later! Back then, it was still all about cooking. He created a Facebook page in 2015 and called it; Yacht Chef Support Network there are a fair few yacht crew who may remember it, if only for the infamous party he jointly hosted at the Antigua charter yacht show with Shore Solutions, the provisions company back in the day. There are crew who still talk about that part some six years later! “The initial concept quickly moved from a support network solely for chefs, to a system for all yachting crew in the industry. Fast forward and the Port Profile platform went live in April 2019, and we took full advantage of the Palma Boat show to showcase what we had built. Interest came in many different shapes and forms and gave me lots of ideas going forward.” The cost of a posting single job post is £50 plus VAT. That post will remain active for 30 days and then there is an option to extend for a further 30 days for £25 plus VAT. Each paid job post gives the recruiter unlimited access to the extensive Port Profile database for the duration of the advertisement. Anton explains, “I do all the social media postings myself using Hootsuite and various other programmes to schedule posts. As we grow so I will in time be able to employ people. For now, I am proud that Port Profile is helping improve the way crew get to choose their perfect job.”

PORT PROFILE The alternative solution to your recruitment needs. Port Profile is a purpose-built private network, designed and built by yachting professionals to help you discover and apply for the best jobs at sea. Take back control of your nautical career. With Port Profile you can: Search for suitable crew, based on your job post criteria, View and download all required documentation without the need for email, Do everything you would normally do when working with a recruiter or agency, Save paying huge recruitment fees, Chat directly with applicants through our chat app, designed for yachts of all sizes, big or small, captains & HODs . The cost per job post: £50 + VAT and that’s it, nothing more! For more details Tel: +44 (0) 7380892121 or visit www.portprofile.com

By the end of this month, the refit season will be warming up nicely, the bosses will be complaining about the price of everything and the crew will be looking forward to a well earned rest, some time ashore and then the business of refit will start. With the growth of the refit sector in the UK, owners, captains, crew and management companies will benefit not only from state of the art facilities but also from the huge pool of trusted, capable and professional employees within the British marine industry. Great Britain offers extraordinary capabilities in the superyacht sector, from the creation and refit of some of the world’s leading luxury yachts and innovative development and support of high quality equipment, through to key services that owners and captains can trust. Great Britain’s impressive superyacht capability is advocated by Superyacht UK, which in itself, draws upon the resources of the British Marine trade organisation, of which it is a part. endennis’ full-service facility is capable of building yachts of up to 100m, as well as undertaking substantial restoration and remodelling projects, or routine class/flag refit works. To date the company has built over 30 bespoke projects and conducted refit works on a further 250+ vessels. The Falmouth base is supported by a refit workshop in Palma, and a yacht support centre in Auckland, offering clients a global support network during the life of their superyacht. The company boasts 440 highly skilled tradespeople and support staff, and celebrated its 30th anniversary last year. In-house experts, from CAD teams to exterior outfitters, joiners, electricians, engineers, fabricators and specialist painters, ensure maximum control and accountability at every stage of the project. The quality of work stands the test of time, with many yachts returning year after year for servicing. Pendennis invested over £22 million in rebuilding and expanding the shipyard four years ago with this redevelopment giving the yard an extra three purpose-built construction halls and a 7,564m² enclosed non-tidal wet basin, to provide direct deep water seaward access for haul-out, and facilitating short refit works for yachts of up to 100m. An additional flexible 150m undercover dry dock provides project space for larger refit projects, with the complete facility supported by purpose-built workshops and offices. In 2018 Pendennis secured a majority share hold in the Spanish Vilanova Grand Marina, a 48 berth facility with adjacent land available for further development. Poole Harbour Commissioners ensure that all the varied interests operate in harmony, both for the common good and for the long-term sustainability of the whole harbour and its stakeholders. The Harbour Authority is empowered to consent or undertake operations in relation to land or waters within or adjacent to a European Marine Site, and is a relevant authority under the Habitats Regulations. OCEAN VILLAGE MARINA SOUTHAMPTON

aterside access into Southampton became even more stunning in 2018 with the comprehensive redesign of MDL Marinas’ Ocean Village. MDL Marinas is well known for the high level of customer service provided 24/7, and Ocean Village Marina is no exception. Notable innovations include a floating dock office, which offers a full concierge service to welcome guests from around the world. Once berthed, guests can make the most of the linked pontoons which take them straight into the heart of the only five-star hotel in Southampton for spa treatments, restaurants, hydrotherapy pools, sauna, steam room and relaxation areas, or to use the gym. There are many wonderful shops, bars and restaurants nestled alongside the marina, and an on-site cinema featuring new and classic releases. At the edge of Southampton Water, with easy access to the Solent, Ocean Village’s basin was previously used by commercial ships. This means that it is the only marina in the area able to accommodate superyachts up to 90 metres alongside the yachts, cruisers and racers owned by MDL members who make use of the ever-expanding marina network (150 marinas across England, France, Spain and Portugal). Ocean Village Marina’s redesign has proved extremely popular, and with interconnecting pontoons, means visitors can enjoy the best of Solent watersports, and then recover in a five-star environment. In the surrounding areas of the marina, there is easy access to superb and varied cruising. To the west is the picturesque Beaulieu River and the surrounding New Forest. Portsmouth Harbour is only a few miles to the east and is home to a large fleet of modern and historic warships For more details +44 (0)23 8022 9385 on visit www.oceanvillagemarina.co.uk

WE WANT YOU... If you’re not already a member of Nautilus International, just ask an ex-crew member of the Indian Empress if they think it is a good idea... Representatives of the union and its strategic yacht industry partners will be on hand from 25-27 September 2019, based in the ACREW lounge at La Rascasse restaurant. They look forward to meeting existing members, welcoming new members into the Union, and providing guidance on the Nautilus sea service verification process. This will be the first time that visitors to a yacht show will be able to join Nautilus and receive their Commercial Yacht Service Record Book on the spot. All a seafarer needs to bring is a passport-sized photograph and their passport. Derek Byrne, Nautilus head of membership and recruitment, said, “We hope that members and potential members alike take the opportunity to meet some of the team dedicated to looking after them in the superyacht industry.”

W

ho do you turn to if you run into trouble onboard your vessel? Increasing numbers of superyacht professionals are finding that membership of an international union is the insurance they need when problems arise. Nautilus International offers unrivalled support for members in the superyacht industry, with a free 24/7 helpline available across the globe and partner organisations on hand to assist face-to-face in major yachting centres such as Antibes. The union’s main offices are in London, Merseyside, Rotterdam and Basel, and the teams there have an impressive record of winning employment cases – dating back over 150 years. This expertise has recently been extended to a new tranche of members in the superyacht industry, with substantial financial settlements achieved in incidents where yacht crew have not been paid or denied repatriation costs. Advice and support are also offered with issues such as workplace injuries and bullying and harassment. Another attraction of Nautilus membership is the Commercial Yacht Service Record Book. As an STCW-qualified yacht professional,

you’ll periodically need to revalidate your Certificate of Competency or apply for a Notice of Eligibility. In the UK, this means applying to the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) with your signed sea service testimonials (SSTs), which have to be verified.

Existing members should encourage those who haven’t yet joined us to pay the Nautilus team a visit The verification process can take the MCA up to six months, which is why the Agency has delegated the process to Nautilus. When you join Nautilus, you are entitled to a fast and efficient verification service and a free Commercial Yacht Service Record Book – which, when properly completed, is accepted by the MCA as evidence of sea service without the need to be accompanied by SSTs or certificates of discharge. If any of this sounds of interest, why not come and see Nautilus at the Monaco Yacht Show in the ACREW lounge?

“It is a great opportunity to obtain the Union’s MCA-recognised service record book and to seek advice on the Nautilus sea service verification procedure. Existing members should encourage those who haven’t yet joined us to pay the Nautilus team a visit.” If you’re not going to be in Monaco but would like to get your hands on a Nautilus Commercial Yacht Service Record Book, go today to www.nautilusint.org/en/and join Nautilus online. You can choose to join under the reduced Yacht Friends of Nautilus category, but most yacht professionals elect to become full Nautilus members so they are eligible for the Union’s exceptional package of support, protection and benefits.

To gain access to the ACREW lounge at the Monaco Yacht Show, register at: www.acrew.com/events To book an appointment with a Nautilus representative either at the lounge or onboard your vessel in Monaco, please email: yachts@nautilusint.org

GRAND DESIGNS The UK and its designers have always been at the top of global maritime design and the younger generation is following in those prestigious footsteps. From looking at the entries submitted in the 2019 Young designer competition, this legacy is surely set to continue

T

hursday 27th June – yesterday, James Shakespeare, a transport design student from Staffordshire University, won the annual Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition 2019, sponsored by Marine Resources at The Superyacht Design Forum. James’ design was praised for its overall visual style, excellent aesthetics and the eco-friendly features. His presentation skills were also highly applauded by all the judges. The competition is an opportunity for eight 3rd year design students, selected from UK universities to showcase their design ideas to industry representatives. James beat the other contenders in this year’s competition securing himself the prize of a split four-week internship across two of the UK’s leading superyacht companies. To start, James will spend two weeks at the world leading custom superyacht builder and refit specialist, Pendennis Shipyard, where he will have the invaluable opportunity to

On winning the competition, James Shakespeare said, “I am over the moon to have won the Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition. It’s been an amazing experience and I feel so lucky to have met lots of inspiring designers. I loved the James Bond theme and enjoyed creating stylish garages, helipads and casinos for my superyacht design. “The environmental element of the brief was a good challenge and I learnt a lot from the talks at The Superyacht Design Forum. For my design, I created a unique hydrogen system that allows the boat to take hydrogen from the water it’s travelling through and make energy from that. I’m thrilled to be undertaking two internships and look forward to all the experiences I’ll gain.” The prestigious annual Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition is run by industry representative, Superyacht

UK, an association of British Marine. This year the competition took place at the prestigious Superyacht Design Forum in the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour.

For the first time in competition history, following the internship at Pendennis, James will undertake an additional two weeks at the award-winning yacht and superyacht design house, Olesinski Ltd. Across the four weeks, he will be introduced to the world of yacht design, learning how all the different aspects of boat design and production come together to produce beautifully crafted yachts.

It is the only competition of its kind in the UK and is among a select few across the world to recognise future design talent and provide them the opportunity to truly grow such talent within the industry. In recent years, the competition has been a launch pad for some of today’s most ambitious superyacht designers and naval architects, keeping the UK’s designer reputation alive and well.

Jeff Houlgrave, Chairman of Superyacht UK, commented: “It’s been an excellent couple of days watching and mentoring Britain’s next generation of design talent at the Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition. All the contestants produced some very stylish designs, in keeping with the James Bond theme and no doubt inspired by the spectacular setting at The Superyacht Design Forum in the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. As the industry becomes more environmentally friendly, it was encouraging to see the students incorporate a variety of functions in their designs to protect our planet. “This year it was particularly difficult to decide between the top four contestants, but we are thrilled to crown James 2019’s Shakespeare Superyacht UK Young Designer. James was chosen as the winner because he provided the best all round package. He created a feasible and sound concept with quality design.”

Isle of Man Ship Registry

T

he Isle of Man’s yachting cluster is centred around its highly successful International Ship Registry, voted ‘Best Shipping Registry 2019’ and topping the 2018 Paris MoU White List. The Ship Registry is open to commercial yachts over 24m and pleasure yachts of any size. The Ship Registry’s Survey Department is adept at applying the new REG Yacht Code and are always on hand to offer pragmatic advice. Surveyors are based in key yachting locations including Palma de Mallorca and South of France. The Ship Registry also boasts industry-leading systems which include an online finance package and the ability to issue digital certificates. 2019 has been a significant year for regulation because it has seen the introduction of the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code (‘REG YC’) which follows on from ‘LY3’. Like its predecessor, the REG YC is an IMO recognised equivalence to the SOLAS, STCW and Loadline Conventions. The team drafting the REG YC drew on the combined expertise of the Red Ensign Group, with key input from senior policy and survey staff at the Isle of Man Ship Registry. A key aim of the REG

YC was to write in greater flexibility so that designers and naval architects have greater freedom to accommodate the client’s wishes. They know that yachting is an industry which never sleeps, so the Registry Department offers a 24/7 service (by pre-arrangement) for new registrations that are made outside of normal office hours, which is completely free of charge. Once they have received all the documents necessary, full registration can be completed in a matter of minutes. For more details Tel: +44 (0)1624 688500 or visit www.iomshipregistry.com

CRUISING SCOTLAND’S WESTERN ISLES Frances and Michael Howorth jump aboard the Hebridean Princess to explore the coastal villages, history and distilleries on their seven day itinerary from Troon to Ullapool

134 | AUTUMN 2019 | ONBOARD

T

he western islands of Scotland are, for those who enjoy drinking single malt whiskies, the ultimate charter area. We were lucky to again be the guests of Captain David Kirkwood aboard the 72 metre Hebridean Princess as she sailed in this rugged and weather beaten landscape. Chartered by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with her family on at least two occasions, this former car ferry has been converted into a luxury passenger carrier and is available for charter in the Western Islas of Scotland. Dramatic beauty, awe-inspiring castles, and picturesque harbours make this a most welcome change to many more crowed itineraries that are available in northern Europe. There is so very much to do here that it is possible to spend a whole season here without repeating anything.

Whisky is however the draw that brings devotees to this fabulous cruising ground where each distillery is a temple of that religion. Sometimes, just miles apart, each produces a distinctive taste so very different from its near neighbour. The secret is in the malting of the barley, it is that initial process that is so very important to the finished taste on the palate. Some have the strong flavour of peat whilst others barely feature the earthy taste or the smoky aroma. We were lucky to have on board Jim Allen, an experienced member of the Scotch Whisky Experience Tasting Team, in Edinburgh who toured us around the distilleries. A former round the world sailor Jim offers tailor made whisky tours and tastings for superyacht captains cruising the area. His ability to match safe anchorages within in a very close proximity of a fabulous distillery is almost uncanny!

DAY 1 TROON TO ISLAY VIA HOLY ISLAND Collect your guests from Prestwick airport, the nearest of two international airports that serve the city of Glasgow. Once embarked, sail for half an hour across towards the Isle of Arran and tuck up inside the sound that separates it from Holy Island. This latter is owned by Tibetan Buddhist Monks who have established a Peace Centre and Retreat on the island. From the aft deck you can watch as they practice Tai Chi on the expanses of green lawns in front of the massive house that dominates the shoreline. Sail over night the 75 miles to Islay.

DAY 2 ISLAY TO JURA Islay is often called the Whisky Isle and with good reason. There are no less than eight distilleries each making their own particular nectar. Anchor in the south inside the shelter of Port Ellen and you have three famous brands within hiking distance. Choose between Laphroiag, Lagavulin or Ardbeg. Drive back to Port Ellen via Bowman taking the high road. Sail in the evening for Lowlands Bay on the east coast of Jura, a perfect circular bay offering plenty of shelter for a peaceful night at anchor.

ONBOARD | AUTUMN 2019 | 135

DAY 3 JURA TO OBAN Sail through the early morning the 40 miles to Oban. The voyage is through the Gulf of Corryvreckan a passage half a mile wide where tides can and do run at up to ten knots giving rise to strong eddies, tidal races and over falls. The chart warns mariners to transit the area with caution and during our passage the sea was so confused as to make the echo sounder inoperable. Arrive at Oban’s port, it boasts its own distillery and even a 19th century imitation copy of Rome’s Collosseum built of local stone. Stay overnight in Oban.

DAY 4 OBAN TO RHUM VIA TOBERMORY The voyage to Tobermory through the Sound of Mull is best done in daylight hours not just because of the dangers of navigating in such confined waters but more because guests get to see the beauty of the Scottish landscapes, and of course the village and colourd houses from the kids TV programme. Leave Tobermory with time to make the passage to Rhum a distance of some 30 miles. Anchor at the head of Loch Scresort off Kinlock Castle. The island of Rhum offers a variety of hiking opportunities and the chance to see red deer in the wild.

DAY 5 PORTREE VIA THE KYLE OF LOCHALSH This is another of those passages that must be made in daylight for exactly the same reasons. Furthermore the narrow and rock infested passage calls for a transit that can only safely be achieved at slack water. The scenery from on deck remains dramatic throughout as you enter the famous Kyle of Lochalsh. Anchor here off Kyleakin or, carry on up under the bridge towards Portree and drop anchor in the sheltered inlet off this pretty fishing port, which is the principal town of Skye.

136 | AUTUMN 2019 | ONBOARD

DAY 6 PORTREE TO THE SUMMER ISLANDS The Isle of Skye is too important and full of interest to pass by in a day. Guests can spend days here on extended charters but if time is of the essence then the highlights are a road trip to Dunvegan Castle Not enough whisky yet? Then take in the Talisker distillery where the peaty flavour of the spirit is at its most dramatic. Enjoy touring Skyeskins a working tannery where they process sheepskins You really can spend three to four days here. Sail slowly overnight the 50 or so miles to the Summer Islands at the entrance of Loch Broom.

DAY 7 THE SUMMER ISLANDS TO ULLAPOOL These Islands are for the most part uninhabited and offer the most peaceful anchorage in which to wake up and breakfast on deck. They are also a great place to get to use the Kayaks to explore the islands or even the mountain bikes and for those who lack the energy for that just walking in one’s own private nature reserve is reward enough. After lunch sail the last ten miles into the port of Ullapool from where it is a car ride to Inverness airport and back to reality.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TOURISM OFFICE Visit Scotland is the name of the tourist office whose task it is to promote tourism throughout the country. Rather helpfully they have divided the country into areas with each presided over by a team of helpful people who really know their subject. It would be wise to announce to them the arrival of a large yacht into their area and it is likely that captains will be presently surprised by the positive responses. www.visitscotland.com CUSTOMS, IMMIGRATION & REGULATIONS Not matter what the people of Scotland may wish for and suggest is true, Scotland remains part of the United Kingdom and therefore follows the regulations laid down by that country. Once cleared into Europe yachts may cruise anywhere they wish until final departure when clearance should be obtained for yachts leaving the EU. This situation may change after 31st October 2019. NAVIGATION British Admiralty Charts are available for all areas. Visit www.imray.com

WHISKY GUIDE The ultimate whisky guide is Jim Allan, a member of the Scotch Whisky Experience Tasting Team, in Edinburgh. Contact him through www.scotchwhiskyexperience.co.uk OFF YACHT PURSUITS The wise captain makes sure he has kayaks and mountain bikes on board because the guests are surely going to be tempted to use them. But there are plenty of shops that can arrange long and short-term hire of these items. HEALTH AND COMFORT The midge, a tiny biting fly just over a millimetre long, can be a major deterrent to visiting Scotland in summer months. They are attracted by carbon dioxide and can cluster in huge numbers around distilleries and their predilection for the gas explains why they cluster in front of our faces. An onshore breeze keeps them away from the yacht and the wise captain generally seeks out an anchorage that is known to be bug free.

HIKING AND WALKING It may be as well to advise guests to bring boots suitable for this activity. Alternatively a captain could find the shoe sizes in advance and have boots and a smart carbon fibre hiking stick waiting in the guest cabin for them to find on embarkation. Daily information for hill walkers and deerstalkers can be found on www. hillphones.info whilst www.walkingwild.com is a very smart official site run by Visit Scotland. PROVISIONING Lobsters, oysters and fresh fish are best purchased at the fish markets and most ports have one. Fresh fish is abundant and chefs can frequently buy directly from local fishing boats as they land their catch on the dockside. WEATHER The climate in Scotland is notoriously fickle, one minute it is blowing a gale the next it is calm blue seas with sunny skies and delightful enough to swim in waters warmed by the Gulf Stream.

If you’ve ever worked on a yacht or travelled on one, you’ll want to know that it’s run at top class international maritime standards The Red Ensign is a symbol of pride. It represents and stands for all those who are the lifeblood of maritime. We expect and demand high international standards of crew welfare and yacht safety through the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code.
