Rebel Music
Earlier in April this year, MTV’s YouTube channel started documenting a rather fascinating TV series called Rebel Music. The show is a six-part series that approaches different countries in each episode, going through Turkey, Native America, Iran and Myanmar, to name a few. The show sheds light on a rather niche scene; music. Rebel Music helps to spread the stories of musicians and artists from all walks of life, many of whom are risking their lives to fight oppression and injustice with their music, creativity and art. The show shines light on their struggles and successes at the centre of today’s global social upheaval in some of the world’s most violent and misunderstood places.
When one picks up any newspaper it is easy to see political unrest in many countries, however through this documentary, one can actually see the unrest on a more personal and empathetic level. We don't think that the youth of today would consider listening to music freely as a luxury, but in a lot of countries this is the case. Since a lot of people turn to music to help rid themselves of heavy emotions, and to deal with uncertainty and violence. In a countries such as Myanmar and Iran, there is plenty of political turmoil, and the government often gets involved with the distribution of music, in regards to censorship. Unfortunately for the musicians, creating or even listening to certain types of music could mean getting lashed, arrested, exiled, and sometimes, even killed.
The documentary goes on to follow the lives of the musicians living in these countries, showing us how they fight and strive in order to listen to and play music openly. The musicians speak in their native language, however English subtitles are provided. This definitely helps to maintain cultural integrity and paints a more natural, and realistic feel to their struggles. Powerful, stunning imagery and compelling direction is used to tell their stories, which helps them to relay their journey. Rebel Music releases a new episode every Thursday and is a must-watch. by Sumaya Nayr

Smoothies for the Summer
Looking for a refreshing smoothie to indulge in this summer? Why not make one yourself with these delicious and easy recipes that we have put together for you? With a pinch of sweetness, you won’t believe that they’re good for your health.
Skinny Berry Cheesecake Smoothie • 1¼ cups almond milk • 1 cup vanilla greek yogurt • 1 cup Fiber One original cereal pellets • 1¼ cups frozen berries (your choice) • 6 ice cubes • Place ingredients in your blender in order given. Blend on a low speed for 10 seconds, then a medium to mediumLow speed for 10 seconds, then medium to medium-high speed for 40 seconds. Finally, serve in your favourite cup with a straw and sip away.
Green Kiwi Smoothie • 2 medium mangoes • 2-3 bananas • 3 kiwis — remove the peels • 2 cups washed spinach leaves (loosely measured in cup) • Water • Cut mangoes and the kiwis into cubes or strips and put in a blender. Add water to about the height of the fruit in the blender, then blend. Once smooth, add washed spinach leaves to loosely fill the blender to the top. Blend. Add frozen mangoes and bananas. Blend again and serve. Things you need to know: • The bananas masks the taste of the spinach. Do not omit or reduce them. If you can still taste the spinach, add another banana. • This smoothie is just as good using other frozen fruit in lieu of the frozen mango or the kiwis, so if you see something else on sale, don’t hesitate. Only mangoes or peaches will maintain the beautiful green colour, though. Using frozen berries is still yummy, but turns the smoothie into a brownish colour.
Peanut Butter Protein Smoothie • 1 cup skim milk • 2 tablespoons protein powder of your choice • 1 ½ tablespoons natural peanut butter • 1 medium banana (cut into thick slices and frozen) • Pour milk, banana, protein powder, and peanut butter in that order into the blender and blend until smooth.
Berry Cinnamon Smoothie • 1 pear (medium size) • 1 cup mixed berries (frozen) • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk • 2 tbsp rolled oats • 1 tbsp hemp seeds • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 medjool date (2 for a sweeter version) • 1 tbsp chia seeds (optional) • Place all ingredients in the blender. Blend on medium for 10 seconds, then blend on high for 30 seconds. That’s it! You can also make this into a smoothie bowl if you only use half of the almond milk and add granola on top. by Abdullah Ali

Summer Recipes Summer is a time for fun, eating and gatherings. Here are some simple recipes to dazzle your palette and your guests’, too.
Summer Salad Ingredients 2 teaspoons of mint leaves 1 slice of watermelon about 1 inch thick from the centre of the watermelon 1 ounce of feta cheese Method 1) Wash and chop up all the mint leaves. 2) Place the round watermelon slice on a plate and scatter the mint leaves on it. Then crumble and spread the feta cheese all over the watermelon. Serve cold. 3) Drizzle balsamic vinegar (optional).
Berries in Hot Snow Serves 4 Ingredients 500g frozen berries of your choice 142ml of double cream 140g of high-quality white chocolate (not white chocolate chips) Method 1) Make the sauce by letting some water simmer in a saucepan and placing a glass bowl over the saucepan so that it isn’t touching the water. Break the white chocolate into the bowl, stirring it carefully until it is melted. Add the double cream and stir the mixture until it’s fully incorporated. 2)Scatter the frozen berries in 4 bowls when serving and pour the hot chocolate sauce over them right before serving.
Cherry Tomato Spaghetti Recipe Serves 4 Ingredients 8 ounces uncooked spaghetti 2 2/3 cups cherry tomatoes 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper 2 1/2 tablespoons chopped or torn fresh basil leaves 2 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1/2 cup (2 ounces) crumbled semisoft goat cheese Method 1) Preheat oven to 450째. 2) Bring 4 quarts of water to a boil in a large Dutch oven. Add 1 tablespoon of salt and spaghetti to boiling water, cook 10 minutes or until spaghetti is al dente. Drain spaghetti in a colander over a bowl, reserving 1/3 cup cooking water. Return spaghetti to pan, set aside, and keep warm. 3) While spaghetti cooks, combine tomatoes, 1 tablespoon olive oil, vinegar, 3/8 teaspoon salt, and pepper on a jelly-roll pan, tossing well to coat. Bake tomato mixture at 450째 for 10 minutes or until tomatoes are soft and lightly charred in places. 4) Add tomatoes and any tomato juice to spaghetti in Dutch oven. Add 3 tablespoons of reserved cooking water to jelly-roll pan, scraping pan to loosen browned bits. Carefully pour water mixture and remaining 1 tablespoon of oil into spaghetti mixture. Place Dutch oven over medium heat. Add remaining reserved cooking water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until spaghetti mixture is moist, tossing frequently. Stir in basil and parsley. Sprinkle with cheese. Serve immediately.

Beat the Beach Blues What time is it? It’s summer time! And summer rhymes with beach‌ well not really but that’s what a person usually associates with summer. Most of us in Dubai turn to the beach as it gets too hot for any other outdoor activities. If you are not sure about what to take, fear not because we have got you covered, no pun intended. Make a checklist of these must-carry items for a fun-filled beach trip.
Friends Get your friends to join you on a trip to the beach. Make sure to get beach balls, footballs or even try playing some card games to pass the time. Nothing cements friendships like sand and water.
Beach Bag The most obvious and necessary item is the bag. Ditch your designer party bags and get yourself a fun, functional beach bag that is light and easy to carry. Let the motto be comfort over style.
Beach accessories Hats, towels for drying off and separate ones for lying down in the sand. Remember sunglasses, and a cover-up to protect your skin when it gets too hot. Flip-flops help protect your feet. Make sure to bring an umbrella for lazing out in the sun. And dont forget to bring separate clothes for the sand and for swimming.
Snacks Don’t let yourself be tempted to snack on greasy food as that just invites the lost calories back. Instead pack yourself small containers of healthy snacks or fruit bites along with chilled smoothies, check out our top healthy snacks and smoothies to beat the heat. Place the snacks and smoothies in a small cooler bag to keep them chilled.
Sunscreen and Lotions Make sure to take these if you don’t intend to look like an Oompa-Loompa, unless that’s what you’re aiming for. Pick a sunscreen with the right SPF to protect your skin better. Protect your lips from the heat by using a chapstick or lip balm.
Beachwear Get an appropriate beachwear suit that helps you hit the waves and laze around. For those of you who want to get more skin coverage than the average bathing suit provides, try a burqini — the conservative version of a bikini.
H20 Most importantly, stay hydrated by carrying a flask of cold or chilled water. Carry the flask with you so as to remind yourself to hydrate every few minutes or so.

Kuala Lumpur The words Kuala Lumpur literally mean ‘muddy estuary’, as the city lies at the convergence of two rivers. When I visited Kuala Lumpur, I witnessed a unique mix of cross-cultural traditions. There were communities of Chinese, Malays, East Malaysian, Indonesians, Sikhs and groups of tourists. Kuala Lumpur is a fantastic tourist spot as it is a roller coaster of lively nightlife, fascinating art performances, sports activities, unique skyscrapers, tasty varied cuisines and street food. Above all, Kuala Lumpur is a great shopping destination. I would like to share my experience, which is all about cultures, adventure and attractions. My family and I stayed at Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel for five nights. We booked two rooms with a view of the Petronas Towers. The location was very convenient as it was opposite the bus station and many fast food restaurants. For all the attractions, which were located far away, we had booked a tour guide and a driver in advance to make the tour informative and comfortable. This is something that I would recommend all tourists to do, as it will make for a better experience. The fabulous street food can’t be missed under any circumstances. My family and I were surprised after finding out that it is normal to have about six meals in a day in Malaysia. During our stay, I mostly ate noodles, rice, satay and vegetables from some of the street food stalls. Usually I am not a big fan of trying new dishes but it was all delicious and worth the experience. Regarding the shopping, my favourite purchase was a wooden necklace with my name written out on it. I also bought plenty of handicrafts and souvenirs for family, friends and myself. We also visited numerous attractions, which I absolutely enjoyed and should not be missed.
Chinatown is an area filled with colours; it is an exquisite neighborhood that never sleeps. The entire area is filled with stalls offering all kinds of goods, though this is an area where one should definitely bargain in order to get the best deal. One should also try the ripe and juicy fresh fruit and food within this gorgeous, lively and vibrant market. The Petronas Twin Towers are obviously quite a popular tourist destination and hence there were several long queues and all the tickets were sold out quite quickly. So it is best if you book in advance or get there super-early. The towers make up one of the most beautiful cityscapes of the world, and from them, one can experience fascinating views of the city. Also, the city’s main park was fun to walk around, as you get to view the towers from pretty much every angle. Genting Highlands is a famous resort that has a huge indoor theme park. To reach the park, we had to take a cable car ride known as the Genting Skyway Cable car. The ride was very relaxing with an amazing view of the trees and mountain and, since the weather was cool, it was a lot of fun. The park also had fun rides and activities but the main highlight was the cable car ride. If you enjoy taking pictures of nature then you are going to fall in love with the Butterfly Garden — you wouldn’t expect such beauty and wonder in one place.There were hundreds of different kinds of butterflies, a beautiful and charming garden with walkways, ponds, creeks and bridges. I couldn’t stop snapping pictures and admiring the butterflies. I would like to visit Kuala Lumpur again, along with the rest of Malaysia, as it is an interesting land with plenty of cultural and natural wealth. by Nazish munir

Movie Reviews Mad Max: Fury Road by Janine Jolly
The long-awaited movie of 2015 has finally arrived in cinemas and the film lived up to every expectation. It’s astonishing to see how director and producer George Miller can go from creating something like the adorable animation Happy Feet to something as spectacular as Mad Max: Fury Road. More like Fast and Furious 2.0, this exhilarating, pumped up, adrenalinepacked, roller coaster of a movie will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time, leaving you thirsty for more. The film is set in an apocalyptic world, in the furthest regions of the desert where humanity has been destroyed and everyone is fighting for survival against each other. Two rebels meet — Max and Furiosa, who believe they can save humanity or at least whatever is left of it. Tom Hardy does an amazing job portraying Max Rockatansky in the film. He sure is mad! There’s also a stellar performance by Charlize Theron, who plays Imperator Furiosa, a strong woman who believes that survival is possible if she can make it across the desert back to her homeland. Mad Max: Fury Road is everything you could ever want from an action movie. The graphics are pure brilliance and the story doesn’t fail to keep the audience interested. Nothing seems easy or predicable. The movie fuses itself together beautifully with monumental thrills and intense scenes that will leave you visually stunned with your pulse pounding.
Jurassic World by Anusha Goyal
Jurassic World is set 22 years after Jurassic Park, which we all know didn’t go too well. This time due to technological advancements, the park has become hugely successful. That is until the park needs to be hyped up again and new genetically modified dinosaurs are created in the lab. The only problem is, this also happens to turn the dinosaurs smarter as well. The plot follows park manager Claire’s (Bryce Dallas Howard) nephews, Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins), as they visit the park for the first time. When Claire’s nephews end up in danger, Claire must enlist the help of the raptor trainer, Owen (Chris Pratt). The movie crushed the box office this year. The film’s CGI is incredible, and is punctuated with clever plots. It touches on the main lessons that the original was trying to teach the audience, along with nail-biting action scenes and little pops of humour at the perfect times. If you want to relive the nostalgia from watching the original as a child, or simply watch an astounding action film, this is perfect one to watch this summer.
Run All Night by Neelam Sawlani
Run All Night is a film that follows the trademark action style of Liam Neeson that was set years back. Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson) is a ex-Irish mob enforcer, who in his time was feared and dangerous and referred to as the ‘Gravedigger’. His son, Mike, disgusted by his father’s work, moves away from him. However, when Mike witnesses a murder by Danny, he heads straight to his father. Danny happens to be the son of Shawn, who is Jimmy’s closest friend. Jimmy, realising the danger of the situation, jumps to save Mike’s life and does not stop until he ends the story of bloodshed. The editing style in the film is almost flawless, with cut-to-cut shots of information that need to be exposed at various points of the film. However, the movie drags on for two long hours and there are several moments where the plot seems to sag a little. The film as a whole is fast paced without too many interruptions and works well due to its entertaining factor. Director Collet-Serra has managed to create a dark colour palette which keeps viewer on their toes wanting to know more, without getting impatient. There is a constant sense of action in the film and at some points it borders on the edge of being too much about the action, but it manages to balance itself at the right points. For Run All Night, most reviews have been satisfactory, with the exceptions offering complaints about the running time of 114 minutes.
San Andreas by Neelam Sawlani
San Andreas is about a helicopter-rescue pilot who rushes into the middle of a disastrous earthquake zone in California to save his only daughter, Blake, who is trapped in San Andreas. The graphic editing in the film is almost unbelievably realistic. The falling of the dams, bridges and buildings feels real to a viewer. But the film, however amazing, is somewhat of a cliché. We all know as viewers exactly what is going to happen at the end. And at certain points, it almost feels like we are watching a made-over version of 2012. That said, the action, drama, and thrill of the disaster is well placed. The plot has been designed in a manner to allow you to feel the panic for a moment while the disaster takes place, or when the despair sets in, or even when the determination to save lives rises. Of course, the science portrayed in the film has been grandly exaggerated, but the graphics make the visuals almost believable. Critics have brought up the question of how Ray, the main character, is out on a mission of his own rather than following the orders as a resuce pilot. And a lot of people have been offended by the fact that the film was released so soon after the Nepal earthquake. Others who enjoy this genre of film have been entirely satisfied with the outcome. The acting style is sincere, with emotions emanating right out from the characters to the viewers. Overall, if you are one for disaster movies, San Andreas is fully loaded and ready to go.
