Editorial Adrenaline This month I kicked off my intern shoes and stepped into the Editor’s (much larger) boots. Making decisions hasn’t been easy, and the learning curve has been steep, but the experience has been invaluable. Following up on stories, chasing media passes and arranging meetings has (finally) cured my phobia of speaking on the phone, and I have learned just how much work and organisation goes into putting together a monthly publication. It has been a crazy few weeks: I’ve been to press conferences and photo shoots, I have interviewed some extremely talented people (p. 12-13 and p.48-49) and tried my best to keep my cool while sitting behind Naomi Campbell. I was lucky enough to attend two huge fashion events, VFDE and Fashion Forward (p.2021); I attended Gulf Bike Week and GITEX; edited some truly moving articles (p. 52-53), and shared my thoughts on films and music. I have written, edited, organised, collated, proof-read and then edited some more, and loved every minute. This month’s cover features Nahla Al Rostamani, the UAE’s first female Emirati Formula1 driver (p.38-41). Her journey to success and achieving her dreams is such an inspiring one, I feel very lucky to be starting my editorial career by featuring such an exceptional example of a strong and independent working woman! I certainly hope that some of her confidence has rubbed off on me while editing this issue. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed editing!

A.M. Hello, I have been following your magazine for some time now and upon meeting one of your members at a university fair, I expressed my interest in writing/editing for your magazine. I would be ecstatic to have the opportunity to work for this publication. M.A. Dear one8one magazine, I’m 16 years old and I’ve been interested in modeling for a very long time now...I would be delighted if you would give me an opportunity to get some experience in modeling with your magazine. I’ve heard great things about your magazine through my close friend who actually modeled for your “Back to School” issue a while ago...
S.D. Hi one8one, I’ve been a fan of your photography page for a while now and thhought I’d show you my photos. I hope you like and share them with other readers. T.Y. I am in love with your fashion shoots! I wanna try to be a model but not sure if I’m tall enough. Anyway, I’d love to try! Thank you for the opportunity.

AAM girls sing to the rhythm of beat boxing! Boots, cats, tickets, cats! These are the deep, rhythmic sounds that a human “beat boxer” can perform – not on a drum, but using her own mouth as an instrument, explained an excited Lynda Chmarny-Intaj, Head of Student and Community Life and Performing Arts Teacher at the American Academy in Al-Mizhar, a Taaleem school. Last week, Chmarny-Intaj organised the first-ever Beat Boxing workshop at a Dubai school, featuring Dubai resident, Ray, the 2012 Middle East Beat Boxing Champion. Khadija, a 10th Grade at AAM said she was mesmerised by the Beat Boxing sounds. “It is not rap,” Khadija said in explaining this art form made popular by musicians like Justin Timberlake. “It’s something really hard to do. It’s unique, and not many people can do it. I find it really cool.” Beat Boxing is the art of making percussion sounds with your mouth. Khadija said she will put this new skill to use in her Advanced Choir class. Another Grade 10 AAM student who attended the workshop was Fatima. “If you become an international rock star, then you don’t have to create fake music,” Fatima joked. “I enjoyed seeing something different. It’s not every day you hear music like this. I think it’s interesting to see other things that people are doing.” Fatima and Khadija are both amateur musicians who sing and play the violin. by Adeyela Bennett

He announced that WhatsApp now has over 350 million active users and when the students asked if WhatsApp would ever feature advertising in order to increase its profit, they were assured that the company would never add such features. Engaging questions followed on the application’s features; technicality; the company’s challenges within the current competitive market; the company’s future plans; spam and privacy, and business growth. On October 24th the people of Abu Dhabi came together again to break the Guinness World Record title for “The Most People Waving Chequered Flags”. An amazing 258 chequered flags fluttered on the Abu Dhabi Corniche, creating an incredible sight and firing up the city-wide celebrations ahead of the race. The world record attempt was organised by Flash Entertainment as part of Yasalam 2013 to celebrate its fifth year. Yasalam is the largest city-wide entertainment programme run by any race host city – and the flag waving marked the official opening of the F1 FanZone™ on the Corniche in style. This year’s Yasalam will include four nights of after-race concerts at the Yas Island du Arena with performances from artists such as Jay Z, Muse, Depeche Mode and Arab stars Hussain Al Jasmi, Elissa, and Amr Diab. WWE beats down on bullying at BSAK British School Al Khubairat was recently treated to a visit by WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) stars, Kofi Kingston and Santino Marella, who came to speak to students from Years 7 to 10 on the issue of bullying. The wrestling legends were promoting the “Be a STAR” anti-bullying campaign, standing for Show Tolerance And Respect. The assembly focused on his own experiences with bullies at school, what to do if you’re being bullied or see someone being bullied and touched on the topic of cyber bullying. Santino mentioned how social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are abused by bullies who hide behind a computer screen. He suggested ways to handle cyber bullying, such as not staying quiet and by going to an adult for help. He explained how students should use the negativity and “turn it into motivation.” They are very enthusiastic about reaching out to the younger generation through the “Be a STAR” campaign and believe that hearing the message from somebody famous is often more likely to make an impact. “If I affect just one student then this is all worth it,” Santino said. He also talked about his own personal experiences of bullying, and how he dealt with it. “People told me I was too short to play basketball and that I wasn’t talented enough to make it as a professional wrestler,” he explained. He spoke about how he stood up to the bullies, and encouraged the children to also make a stance against bullies. The assembly was well received by the pupils, teachers and parents who felt it was extremely beneficial. Kofi and Santino were visiting Abu Dhabi as part of the WWE live tour, which took place at Zayed Sports City on Friday 11 October.

Call of Duty: Ghosts (PC, PS 3, PS 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One) It is the tenth instalment of the Call of Duty series that includes different multiplayer gameplay with new mechanics. The maps have new features like destroyed or changed areas, while some other maps have the Odin Strike available which is a Nuke-like kill streak. There is also now an option to play as a female soldier. Improved features include character customisations, shooting while peeking from behind a cover and automatic mantling of objects. Another option players will be thankful for is having the ability to control environmental hazards, rather than them activating automatically. Hidden sub-missions in the campaign add variety to its linear format and will be unlocked when players pick up certain objects or perform a specific action.
Killzone: Shadow Fall (PS 4) It is a first person shooter game, sixth in the Killzone series and set 30 years after Killzone 3. Helghan is in ruins, and the war still continues; its refugees are allowed to settle on the planet Vekta, but they have to fight for their right to exist as the Vektans struggle for survival and tensions run high between the borders. New weapons are introduced such as a hybrid sniper rifle/assault rifle, as well as OWL, an advanced hovering attack drone that can also be used as a zip line or a shield to hack terminals. The multiplayer option has three classes to choose from, Assault, Scout and Support.
Need for Speed Rivals (PS 4, PS 3, PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One) The stakes are taken one step higher in the new NFS game which allows you to choose a side of the law: cop or racer. Each offers a new set of risks, challenges and, ultimately, rewards. The more risk, the more progress, but get busted and see your speed points get taken away by the cops. Eleven new upgradable gadgets are made available such as shockwaves, EMPs and one which allows you to call in roadblocks.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (PS 4, PS 3, PC, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One) Set at the beginning of the 18th century in the Caribbean, in this game you stand with pirates as they establish a lawless republic. This is the biggest Assassin’s Creed world ever created with 50 unique locations and terrain such as jungles, forts, ruins and small villages. The world also opens up sooner than in Assassin’s Creed III. The players are also able to engage, capture and board other ship as well as swim to the shore. The new hunting system allows players to hunt on land as well as harpoon at sea.
Tearaway (PS Vita) At first look the game objective appears to be very simple. However, what makes this game stand out is the use of PS Vita’s touch screen, back panel and camera which are all integrated to blend the real and virtual worlds. You can take a picture with the camera and have it applied to an animal or use the rear touch pad to kill enemies and move objects. All in all this game is unique and innovative, and will keep you playing for hours.

Before Eid we spent a stylish evening at Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience, lusting after the shoes in the Level Shoe District and the clothes on the catwalk. But fashion wasn’t the only thing on offer over the weekend; up in the Level Shoe District visitors were treated over three days to a fabulous array of musical numbers including ballet, tap, street-jazz and the music of American-Iraqi singer Yasmeen.
Making her Middle Eastern debut following a trip to London to promote her upcoming album I Don’t Get Paid for This, Yasmeen and her team are nothing if not jet setters. Having only returned to LA from London two days before boarding a flight to Dubai, Yasmeen admitted that venturing to new countries to take on new audiences has been the toughest part of launching her career. ‘It’s really nerve wracking because you never know how people are going to respond’, but so far the response has been overwhelmingly positive and, if anything like in Dubai, it seems they are on perfect track to launch their album early next year. Smartphones were filming galore and several admirers stopped to pay Yasmeen compliments and take pictures after the show. They have also already been approached by people expressing interest in them returning to Dubai in the near future, possibly to perform at an event for New Year, and the performance wasn’t even their full ensemble! Because of restrictions with the venue Yasmeen performed at VFDE with just a backing track. Usually Yasmeen is accompanied by a full band with a cello, guitar, piano and bass drums as well as backing vocalists or, for acoustic sets, just a live cello and guitar; but this made her performance no less impressive and I was astounded by the powerful and soulful vocals coming from such a soft-spoken girl. Her on-stage energy was definitely contagious as she performed two original songs to round off a show of music and dance which moved from spot to spot around the Level Shoe District
For more on Most of their energy, for the time being, is focussed on launching I Don’t Get Yasmeen go on: Paid for This for release early next year in London, but not until the following www.yasmeenonline.com year in the US. Interestingly, Yasmeen and her team are on a mission to make it in London before taking on audiences across the Atlantic. ‘Even The Killers were really big in the UK before the US’. People in UK, they feel, have a higher appreciation than their American counterparts for new music and unique styles. They feel that radio stations in the US are constantly playing the mainstream Top 40, whereas British radio stations are much more open to new sounds and artists. ‘London, and the rest of the UK, they’re trend-setters. They really appreciate good music.’ It’s a clever observation, and one which will no doubt prove beneficial as they launch their album. Narrowing down a song selection sounds like no mean feat; over three and a half years the group have written sixty songs and from these they have the challenge of picking just ten. They have a saying: ‘You have to write a lot of good songs to get a great one’, and if a song doesn’t give them a certain feeling it won’t make the cut. She performed ‘Guns & Roses’ for VFDE and it was clear why they are so excited to include it; the emotional and soulful song was made even more striking by Yasmeen’s vocals. The team are ambitious and motivated, but above all personable and an absolute pleasure to meet. We have them pegged as ones to watch, so watch this space! Their music definitely leaves an impression and if you were lucky enough to catch the performance we are sure you will agree. by

Album Reviews Katy Perry Prism Prism is Katy’s most mature record to date; she finally seems to have found her trademark sound that made Teenage Dream so popular and long-lasting (two years in the charts is a huge achievement). Starting off with ‘Roar’, Prism is a classic pop record with synthesized beats and catchy chorus lyrics. There is a song for everyone, ‘This Is How We Do’ is a sequel of ‘TGIF’ while ‘Birthday’ is a typical summer tune, or by Dubai standards, a fall/winter tune. Katy also experiments with sound and delivers what could only be described as an homage to the 90’s: ‘Walking On Air’. Her other diverse track is ‘Dark Horse’, which takes a more hip-hop approach featuring Juicy J. When it comes to vocals, Katy’s performance is well-structured and shows her ever-so-polished range while leaving an impression of the singer being comfortable in her scope. In the end, Prism is the best album Katy has delivered so far; it’s mature, wellwritten (especially noticeable in ‘Spiritual’ and ‘By the Grace Of God’) and an excellent record for a party, road trip or everyday commute to work or school.
Miley Cyrus Bangerz It’s taken her a total makeover, tons of criticism and three years to come out with Bangerz, and oh, was it all worth the wait. The record starts off with a smooth yet powerful ‘Adore You’ where Miley declares her unconditional love for someone and showing off the soulful side of her vocals. This track is especially reminiscent of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Lotus Intro’ from last year. Following the smooth intro, next up are the hits like ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ as well as the much-talked about ‘SMS(Bangerz)’, a duet with none other than the pop icon Britney Spears. Generally, Bangerz feels like a rich pop record with lots of diverse tracks that will fit pretty much any occasion. ‘#GETITRIGHT’, a track produced by Pharell Williams, is fun and easy-going while ‘Do My Thang’ has a hint of dubstep and is perfect as a party starter. In the end, Miley did a great job at brushing off her old image and creating something unique of her own. Many might not agree with her hairstyle or shocking outfits, however all should give this album a try.
Justin Timberlake The 20/20 Experience: Part 2 of 2 The sound of Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience: Part 2 of 2 is immediately reminiscent of his hugely successful predecessor of seven years ago Future S**/Love Songs; but this time there’s something missing. None of the songs struck me as particularly memorable. They are all a little too consistent, few, if any, have that upbeat, sing-along quality which was so prevalent in his earlier work. While the sounds and beats were familiar, and undoubtedly similar to Future S**/Love Songs, they didn’t live up to the panache of songs from his earlier albums, or indeed even the hit collaborations he has released since (I’m thinking ‘4 Minutes’). ‘TKO’ comes closest, but, like ‘Take Back the Night’, it is let down by its length. The tracks all go on just that little bit too long with songs averaging a length of six minutes. Familiar sounds and a cohesive album isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but early on Part 2 of 2 begins to sound tired and a little monotonous. The album isn’t terrible, but its flaws mean it falls slightly short of the qualities which made Future S**/Love Songs such a success and doesn’t quite deliver on the indisputably cool and smooth style which we expect from the good old JT of the noughties and nineties.

BBM, BlackBerry’s key service, is now available for Android and iOS. Had this happened back in 2008, the world would go crazy. Now? Not as much. Although over ten million non-BB users have already downloanded the app, it is still too early to call it a success. The UI of the app is more of a skin rather than an OS-specific application.

WWE Live in Abu Dhabi
“The audience showed that Daniel Bryan was the favourite by yelling “YES” each time he was pinned down, motivating him to stand up and fight back” Favouritism was truly seen in the matches fought in this event. Rybak made a special appearance on the big screen, taunting the Abu Dhabi audience: “My love for money outweighs my distain for each and every one of you”. Of course this was widely met with a lot of taunting and booing from the audience themselves and an especially loud cheer for Kofi Kingston who would be fighting Rybak later on in the event. Fandango and Santino Marella entered the ring and a fan’s choice competition was announced by the host: a choice between a fight or dance off. The most obvious and hilarious choice was, of course, a dance off. Fandango showed off some intricate dance moves, his hips shaking and his body flowing to the rhythm of tango music, while Santino Marella much resembled a tone-deaf person. The obvious favourite was Santino as the crowd shouted out an overwhelming “yes”. Fandango, less than pleased, got angry and began to hit Santino. After an intricate orchestra of hits and kicks, Santino managed to get up and fight back. Santino won the round, a resounding cheer following him as he left the ring. An addition to the well played out story line was that Big Show was fired and not allowed to participate in the tag team match between The Miz, Dolph Ziggler and The Shield (Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns). The seven foot (2.1 Meter) giant wrestler retreated backstage after being told “You are going to be sitting ring side for the main event between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan”. On the 10th 11th and 12th of October, WWE Live made an impressive performance in the Sports Zayed City Tennis stadium. Big names such as Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, Big Show, the Miz, The Shield, Kofi Kingston and Rybak all made an appearance in an epic battle for championship titles such as WWE Champion, WWE Tag Team Champion and United States Champion. writing by Aaricia Kimberly van Ommen photos by ANGELI CASTILLO
As the Miz and Dolph Ziggler entered the ring, The Shield descended from between the crowd towards the main arena and drove the entire stadium wild. The Miz and Dolph attempted the same thing with success as they threw their shirts towards the audience. After a battle of kicking, hitting, flipping each other over and rope jumping on top of their opponent, The Miz and Dolph Ziggler won by disqualification. The third member of The Shield party (Dean Ambrose) entered the ring and attempted to beat the duo with a chair. The main event drew near and Randy Orton made a slow walking entrance towards the ring, basking in the cheering of the crowd. Daniel Bryan entered at a much quicker pace and enjoyed the same treatment from his fans. The two began an intense fight, forcing the opponent out of the ring. The audience showed that Daniel Bryan was the favourite by yelling “YES” each time he was pinned down, motivating him to stand up and fight back against Randy Orton. In the end, Daniel Bryan was announced the winner to deafening cheers and the crowd left having thoroughly enjoyed the show. Two words: total smackdown!
Gulf Bike Week There was something for everyone: top of the range bikes from classics such as Indian Motorcycle, Harley Davidson and BMW Motorrad, alongside understated retro Vespas, and the latest in off-roading and water-skiing. There were also ranges of biking-wear and stands offering bike tours around Hatta, Oman and other locations in the UAE. In short: a biker’s dream! One particular show-stealer was a Lauge Jensen, completely covered and hand finished with 24-carat gold leaf (859 individually gold-plated parts assembled by hand); with more than 260 gems (a total of over 8 carat diamonds) set in solid gold and finished with a crocodile skin seat. The event was also fun and entertaining for families. Taking place in Media City, there was live musical entertainment from local rock bands, including the successful local band Juliana Down who delivered a great performance to a lively crowd. With picnic benches surrounding the main stage and refreshment vendors the event was lively and social, and the cooling weather provided the perfect setting for an evening of perusing bikes and meeting other keen bikers. There were also impressive daily shows from flair riders and street bike stunt riders who awed onlookers with their impressive stunts and tricks. There was a great variety of interactive activities, too: a mini skating track for youngsters to try out their skills on razor scooters as well as various bikes for the public to try for size. As someone less knowledgeable about the bike world, I must admit to being tempted by some of the state-of-the-art vehicles on show. All in all a great event, enough to get anyone excited about starting a new hobby in the world of biking, off-roading and anything in between! writing by

Abu Dhabi Film Festival
On the 24th of October, Abu Dhabi Film Festival opened its doors to the public once more to begin their screening of a selection of films from all over the world, nine of which were by Arabic film makers.
The seventh annual year that ADFF has been running started with an intense opening night. Noted guests arrived via the red carpet and entered the Palace Hotel cinema for its opening film: Life of Crime by director Daniel Schechter. One of the main characters, Mark Boone Junior, also made an appearance on stage along with Daniel Schechter at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival where he was showered in compliments for his performance. Following Mark Boone Junior was Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, who did not show in the movie Life of Crime, but did win the Career Achievement Award for his excellent performances in movies such as Out of the Furnace, The Butler and Repo Man. Forest Whitaker began his speech by announcing “I am honored to be here”, and continued by singing a Sura from the Holy Qur’an. The second person to win the Career Achievement Award was Hiam Abbass, who unfortunately did not make it to the opening evening but is famous for movies such as Every Day Is A Holiday, Inheritance and The Source. The award categories for ADFF were separated into: Narrative Feature; New Horizons; Documentary Feature; Short Film; Emirates Film, and Child Protection Award.
For more on Abu Dhabi Film Festival go on: www.abudhabifilmfestival.ae
Each Category had a panel of judges made up of five people: one president and four jurors. The presidents were Jackie Weaver, Yesmin Ustaglu, Cameron Bailey, Mohamad Malas, Ahmed Rachedi and Khaled Abol Naga. The movie Life of Crime seemed a success amongst those invited. The buzz outside the cinema doors were ablaze and comments such as “Great movie” and “Jennifer Aniston did a great job” could easily be overheard. The film Life of Crime is an adaption of a book by famous novelist Elmore Leonard, which is a story that takes Stockholm Syndrome into an awry direction. Set in 1978, it stars two small town thieves who see an opportunity to get a million dollars by kidnapping Mickey (Jennifer Aniston) in order to extort money from her husband. Drama ensues and not everything goes according to plan. The movie was comical with dramatic undertones.

The opening night party after the film was an impressive sight to see. Purple and blue lights were cast over one of the many Palace Hotel gardens and food as well as entertainment was in abundance for the guests. Many of the guests were not sure which was better, the movie or the party, though all agreed that it was a fantastic night and ADFF had a very successful event on their hands.

Fashion Forward Season Two by romina hashemi
Whenever you enter new societies, the key to blending in is: “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”. However, when Fashion Forward Season 2 started - fashion expo a la Dubai - people did everything but... and we loved every moment of it. As all Dubai darling divas know- Fashion Forward includes numerous catwalk presentations from top regional designers, plus inspiring talks and panel discussions led by global industry experts and fashion academia, as well as entertainment, through a string of social events and parties. We were not surprised to meet a crowded pack of excited fashion-enthusiasts, ‘glamazonian’ models and local designers strutting their way through the red-carpet entrance of the event. The moment you walked in soft house music welcomed you and a string of stylists stood around in queues, dressed to the nines and bragging about the event through their array of social media networks while on their way to the next fabulous haute couture show or expert-hosted workshop. A mixture of fashionalities intermingled: the professional chic, the bizarrely baroque and the ever-popular recessionista- all expressing their own subtle, or eccentric, personal quirks through the region’s trademark showstopping style. The underlying theme of the extravaganza was to celebrate fashion from the hottest metropolitan city in the world: Dubai. Some of the staple pieces we spotted were jewel necklines and square-pleated skirts in colours celebratory of the approaching fall season. Oxblood boyfriend blazers and mint green gauchos were effortlessly worn by the Gulf’s Glitterati- along with pairings of leopard print jeans and playful neon kitten heels! You know, the usual… Similar to the guests, the shows reflected the mixture of the fashionistas that flocked to see them. There was an array of both directional and thematic shows; each lying within a large spectrum that had everything from haute couture to the classically contemporary. The derivative shows, that included the works of Zayan the Label and Dina JSR, featured a common trend of strait-laced floral dresses, sequined a-line skirts and bold bolero jackets. Whereas, the haute couture shows, which included Amato by Furne One and Essa presented by Grazia ME, introduced trends that took the Dubai fashion audience by storm; showing off eccentrically designed gowns and baby doll dresses. These were styled with layers of tulle trailing behind each gown and bright prints. The styling created a shocking contrast to the season’s usual show of a darker and more reserved sartorial selection shown in the previous season of FFWD. Meanwhile, in ‘The Garden’ local boutiques and stores were set up to give the masses an outlet to shop to their hearts’ desires. The most interesting to youth among the glamorous goods on display were the Arcadian Apparel graphic tees which featured cool and contemporary prints focused on Dubai and Emirati culture. For four nights the region’s fashion enthusiasts socialised outside beneath the starry night sky and the bright flashing spotlights of FFWD, applauding shows and complimenting each other’s style choices. This was Season 2, and we can’t wait for Season 3!

Teens talk was created to empower and assist teenagers (13-17) and parents alike. It has become apparent that teenagers within the region have become discouraged from sharing their thoughts and ideas, almost as though the youth of the UAE “don’t have a voice”. Although the majority of teenagers and parents have friends and peers they can turn to, it is sometimes hard to reach out to the ones we love in order to ask for help or advice. This is where Teens Talk becomes a great tool for teenagers and parents of the UAE.

“Even through all this negativity I was able to achieve a lot... Not to stop and not to quit is what I believe in
Nahla Al Rostamani
The first Emirati female Formula1 driver and the first certified race timekeeper, Nahla Al Rostamni, is a lady driven by her passion. Ever since the keys to her first car were handed to her at the age of 18, she knew that her place was behind the wheel. Absolutely no one can stop Nahla on her biggest race to increase the popularity of motorsports amongst the women in the UAE. Why did you decide to become a licensed race car driver? The funny thing is, I never decided! Dubai Autodrome had called me to try a couple of their cars so that I could gain experience on the race track and, seeing my passion, they nominated me to go to Bahrain where I was able to apply for a racing license. This was when it dawned upon me that I could actually obtain a racing license! In Bahrain the test lasted three days and it was intense with heavy training and me being the only female among seventeen men, but that didn’t stop me from obtaining my license. It was a coincidence because I never thought it would be possible, and my passion on the tracks motivated me to take my dream up a notch and helped me get my licence. How did your friends and family react to your decision? My family was extremely supportive. My brother was against it though, stating that the world we live in is more of a man’s world. My family, however, was always willing to help me with anything related to my passion. My friends have supported me as well but I have lost a couple of them trying to follow my dream as a few of them were against what I was doing. I do not blame them because these notions were developed through the culture and style that they were brought up in. They believed that a females’ place was to stay at home, and did not want to continue a friendship when I was so involved with racing. I was upset, but I definitely respected their opinion as racing was my passion and not theirs. That was in the beginning but now I have so many friends and even strangers who are highly supportive and encouraging of what I do. What challenges did you face being a female racer in the Gulf? I have been racing for eight years now and every day is a challenge trying to showcase my passion. It is especially challenging now as I try to move ahead with my dreams in motorsports. I come from a country that is extremely attached to its culture and tradition and in the beginning they thought I was insulting it by going against the norm. When I did face negativity it was highly challenging for me to show that I was not insulting the culture in any way, but trying to break free from the social norms in a respectable manner. I had to prove to society that I loved my job and that anyone can do this sport and still embrace the traditional culture. Furthermore, it was challenging to break away from prejudices, being a woman, and I wanted to show them that I am capable of racing and that anyone can do it if they set their mind to it.

Cover Story
What does the rush feel like when you are racing? One word: CRAZY! The time I went to Bahrain and had to race against seventeen men was intense. Once you start racing you don’t think about anything else because the adrenaline and speed just engulf you. By the end of the day I was awarded the best driver amongst all those men. I enjoy what I do. All I wanted to do was race. I love cars and that’s just it. You’re one of the first licensed female Emirati race drivers and the first Emirati woman time-keeper. What does that accomplishment feel like? For me to have these accomplishments, I am very proud. I am also the only Emirati woman to acquire the sports license. To obtain these licenses is strenuous. For example to obtain my time-keeping licence I had to take part in a number of races within a span of two years and one of the races that had to be completed was the 24 hour race which was very taxing; but for me to accomplish it then made me really proud and it helped me realise I was capable, and that if I put my mind to something I am passionate about, I can achieve it. What advice would you give to our readers in terms of pursuing their own dreams? What made you not give up on yours? Whoever has a dream to do something has to stick to it. If you believe in yourself and know that you are passionate about this dream, do not give up. No matter what people say, no matter what negativity you may have to face, do not listen to anything; instead use the negativity to boost yourself and prove to people that you will still do what you believe in. Throughout my career I have had many people who tried to put me down and I have gotten upset, but between me and myself, I say “NO”; I will challenge them and I will keep doing what I love. Even through all this negativity I was able to achieve a lot within my field and currently I am the deputy circuit manager and just a step away from becoming a circuit manager. I have left people in awe with all that I have been able to accomplish at this age and, furthermore, I was able to break away from the typical stereotypes placed on young women. Not to stop and not to quit is what I believe in. Many people are often surprised when they hear about female drivers, especially someone like you who has balanced her interests so well with her culture. What do you have to say to that? In the beginning it was very hard to try and balance everything. Being half local and having been brought up in a family that is open minded, I have been raised and taught in a different way. However, I have to be cautious and resepctful with
anything I do in this job and I have to ponder my decisions sometimes because I represent the UAE and I do not want to insult the country in any way. That is why I do have to balance everything with the way I dress, talk and present myself as a whole. Focus is highly important because one tends to forget the rules occasionally and I do not want to give off the wrong image, especially when I am representing my own country. What are your plans for the future? Do you wish to continue time-keeping or do you have other plans? I have been time-keeping for around six years now and I would never stop doing it because I love it. Even if I become a circuit manager in the future, I would still do timing as part of my job. I aim to become a race director one day which I will hopefully achieve. At the moment I am focusing on making my dreams of becoming a circuit manager a reality by working really hard and by always trying to keep myself involved with anything to do with the circuit: the drivers, registration, track inspection etc. Whatever position I may be in I will still always be involved with anything related to motorsports. What does a day in the life of Nahla Al Rostamani look like? I am a workaholic. Being at work 24/7 means that I am deprived of a social life. I am always shuffling back and forth between my work and family, as they are my priority. Some of the things I do at work are checking the tracks, checkingthe motors, making sure everything runs smoothly and if we have a race, we prepare for it. Living in Dubai and having to work in Abu Dhabi, by the time I get back I am exhausted, but I always spend time with my family and make sure I am prepared for another exciting day at work. This is how my day-to-day life looks. If I have a holiday I would just prefer to chill simply because what I do is tiring and to have a day off and be at home is wonderful. You really have to make a decision as to whether you would like to stick to your passion or enjoy a social life, but there will always be something missing if you choose the latter. I took up the challenge to sacrifice my social life to follow my dreams. The most important thing is that I am able to see my family and friends from time to time, but for me to quit racing is not an option as it is where my heart lies. Being an Emirati, Nahla Al Rostamani had to face challenges trying to pursue her dreams. As an individual, she wants to pave a way for other Emirati women who are trying to follow their own dreams and Nahla successfully showcases that if she can do it, anyone can.

They say the best camera is the one you have with you, and this is what Nokia is betting on with its flagship Lumia 1020. Up until now, the top three most popular cameras on flickr were iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 with iPhone 4S taking the top spot; however Nokia hopes to claim the throne with this 41 megapixel sensor monster. More about the camera: PureView is what it is called and it utilises a floating lens, which means the lens components literally move around as the phone is held in hand to reduce any possibility of a blurred result. While the camera is absolutely outstanding in bright and darker environments, there are few shortages with this phone, mainly its software. Lumia, as its other siblings, runs Windows Phone 8, which is a far cry from the OS’ of giants like Android and iOS. Indeed, WP has come a long way since its inception, but not far enough to get you to switch from Android or iOS. Even with the recent announcement of the Instagram and Facebook official apps arriving in the Windows Store shortly, the app ecosystem is still not mature enough to compete with iOS and Android at the moment.
Nokia Lumia 1020
The software especially feels difficult to use when trying to take advantage of the amazing lens this phone comes with. There are more options and tweaks than on any other smartphone, however, the interface of the camera is difficult to use from the start and one ends up sticking to automatic and default settings when using the Nokia Pro Cam. In the end, with its beautiful matte-felt shell and astonishing camera lens, Lumia 1020 is the best device Nokia has built to date; however, Lumia still feels like it’s being held back by Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8. by

“that’s the good thing about art, you get to alter reality”
LG G2 A frighteningly powerful and deceptively playful device, the G2 is a serious competition to the 2013 flagships seen thus far. This feels like LG finally made a (non-Nexus) smartphone that ticks all the boxes: LTE, 1080p screen, NFC and a potent processor, but, while it may seem like another gargantuan phone in the post 5-inch era, the G2 has more than a few quirks which stops it from being more of the same.
The device looks sleek and smooth: the front has the usual assembly of sensors and speakers and lacks any controls. The lack of buttons extends to the sides with the usual phone lock and volume buttons being located round the back. The button placement didn’t take much time to get used to and was more convenient to use, especially during calls. The G2 feels just as premium as any top-tier despite having an all plastic back. It looks good but it is worryingly slippery, especially after extended use. The crisp IPS 1080p LCD display is stunning, most of the time. While colours do pop and contrast is good, it is highly over-saturated and many apps (like Candy Crush) resemble regurgitated neon rainbows. Despite resembling a circus make up cabinet, the display is brilliantly lucid even in the harshest of Dubai sun. Powering your Angry Birds, Candy Crush and twitter apps is a behemoth 2.26GHz quad core processor and 2 gigs of RAM; this phone does not know slow. It breezed through everything and anything I threw at it without so much as a hiccup. With its OS, LG has not opted for the flatness and starkness currently in vogue amongst most of its competitors. There are many customisation options which are welcomed, like the ability to select the layout of Android on-screen buttons. The G2 has an interesting, windowed smart cover. The back of the cover looks identical the back of the device and retains the sleek feel. It’s the front where things get a little awry; the cover I had didn’t seem to close properly and hovered in the air above the device on one side. The window allows for a quick glance at the time, the weather or your music but it doesn’t play well with third party apps. The stand out feature and quite easily the most simplistic of them all would definitely be “Knock On”: simply tap the screen twice to wake the phone. It is so intuitive and natural that I found myself knocking on other devices expecting a reaction. “Guest Mode” allows you to show off your device to your nosy friends without them seeing any of your private data or apps. With its innumerable settings and options; unique and intuitive button placement; wondrously speedy processor and smorgasbord of features that are actually useful, the G2 could easily be the best Android smartphone available at the moment.

Canon Powershot SX500 IS The first thing you notice when you pick up this camera is the size of its lens and the weight. The 30 x 24-720mm lens is fully attached to the body, only 10.2 cm deep and weighs only 340 g (including the battery) making it perfectly portable. by sofia fernandez vyas
Competition Alert!
However, the second thing I noticed was its unsuitability for low-light and action shots (despite its flash). I found that in low light even the slightest movement resulted in a blurry shot, which meant its excellent zoom capacity was less useful. This improved significantly in areas with brighter light, but even then I still had problems photographing fast movement and capturing a photograph which was not blurry. This being said, its colour balance was generally very good, and photographing stationary scenes in low light came out with low levels of noise and sharp, defined colours. Shooting outdoors, or in any environment with good lighting, is ideal for this camera and, in those cases, results will be pleasing. Canon claims that the camera has improved focusing and shutter speed, but lag is still noticeable, especially when taking photos in quick succession. The autofocus and zoom work very well, as does its 720p video recorder. Zooming while recording is smooth and easy although a slight mechanical noise will be audible.

to win this awesome new Ultraslim Seagate 500GB hard drive.
Rather that using HS CMOS sensors and a newer, more powerful, Digic5 processor, Canon opted for a 16-megapixel CCD sensor and a Digic4. Overall, this means that the camera has a good zoom lens, but slower performance, less shooting options and the need for a lot of light or long exposure to get the best results; but makes the camera more affordable and portable.

To Kill a Mockingbird Author: Harper Lee Known as one of the greatest works of American literature, To Kill a Mockingbird is a sympathetic, melancholic and life-changing book. It uses humour and tragedy to explore the origin of human behaviour through the understanding of innocence, compassion and brutality. The book is set during the Great Depression, before the Civil Rights Movement, in America and is seen through the eyes of five year old Scout. Living and growing up in a small town in the South, Jem and Scout Finch feel they know their family and neighbours. In the beginning, they start hearing rumors that an African-American man has been accused of assaulting a white woman. During the 1930s in Alabama, a place where racism played a large role, her accusation was proof of his guilt. Atticus, the young boys’ father and hero as well as the accused man’s lawyer, interrogates the charges and tries to defend the accused in a prejudiced town full of assumptions. As Scout and Jem try to understand the reactions of the citizens in the town, and make sense of a world falling apart around them, the absurdity of racism is shown, unembellished. This classic is definitely worth a read.
The Great Gatsby Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby is one of my favourite classics of all time. When we hear the word “classic”, the first thing that comes to our mind is “boring”. I’ll admit I was the same. That was, until I read The Great Gatsby. This book gives a thoughtful insight into America after the Great Depression and moved me to tears towards the end. F. Scott Fitzgerald paints a picture that is both beautiful and tragic, and filled with romance and an air of mystery. The book is written from the perspective of Nick Carraway, a Yale graduate who moves to New York and resides near the enigmatic and mysterious millionaire, Jay Gatsby. Nick describes the world he both belongs to and feels completely isolated from. Every Saturday, Gatsby throws a party in his mansion where all the rich and the fashionable are invited. Jay Gatsby appears to be the perfect man as he had one thing desired above all else in this society: money. However, he is not satisfied, and Nick finds out why. He learns that Gatsby fell in love with a young woman, Daisy, a long time ago and is doing everything in his power to get her back; but Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan and thus follows one of the greatest stories of unrequited love of all time. Using a myriad of poignant metaphors, vibrant description and ominous foreshadowing, Fitzgerald’s prose is beautifully crafted and absolutely unforgettable.

Keegan Shepherd Keegan Shepherd, a Repton School graduate, makes wonderful, layered art. It is modern, abstract and energetic, and we wanted to find out more about what inspires him, and how he creates his intriguing work. How long have you been creating artwork? I started doing art the first time I encountered the subject in school, around the age of 12. Ever since I have been learning and creating artworks. Where do you get your inspiration? I get my inspiration from all over: researching certain artists I find interesting, or from travelling which I really enjoy, among many other things. I have a particular interest in street art. Although it is not the type of art I currently make there are many aspects of it in my work. I also like modern art and abstract art so I get inspiration from artists like Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Barbara Kruger, Paul Hoban, Basquiat and loads more. How long does it take you to create each piece? A piece can take from one week to even two months depending on how I feel about it and whether I think it is finished or not. What techniques do you usually use? I do abstract art so I adopt a large variety of techniques. I’ve found that abstract art allows loads of room for experimenting, and I’ve used techniques from traditional painting to printing tracks with a car tyre. I do other things like a mosaic with newspaper or spray-painting. I like to layer my painting and basically go over it again and again adding to it as I go along. I like using all sorts of objects that have different shapes and textures. I fix these objects to my artwork or use them to print on a canvas. What is your favourite aspect of creating artwork? I love the freedom it gives you to create whatever you want and all the experimenting involved with creating a new piece. I also enjoy simply creating a visually pleasing piece, but also ones which have a deeper meaning. Is art just a hobby for you, or would you like to pursue it as a career? Ever since I started art at school, when I was quite young, it has grown on me as a hobby. I would really love to make a career out of simply creating art but it’s tough out there making it as an artist. I’m studying design at the moment in order to become a graphic designer so art will never be far off from what I’m doing, and I will hopefully also continue to make art on the side. by

The word ‘Africa’ is frequently associated with a number of prejudicial assumptions. The nature of these assumptions is often associated with words such as ‘poverty’, ‘hunger’ and ‘danger’. This is a rather unfortunate and untrue belief.
When nine of my friends and I landed in Kampala, Uganda, on the 21st of June we had no idea what to expect. An hour later, we were in the heart of a vibrant and dynamic city with an electric atmosphere, reminding me of the streets of Karachi, and other cities of India and Bali. The roads were busy with motorbikes, some mounted by three people or more at one time. Whenever our little matatu (minibus) stopped at a traffic light we were met by an army of street food vendors shouting “Mzungo!” and holding skewered pieces of cooked meat and something called ‘rolex’ (eggs rolled in chapatti bread – ‘rolled eggs’ – get it?) at our open windows. What struck us most about this city is difficult to describe: there was an underlying beauty behind what at first appeared to be a rather chaotic atmosphere. Looking back now, the chaos we first observed was not chaos at all, but rather our difficulty to grasp how this city was so different to the world we were accustomed to; it was so much more alive. A day later we embarked on a seven hour bus journey through breathtaking scenery to Kilembe Valley in Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains. A shallow and narrow river flowed through the valley, dividing it in half, with small houses dotted across either side, making up Kilembe Village. Upon our arrival we learned that this seemingly harmless river had, six weeks ago, ripped apart houses, lifting them from their foundations as well as destroying roads in a devastating flood. Six had been killed and many more left without homes. We trekked through the valley, walking past the damage and debris along the river. The crumpled and distorted remains of a steel bridge lay discarded by the river bank while the other half remained attached to the ground above. We crossed the river via a bridge made from wooden logs by the locals and made our way up the mountain to the primary school where we would be staying for the next week. Masule Primary School consisted of three narrow and long structures with clay brick walls and slanted, corrugated steel roofs, two of which were unfinished. There were six classrooms; two in each building, inside each one was a chalkboard which spanned the width of the room and around five rows of small wooden desks, the surfaces of which were plastered with the children’s graffiti. Outside was an uneven and grassy playground on which the three hundred children who attended the school played football and cricket. I am still amazed by the children we met. Their energy, passion and enthusiasm towards learning was incredible. They arrived at the school at eight in the morning the day after our arrival, most of them in a dark blue and yellow uniform, although some could not afford it, and they all wore no shoes. They welcomed us with dances and songs; each was filled with vim and vigor. The tiny classroom was overflowing with excitement (and people) as we watched and they performed each dance. Throughout the week we were in classrooms teaching them Math and English, however, I began each class I taught by telling them about where we came from. This information was met with an array of questions, which I struggled to answer. I was asked where we get our food from and, as I began to explain the concept of a supermarket, I watched their awestruck faces as they realised that we did not grow our food in our back gardens and did not walk to a river to collect water. I then tried to explain the concept of a building when I was asked where we live. After my pathetic failure at drawing a diagram, I resorted to telling them to imagine fifty of their school buildings stacked on top of each other. It was after having to explain the simplest aspects of the lives we live to these children, things that we don’t think twice about but yet the very idea of them to the children was shocking and unreal, that I realised the scale of how simple the lives they lived were. In spite of this, there was not a single moment during our week at Masule when I saw a child who looked the slightest bit unhappy. These children had close to nothing, most couldn’t even afford their ten dollar per term educations, and yet they were always smiling. When we think of children in similar situations to them, it is often our instinctive reaction to pity. We automatically assume they must be miserable, but these children were living proof that happiness does not lie in the amount of money we earn and the things we buy. They were proof that happiness lies beyond objects – it lies within the way we live our lives.

Gym-boree by
Asma alabed
For most people, the idea of going to the gym is not appealing. You know you should be working out, but after a long day of school or work lounging on a sofa with snacks and your favourite TV show is just too tempting. Before you know it your healthy plan has transformed into an urgent need for damage control, and the realisation that those extra pounds won’t shed themselves slowly dawns. Maybe you don’t want to lose weight but have been meaning to bulk up and get back into shape. Either way, girl or guy, before you hit the gym here’s what you need to know .
Research! Yeah, we know. Research is for school, not for the gym, but before you start a crash diet or the Insanity workout, talk to a doctor. Different bodies need a different amount of nutrients and a new exercise routine should fit those needs. Pace yourself … you won’t look like The Situation overnight.
Gym shyness Don’t be intimidated by the machinery at the gym, and don’t be intimidated by the guy who can bench more than you. You’re sweating, so what? So is everyone around you. Stay focused on why you’re there and if you don’t know how to use a machine – ask. Chances are someone was just as lost as you and will be willing to help.
Commitment Working out for five hours once a week isn’t as effective as going a few times a week for an hour or two. Commit to the gym for a set amount of time, on a certain day at around the same time, and stick to it, Make it your priority instead of something you’ll do “when you feel like it”. This will keep you motivated and you’ll see results faster than you know it.
Warm Up There’s nothing worse than stunting your workout by pulling a muscle. Stretches that don’t last for 15 seconds are useless so make sure you stretch for the right amount of time. But remember, stretches aren’t everything. Low-cardio warm up exercises are just as important. Target the muscles in your body that you’ll be using most.
Water, water and more water Bring your own water bottle and make sure you stay hydrated the entire way throughout your workout. Pause to take sips and protect your muscles from cramping up. The oxygen in the water will help prevent your muscles from contracting and will keep them in tip-top shape.
Eat well Never go to the gym on an empty stomach. Carbs are the main source of your body’s fuel and are necessary for more intense workouts. Make sure to eat something carb-filled before you work out, like a sandwich or if you’re opting for a protein shake throw in a banana. Remember, shakes are best right before your work out and right after.
Soda
Did you know:
regularly drinking soda increases can increase your weight gain and your risk of diabetes? You probably know that soda is not healthy, but did you realise just how harmful to your health the ingredients can be?
by
sofia fernandez vyas
The risks of sugary soda
Harmful ingredients
You also probably know that most soda is extremely high in sugar, but just how high? A regular 335ml can of Coca-Cola contains a whole 39 grams of sugar, and the same sized can of Doctor Pepper contains a whopping 64 grams! Studies have shown that women who increased their consumption of soft drinks from no more than one drink per week to at least one drink per day had the highest weight gain during a 4-year period and had a significantly higher risk of developing type-2 diabetes than women who drank less than one soft drink per month. A review of several studies indicated that the risk of developing type-2 diabetes for those regularly drinking soda could be as much as 26 percent higher than those who consumed the least.
Phosphoric acid is an ingredient which, as well as being associated with kidney stones and kidney disease, can be found in sodas like Cola. A study from 2010 found that individuals who consumed two or more cola drinks each day had a significantly higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease than individuals who drank non-sugary drinks. Another harmful ingredient in soda is brominated vegetable oil (the name alone sounds suspicious), which is found in Mountain Dew. In his article, “Iodine: If this is not enough to put you off, sodas Why You Need it, Why You Can’t Live can increase your risk of developing Without it,” Doctor David Brownstein heart disease by as much as 20 percent explained that bromine negatively more than those who stay away from affects the thyroid by competing with sugary drinks. They can cause higher iodine in the body, and is thought to be levels of artery-clogging triglycerides in a potential cause of breast cancer. A the blood. Specifically, women who drank study which analyzed rats that were two or more sweetened beverages a day given bromine found that the rats had had a 35 percent higher risk of heart increased fatty content around, and disease than women who drank less than experienced cell death in, their hearts. It one sweetened beverage per month. also caused damage to their livers, enlarging them and increasing fat.
57 Diet soda
You may think that diet soda is a healthy alternative to high calorie, sweetened soda. Unfortunately this is not the case. Most diet sodas are sweetened with an artificial sweetener called aspartame. Aspartame has been linked to the development of cancer through a 2006 study which found that both male and female rats that were given aspartame were more likely to develop cancer. The rats were given a dose of just 20mg per kilo of body weight per day; a dose lower than the average daily intake of 50 mg per kilo of body weight typically consumed by people in the United States. So next time you’re reaching for a tempting, cold can of soda, go for water instead. It will quench your thirst; help maintain your fluid balance; help keep your skin and your kidneys healthy and will not cause diabetes, heart disease or any other kind of health problem. Step away from the soda. You’ll thank us for it later.

Fall out Q. I recently fell out with one of my close friends and now she is spreading horrible rumours about me. I’m worried that I’ll lose more friends if people think the things are true. How can I talk to her about it before things get worse?
Dear Reader, It is so difficult to fall out with friends. Especially when, as students, your friends can be your ‘safe space’ in a large school. I don’t want to walk over your feelings, but I do want to introduce you to the concept that there are three views to every friendship. I encourage you to reflect on the friendship, remember the highs and the lows of it through the time that you have been in friendship. Then, remember the heated issue, ‘the falling out’ that you both experienced. Put it in your mind and write down all the points from your perspective. What hurt you? What angered you? What disappointed you? What do you wish could have been different? Then do the same but through the eyes of your friend. What was her perspective? Answer all the same questions that you asked yourself. Finally, look at both sheets in front of you and on the final sheet, look through the eyes of your friendship. If your friendship had a voice what answers would it give to those same questions? What is the perspective of your friendship? Remember, there is nothing wrong with disagreeing with a friend, it is how you react to each other and how you behave with each other that will strengthen or weaken your special bond. My final suggestion is an important one that will serve you in your life. Ask yourself this question: “Who in my life is a person whose opinion REALLY matters to me?” Your list will be very small and it is the guiding light that will take you through your friendships throughout your life. If your friend is on this list, I believe that you will want to try to mend any difficulties that you may have attributed to your friendship. Apologies are vital and the structure to a solid apology goes like this: “I’m sorry for what I have said/done. I’m sorry that I have hurt you. What can I do to mend our friendship?” Apologies are difficult to give but wonderful to receive if they are offered without blaming or defending one’s behaviour. Remember, the only people that matter in the large scale of your life are those special people on your list. Keep it a private list that only your eyes see. The other girls or guys at school that may listen to gossip and spread more gossip do not matter. Just like yourself, they are trying to fit into peer social groups.
Exams stress Q. I have important exams coming up at the end of this year, and I’m finding the work
really stressful. I keep getting completely overwhelmed because I don’t know where to start and then I don’t get anything done at all and feel even worse. How can I stop myself from falling behind? Dear Reader, Thank you for expressing this concern because it is one that is shared by many, if not all, students across the globe. Fear of exams is a big gremlin in a student’s life but it is just that, a gremlin; something that we create in our minds and allow to get larger and larger until, eventually, it becomes too big and it feels uncontrollable. I want to start by asking you to look ahead at your academic journey this year in smaller and much more manageable chunks. An effective strategy is one where you can break your year into sections that include: Short Term Deadlines: These include assignments that are due in the coming week; projects that may need team work now. Short term deadlines are like weekly objectives. You will complete these on a weekly basis. Medium Term Deadlines: Mid-term exams; end of term exams; end of term projects/assignments Long Term Deadlines: End of the year exams; end of the year projects/assignments Map these out on a calendar. I love creating ‘ginormous’ calendars that I can see at a quick glance and I post them on my walls. You can have fun with this part and get really creative. Map out the long term ones first, then the medium and finally the short. The long term objectives don’t change as they are usually defined by the regulating school/ university system. The medium are also usually very stable but they may change for uncontrolled circumstances. The short term deadlines will change regularly. You will add or delete in these sections. These are your weekly plans. My next suggestion is that you reach out to your university counsellor and ask for some guidance with school/life balance. They will be ready to advise you but, of course, they will also expect that you are trying effective ways to keep up with your deadlines. If your university doesn’t have a counsellor, reach out to a coach or mentor. These are the individuals who will keep you focused on your plan and help you move closer to achieving your goals rather than fearing them. Remember, fear of the unknown is a lot more painful and challenging than the actual action steps that help you achieve your goals. Stay focused, stay organised and take small actions every day and you will see success.
