COMMENT
Stick to what you know ONBOARD’s resident sage asks “What makes architects think they can design a superyacht?”
I
t is always slightly worrying when a shipyard finds the need to bring a concept to the market place. It has a whiff of desperation about it, a sort of “Look chaps we haven’t got enough work so what about taking a punt on this one!” I cannot think of many concepts that have been turned into successful yachts except perhaps that odd looking thing that was built for Steve Jobs before he died. I can at least understand the idea of bringing a workable concept to the table but I find it hard to look kindly upon professional architects who design marine carbuncles and then call them superyachts. Successful and sought after superyacht designers, draw on their own understanding of ships, the sea and what is possible to build when they draw the lines of a conceptual vessel. That understanding comes after years of working with shipyards, yacht owners and having sailed occasionally in yachts they have designed. In short they know what works and what does not! There is a very good reason why these highly successful yacht designers never get involved in designing skyscrapers. The reason is that they do not fully understand the complex problems involved in making such a design, a reality.
Good on paper Sure they can draw a skyscraper and give it perhaps a twist, or a top floor balcony that overhangs the foot print on the ground but they have no idea about whether or not it will stand up to the winds a gale force 8 might inflict on the structure. So very sensibly they stick to what they know and are good at. So I would like to ask, why do the likes of ‘Gerkin’ architect: Lord Foster, the Haute Couture fashion designer: Elie Saab and recently the Pritzker prize-winning architect: Zaha Hadid think they can draw a superyacht? Hadid collaborated with the Hamburg-based shipbuilders Blohm + Voss to design a new superyacht. In recent years the German shipyard has built many of the world’s most prestigious superyachts. This, their latest concept, is based around the sculptural form of a master prototype conceived for a 128 metre yacht and creates a family of five individual 90 metre yachts that explore the design philosophies of the master prototype. The concept was, from a public relations point of view a staggering
success. The world’s press gave the shipyard acres and acres of coverage in lifestyle and design oriented magazines all stating how wonderful the new yacht was going to be. Very few suggested that it was a concept or that the idea was to start a conversation about building a boat. They all leapt to the conclusion that the German Shipyard that built the Bismark was going to build a yacht that looked like Gruyere Cheese. Fortunately, nobody at Blohm + Voss actually suggested that the “mother ship” concept would ever work as a functioning vessel. But equally no one in yachting circles pointed out that there was nowhere to hang fenders, no exhaust outlet, no tender doors, no navigation lights, and no communication domes. No one questioned the navigating officer’s view from the bridge or suggested that deck crew would find it impossible to clean! Hell, if you ask me as drawn by the architect the thing probably wouldn’t even float upright!
Working together To be fair I have talked with the Blohm + Voss naval architects and from them I learn that they have worked very closely with the designer to ensure that the “children” would “work” could be built and would meet all of the classification and safety standards along with the practical requirements of crew and guests. But having looked at this design and the carbuncles drawn by other well meaning soul looking for a fat fee, I think, on reflection, architects are better off designing multi storey car parks, car show rooms and airport terminal buildings and they should, I think, leave superyacht designing to the experts.

Yachtie Types The New Money Owner They’ve got a very successful business on land, they’re super efficient, and they like to cut costs wherever they can in order to streamline production and make more money. They know nothing at all about yachting but as they’re now super rich, guess what? Yep, they’ve got one. And they want to run it like a fish gutting factory. Any captains seeking to educate and who like a challenge, this is your perfect owner! Chief stews get ready to provide five quotes for the napkins they want, not to mention the uniform… And engineers? Get ready for some explaining on why you need tools to fix things. Best part? Enjoy your season at anchor, admiring land from afar, because you’re damn straight he’s not paying those ridiculous berth fees in that marina.
A mythical creature shared by Phoenician and Greek mythology. It has typically been depicted as a horse in its forepart with a coiling, scaly, fish-like hindquarter. Poseidon, was not only the god of the seas but also god of horses and earth quakes. It is said that he was drawn by the ‘brazen hoofed’ horses over the sea’s surface. Poseidon is often seen in Roman imagery driving a sea-chariot drawn by Hippocampi.

RACING Always hot in sailing! Regattas have kicked off in style across the Med with an exciting Loro Piana in Sardinia and we saw a rematch of the Js once again in Palma’s Superyacht Cup.
GAME OF THRONES It’s featuring right on the cusp of Hot/Not because the season finale left the entire GOT population shouting at their TVs/laptops. What the....? Is that it? Really? Wow. Amazed? Yes, us old timers were. Needless to say, quite a lot of new crew went home jobless this season. Just goes to show that if you want to build a career in yachting, you have to work hard.
CROCS They’ve never been hot, they’re still the number one form of contraception on the market. Never, ever, has anyone been heard saying “Wow I love your crocs, fancy going out to dinner?” Basically, unless you’re a hospital worker, a chef, or under seven years of age, there is absolutely no way to get away with wearing this footwear. HIKING SANDALS Possibly the worst offenders in men’s footwear. Looks like a full shoe with oddball cut outs. We’re sure they are comfortable with all those synthetic water-absorbent materials, but they are hideous and you’re not eleven years old anymore. TATTOOS David Beckham can get away with it, the Chilean soccer team can (in a kinda gang way), but a budding yacht crew can’t. Just not acceptable I’m afraid. MY OPINION
Making a clean sweep of it Ken Dales from bluewater yachting looks at the industry’s current views on crew safety
I
know many within the “professional” yachting industry will say ‘Here we go again health and safety poking its nose into our industry why can’t they just leave us alone?’. Well, I’m sure those who don’t have to use the above product may say that, but lethargy and the inability of some people not to see the ‘wood for the trees’ there is no excuse for not ensuring the safety of crew or dayworkers.
through the morning. The other guy was okay, neither had been drinking the night before but both had been using teak cleaner through the fore-noon with no personal protection. They both seemed quite happy that the hard skin had been removed from their feet but neither thought about the consequences of the substance entering their blood stream via absorption.
Some teak cleaners are assigned as dangerous goods to one of nine classes dependent on the main danger presented. Corrosive materials (Class 8) are liquids or solids that cause full thickness destruction of human skin at the site of contact within a specified period of time; or a liquid that has a severe corrosion rate on steel or aluminium, some teak cleaners fall into the class 8 category.
So, why do we let our crew, who we train and say we care about, work with substances without the correct protection? I believe that the main cause of these injuries is the inability of management to identify how a specific product should be used safely onboard. After all cleaning teak for example has been known as a ‘Deckie’s pedicure’.
Over the past two years I have seen four individuals who have been injured having used various teak cleaners. They all agreed that something should be done to stop deck crews from being injured by these cleaning products.
Burning question Just recently, two weeks after having delivered safety information to crew, a young deck-hand approaches me and shows me the chemical burn injuries he had sustained to both his knees and arms. Asking him how he received them, he told me, he’d been asked to clean the teak deck with a well known cleaning agent without foot /hand/eye protection or product information. When I asked ‘why’, his reply was ‘I was told to just get on with it’. He then added, ‘you should see the state of the Bosun’s hands’. Obviously two wrongs do not make a right. Another incident recently observed onboard was one where two deckhands came into the crew mess for their morning break, One guy said he had a terrible headache, which had come on
To serve and protect
There are biodegradable, MARPOL approved products available on the market, but there is still only about a 10% take up in these compared to the more dangerous substances. From discussions I’ve had with various professionals, it is in their opinion that the bio products may not be as effective as the original teak cleaners. Does this way of thinking dictate the use of the older products over the latest environmentally approved products? The following advice should be taken when using any type of chemical onboard: •
Read the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
•
Follow management company or yacht’s written safety procedures for the product which should include a Risk Assessment. If unsure check up on the internet.
•
If personal protective equipment is available, use it. If it is not available get it before the work commences.

CELEBRITY
THE ORIGINAL SEAFARER If you’re planning on taking to Mediterranean waters this summer you may find yourself sharing ocean space with Hollywood’s most prolific contributor, Michael Douglas. Words: James Evans
T
he rugged yet ever so polished star has devoted 50 years to the Hollywood game, and in return has been rewarded with a host of high-profile accolades. The winner of four Golden Globes, one Emmy and two Academy Awards, Douglas is currently juggling a separation from his wife Catherine ZetaJones with tongue cancer, and has come to terms with the imprisonment of his eldest son Cameron for drug related charges. The silver haired movie star may have a lot to contend with right now, but it seems he takes as much inspiration from the high seas as he does the characters he plays. After all, having emulated a swashbuckling yachtsman in Romancing The Stone, Douglas should be more than a bit partial to a stint on the big boats. Recently starring in the romantic comedy And So It Goes, Douglas captures the curmudgeonly realtor and singleton Oren, who suddenly finds himself in charge of a nine-year-old granddaughter he’s never met. For a man known to draw resolve from his characters, does Michael, like Oren, find his temper shortening as he approaches the big seven-o? “I don’t know if we all do, but if you lost your entire career, lost your home, lost your wife through cancer, the son you’ve never seen before reveals you have got a granddaughter… well, that’s a lot to take in!”
Wise guy Thankfully, it seems Douglas is addressing his onscreen alter ego’s circumstances, rather than his own. But the actor himself? He may be older but perhaps that means he’s getting wiser…“Well, maybe a little. No, there’s nothing good about getting older. I mean, I feel good that I am getting older. When you have cancer if they don’t succeed with the chemo radiation then they have to do surgery, which in my case would mean taking my jaw away, so my career would be over. “When that’s your reality and they tell you that you are clean and everything is fine, and then, all of a sudden, I have these wonderful parts that I never anticipated like Behind the Candelabra, and Last Vegas. Well, I never anticipated being this active, but I certainly feel as though I have a new lease of life.” “Sometimes when you’re younger you care what other people think and you make an effort for strangers while you take the person closest to you for granted. But after a while you learn what the priority should be.” 20 | SUMMER 2014 | ONBOARD
He may approach it with good humour, but for Douglas ageing seems far from a welcome phenomenon. Besides, at 69 years old he’s a long way from the end. “I think at every 10-year advance you consider how young you were 10 years previously. I did it at 30, at 40, at 50… I’m still doing it now. So I don’t take all that too seriously. “What’s important is enjoying life,” he says, offering a knowing nod to a passion for yachts that has decorated much of his celebrity life. “I do get snapped a lot out on the seas and I love the freedom it offers. It’s a completely different way of relaxing and reclining. There’s a calm motion, a relaxed feeling of calm. It’s unbeatable.”
All at sea Douglas, often spotted on a £50million Mary Jean II yacht, and who takes to the waves with celebrity friends including Jon Bon Jovi and Flavio Briatore, first explored his passion in that famous closing scene of Romancing The Stone. “Driving a yacht through New York was a fitting final scene to a memorable movie. I don’t think many people can say they’ve done that!” His portrayal of the charismatic and carefree Jack T. Colton in that movie set a trend. Future roles have been intentionally left of centre, but the actor is keen to share some salient advice that has followed him through his career. “Somebody said to me early in my career, ‘the camera can tell when you are lying’. And so the early part of my acting career I was like, the camera can tell when you are lying. And it was ripping the skin off my face. With the reality of trying to find a truth and honesty of the scene and the character, I was so terrified and so tight and I didn’t think it was truthful.” “And then one day I said, ‘Wait a minute, people lie; they lie every day.’ People look me right in the eye and I lie. And they don’t know,” he laughs, “So I said to myself, acting is just lying. It’s just telling a really good lie. “People say, ‘Well how do you live with that character when you go home?’ and I said, ‘I get into my clothes and I go home.’ It’s all over and it’s all in a day’s work. And I will try to be as believable as I can, but I am lying.” Thankfully Douglas didn’t employ his knack for professional fibbing when he and Zeta-Jones received a fine for allegedly breaking immigration and anti-terrorism laws by mooring their yacht in Liguria without the correct permission and documentation. Rather, they got hit with a hefty fine…“I couldn’t lie my way out of that one. It was a fair cop, but an honest mistake!”

great attention to aesthetic detailing provides a sleek look that implies a sense of power and seaworthiness. The design incorporates extensive use of glass. The yacht has exceptionally large windows in both the hull and the superstructure. The glass is flush with the metal rather than being set into it, creating a continuous surface.
Doubling up One of the yacht’s most innovative exterior features is the super large sundeck that doubles as both an open air or interior space with full air conditioning, thanks to the surrounding glass panels that can be individually raised and lowered. The interior styling, by Redman Whiteley Dixon, is sympathetic to the exterior theme and is both elegant and progressive, using dark timbers, polished stainless steel and fine detailing.

The interior arrangement features a rotating circular floor in the main saloon, allowing the seascape to be admired from any direction with ease. The engineering of this feature relies on compressed air to provide silent, frictionless rotation at the touch of a button.
Keep it simple The owner likes to keep things low key and casual and as a result of this the yacht is manned leanly. Captain Mark Smith says, “That is not to suggest we do not work as hard as other yachts or that she gets less of a service. We are never going to charter. During the design and construction the focus was to stay under 500gt. She is registered as a commercial yacht not in trade. Our crew consists of three permanently employed staff, and I hire an extra three or so
during the season. There are no water sports on board and the owner is happy to drive the tender himself, which means we only need have one deckhand. I am more than happy to help with the wash downs ready for when the boss turns up.” He adds, “She was built to fit this berth in Antibes because the owner owns it, so we spend a lot of time here in the summer and of course throughout the winter. Our year begins with a full house at the Grand Prix in Monaco and continues at a less frantic pace over the summer with the boss on board for around 60 to 80 days. He is very organized, we know when he is coming who will be with him and where we will be going. In short the near perfect boss!” Reviewed by Frances and Michael Howorth

As usual, it’s the yacht agents who have a handle on local customs, the best sights to see and are able to cater for all your wants and needs on the Eastern Mediterranean
Croatia
C
2C Yachting operates in Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Turkey and Sardinia and was set up by the American Clifford H. Polley, a yacht owner. Back in the early 90s, he saw a gap in Turkey’s yachting industry that needed filling and created the sort of agency that he wanted. Polley rates Croatia highly as the ‘biggest tourism surprise in the Mediterranean these past few years … with a strong ‘will’ to provide 5 star services’. The country has 5,835 km of coast line including 1,185 islands and reefs, 47 of which are inhabited. Crime is low, life quality is good and living is cheaper than in the West. The country has eight national parks and four pretty close to the sea; Brijuni, Kornati, Krka, and Mljet. Dubrovnik, Trogir, the Starigrad Plain in Hvar and the Plitvice Lakes are UNESCO designated world cultural heritage sites. Mljet National Park in the north of Mljet was designated such in 1960 to protect an original eco-system in the Adriatic. Sapunara beach is said to be one of the most lovely stretches of sand in Southern Dalmatia.
A collection of caves and coves invite you to Vis Island plus great food and wine. Polley recommends the restaurant at Villa Kaliopa. Hvar town is Croatia’s answer to St. Tropez with a pine tree lined shore and pretty little harbour and a little bit of bling thrown in. 2300 years of history and sunlit stone palaces make the island of Trogir with its knots of tiny streets and wide seaside promenade so pretty and, ‘a remarkable example of urban continuity’, says UNESCO. C2C recommends cruising up the Krka estuary to get to Sibenik and moor at Skaradin, a village and marina. From there visit the seven spectacular waterfalls of Krka National Park. More Croatian musts include the (147) Kornati Islands, Rovinj on the Istria Peninsula and the 14 island archipelago of Brijuni National Park accessible by yacht only at Mali Brijun or Veliki Brijun. Veliki is the former holiday home of Yugoslav President Tito, his car memorabilia, golf course, safari park and zoo intact and open. Zrce beach, Novalja on Pag Island is Croatia’s answer to the Ibiza beach party scene, three open air clubs along the white pebbles.
KS SHIPPING KS Shipping offers professional services to yacht owners wishing to use the advantageous Malta Yacht VAT leasing scheme. This incentive applies if a yacht bought by a Maltese company is leased for a minimum period of 1 year to a maximum period of 3 years to another related person or company who will pay VAT on the lease payments. The VAT Department has implemented this scheme by virtue of which the payment of VAT upon the purchase of a yacht which is privately used is considerably mitigated depending on the actual time spent by the yacht in EU waters, which is determined on the basis of the yacht type (sail or motor) and its length. Upon the exercise of the purchase option the vessel is transferred to the lessee and a final VAT payment under the Scheme is made. A VAT paid certificate by the Maltese authorities as an EU member state is granted accordingly. The scheme requires the boat to be in Malta on commencement of the lease agreement. f I have one piece of advice’, says Captain Gianluca Devicienti, Managing Partner of Marine Shore Assistance (MSA) based in Ancona, ‘It would be to Charter Managers and it would be this: ‘Go to Montenegro’. It really is an amazing country with an incredible Ancient Greek, Roman Byzantine, Christian and Ottoman history and I’d really like them to come and see for themselves. I just think it is such a shame when yachts ‘touch and go’ in Montenegro or come for bunkering. I really think there is a lot for clients to enjoy here and we have 200 days of sunshine.’ Julian Madsen is Commercial Manager for BWA Yachting. He notes that the new charter regulations in, for example, Croatia, mean this year more charters are beginning in Montenegro and Turkey, still exempt from VAT; ‘Formalities in the East Med are becoming increasingly complex with new mandatory documentation requirements not seen before. These require a diligent local agent to keep up to date with vessel-specific changes, which can vary from port to port, as well as staying proactive on the client’s behalf even before the port of call to avoid the risks of arrests and unnecessarily long charter immigration procedures’. His advice is to consult agents well in advance and use agents who have a proper presence in each cruising area to reduce paperwork and avoid miscommunications. He adds, ‘There is no doubt that the east med continues to represent one of the most
spectacular cruising grounds we have, and proper planning is really everything needed to make the most of it’. Yachts are required to enter the republic by Bar, Zelenika, Kotor, Tivat or Budva, the designated ports of entry. All yachts must have a vignette while sailing in Montenegro waters. The vignette system is very userfriendly and with VAT on maritime related services cut from 19 per cent to 7 per cent Montenegro is all set to revive its ancient maritime heritage. Other bonuses include no sales tax on yachts delivered from foreign shipyards when those vessels are registered and owned outside Montenegro. Fuel and lubricants are duty free (a saving of about 40%) provided that the foreign-flagged yacht temporarily leaves Montenegrin waters within 24 hours of refuelling. There’s unlimited berthing (no tax issue), and no custom tax on incoming provisions or parts.
Centre piece As Gianluca points out, if you looked at the world map and tried to find the centre, Montenegro is probably as good a bet as any. It is bordered by Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, Kosovo to the east and Albania to the south-east. Its capital and largest city is Podgorica. Jelena Macic works with yacht agency BCM Kotor, ‘For owners and passionate explorers’ who wish to visit the beautiful Adriatic Sea, she suggests noting the following: At 13 km long, Velika Plaza is the longest beach on
the Adriatic coastline: The Boka Kotorska Bay is the only fiord in the Mediterranean Sea: The Biogradska Gora National Park is the second largest untouched forest in Europe: Lake Skadar is the habitat of 270 bird and 48 fish species, including 15 endemic ones:The Cathedral of Saint Tripun in Kotor is 69 years older than the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. The super megayacht marina of Porto Montenegro burgeons in the Bay of Kotor: near the Venetian towns of Kotor and Perast it now offers 250 berths up to 150 metres with an accompanying luxury marina and residential and retail complex. Porto Novi near the medieval town of Herceg is more maritime luxury that will offer 250 berths and residences by late 2016. Lustica Bay is a project combining a marina and adjacent marina town with Gary Player 18 hole golfing town. Accommodating boats up to 60 metres long, the area around the 176-slip marina will be bordered by a collection of marina side apartments, townhouses and villas, 24 hour security, shops, restaurants and amenities. The party town of Budva and Ulcinj have adjacent sandy beaches and preserved medieval cities while the Mediterranean architecture flavours Kotor and Herceg Novi explains C2C. The Venetian influenced towns of Ljuta, Dobrota, and Prcanj, with their large stone houses are as charming as they ever were and Perast, a conservation town of Baroque palaces, can be reached directly by boat.

aterina Papageorgopoulou is the owner of Kronos Yacht Agency, based in Rhodes with no less than 14 local offices dotted strategically throughout the country. This particular country is made up of 6,000 islands and islets, 227 inhabited. Most of the islands are in the Aegean Sea and divided into seven groups (north to south): The Northeastern Aegean Islands, The Sporades, Evia, Islands of Argosaronic, The Cyclades, The Dodecanese, Crete, The Ionian Sea has one island complex: The Ionian Islands. The islands of Gavdos (situated south of Crete), Elafonissos (in the Gulf of Laconia) and Trizonis (in the Gulf
of Corinth), do not form part of a group. ‘Rhodes has the oldest history of all the islands, is the largest of the Dodecanese, one of the largest in the Aegean and one of the most beautiful,’ suggests Katerina. ‘You must go for a wander through the medieval city, built by the Christian military order Knights Hospitaliers. It is one of the best preserved towns in Europe and has numerous fine Gothic and Ottoman buildings. Rarely does one have the chance to stroll into twenty-four centuries of history and countless previous centuries of human presence, all within medieval walls, which surround 58.37 hectares of land.’ She also
urges a trip to the Acropolis at Lindos. Mykonos and Santorini are favourites with most of her clients. At Santorini you visit the post-Minoan town of Akrotiri and the Museum of Thira.‘Visit the islands New and Old Kammeni and Thirasia. It is most definitely worth walking on the crater of the volcano, only 30 mins away from the port of New Kammeni’, adds Katerina. ‘Who doesn’t have something to say about Mykonos? she asks, ‘with its vast boundless blue waters and unforgettable moments?’ Mykonos is a barren island, full of golden beaches, crystal clear water and Mykonian architecture.

outhern Cross Blue Cruising is a gullet and bareboat charter company in Bodrum operating under a Turkish Tourism Charter License run and owned by Australian Dave Stanley and half Turkish half American, Dina Street. They have over 17 years of yachting and charter experience. Despite the success of the charter and brokerage business their main specialism is in timber work and they are keen to encourage yachts to winter and re-fit in Turkey; Says Dave, ‘It’s as good as anywhere in France
or Italy if not better, and half the price’. Turkey borders eight countries and is the place where east has always met west combining a kaleidoscope of people from all imaginable religions and backgrounds. Dave adds, ‘Turkey is an active member of NATO and we hope that it does not join the European Union, as we’d lose our tasty, unpasteurized local cheeses’. His advice to visiting yachts this year is, ‘If yachts are not EU flagged they must be careful where they pick up guests. If the pick up
and drop off is in Greece, they must leave Greek waters and make customs entry into a different port. We’ve had notice from customs police warning of fines and maybe even a little ‘lock up’ for the Captain’. Southern Cross Blue Cruising doesn’t pretend that Eastern delights can all be relished in just one visit so its top spot list includes: Ephesus, the Castle of Saint Peter, the Greek Island of Symi, the sunken city of Kekova, the ghost town of Kayaköy and the ancient site of Knidos.

he future we dreamed of as children surrounds us. The ability to pick up a portable telephone without wires and phone home from the middle of an ocean, when we want to instead of waiting for the Radio Officer to get a connection through a shore side radio station, is just one example. The Internet and the instant messaging ability afforded by e mail is now a way of life and accepted as a normal everyday method of communication. There is however, one concept we dreamed of as kids, that has, so far, eluded us. Despite everyone’s best attentions, the idea of transportation or of being beamed up, down or even sideways has never materialised. The closest we can currently come to such a goal is video conferencing of which Skype and Facetime are the most familiar brand names. These very real and easy to navigate software programmes

daddy build his own business called Superyacht Operating Systems. He says, “One of the issues that is very rarely highlighted in our industry is what we the Captains and crew have to give up in order to pursue a career in yachting. Family gatherings, birthdays, weddings, Christmas and funerals are just a few of these important events”
We know of one Captain who wears two watches with one set for the time zone of his home, the other on the local time of the yacht Skype and Facetime can go some part way to resolving some of these but not all of them. Clarke adds, “Being away from small children and having a Skype relationship was challenging at times. I knew it was time to go home when my 18 month old daughter picked up a Wiggles DVD, pointed at the picture on the front of the case and proceeded to tell Mummy quite insistently that the Blue Wiggle was Daddy.” Founded in 2003 and operating out of Luxembourg Skype is different from other VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) providers in that it operates on a peer-to-peer basis. This means that the program distributes the running workload across all users’ computers via background processing, instead of running off a traditional server. It, like Facetime, is free to use when communicating with another user of the same software. Originally funded by seed money from E Bay and other investors Skype was bought by Microsoft in 2011 for USD 8.5 billion and has now more than 45 million regular users worldwide. We know of one Captain who wears two watches with one set for the time zone of his home, the other on the local time of the yacht. No matter where in the world he is, he finds time at 7pm home time, to sit down and read his son a bedtime story. Using a camera that looks over his shoulder and another one in front of him, his son, on the other side of the world, gets to see Daddy read to him at the same time as following Daddy’s fingers as they trace words across the page. “You may think I am silly to go to such lengths,” he told us, “but I think it is so important that my son never forgets that I have the time for him at bedtime.” He laughs and adds, “It also gives my wife a half an hour break every day to sit down at the kitchen table with a glass of wine and her magazine!”
Touching words Captain Adam Kittel commands Whispering Angel, a yacht based in the Mediterranean year round. He has twin boys aged 9 who live in the UK. He told us,“I do get to see my family as much as possible even if that means that I fly to the UK at week-ends. During the season we are locked into the job and Skype becomes an integral way of life. When talking to my boys they are always interested as to where I am or where I am going and often say
‘Can we come?’ Having worked in the industry since I was 17, I have come to terms with the yachting/family question and so have my family. They understand that I am away making money to pay the bills, have holidays and buy the boys a Mars bar! You could say we have found a healthy balance although I always wish that I could spend more time at home.” Captain Paul Bickley commands the Benetti built Latitude. This popular charter yacht is kept very busy with a steady stream of clients from Fraser Yachts many of who are repeat charter guests eager to relive their earlier experiences. Being booked throughout the season with back to back charters can put a strain on family relationships especially when there is little opportunity for a day off between charters. Paul says, “During the earlier years of parenthood, my two daughters were less demanding of my time, but as the years tick by they are now more dependent on their Daddy for attention, advice and love. Jessica born 2000 and Olivia born 2004, are now very aware of the time they need from me and it does often make me question my future in yachting. Fortunately we are a Mediterranean based yacht, which provides a resemblance of normality during the winter months and I can resume my parental duties from October through until we start again in May. This has been a perquisite for any job I took since they were born. During the summer months our relationship consists of hurried phone calls, which are often interrupted by urgent matters onboard or during rushed school runs. I do make a habit of saying good night to the kids and helping with homework when needed.”
Running solo Caroline Bickley, his wife, told us: “Paul and I met whilst working on Yachts in 1997, and when I fell pregnant in 1999 we never anticipated the changes ahead. I needed to adjust to a life similar to that of a solo Mum, well for five months of the year anyway. Communication is a quick phone call to say goodnight to the kids and try and help with any last minute homework. Then later in the evening we try and catch up again once the kids have gone to bed. 14 years later we have put the hardest part behind us and the kids are becoming more independent, although they are more aware of the family time we need together. I take the girls away on holiday during the summer months, which is not always easy and often get curious looks from other families in the hotel. I guess this is the life we have chosen and we make the most of it but it does add to the saying absence makes the heart grow fonder. We are both definitely looking forward to our retirement years that’s for sure.” The couple’s daughters aged 10 and 13 know exactly what it is like to have a Skype Daddy. Jessica, the eldest and Olivia, the youngest were asked to pen a paragraph or two for ONBOARD. This is what Jessica had to say: “My Daddy has been working as a Captain since I was born. I know he works hard but we want him to come home more, we have never had a summer holiday with him ever and we always have ten weeks school holiday in July and August. We have two weeks with him in October and two weeks over Christmas. Mummy sometimes gets cross that he is not here to help with the house cleaning but she does like him coming home with lots of presents.” Olivia adds, “Daddy is very clever and I sometimes need help with my homework but we can only speak on the phone, which is very frustrating. He often misses important dates like my birthday, school shows and watching me grow up.”

CAPTAIN’S PROFILE
42 | SUMMER 2014 | ONBOARD
Captain Luke Humphries talks to Frances and Michael Howorth on board the Benetti built Galaxy What made you join the superyacht industry? I was in the Merchant Navy working on Australian flagged cargo ships. Engineering friends of mine had been working on board superyachts and had come back home explaining the industry, how it worked, where to start, who to talk to etc. My interest was piqued so I decided to give it a try. I got hired as a watch keeping officer because of my certificate and made a transatlantic crossing and I was hooked. What was your first superyacht and when did you join her? The 71m Amels Boadicea (now Reborn). I joined her in Fort Lauderdale. Which is your favourite Mediterranean port and why do you like it? Antibes, it’s my home port and it is always nice to go home. What is your favourite bar in a Mediterranean port and why is it special? Phi Beach in Sardinia. It’s an incredible place, right on the rocks overlooking the ocean with great music, tasty cocktails and amazing sunsets. Which is your favourite Mediterranean anchorage and why do you like it? A couple of secret spots at Ponza. Secluded, breath taking scenery and crystal clear water. The Mediterranean is said to be crowded with superyachts. Where do you think the best spot to get away from the others is? I think the Aeolian Islands are a good bet. If you could recommend a Mediterranean yacht service to another Captain what would it be? Riviera Yacht Support in Antibes. Ulf Sydbeck works hard to make a superyacht Captain’s job a little easier when the going gets rough and tasks start piling up. What is the most funny superyacht experience you can recall? I remember an incident that is funny now but was not at the time. We were in bad weather outside St Tropez with the boss on board while we waited for his guests to arrive. The girls were trying hard to serve lunch and the owner and guests also refused to admit defeat. All of a sudden a really big wave rolled in and the yacht rolled so badly that everything that was on the table slid menacingly towards the boss and landed completely in his lap. We were forced to ride out rough weather for the night and the following morning he and his guests flew home. What is your attitude to employing couples on board? My wife and I have worked together on board yachts for many years so I know what it takes to be a successful couple and also the value a couple adds, but you do need a balance. What’s the best idea you’ve ever copied from another captain? Standing Orders but I have to tell you that over the years since then they have evolved and become a better product than the one I copied.
What advice would you give to someone new entering the industry? Listen and learn and remember, the more you put in the more you will get out of the industry. What makes your yacht special? My crew and the rare breed of owner we all work for. He is a young European very much in touch with the world that surrounds him. How would you like to be remembered as a Captain? Gosh I am not old enough for that one! Ask me in another 10 years. What do your crew do really well? They are warm and sincere and are able to tune in quickly to what the owner and guests might need at any time. How do you think your crew talk about you behind your back? Well I hope! Hard but fair and fun! What would you like to do when you cease being in command of a superyacht? Maybe return to Australia and restart my merchant navy career by taking a job as a Marine Pilot.

WEAR IT Bermuda shorts Bermuda shorts originated with the British Army for wear in tropical and desert climates and are still worn by the Royal Navy. During the Second World War there was a shortage of clothing in Bermuda. The managers of two banks in Bermuda, were concerned that their male employees would not have suitable clothing to wear so they arranged for a local tailor to make two pairs of shorts, modelled on the British Army shorts. Initially these were made from a thick, itchy grey material and were worn with long socks and business shoes. Today’s versions have a multitude of colours and fabrics and are worn for either smart or casual wear by all ages and either sex. Bermuda cotton twill shorts Acne Studios www.mrporter.com €150

ADVENTURE
One man and his boat As seafaring missions go, Jason Lewis’s efforts must rank at the very pinnacle. Anthony Pearce met him for an exclusive interview
J
ason Lewis isn’t used to opulence. In February 2014, the globetrotting explorer headed to Antigua for an event on the stunning 180ft yacht that was used in the James Bond movie Skyfall. “The wind was blowing, and we were striking out from shore into blue water, on a big yacht, it was really pretty exhilarating,” he tells us. For Lewis, it was also really pretty different. The 46-year-old isn’t just unaccustomed to capacious decks and towering sails but engines, too. Flashback to October 2007 and Lewis, in his “tiny” 26ft long pedal boat, was about to make history in sailing into Greenwich. Completing his 4,833-day expedition, having travelled 46,505 miles, he became the first person to circumnavigate the globe by human power. Over 13 years away from home, Lewis survived malaria, broke both legs and fought off a crocodile as he pedaled across water and biked, rollerbladed and hiked across land. “When I finished the 13-year journey I was so sick of travelling,” he tells us. “I couldn’t even look at a map or a chart without feeling sick to my stomach, I was so tired of moving!” Now, several years on, he’s more comfortable with an expedition or two, but occasionally enjoys the luxury of the likes of Antigua. He’s just finished the second book of a trilogy documenting his adventures, The Expedition, The Seed Buried Deep, and is working on the third. Even that, he did the hard way. “I was offered quite a lot of money by a big-name publisher when I first finished the trip for the story, but with the proviso that someone else would write it, a ghost writer. They wanted it written in eight weeks ready for the Christmas market,” he says.
Cover story “The draft chapters, when they came through were so bad, because it had been so hastily written, I turned the money down. It was like a six-figure advance that would have really set me up nicely. I thought ‘to hell with this, I’m going to it my own. I’ve got to live by this story. I’ve put too much of my life into it’.” After 13 years, readjusting to society wasn’t easy. After his friend left the exhibition in 1999 he sailed alone, and upon returning to dry land, continued to live a nomadic existence, for a while kipping in his car in America, but returned to Dorset. He’s ready now, he tells us, to settle down. “The writing of the story was really my salvation,” he says. “It allowed me to get my head around the whole thing, to put the whole thing to bed.” The first question on our lips is not why or what made Lewis want to spend 13 years travelling across the globe, but how the adventure even came about. Had he always yearned to do something like it? Not at all. “It wasn’t my idea, first and foremost. It was my friend, Steve Smith, who I went to college with. It was really his burning ambition,” Lewis says. “When we were at university we used to go on these little weekend trips out of London, take a train to the middle of nowhere. It was a way for us to cut our teeth
46 SUMMER 2014 | ONBOARD
and find out what we were made of.” “He thought of this idea of using carbon-neutral means of transports, this big journey, and he phoned me up and asked if I wanted to join him. I had a window cleaning business at the time and was playing in bands in the evening. I had no background or prior experience to this. But I was bit bored of being in London, and he said it’ll take three or four years to do, and I thought that was a reasonable amount of time, and so I joined him. “Little did I realise that being on this expedition, in a way, suited me more than it suited him. He left and I carried on alone.” Our immediate reaction is that he has a background in the military, perhaps he’s a restless ex-SAS man searching for adventure? “It’s funny you should say that,” he laughs. “My dad was in the Army, and he always wanted me to follow in his footsteps. But I’ve always been turned off by that; it was the last thing I wanted. I had an authority problem as well, so I almost went the opposite direction, you know, playing in bands, and running my own little business.”
Lone ranger After Smith left, Lewis was sporadically joined along the trip by other explorers, who he says saved him from getting lonely, but at sea, he was often all alone. He missed his friend, but admitted the tiny boat, with its one bed, suddenly seemed spacious. “A big part of the problem of being alone on a small boat is that when you’re sleeping, the boat can be going anywhere. In the doldrums, where the water is running back eastwards towards Mexico, and I’m trying to get westwards, I would sleep and go backwards. A few hours of sleep and I was back where I started from the previous morning! This went on for days and days,” he says. “It was quite demoralising.” Lewis kayaked thousands of miles through the Indonesian archipelago from East Timor to Singapore and later covered 2,000 nautical miles with a friend, Sher Dhillon, crossing the Arabian Sea to Djibouti. The journey had more than its fair share of interruptions, though. He was arrested in Egypt on suspicion of spying and, after being released, was banned from him cycling in the country, meaning he had to conduct this leg of the journey by night. In Colorado, an 82-year-old drunk driver struck Lewis while he was rollerblading in Pueblo. He spent nine months recovering from two broken legs, then carried on. And he had his run-ins with nature too. After kayaking on the Great Barrier Reef, approaching the shore, Lewis says he had a strange feeling, as if he was being watched. “There were these two eyes and this snout following me.” Lewis describes the subsequent crocodile attack as “his worst nightmare” but escaped virtually unscathed, fighting it off with a paddle. It’s enough to put you off the seas for life. But, Lewis, we think you’ll agree, is made of sterner stuff.

THING Insurance policies do not automatically guarantee against all the bad things that can happen in your life as Claire Griffiths explains
I
nsurance policies act as a buffer between your sweet dreams and the devil at the bottom of the deep blue sea and all that lurks there threatening your assets (and there’s plenty of that). But it’s not enough. Do they really cover all the bases? Which insurance broker and company to choose is the question that needs asking by anyone sensible enough to carefully update and monitor their policies and protect their assets. ONBOARD magazine talks to brokers and insurers about issues superyacht clients might want to keep a careful eye on and who, how and why clients should choose for the best advice.
Pick n’mix Melanie is a Vice President within Lockton Private Clients, advising families and individuals on their insurance requirements and specific Risk Management Issues. She specialises in Yacht Insurance and leads Lockton’s presence in the UK within this class. She is concerned about the impact of price driven insurance which has led to clients being offered fewer insurance options by brokers that are often entirely and dangerously commoditised. She asks; ‘If you focus totally upon the price rather than the coverage, how can you be certain that you have purchased an effective insurance response to the safeguarding of your asset? And; ‘By utilising the services of a broker who only offers you
one or two product(s), can you be sure your assets are fully protected at the best price?’ At Lockton, the company is looking to resist this change by championing personal attention, bespoke solutions and excellent service delivery says Melanie, ‘Whilst many of the costs of Insurance cannot be (legally) escaped entirely, this is the right time to resist focusing on price and consider working more in a partnership with your Broker and Underwriters’. It’s a simple truth that price is a large consideration when buying insurance; but never be convinced that premium alone is a way to buy insurance. The purchase of your yacht was a complex transaction, in many ways getting the insurance right deserves the same level of attention.
Where’s the risk? Nigel Oakley a Senior Vice President, Head of Fixed and Yacht P&I Skuld Services Ltd deliberates as follows on potential predicaments: ‘When it comes to risk, and deciding whether to retain it on your own balance sheet or transfer it to someone else’s, (usually an insurer) there are several things that will direct the process: Whether it is compulsory because of regulatory (flag or port state requirements) or contractual (mortgagee ONBOARD | SUMMER 2014 | 51

THING requirements) and in these cases there may be specifications laid down that will restrict the choice of insurer available to the owner or whether it is optional because the risk would sit more comfortably on an insurer’s balance sheet. In the case of P&I it is becoming increasingly common that it is compulsory. Vessels over a certain size will need certificates from their flag state which will only be issued following receipt of a piece of paper from the P&I insurer (who may need to feature on a specific list of approved insurers). In certain ports, vessels may have to provide acceptable evidence of insurance cover before being allowed to enter or leave, and again there may be lists of insurers who are acceptable or approved. The recent Maritime Labour Convention requirements have made the P&I liability insurance even more important and port state control are likely to become more rigorous in their inspections than they have been so far. Delays arising from documentation issues are likely to be very irritating events and anything to minimise that risk would be good risk management practice. Superyachts are essentially very good insurance risks but they also carry very high insurance exposures and the limits for P&I cover can run up to USD 1,000,000,000 so whether insurance is compulsory or voluntary, once a decision has been made to transfer a risk to an insurer, more factors ought to be taken into account, preferably in this order: The quality of the security under consideration: The terms and conditions of the cover, the wording: does it do what you want it to do? Is it clear what the cover is for (day workers, towing of tenders, watersports or overside activities… not all insurance conditions are identical)?: The service provided, quality and speed of documentation, claims advice and handling and underwriting. Once happy with these, finally, the premium and deductibles applicable to the cover’.

Tailored for the superyacht market, the cover was designed by a specialist yacht team with the assistance of key players in the industry. Sensibly certified Thomas De Campou leads the Boat and Yacht Division of ANP assurances plaisances, a company that has been insuring marine business in one form or another since 1940. Based in Marseille with a presence in St Tropez, Genoa and Noumea (New Caledonia), the company’s success, explains Thomas, is based on a professional approach and competitive rates. It’s a small outfit of six staff;’ We offer a very personal service, with a rapid response and good guarantees and tariffs. I am always free and that is very important in these days of iphone, blackberry, skype etc, and our clients know that’. Thomas warns that this year yachts need to make sure their crew medical insurance is in order for commercial vessels. ‘It is now integrated into the MLC 2006 clause that came into force in August last year and I know of a handful of yachts that have been boarded already this year by the Douanes asking for this documentation’. Without the paperwork, heavy fines ensue. He also warns of the real danger of leaving a yacht unmaintained for too long allowing it to lose its classification at which point it becomes a hazard and a right-off.’ I had a client who bought a 45m in good condition at Cannes, but he abandoned it for too long and it fell into disrepair’. Martin Baum, Managing Director of Pantaenius Yacht Insurance believes the owner’s priority is often to protect their assets first (hull insurance) and then to think of their liability exposure. It is important to look at the liability side of the yachting sport

THING as the financial risk can be considerably higher than the value of the yacht. For example if a yacht has a paid crew on board, the owner can be held liable for the wellbeing of his crew. This does not always just apply to crew members with written employment contracts.
Liability check Baum warn that grey areas, which need to be addressed very carefully, arise wherever it comes to a mix of commercial usage and private usage of a yacht. May it be the paid crew, guests that participate in a regatta event or the business entertainment on a motor yacht with a paid music band on board or the exhibiting of a superyacht at a show. The third-party liability aspect is always worth a look as well as the varying flag state rules which affect many aspects of the crew protection. All of these flag state rules need to be aligned with the insurance set up, something that requires a depth of knowledge which is only very rarely found in the industry. Explains Martin Baum; ‘Often enough I have found that gaps in cover especially exist on the liability side of insurance, however, all the other insurances for a superyacht, such as hull and machinery, war, strike, accident, medical, oil pollution, etc. are equally complex and should not be underestimated’.
Price conscious Fastnet Marine Insurance Services International is a company of dedicated underwriting agents and brokers based in Southampton in the UK. It offers innovative products with competitive premiums on a wide range of yachts, policies backed by secure Insurers and straightforward dealing with a quick response. They provide a raft of quotes and are known for their independence and for recommending policies that correctly match requirements. The Director John Fraser believes one possible contentious issue is the insured value of a yacht. Often the market value and the owner’s estimate can differ as much as 20%, which can create a whole heap of financial and emotional hurt between the yacht owner and his insurer. With the market having been depressed for so many years, it is hard to put a value on bespoke superyachts. Over-insuring is a mistake, says John Fraser but it’s often a catch 22 when owners are loathe to devalue their custom built pride and joy but at the same time don’t want to forego a drop in premiums. Explains Fraser, ‘If a yacht is over insured and the insurance company can prove this they could void the policy claim. It has happened, but it is rare’. Previously insurance policies were drawn up without an agreed value (because replacing, for example, a Princess 45 with another Princess 45 was pretty plain sailing) but now in the days of custom built boats the value on the market could be anyone’s guess. The agreed yacht value must be drawn up in the policy and reviewed by insurer and owner regularly. R&Q is an AIM listed company specialising in a wide variety of insurance products and services. The Group was founded by Ken Randall and Alan Quilter in 1991. It has a team of over 350 insurance professionals based in the UK, US, Bermuda and Europe, with wide service capability in both the ‘live’ and ‘run-off’ markets. Director of Underwriting, Paul Miller, agrees that yacht valuation can be problematic so insurers need to monitor the market carefully, and check any advertised sale prices correspond to the policies.

SURF’S UP Alf Alderson travels from Scotland to Morocco in search of the pefect wave
56 | SUMMER 2014 | ONBOARD
A
s late summer fades into autumn the northern hemisphere surf season kicks off. Deep low pressure systems and hurricanes send powerful swells marching across the Atlantic to crash into shorelines all the way from northern Norway to Morocco. There are few stretches of the coastlines in between that haven’t been surfed these days, but which are the best? Here’s our selection of the prime locations for snagging that legendary ‘perfect wave’.
Thurso, Scotland Yes, it’s cold and the sun appears only sporadically, but the famous reef break at Thurso East is one of the best waves in Europe and has hosted international surf contests since the late 70s. Sitting as it does on Scotland’s north coast means the prevailing winds are offshore, holding up the waves to create steel grey barrels that streak above kelp covered sandstone slabs, so this is not a wave for beginners; however, there are plenty more mellow waves in the area (including a nice sandy beach break right in front of the town centre) for less accomplished wave riders.
Portrush, Northern Ireland There’s a great surf scene in the buzzing little town of Portrush, with fine beginner/intermediate waves breaking on the town’s main beach, and more challenging reef breaks both east and west along the spectacular Causeway Coast. It’s also worth taking time out from the surf to check out the nearby Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the equally famous Bushmills Distillery just outside town. Interestingly the waves here are often the same colour as whisky, although it’s as a result of peat-stained water running off the land rather than leakages from the distillery…
Southern Ireland ‘Southern Ireland’ may sound a bit vague, but there’s so much world class surf along the country’s west coast you could roll up pretty much anywhere and have a chance of scoring good waves. Popular spots include Bundoran and Easky in the north, Lahinch further south and Brandon Bay and Inch Reef towards the bottom end of the country. These spots offer a mix of everything from fun beach breaks to long, walling point breaks and challenging reefs, and if you really think you’re a hotshot you could take on big wave locations like Aileens beneath the 200-metre high cliffs of Moher, or the terrifying 20-metre monsters at Mullaghmore in Co.Sligo.
Watergate Bay, Cornwall Watergate Bay has some of the most consistent surf in Cornwall, and it’s usually less frenetic in the water here than at England’s self-styled ‘surf city’ of Newquay just a few miles to the south; but at the same time if you want to go and enjoy some après-surf action in the town you’re within easy reach of it. At low tide Watergate presents you with two miles of golden sand, so it’s easy to avoid the crowds if you’re prepared to walk a bit. Above the beach you’ll find a whole raft of top quality facilities, including Jamie Oliver’s Cornwall Fifteen restaurant and the surfer-friendly Watergate Bay Hotel where you can walk to and from your room in your wetsuit.
Hossegor, SW France The focal point of the French and European surf scene has shifted since the sixties from Biarritz to Hossegor, about thirtyminutes north along the Landes coastline. Here you’ll find an endless stretch of fine, golden sands backed by aromatic pine forests on one side and warm blue waves on the other. A deep submarine trench just offshore funnels swells into the beaches ONBOARD | SUMMER 2014 | 57
around Hossegor so that it’s rarely flat here for more than a few days at a time, and in late summer the water reaches 22oC, the sun shines hot on your back and a warm offshore wind creates perfectly shaped waves.
Zarautz, Northern Spain If you like a happening scene you’ll like Zarautz, which is one of Spain’s most popular surf spots. Playa de Zarautz near Bilbao has some of the most consistent surf in the Basque country, and unlike many surf beaches it has decent waves all the way through from high to low tide. If you want a slightly more mellow scene head to nearby Getaria, which is prettier and also has a good little beach break, especially at low tide. You should save some of your energy for Zarautz’s manic nightlife though, especially in September when the town holds the biggest of its two annual fiestas.
Peniche, Portugal Peniche is an hour’s drive north of Lisbon, so at weekends the surf can be pretty crowded, but it does at least have a great selection of breaks to spread people out a bit thanks to being a decent sized peninsula with north and south facing coastlines. In fact there are over twenty named surf spots along the 15km stretch either side of the town. The most renowned surf spot is the world famous Supertubos, a fast, heavy and very hollow beach break that often snaps boards (and sometimes surfers) but there are easier options too, such as Cantinho da Baia.
Italy Italy isn’t the first place that comes to mind when you think of surfing, but when you do get waves here it’s pretty near perfect with warm water, hot sunshine, a typical Italian hubbub in the water and great food and wine when you’re back onshore. The focal points of the Italian surf scene are the Ligurian and Tuscan coastlines in the north, the attractive town of Viareggio in particular; this isn’t surprising given the fact that it often has clean, overhead waves, especially in autumn and winter. But at the other end of the country the warm, sunny surf of Sardinia is also becoming increasingly popular.
Morocco Probably the most exotic cultural surf experience you can get without taking a long haul flight, Morocco is famed for its endless right-hand point breaks. The water isn’t as warm as you might expect this far south (you’ll still need a thin wetsuit) but that’s a small price to pay for the opportunity to ride waves that are so long your legs start to ache. Taghazout to the north of Agadir is the place to head for. Check out Surf Maroc (www.surfmaroc.com) for inside information on the waves, or if you want to explore head south to the country’s long, empty wave washed desert coastline.
Canaries Often described as ‘Europe’s answer to Hawaii’ (which doesn’t make sense since they’re off the African coast…) all of the Canary islands have surf, but Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the two that get most of the attention. These volcanic isles rise straight up out of the Atlantic to block swells rolling down from the north, and the reef breaks along their north coasts are consequently heavy and challenging (wipeouts often involve bouncing off solidified lava so are not recommended). However, there are more forgiving beach breaks too, such as Famara on Lanzarote and Playa del Cotillo on Fuerteventura.

ADVERTORIAL
Interior motives Over the past twenty years, Aquaria have supplied furnishings and accessories to some of the world’s most prestigious yachts
T
he path to extraordinary accomplishments lies in ‘marginal gains’; the cumulative improvement of many small elements to produce astonishing results. It‘s no secret amongst business leaders, artists, athletes, musicians and engineers, because it is the difference between an entrepreneur and a captain of industry, or an athlete and a world champion, a supporting dancer and a prime ballerina, or a painting and a masterpiece. Some call it the final five percent, an effort to go “that little bit further”, the final touch or even that je ne sais quoi...for Aquaria, this is fundamental. Through years of experience in yacht interior fulfilment on some of the world‘s most iconic vessels, Aquaria understand the importance of the smallest details. All the components supplied by the artisan craftsmen are conversation pieces in their own right, yet subtly and seamlessly blend together to create a harmonious environment.
Bien-être Aquaria have invested significant time and resources in the constant search for the finest and most suitable materials and furnishings. From the crispest bed linens, the finest glassware and softest towels, to a bespoke on board humidor and even the belt buckle of the crew‘s uniform. A trusted team of creative and innovative artisans are in place to ensure your yacht’s furnishings and accessories have their own story to tell. From exclusive concepts to bespoke customisation, Aquaria is committed to delivering designs to enhance your on board experience. The result is always a yacht that reflects the unique individual. “Our mission is to bring the finest quality and most distinguished companies from around the world to the Middle East yacht industry. What we provide is expertise, technical and aesthetic know-how to the finishing touches of a yacht. These final details are indispensable and the most important elements to delivering the dream project.” says Demi Profi, Managing Director of Aquaria.
Pursuit of perfection Aquaria have carefully assembled a range of the finest products from Venice, Florence, Bruges, Nantes and Monaco; bed linens, the softest quick dry towels, crystal glasses, silverware, tableware, bespoke on board cigar humidors, cashmere throws, and other objets d’art. With Aquaria’s team of stylists and interior designers, the research is constant and never ending. Aquaria symbolises a new era in yachting elegance, comfort, unparalleled reliability and client service. Gulf Craft have recently collaborated with Aquaria to supply a new Majesty 135. “We are excited to work with industry leaders like Gulf Craft and honoured that they have chosen Aquaria to deliver the final touch to an impressive yacht like the Majesty 135,” says Demi. The Aquaria team believes that your yacht should be an extension of your own home, a moving piece of art, blending beauty, comfort and aesthetics in a harmonious environment. MATTERS Yacht managers provide a valuable service allowing captains and crew to focus on the job in hand. Words: Frances and Michael Howorth
A
s the size, number and complexity of yachts has increased over the past twenty years, so new industries have grown up to service them and perhaps the newest of these are Yacht Managers. Where there were once just a few shore-based individuals assisting captains to run their large yacht there are now companies specialising in every conceivable service for the yacht, the crew and the owner. At every stage of building, buying, designing, refitting and selling a superyacht there is now a specialist offering to manage the process. There are project managers, construction managers, design managers, safety managers and of course, financial managers each seemingly set on helping an owner get the most out of his yacht. What do they achieve? Do they perform and could super yachting exist just as well without them? The sceptic would say that yacht management was born from the desire on the part of the yacht broker to stay very much in touch with the owner during that tricky period between when he takes delivery of his yacht until such time as he decides that he wants to upgrade to a larger yacht or otherwise dispose of
his current vessel. That way he was sure to be on hand when he was needed to become involved in yet further commission earning revenue. Others who are slightly better advised would suggest it is because the process of looking after the yacht as a financial investment became so great that specialist advice was called for by the owner in much the same way he called the stockbroker to manage his share portfolio. Either which way, the yacht broker in the guise of manager and advisor is on hand to guide the owner through every step of the process. There is no doubt that the increase in the popularity of chartering and the advent of regulations such as ISM (International Safety Management) and ISPS (International Ship and Port Safety) also played timely into the hands of the would-be hand holders and so the career path of yacht manager was formed. At around the same time as this was happening the MCA began to take interest in standards of yacht construction and manning, new qualifications for crew came into force and gradually as the face of yachting changed for ever and adopted a more sombre and professional level the managers role rose to the fore. Management
MATTERS First to enter the fray were the large brokerage houses, shortly followed by the boutique managers, each claiming that they were untainted by the filthy lucre of sales commission. A brief professional skirmish ensued but gradually the whole thing settled down to the point where today each type and style of yacht manager seems to happily coexist with the other as they strive to satisfy every whim the yacht owner has.
Well connected Many yacht managers emerged from the commercial side of the shipping industry claiming that they knew what was needed and adopted practices seen in the international merchant marine companies. Others, from a more solid background in yachting, opened up shop and from both groups came several well connected and highly experienced captains who equally brought professionalism to the newly hatching management industry. At first, captains of large yachts saw this as interference and, it has to be said, some of the older and more experienced captains still do. However as yachts became larger, so there were others who quickly latched onto the breast milk concept and saw management as an aide to their careers and an easing of their stress levels. There are those in the industry who believe it is the smaller yachts with younger, less experienced captains that need, and should take full advantage of yacht managers and the guidance they offer believing that when they are senior enough to get a larger yacht they will no longer need such tutoring. There are however equal numbers of captains sailing aboard large complex yachts who have good reason to be happy that there is professional back up in the form of a management company to fall back on when it hits the fan. Many captains report that yacht managers provide a vital link through which he operates the yacht. It is they, he says, who pay the large invoices once he has approved them, it is they that pay crew salaries, instigate insurances and look after the financial implications of running the yacht on behalf of the owner. Because they are not specialist in yacht operations the captain also works with a specialist yacht manager who undertakes ISM and ISPS work as well as dealing with all flag and classification issues. West speaks well of his relationship with both managers and praises them for not interfering too much, allowing him to get on with his job as the yacht’s Master. Equally because he knows they are there, he values their presence so that if and when they are needed they are no more than a telephone call away. Other captains are not so generous with their comments about managers and one has told ONBOARD Magazine “they constantly seek to demonstrate to my owner their worth and so frequently create management mountains out of minor molehills that could, if I had been allowed to deal with them, have been sorted out by me in half the time and less than half the cost.” One comment on the subject came from a captain when we asked if he had ever been helped out of a bad situation with assistance from yacht managers ashore.“Yes” he said, “but we only got into that state because of their interference in the first place, but they claimed the credit for averting the disaster and the boss was happy as a result.” But what of the managers themselves? Captain Adrian McCourt the Managing Director Watkins Marine Services in London manages amongst others, the superyacht Luna. He believes yacht

MATTERS management is becoming more competitive, and securing good manning by employing competent crew is becoming even more difficult, but otherwise, it is like any other kind of management. It should improve and embrace change. This typifies the organisation he runs which comes from a commercial shipping background where he is an expert in Risk Assessment. McCourt believes that yacht management has developed over the years from a simple, add on by brokerage houses, into a big business for a number of reasons including: increased legislation; more sophisticated vessels; a more competitive manning market; and ISM requiring increased shore support. He feels “Owners are becoming more discerning and wanting to limit their various liabilities in an increasingly litigious environment. The advantage to the Owner is one of (one hopes) protection, reliability, compliance, reduced liability, improved residual value and financial accountability.”
Owners are becoming more discerning and wanting to limit their various liabilities in an increasingly litigious environment “No two kinds of service are the same,” he said “and we tailor them to meet the client’s needs and expectations, but the range goes from ISM support to full management, including charter. On the subject of fees he believes that around £100,000 pa, quoted by others, are on the low side adding that his own fee structure is competitive and confidential “but are calculated based on the client’s needs and our need to provide a quality service and return income to our capital providers. We don’t enter bidding wars. If a competitor wants to manage a boat as a loss leader, we won’t try and match that, but in general terms, an Owner will get what he/she pays for. Having said we would reduce management fees if party to brokerage and similarly, and would provide a reduced brokerage rate if involved in management.”

Quality control When we asked him whether yacht management offers value for money or is it a crafty way of a brokerage house staying in close contact with an owner between his buying and subsequently selling his yacht his answer was disarmingly honest “Yes to both” he said, adding, “sadly. Depending on the management company of course.” When talking about his involvement in crewing issues he is quite clear about the need to become so, stating, “We see ourselves as the last quality controller to see the crew before the charterer does. If an owner or charterer has to tell us that one of our crew is not suitable, we should ask ourselves the question, how did we not see this first? We want retention of quality staff, competent, trained, motivated and happy. We see that as a vital part of the manager’s role.” Sea-Alliance Group Yacht Management based in Gibraltar provide hands-on management and detailed knowledge of every boat and its daily operation combined with the expertise and experience to allow clients to really enjoy ownership of their yacht. MATTERS Director Roy Klajman told us “With our global network of agents and representatives to deal with every aspect of the yacht’s systems, logistics, suppliers, route planning, crew recruitment and supervision, and finance, we take care of all the associated worries and headaches which can often exasperate an owner.” Sea Alliance offers a 24/7 service is provided for private or commercial yachts of 5-50 metres and valuable advice and assistance is guaranteed from a highly skilled team including commercial skippers, project managers, financial experts and experienced yacht crew who understand the needs of the yacht owner.
We are now looking at owners who want to get value for money without compromising service and quality Nick Sevier Director of Titan Fleet Management believes that the focus in todays yacht management circles is to run the yacht in a very similar way that owners run their businesses. He said, “I think the days of extravagant yachting are over and we are now looking at owners who want to get value for money without compromising service and quality. To match these expectations, we focus on delivering this ‘value for money’ approach. In the same way professional financial institutions aim to protect their clients’ assets, we apply integrity, diligence and professionalism to the safeguarding and daily running of our vessels. Annex 2 of the revised Large Yacht Code (LY3) stipulates that all Red Ensign flagged commercial yachts over 24 metres and under 500gt should have a safety management system onboard. The Mini ISM is a version of the International Safety Management (ISM) code; meets that legal requirement and a system of good practice within yachting. Mini ISM comprises of procedures and checklists for routine, safety and emergency situations as they apply to a particular vessel.
On course The yacht management division of Bluewater in Antibes has created a proven Mini-ISM system, which they adapt to the specific requirements of each yacht at a reasonable price. They told us, “Compliance with ISM and ISPS is obligatory for every commercial vessel of 500gt or more. ISM and ISPS codes provide an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships, prevention of pollution and the security of the ship. Bluewater teaches ISM and ISPS courses at their Training Centre in Antibesoffering a Safety and Security package to maintain the vessels value and ensure its legality for a low monthly fee. Working with the Captain and crew, the company will produce customised manuals that include: • Safety Management Manuals • SOLAS Training Manual • SOLAS Fire Manual • SOPEP Plans • Towing Manual • Ship Security Plan • In addition they provide a 24 hour Designated Person Ashore (DPA) and Company Security Officer
Monoeci Based in Monaco and headed by Janet Xanthopoulos, Monoeci Management is well placed to advise and assist yacht owners, captains and brokers, during the whole ownership process, starting from the purchase or construction, through to the sale. With a wide spectrum of tailored services, their professional services go beyond yacht registration and include ownership structuring that could provide beneficial VAT planning and tax mitigation. Monoeci are also able to arrange for yacht finance and insurance, and will take care of any project requirements in addition to the day-to-day maintenance and administration of the yacht and her crew. For more details Tel: +377 (0) 97 97 21 41 or visit www.monoeci.com Knox House Marine Management Limited (KHM) is part of the Knox group of companies, which includes Knox House Marine & Aviation Limited and Knox House Trust Limited. They seek to remove the administration burden from owners and captains, including not only yacht management but also fiduciary services. They offer Captains access to services through a dedicated single point of contact that will save them time and expense. Unlike many of the larger management houses, they provide a dedicated point of contact is available 7 days a week. “Our ultimate aim is to save an owner money by running his yacht professionally,” said Tim Carbury. He added “During a recent purchase and refit, our management input reduced an annual operating budget down from 2 million Euros to 1.6 million Euros with no corners cut on the safety and maintenance of the vessel.” Many Yacht Managers are now offering Payroll Services using MCA approved contracts of employment. They get around National insurance issues by setting up specialised payroll services in the Channel Islands and other administrations to provide offshore crew management and administration services to owners. Many use cost saving schemes such as these to provide offshore crew employment and payroll services, therefore eliminating any potential administration costs and Social Security contributions that may be due by the employee and the employer. This significantly contributes to operational savings in the employment of crew on behalf of the owner but few Managers are willing to talk to us about how these services help or protect the crew they pay.

Cowe buoys Roll up, roll up. Sue Pelling takes a look at the biggest regatta on earth
A
berdeen Asset Management Cowes Week (2-9 August) is not only one of the longest running and successful sporting events in the UK, but is also the world’s largest regatta of its kind, often attracting up to 1,000 entries and 100,000 plus visitors. Although it has evolved hugely over the past 188 years, there are still aspects that remain unchanged, which gives the regatta its unique identity. Traditionally taking place after Glorious Goodwood and before the Glorious Twelfth (the first day of the Grouse shooting season) in late July/ early August every year (excluding war years) since 1826, historically Cowes Week became a highlight of the British sporting summer season with British and foreign royalty, the nobility, and rich and famous often using the event to entertain their guests. In that respect, nothing has really changed. Sailing is arguably the only sport in the world where it’s possible, regardless of age and ability, to line up at the start with the world’s ‘Formula 1’ racers, and Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is certainly no exception. It may be a fun regatta with a Champagne corkpopping, cocktail party reputation but the highly competitive, professionally-run race format is the reason why so many visiting world class sailors turn up year after year to compete for some of the most treasured silverware including King George VI’s Britannia Cup, and the New York Yacht Club Challenge Cup.
Classes and racing format With potentially over 1,000 boats taking part and 40 different classes to contend with, the organisers, Cowes Combined Clubs, split the racing into Black and White groups – smaller open day boats (White), larger yachts with cabins (Black). On the water highlights in 2014 include the inaugural European championship for the J/111 class, which takes place on the first four days of the regatta. There is also a Big Boat mini-series likely to take place for competitors preparing for the start of the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race the following week (10 August start). The biggest class to watch out for, in terms of number of entries, however, is the classic X One-Design class with its distinct X insignia on the sail. This local one-design celebrated its centenary in 2011 and managed to top the record books with 145 entries. Although entries probably won’t exceed 80 this year, competition is intense, which makes it one of the most spectacular classes to watch, particularly on the start line. 70 | SUMMER 2014 | ONBOARD
Other interesting local one-designs to watch out for are Solent Sunbeams (V sail insignia) that celebrated its 90th anniversary last year, and the Victory class (Z sail insignia), which is 80 this year. The Victory fleet, which resides in Portsmouth, just across The Solent, is using Cowes Week as a base in which to celebrate its 80 years. Over 20 boats are expected including the oldest boat (Z6, pre war) and the latest glass fibre boat (hopefully Z80 in the class’s 80th year). Gareth Penn, Class Captain, commented: “The organisers have been fantastic in helping make this a really great 80th celebration and we have the privilege of the first start of the day from the Royal Yacht Squadron line on the opening Monday. “Also, to help showcase our class to spectators, we are organising racing off the Green on Wednesday evening where celebrities are being invited to take part.” Because of the complexity of starting up to 1,000 boats, there is, not surprisingly, only one race per day in most classes. The racing start sequence, in five-minute intervals, begins at approximately 10.00 each day, split between the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) line at the mouth of the River Medina (the castle-looking building on the right as you approach Cowes) and a committee boat line slightly further offshore or to the east. This means it’s possible to see a lot of the start action from the shore either at the RYS, from The Green (in front of the Esplanade) or The Parade. Once racing starts however, being on the water is the best way of following the racing. Depending on the weather/ tidal conditions and length of courses set boats finish from 1400 onwards.
On shore Because there is such a vibrant, festive atmosphere on shore, wandering around Cowes is hugely enjoyable, and pubs, clubs and marina bars are always packed with entertainment and social events after racing. There are three main social hubs in Cowes during the week – Marine Parade (near the RYS), Cowes Yacht Haven in the centre, and Shepherd’s Wharf, slightly further up river. These are connected via the main High Street, which runs parallel with the River Medina. The final Friday (8 August) is traditionally one of the biggest party nights of the week with thousands turning up for the Red Arrows display and the grand Aberdeen Asset Management firework extravaganza.

For the Shrimp 3/4 cup finely diced zucchini 3/4 cup finely diced cucumber 1/2 cup finely diced red pepper 1/2 cup finely diced celery 1/2 cup finely diced carrots 3 1/2 tbps Citronette dressing
For the Ginger Gelato 2 1/4 cups milk 1 cup plus 2 tbps heavy cream 1 vanilla bean 5.3 oz ginger, peeled and sliced 5 egg yolks 1/2 cup sugar
1. Make the citronette: Whisk all the ingredients together well. 2. Start the Red Shrimp Carpaccio: Combine the zucchini, cucumber, bell pepper, celery, and carrots, toss with the Citronette Dressing, and place in the refrigerator to marinate overnight.
Alla Palanca This bar-trattoria on the Giudecca is on Venice’s southern island. It retains the character of a neighbourhood bar even when it’s packed with hungry diners, who eat lunch (no dinner is available) on tables in the brightly coloured back room or on one of the highly sought after al fresco waterfront tables overlooking the canal. They don’t take bookings, so come by 12.30pm or be prepared to wait. Around aperitivo time you can stop by for a plate of cicheti (bar snacks) and a glass of wine. 3. Make the ginger gelato: Mix all the ingredients and cook for 9 minutes in a Thermomix at 85°C/185ºF, then freeze and Pacotize as needed. If the mixture is too grainy, add 2 to 3 tablespoons water and Pacotize again. Alternatively, cook the gelato over low heat, stirring frequently and being careful to scrape the bottom of the pan, until a temperature of 85°C/185°F is reached on a candy thermometer; remove from heat, strain, and cool to room temperature, whisking continuously over a bowl of ice. Place in the freezer. Remove the mixture when the edges start to freeze and churn vigorously with a fork, spoon or electric hand mixer to break up the frozen parts. Place back in the freezer. Repeat this process 2-3 times until set. 4. To serve, peel the shrimp, remove and discard the black vein, then slice them lengthwise very thinly. Arrange the marinated vegetables in a circle in the middle of each plate; dust the surface with a little salt and pepper. Arrange the slices of shrimp over the vegetables to form a spiral, and dress with olive oil, Maldon salt flakes, and freshly ground black pepper. Serve with a quenelle of ginger gelato and garnish with watercress.

FOOD SNIPPETS The latest food trends and snippets for you to try over the summer months
DID YOU KNOW?
The ratio of white meat to brown in crabs depends on their gender. Males (cocks) generally have bigger claws but slightly smaller bodies than females (hens). You get more white meat from the males, and more brown from the females.
The lowdown on...
COBNUTS What are they? A variety of hazelnut traditionally grown in Kent, England where they were introduced around 1830.
What do they look like? Fresh cobnuts come wrapped in green husks and look like slim hazelnuts.
How do they taste? Fresh nuts are refreshing, almost milky, reminiscent of coconut water. When dry, they turn nuttier and sweeter, almost chocolatey.
And in cuisine? Fresh nuts can be blended into watercress or pea soup, or chopped and sprinkled over creamy trifles and fools. Dried nuts are great ground like almonds. Use in stuffings or toasted and tossed in a salad with stilton and pear slices.
On Trend... New cooking oils Regional extra virgin olive oil This is an extra-virgin olive oil with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. It should be cold-pressed and preferably from a single estate. For real food finesse, use with recipes from the same region. A rich, peppery Tuscan olive oil works well with a tagliata steak. For salads or grilled seafood, try a gentle, fruity Provencal oil.
Extra virgin cold pressed rapeseed oil Beautifully yellow rapeseeds are used to make standard vegetable oil as well as this delicate, purer version, which is now the go to choice for many top chefs. The best stuff has a nutty, asparagus-like flavour. Use it as you would extra-virgin olive oil, for dressings, drizzling, gentle frying or mayonnaise.
Virgin coconut oil With its mild nutty flavour and hint of the tropics, coconut oil is excellent used for frying fish in Caribbean, African or Asian recipes, or for baking (it’s great in carrot cakes). Though coconut oil is high in saturated fat, there’s evidence to suggest it’s ‘good’ sat fat, which can help cholesterol levels. As with all fats, use it in moderation and stick to the virgin oil, which is unrefined. ONBOARD | SUMMER 2014 | 77

IN THE MIX
Make mine a Mojito Amit Sood of Shaker BarSchool looks at the history of the Mojito and muddles the definitive version
I
remember the first time I discovered a Mojito. It was in the early part of the year 2000. I was living and working in Sydney and a colleague was talking about this new drink they had discovered whilst working at one of our sister bars. I went to the bar to check it out and was pleasantly surprised by what I experienced. At that point in time, I like most bartenders and consumers had never come across the soon to be popular combination of Rum, lime, mint, sugar and soda.
Rum deal Fast forward to 2014; the world has very much warmed to Rum again. What do we have to thank for this? Well I believe that the reinvigoration of the category has been in part down to the Mojito’s success as a cocktail. I started working back in London in February 2001 as a bartender in the heart of the West End at Navajo Joe; a bar with a South West / Latin American feel and focused on Tequila, Rum and Bourbon. We were one of a handful of bars that offered Mojitos at the time. We sold a lot and people could not get enough. We prepped boxes of limes daily and handled a lot of mint. At one point we had five different mojitos on the menu! The Mojito was far from main stream at this point, and unlike now, the packaged drink market and mainstream managed bar groups were still far from embracing and piggy backing off the niche success of this.
So to have the mojito firmly cemented in your cocktail repertoire is a must for any aspiring bartender, practice and perfect your recipe to get the perfect balance, try out various rums to see the difference in flavours or add some fresh fruit to the mix to give a refreshing new twist to this classic drink. Once perfected the Mojito will be your new best friend! Overall I don’t see the Mojito slowing down in terms of its global appeal. Cuba blessed us with one of its greatest liquid gifts and I for one thank them for that. Shaker BarSchool courses are available through bluewater yachting.
MOJITO RECIPE
GLASS
4 lime wedges 10-15ml sugar syrup 8–16 large mint leaves Crushed ice 50ml Rum Soda water
12 oz Collins
METHOD Muddle, Build & Churn
The key part about the Mojito in my opinion was making people aware that it was a Rum based drink. On the whole the Rum based cocktails of the time were poor Tiki classics that had been done a great dis-service; bad Pina Coladas and terrible Mai Tais! The Mojito helped the Rum market to prosper. Brands such as Appleton used the serve as a key driver for their strategic attack on the aged Rum market when they began an assault with Appleton VX in 2003. Rum, as we know now is diverse and broad in its styles and the Mojito helped to show this off.
Making a mint We are now generally more aware that the drink suits the lighter bodied and younger aged Rums, but back then it was easy to cross or to upsell to different Rums in the drink, especially older expressions. This was part of the appeal as the drink grew in popularity. Have your Mojito your way or the way your Bartenders recommended it. I personally remember the excitement as El Dorado launched its 3 year old in 2008, and the way the industry and the consumer reacted to its taste in drinks. It is my personal favourite for a Mojito and Daiquiri as I feel it just balances against all the other flavours really well. In 2012 the Mojito was the most popular Cocktail ordered in high end and mainstream U.K on-trade. This data was published by First Drinks in their annual Market Report. Available from high street chains through to high end establishments. Consumers know and love the mojito, it’s so popular even bars that don’t list it on the menu get constant requests for the minty libation!
Add the lime and sugar to a Collins glass and muddle with a muddler. Add the mint leaves and place the flat-end of the bar spoon in the glass. Fill the glass with crushed ice and pour in the rum.
Rapidly raise and lower the spoon to thoroughly mix the drink, and then top with soda. Garnish with a sprig of mint, rubbing the leaves before serving to release the bouquet.

THE CORKER Pink wines are on a roll at the moment as Jamie Goode points out and rosé is actually becoming trendy again
I
n France, rosé wine consumption has increased year on year for a couple of decades now, and since 1990 has tripled. Pink wine sales now represent a remarkable 30% of total wine consumption in France. Globally, there’s been a 15% increase in rosé wine drinking over the last decade. In the UK, for example, rosé represented just 2.7% of supermarket wine sales in 2000; it’s now 11%. It looks like this growth could continue, too.
pink or pale salmon pink coloured rosés, which are quite dry. This has been the secret to their success: a short maceration followed by fermentation to dryness makes quite elegant and visually appealing wines which match well with food. Do not underestimate the importance of the colour of rosé: we taste with our eyes, and the colour makes suggestions to us as to what sort of fruit characters to expect from the wine.
Of all the world’s winegrowing regions, one can claim to be rosé capital of the world: Provence. Provence has a sizeable 26 000 hectares of vineyards spread across three departments (Var, Bouches du Rhône and Alpes-Maritimes), and makes over 160 million bottles in an average vintage. The region has 600 wineries, 40 of which are cooperatives. And, amazingly, rosé accounts for 89% of overall production, which is far, far higher than you’d find in any other wine region. Provence is France’s leading region for the production of AOP (Appellation d’Origine Protégée, which used to be known as AOC) rosé wines, accounting for 40% of the total. Altogether, Provence accounts for 5.6% of the planet’s total rosé wine production.
Premium pinks
The pink wine category is a broad one. At one pole we have inexpensive, sweet, slightly fizzy wines that resemble alcopops more than serious wines. At the other pole we have fine, gastronomic expressions of rosé of the sort that Provence excels at. But while Provence makes a lot of very good rosé, most of it is drunk in France (84%), with 40% being drunk in the region itself. After all, it is a wine that is superbly adapted to its environment. Exports are growing, though. They rose 15% in the last year, and demand from the largest export market, the USA, leaped by 40% over the same period.
Côtes of many colours Some more facts and figures. There are three main appellations in Provence. First we have Côtes de Provence, which includes more specific locations such as Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire, Côtes de Provence Fréjus and Côtes de Provence La Londe. Then we have Coteaux d’Aix en Provence and Coteaux Varois en Provence. The climate is sunny (2700–2900 h of sunshine per year) and the growing season can be very hot, although variations in landscape and altitude can mitigate this heat, as can the mistral. It rarely rains during the summer here, so the disease pressure is low. The grape varieties used to make Provençal rosé are predominantly the red grapes Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon, but occasionally white grape Rolle (aka Vermentino) is used as well. Rosé is made by allowing the crushed grapes a short period of skin contact before pressing out the juice and fermenting it. The duration of this skin contact determines how much colour the final wine will have. The trademark Provençal style is for pale 82 | SUMMER 2014 | ONBOARD
The big story with Provence rosé is the emergence of superpremium rosés demanding to be taken more seriously. In the past, pricing of Provence rosé has been quite flat: they aren’t terribly cheap, but they hit a price ceiling and don’t become expensive, either. This is beginning to change. The first super-premium rosé was produced by Domaines Ott. With their distinctively shaped bottles, the quartet of rosés made by Ott (Château Romassan, Château de Selle, Clos Mireille and Les Domaniers) are considerably more expensive than most of their peers at over €20 a bottle. And now we have two notable newcomers who are aiming even higher. The first is Miraval, which is owned by superstars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. They leased the Miraval property, in the village of Correns, as a summer home in 2008, then purchased it in 2012, taking control of the vineyards and making their own wine under this existing label. To do this they enlisted the help of Marc Perrin of top Rhône estate Chateau de Beaucastel. The second is the world’s most ambitious rosé of all, the Garrus from Sacha Lichine, who acquired his property, Château d’Esclans, in 2006. It’s located on an elevated site near the city of Frejus, and has 44 hectares of vineyards out of a total of 267 ha. The oldest vines here are 90 years old. From the estate vineyards, Lichine is making a range of three high-end rosé wines, helped by consultant enologist Patrick Léon. The Château wine is pretty impressive, but is trumped by the fabulous Les Clans cuvée, made the same way as a great white Burgundy, in barrels. And then there’s the world’s priciest rosé, the Garrus, which, like the Les Clans, is made like a fine white Burgundy in barrel, but which comes from selected old plots. It’s a superb wine demonstrating that rosé can be very serious, but it comes at a price of almost €100 a bottle. For those who want star quality but without the price tag, Lichine’s negociant wine, Whispering Angel, is beautifully packaged and delivers some sophisticated flavours. Expect to see more of these luxury pink cuvées emerge, because they are selling. But the strength of Provence lies in its ability to produce top quality, pale-coloured dry rosés, with a remarkable degree of consistency, at good prices. The pink revolution continues, and Provence is at the heart of it.

ADVERTORIAL
Stay connected Sean Farrell discusses the evolution of VSAT and highlights the the vital points to look at upon installation
V
SAT started with C band systems [4 to 8GHZ] back in the early 1980s and offer a wider footprint with some covering entire continents and oceans. These wide footprints come at a cost and that cost is size. Typically, C band antenna systems are in the 2.5 to 3.5 metre range and that’s a lot of real estate on a yacht. In 1985 Ku Band VSAT [12 to 18GHZ] became available with much smaller antenna systems 1.0 to 1.5 metre and in the past few years even smaller antennas in the 60cm range. Overall, almost all maritime VSAT systems are in the 1.0 to 1.5 metre range currently.
buttons on the antenna controller. This is available on most of the newer VSAT antenna systems and modems.
VSAT has jumped to the forefront of equipment/service to have onboard faster than any other of the entertainment devices found onboard due to the information age we live in now. Charters, crew and owners all want VSAT above anything else. With so much emphasis on this it’s important to know the equipment and systems available.
Location
Modems Modems need to be multi‐platform [DVB‐S2 & TDMA] to cover satellite reception globally. Getting locked into a satellite provider’s custom brand name modem may work for you in certain areas and not in other regions of the world. Having a modem that’s not locked to one provider is best. There you will be free to use other provider’s signals when and if the time comes. Also on your list is ABS or Automatic Beam Switching. It’s also a good idea to have a backup spare modem in case of failure.
VoIP Voice over Internet Protocol via VSAT is a big part of your VSAT system. Besides saving money from mobile roaming costs and satellite telephone providers charging outrageous amounts to make calls. VoIP can be almost any local telephone you want now. The yacht can be sitting on the hook at the Great Barrier Reef with a local France telephone number.
The number one thing with VSAT is where the above deck antenna is mounted. VSAT need line of sight to the satellite meaning your VSAT won’t work if there is anything in its way. Even the slightest blockage from a radar mast or stack will degrade the signal. Also S band radar beams can have an effect because the S band radar frequency [2 to 4GHz] falls into the L band frequency [1 to 2 GHz] the LNB in the VSAT antenna is sending down to the modem.
Service Providers Pick a provider that knows the importance of owners or charters onboard and not some generic call centre. We all know what it’s like to have issues with any equipment when the owner is onboard. Pick a provider who knows who you are and what needs to be done to correct any issues as soon as you call.
ABS Automatic Beam Switching allows you to travel across multiple satellites without changing option files in the modem or pressing

FUEL FOR THOUGHT
I
n today’s modern world there is still a good deal to be gained from old fashioned ship’s husbandry and never more so when it comes to the care and attention to the yacht’s bunkers which are after all, her very lifeblood. Engines, lovingly polished and serviced by the yacht’s engineers, demand high quality, clean fuel to power the vessel. With all the stresses that fill the dayto-day running of a superyacht, the last thing crew need worry about is problems with fuel. Without a properly functioning and efficient fuel system, yachts do not leave the berth. Delays and possibly even the cancelling of an owner’s trip or charter for lack of good husbandry are simply not worth the risk. In today’s technology driven era there are two tools that can assist the engineer in his husbandry duties. They are the fuel additive and the onboard fuel test kit. It is important to not always assume that fuel is in good condition when loaded on board. Buying through an accredited agent both known and trusted by the yacht should give better quality fuel and provide some come back in the event if problems later. Good fuel agents source the best quality fuel at the best prices. They provide yacht crew with recommended bunkering locations, the best times to purchase fuel and also advise on regulations specific to the area. However fuel incorrectly stored or stored in poorly serviced facilities can be prone to increased water content, increased particulate content and possible microbial contamination. This can lead to filter blockage and ultimately increased engine wear and the potential for in tank corrosion.
Keep it clean Poor quality or water contaminated fuel can block filters which can cause the danger, inconvenience and cost of breaking down. It will also cause engines to run inefficiently, burning more fuel. Long term, fuel not of top quality will gradually cause additional wear on engines and potential permanent damage. That’s where fuel additives comes into their own. Fuel additives work in many different ways, from enhancing cetane rating giving more bang to the buck to improving lubricity. They each tackle the challenge of improving efficiency by achieving more complete combustion of available fuel, thus getting more work for any given fuel input. Many have water dispersing agents within them while others go the extra mile when it comes to providing a helping hand. By using XMILE in fuel, guarantees fuel will be of premium quality, minimising risk and long term wear and maintenance costs.
XMILE Med XMILE is an enzyme based fuel enhancer suitable for all engine/fuel types. It is a certified EU fuel supplied to 300,000 daily consumers through their 34 distribution companies, 220 branded fuel stations and direct to companies such as Stena Lines. To guarantee your fuel quality, adding XMILE produces a premium marine fuel solution to yachts and superyachts. Using XMILE improves energy efficiency, reduces soot, smoke and gas emissions as well as reducing engine maintenance requirements. As the product does not take the fuel out of standards, it does not void engine warranties. For more details Tel: +44 (0) 7797 851487 or visit www.xmilemed.com fail three litmus tests: The first asks can the supplier tell you very clearly the physics and chemistry of how their product works within the engine in order to deliver the benefits that they claim? The second asks can they provide independent (ie 3rd party) verification of their performance claims? While the third asks suppliers to provide class type approval showing that their product allows fuel to remain within spec against OEM fuel standards? “Once you’ve asked these questions,” says Franklin, “You end up with a very short shortlist indeed.”
Added benefits
One of the world’s top ship diesel engine analysts, Cees Roos from RDA Ship Support, highly recommends using the product to help to avoid engine damage or problems. All fuel additives work in various different ways but XMILE differs in that it is made from natural plant enzymes containing no chemicals, metals, abrasives or ash forming materials so it is impossible to cause any engine damage. The enzymes act as catalysts with the fuel molecules giving a high ignition quality which enables the fuel to burn correctly and fully efficiently. This fuel can be compared to the quality of that used by car manufacturers when developing and testing engines. The end result is a fuel saving reduction of 5%+.
As with many products, fuel additives have moved with the times, enabling modern science, and this is the case with Cerion’s product GO2, cutting edge applied nanotechnology, to be applied to problems that have been around for many years, with excellent results. We asked, “If it’s so good, why isn’t everyone using it?” He replied, “Well, the answer is that the preconceptions about snake oil do not change overnight, and that engineers are rightly a conservative bunch, who seldom leap at the first new product that comes their way. But three years on, and having won a DAME Award and obtained the first RINA type approval for a performance fuel additive, the superyacht market is buying enough GO2 each season to treat over 5% of the fuel used by the industry, with a rapidly growing customer base and a re-order rate of over 80%, serviced by a network of distribution partners all over the world.
We asked Richard Franklin Managing Director of GO2 Global Yachting if all Fuel additives are not just water dispersants. “That’s just plain fiction!’” he answered. He added “Fuel additives have been around probably as long as fuel and combustion engines. There has undoubtedly been a lot of snake oil marketed over the years.Franklin went on to suggest that most products
Richard Harrison a Director of XMILE Med Limited told us, “At least 300,000 people are already adding our product on a daily basis, both for marine and land.” He added “It provides engineers with a consistent insurance of a premium fuel with all of the benefits: reduced fuel consumption, reduced soot, smoke and other harmful emissions as well as reduced engine

FUEL FOR THOUGHT maintenance costs. Supplied anywhere in the world XMILE is delivered in a concentrated form. As the ratio is 1:10,000, it is convenient for yachts to store and dose their own fuel and has been found to be perfectly safe for crew to handle. The cost of upgrading your fuel with XMILE is also extremely efficient at less than EUR 0.01 to treat 1 litre of fuel. There are currently 34 fuel distributors supplying this branded fuel and there are plans to expand this service across the Mediterranean for the added convenience to superyachts.
Up in smoke Although superyachts may not be very high up in the air pollution offenders, it is still important for each person to “do their bit” in the reduction of harmful gas emissions, especially when near land. Fuel conservation is also an important factor in helping to preserve the world’s declining fossil fuels. Fumes and smoke, which are in fact un burnt hydrocarbons, can also be very unpleasant and dangerous to inhale so any reduction is recommended. The additive has been found to reduce emissions by up to around 70%. One Captain, Danilo Del Bianco the Master of Jasali II, has been using the product specifically for this purpose and is thrilled with the results, especially with the impressive soot and smoke reduction. Captain on board Captain Winston Joyce-Clark of MY Big Fish was equally impressed with the performance of GO2 and allowed his yacht to become the subject of a comprehensive case study which highlighted the positive aspects of using the additive. The key issue currently isn’t CO2 or NOx (although both are important and will increasingly be regulated in future) but soot: black carbon stains on the topsides downwind of exhaust ports, greying of awnings and soft furnishings on deck, soot deposits on the water near to guest swim areas and on the waterlines of tenders and neighbouring yachts. No one likes soot, least of all the crew who has to clean it off, the engineer who gets the blame for it and the owner who gets the bills for re-painting and replacement of soft furnishings, and in some extreme cases, even possible fines for local water pollution.
Reducing emissions Some additives can help reduce Nitrogen and CO2 emissions. Many will give a fuel reduction of 5% + which in turn will reduce CO2 emissions by this figure. It will also reduce NOx by 8-10%. The overall smoke emission reduction will be up to around 70%. Additives are however, just one weapon in the ships husband’s arsenal. On board fuel testing kits are the other. Increasingly the risk of microbial contamination of a yacht’s fuel and the tanks that contain it is putting the vessel at risk. There are many different types of microorganism, under the umbrella term ‘diesel-bug’. They can enter fuel at any stage in the supply chain and given sufficient moisture and time, they will flourish. The bugs live in the water and feed off the fuel. The increased use of bio-fuels seems to exacerbate the problem possibly due to the reduction of sulphur and the addition of FAME (Fatty-Acid Methyl Ester). These harmful micro-organisms, if undetected, can cause blocked fuel filters, increased injector wear and engine damage. If they are left for long periods, without treatment the ‘bugs’, can literally eat through stainless steel. Fuel systems are a perfect habitat for micro-organisms to live and grow. Effective fuel husbandry; regular draining of tank bottoms to ensure no water or sediment build up coupled with periodic fuel testing will ensure your systems are fit for the season ahead.
Global Services Global Services is a world leader in superyacht support. They offer a complete range of equipment, spare parts and consumables for your vessel whilst under construction, during refit and when in operation. For 17 years they have been supplying the top 600 operational superyachts in the industry, building their reputation on quality of service, reliability and expertise. They also have over 250 new build projects under their belt and are proud to work with Europe’s leading shipyards to supply everything found on a superyacht today. Global Services are very pleased to announce, that they are the new distributors for the FUELSTAT® resinae PLUS test kit, within the Superyacht sector. FUELSTAT® resinae PLUS test kit is the latest 10 minute accurate on site fuel test, detecting the diesel bug. For more details Tel: +44 (0) 1392 354 300 or visit www.globalservicesltd.co.uk A fuel maintenance schedule, designed according to risk, should arguably begin with fuel testing to gauge the levels of dieselbug in the system. Fuel testing technology company Conidia Bioscience are manufacturers of the FUELSTAT® resinae PLUS test kit. This onsite fuel test can be conducted wherever fuel is manufactured, stored, distributed or consumed. The 10 minute test is capable of detecting all known organisms which grow in fuel and in fuel systems. The test can even be used prior to bunkering to check fuel quality before loading on board. The objective of this test is to provide rapid screening of fuel samples, giving a quick and accurate assessment of microbiological growth in the fuel tank. This test is unlike current growth-based tests, which require a minimum of 72 hours to provide any results. It measures the amount of active growth in the sample and provides actions and alert levels. Gerry Herman, Technical Manager of Conidia Bioscience advised, “Regular fuel testing, is the only way we can identify a microbial problem. If on testing, the diesel tanks show evidence of moderate levels of microbial contamination then an effective biocide treatment can save the day. If, however microbial growth has been left unchecked for too long and heavy contamination is detected then a tank clean will be in order.” Fuel additives and on board fuel testing kits have entered the 21st century and are increasingly being accepted as a very cost effective way in which to improve fuel economy and reduce environmental emissions, enabling captains and engineers to counter the effects of rising fuel prices and ever tighter environmental legislation. Call them what you like, they are all part of the on board housekeeping routine and are one way of ensuring the yacht has the perfect ship’s husband.

Side-Power, the Norwegian world leading thruster manufacturer, is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned within stabilization. Their new Vector fins received the prestigious Overall Winner Award at last year’s METS show, for their significant improvement in efficiency. In the words of jury chairman Bill Dixon; “The elegantly curved fin better suits many of the modern hull forms to which stabilizers are becoming a standard fit. It’s quite a beautiful piece of engineering that will sit under the water and most people won’t see”. The vector fins have a direct roll reduction force benefit over any straight fin of up to 30% in cruising and up to 50% in “AnySpeed” (at anchor) varying with naval architecture details of the boat. With the very compact new actuators for the Vector fins, this system is of huge interest to anyone who wants the market’s most efficient system, with a minimal loss of internal space. Vikal The late Jon Bannenberg, respected and admired for his role in superyacht design, had a wonderful relationship with Oceanfast commencing in the mid 1980’s. During that period, Vikal was commissioned to build some Bannenberg designed hulls and superstructures and this gave him the insight as to what could be accomplished in composite as opposed to aluminium. In 1993 he commissioned Vikal to build two tenders for MY Coral Island and this started Vikal’s specialisation in superyacht tenders. YACHT ESSENTIALS Design Studio Spadolini
Tommaso Spadolini has a long history, over 200 yachts with his signature sails the world’s seas today. Perhaps his greatest skill lies on his capacity of listening to his clients needs, expectations, desires and dreams. Tommaso has developed a special capacity of creating a flawless synergy between exterior design and
internal lay-outs. The exterior is often just few simple lines that give the final lines strength and gentleness imperfect harmony. The interior division of spaces is always a well balanced optimization between privacy for the owner, maximization of space coupled with crew and service passages being discreet and
efficient. Looking back at his yacht design over the years it appears that Tommaso’s yacht are very often ahead of their time; some of his designs 20 years ago are still very much at home in today’s modern superyacht world. For more details Tel: +39 055 223558 or visit www.spadolini.it

BODY The latest facts, fads and tips to help keep your body in shape this summer
WHAT IS... A Chopstick Facial?
Chopsticks you say? In a facial? But there’s method in this madness. Because instead of the prodding and pinching that you might expect, they’re rolled around eye sockets, across the forehead and along cheekbones. And it feels delightful.
DID YOU KNOW? A calorie is a calorie, no matter what type of food it comes from There is a growing amount of research showing it is the type of food, not the number of calories, that makes us gain weight. The amount of calories may be the same for different foods but the effect they have on our metabolic function can be quite different. A 2001 Harvard
study that examined factors linked to weight gain found foods such as nuts, avocados, whole grain and even whole milk are associated with weight loss, while the same amount of calories from refined grains and fatty foods such as French fries and crisps lead to weight gain.
BEAUTY MYTHS Curling your lashes with mascara on breaks them
FALSE (KIND OF)
Whilst formulas of yesteryear may well have led to brittle lashes, these days technology has meant that your lashes are more likely to benefit from a cocoon of mascara than not. So when it comes to curling, traditional advice to curl pre any wand action to avoid snapping off your lashes doesn’t necessarily ring true thanks to the high tech flexible polymers and nourishing oils and waxes in modern mascaras.
Mood Altering Exercise When you exercise, the brain releases feel-good chemicals that help you feel motivated, calm or energized. Try these specific activities the next time you feel anxious or down-in-the-dumps.
Stressed out or anxious
High-energy exercise, such as boxing and martial arts, provide an effective release of negative emotions. To keep stress hormone levels under control, any exercise that’s aerobic, upbeat and stimulates circulation is excellent. To reduce the stress hormone “cortisol,” include 30 minutes of noncompetitive aerobic activity, including swimming and cycling.
Fatigued or sleepy
A review of 12 studies on the connection between exercise and fatigue measured the amount of physical activity and how much fatigue the participants experienced. All found a direct link between reduced fatigue and active exercise. You don’t need to run a marathon to pump up stamina, just 20 minutes of power walking or sun salutations will do wonders.
Unfocused or ill-at-ease
Exercise improves your ability to think more clearly. A short bout of cardio is enough to unlock a mental block, 20 to 30 minutes of aerobics such as power walking, running and biking.
Sad or lethargic
Working out with an empathetic friend or heading outside for a bike ride can battle this slump. Just 30 minutes of steady exercise, from elliptical training and stair climbing to weight lifting and crosscountry keeps stress off your joints, and burns those calories. ONBOARD | SUMMER 2014 | 115

BODY Sunscreen is one of the few things standing between you and healthy skin. Make sure you invest in one that ticks all the right protection boxes by checking the logos on the packaging
UVB VS UVA
Level of SPF
While UVB rays cause burning, they account for just 5% of the sun’s rays. DNA damage from UVA rays can result in skin cancer and break down collagen, which leads to ageing. Ensure your sun cream says ‘broad spectrum’ or displays these icons to protect against both.
The Sun Protection Factor indicates the level of UVB protection. No product can block 100% of the rays, but an SPF30 can shield over 95% of UVB. If a product has UV filters but no SPF, don’t risk it.
UVA Circle
Use-by date
Whenever you see UVA encircled on the sunscreen packaging it means that your product contains the minimum UVA protection recommended by the European Commission, which is at least a third of the UVB protection.
The time period in the open jar symbol shows how long you should keep an opened product. Extreme heat can degrade ingredients, so it’s best not to use products from last summer.
Star rating
Chemical or mineral
Boots originally devised a starrating guide for UVA protection in their sunscreens, which is now commonly used on most sunscreens. Look for minimum three-star rating, which offers up to 80% protection; five-star offers up to 100%.
Chemical filters protect from both A and B rays, but can make people’s eyes water and must be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure. Mineral protects from B rays immediately; look for one with zinc oxide to protect from both rays.
SKIN EXPERT TIP Avoid cleansers containing petrolatum as they will impair absorption of UV filters and compromise their efficacy

Take a hike Muriel Pénoty suggests some hiking options on the Mediterranean for the more adventurous charter guests
(Walk of Love), the famous itinerary dug into the rock, built between the I and II World Wars during the boring of the railway tunnels between Manarola and Riommaggiore and between Riomaggiore and La Spezia. Its panoramic position peaking onto the sea gives priceless romantic moments. The route, after a short stretch under an artificial arcade, offers a view of a wide variety of exotic plants such as agave and prickly pear, as well as interesting geological formations in various layers. The walk ends in front of Riomaggiore railway station. CAVO GRECO PARK
ITALY LE CINQUE TERRE Not far from Portofino discover this wonderful area. These are some of the most scenic hikes you can do in Italy. Hike along the coast from one village to the next. We have selected a couple of paths which are not difficult and easily accessible from the ocean. FROM MONTEROSSO TO VERNAZZA (The tender can drop you off at one beach and pick you up at the other, although you can go back by train.) Duration: 1h30 mins From the beach, go to the Monterosso railway station, then take the road to the left which goes towards the old village. From the central square of the village go up towards Hotel Porto Roca. A steep flight of steps winds from here in the midst of allotments cultivated with

lemons (the real origin of the Sentiero Azzuro) and takes walkers up high. From here the mule-track is transformed into a route characterized by lots of ups and downs in amongst the olive trees, vineyards, beds of torrents, cottages and terraced land. The path is sometimes difficult to pass along due to the numerous landslides which occur after heavy rain. Part of the path leads along an embankment, then gradually descends towards the sea, over to Costa Linaro and Costa Mesorano (two secondary crests) having passed by the local cemetery. The path ends in front of the chemist shop at Vernazza. MANAROLA TO RIOMAGGIORE (LA VIA DELL’AMORE) THE LOVER’S PATH Duration: 30 mins Go to the Manarola railway station and take the steps that lead to the Sentiero Azzuro which meets the Via dell’Amore
A National Forest Park at the southern end of the island between Ayia Napa and Paralimni. The uniqueness of the area is not only due to its natural beauty but also to the fact that it offers a wide range of interests such as swimming, diving, towed parachute, fishing, rowing, cycling, riding, climbing, air sports and hiking. The vegetation is dominated by coastal shrubs of which the most frequent observed species is Juniperus phoenicea and plants such as chrysanthemums, wild onions, poppies, anemones, mainly in spring time. There about 300 plant species in the area, 11 of which are endemic. To date, 9 trails have been constructed in Cape Greco Paralimni area. KONNOS TO SPILIA KYKLOPA (CYCLOP’S CAVE) Starting point/end point: Konnos Beach Distance: 2.5km – Duration: 1h A walk along the coast leading to natural caves, the best known of which is the Cyclop’s Cave. A kiosk operates on Konnos Beach.
FRANCE THE GOLDEN ISLANDS (NEAR TOULON) PORQUEROLLES Walking around the island of Porquerolles means discovering a subtle border between water and land, between men’s wisdom and excess ... CIRCUIT THE MIDI Distance: 6km – Duration 2 hours No real altitude, only 90m, the path can be started from the centre of the island very close to the Marina. It is a loop that takes you inland with a detour to the Loup Canyon and to the lighthouse: A real discovery of the botanical wealth of the island. You can also choose to walk (about 2 hours round trip) to the Notre Dame beach which is located on the East part of the Island. Or if you’re anchored there, walk to the village and back. PORT CROS ISLAND There are no cars nor bikes allowed on the entire island. However there are nearly 30 km of marked trails which enables you to discover the island by foot. The land, the sea, everything is worthwhile, provided you take the time to stop, observe, listen ... The National Park is a place which harbours a wide variety of biodiversity. For those who would like to combine snorkeling and hiking, Plage de la Palud (Beach of La Palud)
is 45 minutes from the centre of the village. Here you can snorkel in the beautiful underwater trail of La Palud. Amid the turquoise waters, dive amongst a multitude of fish and exceptional aquatic plants. THE ISLAND LE LEVANT (THE SUNRISE) The island is under military control for about 5km. Only a small portion, mainly naturist, in the western part of the island is open to the public. Naturism is possible everywhere except in public places, the harbour and the town square. CIRQUE LA GALÈRE Distance: 2h30mn There is a nature trail which goes from the top of the village towards the Cirque la Galère (Creek of the Galeirus), then along the coast to return to the port. ANTIBES THE DOUANIERS (CUSTOM OFFICER’S) PATHWAY Start/finish: La Garoupe Beach Distance: 5 km - Duration: 2 hours Advice: Wear walking shoes. From the Garoupe beach, follow the wide coastal footpath facing the ramparts of Old Antibes. This will lead you to a cove where the land is flatter. The path soon gives way to a paved one leading to Cap
Gros, then running alongside the walls surrounding the great parks of the private properties “Château de la Garoupe” and “Château de la Croé”: the winding and sometimes narrow route leads along the rocky headland and around some small creeks. This brings you to the tip of Cap d’Antibes where you will find the Villa Eilenroc. Head inland via the “sentier des Douaniers”, enclosed by two walls separating the path from the landscaped gardens full of wonderful fragrances, then follow avenue Beaumont until it joins the main boulevard Francis Meill and, then return to the beach via avenue de la Tour Gandolphe. LE CHEMIN DU CALVAIRE, CAP D’ANTIBES Start/finish: La Salis Beach Distance: 5 km - Duration: 2 hours (wear walking shoes) From the Salis Beach, walk along the sea front via boulevard James Wyllie, pass by the little port and take the pilgrims’ path “Chemin du Calvaire” (on the right at the bend). Follow this path all the way to the Garoupe plateau and the orientation table. You can return via the road: take the Route du Phare (lighthouse), then the Avenue Aimé Bourreau on the left as far as boulevard Grand Bacon, in order to get back to the Chemin du Calvaire and the sea front.

GREECE There are over 9000 Greek islands of which only 227 are inhabited. That leaves plenty to go and explore on your own. AMORGOS The 1988 movie “The Big Blue” with Jean Reno was shot on the island of Amorgòs (by Agia Beach), at the south eastern edge of the Cyclades. Parts of the island reach a considerable height above sea level, offering superb views out over the Archipelago. Amorgós is one of the most impressive Cycladic islands, boasting marvellous beaches with azure waters, gorgeous caves, ideal spots for diving, scenic bays and ancient footpaths leading through its steep rocky terrain… Inhabited since the Protocycladic Era, as indicated by archaeological finds brought to light in the area, Amorgós has a long cultural history and tradition. Step off the beaten track and visit an island that has preserved its traditional colour, where the locals welcome you with a smile on their face and make you feel at home!
SPAIN PALMA DE MALLORCA CALA RATJADA, NORTH EASTERN PART OF THE ISLAND Length: 6km Duration: 2.5 hrs Altitude:100m Start/finish: Cala Ratjada (loop trail) From the pretty port of Cala Ratjada follow the coastal path to Cala Gat and head up to the light house via a narrow coastal path. There is a tiny bit of scrambling involved along this path that has deteriorated in places, but you get lovely views, and it’s a great spot from which to watch the cormorants dive for their prey. Continue around the headland of Cap de Capdepera, passing the ruined Torre de Embucada and enjoy spectacular views of Menorca on a clear day. Crossing some open heath-land you then meander along easy sandy paths through pine woods, zig-zagging through some “urbanisations” to finally arrive at the south east end of Cala Agulla. From there take a lovely shaded, sandy path through the woods back to where you started in the bustling Port of Cala Ratjada. 122 | SUMMER 2014 | ONBOARD
COASTAL CIRCUIT AROUND CAP DE CALA FIGUERA (LOOP TRAIL) SOUTH WEST PART OF THE ISLAND Distance: 10km Duration: 3.5hrs Altitude: 200m Start/Finish: Playa el Mago Starting from the first of a series of delightful coves, Cala el Mago, follow the beautiful coastline, crossing broad rock shelves and scrambling up a few steep scrubby slopes to reach more beaches and then a plateau beyond. The route takes you past marble quarry caves (quarried in the 16th Century for stone for Palma Cathedral), which you can explore before continuing on south towards to the lighthouse and ruined watchtower. From there go over unspoiled heath and scrubland, still along the coastline, and continue west to a number of natural look-out points across the dramatic Cala Rafeubetx. Continuing north follow the coast and then follow sandy paths and tracks to return to Cala el Mago, from where you set off.
AGIA ANNA CHURCH TO MONASTERY OF HOZOVIOTISSIS Duration: 2h00 (with visits to monastery) 2km (300m altitude) The path leaves from Agia Anna Beach, follow it to the little church, then go up (350 steps) to the Monastery. The path is steep, but short and it is worthwhile. It’s a dazzling white building embedded in an awesome cliff high above the sea. It lies just below the town of Hora. Tours of the monastery are free but donations are accepted. They are conducted by one of the monks on site and usually take place when a reasonable number of visitors have gathered at the door.
ADVERTORIAL
The clear advantage Andreas Schipper looks at the evolution of using glass within superyacht design and construction and asks, what does the future hold?
I
n the early years of superyacht design and construction, windows were simply required to admit daylight into the cabins, bridge and staterooms, and also to withstand impact from waves. Limited technologies meant that the windows of a classic yacht like Nahlin or Talitha G were small when compared to the modern era. Beautiful witnesses of the early times of Superyacht building.
was installed flush to the hull or superstructure surface without any mechanical frame and this required new installation methods. These innovations also meant that not every supplier was capable of fulfilling these new demands. However, forward thinking and innovative companies updated their manufacturing methods and invested in training their employees to become all encompassing specialists.
At the end of the 20th century, when designs for superyachts became more and more eye-catching and unique, utilising different colours, profiles and shapes, the requirement for specialized glass grew. Various innovations followed; glazing manufactured with coloured inter layers, ultra thin metal coatings gave superyacht windows a mirror reflective appearance, even curved windows were installed into the superstructure of the owner’s areas.
Design and innovation
An excellent example of the development of superyacht windows is the 1991 motor yacht Enigma (ex Eco). Manufacturers and suppliers were immediately asked to respect the new requirements and upgrade their technologies. Glazing for yachts were now made as multi laminated units to allow larger and stronger windows. The glass products were toughened by thermal or chemical treatment and the application of coloured films or reflective coatings gave yacht windows a beautiful surface.
Driven by demand Until the early years of the 21st century, basic production technologies met the requirements of superyacht designers. But as time went on more demands were added; windows needed to withstand fire, to be bulletproof or blast resistant, the surfaces needed to illuminate during the night or to be selfcleaning. The supply of windows and glazing in the superyacht world became more complex and challenging. The first project undertaken where the superstructure appears to be built completely of glass was the Feadship motor yacht Venus. Glazing
Today new manufacturing methods can produce a single glass pane with a width totalling 15 metres. Highly skilled engineers and suppliers developed new methods for bedding and installation of the panes to integrate these very large units into the structure of the yacht. By utilising new materials for the lamination of glass panels, the thickness and weight of the panes can be reduced to almost half of a ‘classic styled window’. This became more important in terms of helping to keep the overall weight of a yacht to a minimum. The first type of this specialist glass approved with these essential properties was ‘GLY-MarineCobond’ from GL Yachtverglasung in Germany, Lloyds Registered with approval in January 2014. During a series of very extensive testing, these products proved worthy of exceeding the demands of new and future superyacht designs. Glass is a functional material and can be upgraded with plenty of elementary safety characteristics. Further to this, because of its transparency and the unique scope for design using colours and shapes, glass is now an essential part of the appearance of any superyacht. We will follow the future development of this innovative material and see how it will have a greater influence on the superyacht designs of the future. The fully glazed superyacht? Maybe a question of time… For more details Tel: +49 (4101) 37556-0 or visit www.gl-yachtverglasung.de ONBOARD | SUMMER 2014 | 123

MYBA UPDATE
Simply the best 2014 MYBA Chef and Yacht Service Competition and the winners are...
H
aving established itself as an integral part of the annual MYBA Charter Show, this year’s 2nd edition Chefs’ Competition comprised of talented chefs from no less than 24 yachts, each one keen to demonstrate the culinary skills and creative talent emanating from his or her galley. A second and equally important part of this year’s competition was the ‘Yacht Service Award’ which recognised the contribution of the crew and serving staff in creating the right overall impression; by working together to provide a warm welcome on board and in supporting their Chefs as one cohesive and enthusiastic team. With the unsurpassed quality, creativity and presentation of freshly prepared food and drink regarded as one of the unique and single most important aspects of luxury charter, the opportunity for a Chef and service staff to be recognised for attainment at the highest level is very important. And with the marketing of luxury charter yachts being such a competitive business, achieving a recognisable accolade, one which can give a yacht a competitive edge over and above that of others, can be seen as a highly valuable asset. Divided into three categories based upon yacht length, Chefs were asked to express originality, presentation, taste, creativity and use of seasonal ingredients appropriate to this year’s theme, which was to provide an ‘International Brunch with Baked Goods Basket’ as the main challenge. As in previous years, the judging panel comprised an independently elected group comprising charter brokers, yacht provisioning experts, two professional Genovese Head Chefs from renowned eateries and lastly, selected staff from our valued rostrum of sponsors. A DAY
in the life of a... Marine Engineer Mark Herdman first discovered the superyacht industry while he was cruising around the Caribbean on a small 62ft sailing yacht. Mark had just spent the best part of three weeks in the San Blas Islands. Whilst in Colon Panama Mark met the crew of MY Tully, started chatting and found out the Chief Engineer was from Mark’s neighbouring village in the UK. After returning home, as a qualified engineer, Mark visited a crew agent in Antibes and joined a yacht where he met his future wife Manuela. For a change and to spend more time with his family he started Ensign Marine Engineering in 2009.
Mark
The day begins Now my day starts at 7am waking up the kids and going through the usual routine of trying to get them dressed and ready for the off, whilst keeping a firm grip on my sanity. My breakfast consists of a pint of freshly ground coffee, and a bowl of Coco Pops. The kids head off to school and then my colleague Mike arrives at about 8am. We check through the appointments for the day and double check we have everything in the van required for the full day’s adventure. I live not far from Lake St Cassien in the Var, its great here, there is clean air and not a yacht in sight!
Starting work
Full English
The jobs can be very diverse, from a broken tender to a full gearbox removal or installation. Regular maintenance contracts and general servicing all over the Riviera can fill out the days pretty well. During the day we also receive calls from yachts all over the world looking for advice. Being an ‘X’ Chief Engineer I have a vast amount of knowledge on all the major yacht systems, anything I don’t know I can find out very quickly from my many contacts and sources. Then it’s my favourite time of the day and off to lunch!
Lunch
Up and down the passerelles 126 | SUMMER 2014 | ONBOARD
If we are in Antibes or near enough, we normally head straight for the Hop Store. Not wanting to digest the menu for too long we usually opt for a dirty great big burger or a full English, washed down with a cold pint of shandy. If we’re elsewhere along the coast then we will always brave the Plat du Jour, but I know where I’d rather be! During lunch we also make a few calls to clients and make sure we have the afternoon’s appointments lined up and check the supplies.
Afternoon The work can be pretty varied, but that’s the great thing about it. I loved my time on the yachts and the experience was invaluable, but when the family came along I know I made the right choice. Every day is a new day in terms of what we can be doing and that’s another aspect I love about this job. We get to meet loads of interesting people and lots of old friends, so pretty much every day is full of fun and hard work. If we are servicing main engines such as Caterpillars 3508 series we can move up to 1000 litres of oil, all in 20 ltr drums, up and down the many stairs, across wobbly passerelles and finally into my van. I guess it burns off the calories from the lunch! I can get a range of emergency call outs throughout the week, when we have to down tools and run to the rescue. I had one client that was a first time superyacht owner. For some reason he thought it was okay to live on board the yacht with his wife but no crew! This yacht was 37m long, an old classic and in need of some TLC.
Lac St Cassien
One evening I had an urgent call from the owner. A water pipe had burst and flooded the yacht while they were having dinner, this was the moment he realised the importance of having experienced crew onboard. Luckily there wasn’t much damage, but his dinner had gone cold! They hadn’t even told their children that they had brought a huge yacht, not sure they wanted to, but I bet it was a nice surprise. At the end of the afternoon we head back to base camp, check the schedule for the next day and load up the van. I spend time sourcing parts, creating new quotes and invoicing. There will always be a few calls to the yachts we worked on in the previous week, just to checkout how things are performing and to get some feedback.
Manuela Family andtime the kids
Day’s End During the week there are regular visits to the osteopath to fix my back… and then back home to my little slice of paradise and family. Dependent on the weather and time of year it’s off to the swimming pool with the kids to cool down. I also love to fire up the barbecue and of course crack open a nice cold beer. Not long after dinner it’s bed time for the kids, the battle commences to get them bathed, teeth cleaned and in their pyjamas and off to bed. Then it’s the best time of the day. Some me and wifey time. Just the two of us and a glass or two of rosé reflecting on the day’s shenanigans. Happy days!

ARE VINYL FILMS ADVANTAGEOUS AND RELEVANT?
WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A ROSÉ?
IS THERE A GROWING NEED FOR CHASE BOATS?
ARE APPS A STANDARD PART OF A TOOLKIT?
Owners and Captains are seeing the advantages more and more in using films as an alternative to paint. In the past films offered effects such as carbon, pearlescent and branding. However, modern day films are quite exceptional if applied correctly and are now considered ‘paint on a roll’. They are consistent, easier to apply and mess free! Films are clean, non intrusive, quick to install, environmentally friendly, and offer excellent UV resistance. From radar arms to full hull and superstructure covering, films can be used to totally change the look and feel of a yacht. When thinking about resale, a film finish can be removed and while it is in place, it is protecting the surface underneath.
Provence is almost unique in using its best grapes for the production of dry Rosé wines. Extracting colour and flavour from the skin of black grapes, without getting layers of harsh, bitter tannins is a real art, and accounts for why rosé can run from the extremely cheap to the very expensive. One of the best grape varieties for accomplishing this is Grenache which can provide lovely strawberry flavours whilst also giving a fresh, nasturtium leaf pepperiness and spice. The Grenache hallmark is a distinct orangey tint to its hue, and this, coupled with a paleness of colour (indicating judicious use of skin contact) are the signs to look for in a Provence Rosé.
Owners of superyachts have realised that it’s often difficult to reach certain locations with their motherships because of their size, and it takes a while to hoist anchors and move on a whim to meet friends for lunch elsewhere. There is also the growing selection of toys needed, especially on family charters. The tenders can’t cope, so what’s the solution? Chase boats or shadow boats are growing in popularity as a practical solution. OTAM is a strong contender for this chase boat role with its full range of 55 knots offshore sport boats and yachts that can be customized to match the requirements of these discerning clients.
With the huge variety of apps available, tablets and smartphones can already replicate much of the navigation and tracking functionality that was previously only available with a complicated on board device. Navigation apps mean that passage planning and navigation en-route can now be done from a tablet and journeys shared between the boat systems. Demonstrating the move towards web-service based formats, our new marine logbook app, WaveTrax, creates logs using your device’s GPS. It is still important that tablets or smartphones are not used as substitutes for the primary navigation, weather, radar and other communications systems on board, but should always be present as safety coverage.

RECRUIT
Team talk Laurence Lewis looks at what it takes to build a great crew
M
y deadline to turn in my paper to ONBOARD was looming dangerously close and I was in need of inspiration… Thankfully I got distracted by the opening game of The World Cup, Brazil V Croatia and within minutes the ultimate faux pas of Marcello scoring an own goal. The show must go on and the team must recover, stay focused and regroup. Just like a good yacht crew.
on what is expected from the crew, the tighter the team will be. It’s that idea of reaching a common goal which obviously is a successful owner or charter trip which will rally the team together. Crew have to buy into the plans and understand that everybody is a part of a big puzzle, it is vital that crew understand each other’s jobs and the challenges others face in order to be successful. Communication and respect is key.
Team spirit is an attribute most captains mention when describing the ideal crew member. It of course makes sense and nobody is going to argue to the contrary. Yet, building a solid team is challenging and, if arguably the natural order of the world is chaos, how does one build such a tight crew? What is the secret?
Credit where credit is due
Trust and believe As recruiters we speak and interact with a wide range of yacht crew, from the small twenty five metres to the very large yachts with crew of 80 and more. Why do some yachts have a loyal crew and enjoy little turnover when others shed crew at a fast pace? Can the stability of the former only be explained by above average salaries and perhaps inviting rotational packages? These factors undeniably count but are not the grail and in fact, we have witnessed high crew turnover on yachts paying way above market rate. Teams are built, they do not just happen and clearly, building effective teams emanates from the top, the captain who himself may take his cues from the owner and or the management company. The captain sets the tone of the atmosphere on board, he gives direction and the clearer the communication
When objectives and goals are met crew need recognition and if it does not come from the owner, it should at least come from the captain. Recognition is a vital element in building strong teams, as a result, individuals feel valued and motivation increases. Conflicts, as and when they arise, have to be addressed quickly, behaviours have to be corrected as, we all know, it only takes one negative person to bring down a whole team. If a crew member does not fit, alternative choices have to be made, for the sake of the team. Making crew accountable for their actions is important and whilst there is a common goal, it is the accumulation of personal goals at an individual level which will contribute to the overall success. Camaraderie is vital on a yacht, where crew live and work in a confined environment and here too, it comes from the top. It’s a cliché, but the work hard play hard rule always works and being able to relax together is vital, whether on the slopes, at the beach or the bar. The major difference between a top yacht crew and a dysfunctional one? Communication, communication. FINANCE
The secret to success Rob Kay discusses the five basic principles of successful investing
I
n my view, there are five key aspects that you need to address to ensure you obtain the optimum investment portfolio to suit you and your particular situation.
The right tax efficient structure A tax efficient structure, such as an ISA or pension plan in the UK, can provide protection to help you legitimately avoid paying too much tax. You want to ensure that as much of your hard-earned wealth as possible is placed in the most suitable structure to limit your tax liabilities. This is harder to achieve outside the UK, with foreign tax systems and frequent changes. It gets more complicated when your tax planning involves more than one country, or if your tax residency is unclear or changes. It is crucial to take specialist advice to ensure your investment returns are not slashed by unnecessary taxation.
Your appetite for risk Of course, no risk means no returns. And arguably these days, even bank accounts carry risk. Most of us recognise that for some of our assets, exposure to market movements gives us a better chance of outperforming inflation and producing real returns over the medium to long term. However, the starting point has to be to obtain a clear and objective assessment of your appetite for risk. Otherwise your investment portfolio will probably not be suitable for you. These days there are some very sophisticated ways of evaluating your risk appetite, involving a combination of psychometric assessments and consideration of your other assets and aims.
that is too risky or cautious for you. As sailors know, a glassy sea means no progress whereas a strong wind and choppy waves can be too risky. The ideal scenario is finding the conditions, investment portfolio in this case, that suits you best.
Diversification It is critical to ensure your investments are suitably diversified, so you are not over-exposed to any given asset type, country, sector or stock. By spreading across different assets and markets, you give your portfolio the chance to produce positive returns over time without being vulnerable to any single area or stock under-performing. This sound investment approach should be extended by utilising a ‘multi-manager’ approach. Several different fund managers are blended together to reduce reliance on any one manager making the right decisions in all market conditions.
Review Finally, it is important to review your portfolio around once a year to re-balance it, or delegate responsibility to a reputable discretionary investment manager to do that for you. You may need to make adjustments to re-establish your original weighting, and should also consider if any of your circumstances have changed and the implications for your overall portfolio. Five key principles which applied well can help you have the peace of mind to sleep at night, while your investments and investment managers work to your requirements.
Matching your risk profile to the optimum portfolio
For advice on your situation, contact Rob Kay, Senior Partner at the Blevins Franks Var & Côte d’Azur office on +33 (0)4 93 00 17 80 or visit www.blevinsfranks.com
Every set of investments can be forecast to display a given amplitude of risk. Low amplitude, less risk but also lower likely returns. A higher amplitude of risk brings greater potential returns. The key is ensuring your investment portfolio matches your attitude to risk, or you could find yourself with a portfolio
