Express Yourself one8one is the best thing that’s ever happen to me and I’m sure our team will second that. Yup, we’re that awesome! Our world is full of amazing people, great graphics, out of this world photography (p.62) and loads of fashion (p.30), concerts (p.20) and events (p.6). We make sure to have fun and express ourselves as much as we can; whether it’s art (p.52), poetry (p.66) or just trying out the next Harlem Shake, which is top of our hit list (p.17). We even have an Xbox and a PS Vita at our office to keep us busy during those rare occasions we have our mental blocks. What’s most amazing is that we are the most awesome team you’ll ever meet and our interns get to be a part of it forever. If you want our lifestyle, meaning; going to events, fashion shows, concerts, getting to try out new phones (p.46) and video games that have not been released yet and meeting celebrities at a cricket game (p.58) then get on to our website www.one8one.com and submit your writing, intern for us, or simply email us at mysay@one8one.com and express yourself however way you like. We look forward to hearing your expressions.

Basma Abdou When I first got the internship at one8one I was ecstatic ! It was exactly what I wanted. When I first started working, everyone was exceptionally nice and willing to help me adjust and learn. This is my first internship so I cannot wait to see where it takes me in life. This internship is so much fun with everlasting laughter while getting work done.

DAACC Team Thank you for showing an interest in being a speaker for the Dubai American Academy Career Conference (DAACC) R.I. Dear one8one, Hope you’ve had a great winter break and Happy New Year! In your next magazine issue, one of my suggestions is to include a review on the Cirque Du Soleil performance that will be held starting from February 6th- 16th. A.S. I just came across your magazine’s post regarding internship. I really wanna go for it.
S.B. one8one has a pizzazz to it that appeals to me and I would love to join its team. C.L. I would like to be a model because it would open up my views to the world of fashion. Ever since I was a child I dreamt of being a fashion designer, designing clothes in my spare time. I have my own sewing machine and use it to edit and make clothes, and I think that this would be a fantastic opportunity for me to be able to show my creativity and taste the industry. I would like to experience the excitement and busyness of a real photo shoot and give back to the magazine, which has given me so much. I love this magazine and the concept of it; the ‘for youth by youth’ slogan caught my eye and I would enjoy being a part of this magazine- I will enjoy being involved with it as much as I would reading it, and hope you consider my wish.
Hannah Tayab My name is Hannah. I am just a fourteen year old fashion blogger who dreams of, one day, becoming editor of British Vogue. Work experience at one8one was everything I thought I it would be. Whether I was organising photo shoots, interviewing or writing articles…I definitely had a wonderful time. If I am going to take anything away from my internship it’s that anything is possible with a bit of determination and persistence.

AUS Cricketers Make Debut in Sri Lanka Fourteen AUS cricketers travelled to Sri Lanka to play at the International Invitational Tournament in Kandy on January 27 - the realization of a long-cherished dream following a successful year of victories in regional tournaments. AUS played a 35-over match with St. Antony’s College on their ground in Kandy on January 28, but the team was unable to chase the target set by the St. Antony’s team due to a sudden change in weather conditions in Kandy. Two T20 matches were played on the following day, one against Kandy Youth Cricket Club and the other against Trincomalee District team. Both teams were very competitive and exhibited a high level of excellence. AUS cricketers made a splendid effort in the match against the Kandy Youth team and pulled a last over victory in a thrilling finish by 7 wickets. In their last match against Trincomalee District, the AUS team could not chase the set target. During its stay in Sri Lanka, the AUS team visited the historic Pallekalle Cricket Stadium and the famous Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The cricketers enjoyed the natural beauty of Sri Lanka and explored the country’s wildlife in its natural habitat. Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, congratulated the team members for their maiden international appearance and mentioned that such tours will enhance their performance, as they will acquire experience and the ability to adapt to various playing conditions. Furthermore, she promised the team her support to develop sports among students of AUS.

The Farnsworth Invention by Swati Kalani The moment I realized who the play writer was, the immediate reaction was to gain access to ‘The Farnsworth Invention’ play at Wellington International School. After all, Aaron Sorkin is the mastermind behind ‘A Few Good Men’, ‘The American President’, ‘The Social Network’ to name a few. The anxiety now was, will the director and artists do justice to the script. (Oh they sure did!) ‘The Farnsworth Invention’ is a docu-drama based on the inventor of television. It is set in the early 20th century when two genius visionaries – Philo and David - contending each other to invent the television first. Television would have been the turning point of 20th century, and they wanted that historic glory for themselves. Who’d win? The play unfolds with 40 talented actors transporting you to early 20th century. Their acting was real, gripping and audacious. Chronologically synced costumes added to that era’s charm that effused on-stage. Kudos to the theatre artists and all the technicians who made this play such a wonderful experience.
Nike+ Kinect Training When we heard that Nike+ Xbox wanted us to train with the new Kinect game ‘Nike+Kinect Training’ we were intrigued to say the least. We headed out to ‘ Platform 3 Fitness ’- a cool gym in Dubai Marina to try it out and, oh boy, were we surprised. First of all, this game is crazy accurate. Thanks to Kinect’s ability to detect the human body and read its build, the trainer game would actually let you know if something was done incorrectly. We did a 30-minute workout on hard mode, which included the full-body workout with pushups, sit-ups, squats and lunges, to name a few. The coach on the screen provides detailed instructions and even gives advice on how to avoid looking at the screen when doing pushups. Overall the experience could be described as fun and different. The game could be a perfect stepping-stone on the way to becoming fit. This is perfect for those who feel intimidated by the fitness gyms and outdoor activities. For us, though, this game is perfect for UAE summer indoor workouts.
Art Week

‘Art Week’ is here again! Dubai will be abuzz with art vibes from 14th to 24th March. ‘Design Days’ in Downtown, ‘Sikka Art Fair’ in Bastakiya and ‘Art Dubai’ in Madinat Jumeirah are components that make up ‘Art Week’. Activities include art exhibitions, gallery openings, talks & discussions, film screenings, open-studio exhibitions, workshops and so much more! An exciting element to look out for is the ‘dXb Store’, a nonprofit space that showcases UAE-based creatives, providing a platform for limited-edition objects, artists’ multiples, and jewellery, created in the UAE. We grabbed hold of two of the younger designers out of all the chosen ones for ‘dXb Store’, for our readers. Nada Khalid Alabdooli : “Making art is not only a hobby but its a reflection of life. Everyone should experiment with the freedom of making art.”, says Nada. This visual artist and graphic designer enjoys isolating herself and living in an imaginary word of paper and paint. She blatantly denies to restricting herself to a particular design style because as she puts it, “I am still young and I am still learning.” She is one of the winners of Abu Dhabi Wings project and the second-place recipient of the Sheikha Manal’s Young Artist’s award in 2012.
Sehyr Ahmad : This young lady, a freelance graphic designer, is passionate about creativity. She says, “It’s a healthy passion to have though, as I feel creativity is contagious.” Her passion was always supported by her parents, a fact which helped her excel in whatever she did. She begins her design process for every project with an inspiration, which usually comes by reading books while sipping on hot tea. She does not believe in sticking to one design style as, according to her, every project demands a different type of aesthetic and design style tends to evolve with time. She loves to travel and read and re-read. Her design skills are largely in branding, web design, package design and print media to name a few.
Prêt à Portea Fundraiser Fashion Show Saturday night at the Dubai Mall in the Red Box, students from different schools around Dubai modeled clothes from Galeries Lafayette in aid of Dubai Cares. For months, I had been planning my 3rd charity event all leading up to this day to raise money for the Dubai-based charity. Over the summer I was awarded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, at the Dubai Cares 5th anniversary ceremony, so it inspired me to organize yet another fashion show to help people around the world. This is the third time I’ve organized the fashion show, and this year was the biggest one yet! The audience was great, the venue was gorgeous and all the models were absolutely stunning! I could not have been prouder of this event, especially since all the money raised is going to charity to help children in need of education. Sponsors included Hey Sugar, Flying Elephant and Galeries Lafayette of course, as well as many others that donated their products for raffle prizes - which was another way of raising money.
The money raised comes from selling tickets and this year this fashion event raised approximately AED 19,000 - all going to Dubai Cares. This year, the theme was inspired by Alice in Wonderland so it was a massive tea party, with cupcakes, popcorn, candy floss and the clothes of course fit the theme as well. Overall, it was a huge success and a very magical night! by

The Queen of Buttons
I sat next to a charming lady and couldn’t help but stare at her handbag for it was unique and very different. In fact, I liked it so much that I asked her where she got it from and the answer was as interesting as the bag itself, “I made it” she said. The bag was adorned with buttons, the like of which I have never seen anywhere. I was so impressed with her answer that I needed to know more. I figured out, all ladies out there would want to know more about Farida and her bags glittering with buttons. So I sat with Farida and we had a little chitchat about her unique idea and her aspirations for the future. Her name is Farida Talaat. She is an ambitious young Egyptian entrepreneur, based in Dubai, who has created her own brand ZORAR, which designs, produces and markets creative handbags.
14
First of all Farida, what does ZORAR mean? And how would you describe a ZORAR bag? ZORAR means ‘button’ in Egyptian Arabic. ZORAR bags are unique women’s handbags featuring an eclectic mix of hundreds of colorful buttons, funky trinkets and other creative charms in artistic designs. The bags are all 100% handmade so that no two bags are ever alike; each ZORAR bag is a one-of-a-kind creation. The bags are so versatile you could carry one to a casual chic event or while shopping at the mall. They also come in different shapes, sizes and colors and could even be custom-made for each client. So, how did you get this idea? How did it all start and how long have you been making your own bags? I have a passion for buttons. I collect them. I find myself always stitching them on my ready-made clothes or gluing them to my accessories and other gadgets I use. It all started when I found myself with a bunch of buttons from my own wardrobe that I didn’t want to throw away. Buttons come in endless shapes, sizes, colors and textures and could totally transform an outfit and make it look fun and different. In a moment of inspiration, I decided to create a funky and unique bag. Whenever I wore it, people would stop me and ask where I got it from, just like you did. That’s when I got the idea to recreate the bag, add other designs and launch my own line of women’s handbags called ZORAR. I officially launched the brand in late 2010.
Other than handbags, do you also personalize other accessories in your signature style? Yes, I design and create evening clutches, matching shoes, mobile phone and camera holders, all adorned with buttons. In addition to jewelry; rings, earrings, hair accessories, a few select clothing items: such as blouses, denim jackets and Abayas, sometimes even stationery. How are you inspired and what makes your work special? Living in Dubai, I am always inspired by the different cultures and backgrounds of people I meet. I also get inspired by watching films, walking in nature and from my travels and reading. It’s amazing how reading a book, which is something intangible, can translate into a design on a real bag. What is your customer response like? Since the launch in 2010, the bags have been met with high demand from customers. Some even place orders for custommade bags using their own collection of buttons. The bags are available for purchase online through several websites. I receive orders from all over the world including Europe and some countries in the Middle East. What would you advise anyone looking to start designing fashion accessories as a hobby or business? Creating the bags is my hobby. I consider each bag to be a work of art on its own rather than just another arm accessory. My advice is to launch it as a business only if you really like your hobby. If you like it, people will love it! It’s also useful to gain skills yourself and not rely on a professional such as a tailor…etc. Also study the market in terms of best prices, gain insights from clients and be very interested in online fashion sites, boutiques and blogs. Please give a very basic step-by-step guide to making a simple button bag… I first sketch the bag with the shape, design and colors of buttons I envisage to help me visualise its final look. I then cut out the fabric in the desired shape; square, rectangular or round for a duffle bag. Then I stitch the buttons, beads and other charms on the fabric according to a random but organized design layout. Finally, I stitch a thick silky satin lining to the bag’s interior and add straps at the top, always paying attention to little details and the quality of the finishing. How can I get a ZORAR bag/accessory? ZORAR bags and accessories are sold at the following shops in Dubai and Abu Dhabi: Boom & Mellow - Mall of the Emirates O’ de Rose – Al Wasl, Jumeirah Candella – The Village Mall, Jumeirah Grafika - Al Wahda Mall, Abu Dhabi Online: www.aura-b.com www.my-stall.com www.ananasa.com

A funny story about a high school senior (Wren) who is not the most popular girl in school. She gets invited to the hottest Halloween party of the year, hosted by the most popular boy in school. The upset however, is that her mother leaves Wren to babysit her eight year old brother Albert. When the mischievous boy runs away, Wren is then obliged to look for her brother all over town, and spends the night roaming getting into awkward situations with her friends. A comedy that is sure to lighten your heart and give you a few laughs.
This movie is based on a true story about a group of CIA officers pretending to be a film crew in order to enter Tehran and free the 52 US citizens taken hostage during the Iranian revolution. Ben Affleck directs and also stars as the innovative Tony Mendez in this movie. Affleck twists the facts of this true story into a captivating espionage story where the stakes are so high, it is literally a matter of life-and-death. The movie leaves you on the edge of your seat.
Take a trip back to the 1950’s with this glamorous movie. Based on a famous Broadway musical, the famous Frank Sinatra stars next to Marlon Brando along with Viviane Blaine and Jean Simmons. The musical promises many comic scenes and an insider’s viewpoint on a desperate promotor in New York City. A perfect romantic comedy.

Album Reviews by
basma abdou
Rihanna ‘Unapologetic’ The Barbados-born singer has recently released her 7th album titled ‘Unapologetic’. Accompanied by the mini ‘777 Tour’ (where the press and a few lucky fans were taken on a seven-city tour around the world on her private plane), the whole feel of the album is quite commercial and bland. Apparently Rihanna’s career is primarily focused on money and the whole album sounds overly produced with occasional glimpses of songs that show a bit of emotion and vocal ability (for example her song with Mikky Echo ‘Stay’). All in all, it is still as catchy and as addictive as ever Definitely one to be considered for parties and social events as mood elevating background music.
Bruno Mars ‘Unorthodox Jukebox ’ The customarily tame Bruno Mars decided to finally push his boundaries. Instead of writing songs that are PG15, he finally took total control of the writing and is writing songs more appropriately related to his own age (27). His recent album’s title ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ could not be more fitting for the tracks produced. Mars wrote several controversial songs that have become recent hits such as ‘Young Girls’, ‘Gorilla’ and the number one hit ‘Locked Out of Heaven’. Mars also decides to include some reggae tracks such as ‘Show Me’ which are quite appealing. Also the final songs that are acoustic renditions of his hits are quite refreshing. A wonderful album that has his personality written all over it- a pleasure for the listener.
A$AP Rocky ‘LiveLoveA$AP’ Definitely a guilty pleasure. A$AP Rocky is the next big rapper coming out of New York City. The Harlemite has definitely evolved in his style since he landed a $3 million deal with RCA. Don’t expect any fancy word play, but this album is packed with smooth flowing rhymes that definitely grab your attention. The beat is almost trance like and fits perfectly with the lyrics. A perfect album for a chilled evening.

Kanye West Live in Abu Dhabi writing and photography by
DANIA CHATILA
“Kanye’s performance and stage presence was truly mesmerizing, and many were shocked at how he commanded the stage- being the only person on it”
Photos: Saldanha Kanye tookJosh to the du Arena to a spectacular set enclosed by giant screens projecting images of turbulent weather, while the stage itself was designed to look like he was singing from inside a giant iceberg. Meanwhile, paper snowflakes were intermittently blasted over the crowds by giant blowers. Stunning high-definition visuals showcased huge panoramas of Arctic mountains, blue skies, clouds and icy water behind Kanye as he performed. All of these crazy effects kept myself and every other audience member in complete awe, all of the technical crew at the concert managed to blast a wintery ambiance into the air (literally). Kanye definitely got the crowd going by energetically performing a string of his best-known hits – with the highlights being ‘All Falls Down’, ‘Good Life’ and ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’. He even thrilled his die-hard fans by wearing a rather bizarre, feathered ‘Yeti’ mask and an even more extravagant crystal-encrusted headpiece, all tying in with the ‘winter wonderland’ theme of the concert. While this wintry weather theme was impressive enough, it all seemed somewhat surreal with the balmy heat of a typical January night in the UAE, as proven by the beads of sweat pouring from Kanye’s forehead as he performed. Kanye’s performance and stage presence was truly mesmerizing, and many were shocked at how he commanded the stage- being the only person on it. There were no dance routines or major stunts yet Kanye’s voice and costume seemed to be more than enough for viewers. Kanye’s popularity in recent years has rested on his ability to mix hip-hop style with a tortured introspection. And this was evident on stage, as at times he appeared close to meltdown, falling to his knees in quivering emotion as he crooned away. Of course, this went down a storm with his diehard fans, who seemed in pure bliss as they chanted along to his most popular hits. Kanye West’s concert was a major success. He proved once again that he’s a man who does things on his own terms. There’s an old saying in show business – ‘always leave them wanting more’, and Kanye West did just that. Mr. West has clearly taken that old show business adage to heart - we await his next performance in the UAE with pure excitement.

Cirque Du Soleil: Dralion Photo: Anton Rodionov
It was time to unravel the mystery of the mythical realm of Cirque du Soleil, quite Photo: as Flash literally, we got exclusive access to Dralion’s Media Rehearsal. A flight of stairs opened up to the massive stage with bright color lights and great music. And there they were, in sweatpants and tank tops, rehearsing for the big show. That is when reality dawns, it’s for real, they are for real, they are people just like us and not figments of imagination. Of course they are trained professionals, who are doing what they do best; entertaining you with marvelous juggling, gymnastics, acrobatics and aerial acts blended with contemporary choreography. Artists from 17 different nationalities, who had trained in Montreal, Hungary and China, all converged in Dubai for Dralion! We were exasperated as we were ushered backstage. It was like a futuristic construction site with all the metal scaffolding and electronic equipment. The sheer scale of the stage with the supporting skeleton was worth billions of dollars, as conveyed by the art director Sean Mckeown. It is interesting to know that with the advancement of technology, the whole stage set can be set up in a mear span of 12 hours in contrast to the old set which took 2 days to be assembled. Backstage is a completely different world, so much more subtle yet abuzz with activity. There are artists rehearsing their acts, some of them simply lounging, some testing their props, others being interviewed by press. We were inevitably pulled to the costume section. Hundreds of colorful costumes hung on racks. But what caught our eye were the washing machines and dryers (each one had a name!) which actually travel with the troupe wherever they go. Melody Woods, the head of costume section told us about the process behind the creation of 1,500 costume pieces, custom made for each artist. Every costume piece is checked by her team for any cuts or problems. This is an important step, since any costume malfunction in the middle of any act could be very dangerous. It was a pleasure meeting the cast and crew of Dralion-Cirque du Soleil. We had seen it, stripped off of all the layers of make-up and costumes, in its bare minimum, the intriguing Dralion. There was so much energy in the arena that we couldn’t help but feel excited and anxious to watch the show the next day.

The day of the show It was a late evening, and yet we saw crowd coming in hours before the show to acquire the best seats. Not surprisingly the mini stadium, built especially for this show, was full. The Dralion unfolded over a little more over two hours. It was a holistic entertaining experience; with moments of laughter by the clowns, to awe with the beautiful aerial acts and spinning wheel, and gripping moments with hoop diving, bamboo poles and skipping ropes. There were completely amusing acts of trampoline, juggling and Dralions balancing on huge solid spheres. It was magical to see Photo: DXBthe Gurl artists who looked human the previous day transformed into these beautiful contortions. It was a unique experience with a live orchestra and two amazing singers churning out mesmerising music composed especially to suit each act. With no words exchanged yet so much said, it was an experience of a lifetime.

Organise Your Purse by hayla ghazal
Does your bag weigh a ton or two? Does it take you just a little over an hour to find one thing? If you just nodded twice, then this article is for you! Dump everything in your bag, repair any lining rips, and give each item a place. The secret to organizing your purse is to keep all your things in three separate pouches.
1
The first pouch should have a small bottle of moisturizer, sanitizer or wipes, nail filer, the nail polish tube of the same color you have on that day in case your nail polish chips off and a mini deodorant.
You will need a waterproof pouch to put a toothbrush, toothpaste and mints in. You can either keep a mini perfume bottle in a velvet pouch or in the first pouch.
3
2
Finally, in your third pouch, you should pack your eyeliner, lip balm, bobby pins tied together by thin hair bands, tissue and a small traveller’s makeup kit for touchups. Remember that since you are packing many things in your pouches, you’ll need to have the travelling size of all the items above. Voila, you now have everything packed in a way that allows you to find everything easily!
41
Organise Your Wallet If you seem to have difficulty finding where your credit card or money is stashed in your wallet every time you are at the cash register while several people are waiting behind you, then it is about time you organize that wallet of yours.
1
Take all the receipts, coins, identification cards and business cards out of your wallet and pull your trashcan closer. Stop using your wallet as a receipt-holder and throw away all the receipts you don’t need; like the ones you were given for buying donuts or your favorite meal. Get in the habit of taking receipts out of your wallet once a month and keep the important receipts for returns and warranties in a specific fold or some place else. If you hate carrying coins in your wallet, pop them into a jar every time you come home. Once the jar is full, take it to the closest bank or supermarket and ask to get them exchanged with paper money. You won’t believe how much those coins can add up to.
3
2
Your wallet is probably a lot lighter now, isn’t it? Next, you should keep count of how much money you have in your wallet and put them all in one place so that when you’re about to buy something, you know how much you have. If you follow these tips, you won’t have to worry about carrying a wallet that is about to burst out of your pocket. Keep in mind that having only a few folds in your wallet means less bulk.

Interviewing someone for a cover story can be a daunting task, especially when you’ve never met the interviewee. Are they funny? Stuck up? Sociable? Boring? Upon meeting Khaled bin Hamad, an Emirati manga artist on the verge of publishing his first sci-fi graphic novel, I was impressed; funny, humble, and effortlessly charming to all who spoke to him. Read on for one8one’s encounter with the author of Nasser’s Secrets and see for yourself. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself? My name is Khaled bin Hamad and I am a comic book writer and artist. I had initially started with the classical arts such as charcoals and oil painting but living in Japan introduced me to animation. When I came back home, I tried to take it to the next level. It’s not a hobby anymore because I decided to do more with it. Tell us a bit more about living in Japan? Why the change to animation? When I first started sketching, it was mainly traditional things like horses and falcons- ordinary things really. Anything out of the ordinary was considered ‘bad’ or even ‘forbidden’ in some cases, which actually made me stop for a few years. While I was in Japan, I picked up a manga comic titled Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue and it was BRILLIANT! Every single page was a piece of art, it was nothing like I’ve ever seen. Takehiko Inoue was hosting an exhibition around the same time and he had put up some panels of his comics on the walls and I realized that this was exactly what I wanted to do with my life. Who were your influences when making your comic? Definitely Hayao Miyazaki. He’s the first international animator to ever win an Oscar for his work. He’s a true inspiration and you can say that I follow his work religiously. On a more local level, I’ve been inspired by Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, the man behind The 99. The local industry tends to be very comedy-centric which I’m not a huge fan of, which is why I like The 99 so much.
“ I tried to introduce elements from science fiction but with a more Emirati influence. The events are set in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai.”
So tell us more about Nasser’s Secrets My work is titled “Nasser’s Secrets”. It’s the first ever sci-fi graphic novel to be published in the UAE. I tried to introduce elements from science fiction but with a more Emirati influence. The events are set in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The basic premise is that three teenagers disappear for three days only to come back 15 years older. The story talks about what happened to those three characters during those three days. What inspired you write about such a plot? I was an obsessive reader as a child. The first book I ever read cover to cover was an Arabic book entitled “80 Years Searching for an Exit” by Salah Hassan. The book stuck to me ever since, so I’ve been trying to do something similar. It’s
not a copy of course! Besides that, I’m an obsessive reader. In addition to novels, I also read scientific journals. This book is also inspired by scientific theories by Stephen Hawking.
Who would you say this comic series is aimed for? Geeks. I know the general impression of comic book fans is that they’re nerdy kids who never leave the house and tend to be socially awkward, but it’s really not When working on your novel, how did true. Last year, however, proved that. you make people aware of its existence? Especially at events like Comic Con and It initially started with a script. I didn’t Video Games Live you see the real fans draw any panels or anything, just the come to the surface. I didn’t know people bare bones script and some character cosplayed in this part of the world for sketches. I went to a lot of meetings but example! It was a great way to meet new it dawned to me that the people I was people! We ended up adding each other meeting with had wanted to take over on Twitter and Instagram and it was the whole project. I don’t know if I should amazing seeing their own work as well. say this, but this work is kind of like my There’s a thriving creative community own baby. If I wanted to see this thing here! This graphic novel is for these through, I wanted the outcome to be amazing people. exactly the way I wanted it to be. I then decided to just work on the whole thing by myself.
45
So why a graphic novel? Why not a comic book series? Because it has a beginning and ending. I always hated open comics because they just never end! You’ve had your first art show at the Cartoon Art Gallery in Dubai. What was that like? That wasn’t my first show; I’ve showcased oil paintings and charcoal sketches before. This on the other hand, is my first ever solo exhibition. It was so nervewracking to prepare for! It was really tough because a lot of work, dedication, and effort went into all this and I’m finally showing it all to the world. I had the impression that I would get negative feedback and anticipated that this would be brushed off since I thought comics were not really taken seriously. Honestly, I was very surprised with the response. I was amazed with the overall energy and the overwhelming praise that my work got. Great! However, the art show only showcased the prologue. Where do you plan on going now? I haven’t decided yet! I want to say three volumes with each volume focusing on a whole part of the story. The beginning of the novel would be a bit more mysterious with the exposition coming in the following volume. The final volume should hopefully conclude the whole story. You’re not planning on giving much of the plot, are you? You’ll have to read the novel! *laughs* Make sure to follow Khaled on: Facebook facebook.com/KhaledBinHamad twitter @kbinhamad

30 Days With a Blackberry Z10 So how did it feel to use the Z10? After several years of negative press and failed products (Storm anyone?) BlackBerry seems to finally have gotten their act together. While leaving the all-loved physical QWERTY keyboard in the past, this phone features a 4.2” display with a 356 ppi (CRISP!) resolution of 768x1280 pixels. The viewing angles are great and blacks are dark and deep. To some, Z10 could resemble an overall feel of iPhone 5, however, I wold have to disagree. The body is made of plastic and glass, it is thicker and heavier, however it still feels great in hand thanks to the rubbery coating on the back of the phone. This is, by no means, a typical Android-like giant phone (phablet) many expect from manufacturers today. BlackBerry Hub is just a swipe away (to the right), where all your accounts are gathered in one place; it supports BBM, LinkedIn, Messages, Emails, Facebook and twitter. Everything that requires your attention is placed there. BlackBerry is one widely-respected device in the country. One sees at least a few of them eveywhere they go! So it was only natural for me to get totally crazy when I received an invitation to the official BlackBerry 10 launch in Dubai on January 30th. Now, I know I could have written about it after a few days, however I wanted to take the device for a proper ride and use it for a month, in order to let you all get the picture of it is like to have a BlackBerry 10 device as your main phone. Before I get to it, I had never liked previous versions of the BlackBerry OS, however after watching Thorsten Heins introduce the BlackBerry 10, I couldn’t help but wonder how the overhaul would reflect on the common users like you and me. Here is something to get straight out of the way, BlackBerry 10 is a new, totally different, unrelated to anything from the past OS.
The whole system revolves around the QNX architecture that utilizes the real-time functionality of apps, meaning the apps are not paused when switched in and out from. The home screen is just a grid of icons, however, once the app is opened the home screen gets a widget (maxing out on eight in total). The cool thing about the widgets is the apps are not suspended and always run in the foreground; however, once the first opened app becomes the ninth; it is discarded. BlackBerry World app store is new and should be treated as such. Yes, the apps like Facebook, twitter and LinkedIn are already on board, there is still a long way to go. This is not anywhere near the app ecosystems of Apple or Google. The other awesome features I found were the time-shifting camera where one can edit a part of the image, thanks to the Z10’s ability to burst-shoot and “shift through time”; the video chat and screen sharing support on BBM (unavailable in the UAE); and the stunning predictive functionality of the keyboard that includes the words suggestions floating above the following characters. Features aside, this phone definitely requires some time to get used to and, for the BlackBerry lovers, some will be uncomfortable with the idea of letting the physical keyboard go (that’s until the Q10); however, it is one great device! The speakers are loud and clear and the network reception is excellent (minus the lack of LTE, it’s 2013). Overall, the Z10 was responsive, fast and comfortable to use. This is a device that could well be the third choice after what Apple and Google have to offer.
Lumia 620 A phone that packs a punch at an affordable price, with a range of colours to choose from, not only can you pick one color but with dual-shot shells you can pick two colors and combine them in layers, you can also choose whether it has a matte or gloss finish, this is a cool way to personalise your Lumia especially for those who love to colourise their life. The phone is beautifully designed with a 3.8 ‘’ ClearBlack LCD display screen that fits comfortably in your hand. The interface is brilliant in design; however, it isn’t as intuitive as on other platforms, but once you get used to it is easy to use. It has a 1GHz dual-core SnapDragon S4 processor, a primary 5 MP autofocus camera, a RAM of 512 MB, 8GB of internal storage and a SkyDrive and MicroSD support. One of the cool apps is ‘Cinemagraph’; it allows you to click a series of pictures then select the area you’d want to animate and then combines the multiple images, animating the selected area. In other words, it adds motion to still images. It is an awesome application for everyone, meaning there is no need to know anything about animation to be able to use it. Another app is ‘Smart Shoot’. Ever had a perfect picture except for the fact that your eyes were closed? Well, this app solves the problem! It takes a series of snaps in one click so then you can combine them creating the perfect shot.
Lumia 920 Nokia Lumia 920 is a typical flagship device one would expect from a modern smartphone manufacturer. It is fast, has an incredible display, top-level optical technology, large storage, great software… the list goes on, but I would like to focus on how it felt to use this beast. The screen is gorgeous, with its 768 x 1280 pixels at 4.5” and 332 ppi the text is crisp, colours are vibrant and, thanks to ‘Clear Black’ technology, the blacks are really black. Everything just looks cleaner, crisper, brighter and, overall great! The camera is in a class of its own. I would go as far as saying it is the best camera on a smartphone at the moment. The floating lens inside the 8MP rear camera does a brilliant job at stabilizing the image when recording a video. The software is interesting and refreshing. Windows Phone 8 is starting to gain some ground in the industry and it is now noticeably smoother as well as refined. However, I found it difficult to navigate through the mail app or the browser. Additionally, WP8 feels more closed than one would like to think. For instance, in order to connect to twitter via the app, one would have to use a Microsoft account irrespective of what account their twitter is registered under. On a positive side- the Live tiles are absolutely amazing, the People hub is useful for its simple way of keeping all your contacts in one place- be it phone, Facebook, LinkedIn or twitter. The most amazing thing for me was the clean look of the whole OS; this is where Microsoft truly shows off its design skills.
Now let’s say you want to know what’s around you? Here is where ‘City Lens’ comes in. Just hold up your phone and it will show you restaurants, shops, businesses etc. It even gives you reviews about the places, directions to them and links to their websites.
When speaking of the app ecosystem, I’d say Microsoft has a long way to go. There is not much to choose from, however it seems the ecosystem is improving on a daily basis, so this should change in the near future.
‘Me’ is another place where you can see everything related to you; you can post an update, check in, and set your chat status. It also shows you your notifications as well as your walls, as it connects all of your accounts such as Facebook, twitter, and Hotmail- you get to see everything in one place as well as easily post.
Overall, I could see this phone may suit people for many different reasons; be it the choice of colours, the beautiful camera, the gorgeous screen, the WP8 OS. I personally wish this phone was thinner and lighter. Lumia is 10.7 mm thick and 185 g heavy. It is not the lightest or even medium sized phone with a less than 5” screen for 2013.

Movies
GI Joe: Retilation
The Last Exorcism 2
Starring: Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Ray Park
Starring: Ashley Bell, Julia Garner, Spencer Treat Clark
The Hasbro property returns back to the screen after a decent first installment. This time, Dwayne Johnson heads the team of Joes to avenge an attack on the rest of the team and to stop a larger than life terrorist threat. Bruce Willis plays the original Joe, which is the perfect guy to do so.
The Croods Starring: Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone DreamWorks Animations does their own version of The Flintstones with The Croods, an animated adventure . Featuring voices like Nicolas Cage and looking quite beautiful while aiming to be a new franchise for the studio that is directly targeting Pixar lately.
While The Last Exorcism was a pretty creepy and underrated dramatic horror film, the sequel looks to basically just take the lead from that movie and make a more generic and broader horror film out of the story. We follow Ashley from the first film continuing her life but something haunts her still.
Oz The Great and Powerful
Jack The Giant Slayer
Starring: James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz
Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor
Sam Raimi’s big budget prequel to The Wizard of Oz explores the character of Oz and how he became the wizard we come to know as. Looking quite similar in tone to Disney’s own Alice in Wonderland, the film stars James Franco, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz.
Pulling a revisionist twist on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, Bryan Singer’s delayed blockbuster stars Nicholas Hoult, Olivia Wilde and Ewan McGregor. This is a story of a war between two worlds with a center character Jack- the farmer who fights for his kingdom and the princess’ love.
Jurassic Park 3D Starring: Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Pete Postlethwaite Steven Spielberg’s classic family adventure returns to screens in re-mastered 3D and looks quite epic. Now that Jurassic Park 4 is defintely coming, the studio wants us to familarize ourselves with the world of attacking dinosaurs once again. And this will successfully do just that.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver This is the magnificent story of a girl who gets to live her last day seven times. Part of the popular crowd, the most crush-worthy friend ever and with her three best friends in tow, Friday February 2nd should be just another amazing day in her perfect life. But it isn’t, it is however, a chance she gets, a chance to uncover the mystery surrounding her death and a chance to discover the true value of everything she is in danger of losing. We follow her as she lives that day, and as she ends it. Then as she does it over and over again, until the seventh day is done, and when it all ends. This 470 paged novel looks like a superficial teen story about the tragic love of the two shallowest people in high school. As you read this book and follow Samantha Kingston living her last day over and over, you realise what matters, what doesn’t, and how one tiny decision can change your life. It’s beautifully written and incredibly captivating the whole way through.
Bruiser by Neal Shusterman Bruiser is a fantastic novel split into four different narratives. As the story unfolds, the narratives switch between Tennyson- a 16 year old boy, Bronte- his (younger, by 15 minutes she’d like to remind you) twin sister, Brewster- Bronte’s friend, and Cole- his younger brother. One of the most striking features of this novel is the fascinating way in which Brewster’s chapters are written- in poetry. It’s a story for young people, with a captivating premise about the ultimate form of empathy, which is part of the allure. Tennyson isn’t surprised when his sister starts to see the loner, Brewster “Bruiser” Rawlins; after all he was voted ‘Most Likely to Get the Death Penalty’. What he doesn’t know is that there’s a reason that Brewster can’t have friends. Because when Brewster starts to care, really care, about someone, strange things start to happen, impossible things, unexplainable things, and Bronte and Tennyson know this, because it starts happening to them. This enticing novel will have you reading it start to finish in one sitting, the perfect read for an emotional roller coaster. Keep a box of tissues nearby.
Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli Stargirl as a book is many things, Stargirl as a character is a whole other story. Stargirl Caraway enters the scene when she moves into a new town in Arizona and enrols in Mica Area High School. The book is told from the point of view of one Leo Borlock, a young boy, a student in the high school, and as the story progresses the close friend of Stargirl Caraway, and eventually the ex of Stargirl Caraway. The story leads us through Stargirl’s arrival, her strange dances around the cafeteria accompanied by her playing a ukulele, her pet rat Cinnamon who stays in her sunflower canvas bag, and her insistence at singing happy birthday to the unfortunate souls cursed with being born on a day that means something to Stargirl. Or at least, that’s what they started off thinking. But soon, Stargirl becomes the most popular girl in school, until one day she isn’t anymore. The characters are enticing, eccentric and readers will be absolutely enamoured. This story has its ups and downs but unlike many other books, it has got a character full of mystery and unsolved questions. You will fall in love with this fantastic novel instantly.
Sara Naim PHOTOGRAPHER
“For me the interest comes from what photography can do as a medium in itself... “
Sara Naim is a New York based photographer who spent much of her early life in Dubai. Her interest in photography was ignited during a high school session where she had the opportunity to learn black and white darkroom photography, which was all it took. “I fell in love during my first class,” she tells one8one.
53
Photography by itself comprises of a broad spectrum of sub divisions. When asked what it is about the art that captured her attention, she replies, “For me the interest comes from what photography can do as a medium in itself, its failures and successes, questions of photography and truth, and its ability to preserve moments.”
by
KIRAN SUNNY
Her favourite subjects involve the most bizarre yet intriguing themes – she has captured sound vibrations progressing through milk, dead skin cells and light trapped in photographic negatives to mention a few. Yet, all her pictures seem to speak, silently provoking ideas in the viewers’ minds. Her work on sound vibrations, for instance, has a dual meaning; not only does it capture the essence of sound waves rippling through a liquid but it also brings to life the symphony composed by Beethoven – which in itself speaks of the moonlight’s reflection off the Austrian Lake. “For the past few years my work has discussed notions of the intangible. I’ve photographed dead skin cells, sound vibrations, light, and at the moment words. I find it interesting how photography can visualize the typically invisible,” she says. When asked how difficult it is to get established as a professional photographer, she responds, “Its a competitive industry, as all industries seem to be. It requires a lot of self-motivation, as no one will tell you to work on your projects from nine to five. Its a balance between that and doing freelance commercial projects to support the expenses of making your own art.” Sara has unveiled shows in France, London, Guernsey, Cologne and several in Dubai. Her parents have always been supportive of her art and she says, “My parents always supported my decisions and they’re proud that I followed my passion. Though art isn’t a typical path for most Arabs, they knew that with ambition comes success, whatever the chosen career is.”
The World of Pilates
Pilates, I was under the impression that it is simply faster Yoga. After a trip to Real Pilates and the concept was finally clear. Yes they are similar in the fact that both are mind-body emphasizing movements in which deep breathing and muscle stretching and relaxing are the base of both forms of exercise. I spoke with Real Pilates instructor Paul Thorney and he made many facts clear.
Pilates is a form of exercise routine that was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, which he then called Contrology. Contrology was a suitable term for this form of exercise, as it requires you to take complete control of every inch of your body. There are muscles that are extensively used and there are some that lay dormant in human body. Pilates attends to every single muscle of your body making you a healthier person. Joseph Pilates has stated that it develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit. Pilates is a favourite of many celebrities, sportsmen, actors and artists.
57
The first class I went in was a Pilates Core class. Real Pilates team informed me that this class is designed to help you establish core strength and stability. You learn simple, precise movements to increase your tone, develop flexibility, heighten mind-body awareness, and improve your posture. The people in the class sure looked pumped up in the beginning, but by the end of it half of them were famished and the other half was still energetic.
by swati kalani
The Reformer Pilates class tones muscles, strengthens the core and provides an invigorating total-body workout. It is done on machines and the classroom looks more like a gym than a studio. Pilates teaches you to focus your mind to every little muscle in your body. If done correctly you can feel the control you attain on your body. It is amazing how it trains you holistically on a physical and psychological level.

Celebrity Cricket
The one month long cricket tournament played between eight teams hailing from the entertainment industry of India, made a one-day stop at Dubai for 2two separate matches. The teams being the Kerala Strikers led by Padmashree Lt. Col. V. Mohanlal and the Mumbai Heroes with an array of stars including Suniel Shetty, Aftab Shivdasani, Sohail Khan, Sonu Sood, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Yash Tonk, Varun Badola - were very strategically picked considering the high Indian demographic of U.A.E. Of course the Chennai Rhinos and Bengal Tigers also had their supporters scattered over the massively beautiful Dubai Cricket Stadium.
The first match was played between the Kerala Strikers and the Bengal Tigers. It was a smash hit match with the Kerala Strikers winning the toss (as well as the match) and opting to bat first and hit a total score of 245 runs in mere 20 overs with a loss of just 2 wickets. The crowd, with a majority of Kerala Strikers supporters, was the noisiest in this match and went on a frenzy when their team won with amazing scores. The second match was studded with more globally renowned faces from Bollywood’s film and television industry. It was the Mumbai Heroes vs. two time defending champions the Chennai Rhinos. The cricket field looked like a film set where a lot of drama unfolded with so many handsome stars playing a sturdy game. The Mumbai Heroes with all the bruises and cramps, including a stretcher that was called onto the field, won the game by 19 runs. Shabbir Ahluwalia won ‘Man of the Match’ status. The celebrity element was amplified with the fact that even more actors and actresses came down to support their teams. The brand ambassadors, namely Bhavna & Mamta Mohandas for the Kerala Strikers, Raima Sen for the Bengal Tigers, Kangana Ranaut, Chitrangadha Singh and Nargis Fakhri for the Mumbai Heroes, all added to the glam quotient. Bengal Tigers owner Boney Kapoor and wife Sridevi with both their daughters, made a pretty picture together for the team.
A very amusing and entertaining event, to watch the unbeatable on-screen heroes being attended to by medics and physiotherapists every 2 overs on an average. Of course reality dawns, they are human too, just like us where a twisted ankle, a muscle cramp or the tough cricket ball hitting the face hurts them just the same way it would hurt us. The whole ‘desi’ Indian element was pumped up with the DJ churning out each team’s signature tune as well as current Indian hit numbers. The league ends on March 10 in Bengaluru. How Loud Is Loud? by nadia harneker
“Music makes the world go round. It’s almost as if the world was one giant record player” as they say. “Forget record players, where did I leave my iPod?” is what WE say. What would we do without our iPods, headphones or earphones? Boredom would reach a new level and just imagine how journeys to school or work would drag! It’s as if you could put your earphones on, and turn the volume up loud enough to escape the world, but be careful; you don’t want to turn it up too loud and ultimately escape the beautiful sounds the world has to offer. Yes, we’re talking hearing loss due to LOUD noises being too loud.
The Facts The intensity of a sound is measured in decibels (dB), so, for example, the sound intensity of a quiet whisper is 30 dB, and a normal conversation is 60 dB. Some earphones can produce up to 115 dB, which is the same as the sound intensity of a drill; imagine having the sound of a drill right in your ear! However, listening to music with a sound intensity of 115 dB is worse than hearing a drill a few metres away because the sound of the drill is diffused by going into the surroundings, whereas the sound from earphones is going directly into the inner ear. More than 15 minutes of exposure to a sound of 115 dB can result in hearing loss. Hearing a sound of 125 dB causes pain due to structures in the inner ear being damaged, and 115 dB is awfully close to 125 dB.
“Imagine having the sound of a drill right in your ear!”
Worried? Take the Test 1. Set the volume on a radio to a level where you can barely hear the music.
Take It Easy • Be cautious of listening to music with earphones in loud areas. This is because the earphones compete with the background noise, so we tend to turn the volume up to block out the sounds. • Use a higher quality set of earphones that will isolate the background noise.
2. Turn the radio off, put your earphones on, and listen to music on the volume you would normally listen at. 3. After listening to the music for the amount of time you would normally listen to, remove your earphones and turn the radio back on. Can you hear the radio now? If not, consider listening to music at a lower volume and for shorter periods of time to reduce risks of hearing loss.
• Turn down the volume of the music and gradually increase the volume until it feels comfortable.

Tips from a pro What is shutter speed? This mechanism is the one that involves a lot of technical understanding. Basically the shutter speed controls the amount of light that reaches the sensor or film for a measured length of time. The faster the shutter speed, for example 1/500 second, the less amount of light reaches the sensor and vice verse, for example 1/8 second shutter speed you want to use in the dark environment.
Rachel Mok
Christopher Rajan
How does it affect your image? Besides the amount of light, shutter speed can also affect the amount of blur in a photograph. The faster the shutter speed, the sharper a moving subject will be. For example, you want to keep a moving subject sharp while blurring the background, you set shutter speed around 1/30 second (during daytime), focus on the subject, and pan the camera in the same direction they are moving towards. You will get a nice feeling of movement in your image. by

The Steps As I look down the memory lane... In the shadows of my past... I saw the first baby steps I took... Along the shore of my life... For my cute baby feet... Each and every step was a feat... Even the pebbles seemed to be a hill… Though not enough to stand my will... My steps moved further... Expecting bigger obstacles farther... With all my strength gathered… But my little feet barely bothered... My steps were excited rather... To win the obstacles over… And as I passed each of them.. It dawned on me that there is no defeat... As I move up my memories... Passing shadows of my past... To bear the heat of future… Through the lights of the present... My baby feet have grown... And the pebbles are now just stones... But my steps now walk astray… And my will have left the way.
Somewhere along the path... My feet have lost its pace... My strength has drained... And my steps are now so strained... Then I turn to look back my way... And I see my baby steps far away... Fighting against each and every odd… Oh… and there I stand so awed... Realizing nothing can get me down... When my baby steps have grown… Now nothing can go past me… Where my steps don’t make a mark... by

Hope There is a part of me that wants to live, To learn, to grow, accept and forgive. To see the world that I haven’t seen, And explore the places I haven’t been. Sometimes I miss the times gone, Remember memories when I’m all alone, I see the regrets, the guilt, the pain And after years of hiding within, I feel no shame! Maybe time does heal wounds, Saves the broken heart, From its inner glooms. And brings forth a soul so pure, One that left back a disease, After it found the cure! Now I see life from eyes that aren’t mine, I see a world where Darkness too shines, And hope seems like a dear friend, Which holds on to me as I lift and bend. There is a new day after every night, A winner after every fight, And I can only turn back and smile, For I have been strong enough to stand up, When life had been pulling me down all this while! I see things I never noticed before, And instead of wishing it to end, I urge to have it more! There is a lot to look ahead, A lot more to see, And at least now I don’t think What I was and what I could be! by

Burst Your Bubble Ever go looking to find information to answer a simple question, but wound up sitting with a complex heap of more questions and some confusing answers? Is gum good or bad for your health? A long time ago chewing gum was made from a natural rubber, from the sap of the sapodilla tree which is native to Central America. The sap was known as chicle. Later on chemists got involved in the gummaking business and developed synthetic ingredients to mimic chicle and even improve the taste of gum with a range of flavorful additives. Today’s various brands of gum include many types of ingredients and some are questionable and possibly downright suspect.
Why isn’t it easy to find out if gum’s ingredients are safe, harmful, or even toxic? The International Chewing Gum Association asserts, “Only safe and approved ingredients are used in the manufacturing of chewing gum.” They also report that chewing gum is good for oral hygiene. On the other hand, an alternative medicine website deems chewing gum ingredients to be unsafe. They say gum labels are “deceptive” and ingredients like aspartame and sugar alcohols are toxic to the body. So, without conclusive answers from internationally recognized authorities on the matter, should one chew gum or not? Let us look at some health benefits and risks and decide for ourselves.
Health Benefits • Reliefs Heartburn: The saliva you create while chewing gum naturalizes the digestive stomach acid that had leaked into the esophagus. It also helps force fluids back into the stomach and therefore provides heartburn relief. Chewing gum for 30 minutes can give you relief from heartburn for up to three hours. • Kills bacteria and freshens breath: The more saliva you have in your mouth the fewer bacteria survive there. Some gum that includes a specific ingredient called xylitol increases salivation and prevents bacteria. Cinnamon flavors are the best to get rid of bacteria. • Stops food cravings: Those who chew gum after lunch eat fewer high-calorie snacks and have less feeling of hunger and cravings for sweets. The body burns around 10 calories an hour just by chewing.
Health Risks • Has neurological symptoms: People who are sensitive to aspartame, which is an artificial sweetener, may experience symptoms like headaches, dizziness, skin reactions, seizures and even depression. But for those of us who are a bit picky there are gums available that are sugar-free, aspartame-free, dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan. • Creates diseases: If your gum isn’t sweetened with aspartame then that means it is full of sugar, which is most likely the single greatest dietary cause of illnesses like cancer and diabetes. • Ruins your teeth: If you have braises that contain mercury you should avoid gum altogether. The few that have amalgam fillings should be very careful because constant chewing can break it down and result in the release of toxic mercury. It can also ruin all the work an orthodontist.
To chew or not to chew? That is the question. The ancient Greeks valued “moderation” in all things. Perhaps a bit of gum chewing isn’t likely to lead to an early grave; on the other hand, it seems there’s no definitive reason to believe that excessive chewing will.

Q. I’ve been living with a stutter for years.
Unfortunately, there is no cure or solution to ending the stutter that controls and manifests my everyday life. It seems as though the only thing I can do is accept it. For years I have been trying to come to terms with my disability; however I can’t get rid of the shame I feel for myself. Recently the negativity I feel towards my stutter has gotten to a point where I find myself apologizing to people when I stutter in front of them. To make it worse, as my stutter progresses, my confidence begins to reduce dramatically. How am I supposed to forgive myself for something that isn’t even my fault? How do I regain my confidence and face my flaw in the face? Please help!

Stutter This is a very sensitive topic that I want to thank you for sharing with us here at one8one. It’s important to really understand what stuttering is so I want to start by briefly educating our readers about its’ causes. Stuttering is a speech impediment. Most cases begin during childhood with some cases lasting throughout a person’s life. Some people repeat words while others precede words with sounds like ‘um’ or ‘oh’. A stutter does not limit a person’s physical or mental abilities and it most certainly does not mean that a person with it is not intelligent. Thus this is not a ‘disability’. Please remember that the greatest challenge for a person with a stutter is that they are concerned by the reaction that they receive from others while they speak. From your letter, I noticed a few things that I would like to share with you now. First, although you have had the stutter for years, you did not mention whether you have been evaluated by a certified speech-language pathologist (SLP). I strongly encourage you to do so if you haven’t because they will be able to assist you with diagnosing the stutter and then helping you with tools and tips to either eliminating it or lessening the stutter. Contact your hospital of choice and inquire about their SLPs. Second, I notice that you describe your stutter as a ‘disability’ and you seem to really believe that it is a ‘disability’. Sadly, this is not helping you at all. A stutter is a speech challenge that can be helped with the right support. Stop believing that you have something that ‘disables’ you from doing something physical or mental. A stutter is a speech challenge but it doesn’t stop you from sharing your messages. Shame, negativity, low confidence and apologising for your stutter are all judgements that you are making of yourself. All people, no matter their race, culture or upbringing, all have challenges to overcome. Yours is a stutter. There is no need to forgive yourself for having a stutter and anyone who cares or is an educated persona will not think any different about you because you have a stutter. My suggestions for you are as follow: • Seek out an SLP and learn more about stutters • Write a journal and track your emotions before, during and after conversations. When do you stutter the most? • When you know that you have to make a speech or a presentation, prepare yourself as much as you can. Take notes and keep them handy because being nervous can make you stutter more. • Start noticing the greatness that exists in you. Are you creative? Do you get top grades? What are your strengths? • Join a support group like this one on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ stutteringfoundation • Self confidence and shame hold hands. Notice the messages that you are telling yourself. Are they empowering or are they disabling you? The only disability I notice is the one that you are giving yourself through your beliefs and your self-chatter.
Jealousy Jealousy is one of the most talked about feelings on the planet. What is it? In a nutshell, it is a negative emotion that demonstrates that we are not aligned with something in our life. That’s it…simple! Sometimes we call it ‘envy’ and some professionals even rank envy as the lesser negative emotion. However, they are just signals to tell ourselves that something within us is not right. Looking at your letter, I wonder why you are comparing yourself to your friends. Without having you here in front of me, I can only challenge you to answer the following questions. 1. 2. 3. 4.
What is your confidence like? What do you doubt about yourself that you believe your friends have and you don’t? Is it a skill? A talent? What do you see in your self-image that makes you fear will be noticed by the public when your friends achieve and you don’t? What are your deepest fears? What are you afraid that you are missing out on when your friends achieve top grades? Notice the insecurities that you have. Where are they rooted from? When did they start?
Next, you asked if jealousy is a part of a person’s life and does everyone feel this way? The answer is jealousy is a human emotion. Many people label it as a ‘negative/bad emotion’. My belief is that it is simple a signal. It is a cue to tell ourselves that we are not in-balance from within. Life is not a competition. There is no prize for the winner at the finish line. We are all on our own personal journeys. Using jealousy as a resource and not a judgment will help you in understanding your feelings and forgiving yourself. We are all human and this is a human emotion. Share your feelings with someone that you can trust. Don’t be alone because feeling lonely causes anxieties to rise and little things soon become ginormous things.
Q. I’m jealous. I’m jealous of people who
succeed at what I do. I’m jealous of them even if I love them or like them or respect them. Even when I pretend to be happy when my friends get good news/good grades, the truth is I feel like I swallowed a spoonful of battery acid. For days afterwards I go around feeling queasy and sad, silently thinking why not me? I’m 17. I’m currently in the process of doing my A-levels (which is turning out to be more difficult than I imagined). I received above average gcse grades in previous years, and do plenty of community service outside of school. Several people in my school have gotten the sort of grades and opportunities that I dream of getting. A couple of these people are jerks, so I don’t feel guilty for resenting their good fortune, but a few of them are good people whom I like and respect and, worst of all, one is a guy I count among my very best friends. It makes me sick that I don’t feel happy for them, especially when it comes to my close friend, but there it is. When I think of their successes, it only reminds me of what I don’t have. I want what they have. How do I deal with this? Is jealousy simply part of a person’s life? Are my feelings what everyone is feeling, even when they pretend otherwise? Is it possible to purge these negative feelings and feel other, positive things when I hear someone else’s fabulous news?

Your imagination is going wild and everything seems to be interesting at this point. The first part of the month may be a little dull and uninteresting, but that will not last too long. If you don’t like something in your life take action and change it right away. You make a very good impression when you first meet people so take advantage of that and make new and lasting friends.
There are some issues you will need to work out with your friends. But that is only because you did not take care of them straight away when they happened. You will meet an old friend and enjoy their company. This will be a cheerful month and you will go out and have a lot of fun. You may want to perfect your social skills even more now that you’re seeing so many people.
Your top priorities are work/ studies and friends. You need your friends to be there for you, support you and understand you. You need them around but hope that they know that without you asking. When making new friends you have high expectations, which will not serve you well. Be nice and communicate what is on your mind and things will magically become easier.
Get together with your friends and talk about the future and your goals. Put together a vision board and look at it every day. You’d be surprised how much of that will manifest in real life. This will be a month with great learning and experiences. You are interested in intellectual conversations this month that give you great knowledge.

The first part of the month is pretty calm and quiet. It is the time to look at your inner self and see yourself with your own eyes. This meditation could take you to past experiences and old memories which you will enjoy. Once you’re done rummaging through your memories and emotions you will have a broader perspective of life.
This month is full of ups and downs. You are focusing all your attention and emotions on one particular person that is very close to you. Some events this month will be important and you may be changing your mind about decision you had already made. Think rationally and be sincere.
This month you are going to be too busy for your friends but you will catch up with them by the middle of the month. You have so much energy and enthusiasm you will find it hard to relax. You will get even bigger results if you partner up with a friend to complete one of your big projects. Think carefully about how you tackle your problems, find the best way so you can reuse the strategy when things get tough.
This is a time where you tend to like people easily and accept them for whoever and whatever they are. Try to make some changes in the way you work or study, because otherwise, things will tend to happen by themselves and they may not go in the direction you want them to. Don’t expect life to be easy, but always expect to overcome obstacles.

You need a lot of affection and someone to discover the world with you. You’re looking for some kind of change and adventure. Pay close attention to the terms and conditions when finding a new job or signing up for something. Your family is always there for you to give you moral, or even financial, support when you need it. You will have a need for artistic expression this month.
You don’t believe in the beautiful words you’re told any more and need proof, facts and statistics when it comes to decision making. Live life to the fullest and enjoy everything it has to bring. It’s time to implement your great ideas, start new projects and make big decisions. Nothing comes easy but obstacles are always overcome and results are achieved.
Money seems to be very important to you this month and it will come easily. All you need to do is be available to do the job and offers will come up from nowhere. Try to stay calm when things don’t go too smoothly; everything works out well eventually. Be cautious where you spend and what you invest in. Once you begin seeing results at the end of the month you will get a surge of energy that will drive you forward.
You shine this month; you radiate with charm, elegance, strength and confidence. Everyone wants to know what you’ve been up to. If little misunderstandings occur try and solve them right away and be diplomatic. Life is being very generous to you this month and you will be successful. Keep meeting new people and they will be drawn to work with you.

You are not expressive at all and keep a constant poker face. You may sometimes wish you could express yourself better, but you don’t feel like you know how to do it. You don’t like to be around too many people in one go and need your space to introspect and recharge because being around groups can be draining for you.
11-17 So and So:You always know what you’re feeling, but sometimes avoid expressing it. Most of the time you prefer to keep your thoughts to yourself. You like to keep some things private and share only if you think it’s appropriate. You need time to think things through before you blurt them out which may come in handy sometimes.
18-27 Italian Style:You are the type of person who thinks a lot. You have so many thoughts it’s difficult to express them all. Whether it’s poems, book reviews, game reviews, fiction or nonfiction: if you write, we want to read. Like Fashion? No matter what shape or size you are, we’re looking for character. If you’ve got what it takes to be in front of the camera we want you in our photoshoot. Play an instrument? Let us hear about it! Read a book lately? Send us a review and give others the chance to read it or leave it. Love sports? Write to us so we can let everyone else know how much fun your sport is and how they can join in. Play video games? We want to know what the best and most disappointing games are that you’ve played. You never know what you might win just by giving us your opinion. Like jokes? Knock knock on our email and make us laugh! Are you an art lover? Show us what you can do. Beautiful things are meant to be seen. Love your camera? Pick it up and send us your best photos to be published. Know of a cool event? Let us know and we’ll be there to take pictures. Do you like to act? Young thespians, show us what you can do. Watch movies? Tell us all about the latest movies you’ve seen so everyone else can know if it’s worth watching or not. Listen to music? What’s your favourite band? Write about them so everyone can have a listen.
