Editor’s Letter

The end and beginning.

What’s nice about living in the UAE is that you get to have two New Years. One that we share with everyone else in the world and another that begins in September. Whether you go to school, university or even have a job, you want to get on that airplane, put your headphones on, listen to your favorite bands (p.18), watch as many movies as possible and arrive somewhere beautiful where you can plan and set your goals for the whole year ahead. This coming year is very exciting for me. I have decided to challenge myself; to find time to watch more movies (p.45), read more funny books (p.44), have more fun, act silly and dance ballet to Epica when no one’s watching (p.16). Don’t you look back and wonder what happened to that little person that used to get excited over splashing someone with a water gun (p.46)? Our fun has evolved. We now have that same excitement over getting the latest smart phone (p.40) and enjoy amazing computer games like Sim City (p.10). If you, as a little kid, had all the technology we have now, would you go skate boarding (p.26) outside or stay glued to your gadgets?

N.C. I’m sure it won’t be a surprise if i say that I’m one of your regular readers & I absolutely LOVE one8one magazine. I’m a Media student at Murdoch University Dubai. That’s actually where I discovered this magazine; I would run into my library every morning just to check when the new issue would be sent. First of all, I personally would like to tell you guys; that this magazine is a brilliant idea; I love how it combines fashion, photography, articles etc. Secondly; after seeing some amazing pictures by brilliant photographers; I decided to give it a shot too. J.M. My main goal, to say in few words, is to touch lives and inspire people by my writing - mostly students like me. Thanks for helping me spread positivity, kindheartedness and love for neighbors.

Atiyya Laher I would have loved to start on the negatives of working at one8one magazine except I can’t seem to find any. My experience over the past month of working here has been tremendously wonderful. Not only has it been a stepping stone in my life but given me the opportunity to discover more about myself as the vast world awaits me out there. The ambience in the office is inviting while the people are unimaginably fun to work with. In a short period of time one8one has become a piece of home to express myself, to share and to learn just about anything. Hoping that I have done a good job while working here, I doubt I will ever be able to say goodbye. So here’s to one month at the one8one magazine and the many more incredible months to come; it’s always going to be a blast!

S’cool Stuff Christo and Jeanne-Claude Awards 2014 opening at NYUAD World-renowned artist Christo, famous for his thought-provoking public art pieces, visited the NYU Abu Dhabi campus on May 9 for the announcement of the 2014 Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award’s opening. The Award, which accepts proposals for public art pieces from UAE student applicants, has carved for itself an artistic presence among the community, while weaving a new network of young artists. An entrant from last year’s competition, Suheyle Takesh believes the experience is valuable for any young artist and encourages everyone to try. “Let your big ideas out,” Takesh said. “Even if you don’t win, you’ll still get a lot of feedback and advice from the panel on how to go about your piece.” The winning artwork will receive USD 20,000. This year, Christo made a generous personal contribution of USD10,000 to assist the winning artist in furthering the trajectory of his or her work. The entry deadline is October 31. Submission forms may be downloaded from the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation website. by

Dubai British School Students head to Cambridge! James had returned to the UK after completing his GCSE exams at DBS and got a full time job in Pizza Hut, as he felt university was not for him. However after a difficult eight months he returned to Dubai and was convinced by his DBS teachers to start again. They encouraged him to apply. He said, “without DBS I would not have applied to university, let alone get an offer from Cambridge”. James has been a student of DBS since Year 8, when he came to Dubai with his family. Gabriele joined DBS in Year 12 after moving to Dubai from Uganda. He had previously been resident in Italy for five years and Nigeria for eight years. He found the school support for his application essential to his success. DBS started with the written application process, which is earlier than the general application dates; for Oxbridge it is October rather than January. Once the written application was submitted, the interview preparation started. Mr. Drennan; Head of Careers at DBS, held weekly interview sessions followed with two mock interviews, the panel consisted of students and teachers. Gabriele felt focusing on the application preparation and his parental advice helped him, “Don’t be put off by the statistics, someone has to get the places, even if there is only two!” said his parents. Most students will dismiss applying to the world’s best universities. However James Edwards and Gabriele Ejikeme decided to go ahead and try. Gabriele has been offered a place on Land Economy and James will study History. When asked how they felt pre-exams both exuded confidence and seemed extremely hopeful for the future.

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patrons of the Arts Awards 2013 At a ceremony that highlighted the remarkable achievements and evolution of Dubai’s cultural scene, the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) honoured 40 organisations and individuals with the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patrons of the Arts Awards for their committed support and generous contribution to strengthening the cultural and arts sector of the city. The 40 honourees contributed over AED170 million to the arts scene in 2012, underlining the growing contribution of organisations and individuals to nurture and build various artforms and cultural initiatives elevating Dubai’s status as a global cultural hub. A highlight of the event was the visual interpretation of Rare Proverbs, a poem written by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President & Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, by an ensemble of Emirati, local, and international artists. The audience was equally captivated by the evocative performance of the UAE National Anthem by the UAE National Symphony Orchestra. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patrons of the Arts Awards was launched in 2009 to strengthen awareness on patronage, and the role it plays in strengthening the growth of the arts industry. The honours were presented in four categories: ‘Distinguished Patrons of the Arts,’ ‘Patrons of the Arts,’ ‘Supporters of the Arts,’ and ‘Friends of the Arts,’ for their financial or in-kind contributions towards the four disciplines of art – visual arts, performing arts, film, and literature – from January to December 2012.

Paul Smith recently held an evening of artistic flair at the Archives. Engulfed by the soothing embrace of nature, guests were nestled in a green haven surrounded by trees, art, and fashion, a unique combination that is characteristic of the British brand. Paul Smith had invited three talented artists to immerse themselves in the Paul Smith universe for inspiration, the fruits of which were created live at the event. Yasmin Richie, an artist from London, exhibited her Storylines Uncut installation at the event, “All the designs in the Storyline collection are inspired by films. I wanted to show the colour palette of a film without any imagery and the stripes were the perfect way to do it - they are abstract and colourful yet understated, very much like the Paul Smith stripes. What I love about the Paul Smith brand is that it’s very classic and elegant, but has an eclectic edge to it that makes the brand fun and playful while still being quintessentially British. These are very much the values I try to adhere to in my own works so it’s an honour for me to be associated with Paul Smith.” UBIK, who recently showcased his work at the Pavillion, conducted an intense session of live sketching on a large blank canvas at the event, “‘I have taken my inspiration from the textiles in this season’s Paul Smith Women collection. The floral print on one of the dresses really caught my eye and I have adapted it in my style on a large canvas.” At the last art station, Mariam Yakan sat under a clothing line, where iconic Paul Smith items hung, and illustrated the event, as well as drew caricatures of the guests, and hung them on the lines. 9

Gaming

Sim City (Mac, PC) While the PC version was released in March, we thought it would be appropriate to mention it now, as the Mac version is scheduled for a June 11 release date. This is, by far, the most detailed city management game in the market today. With its Glass Box engine, Sim City’s simulation is close to perfection; the graphics are outstanding, allowing the player to see on street level as well as have a bird’s eye view. The game requires a constant network connection, which has upset many gamers around the world. According to Maxis, the Sim City servers provide the much-needed simulation, so the neighbouring cities in your region can properly sync finances and other developments in time. Sim City also offers network gaming, allowing players to share a region, exchange resources, team up and build Great Works (International Airport, Space Centre, Archeology and more). Overall, this game is addictive; one can spend hours on end playing and developing cities. The only drawback is the small size of the cities.

Deadpool (Xbox 360, PS3, PC) Deadpool is a third person action game, which revolves around a mission that Deadpool has accepted. The mission is to assassinate a corrupt media mogul, who produces television programs such as ‘Jump the Shark’ where stars have to jump over a tank filled with hungry white sharks. The game also involves Genosha, a former mutant haven, where Mister Sinister is searching for new DNA to build his armies. The game has appearances from other comic book characters such as Wolverine, Domino, Cable Rogue and others. The arsenal of choice in the game is big hammers, swords, guns and sai with a combination of shooting and melee. Also, Deadpool speaks to you and suggests new moves as you play.

Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery (PS Vita) Jacob is a recluse, as he spends most of his time outdoors with his parents where he has been home schooled. So his parents decide that summer camp would be good for him to mingle with kids his own age and make a few friends. This is totally not what Jacob had in mind for fun, but he quickly changes his mind when he stumbles onto the Bigfoot mystery, which adds a twist to his summer camp experience. The game is filled with weird adventures, lovely characters and a bunch of brain teasing puzzles that range from simple to classic. The feel of the game is a distinctively sketchy with a unique artistic style.

Injustice: Gods Among Us (Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, iOS) Lines are blurred between good and evil as our heroes and villains duke it out in an epic battle of a massive scale. Injustice: the Gods Among Us features DC comic icons such as Batman, Cyborg, The Flash, Harley Quinn, Nightwing, Solomon Grundy, Superman and Wonder Woman. Some of the features are robust DC comics roster; master god-like powers, uncontainable battles, original DC comics saga set in iconic environments and destructive fighter mode in which the world is a weapon.

Company of Heroes 2 (PC) The game is set in World War II, same as the first; however, this one focuses on the Eastern Front with a new fraction of the Soviet Red Army. The story is told through the flashbacks of a Soviet Army Lieutenant, Lev Abramovich, as he is interrogated about his experiences during the war. To better emulate true combat conditions they have introduced a line of sight that represents the troops true visibility range depending on the weather conditions. Weather conditions are a major factor to affect gameplay; walking through snow will reduce your speed while staying too long in the cold could kill you. The game also has side quests where it offers the players a chance to protect civilians.

Outlandish

13

With the recent release of their fifth album, Outlandish brings the hip hop-heavy beats and Eastern-influenced electro vibes back. We sit down to talk about their music and to find out a little more about the band who has gained a steady place in the music industry. How would you describe your music in your own words? We use different genres within the hip hop area, trying to incorporate every style we can think of to fit it in a certain genre. We would describe ourselves mostly as an urban group. What makes your newest album different from all the previous ones? When we look at our previous albums we see how we develop as human beings; music follows us. We never follow trends; of course we keep our ears open to what’s happening. Our first album was released in 2000 and we were just teenagers at the time; it’s different to what we make now since we have matured. We get to write about things and put our feelings onto paper. We get to show the world our lives in our own perspective through our music. Describe a normal day... I’m the one jumping on people’s beds to get them up in the morning because both my kids and wife are too lazy to get up. I’m a morning person. Here in Denmark we have all these schedules, we have a specific amount of time for each thing. You have responsibilities, you need to drop your kids off to school, go to work, pick them up, go to the studio and be creative, then come back home. It’s pretty normal stuff that we do; people often tend to think that artists have different lifestyles when it’s really the same. Have you ever visited the UAE? Yes. We love coming to the UAE. We love the weather, the environment, and the people. Every time we’ve been to the Emirates, people have been showing us a lot of support. Also, we love the diversity, different cultures and different people coexisting side by side. That’s what makes the Emirates so vibrant and alive. What advice would you give to a newcomer? Practice always makes perfect. If you’re original and good with teamwork. You can’t make it anywhere by yourself, you need people to support and help you throughout everything. by

Never Let Me Go

Cast: Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart

Cast: Anders Danielsen Lie, Hans Olav Brenner, Ingrid Olava

Cast: Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Izzy Meikle-Small

Based on the book by Jack Kerouac, it follows the story of Sal and Dean looking for the light at the end of their acrossthe-states journey. It did well as an adaptation, but it wasn’t as enjoyable because it was so messy, even though the book is very much like that. The film follows the beat and the rhythm of the jazz Kerouac writes. It is an excellent movie, just try not to compare it to the book.

This film has instantly become a favorite of ours. A former addict is let out of rehab, and on his first day, he rekindles with his past, both good and bad. With a script that feels all too natural and a soft color palette, it seems like it’s a film that can hit you on a multitude of different levels, depending on how relative the main charachter is to the viewer.

Never Let Me Go is a beautiful movie. It is one woman’s account of looking back into her school years at Hailsham, a school of unorthodox teaching. She and her friends were brought up differently and, perhaps, regrettably. It does much justice to the book with regards to the characters and the graceful pace that the story is unveiled. It is one of the few great book adaptations, making it a real treat for those who’ve read the book.

Epica

by Serena umer

Epica is a symphonic metal band with a progressive metal edge. Hailing from the Netherlands, Epica has built up a huge following around the world. I sat down with guitarist and vocalist, Mark Jansen to talk about their upcoming album, how things are progressing for the band so far and their excitement about headlining this year’s Dubai Rock Fest. Do you get nervous before a performance? It depends on the show and how long we didn’t play for before the show. If we haven’t been playing for a while there would be more nerves. How often and for how long do you practice? As a band we don’t often rehearse, just for big shows and a new album. But at home we prepare our parts very well. Before every tour I make sure that I can play all the songs of the set.

Is there anything you feel strongly about that you’re trying to highlight? I can enjoy the interaction between crowd and band a lot. The more energy, the better our performance. Especially in Latin America, we play a lot of these kind of shows. I love them. If you were a type of food, what type of food would you be? I am already food, just don’t show up in areas where too many hungry sharks swim. How was celebrating your 10th Anniversary with your concert ‘Retrospect’ in the Netherlands like? It was amazing, celebrating the 10 years with all those fans. A sold out one [show] in our own country. 4,500 people! It was an evening full of highlights which passed by very fast as we had so many things to think about during the show. Since your band has been around so long, are you noticing a second generation of fans at your shows? Yes, we have seen kids coming to our shows who are adults now and also young adults who are bringing their kids to the shows. So there will be enough new Epica fans for the future. What should I expect from your new album? We have started to work on the new album and it’s a real band process; we work in small groups on new songs and, so far, have written already about 14 new tracks. I am very happy with the results so far. What inspired your wardrobe in your concerts/music videos? We work with a designer who knows our taste. She designs great clothes and hopefully we can work together for a long time. It’s important to think about all aspects of the show, also the clothes. Are you excited to play at Dubai Rock Fest with all the other headliners? Absolutely! It’s our first time and we cannot wait. New experience and new energy!!!

Album Reviews by

Serena Umer

Daft Punk ‘Random Access Memories’ Let’s face it, the life of dance music has been sucked out years ago and has been replaced with a collection of dialogue samples from random YouTube videos and bass drops. But fear not, because our robot overlords have brought back the organic feel of dance music with Random Access Memories. Daft Punk is not aiming to improve dance music, they are aiming to change your perspective on what music you can and want to dance to. In short, Random Access Memories is not the album the world wanted, but it’s the album that the world deserves.

Vampire Weekend ‘Modern Vampires Of the City ’ Vampire Weekend have naturally matured not only in terms of songwriting but also in terms of musical aspiration. There is absolutely no hiding from the fact that Modern Vampires of The City is one of the nicest sounding indie pop albums made in recent memory; every song is constructed with an exceptional emphasis on beauty where the sound blossoms into a very warm sense of distance. Apart from a few let downs, the album is an entertaining batch of songs that are taken to the next level by flawless execution.

Little Boots ‘Nocturnes’ Little Boots’ Nocturnes, like all great albums, is a journey from beginning to end. “Motorway” is a haunting opener for the journey. It soaks the listener in and provides a transcending experience. “Confusion”, “Broken Record”, and “Shake” all provide an understanding of heart-breaking disco songs. They empower you and enable you to move past heartbreak to celebrate the nightlife with “Beat Beat”. It’s a dreamy lullaby and one that you can easily find yourself getting lost in while it plays on repeat as the night drifts away. Highly recommended.

Out & About

Swan Lake In costumes dripping with glistening crystals, the ballerinas of the Moscow Royal Ballet scuttled onto stage, satin toes pointed, wrists bent and elegantly poised. Assembling form, they waited among the hushed anticipation of the audience for the Danse de petits cygnes, arguably one of the most famous dances in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, to begin.

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake tells the classic story of a princess-turned-swan in thrilling pirouettes, leaps, and pas de chats. A favorite among ballet-lovers, Swan Lake is a familiar tale to many. Even those unacquainted with the ballet may have encountered manifestations of its classic tale, be it inside the pages of childhood storybooks or the dark twists of Hollywood’s psychological thriller Black Swan (2010). The performance marked the Royal Moscow Ballet’s first visit to Dubai, where they performed at the World Trade Center from May 9 – 14. The organisers (Alchemy Project) brought 37 dancers to the UAE to perform. The show opened to the rosy setting of Prince Siegfried’s palace, where dancers raised goblets in celebration and bounded across the stage. This swirl of opulent costumes and cheerful music was starkly juxtaposed against the next scene, which was backlit with hushed tones of blue as the audience met, for the first time, Odette at her famous lake.

Odette is the lead ballerina role. A princess who transforms into a swan under the enchantment of a sorcerer named Von Rothburt, Odette is cursed to spend her days as a swan and only regain human form at night. When Prince Siegfried stumbles upon Odette’s lake, their chance meeting is pockmarked by the occasional dark flash of Von Rothburt leaping across stage, a menacing presence in the background.

The show was comprised of two acts in total, with a brief intermission in between. Dancers were accompanied by the Royal Moscow Orchestra, whose members did not play in a pit but rather in front of the stage. Act Two left several members of the audience on their feet for a standing ovation. Despite some of the technical mix-ups and blunders in the show, I was appreciative – optimistic that the performance had set a precedent for future cultural events such as this one to come and visit the UAE.

Monster Jam

It was a fine day for all the Monster Truck lovers, ‘Monster Jam’ had finally made it to the UAE. The streets of Abu Dhabi were filled with thousands of car and thrill lovers; some of them had seen this type of show before, others, including us, had never seen anything like a Monster Truck in real life and up close. Obviously, we had no idea what we were in for. We here, at one8one, don’t say this enough but we really, really, really love conventions. They’re fun! And we meet the greatest people ever! The Middle East Film and Comic Con 2013 (MEFCC) was no exception. You’ll remember our coverage of MEFCC’s first event last year and the ridiculous amounts of awesome that was enjoyed by all. Did we worry about how things would shape up this year? Maybe a little? Were we astounded at how much things have improved since the last time? Definitely!

“It was definitely a unique and one-of-a-kind experience for the Middle Eastern crowd.”

So there we were, at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, looking down at the sand ramps and white cars that looked like little skeletons, which, as we assumed, was done on purpose to add that extra drama effect to the show. Then the tournament started. Oh, it was loud! The Monster machines were roaring with occasional bursts of fire coming out of their hoses as the drivers accelerated and jumped up and down the sand dunes. The first part of the tournament was racing, involving participants grouped in twos; racing on the opposite sides of the track while going up and down the ramps. It was fun, however we were eager to see the trucks freestyle. Freestyling was what we came for; it involved the trucks racing up the ramps and literally spending a few good seconds in the air. Needless to say, some of the trucks were unfortunate and ended up flipped over or simply shut down. Ironically, the moments where the trucks were fippining over were when the crowd was in total awe. In the end, a driver under the name of Gravedigger won the competition and got his well-deserved prize. People seemed to have loved the show and so did we. It was definitely a unique and one-of-a-kind experience for the Middle Eastern crowd and it seems that there is enough fanbase to have ‘Monster Jam’ return next season. writing by photos by

Nasimi ft. Amirali I am a fan of dance music and was rather excited about this Season Closing Party at Nasimi featuring Amirali. When me and my friends arrived at the wonderful Nasimi beach, which is laid beautifully on the crescent of The Palm Jumeira, I couldn’t help but notice the extremely long qeue at the entrance to the party. The crowd seemed impatient to get in and get their groove on. After some time, we got in and were instantly surrounded by the dancing crowd stepping to the beat set by the quirky DJ, who’s lately been making some noise in the music industry. What did we think of music? It was great! It seemed as if we were taken on a ride with some good House from the past few years mixed with a bit of minimal and electronica. People kept dancing and so did we. What about the setup? Well, the location is what impressed us most. Whether you are dancing or just socialising with friends at the beach, you can’t help but wander at the beauty of the city of Dubai. The views were magnificent and if you are ever looking for a night of good music, great crowd and a marvelous view, then this is always the place to be. In the end, our feet were tired and our ears were buzzing from this awesome combination Nasimi offers the crowd. Well-done. writing by photos by

Are You Grateful? by

Have you ever wondered why we have bad days sometimes? Well I think I have a fantastic theory to put your brain to the test and convince you.

Let’s take a very poor African tribe. Now, I’m pretty sure we’ve all seen at least one episode of a documentary about a poor tribe in Africa before – if you haven’t that’s okay – because let me tell you these people are always happy. We all question ourselves and ask, “Why are they so happy when they live in such poverty?” The simple fact is, even though they do not have the best clothing and do not receive the best education they are grateful that they, at least, get some of those things. Gratitude always leaves them satisfied. They will not let scarcity of food or ragged clothes bring them down. They may not have the best of everything but they know that they are on this earth for a reason. Therefore they have got to make the most of it and just enjoy themselves in every way possible. It’s quite inspiring don’t you think? Have you ever had a miserable day where you were frustrated because of one little thing that went wrong? When someone tells you off and your face turns red with anger and hate consumes you? I’m pretty sure you have. Well! My advice to you is laugh about it. Yes, laugh about it and move on. If that doesn’t help then think of things that make you happy, like a game, a movie, a song, a funny moment- anything! You decide. Try this out and I assure you the rest of your day will turn out great! We need to enjoy life. Make yours a happy one!

Suit Up, Girl!

This special is to help you feel more comfortable in your own skin. We all have those different, random and exciting characteristics which distinguish us from our friends, but how we show them off is what counts. Who says you can’t depict your personality through your everyday style? It doesn’t mean you have to stick to one style because you can explore every emotion you experience through your clothing.

Vintage Figure “Old is gold”, as the saying goes and still seems fitting today. You live up to a classy role model that suits your character, but expressing it through your dress code can be a little tricky. Finding vintage clothing has become a lot easier nowadays which helps us help you. First: Sometimes wearing sepia colours doesn’t mean you are wearing vintage; it just means you can’t choose colour well. Vintage allows you to explore the different shapes and sizes of clothing you never pictured wearing while finding a way to make it work beyond imagination. Colour plays a huge role in showing classical traits but the print could contrast so it is important to choose wisely and balance the two. Final: Complete your garment with outrageously amazing accessories; not just jewellery but head wear too. This will put the perfect spin on your vintage pop. Your shoes can vary depending on your outfit but try and stay in range of the tieups, ankle boots and press pumps.

Lady Diva Sparkle! Flamboyance! Extreme! You go all out when it’s your turn to show off your personality through your clothing. You’re fun, exciting and always dressed to impress but sometimes there is a little “no-no” to what you do and could just give people the wrong idea of who you are. Always being positive grabs everyone’s attention. First: You want to stand out. Don’t shy away from colour; go wild in exploring the many colours that may suit you. Be careful though, pairing the wrong colours or too many colours would make an overstatement and cause damage to your stylish reputation. Final: Complete your look with a bit of sparkle and make sure not to show too much skin; sparkle and colour with too little coverage might just ruin the look you are aiming to achieve. The perfect accessories compliment both you and your outfit. Pair everything with some stunning stilettos and you’re good to go.

Miss Perfection Can’t stand certain elements being out of place? If you are the type of person that likes to make sure everything is flawless, no doubt your appearance will get the same attention to detail. Even though you find yourself a little finicky with regards to clothing you want to show off that meticulous personality. There are endless ways to display that part of you while still keeping your dress code exuberant. First: Make sure your look is flawless whether you are wearing jeans, a dress or a skirt. Put something on that resembles your personality. Try not to wear something that could impare your movement to avoid feeling spent at the end of the day. Final: Since you need the impeccable glow in your clothing to portray your individuality, stay away from the creased look and always polish your jewellery before putting it on. All this would show just how much of a perfectionist you are.

Converse Comfy Your personality yells comfort, cool and collective. You would not be caught in platform heels and a cocktail dress very often. You are awesome because your traits allow you to dress in some of the classiest brands and coolest trends. First: Your comfort allows you to style yourself in the latest ripped and washed-look jeans along with a beautiful free-flow blouse that accents your groove. Sometimes, a waist length jacket can highlight your curves and give you definition. Bracelets are splendid this year so go crazy since they add that casual charm. Of course, since you are a casual butterfly, you are good at letting your hair down or tying it up into a simple ponytail. Try adding a hair clip or a head band for a bit of flavour. Final: Your shoes compliment your personality as long as your Converse or high-tops always look fresh and new. Every now and then it would be great to fit into a pair of flat pumps that match your top or your accessories. by

Suit Up, Boy! by

Atiyya Laher

The Surfer Looking to show off a tan and the fact that you love being outdoors? Your outfit remains as cool and collective as your personality. First: Nothing yells better than your sand board shorts that rock those cargo pockets and free flow style. You might love your branded flip flops, but sometimes cool sneakers may look even better and still make you look classy and portray your awesome personality. Final: An exuberant shirt, perhaps with iconic colours, will get your individuality noticed and immediately leave the right impression on people around you. Finishing up your complete look with a straw hat and a leather bracelet with something intriguing engraved on it will show class.

The Geek So we all know that the chunky, hunky spectacles are the trend even though you don’t need them to see clearly, but the way you wear them can make a statement without using a single word. First: Choose the glasses that frame your face with an accent. Having a super large or super small frame can be a huge no-no for the rest of the outfit. Your specs don’t necessarily need any colour but it wouldn’t hurt since vibrance always spices up the mood. Final: Pair up your glasses with a smooth pastel coloured shirt left open to expose your cool T-shirt underneath. Smart jeans or smart, checked Bermuda shorts pair great with that specific combination and give you a unique look.

Sport Addict Yes that’s right, capital S, capital A. You’re the type of gentleman that absolutely adores physical activities, loves watching sports, tweets about sport, but most of all loves to wear it. Let’s try and take a couple of steps back. Never get rid of that style, it’s who you are. Wear it in a way that makes everyone else want it too. First: Show up in the best looking sportswear possible, but if it’s going to be nylon, throw over an awesome shirt that makes you look like you’ve just worked out instead of looking like you’re wearing swim gear. If you want to rock your favourite sport team’s logo, ruffle it with a jacket or the shirt that has a collar so you can illustrate some elegance in the sports field. Final: Do not. I repeat. DO NOT pair your sport shirt with shorts unless you plan on running in it. Your character obviously has class and you need to show it off with smart un-frayed, un-creased and de-colourised jeans. Any Adidas and Pumas will go flawlessly with your look leaving you looking fresh, sporty and classy.

Mr Prim and Proper You are the black sheep among your friends. You make sure that what you wear and what you do is perfection. Let’s not forget that you prefer your clothes immaculate. They need to be perfect, both comfort and appearance wise. Just let everyone know that although you are elegantly dressed you can still have a lot of fun. First: : Remember not to constrict your movement. Being free allows your character to relax and go with the flow. A smart shirt with a simple print is always attractive with the sleeves folded smoothly to your elbows and the top two buttons left open. If you are planning a simple day, throw on a t-shirt with a collar to balance your preferences of smart and casual. Final: Smooth operator pants have introduced their way into this generation with a slim fit. Slip them on and finish the outfit with a shiny lace-up shoe that accents your walk. Don’t forget there are seven days in a week; this gives you room to experiment several styles according to your mood. Sometimes, strapping over a thin leather jacket preserves your character while still giving away a hint of extra style and cool personality. Belts will always make your outfit look smarter so go ahead and experiment.

DJ Bliss “I constantly try and work hard on what I’m doing.”

Marwan Parham, popularly known as DJ Bliss, has taken the music scene in Dubai by storm. After winning numerous awards here in the Middle East, including Viva’s Bachelor Of The Year, being part of Ahlan’s Hot 100 and finally winning 2012’s Best Urban Night, DJ Bliss has become the UAE’s leading personality. In a world where dreams can be hard to attain, Parham teaches aspiring DJs and artists alike that all you need is passion and perseverance to get the ball rolling. We got the chance to catch up with the DJ himself to talk about early beginnings, aspirations and major highlights.

Obviously things didn’t just happen for you. How did you manage your way into the music industry (initially) and later into the entertainment and TV industry? It started off when I was in high school; I used to run my high school radio station- so that got me into the radio business. Music wise, my brother taught me how to play the guitar and we used to just jam. As far as DJing is concerned, I loved music and being part of the radio station at school, which, I guess, led me to pursue music. You’re on a radio show,TV show, managing BLISS inc, MCing and producing your own music. How have you managed to juggle all of these things as well as have a social life of your own? I don’t have much of a social life, to be honest with you, but I’m lucky that my social life revolves around all the jobs that I do. The reason why it all runs very smoothly is because I have such a great team. They are all so involved in what I do; they manage my schedule, support me when I need help and run a lot of things for me in the office which allows me to work on my passion, which is production and DJing. Why did you choose to become a DJ? How does the whole DJ experience make you feel? I don’t think I chose to become a DJ. I never really thought that DJing was what I wanted to do, nor did I think that’s what I would end up doing. It just happened, really. My interest in radio just turned into DJing at high school parties, doing events, then club gigs and finally concerts. Even today, when I think back, I never remember thinking ‘I want to become a DJ’. Do you feel like you look to any other DJs or artists when creating new music? Where do you take your inspiration from? I get inspiration from everything and everyone. Everyone I see who is doing something successful and bringing joy to their lives gives me a form of inspiration. Whether it’s a musician, cleaner, teacher etc. I just look at what they are doing and take bits and pieces from their tasks. I figure a way to interpret them into my own music. Of course, I look at the greats like Bob Marley and Tupac, and I learn from everything they did, to get to their point of success. Since your first single ‘Let It Go’ was released and you got your big break on TV as a host of ‘That’s Entertainment’, do you feel like anything has changed for you? Are people treating you differently? Are things getting easier for you? It does get a little bit easier, but it only gets easier for your next project. It’s just like getting a job. Once you’ve gotten experience from your first job, it’s easier to get your second job. I constantly try and work hard on what I’m doing. In order for me to progress from DJing, to radio, to MCing and finally to TV, it was always a constant struggle which requires a lot of perseverance and dedication. What was it like to be on the set of your own music video ‘Let It Go’? It was really cool, I really enjoyed it. I had Kardinal Offishall with me on set (since he was featured on the song) and because he’s such a great friend of mine, he made the whole experience so much more fun. I was also pretty ‘hands on’ with the whole process. The director let me get involved with the editing and creative development, and because it was such a great experience, I think I want to get involved with production and the creation of music videos in the future.

“..The more competitive it gets, the more effort people put into their work so that they can stand out more than the others.”

Is there alot of competition for you within UAE’s DJ and music scene? If so, how do you deal with it? Competition is very healthy, it’s very good. The more competition there is, the better the quality of the music and DJs. The more competitive it gets, the more effort people put into their work so that they can stand out more than the others. I personally love competition, I love seeing other DJs produce their own version of the same piece of music. Dubai is slowly progressing into a great place for DJs to be. What has been the highlight of the past 5 years for you? (within your career) One of my major highlights occurred quite recently; I was co-producing a song for Wyclef and the Fugees. This was so surreal to me, because back in high school I was listening and dancing to their musuc. Skip forward a couple of years and I’m producing a song for them. That’s crazy! If you weren’t a DJ and a TV host, what do you think you’d be doing right now? I think I’d probably become a pilot; just because I like travelling and touring the world. Learning about new cultures and ethics has always interested me. What’s the hardest thing about DJing at a professional level? As a DJ, it’s your duty to keep the crowd entertained, so you can’t let your mood affect the way you perform, interact with the crowd or what you say. You’re just one guy at a concert or club that thousands of people are watching and are depending on to have fun. You are controlling everything they do, so you cannot let anything get in the way of that. You were a winner of the Timeout nightlife awards back in 2011 for best local DJ, you’ve also won ‘Best Urban Night’ in 2012 and you’ve been in Ahlan’s hot 100 for four years running, do you have any other dreams you wish to accomplish within the near future? Although these awards and titles mean so much to me, and I appreciate them immensely, getting a major international award would be a dream come true. If I got an MTV award, I don’t even know what I would do.

What’s a typical music session like for you? Do you have any specific routines or rituals you do when coming up with the next single? There is definitely a right time for making music, so as much as I try to plan and organize studio sessions; if the energy and mood isn’t right, then the whole situation and work environment is affected by it. Whenever the ambiance in the studio is right, my creative side comes out. There’s alot of talk about your upcoming album “QB7 Made in Dubai” What can we expect from this album? Will the songs be similar to ‘Let It Go’? It actually won’t. ‘Let It Go’ will be on the album, but the album itself is completely different from anything that you would have expected from me. It has a lot of radio songs, there are ballads on there, African songs, R&B songs and hip-hop songs. So there’s practically everything on there. I believe a mix of all these things contributes to the production of a fantastic album. It’s also a combination of features from local and international artists. Do you have any countries or locations you’d love to DJ or MC at? One country I’d love to go to is Japan. I’ve heard that the culture scene there is just phenomenal. My brothers went and loved it. So, Japan is definitely a place I want to cross off my bucket list.

Gizmos & Gadgets

HTC One I cannot stress enough on the love I have for this phone. This is the best device HTC has produced to date. It is an all-hopes, all-eggs in one basket device; it’s their knight in shining armour against all the Galaxies,Lumias and iPhones. Let’s start with hardware. This is a phone than can finally stand against the iPhone 5, which set an extremely high standard in industrial design. One sports an incredibly crisp 4.7” display with a 468 PPI at 1080x1920 pixels. The screen is molded into an aluminium shell that has two Boom Sound front-facing speakers, which offer, by far, the best audio experience on a mobile device. Tablets included. When it comes to software, One runs on Android 4.1.2 with the latest HTC Sense 5 skin on top. The most highlighted feature is BlinkFeed, which is a stream of live panels that pull the content such as news, social media updates and other subjects that may interest you. BlinkFeed can be connected to your social media accounts, keeping you updated on the go.

This month we’ve got our hands on three extremely well-built devices from HTC, Samsung and Nokia. Read on what Stereohead had to say about his time with the big Android players the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4; and check out how easy Nokia Lumia 720 was to use for Natasha.

by stereohead

Next is the camera, HTC used their own technology with ,what they like to call, Ultra PIxels. The main trick behind this technology is much-bigger pixels that capture more light, resulting in better night shots and more detail. While my tests proved true with the night shots, the daylight images were similar to what can be achieved with other smartphones. Here is where Zoe comes in to play. Zoe is a feature that compiles your short videos as well as images from the phone’s library and creates an overall video. Audio can be added, which makes Zoe a great tool for creating videos full of wonderful memories. Finally, HTC supports all the much-expected network capabilites, including LTE, HSPA+ and NFC. The battery on this device is pretty good, however I found myself in red by 8 or 9 pm if I took it off the charge in the early morning. In the end, if you are looking for an Android beast that supports LTE and has an amazing screen, HTC One or Samsung Galaxy S4 are equally good; however when it comes to excellent industrial design, elegant OS and premium feel device, HTC One clearly wins here. HTC One is literally the one Android device to buy now.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Samsung Galaxy S4- the phone that is all over the place, talked by almost everyone and anticipated by all; this phone is Samsung’s latest baby. As expected, the latest Galaxy is filled to the max with all the fastest and greatest tech with a specs list that could put any other competitor to shame. Let’s start with hardware, the phone is a slight departure from the previous generation S3 and is visually very close in resemblance to it. Samsung managed to slim the S4 down to a mere 7.9 mm while increasing its display to 5”. Speaking of display, keeping true to itself, Samsung went with their SuperAMOLED technology at a notably higher resolution 1920x1080 resulting in 441 PPI. The thing about AMOLED is its colours are over saturated and it is barely visible in direct sunlight. After comparing the S4 to HTC One and iPhone 5, which both use IPS display technology, the S4 was dim and therefore harder to use in bright daylight. When it comes to the OS, Galaxy S4 runs on the latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with its latest TouchWiz skin on top. Let me say, the S4 is full of features; some of those features would probably never be used by many. I must say, however, that having the ability to track your activity levels and food intake with S Health or being able to pause a video the moment you look away is rather cool. The other thing I liked was previewing items on the screen without touching the actual phone. This can be very handy when your hands are dirty. The camera packs 13 MP with a stack of options for editing as well as a dual shot functionality, where both cameras could be used to capture the views from both sides at the same time. It’s quirky and can be a lot of fun. Overall, this device is a beast; the camera has 13 MP, there are more features than one can imagine and the screen is gigantic for this category of smartphones. The drawbacks, however, are the presence of SuperAMOLED screen with its over saturated, unrealistic colours and bad visibility outdoors. The plastic body of the phone makes Galaxy S4 feel cheaper than competition when held in hand. In the end, the S4 is a great device with a long list of interesting features, however I do wish Samsung starts to move away from the use of plastic when building their phones.

Nokia Lumia 720 Nokia’s Lumia 720 build, design and battery life are amazing especially for its mid-price range. Its unibody slim design looks fantastic; its back is covered in solid matte high quality plastic that is available in bright colours, curving around the edges meeting the vibrant screen. The Clear Black glossy 4.3 IPS screen works with gloves on and even long nails. It is totally clear in full sunlight and has an excellent contrast ratio of 1,157:1. The only down side of the screen is its resolution (400 x 800), which is not as sharp on the display of this size. The battery life is excellent, one of the best in the market right now. The phone has a built in 2000mAh battery with 2G talk time lasting up to 23 hours while the 3G talk time lasts around 13 hours, which is amazing. You could go for two days without needing to charge your phone. The rear camera on Lumia 720 is also one of the best in the mid price range, being a 6.7 MP with good colours and little noise. It allows you to capture sharp and colourful pictures with low light resulting in perfect shots. Its secondary front camera has a resolution of 1280 x 960 px with video recording options on both. Apps such as Smart Shoot combines multiple shots to provide the best picture. Erase feature allows you to erase unwanted distractions in the image and Glam Me lets you glam yourself up by whitening your teeth or tanning your skin. So, overall, the Nokia Lumia is an excellent choice with a light, slim, stylish and bright body; a clear black screen, a brilliant battery life and amazing cameras. by natasha Aguiar

Bookshelf The Infernal Devices Series by Cassandra Clare In The Infernal Devices series we are brought back in time to the magical underworld of Victorian England. This series is the prequel to Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series. Imagine if you discover that the world you live in turns out to be different from what you’ve known all your life; that magic exists, that not everything or everyone is what they seem, that betrayal is inevitable and that love is dangerous. It all started with a letter from her brother and a ferry ticket. In order to find her brother, young Tessa Grey travels all the way to England from America. As soon as she sets foot in England, she is kidnapped by powerful Downworlders known as The Dark Sisters. She learns that not only does she have the power to transform into another person, but also a person named The Magister wants her powers for his own. Tessa is later rescued by a Shadowhunter and takes refuge with his kind. She soon befriends them and is torn between two best friends: James and Will. Although their characters are almost exact opposites, there seems to be something within them that pulls her in. But as their search deepens, they discover that nothing is as it seems, tough decisions will be made, loyalties will be tested and danger lurks at every corner. A war is brewing and Tessa is the key. by

Is It Just Me? by Miranda Hart If you feel like having a laugh, then this is exactly what you need. Miranda is a single woman who’s on the verge of turning 40 and ‘Is It Just Me?’ is her way of looking back at her life with a good dose of humor added to it. She’s naturally clumsy, shy and just plain weird at times. Words like ‘excercise’ and ‘diet’ get very little attention in her life, while ‘weird’ is a word that could easily fit into any paragraph that describes her. ‘Is It Just Me?’ feels like a funny autobiography of a brilliant comedian who takes things seriously at precisely the wrong time. It is a stripped down, more personal version of her TV sitcom ‘Miranda’ , where Ms. Hart plays a much more clumsy woman in her mid-thirties who runs a joke shop. A perfect read for those who need to relax and have a laugh. by Stereohead

After Earth

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo and Morgan Freeman

Starring: Tony Jaa, Primorata Dejudom and Dan Chupong

Man of Steel tells the story of how Superman was created. It introduces us to Clark Kent, a child transported to earth, as his planet was dying. He is found, adopted and brought up with human values. He had always felt like the odd one out with his super powers and constantly tried to find a way to fit in. He is made to find his place in life as the planet is attacked and he chooses to become a hero to protect the planet he now calls home.

Set in the future after earth is abandoned due to several cataclysmic events, humans have re-established society outside the solar system on a planet called Nova Prime, leaving the creatures on earth to evolve to survive. Cypher, the general of Ranger Corps, a peacekeeping organisation, is forced to see that his son Kltai is acting out to gain his love and attention. Their ship is destroyed in a crash leaving them stranded on earth, injured and surrounded by a dangerous species of animals that have now taken over the planet.

The film tells the story of a gang of professional magicians called the Four Horsemen who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audience with the money. An FBI agent and an Interpol detective are determined to punish the magicians for their crimes and stop them before they carry out what promises to be a much more ambitious heist.

It picks up right where Ong Bak 2 left off. Tien is captured and is beaten to the point of death on the orders of Lord Rajasena. With broken elbows and knees he is left to wait and be beheaded, when a kings messenger appears with a pardon. He is then taken to the Kana Khone village and left to heal. He remains crippled from his beatings. He learns to meditate and deal with his disablities. He knows he has to get his act together as his rival destroys the village and challenges him to a final duel.

Dream Trip

It’s summer and we are hot! To battle the scorching heat, we put together a trip to the wonderful Dreamland Aqua Park. Two teams battled the heat (and each other) with water balloons and waterguns. Team Charlie’s Angels 2.0 put on a good fight and won over team Jhaaz who were not keen on getting wet. We had some major fun on the rides and devoured our burgers at Snack Attack. What a day!

Atiyya Laher The sizzling heat felt like nothing but a whisper of the outdoors with the intense company of the competing teams at the water park. We were loaded with water guns and water balloons. Water was everywhere! It was an outburst of exuberance which carted through the entire day. The energy was cheerful which created the most electrifying atmosphere – mind you, we were surrounded by water so the adrenaline was unimaginable! Any day, any time – I’m definitely game to go back and relive the day. We won too!

Lara Galoustanian A day at dreamland is literally self explanatory; it felt like I was in a wonderful dream. Spending the day with great people in an atmosphere surrounded by water slides, water guns, great weather, hot sun and plenty of room to run about . Team Charlie’s Angels 2.0 rocked!

Serena Umer It felt great to revisit the amazing rides and attractions. My personal favorite was the Dream Stream; you could float through the park without ever leaving the water. I love the tranquil feeling of being carried gently along on a baloon by the current.

Natasha Aguiar Francis D’Souza The Dreamland Aqua Park trip will no doubt rank as one of the most epic outings I have ever had with friends. The rides, the food, the entertainment, the games even the staff made sure it was. I look forward to my next trip to Umm Al Quwain with my friends and family. Watching Mission Impossible came in handy when I was in need to do that belly flop and get to the other side where Charlie’s Angels 2.0 were relaxing at their base.

With the summer starting, the trip to Dreamland Aqua Park was perfect. The coolness of water, the exciting rides and the relaxation is just what we all needed for the weekend.

Health Risks in Fashion

Gigantic jewellery Stiletto mania Stilletos give you that perfect elegance, elongate your legs and magically transform your posture. However, what these gorgeous babies don’t warn us of is how deadly they can be to our knees, ankles and feet. Strolling in heels might get you noticed but don’t let it be too late when you feel your knees ache due to the immense stress. In addition, your feet become prone to bunions, making it hard to wear just about any footwear. Every now and then try on a pair of good sneakers or a beautiful flat pump and remember to do feet exercises at your desk.

Painful piercings It is always fun to try something new and having a new accessory on your body doesn’t seem like such a bad idea; however, try to limit the amount of piercings you actually have. They can cause infection if not treated with specific care. It may leave some horrible scars should you decide to take those piercings out. Think carefully before you want to pierce something, it’s quite permanent.

Flashy and beautiful, don’t be deceived, these charmers have a way of leaving their trademark. Wearing oversized earrings can cause your ear lobe to weigh down and hang; re-shaping your ears and leaving holes even bigger than when they were pierced. Wearing them for a shorter amount of time should do the trick. Try not to overpower your ears. Also, when wearing costume jewellery (non-gold or silver), try not to wet it or wear for longer than six hours. They begin to lose their coating and leave a blue mark on your skin which affects the skin cells.

Figure fitting elements The hour-glass figure is important to attain. Many manage to squeeze into the tightest of corsets and belts, however they forget to think about the effect it would leave on their abdomen. Squeezing the softest area of your torso can be so harmful as it can cause breathing problems and skin abrasions. Though these beautiful pieces of wonder can make one look fantastic, they are not the healthiest of garments to wear. Next time you purchase that new corset, try not to hold your breath.

Super-flat flats It is often assumed that flats are beneficial to the wellbeing of our feet; though this statement is correct, some people forget that too flat is dire. Our feet all have an arch which requires a base for steady balance and support. They need cushioned shoes that prevent pressure being placed on any part of the foot and knees. Constantly wearing flats, such as ballerina flats or flip flops, can result in the inflammation of the tendons in toes and heels.

Bulky bags One of the latest trends that have occurred over the past few years is the use of handbags that are larger than an entire top half of a body. Of course, space is essential, but what we don’t count in is the weight of these bags could be the reason of suffering from constant shoulder pain and back stiffness. Even carrying these bags on the middle section of the arm can result in numbness, leaving one feeling miserable in a variety of ways. Opt for the lighter option of these enormous bags or consider a smaller size; bigger isn’t always better.

Skinny jeans It is well-known how stunning skinny jeans can make one look; however, constricting the movements of the body when wearing those pants can become quite catastrophic if one should refuse to at least stretch them before putting them on. Skinny jeans prevent the calves from constant blood flow and put the muscles under stress therefore causing slight tingling and even numbness. Take precaution every now and then and make sure your legs are relaxed.

Q.

I’ve never been diagnosed with depression, but depressions runs in the family. I know the way I’m feeling isn’t normal. People tell me to stay strong. But ‘staying strong’ is a topic I can’t grasp. My life is like a long, dark tunnel, with a train following close-up behind me. And the only way to keep away from that train is to run. Well, I’m getting tired of running. I have way too much to deal with all the time. I have anxiety and panic disorders. A lot of the time it seems like it would be easier to just give up. I’m tired of fighting, and ‘staying strong’. I’m holding on to the fact that this tunnel may end and that hopefully things will get better someday; but I’ve become tired of hoping and at this point I just want it all to end.

Maria V. Chatila is the creator & host of Teens Talk Dubai, a YouTube show created for teens to have a voice. She also coaches teens, teens and parents and families in her role as Family & Relationship Coach. Maria strives to empower teens with the tools, skills and beliefs that they are resourceful, powerful and wise!

Enough! Dear Hopeful, Thank you for your letter. You will never know how many youth you are saving today just because you had the courage to write to me. Firstly, I would like to ask you to take a breath and rest assured that you are not alone. Although I get the sense that you feel alone, you are never alone. Next, I want to normalize some of the symptoms that you are experiencing. Although there are cases of genetic depression, it is not enough to assume that you are depressed because it runs in your family. I will outline some of the common symptoms of depression but remember that you must seek out a health practitioner to better diagnose your symptoms. The greatest concern that we are having with youth today is the state of their mental health. What you described in your letter is a clear indication that you are distressed and you mentioned that it is starting to affect you physically (panic and anxiety attacks). Mental health has a huge impact on how you live and it also affects the quality of your life. Some of the common symptoms of depression are.... • Irregular sleep: although it is normal for youth to have irregular sleeping patterns, it is not normal to sleep all day and still be so tired that you return to sleep again. Another irregularity is insomnia. • Lack of energy: despite getting extra sleep, if you find that you are still tired all of the time. • Loss of interest: not interested in anything at all and all the things that you were interested in suddenly seem useless and uninteresting. • Change of appetite: an extreme change from eating too much and eating to fill in emotional gaps or refusing to eat at all and losing one’s appetite completely. • Irritability: an extreme change in moods and swinging from one extreme to its’ polar opposite. • Bleak Outlook: does everything suddenly seem pointless? Are you talking about suicide or have you turned to self-harm? As you will notice, some of the symptoms mentioned above may not indicate depression in most cases, having most of these symptoms may indicate a problem and it is always best to be safe than sorry. I encourage you to look at your symptoms carefully and consider your mental health seriously. Pay close attention to what you are noticing about yourself and don’t self-diagnose. Seek out the support from your Family Practitioner. He/she will best be able to refer you onto the support that you will require. My goal for you is to strive for a better mental health and don’t let anyone label your issues regardless of what is in your family pool.

Finals problem Dear Stressed, What great timing with this letter! This is the time of the year that students are taking highly stressful exams and what you described in your letter is what they too are experiencing. For starters, tap yourself on the shoulder for noticing your habits and looking for help to create a positive change. This step alone is powerful and acknowledging the problem is the most important stage for change to be long-lasting. Carrying on, I notice that you remember not having poor study habits. In your letter, you claim to have inherited it through age. I suspect that this isn’t the case. What’s different now? What kept you motivated when you were younger? What changed since then? Remember, the majority of students all suffer with exam anxiety at some point in their school careers. You are not alone with this struggle. There are always some common tools and skills that you can use to overcome the anxiety but as you mentioned they may have become habits. Some common tools and skills are; • Develop good study habits early on in the semester/term. Don’t wait until exam week to start studying. This alone will cause panic and stress due to the fear that there isn’t enough time to complete the required studying. • Manage your time more effectively. Are you noticing what time of the day that you are dosing and procrastinating? Perhaps there are too many distractions around you to focus. Are you hungry? Thirsty? Do you need a break? Manage when you will study and offer yourself clear break-times during the study session. If you don’t, you may start to notice that you will become easily distracted and tired which will lead to procrastination and dozing off. • How are you organizing the workload to study? Are you overloading your study units into small amounts of time? Break down the topics/chapters/lessons that you are studying. • Do you have any outside distractions? Are you thinking about problems at home or with friends? It is always important to have a clear mind when you sit down to study. • Spend some time planning how you will be on the exam day. Some students are more distracted by the fear of ‘what if’ and they spend many study hours worrying about it. Are you? Finally, it is always most effective to find a reason to do well in an exam. What is the purpose of excelling? How will a good grade serve you? What benefits will you be celebrating when you know that you were successful? Use the answers to these questions when you are sitting down to study. Motivation is always the best medicine but it is most effective when the individual realizes that they are winning when they achieve their goal. Change your perspective on ‘exam time’ and you will notice that you will become more effective and have less anxiety during exam time.

Q. Exams are here, and rather than

getting myself prepared for what lies ahead, I’m doing the opposite. I constantly catch myself dosing off, getting distracted and procrastinating whilst revising. I used to be great at preparing for exams but with age came this new issue. I’ve tried making schedules but I just don’t seem to be able to stick to them. How can I break these terrible habits and get back on track to attaining the best possible grades? Please help.

8: Your head of department wants you to give the key speech at the upcoming event. You decide… a. This might be fun, time to show them what I’m made of. b. Let’s keep it short and sweet. c. Stage fright is hitting me already…

Mostly A’s:

Adventure Chaser! Doing something new and exciting every day is what gets your heart beating. You find pleasure in trying different things while exploring the wild side of life that encourages a strong self-esteem within you. You have a strong personality and always promote entertainment. Thankfully, your exuberant enthusiasm helps everyone else in the room re-discover their courage.

Mostly B’s:

Equilibrium Brat! The realist of the adventure world, you keep your adrenaline pump at base level where you refuse to expand. You limit yourself to what you can handle and put your foot down to too much merriment. Sometimes you realise that you are missing out on special moments. You prefer the quiet side of the drama where you keep the attention to yourself.

Mostly C’s:

Timid Twinkle. Simple, timid and reserved; your fundamentals on fun rely on keeping safe and out of anything close to danger. You prefer to stay close to people you are comfortable with and in places you are familiar with. Trying new foods and activities don’t tempt you at all and you remain unstable in crowds of new people. None the less, you invent quiet fun through with your own rules, which quiet people enjoy.
