Who Said Flying Is Impossible?

27-29 October 2015 Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre

"I wished I could stop time and relive that moment every single day of my life"

Whoever said flying is impossible clearly had no idea about iFly Dubai. Yes, flying is now possible thanks to iFly. Conveniently located at Mirdif City Centre, it is the ultimate experience for thrill seekers who would like to defy the laws of gravity with skill, style and, most importantly, courage. iFly Dubai is the world’s first double vertical wind tunnel. Its unique design also includes being raised three metres in the air with an instructor to guide you. Additionally, the wind tunnel is 10 metres tall with an acrylic glass wall. The state-of-the-art patented technology ensures a high degree of safety and accommodates all types of flyers from beginners to seasoned professionals. My experience as a first-time flyer was definitely memorable. I was guided to a training room with a video-based tutorial that explained various flying techniques and was introduced to my instructor and educated on the hand signals to adjust body positions inside the wind tunnel. After this I got geared up into a flight suit with a pair of goggles, helmet and earplugs. I watched the instructor give me a detailed demonstration and then I got

to enter the chamber. The instructor at iFly Dubai was very benevolent and patient with me because I panicked for a few seconds as it was kind of hard to breathe and the pressure was intense, unlike anything that I had ever experienced before. Trusting your instructor is very important because he or she will be the one guiding you and will aid in calming you. After a while, I got the hang of it and soared up into the air. All my worries about having difficulties breathing vanished and I felt like a free bird. I wished I could stop time and relive that moment every single day of my life. It was an exhilarating and one-of-a-kind experience. I mean, how many people get to say that they got to experience indoor skydiving? Honestly, I went in thinking it would be a one-time thing but I could definitely see myself going back. Agreeably, it is costly but it is definitely worth the amount. Safe for kids, challenging for adults, exciting for teens, and realistic for skydivers, the iFly Dubai experience will leave you smiling from cheek to cheek. by Ayesha Maqsood

We Are Vintage: Series I

We’ve decided to pair up and collaborate with one of our most appreciated knowledge sources when it comes to the automotive industry. Through this series, we aim to cover aspects of car influences in the region from rare exotics to classic modern vehicles to diplomatic characterised cars touching up on their transcendence from old times to today’s favourites.

Bedford is an English manufactured time-capsule truck, which is rarely ever seen on the roads among our high-rise towers and six-lane speedways but rather seen hidden in a shed only for the owner's eyes to see. This metal originated from Vauxhall Motors, which later collaborated with General Motors in the early 1900s and made its way to the Arab soil circa 1950 with the rise of oil. Their use incorporated the transportation of oil in the region as well as use on homegrown farms.

The Land Rover Defender is the more common vintage vehicle spotted on roads today, ranging from the four-door vehicle to the two-door. In the old days, the grandfathers of the nation used this vehicle by the sea, on the farms and in the deserts. With a dash of vintage and a whole lot of rugged, the Defender is one of the most gruelling cars to drive in the last 60 years. It made its debut in World War 2 and has since been the true definition of a moving piece of stubborn metal. The stereotypical image of the usual beige machinery is a Bedouin man driving along a barely paved track with the smell of diesel trailing behind – and that is the epitome of the Defender circa 1980.

Many have seen this truck and it’s enlarged sister at the Rainbow Sheikh’s Museum from Jeremy Clarkson himself to the many motoring enthusiasts in the search for exceptional metal. The story behind the Dodge Powerwagon stems back to the early 1950s, originally imported by Aramco in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, where they were used for oil transportation across the mighty dunes of the Arabian deserts. With the rise of economy in the region including the boom of Abu Dhabi within the oil industry circa 1970, the concept of driving a truck of this sort on the dirt roads of the Arabian Peninsula was common. If ever you were to question the ruler of the stream of American trucks, the Powerwagon falls under the title of superior, proving to be colossal, contributing to the vast development of trucks in today’s day and age.

The vehicle that resides most in the hearts of everyone who has been here long enough is the Toyota FJ Truck, famous for being a workhorse in the Middle East. Farmers, fishermen, and the common locals have used this vehicle for many years, be it for delivery of goods among towns or the love for the metal. This particular vehicle is still evident on todays roads in many different forms be it the mechanic transporting parts across the industrial areas of Dubai or the fishermen reeling in their nets on the beaches of Fujeirah at the crack of dawn while campers slept, or your uncommon car collector restoring it beneath a shed in his backyard. As is evident, it has transcended into a cultural characterisation and stands out with its unbendable structure.

Land Rovers, FJs and American trucks still hold a very strong influence in the car culture in the UAE. We are surrounded by sand and for that we build our perfect form of transportation. From luxury trucks, loaders, towers, racers, and dune bashers, everyone loves trucks. They are the highest form of utility, always convenient, and loved. by Miral Bushnaq & Khalid Al Qassemi

Tanesha Awasthi

What is your favourite skincare product? Sunscreen. I don't skimp on it and I always carry a mineral, colourless SPF powder in my car and in my bag to make sure that my skin is protected from the sun. What would you like to say to those girls who don't feel confident about their body image? Take it one step at a time! I struggled with body confidence for years, as well as eating disorders and excessive exercise. In the end, I learned to love my body one body part at a time, appreciating what my body has accomplished, especially after becoming a mom.

Meet Tanesha Awasthi, who is globally known for her blog, Girl With Curves. It is one of the world’s most influential fashion and beauty sites for plussized women. Through her blog, one can easily find great ideas on how to wear trendy pieces, styling tips, beauty tutorials, and a lot of motivation on how to be confident in your own skin. Our team had the opportunity to speak with the very gorgeous and lovely Awasthi, and to learn more about her personal style.

Website: girlwithcurves.com Facebook: GirlWithCurves Instagram: girlwithcurves Twitter: @girlwithcurves

What is your favourite shop? ASOS.com. They have an amazing selection of products, from casual to formal, bridal, accessories and shoes. What’s great about them is that they carry both straight and plus sizes. How do you get inspiration for your outfits? Most days I just wear what I like and what my mood calls for, unless it's a special occasion. Then I typically like to channel an old Hollywood star, like Audrey Hepburn or Sophia Loren.

"I stole my aunt's blush in the third grade and emerged from the bathroom with hot pink cheeks!"

What inspired you to start your own blog and YouTube channel? My husband suggested I start a blog after hearing me complain about being unfulfilled in my career in the tech industry. At the time, I had no idea what a style blog even was! Shortly after, I decided to expand and make my own videos, and that’s how we started the YouTube channel. When did you first start applying makeup? And what did you use? I started wearing makeup at a really young age because I watched my grandmother and aunt put on their makeup almost every morning. I think I stole my aunt's blush in the third grade and emerged from the bathroom with hot pink cheeks! Once I got the hang of makeup, though, I realised that less is more, and today my signature look is natural looking makeup with a bold lip.

Hallstatt, Austria

5fingers is a very popular attraction in the vicinity of the village. A cable car takes you up to the peak of a mountain and you can stand on a hand-shaped platform (hence its name) and absorb the spectacular view of the Alps and the lake. However, winds blew fiercely during my visit and I was not able to visit the peak. Apart from that, the Dachstein Ice Cave is located below the Dachstein plateau. Water seeps into the cave through tiny cracks and freezes to form perennial towering icicles. During the month of August, the Parsifal Dome inside the ice cave is transformed into a music concert hall, from classical to jazz music, amplified by the crystal clear ice structures. The village of Hallstatt is quite small and I was able to explore it on foot in just under an hour. We visited the Hallstatt Lutheran Church, which was situated at the heart of Hallstatt and was built during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The central museum, the Welterbemuseum Hallstatt, showcases the rich history of Hallstatt—the ancient salt mines and cemeteries, which date back to the Iron Age. Towards the end, I took a quiet stroll down the road beside the lake and even after spending five long hours at this place, it didn't cease to take my breath away. "5fingers is a very

by Kaushik Srinivasan

Have you ever heard of the village called Hallstatt? Popularly known as the “pearl of Austria”, this picturesque village is located by Lake Hallstatt in the upper part of Austria and has one of the best sightseeing spots in the world. I decided to take a tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site on my way to Salzburg from Vienna. It took me about three hours to travel by road to get there, passing through a series of winding roads surrounded by mighty grass sheathed mountains. You can also take a train, which arrives on the opposite side of the lake, and ride a boat across to Hallstatt. After dining at one of the half-dozen restaurants, I went to the upper part of the town and rode a funicular that lifted me around 300 metres above the village, giving me the perfect platform to soak myself completely in the astounding view around me. The village of Obertraun nestled between a valley on the other side of the lake. We walked further up the path to the beautiful salt mines. The region of Hallstatt has large reserves of salt, with prehistoric evidence dating its extraction back to around 5000 BC, making it home to the world’s oldest salt mine. The extracted salt is transported to neighbouring towns through a Brine pipeline (brine meaning salt water), making it the world’s oldest active industrial brine pipeline. Brine still flows through the pipes to this day and we were able to walk over it on what is called the Brine-Pipeline trail—the locals call it the Strähn.

SwatiK

Shashi Kalani and Swati Kalani, a charming mother-daughter duo, are the minds behind SwatiK. With an innate addiction to design, the pair love to travel and immerse themselves into the varied cultures from all around the world. Recognising the talent of the Indian handicraft industry, SwatiK reaches out to share this piece of culture with the world, through embroidery and design, ultimately aiming to cut through and sew a gap between countries and generations. SwatiK was born when Swati had found that she had become immensely picky about the home décor items she wanted to decorate her living space with. Having had an educational background in commercial art and interior design, her sense of detailing, colour balance, layout and textural juxtaposition were in great need of satisfaction and she could not find the products to fulfill it. Figuring that there had to be others out there with the same problem, SwatiK was founded. SwatiK uses a range of different Indian embroidery styles. For example, the duo used Zardosi, Kathiawafi, Cheed Moti and Gota styles in their current SS 2015 collection, all of them deriving from different states in India and having different materials, techniques and finishes in their making. The company recognises that Indian embroidery has long since entered global couture, with Milan and Paris fashion week having used and had it widely praised. Swati also believes that, since India is so full of tradition and modernism, the trick was to find the perfect balance of the two. The aim is to cater to a generation that isn’t looking to completely conform to traditions, but is searching for a more refined, modern and unconventional twist on the same classic works.

“Designing is a very organic to-and-fro process for me," Swati says. Whilst the final products are manufactured and packaged in India, the inspirations are drawn up whenever the muse shows up, whether it be a simple tassel or a certain material that feels like it needs to be worked with. The textile designers, artisans and the Kalanis brainstorm to come up with exclusive products that are not seen in the market, and sketches are made accordingly before being sent off to be manifested in real embroidery. SwatiK aims to provide its customers with products that feel more personal than the average off-the-shelf items. Each piece is personally hand crafted to bring together one’s individual taste and what's currently in fashion. With a few exceptions, SwatiK can embellish almost any home décor item with the embroidery of choice, including onto wallpapers, poufs, ottomans, frames, lampshades and more. Check out their latest collection. by Sumaya Nayr

Restaurant Review Eggspectation Eggspectation is an egg-cellent place to meet up with family and friends for a great brunch meal, located at the Jumeirah Beach Residence. The restaurant has quite the extensive menu with tons of great things to try out. We were served by a kind server who ensured that all our needs were catered to. To beat the heat, my friend and I ordered a freshly squeezed orange juice and a cappuccino freddo, out of which the cappuccino was the best. Choosing our mains was not an easy task, but we finally settled on a bacon n’ eggs benedict and the famous BBQ burger. While waiting for our main course, we were served freshly baked warm bread with jam. At first, what we noticed is how large the portion sizes were; my order of

by Abdullah Ali

eggs benedict consisted of an English muffin with beef bacon, topped with two poached eggs. Served on the side were Lyonnaise-style potatoes. There isn’t much to say about the eggs here since it was just done right—what we loved the best were the sides. The potatoes were simply delicious. The BBQ burger had to be the star dish and is a perfect cheat meal with a whole lot of cheese. Served with a side of scrambled egg, this meal deserves a 10 out of 10. A meal is never complete until you’ve had something sweet. We ordered the s’mores French toast, which was a warm brioche stuffed with Nutella and marshmallows. This reminded me of the endless amount of exercising my body needs! One word to describe Eggspectation would be 'perfect'. Everything here was simple, but great, and in addition the service was spot-on. However, it's probably not that great for people seeking peace and quiet, since the atmosphere was quite lively. by Sarah Sarvath

Sushi Counter Our first few steps into the Sushi Counter were ones welcomed by cheerful faces that made us want to come there more often. We were quickly escorted to our table, which was great except that the seats were kind of uncomfortable and gave us a backache. We were then approached with menus and started off with the miso soup, which was simply delicious with tofu and seaweed in every bite. For salads, we started off with the kelp salad, which was a little too exotic of our taste, however the quinoa and salmon salad was to die for. At this point we ordered a platter of Sushi Counter California rolls, passion rainbow dragon (which tastes as good as it sounds), salmon sweet spicy rolls, tuna rolls, avocado shrimp tartare, surf & turf summer rolls, shrimp

sushi, and tuna sashimi. It was all good and fresh and the aroma finished the equation to result with the best sushi I’ve ever tasted so far. We ended it with macaroons for dessert, which were amazing. Overall we found Sushi Counter to be great, and probably one of the best places to try fresh and tasty sushi. by Abdullah Ali

So, to be the real you, you’ve got to:

Being You

Own what you’ve got and offer all your unique qualities and make the world a little more vibrant.

"you're unique just like everyone else."

Get out of your comfort zone and try new things to discover more about yourself.

Love, know and accept yourself for who you are.

Imagine if everyone was the same. Everyone would fit in. The world would be a mindnumbingly dreary place to live in.

Life’s too short to live a double life, so live yours to the fullest. Live it the way you want to.

“You’re unique just like everyone else." This is a quote that is all about how having differences is precisely what unites you to everyone else. Wanting to fit in is something all of us strive for, whether it is at work, school or even at home. Have you ever done something you don’t want to just because you didn't want everyone else to think you’re weird? I know I have. When I was in school and we had assignments due, I would sometimes skip doing them if my friends would ask me to go out with them because I was worried that they wouldn’t talk to me otherwise. When someone tries to put on a façade just to 'fit in', you may be able to pull it off for a week, a month, or even years,

but eventually things will start to fall apart because you are being inauthentic. Being inauthentic and trying to pretend to be someone that you’re not is like building a house on pillars of sand. For true, lasting relationships, you need to let go of the fear that someone won’t like you because the fact is not everyone will. You can’t expect everyone to like you but the people who like you for you will make up for those who don’t and more. Just like wearing a shoe smaller than your size will only hurt your feet, being fake will only cause pain to both you and others. People are attracted to confident people. You can only be confident if you are secure enough to express yourself and be the real you.

Know that you can hang out with the 'popular kids' and still feel like an alien. The only way you will be content is if you find like-minded people like yourself who will make you feel like you’re the most loved person.

As long as you’re happy with yourself, what others think doesn’t matter. It's okay if people dislike you for being the way you are as long as you know you’re doing the right thing and being yourself. by shivani nagrecha

Alfredo Gimenez: Engineer, Pilot, Soccer Enthusiast

"You never know what you are going to end up encountering during an experimental flight test"

How did you get into the aerospace industry? Was it always a passion of yours? I got into the aerospace industry by following in my father’s steps—he is an airline captain and jet instructor. Originally, I just wanted to be a pilot. But then I discovered I was good at maths and physics. With the help of my dad, I ended up combining the best of both worlds after high school and I joined the College of Aerospace Engineering at Wichita State University, where I successfully graduated as an aerospace engineer. Meet Alfredo Gimenez, lead flight test engineer at Bombardier, which is the world’s leading manufacturer of both planes and trains. Gimenez leads two experimental prototypes and two simulator test articles, and with a passion for engineering, flying planes, playing soccer and living a healthy lifestyle, we wonder what can this man not do? We had the opportunity to speak with him and learn more about engineering, flight testing and the reality of life as an aerospace engineer. Tell us what you do on a daily basis. As the lead flight test engineer for the Bombardier Global 5000/6000 programs, I am in charge of performing experimental, developmental and certification test flights in support of software improvements, experimental instrumentation/installation checkouts, or envelope expansion. This gives me essentially two roles: I am an engineer on the ground, and an experimental air crew member on the test airplane. I have four test articles under my lead—two engineering simulators, and two test airplanes, an experimental Bombardier Global 6000, and an experimental Bombardier 5000. As an engineer on the ground, I am responsible for understanding engineering requirements, assisting other engineering disciplines in predicting numbers and/or establishing logic, and developing engineering documents known as test plans. As an air crew member, I am in charge of turning these test plans into operational test cards, taking into account risk and hazards associated with the test in question. We then go fly these test cards, containing test points. I have a flight test engineer monitoring station in the aft cabin, and along with other test pilots, we conduct the test points, where I am responsible for watching the stream of data our experimental instrumentation captures, making sense of the data, and seeing if the predicted numbers match the actual numbers. After we get back from a test flight, I am responsible for generating a highly technical flight test report, and assisting other engineering disciplines in data expansion or reduction, as needed.

What is the best and worst thing about the job? The best thing is it’s thrilling, and it gets my adrenaline flowing. You never know what you are going to end up encountering during an experimental flight test. The worst thing is the schedule pressure. As the last link of the chain, flight testers are typically expected to fly, fly, fly—no matter what, as customers are always waiting on the next big thing. The catch is, this compromises safety at times. Schedule pressure has been the root cause to sundry experimental test flights gone bad. If you had to choose a totally different career path, what would it be? I would probably choose to become a professional soccer player. I have played soccer all my life, and was convinced that I would go pro when I was 17 years old! What do you do for fun? I am a volunteer rescue pilot for an international non-profit organisation called Pilots N Paws, and when time allows, I go on rescue mission to save dogs that would be euthanised at shelters otherwise. I also like to visit schools and encourage kids to excel in maths and science, as the world needs more and more technically-oriented people with the advancement of technology. I otherwise like to work on my house, car, spend time with family and friends, stay fit and live a simple life. What would you advise to the youth who are interested in becoming future engineers? How do they decide what to focus on? I would advise the youth to sample it all before deciding. Download a free coding software/freeware and code up. See if you like it. Maybe ask a friend to take you on an airplane ride, maybe you’d love it all. Or perhaps, read up on cars and engines. Maybe that suits you. Whatever the case may be, make sure the heart finds its sweet spot. Because then, engineering not only becomes a career that pays well, but a lifetime of passion! by Bhargavi Nagrecha

Louis Cole

Louis Cole, best known as FunForLouis, is an adventurer, traveller, YouTuber, vlogger and motivator all wrapped in one. At the age of 32, he has practically travelled everywhere, all the while capturing his wild exciting voyages on camera for the world to see.

"I like creating space for spontaneity."

Born in Epsom, England, Cole has had many escapades over the course of his life, ranging from hitch hiking in New Zealand to skiing in the Swiss Alps. Apart from his travels, Cole does a lot of charity work and runs his own YouTube channel, which at the moment has over 1 million subscribers. one8one had the opportunity to speak with Louis and get to know him better. When you go to a new place, do you have a planned itinerary, or do you take your adventures as they come? A bit of both. I think it’s good to have some structure but it also helps to have some flexible plans since it is nice to start the day without knowing what you’ll end up doing. When I’m overplanned, it takes away the potential for spontaneity and that’s not really my style. I can’t do more than a week of planning when it comes to travelling because then it is too much, you know—some days you just need to chill or you might be driving along spots you really like and want to check out but you are stuck to a deadline. If I have had a super busy week, I balance it out by having time with no plans. Starting to take the day off has been more helpful, especially when I’m doing a lot of different things. If I have had a packed week, I might just want to sleep for a whole day after but I also might want to have a free day and end up doing something quite fun but it happens randomly. I like creating space for spontaneity. Being a vlogger and a traveller, what are the challenges you face the most? With travelling and vlogging, it is the time zone time differences with upload times. Also the lack of Internet in more rural and remote locations are some of the issues that I have faced in the past. What are your travel essentials apart from the technology needed? Apart from technology, I travel pretty light. Nothing really—as long as I have my bank card and passport, I’m good to go.

Do you think there will ever come a point in your life where you will stop travelling? I don’t think I will ever stop travelling. Perhaps I would travel less frequently or maybe just have a few places that I travel between. I can definitely see myself travelling every few months as compared to every few weeks. Potentially, the thing that can stop me from travelling all the time is if I have a couple of bases, a family at some stage or some projects that would need me to be more available in one place. But I think I’ll always want to migrate away from cold weather for my whole life.

"It’s not about overcoming the fear, it’s about doing it even if you are scared."

How do you get friendly with the locals? Any tips? I try to be friendly—that's my approach. Some places do not like the fact that I can’t speak the local languages but I think you can get around that by simply smiling. In terms of getting friendly and being a part of their life, I think that you have got to be aware that you don't want to go into a situation or a new place and feel entitled to things or feel like you know a better way of doing it than them. It can be frustrating in cultures where you are just not used to, for instance, how slow they might be doing things, but I guess you have to keep an open mind and realise that you are stepping into a different culture where things happen differently. I think that you shouldn't be too precious about the way you are doing things. In terms of making friends with locals or building connections and relationships with them, I have found it to be a lot easier in English-speaking countries. I think I always do make connections when I go to places but I guess the longer you stay somewhere, the longer you get the chance to make connections and friends. But because of my lack of ability to speak different languages, I am obviously going to connect with people in, say, America, Canada or South Africa. Language is always the best connecting tool.

What inspired you to start travelling? I think it has always been in me. I don't think there was ever one moment where I was like, "Oh wow, I think I am going to start travelling." I feel like it was inevitable. But probably, growing up, it was my parents’ attitude and my love for watching wildlife documentaries from around the world. I remember some of the family holidays definitely started to get more adventurous. When I was 14, we headed to South East Asia, and I saw how different life is there. I guess that probably triggered my thinking process of, "Yeah, I am definitely going explore the world." Over the course of your life, you have chosen to live in a homeless shelter, lived in a minibus, taken in and made friends with homeless people and now you travel all over the world with one million followers. Looking back, what are your thoughts? All of those things are a quite different aren’t they? I think you shouldn't be close-minded to how you behave or live. One day you can be homeless and the next day you could be doing something else. I feel like sometimes people are like, "Oh no that’s not me, I couldn't do that." I just think that life is this big spectrum of what you do. At one end it’s luxury or a privileged place and then at the other end you have no money or you’re homeless and I like being able to always travel across that spectrum. Sometimes I might be hitchhiking in New Zealand like I did recently, or camping or whatever, and other times being privileged to stay in really nice place with a good vibe. But I think that sometimes people pigeonhole themselves like they're this particular type of person, or they might be more high

maintenance and I think that it’s good to continually challenge your comfort zone and not let labels define you. You’re a motivator for a lot of people. What advice do you have for people who are scared to kick start their dreams? There’s nothing to lose. If there is a fear there, just start small and take little steps. You could also find a friend who can do it with you. But if we are just talking about dreams in general, I guess you never want to be that person who has never pursued their dream, since you will regret what you didn't do. I know it’s a cheesy quote but you are always going to regret things that you didn't do and you don't want to let fear control you or hold you back. My mum once said a really good quote, when we went horse riding and she was scared of riding but she did it anyway. She said, "It’s not about overcoming the fear, it’s about doing it even if you are scared." Now, even though she did ride the horse, she still found it scary but it was about doing it despite the fear. Life is scary sometimes, and I know that this may sound weird but I now actually enjoy being a bit scared of things because I like that feeling of pushing myself out my comfort zone. by Ayesha Ghaffari

Creative Auto

Snap It | Work It | Make It

Creative auto is a cool feature to use at any point of time when you are clueless about what setting to fix or you are in a hurry. The creative auto setting takes care of your ISO, AV and other camera settings to provide an optimum image when you click.

"Ahh! It’s my DSLR. I cannot capture things the way I see them!" If that’s the problem you are facing. Below are some basic tips that might help you figure your way through the camera to get optimum images.

A+ Scene Intelligent Auto is another of those automatic shooting modes, since it analyses the scene you are capturing and picks the correct camera settings for it, giving the picture good light.

Aperture value, ISO and shutter speed are three of the most important things to consider when capturing an image through a camera.

Aperture Value AV—aperture value. Aperture is the 'size' of the hole the light goes through when it passes the lens. Large apertures will let more light go through than small apertures. Shutter speed or ‘exposure time’ is the amount of time you let your camera shutter remain open to allow light into the camera sensor. If the shutter speed is fast, it can help to freeze action completely. If the shutter speed is slow, it can create an effect called motion blur, where moving objects appear blurred. ISO is the level of sensitivity of your camera to available light. The lower the ISO number, the less sensitive it is to the light, while a higher ISO number increases the sensitivity of your camera. If you keep the sensitivity lower, you will get a clearer, less grainy image.

Within the camera you can even adjust settings for what you would like to blur in the image. It could happen such that you would like to blur a closer image and clarify something that’s further off in the frame. Take, for example, a ghost film where we focus on the character initially and then blur them and focus on the ghost right behind them. Creative filters are a great way to edit your images superficially on the camera itself. Some of these effects include toy camera, miniature, grainy black & white and fisheye. Wireless flash is an option in the ‘flash control’ settings of your camera wherein you can control your flashguns remotely and won’t have to use your inbuilt flash. Camera angles and shot sizes are of equal importance along with all these settings. TIP: If you keep your aperture, ISO and shutter speed for a close up image you can create the best result. Of course, all these are small tips to help you use your camera to its best capabilities. You can, however, manually choose your own settings depending on the scene you wish to capture. You can manually set your camera focus, shutter speed, lighting, etc. These tips won’t make you a pro with your camera, but it will give you the starter push you need to get ahead. Try it. by Neelam Sawlani

Book Review The One-Straw Revolution Masanobu Fukuoka Masanobu Fukuoka is one of the most radical and influential agricultural thinkers of this century. The One-Straw Revolution describes the events that led to the development of Fukuoka's concept of 'natural farming.' The book deals with his farming methods, which is based on four principles: No cultivation, no chemical fertiliser or prepared compost, no weeding by tillage or herbicides, and no dependence on chemicals. He emphasises the basic principles of non-cultivation and non-chemical farming by the incorporation and controlled use of weeds rather than their eradication. This way of farming natural, he says, “exists forever as the wellspring of agriculture…no matter the age." He claims that after more than 20 years of applying this method to his land, his soil has only become richer every year, and his yields have increased consistently as well. Though his book is not exclusively about farming, he also expands on philosophy, history, nutrition, intentional communities, and sustainability. This book, from the very beginning, not only shows us sustainable farming techniques, ways to improve soil and many others, but in a way shows us how to prevent the problems that science and new-day technology created for us. In short, The One Straw Revolution will probably just confirm for you what you already know, and moreover, be an inspiration for us to work on the right path. I would highly recommend it, if for no other reason than to offer a very different view of agriculture and gardening.

A House in Bali Colin McPhee Colin McPhee is a Canadian composer and a musicologist who delved into the idea of ethnomusicology. Under his study, he looked specifically at ethnomusicology in Bali. In this book he chronicles his every move in Bali to let readers know what he learnt and made of everything that related to ethnomusicology. McPhee lived in Bali for almost 10 years, and in the beginning of the book, where he notes down the first things he notices when lands in the port town of Buleleng, "From somewhere came the sound of sweet crystal music; of a gong, and above it thin chimelike melody, commencing, stopping, commencing once again." McPhee wraps his writing around the rich sensory details he has experiences and transports his readers from wherever they are and right into the heart of Bali. He manages to glorify the Balinese culture, traditions and spirit of the people with his humour while describing their lifestyle through interpretations of his interactions with them. During the time that he was writing this book, Bali wasn’t anywhere close to being a holiday destination for anybody. However, after the book, people visited Bali to basically verify the authenticity of the experiences he had so carefully detailed. Much to the readers’ surprise, they experienced the same and much more. This book is a must-read for people interested in music, culture, tradition, lifestyle and travel. A House in Bali wraps you around the passion, obsession and need to discover the land of Bali. Released in 1947, it remains to date one of the most amazing detailings of Bali. by Neelam Sawlani

Polka dots are the new stripes “Round, soft, colourful, senseless and unknowing,” once mused the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama on her unwavering obsession with polka dots. Who, if not her, could explain why this romantic and feminine print always manages to circle back just as much as stripes. Polka dots fall under the category of classics—there's a reason Minnie Mouse never wore anything but the pattern, after all. Think of Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot. All these iconic prominent ladies have at least one thing in common— they were fabulous in their polka dot outfits.

30 Seconds to Mars

Closing night of Dubai Music Week, 30 Seconds to Mars blew the audience away with a spectacular concert. The band was in Dubai to promote Jared Leto’s directorial debut with the award-winning musical documentary, Artifact. The band has sold out several tours and consistently hit billboard top charts with their music. Their most famous hits including; ‘King and Queens’, ‘This Is War’, ‘The Kill’ and ‘Closer to the Edge’. The band is composed of oscar winning Jared Leto, Shannon Leto and their lead guitarist Tomo Miličević. The show opened with a local band called Juliana Down, the most popular rock band in from the UAE. They opened with a bang of well composed music along with good interaction with audience both unfamiliar and familiar with their music. After their set the anticipation and excitement for the main show built up.

Ellie Goulding

The audience was in no way disappointed except maybe with the short length of the setlist. Leto’s stage presence is incomparable with many musical artists, he entered waving the classic 30 Seconds to Mars sign on a flag causing everybody to scream in delight. As soon as the first song started the crowd went wild with excitement. The highlight was definitely the musician’s interaction with the audience which made the experience all the more surreal. We won't forget the confetti canons and balloons which were released during the beginning either. Our favourite song was ‘This is War’ which was performed with immense energy. Since 30 Seconds to Mars has an incredible reputation for live concerts we were definitely expecting the best and we received just that. The band had exceeded our expectations. It was difficult to take our eyes of the stage. The performance was so mesmerising, that the partial deafness and excruciating leg pain from standing was actually worth it.

Winner of the BRIT Award for Best Female Solo Artist, Ellie Goulding, was part of the Dubai Music Week. After hours and hours of anticipation, Ellie Goulding opened the show with her smashing hit, featuring Calvin Harris, Outside- the seamless balance between Goulding’s vulnerable warble and the warping synths underneath. She looked radiant and full of vigour and the same could be said for the obstreperous crowd of two thousand. She followed Outside with all of her popular, billboard-topping hits like, “Burn”, “I Need your Love”, “Love Me Like You Do”, “Powerful”, “Figure 8” and, let’s not forget, her relatively new song, “On My Mind.” The background had its way of changing themes according to the genre of the song. Love Me Like You Do, was our favourite performance as she had the whole crowd completely mesmerised with her melodious voice. It actually gave us goose bumps. We have eagerly been waiting for Ellie Goulding to return to Dubai since her first performance for Sandance NYE with Paul Van Dyk, Roger Sanchez, Zane Lowe and Rita Ora. Ellie was well worth the wait!

After he was released his face and name were splashed across traditional and social media, and he'd received thousands of tweets and Facebook posts of encouragement. President Barack Obama invited him to the White House and praised his love of science. Leaders at Reddit and Twitter offered him internships. Google executives said they were reserving Ahmed a spot at their weekend science fair and MIT asked him to visit the campus.

Facebook Working on Dislike Button The format of the button is still unclear, but the company has been working on the concept for a while and expects to roll it out soon. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that making something so "simple" is surprisingly complicated, but after years of people asking for the option to "dislike" a Facebook post, the company is finally ready. Facebook had hesitated to launch a dislike button. But it has come to realise that people want "the ability to express empathy" on posts about unpleasant news.

Croatia represents a longer and more arduous route into Europe for the asylum-seekers from Syria and elsewhere fleeing violence in their homelands. But they have little choice after Hungary sealed off its southern border with Serbia and began arresting anyone caught trying to enter illegally.
