MONEY NO OBJECT TENDER OR TOY

W

ithout doubt the coolest toy or tender I have come across is the Icon A5 amphibious sport light aircraft. At 7m in length, as toys go, it is fairly large but when you consider how epic it is and what it is, it’s a plane that can land on water, land and even snow, then you soon realise that this space is being taken up for good reason! Clearly this is not something you can just hop into as a charter guest and whizz off for a bit of a jolly

6 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

but for any owner who has bought an explorer with ample storage space onboard, I think you would be crazy not to look into it as an option. To learn to fly an Icon A5 you need to put in just shy of 30 hours of lessons or flying time if you are a complete beginner. Imagine flying over the glaciers in the Antarctic or island hopping in the Pacific or Indian Ocean at speeds of over 100mph, powered by the Rotax 912 100hp engine – simply amazing!

BEST LOOKING TENDER

W

ith the exception of the Dutch boat builder Wajer who are producing some fantastic looking boats, when it comes to knock out good looks, you need not look much further than the offerings from Italy... so it should come as no surprise that I am going to propose a Riva! On one of our largest charter CAs, the 74m Trinity COCOA BEAN, is a beautiful Riva Iseo 27 which

she carries onboard. Painted to match the livery of her mother ship, they look stunning as a pair in the water. This particular Riva Iseo 27 is a little different from the standard model as it is full enclosable in the event of inclement weather which as we know can certainly spring up on us from time to time! The Iseo 27 is a perfect blend of classic lines and modern systems, utilising water jet propulsion.

MUST HAVE TOY

I

t is very hard to single down what the ‘must have’ toy of the moment is and for that reason the owner of our most popular charter CA, the 60.93m ARIENCE, has gone for pretty much every toy in the market to satisfy as many tastes as possible! Within the list of 29 different tenders and toys (some of which there are multiples of each!) that ARIENCE carries, there are certainly some stand out favourites. Captain Dean has somewhat mastered the Zapata Flyboard Pro and along with the multi award winning crew is more than happy to teach guests how to get to grips with it – it takes 5-10 minutes to learn to balance and about an hour to become really proficient. Should the guests not be up to the task of handing it themselves, Captain Dean has been known to take guests for a flight around the yacht on this magical device. Powered by one of the three Waverunners onboard (ARIENCE carries 2 x Yamaha FX Cruiser SVHO and 1 x Yamaha Superjet) the Flyboard runs off a 23m hose which means you can safely distance yourself from the Waverunner and also reach pretty astonishing heights out of the water!

TENDER REFITS CONSTRUCTION REPAIR REMODELING

BEST GENERAL-PURPOSE TENDER

O

ne of our most recent Feadship new build projects was the 76m SHERPA. As she is an explorer (the second ever from Feadship) she really needed a very reliable, hardy general-purpose tender. After considerable research it was decided that the SAFE 35 by Safe Boat was the best solution for the owner (NB there are other tenders onboard). Powered by 3 x 350 Mercury outboards she is extremely fast and relatively easy to maintain with easy access to her engines and other technical elements onboard.

Safe Boat not only build private vessels but they also build for law enforcement, firefighting, military and search and rescue. They are extremely robust and able to handle the most inclement weather and seas. Having already navigated the North West Passage and having travelled all the way down to New Zealand, the SAFE 35 has really been put through its paces and thus far has worked seamlessly. She’s not going to win any beauty parades, but is capable of handling the worst that nature can throw at her.

BEST HELICOPTER

N

ot the biggest but the most impressive helicopter tender I have seen is the custom Airbus AS365N3 Dauphin on the 99m Feadship MADAME GU – a new build commission by the team at CWP and for a time, the largest yacht ever launched from Holland. When it was delivered it was (and might still be) the only non-military Dauphin to have a collapsible tail so that it could fit into the vertically loaded helicopter hangar in the bow. Able to achieve over 170 knots and with a range of over 500 miles, the AS365N3 is extremely fast and capable by normal helicopter standards. To be completely honest, helicopters are not an area of specialty for me, so I regularly turn to my chief advisor Serena - a broker with Blueberry Aviation. Coincidentally she is also my wife! In fact, she informs me that the AS365N3 is now a bit old hat and the best helicopter tender to have is the newer Airbus H155 Dauphin… but it might just be because she has one for sale at the moment!

POWERBOAT SAFETY BY DAY AND NIGHT T

he qualification most requested by the yachting industry for using a yacht tender is the RYA Powerboat Level 2. This qualification covers the skills needed to handle a small powerboat such as coming alongside, man overboard, safety and regulations.

Philip Godwin RYA Advanced Powerboat & Yachtmaster Instructor looks at the benefits of the RYA Tender Operator Course

This course is great for anyone starting out in the industry, but it is not specifically geared towards the more demanding situations that deck crew are often faced with, such as operating at night and embarking passengers. Further training courses have been developed to fill the gap between Powerboat 2 and Yachtmaster training which many deck crew go on to later in their careers. The RYA Tender Operator was specifically developed for yacht crew engaged in transporting guests form yacht to shore. The course aims to further the skills learnt on the RYA Powerboat 2 by placing students in more demanding situations. For instance, on a typical Powerboat 2 course a student would be taught to dock alongside the fuel berth inside a port. On the RYA Tender Operator course a student might be asked to berth alongside a typical quay for restaurant in an open bay. Further discussion and training would include how to ensure guests could then be disembarked safely from there. The RYA Tender Operator course moves onto planning coastal passages, by day and night. It also includes search patterns. It is often taken by the operators of chase boats and larger tenders that operate at longer distances from their ‘mother ship’. The use of electronics, such as chart plotters, is covered on both courses. It is recognised that these are not always fitted to a yacht tender, so the courses also teach the importance of traditional pilotage and route planning.

12 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

TOP TIPS FOR SAFE TENDER OPERATION BY DAY AND NIGHT We have compiled our top tips that we emphasise on these courses. 1. Controls Check that the vessels engines function correctly. They should not start in gear and the kill cord should work. Kill cords should always be worn. The preferred method is around the leg where it does not become tangled with steering etc. and will not slip off. It is also worth having a procedure that the boats helm station should never be left unattended whilst the engines are running. A possible scenario could be that whilst the helm is helping a guest onboard the vessel is accidentally ‘knocked’ into gear with disastrous consequences! Not all small craft have the ‘interlock’ which keeps the controls in the neutral position and modern electronic controls only need a feather light touch. 2. Safety equipment The vessel’s safety equipment should be easily accessible. Too often the safety grab bag is stowed under seating which is difficult to access. A throwing line should be kept ready, and at night a search light. Whilst the guest tender should look aesthetically correct, it’s advisable to spend some time planning how the equipment might be used and stored so it is ready immediately. 3. Make sure you have a plan! A passage plan is required by the SOLAS regulations for even the simplest and shortest of journeys. A sketch can be used or with headings and notes on any hazard, and land/sea marks which can be used to aid navigation. The plan should be easy to read and follow, and at night should take account of any unlit marks/buoys. This plan and the ETA should be logged with the bridge before leaving the vessel.

4. Make sure your passengers are safe Particularly at night and bad weather, automatically inflating life jackets fitted with water activated lights should be worn. Ensuring life jackets are being worn by the crew for their safety and as an example is suggested. It is worth considering that the time stepping from the yacht into the tender is potentially the most dangerous. Lifejackets are better fitted whilst still onboard the ‘mother ship’ (or shore for the return journey). Extra crew on the aft deck is also advised. 5. Be prepared before operating at night What might be a simple ‘tender run’ by day can be a completely different experience at night. It is important that additional checks are carried out before operating at night, lights working, and pilotage plans are suitable. Wherever possible it is advisable to ‘recce’ the proposed route before by day, to familiarise yourself, without the added pressure of having a boat full of guests in the hours of darkness!

The course aims to further the skills learnt on the RYA Powerboat 2 by placing students in more demanding situations.

6. Make sure the vessel is correctly lit and you can be seen It is important to ensure that you can not only be seen by other vessels, but they can determine what type the vessel is, and in which direction you are heading. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (or ‘Col Regs’ as they’re more commonly abbreviated to) specifically detail the lights that a small craft should show. The 360-degree white light required for vessels less than 12 metres is often removable to provide a low profile for storage in a tender garage. This light is often not fitted and just the red/green port and starboard navigation lights are shown. Not only does this make the vessel harder to see, it also means there is no light from the stern of the vessel. If being overtaken, the vessel may not be seen until the last minute and from other angles the vessel can be confused with a sailing boat. This is potentially dangerous if the ‘sailing vessel’ suddenly accelerates the way a fast tender can! We recognise that most yachts operate their tender safely, but we hope you find these tips useful as a check. For more details contact: info@oceanpro.co.uk www.oceanpro.co.uk

ELECTRIC DREAMS Over the past few years we have seen more and more exciting electric tenders hit the market and are confident this much needed trend will continue

E

ach year we see more electric tenders hit the market which is very encouraging for the industry. To be fair, I believe most of this innovation is coming from our Scandinavian brothers and sisters with northern Europe also putting in a good show. We believe that some lakes and inland waterways in these regions actually ban gasoline or diesel engines on boats, so this seems to be a main driving force. However, I would think that these regions are also up on the use of most types of electric vehicles.

dock areas around the Cote d’Azur, in a way taking the lead from the Tesla charging stations you see, but this technology needs to be more visible in the marinas around the globe.

That being said, there are British and western European designers coming forward and offering electric packages on some of their traditional platforms.

Another comment that we are hearing is that while the electric tender industry has already made fantastic progress when it comes to speed and range, technology is evolving so quickly at the moment, that we predict the coming generation of electric tenders will not only be customisable, but also a lot faster and able to travel even greater distances.

What the world wants now is a solid state lithium product. But that is about 4-5 years away. In the interim, the scientists at MIT are working on ways to come up with a different answer. Until then, in the consumer watercraft world, lithium batteries as we know them will continue to propel us. The good news is that the battery capacity to deliver the travel range boaters want, increases every year. And as result, the price per kilowatt is also decreasing. Whilst talking to some prominent designers and electric tender manufacturers, we hear that the next big thing is super-charging up to 150 kW, similar to speeds available for advanced cars today. This will allow boats to charge in something like 30 minutes. Today, most boats have onboard chargers that convert the ACpower from a regular 3-phase outlet to DC-power for the battery. Super-charging, or DC-DC charging, can remove the bottleneck of the onboard charger and charge the boat at a speed that is five times faster, if not more. We know that Vita Yachts in cooperation with Hydro CIRCLE have installed power units in some 14 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

But let’s face it, the average tender needs to ferry guests for about 10 minutes from the mothership to the quay side, deliver them in a dry and comfortable state and then toddle back to base camp. Then when the radio comes to life, scoop the guests up and deliver them back safely for another night cap in the mothership. Keep the RIB for the fun water sports, or if you are that good maybe look at the new electric Super Air Nautique GS22E. Instant torque delivered straight to the prop and about 2-3 hours of fun. So, the answers are there but will our owners buy in to this new and much needed revolution? How many owners drive an electric road car I wonder? Have faith though, there is serious enthusiasm and some brilliant minds at work to make this happen.

FRAUSCHER

T

he Frauscher shipyard started with the production of wooden electric boats in 1955, mainly for boat rental on the lakes. In 1971 a ban on combustion engines during the summer months at Lake Traunsee and most lakes in Austria and Southern Germany was issued. This boosted the demand for electric propulsion systems: low maintenance combined with a silent ride made it possible to enjoy the lakes once again. This new technology was rapidly enhanced: fibreglass and carbon fibre have replaced wood and modern lithium batteries are now in use. The new electrical engines are becoming more and more powerful and are beginning to compete with combustion engines. The usable range is also steadily increasing, allowing greater independence and more practicality while on the water. SMART BOATING ASSISTANT Come rain or shine, get up to speed quickly with Hefring Marine, to train and guide your boating experience The rising wave Seafarers throughout history needed methods to ensure that they would reach their destinations safe and sound. Methods for navigation included everything from observing the motions of the stars to creating myths and stories that could help transfer knowledge down through the generations. Ægir and Ran, the Nordic god and goddess of the sea had nine daughters. The daughters were depictions of wave spirits and their names reflected different characteristics of waves. One of the daughters was named for the rising wave. Her name was Hefring. Sustainable practices The Hefring Marine system is designed to promote sustainable practices, improve on board welfare and safety and reduce power demand during vessel operation. Research has shown that up to 96% of boating accidents are caused by human error, operator inexperience, excessive speeding or improper lookout. The core of the system is data analysis and interpretation for improved safety and efficiency. The system comes with a sensor kit that can be permanently installed or easily fitted into any boat. The sensor connects to a mobile device, tablet or phone, where data can be viewed in the system´s app or to leading multifunction displays. Safe speeds and impact limits The system analyses a vessel’s motions and speed and determines a safety speed limit, which is shown to the operator on an intuitive gauge. Another gauge shows the impact forces, but the system continuously calculates a safety speed which minimises these impacts. Because the system actively recalculates the vessel´s speed where unwanted motions are minimised, the ride becomes smoother, therefore more fuel efficient and reduces impact-related vessel maintenance.

Guidance and active training The system provides guidance and active training, important for any operator and less experienced vessel operators in particular. All trip data is analysed and collected to a cloud server, offline options are available, and presented in a report format in an administration portal. Research has shown a 60-70% reduction in impact and motion as a direct result of the system’s operation guidance. This can result in less accidents, reduced fuel consumption and a decline in impact-related maintenance costs for the vessel. AI and improved decision making An updated version of the system is currently being developed and to be launched in 2021. This will feature NMEA2000 connectivity for vessel data so that all systems data is captured as well. This system will not only provide real-time insights, but also predictions using advanced artificial intelligence to improve decision-making further. This system update will also provide heading and route guidance so that difficult conditions can be avoided and safe and efficient motions and speed can be maintained. Superyacht tenders There are direct benefits of using the Hefring Marine system in yacht tender operations and management. It´s designed as a intelligent boating assistant, to train and guide, improve decision making and ensure trips are safer, more efficient and comfortable. The system also offers a web portal for trip logs and reports allowing yacht management companies, yacht captains and yacht owners to follow how yacht tenders are being operated. The maximum allowable speed and wave impact limits for the tender operation can be set in the fleet administration portal and which controls how operators follow that maximum allowable speed and impact threshold. The web portal provides access to data, reports and logs on operation and operator behavior in a transparent and easy to understand report. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Powered either by PWCs or outboard engines, the revolutionary Sealver Waveboats, made in France, are blazing the trail for all-in-one, game changing tenders

T

he WaveBoat combines the sensations of riding a jetski, the driving thrills of a powerful GT car or sports boat, and a luxury terrace with sea view for 5 to 10 people on board…” summarises Patrick Bardon, founder and CEO of Sealver Waveboat shipyard, on France’s southwest Atlantic coast. Since 2009, Sealver, now selling WaveBoats in more than 50 countries, has pioneered and developed a patented technology which allows to connect and release a wide range of PWCs from the WaveBoat’s hull in just a few seconds. Conceived as a proper boat, the WB floats perfectly without the ski. You can switch anytime and anywhere from a familial sea outing - fishing, sunbathing, sharing a meal on the sundeck - to a more sportive navigation, unleashing the power and reactivity of the impeller. “Sealver WaveBoats offer you the best of both worlds,” explains Patrick Bardon. “Thanks to our compatibility kits for all major PWC brands - Yamaha, Seadoo, Kawasaki you can switch from a jetski model or brand to another with the same WaveBoat, just by changing the removable kit. The unique system adapts to each brand of PWC. The RPM remains the same, only the dynamic of the vessel changes.” Once connected, the WaveBoat (approved as a class C boat) offers an incomparable comfort of navigation: the

safety of an engine with secured propeller, a low draft, incredible power-to-weight ratio, outstanding manoeuverability and speed for a unique freedom on water! PWC OR OUTBOARD PROPULSION Now offered in 11 different models, the WaveBoat concept embodies the perfect tender for any yacht or superyacht’s owner, depending on the space available on the ship and nautical activities practiced. The whole range combines luxury, comfort and performance, from the compact, handy and super reactive WB 444 ‘Rider’ (14 ft, 5 passengers) to the spacious and elegant WB 656 ‘Dandy’ (21ft, 7 people), with its unmistakable sporty look and high bow. As innovation remains the driving force of the french shipyard, the Z-Line, launched in 2019, is the new Sealver Premium range, and marks a real turning point in the current

nautical landscape, with performance-minded RIBs (Z6, Z7 and Z8, respectively for 19, 23 and 26 ft, 7 to 10 people) that can reach speeds of up to 50mph and delivers a lot of space and luxury for passengers. Cutting-edge technology and design is used in every stage of construction, with new generation of progressive carbon Hypalon floats, sharp ©Hevo hull structure-created from the latest hydrodynamic simulation algorithms and state-of-the-art amenities, offering the space and comfort of boats that are usually much longer and wider. Customisable with a lot of add-ons on all Sealver models, the Z-Line even offers the owners the radical choice between turbine (PWCs, Hevo technology) and outboard propulsion, thanks to the exclusive system HYBRIS™, that can support engines up to 300 HP. “This new line of semi-rigids 2.0 takes Sealver WaveBoat to the next level,” assures the CEO. “The fact that you can choose between a propeller or an outboard is something that has never been seen before in the entire history of maritime leisure and this is something we’re extremely proud to be offering.” For more details Tel: +33 5 58 78 45 00 or visit www.sealver.com

LASTING IMPRESSION The tender market has changed enormously over the past 10 years. Henry Ward looks at the importance of design cooperation early in any new build project to ensure the tender complements the mothership and delivers the required results for the owner Ten years on, I am happy to say that we are now contacted by owners, owners’ representatives and captains to design and custom build tenders early on in the mothership’s commissioning process such that our current ‘in build’ projects have all enjoyed the benefit of comfortable lead times. Each owner has a unique set of requirements and priorities so in an ideal world, we meet them or their representatives to find out what matters to them most, including how they actually wish to use the tender. Whether they require high speed, a comfortable ride, enough space for a large refrigerator or even a carbon fibre dog bowl – whatever they want, they can have! This personal interaction informs our creative process and with a design in mind, we are then able to liaise with key players on the build team of the mothership in order to establish how our product can fully complement and integrate with theirs. This collaborative approach impacts positively on the crew’s operations because we can advise on the required lifting arrangements, agree the space that is needed around the tender and plan the systems layout so that servicing is hassle-free.

S

ince I joined Cockwells in 2011, I have witnessed some welcome developments in the superyacht tender market. Back in the early days, for example, buyers tended to commission their superyachts first and then the tender as something of an afterthought. Decisions regarding the tender came too late in the design stage of the mothership by which time the space available in the tender garage might already pose a constraint. This also limited the time available for a custombuilt tender to be carefully considered and

30 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

Thankfully, most owners now realise that the tender they deploy from their superyacht impacts directly on the quality of their guests’ overall experience and requires a level of consideration equal to the design of the mothership itself.

Cockwells currently has a 12m catamaran tender in build for which the client requires a top speed capability of 50 knots. By joining forces with experienced naval architects and race boat designers on our projects, we can be confident at the design stage that our tenders will achieve the required speed. For extra reassurance however, we tank tested this particular hull design at the Wolfson Unit in Southampton to obtain real-life scaled data to support our calculations.

As the saying goes, “you never get a second chance to make a first impression” and the tender is likely be the guests’ first, last and lasting impression of the owner’s luxury superyacht.

In this case, the hull design was developed specifically for a particular client, but usually, it is far more economical for us to use a proven hull design that we already own the mould for. To date, we have produced

crafted before delivery of the main vessel was due.

With an adjustable transom plant, we can also produce boats that vary in length and are capable of offering a multitude of custom deck arrangements. When we were commissioned to build the tender for Grace E, a waterjet driven boat, we worked with leading hull designer, Andrew Wolstenholme to design our first mould and he ensured that the hull form was suitable for both jet and stern drives. One of Cockwells’ defining strengths is that we have the flexibility and expertise to offer clients exactly what they want.

Looking to the future, we have received numerous enquiries about electric tenders and it goes without saying that we would love to produce such a vessel. However, our detailed research and in-depth review of sea trial data concludes that for an electric boat to be a success, the limitation of range needs to be accepted by the crew.

This requires careful planning in terms of how the tender will be used, which can be challenging and a step into the unknown. It would also help if the cruising speed requirement could be lowered because you can travel all day in comfort at 12 knots from the same amount of power required for an hour at 20 knots.

Every new brief is exciting for the team to work on. We are at our best when problemsolving, identifying solutions to those design issues which others say can’t be achieved. Unfortunately, if you want to go electric and go fast, the battery technology of today does not currently offer a useful range. It’s a catch 22 situation. To get a boat to plane, you need lots of power. Lots of power comes from big batteries, which are heavy and to move them, you need more power.

We have reduced the amount of wiring on our tenders by 50% as data messages become the desired form of communication and with this advanced programming no longer limited to ‘on’ or ‘off’, clients are no longer limited by equipment, just their own imaginations!

It is only a matter of time, however, before propulsion from an alternative power source will be a realistic choice and we can’t wait to be able to experiment with that.

Every new brief is exciting for the team to work on. We are at our best when problemsolving, identifying solutions to those design issues which others say can’t be achieved. Each boat we build becomes part of the Cockwells family and is backed up by a personal aftercare service and the very best onboard and remote technical support.

The designs of the future that we are working on today have advanced digital switching systems, which enable our boats to be fully remote-controlled. Our highly-skilled engineering design team is constantly pushing the boundaries in this field and is working with key suppliers in the industry to improve their components by asking the question: “What if it could do this…?”

Founded by Dave Cockwell in 1996, Cockwells celebrates 25 years in the business this year. I have had the good fortune to be part of the team since the company’s first tender launch, T/T Grace E. Prior to that, Cockwells specialised in bespoke sail boats

and motor launches designed to meet the exacting standards of private individuals, so it was a natural progression for the company to expand into the luxury superyacht industry and produce exceptional tenders with optimum performance in mind. From our purpose-built, low environmental impact HQ at Mylor Creek in Cornwall, we utilise natural resources responsibly and embrace the potential of modern materials and processes to help us innovate and create a sustainable future. The future may be electric, but it is how we combine artisan craftsmanship with the latest technological advances and manufacturing processes that will always set Cockwells apart.

SITTING PRETTY

ULLMAN DYNAMICS Ullman Dynamics pioneered the suspension seat market for military high-speed boats. Thanks to their unique, progressive suspension technology, preventing seats from bottoming out while absorbing both lateral and vertical impacts, they are a leader in this market. Today Ullman see an increasing demand from the super-high-end tender boat market. As many tenders now get used for more adventurous transits, owners prioritise comfort and safety more than ever. Yacht owners are demanding custom designs and finishes, and Dr Johan Ullman, (who also invented Bluetooth(, should know - he coined the claim, “If it feels good, it most probably is”. www.ullmandynamics.com

With tenders becoming more powerful and owners wishing to visit seas in locations that are typically a little rougher than the Med, shock mitigation is more necessary than ever

T

he impacts occurring when hydroplaning boats slam on the waves, can cause severe and sometimes permanent injuries. The injuries are never anticipated until they occur - just like any other accidents. Most ‘suspension seats’ offer vertical mitigation in the lower range of impacts forces. Any boat ride can be enhanced if you can sit comfortably and feel safe even at speed, this is not just important for guests but for the crew who are riding in the tenders for extended periods of time. Some suspension seats can also significantly reduce injury risks by mitigating the impact forces travelling into the human body. A well designed seat can also help to optimise posture for impact protection and comfort. Some seats, however, bottom-out under high level impacts. Bottoming-out can actually amplify the impacts by up to three times on the seated person compared to the hull impact. The risk of injuries depends, not only on impact levels, but also on the direction of the impacts. The ability to maintain body posture and control balance, curvature of the spine and balance of the head while seated can also be paramount. Many injuries and the worst, are caused by high-level impacts and by impacts with lateral forces. Lateral impacts can also cause overboard ejections which can of course be lethal. When choosing suspension seats, you need to consider the features that can help mitigate these potential injuries, as well as a robust track record for protective capacity, usability and durability. This can be the most important decision you make for your boat. Ask people about their experiences of different seats and try out the seats in relevant conditions. If you are uncertain, make sure you can test the seats by borrowing or purchase with buy-back guarantee. This can save you a lot of trouble and costs by trying before buying. 34 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

POINTS TO CONSIDER IN THE BUYING PROCESS •

Type of suspension – single axis travel or vertical + lateral suspension?

Range of impacts without bottoming out – what forces can the seat take?

Sitting posture – can you sit with a neutral spine rather than a C-shape?

Comfort – your seat should be comfortable at low speed as well as high speeds.

Setup and Pre-flight operations – does the seat ‘just work’ or are you required to set it up or ‘pump’ it to a certain pressure before you can go?

Maintenance – What kind of maintenance is required to keep the seat working?

Warranty – What warranties do the manufacturers extend?

THE ART OF TENDER GARAGE DESIGN With limited space in some tender garages, we ask Josh Richardson to highlight some of the important aspects to consider when utilising the space for the storage of your tenders and toys through rubber pads on the deck. This lifts the tender a few mm from the deck, enabling you to push the tender around the tender bay by hand. The chocks are controlled by a remote and are built to have some friction so that the boat cannot slide unless being pushed. Amazingly a 30 foot boat can be moved by one or two crew. When the boat is where it needs to be stored, then you reduce the air pressure, and it falls on its pads. This is hugely advantageous for yachts as tenders can be moved without the cranes (apart from over the side into the water operation) and they can be pushed into the smallest spaces close to bulkheads and other tenders. For those thinking of installing these, be aware you need a smooth flat floor and grainy non-slip will not work. Large items like surfboards, sailboats and slides are often designed into the chocks themselves to take up minimal space.

Dual purpose chocks

I

t goes without saying that the space of a tender garage or lazarette is premium real estate. With costs on occasion being upward of €1m per metre of length of superyachts, there is a clear compromise on living space for an owner when deciding what size garage to have on their yacht. Typically, this space is packed to the rafters trying to fit the largest tenders and number of toys possible. There are a number of new innovations which have come into the industry to address this storage need and offer hugely practical advantages to consider having on board. PACK THEM HIGH The hydraulic jetski lift is one such example and enables you to have two jetskis, one

38 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

above the other. This can mount on a bulkhead or have two units back-to-back if you have 4 jetskis. Simply put, you slide one jetski onto the lift on its trolley, connect and then press a button and it lifts to the ceiling. You then have space below it to slide in a second on its trolley. These lifts are available for sit down waverunners and stand-up skis. Moving tenders around with cranes has inherent risks and can be very limiting in terms of where you situate the tenders on board. The latest types of chocks being fitted on new builds are Hover Chocks. These are available for tenders and jetskis. You connect the ship’s pressurised air to the chocks and this is pumped through the inside frame of the chocks and expelled

STORAGE OPTIONS For those small garages one area of constant struggle is where to store toys and often the area overlooked is in the tenders themselves. Increasingly we are involved in specifying storage for Seabobs inside lockers, dive bottle racks and SUPs etc.,

Hover chocks

There are a number of new innovations which have come into the industry to address this storage need and offer practical advantages for the crew. into the tenders themselves to leave space in the tender garage for other equipment. ROAM tenders have inbuilt storage for all adventures and toys. REMOVABLE BOARD STORAGE Choosing tenders with integrated storage from the outset is sensible. Nautique Boats have some immense standard storage on board, able to swallow huge amounts of gear and boards, all of which is self-draining and ventilated. On a recent Nautique delivered to a yacht, we got involved in designing an additional removable board storage rack which can mount in the Nautique when stored. One area often overlooked is having tenders which fold such as the F-RIB. The F-RIB as an example can be assembled and inflated in

SUP Storage chocks less than 5 minutes with no hassle and extra parts to worry about. Simply fit the two bolts and inflate. These compact inflatable boats have a rigid fiberglass hull making them very resistible to wear and tear. Increasingly popular on large yachts is the iLC (Inflatable Landing Craft). This is fully inflatable apart from the transom and can come in various sizes up to 7m long. The whole boat is able to be inflated and in use within 5 minutes, with the 5.5m version packing down to 1.5m x 0.7m x 0.4m.

This is an ideal way to get another tender onboard, which offers some usability not provided by traditional tenders. The iLC is the perfect watersports safety boat, crew boat and beach lander offering shallow draft, folding bow door and massive load carrying capacity able to take quadbikes, motorbikes and more ashore. Whilst tender manufacturers complain about storage spaces and low crane capacities for tender handling, deckhands and officers complain about the yacht toy and equipment

The size of the tender garage should be dictated by the owner’s wishes for the experience he wants from a tender. The tender should not be a last thought. storage, and both are more than often correct. Increasingly we are getting involved in advising on storage of yacht toys as the range and amount of equipment is pushed. With owners trying to pack in as many items as possible making this neat, organised and importantly having items available for maintenance takes some consideration. We find that if toys are hard to deploy, recover and store these do not get used. The negativity soon gets passed to owners and they stop asking for large inflatables and others. Getting this right from the beginning makes a huge difference. There is increasing thought from owners’ teams on this and employing specialists to provide drawings, weights and dimensions of equipment to help make choices on what is purchased makes a large difference. DON’T FORGET THE TOYS There is no getting away from the rise of electric powered toys, whether this be a stand up jetski like the FFF, an electric surfboard like the Lampuga, or the wellknown Seabob amongst others. Often these are required to be permanently or regularly charged and the racking of equipment, with charging is required. This needs to be considered as soon as possible in the

build to avoid extension leads being laid over the deck or just in the way. These docking and charging stations are crucial and need to be accessible. Storage of watersports equipment is a large consideration, as buoyancy aids, impact vests, wetsuits and scuba kit takes up a large amount of space. With yachts trying to cater for every guest the amount of equipment carried can sometimes be vast. A recent 74m outfitted had 96 wetsuits for example! Having these all on rails, dry and easily accessible for guests is no easy task. Drying rails should not be overlooked. Whilst everyone wants more space, without question a well-planned garage can make the enjoyment of owners and the life of crew easier and more productive. Clever racking of equipment in advance of a new yacht launch means that equipment is used more, and crew are more positive of it to owners, in turn increasing the enjoyment of using it. Whilst bigger and better is often the brief from owners, there is a fine line to create the right packages and it is a challenging tightrope to walk. For

Tender dive rack all owners, management companies and representatives the assistance of a specialist company like Superyacht Tenders and Toys who know the products, and the builds makes a significant positive contribution and should not be overlooked. EARLY PLANNING The size of the tender garage should be dictated by the owner’s wishes for the experience he wants from a tender. The tender should not be a last thought, as it is vital to the smooth operation of the ship. We all know the first and the last thing the owners and guests use on their experience onboard is the tender. Getting off dripping wet ready to get into the limo to go to the airport is an experience to avoid.

Jet ski lift Given the owner’s brief, the tender garage should be sized accordingly and box dimensions known so that tenders can either be purchased off the shelf to fit, or custom built as required. On production builds like Princess, Sunseeker etc., these are often designed specifically around a type of craft such as a Williams tender, Pascoe or Castoldi. Due to the garages being very specific to that tender, there are often not any, or many alternatives taking any choice or owners’ preferences out of the equation. So, remember just plan early and talk to all those involved in the design and build process and find out early what the owners REALLY want. DEMONS The outboard market has seen a massive surge over the past 12 months. ONBOARD takes a look at some of the advancements in the gasoline, diesel and electric segments

T

he past 12 months have certainly made us focus on the little things in life, like enjoying ourselves. Getting back to nature and out on the water, remember that?

Redesigned inside and out, with added features, updates and improvements that make these acclaimed V6 outboards better than ever. With easier maintenance and tougher corrosion resistance. www.marine.honda.com

As expected the USA has seen the greatest growth along with recreational boating, much the same as the previous year. Sales of outboards globally however, have soared, whether you’re boating on a lake in central Europe or on the eastern seaboard in the USA, it is a very attractive and a welcome relief from confinement.

EVOY

150HP

The diesel out board manufacturers are full steam ahead with R and D, and are producing some amazing machines giving more power with less weight. Hefty investments and support from the military sectors are still driving this sector, but within our industry, the need of not having to carry gasoline onboard certainly produces some safety benefits for the mothership and I am sure we will see diesel outboards on the back of some more sexy superyacht tenders over the coming months. In general terms an outboard engine offers the crew on board a far easier task in terms of maintenance, they are highly accessible and if there is any major issue, just remove and replace - simple. Even with these gasoline engine, RnD is still a top priority and todays engines are cleaner, lighter and still able to offer plenty of torque. The electric outboards are coming on strong too, the Norwegian company EVOY leads the way and offers a very pleasing 150hp model with the promise of a 300hp and even a 450hp model just around the corner. 48 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

he new Crewsaver range of lightweight inflatable boats are high-quality tenders designed for all-round use, whether you are looking for a quick and easy-to-launch boat to get you ashore or simply wanting a little fun on the water. Available in three different sizes, with either a slatted or air deck for easy stowage and transportation, the boat is designed for up to three persons, with sizes ranging from 185m to 260m in length. Each version of the Crewsaver Inflatable Boat is quick to inflate/deflate by way of one touch inflation valves. Rigid and robust, and manufactured from high-quality materials, the design features welded seams and a PVC laminated solid transom which can be fixed to stern davits by using integral davit eyes and a davit ring. Additional stainless-steel lifting points on the outside of the bow facilitate towing and lashing operations. A wide rubbing strake offers all-round protection during those moments when coming alongside. The solid transom accommodates a wide range of traditional and electric outboard engines, offering both a stylish and practical inflatable tender. Every Crewsaver Inflatable Boat is kitted out with a high-capacity pump, repair kit, two paddles, mooring lines, a sliding alloy seat, and a carry valise. The new range marks Crewsaver’s entry into the inflatable boat market. The company, widely regarded as the foremost supplier of lifejackets and safety equipment to the leisure marine sector, has incorporated the technology, design and build quality inherent to parent company Survitec’s established commercial marine and defence rescue boats. Since market launch earlier this year, Crewsaver says the new boat range has received a high volume of orders. Indeed, with many marinas now beginning to open following Covid restrictions,

an increase in water-based leisure pursuits is expected as boating enthusiasts reunite with their craft. However, Crewsaver advises to thoroughly inspect boats and safety equipment before heading out. Lifejacket fabric, for instance, should be checked for cuts, tears, abrasion and signs of damage caused by heat before manually inflating and leaving it for 12 hours. A lifejacket that is leaking will not hold its firmness and must be replaced. Crewsaver, a Survitec brand, is a world-leading manufacturer of marine safety equipment and clothing for the commercial and leisure marine industries. The company designs and manufactures safety equipment for the maritime, defence, energy, and aerospace industries. Crewsaver is the only company to hold an exclusive contract to supply lifejackets to the UK government’s Environment Agency and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). COCKWELLS AIR-SPORT 7M As you would expect from the award-winning British boat builder, this design is like no other. Offering all the usual advantages of inflatable tubes to fender off against both mother ship and quayside, Air-Sport 7.0 combines the practical attributes of a RIB with all the style and luxury of an open limousine. The big difference is the sociability of the seating space. RIBs are often overly functional with the tube taking most of the useable space away from the passenger area. This design incorporates all the comfort and sociability of a high-end rigid craft with the practicality of tubes. Powered by a 250hp Yanmar diesel engine with stern drive it hits a nifty 36 knots. www.cockwells.co.uk

The main focus for these incredibly advanced 9.2m D-Rib tenders was noise reduction; the two tenders use Rolls Royce jet drives and 400hp Volvo engines. No stone was left unturned and with German engineering diligence, every aspect of the boats came in for close scrutiny. Working from the engine beds to the air intakes and outlets - and the engine capsules, examining structure-borne sound and airborne sound - no element was left untouched. ADVENTURERS Enrique Tintore, SeaXplorer Design Manager looks at The design philosophy behind the new generation of expedition yachts

106 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

F

ollowing the first three sales from the SeaXplorer range and 2020’s milestone deliveries of ANAWA and LA DATCHA, the design team has been hard at work updating the range of luxury expedition yachts. With feedback from their amazing clients, SeaXplorers are right at the forefront of explorer yachting. What is the SeaXplorer range? SeaXplorers are our luxury expedition yachts. At Damen Yachting, we’re unique in having the knowhow from both Amels luxury yachts and Damen commercial and naval ships. That makes the SeaXplorer different. It’s a crossover of Amels’ luxury pedigree and Damen’s shipbuilding technology. So there’s no compromise. Can you tell us about the next SeaXplorer projects? We’ve learned a lot during the past five years. Every client comes with great ideas. So with our future designs, we’ve built in customisation options. Particularly in the aft sections clients can customise their SeaXplorer for their favourite adventures – anything from seaplane deployment to ocean research laboratories. But they still benefit from the proven platform in terms of value and time. What defines an expedition yacht? Visiting the polar regions once in their lifetimes is on just about every SeaXplorer client’s bucket list. But so are many tropical areas where the operational challenges shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s about staying safe in isolation, but also about enjoying the yachting lifestyle to the maximum. In fact, you don’t need to go very far from the major superyacht hubs before the benefits of a SeaXplorer become clear. That’s the philosophy that our line-up reflects. How has the market changed since the SeaXplorer’s introduction in 2015? Explorers are increasingly popular. The new build market in particular has developed a lot recently. I think more adventure travellers appreciate the idea of being autonomous, being safe in isolation and getting that excitement that goes beyond conventional yachting. But without compromising the luxury lifestyle. How do you see the future of expedition yachting? The future looks very exciting. If you look at the rapid technological advances recently, it’s opening up seabed exploration, scientific discovery and anthropology to privately funded individuals in a very viable way. It can be really fascinating to combine family adventure and curiosity about the world with a philanthropic goal. As yacht builders, we also see our responsibility in reducing the footprint of our yachts. All SeaXplorers are now offered with a minimum of hybrid electrical drives (PTO/PTI configuration) and battery bank for highly efficient cruising. hat’s it like diving a SEAmagine sub? When you step off the yacht onto the solid teak deck of the submersible, you are not only walking toward its large entry hatch and into its luxurious cabin; you’re also being invited into a vibrant universe of underwater life, teeming with vivid scenes of awe-inspiring creatures existing deep within the sea. You are entering a portal to a world of adventure and excitement you haven’t even begun to imagine, complete with the peace of mind that your entire experience is blanketed in the safety of the most innovative, rigorously tested, and proven submersible available to the yachting industry. A smooth steel handrail guides you safely into the spacious cabin of the SEAmagine sub where, upon entry, you are immediately captivated by the beauty of the deep blue ocean surrounding you. As you take a few steps and recline into the plush interior seating, you are enraptured by beams of light sparkling across the gently moving ocean currents and the panoramic view from inside the remarkably expansive viewing bubble. As the sub quietly moves away from the yacht and submerges deeper into the aquamarine waters, the transparent bubble by which you are encapsulated becomes seemingly non-existent and the barrier between you and the underwater world disappears as you effortlessly enter a whole new universe. Your excitement builds as the waves wash above your head and the light from the surface dims into the dark blue. Your attention is commanded by the sprawling view ahead and you peer into the ocean knowing you are about to come face to face with the undiscovered mysteries of the deep. Whether your passion is sea-life or shipwrecks, you are no longer restricted by dive tables, tight wetsuits, flight schedules, and decompression times. You can sit and watch the underwater world for hours, go deeper than ever before, or simply have a quick dive and be back just in time for dinner. As the sub smoothly ascends back toward the yacht, you begin to see the familiar sight of light beaming through the water. Slowly rising back to the surface, you hear the excited chatter of the other passengers in the background. You exit your seat, climb the steps, grab the rails, and step back onto the yacht. Imagine the excitement of everyone from grandparents to grandchildren who have never before been on an underwater dive; being able to share those moments together and bond over your mutual understanding of unbelievable deep-sea sightings and your endless passion for exploring. Dinner is served accompanied by the stories of today’s dive which become intermingled with endearing memories of the past and plans of future possible adventures at new locations. THE SUBMERSIBLE EVOLUTION Submersibles did not start as sleek underwater vehicles such as the Aurora models SEAmagine offers today. In the past, manned submersibles were purely

industrial machines limited to research ships, the oil sector, and the defense industries. A traditional sub required that the passengers board it while it was still sitting on the ship’s deck and it was then hoisted overboard with the occupants inside of it. This industrial approach required ships to have large manrated cranes and significant infrastructure to operate any submersible. When SEAmagine came along in 1995, all of this changed. The company revolutionised the world of submersibles by changing the infrastructure required to operate a small sub from a ship. SEAmagine conceptualised and patented submersibles capable of being launched without passengers on board, giving yacht owners and passengers the capability to safely and easily board the sub after it had already been launched in the water. This original design and operational aspect had never before been thought of and has become SEAmagine’s legacy as well as the industry standard. ONBOARD | TENDERS & TOYS | 119

SEAMAGINE’S AURORA MODELS Not all submersibles on the market are the same. Incorporating elegance, style, and attention to detail, SEAmagine’s Aurora designs take a quantum leap in elevating the underwater experience for owners. Our vessels have unmatched maneuvering agilities allowing for extremely close-up viewing of the underwater scenery as it unfolds before each passenger’s eyes. Because it is unencumbered by the typical overhead entry hatch and other bulky, vision-obstructing structures commonly seen on other submersible concepts, the Aurora’s large, spherical cabin window offers a superior, unobstructed field of view to the occupants. Another advantage is the Aurora’s entry and exit arrangement for passengers. It is much more comfortable for everyone as the top deck is safeguarded by built-in hand rails and a staircase which leads passengers through the large entry hatch to a spacious seating area. This design alleviates the need for passengers to perform an awkwardly uncomfortable set of manoeuvres simply to get seated inside their sub. MORE CHOICES FOR THE YACHTING SECTOR There has been far greater usage of and activity surrounding personal submersibles over the past five years than in the twenty years prior. The submersibles of today, SEAmagine’s Aurora models being at the forefront, are designed and built with the yachting sector in mind. As a result, owners and captains have a much greater choice especially with SEAmagine’s subs that can be conveniently streamlined and specially designed to be seamlessly compatible with the specifications of any given yacht. The Aurora submersibles are a culmination of SEAmagine’s long standing engineering expertise gained from an unsurpassed legacy of over 12,000 dives accumulated on the company’s fleet with a perfect safety record. SEAmagine has a solid reputation for providing dependable, worldwide support and assistance to captains and crews in delivering exceptional submersible experiences to the yacht owners. SEAmagine Hydrospace Corporation produces 2 to 7 person models of its personal submarines for depths from 100 metres to 2500 metres deep. All personal submarines and private submersibles are based on the company’s patented technology that provides excellent surface stability as well as superior underwater performance. All of the company’s submersibles are classed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and approved by the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry (CISR). ADRENALINE RUSH With the help of Andreas Lakeberg we look at the electric surfboard market and discover the best boards available whether you’re an experienced user or a novice

W

ith the quantity of jet boards coming on to the market it is important to understand the difference in the terminology and also to understand the usage of the board. Andreas and his team have tested many of the available boards, testing reliability, robustness and how they fit the needs of the rider in various conditions. There are three mayor categories of electric surfboards called eFoil, Jetboard and Electric SUP. ELECTRIC SUPS An E-SUP is a stand-up paddle surfboard with an electric motor, which only allows low speeds of up to 10 km/h. You can get complete electric SUP surfboards with integrated battery and jet engine as well as conversion kits. Such a conversion kit replaces your fin on the existing SUP and transforms it into an E-SUP. Prices range between 1,000 and 3,000 EUR for such boards. JETBOARDS Electric jetboards reach speeds up to 60 km/h and are available in multiple sizes. Larger boards make it easier for beginners while smaller boards with less volume make the ride more agile and allow sharper turns. The run time of the jetboards is usually around 20-40 minutes with one battery charge and it takes about 2-3 hours to charge them. Prices range between 8,000 and 30,000 EUR mainly, depending on the power. 124 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

EFOILS Over the past two years the eFoils basically took over the market of electric surfboards. The main reason is the much higher range (up to 90 minutes) which is possible because the electric hydrofoils need much less power once they start flying. The feeling of the ride can be described as snowboarding in powder. While eFoiling is not so much about the speed they can reach up to 45 km/h. The eFoils are certainly an eye-catcher in any marina. They are more silent than jetboards and don’t create waves. This is why some regions face less regulations for eFoils. The prices range between 12,000 and 16,000 EUR. GENERAL GUIDELINES Compared to petrol powered jetboards, the electric surfboards are not only much more silent they are also basically maintenance free. Just rinse them with fresh water and use some contact spray - that’s it. You can charge the batteries on any 110-240 Volt power outlet. Some yacht insurances may require fireproof transport and storage boxes for the powerful lithium-ion batteries. Andreas has worked with manufacturers of eSurfboards as well as freight forwarders for dangerous goods to deliver a solution. A combination of aluminum cases with fireproof cushions for each battery type of the different electric surfboard vendors.

jetboard is an electrically powered surfboard, where the rider controls the speed using a hand-held remote control and uses weight transfer to manoeuvre the board. With an exceptional growth over the past years, jetboards have gained popularity and momentum worldwide, and are often referred to as ‘the next big thing in water sports’. The Lampuga Air from the German manufacturer Lampuga is an electric surfboard that offers great water fun and is enjoyable for all riders, regardless of experience level. This innovative board makes the surfing experience more instant and accessible. There is no need to paddle and control is easier, shortening the lengthy learning process and allowing the user to experience the thrills on the water. So it’s little wonder that this watersport has quickly become popular, and that jetboards are increasingly a must have yacht accessory. HIGHTECH MADE IN GERMANY The inflatable Lampuga Air delivers continuous power, speed and stability on the water. Designed and produced in Germany, the board is built to the highest safety standards, employing modern electric technology and is completely emission free.

The board’s lithium-ion battery allows for a riding time of up to 45 minutes and when exhausted, its handy plug-and-play battery system allows for an effortless re-charge or a quick battery change. Powered by an electrical motor, the board is accelerated forward by a jet drive to a thrilling top speed of 50km/h. The Lampuga Air has a unique and patented design, which makes it one of the most flexible and practical electric surfboards on the market. The board consists of two parts: its inflatable hull and the technical Powerbox, which allows for easy transportation and storage. Once disassembled and deflated, the Lampuga Air requires minimal storage space and will fit into the trunk of the average car or into a boat or a yacht with limited space. The board is assembled and water-ready within a few minutes and is equally quickly disassembled. Five minutes after arriving at the chosen jetboarding destination, riders have inflated the jetboard’s hull, attached it to the drive unit and are ready to go! PURE WATER FUN The Lampuga Air offers fun and exciting experiences on water with the touch of a button. It can be used in a seated, lying

and standing position and is suitable for all riders. As opposed to other boards, the air inside the board’s inflatable hull allows the Lampuga Air to float when the rider’s weight is added to the board. This enables the rider to stand on the board before accelerating and offers a reassuring cruising experience where the rider always has a safe surface to rely on. In short, a Lampuga jetboard offers you all the tranquil possibilities of stand-up paddle boarding and the speed and excitement of a surfboard, all rolled into one environmentally friendly toy. They are easy to use no matter the level of experience of the user or their confidence on the water and are an invaluable part of any on-board toy cabinet. Who could resist? 4 TRUK (CHUUK) LAGOON, MICRONESIA Often called the ‘Pearl Harbour’ of the Japanese World War II fleet. Located in Micronesia, the lagoon was Japan’s main base of operations in the South Pacific. In 1944 the Japanese naval fleet came under attack in Operation Hailstone which lasted three days. 12 Japanese warships and 32 merchant ships were sunk. The coral-encrusted wrecks attract a diverse array of marine life, including manta rays, turtles, sharks and corals.

4 5 SCAPA FLOW, ORKNEY ISLANDS Known as one of the world’s best dive locations, thanks to the presence of wrecks from the German High Seas Fleet, famously scuttled by their interned crews in Scapa Flow in 1919. Of the 52 vessels sunk, seven remain on the seabed and it’s these awe-inspiring wartime ghosts that attract divers from around the globe each year. The three battleships remain the main draw to Scapa Flow, resting upside down on the seabed at a depth of around 45 metres.

The wide range of dive experiences Oyster Diving offer have been chosen by their fully-qualified divers to provide you with the best group diving holidays available. For more details visit www.oysterdiving.com 136 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

Objects of Desire

Jacques Cousteau’s Diving Saucer I

nvented by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and engineer Jean Mollard, SP-350 Denise – also known as the ‘diving saucer’, was a small submarine that could hold only two people. It was built in 1959 and after rigorous testing, it became a permanent part of Cousteau’s famous research vessel, Calypso. The mini-submarine was only 2m in diameter and 1.43m high, but capable of exploring depths of up to 900 metres (1,300 feet), although it was never used for dives over 300 metres (980 feet) for safety reasons. The crew members would

138 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

enter the submersible through a hatch on the top of the hull. The two people inside had to lie side-by-side on mattresses, watching their surroundings through tilted portholes which to be honest must of been agony. Denise’s propulsion consisted of electrically powered water jets that allowed it to move at a speed of 3.7 km/h, or 2 knots. Electric lamps were fitted for night diving and to provide illumination for photography at greater depths. In the 1960s, the SP-350 diving saucer received two little sisters: the SP-500s, or Sea Fleas.
