Editor’s Letter

Congratulations to everyone who has participated in creating this extraordinary magazine and to those who have only just decided to join us. We did it, and we’ll keep doing it! A huge thanks to the many schools in Abu Dhabi and Dubai that are supporting us. We promise to keep you proud. Finally the day has come when the exams are over and there’s no more studying ~for a while, at least. It’s all about fun, fun and more fun during the summer. What are you going to do with your time now? Put it to good use and make a difference in someone’s life. How? That’s up to you to decide. You can begin by putting your thoughts into writing and making a difference to those who read it. Maha decided to contribute a small story on our 181youth facebook page which went like this: “I’m a senior in highschool. Our school has a preschool wing, and when I was heading to class today, a little girl with autism stopped me in the hallway. She smiled at me, took my hand, and said, “You’re really pretty.” Her teacher cried; the girl hadn’t spoken in over a year.” What a difference she made to the little girl’s life just by being in the right place at the right time. Imagine what could happen if you intentionally wanted to make a difference and acted towards it. It is very simple, Newton’s Law: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So what action are you going to take this summer? Get out there and create some fireworks, let everyone see how amazing your ideas are.

HI !! My eye got caught up in your photo-shoot ad in your magazine One8One. I’m that kind of person who likes to try something new every day, and honestly, being a model or let’s say in a small photos-shoot never came to my creativity. Glancing at that add for some reason, made me want to try it. I think that it would be a real fun experience to get caught on camera. Mahsa K

If invited for “iftar” (Ramadan meal) wait for the “adan” (call of prayer) before eating and always start with a glass of water and some dates. If your friend needs to pray, wait respectfully till they get back. Offer to help your friend send food to the mosques. All mosques in Abu Dhabi and Dubai give away food every day during the month of Ramadan, that way you help feed the less fortunate that are fasting.

S’ cool stuff First to Graduate Raha International School just celebrated its first graduating class. Ceremonies were held on May 28, 2011 at the Radisson Blu on Yas Island, and IB diploma students will no doubt be going on to attend top colleges worldwide. This is a milestone event for Raha and we are very proud of each and everyone of the graduates; they have worked hard to complete their diploma program.

Fresh talent A musical workshop was held at Yas Island’s Stars N’ Bars in Abu Dhabi last month, giving a group of budding young artists and DJs a unique insight into the music industry. Led by Radio 1 DJ Dany Neville, the two-day “Music for Youth” programme covered topics such as radio producing, DJing and insights into regional hiphop culture.

Taste of working life And the winner is… Dubai College’s annual Battle of the Bands in April was widely regarded to be the best gig in its history, showcasing a number of impressive young bands, as well as hugely talented sixth-form acts. The concert ended with a showdown between Jose and the Sunshine Lads and Commissar Judy, with Jose and the Sunshine Lads swiping the crown in a closely fought contest.

More than 140 students from Jumeirah College’s year-10 got a taste of working life last month, after having spent time on work-experience across six countries, taking up positions in some of the biggest names in business. Students worked for companies ranging from the famous Goldman Sachs bank to Al Boom Diving, and were largely lauded for their efforts.

Grand graduation The Dubai World Trade Centre recently played host to around 5,000 people for the American University in Dubai’s annual commencement ceremony, which celebrated the class of 2011, and was broadcast live on local radio and television. Amongst the guests was H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vicepresident and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Student radio a go Last month saw the UAE’s only student-orientated online radio station, Campus Radio Middle East, take a huge leap forward after it came first in the Falcon’s Lair entrepreneurial competition organised by Dubai Eye, Dubizzle and Virtuzone. The final showdown saw station co-founder Ritesh Jeswani impress the judges in the face of harsh questioning from some of Dubai’s leading businessmen live on Dubai Eye.

Not so sweet in Dubai canteens

Students with a sweet tooth last month received bitter news after it was announced that crisps, chocolates, chewing gum and fizzy drinks would be banned from being sold in schools under new government regulations. Meals from school canteens will be inspected by officials, who will endeavour to make students aware of the ingredients in junk food.

Dubai College takes swimming crown Dubai College’s swimming team once again took first place at last month’ s annual Dubai Schools’ Swimming League, giving the school a perfect winning record since 2009. The competition saw JESS Ranches come in second, while Jumeirah College rounded off the top three.

My power of will “it's you who makes the change, you and only you”

Being young is just like being a floating paper bag: pulled from left to right, right to left under the effect of what’s around you, but yet free of any obligations or restrictions; the feeling of being leaned back in the world, a free runner. My own paper bag has been thrown with tiny pebbles, leaving a permanent mark, chaining me down to all these pills, physical disorders and mental frustration. When all of this first started happening I went to every doctor, every expert who could explain what was going on. Each of them had a different answer, a different treatment for it, but they were all similar with one last thing they used to say at the end of every session. “Have some power of will. Look after yourself, psychologically. If you believe you’re okay then you’ll feel okay.” At first I didn’t really listen to what they had to say about that. I thought to myself, ‘How can someone be healed just by being convinced that you already are?’ It sounded like nonsense to me, so day after day I grew more negative, more dramatic, growing a “why me” attitude. I couldn’t help but notice that my health got worse, worse and worse till I hit rock bottom. I

stayed in bed all the time, not wanting to eat, losing the will to do anything and everything, and then started to gain pity from the people around me. I hated that. I also hated the desperate look my parents gave whenever they saw me like that so day after day, I pushed myself into moving around the house, doing anything productive; eating, smiling, being cheerful for them to worry less, and then after a while, I began to do each of these things for me. I felt better and so, from that point, I kept on doing that: I was positive, happy and had everything happening around me from a new view. You see, you can look at life from different aspects, each based on how you feel inside. You can be sad and the world will look so gloomy and blue; or you can be happy and see only rainbows and rays of sunshine. You can even create your own world with the imagination you have and see everything as a form of art, as an inspiring form to be creative and fresh. My point is, it’s you who makes the change~you and only you. Be realistic. Experience every emotion that life may throw at you, but don’t let it take you down a side road. You carve your own road. I won’t say my lupus is gone now, but I did find a new way of adapting to it, a new way of realising that the glass is still half full. by abby

Gaming F.3.A.R. With legendary film director John Carpenter and cinema writer Steve Niles on-board , Warner Bros. are once again aiming for the pee-in-your-pants kind of terror that has made every self-respecting gamer scream like a teenage girl. Players will once again fill the boots of Point Man from the original, alongside sibling Paxton Fettel, in a fierce quarrel with darling mother Alma. Who knew fear could be a family affair?

Alice: Madness Returns Go down the rabbit hole once again, with Alice bringing some madness to the wonderful land of ...err, Wonderland. A decade after experiencing her parents’ death, Alice is once again haunted by the memories and comes to Wonderland to see if she could chill out here. But there is a game to get on with, and predictably the stuff hits the fan and the world around Alice starts to turn evil. Like any good lead character, she has to save the residents of the Wonderland and know the true cause of her parents’ death.

Red Faction: Armageddon In Armageddon, you play as Darius Mason, grand kid of Alec Mason from the previous game. Darius runs a cash-rich business in the caves of Mars (where else, it’s Red Faction!). Even in 2170, and even on Mars, Darius is tricked by a priest into opening a shaft of an old Marauder temple, which, as you would expect any sci-fi flick to do, awakens a longdormant race of hideous creatures. Darius must clear his name from any wrongdoings and so he joins the all-star Red Faction team to being justice. Booyah!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Deus Ex: of Time 3D Human Revolution In Human Revolution, you take up boots of Adam Jensen, a security thug officer at Sarif Industries, a leading company that specialises in human-robotic augmentations. Life is pretty fluffy in the 2027 hyper-future before Jensen encounters a devastating attack on his company, leaving him horribly injured, and with little choice but to undergo augmentation to survive. That is when, apparently, the “conspiracy begins”. Human Revolution is the third installment in the popular cyber-punk series.

We are not sure about the rest of the title, but the word ‘Legend’ holds true for this Nintendo classic. Originally released in 1998, the game quickly rose to a cult status, with many critics and gamers hailing it as one of the best games the industry has ever churned out. The game is set to re-release, in glorious 3D, for Nintnedo’s handheld console, the 3DS. It will have a few tweaks here and there, but in the end it won’t matter. This is going to sell like hot cakes regardless.

EMPIRES Dia Hassan, Juliana Down’s lead vocalist was interviewed by one8one.

First of all, is there a history behind your band’s name? How did you come up with it? The band name is inspired by a true personal story that lived and died on the streets of Lebanon during the civil war. How many members do you have in your band, and what is each person’s role? There are 5 members in the band; Dia – Vocals and rhythm guitars Sari – Lead Guitars James Sinclair – Drums Andrew Gibson – Bass Lionel Fernandes – Keyboards and buttons How did you guys come together to form Juliana Down? I met James one night at a house party in Dubai. We are both passionate about music and were talking for so long about live shows and great music that we didn’t notice that we were being antisocial and the party was actually over. We decided to take the energy from that party into the rehearsal room and a couple of days later Sari, James and I found ourselves kicking out this epic sound. We started writing some great tunes and the chemistry was immediately awesome. Soon after that we introduced Lionel to the mix as we wanted to produce a full sound with some really interesting synths etc. and Lionel is passionate about his keys and buttons. Then we called Andrew and said “hey man, I know you from other bands on the scene, really love your skills, wanna play with Guns ‘N’ Roses in six days?” I guess it was too good an offer to refuse and we have been a tight

unit ever since. We have also had a lot of help and support from our manager and good friend Kelly Haechler, who has really pushed us on. What kind of music do you play? Do you all share the same musical tendencies or does each one of you have a different taste in music? We describe the music as ‘epic melodic rock’. We try to create drama, tension and resolution in all the songs we write. We try and make sure that the listener is left feeling something~love, hate, anger, peace, whatever~just SOMETHING. The worst thing you can do as a songwriter is leave people cold and indifferent. In terms of influences, each member brings something different to the table. We all share a love of well-crafted rock songs but we all have open musical minds~if you combined our ipods you would find everything from Metallica and Public Enemy to jazz classics and everything in between. Who’s your designated lyricist? I write most of the lyrics as the songs have to be personal for me to sing them. However, on ‘Empires’ (the album) there are some contributions from previous band members such as my good friend Sol. The inspiration for the songs really kicks off in the rehearsal room when I hear the boys opening up some big new riff. I always try to write about something I’ve been through. Being honest is key for me. Do you write your music collectively? Is it easier to have five musicians contributing equally to a song or is it easier to have one mastermind and

four musicians instead? . A song can start in so many ways. We get into rehearsal sessions with lots of ideas, such as guitar licks, vocal melodies, random words and ideas, and when we’re there, it all comes together. It’s really hard to describe it, but when we are in the process of writing we seem to enter a different world and the songs come together naturally. If you have to force it, it usually means it isn’t worth it. Sometimes there are ideas that form between a couple of us and the rest of the band runs with them. When I look around the rehearsal room and see everyone playing with a huge smile on their face, I know that we’ve stumbled upon a keeper. Do you ever fight over the microphone? No. We’ve got great deal of respect for each other and that is something we all value hugely. We all have a lot of experience in the music industry and we all love each other’s company. It’s more than just being in a band. Who are your influences? Who inspires you? How long have you got? We take inspiration from all over the place: books, films, art, politics, watching couples fight in the street! In terms of pure musical influences, the list is so long you would need to give us the whole magazine, but if you forced us to pick some examples of bands that we have been compared to, I guess you might say Muse, Placebo, U2, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead. Are you guys full time musicians? Have you had any formal training? We’re as full time as we can be while also paying the bills. It certainly occupies us most of the time. We have all had quite a bit of musical training of one sort or another but there is no training quite like experience and we have amassed a lot of that over the past few years.

How would you describe your journey as indie musicians in the UAE? My personal journey in the UAE music scene has been long. I grew up in the UAE and I started playing shows in 2000, when I was just a kid. Back then the scene was kind of limited but it was great contributing the growth of it. Seeing where the UAE music scene is today makes me really proud, there are some really good local bands out there doing an awesome job and getting the chance to open up for huge international acts. That is not something you see in much of the rest of the world. What’s your biggest achievement? Did you think you’d make it this far? It’s hard to tell, we’ve been very fortunate, playing with giants of the international music scene, such as Muse, Guns N’ Roses, Justin Timberlake, Velvet Revolver, and Maroon 5. Those gigs have been a highlight for sure. However, signing our deal with Sony Music is arguably the highlight. Juliana Down is the first rock band from the Middle East to sign to a major label and that is definitely a big achievement. Tell us a bit about how it felt to be the supporting act of Guns’ n Roses? I was kind of in denial about it all until I got the “Two minutes to stage” call, and then the enormity of playing to almost 30,000 people hit me. The guys from GNR were awesome and having

Bumblefoot, DJ Ashba and the rest watch us from the side of the stage as we performed really gave us a boost. We loved every minute of it. So what’s Juliana Down up to now? We have just released our brand new album, “Empires”, through Sony Music. It is available in music outlets around the Middle East and North Africa. We are really proud of the album and delighted that we finally had the chance to work with our great producer Miltiadis Kyvertinis, who has done an awesome job of engineering and producing the record. He has been a personal friend of mine for many years and we felt the time was right to work together. He really helped bring the songs to life. Can you tell us about the songs in your new album? The songs are a reflection of the band’s journey so far, the best way to know more about the songs is buy the record, shut your bedroom door and play it really loud! Where can we get our hands on your album? The album is sold at all Virgin outlets in the UAE as well as online on various platforms. Visit our website www. julianadown.com for details. Best of luck with everything and p.s. your “Empires” track is awesome. Thanks! by Ghadeer Abeidoh

Beyonce ‘4’

Album Reviews By

Dina Hassan

This artist has for the past 10 years dominated global charts with both her Destiny’s Child albums and her solo work as well. She now continues her legacy of R&B music through ‘4’. Beyonce has forever strived to empower women through her songs and emphasise the importance of love, and she does so again though her latest album. Songs such as “Run The World (Girls)” and “1+1” are both musically and emotionally suspenseful and uplifting, and are great to dance to. Set to be released on November 18, 2011 the album is bound to be amazing if it continues with what has been seen of it so far.

Foo Fighters Wasting Light And they’re back! Eagerly anticipated, the Foo Fighters have not disappointed their fans. The new album ‘Wasting Light’ is their seventh album, released April 12, 2011. Helped by the songs “Rope” and “Arlandria” the album charted at number 8 on the Billboards for rock albums. With front-man Dave Grohl (a former member of Nirvana) as lead vocalist, the album takes a more laid back approach to rock than their previous top-charting albums. Whether this is good or bad depends on what the fans think. Having produced a more personal album, the Foo Fighters still don’t disappoint.

Lady Gaga Born This Way Gaga is officially “gaga”, but that’s what everyone loves about her. This album is a unique collection of her music, showing how her style has evolved and intertwined with other genres as well. Though many believe Gaga is a bad influence, the lyrics of her song “Born This Way” attempt to persuade that acceptance no matter what is a good moral to teach. And though there is skepticism about Gaga’s messages and songs, it does not change the fact that her music is still a movement to be reckoned with in itself. Concerts

Shakira Shakira brought passion and love to the stage and this was clear because of the reaction emitted from the crowd from the beginning of her performance to its end. It didn’t matter whether you understood the language she was singing in or not, the performance was epic and much different than what you see of her from your TV screen. By watching her perform you could tell how she loved what she was doing and she put her soul into making music. Towards the end of the concert the audience was feeling a little disappointed since she had not played ‘Waka Waka’ but were then sweetly surprised by ending with the infamous football song. An incredible experience. by

Snoop dogg

One of the best known West Coast rappers, Snoop Dogg has finally made an appearance in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Since the day the announcement was made, devoted fans of Snoop were awaiting his arrival. And the Dogg fans got exactly what they were looking for: a Hip Hop Sensation. For twenty years, Snoop Dogg has been “Dropping It Like It’s Hot”, and Snoop’s first time in Abu Dhabi was no different. He shocked the crowd by coming out on stage wearing traditional a gutra and kandora. Rapping some of his oldest hits “Lodi Dodi,” “What’s My Name,” and “Beautiful” to his latest hit, “Wet”, the crowd was in non-stop movement. He also gave respect to some of his fallen hip-hop homeboys, Tupac, Biggie Smalls and Nate Dogg. He showed love by rapping a few of their hit songs and observing a moment of silence in their honor. From the sweaty crowds, the fresh rhymes, and the flirtatious dancers, the Snoop Dogg show was definitely a concert that shouldn’t have been missed. Best concert in Abu Dhabi history?? Maroon 5 Warming up for Maroon 5 was local band Juliana Down. With amazing vocals, they played a great set. Then the audience had to wait a while before the stage was ready for Maroon 5. Surprisingly, we thought we would have to wait another hour until they arrived, just like all the other bands at the concerts we’ve been to, but no, we got our sodas and took some close up photos of both bands. I’ve never been so close to the stage. It was incredible. Live shows can be scary because you never know if the artists are as good as their tracks~you can find a lot of vocalists singing in and out of tune~but Adam Levine surprised everyone with an amazing show, disregarding the fact that he had a backup vocalist. He performed just as any artist with his talent should~wonderfully~and even improvised on some of his songs. The show was such a success, many in the crowd were singing along, dancing and some were even crying. The atmosphere was incredible. It was a very memorable night. photos and writing by

15 Lies Your Parents Tell You by

Dina Hassan

Expectations are placed upon us from the day we are born. Parents expect us to smile earlier than other kids, to learn the alphabet faster than other kids, to get better grades than other kids, and along the way, we are made to believe that we are the best. So why aren’t we? But what parents don’t tell you when you are looking under the pillow for the tooth fairy or waiting for Santa Claus to come down the chimney is that they don’t exist. The little white lies are told to us from the early stages of life and develop along with our growth towards, during and after adolescence. However the little white lies do not involve fictional characters as we get older, but involve everyday situations that we come to face with our parents. Hopefully one day parents will understand that we don’t believe in Santa Claus any more, and can see right through their attempts at deception.

1

If you don’t study, we’ll take your laptop/phone away…

In this day and age, if you don’t have your laptop you cant study! If you don’t have your phone, then how will they call you? Everything is done electronically and they know that.

2

Sure, you can get whatever you want!

So long as it’s cheap, and it’s not too alluring and it’s not PG 18.

3

This tastes good! Try it!

It worked when you were five and they wanted you to eat your green peas. But by now you should know better, and in case you don’t, be wary.

4

Yes you can go out tomorrow night/this weekend/next month…

Parents always say that to get you to stop nagging at them. In their mind they’re telling themselves, “If I get them to stop talking now, maybe my headache will go away. I’ll deal with the whining tomorrow.” So make sure that they have agreed to let you go out and are not just saying things to get you to stop asking.

5

This looks great on you!!

Your style may not be your parent’s style. Be true to who you are, heed their advice (because remember they are your parents), but be yourself as well.

6

No- I’m not adding you on Facebook to see what you’re up to.

Why else would they be? They see you at home, either that or they’re just a phone call away. And even then, there are still emails. There are so many methods of contacting people, they don’t need to be your Facebook friend. Keep the parents as parents: they should trust you enough, not to have to check your activities on Facebook. Just have a conversation with them.

7

If you tell me, I promise I won’t get mad…

They’re going to get mad. They just are. No matter how terrible what you’ve done is, or how insignificant it is, it just doesn’t matter. They are already beyond the point of no return, so brace yourself.

8

When I was your age…

They did not walk seven miles to school, they did not eat all they’re vegetables, they came home at least twice after curfew, they did not cook every meal, they did not study 24 hours a day. Don’t worry: they are human. They’re just trying to make you into the best person you can be while exaggerating about themselves a lot.

23

9

It doesn’t matter, because I love you

Really? So if we start throwing paint on the walls and walking around with underwear on our heads, it won’t matter? Because you love us? Just because you may be feeling under the weather or disheartened by something, knowing that your parents love you helps a little, but you already knew that they loved you, so it probably does still matter. Try to find another way to cheer yourself up; your parents will be glad to be involved, reminding you that they’re there for you.

13

Money Doesn’t buy happiness

Who are they kidding? They’ve probably said this to you after they’ve bought you (or themselves) something pricey. It may not buy happiness directly, but it sure does help.

14

Just do your best, that’s all that matters

It obviously does matter! Otherwise they wouldn’t be saying that how much effort you’ve put in is what counts! They don’t realise that this white lie of theirs is quite discouraging. It’s basically a replacement for ‘we know you won’t be able to do this, so we’re trying to cushion the blow’. Prove them wrong: do your best and achieve all you want to achieve. Make them feel guilty about doubting you!

15

What you don’t know won’t hurt you

10

You’ll be sorry

Maybe you will be, maybe you won’t. Parents cannot tell the future~shocking news yes, but the can’t. Though they only have your best interest at heart, you may not regret it. If you’re always going to be cautious about everything you do, you’ll never get to experience what life has to offer.

11

I’ll tell you when you’re older

If you don’t remind them, they won’t tell you. It is probably about something they don’t know you know, whereas you really do. Confront them, and tell them you feel mature enough to handle what they’re talking about. Besides, you get older every minute.

12

The Internet’s not working or the TV’s broken

When it gets to that stage, you might as well do what they want, because in fifteen minutes to a half hour, the TV or Internet will magically be fixed and you’re parents will be ‘surprised’.

Well we could say the same to our parents, no matter what our or their age is, or what is being hidden from either party. Parents need to know that if they want their children to act like adults, then they have to treat them as such. It’s much more difficult the other way around. Yes respect must be earned but if the young adults aren’t treated with trust, the less likely it is that parents will be able to trust their kids. So parents, respect goes both ways.

Girls by

Kristina Milicevic

Fashion is full of chic It is the phrase I wanted to print on a white t-shirt, but I never did. Maybe I will do it these days. Who knows? A wardrobe full of the clothes I’ve been collecting over the years makes me reticent to buy even a single piece for the upcoming season. Sadly (or luckily?), there is no space anymore, and I’m not sure whether to feel happy or miserable about it. Led by this thought, this season try to find some nice pieces in your grandmother’s, mother’s or even grandad’s wardrobes. You could go for a grandad’s grey suit jacket, as it will fit any combination for this summer. If you are heading for elegance, then put on something white, and combine black with yellow. Also, all shades of orange and blue will warm up the fashion scene. Summer 2011 is a riot of colours~just imagine a rainbow! Finally, put your shoes on, whether they are platforms, wedges, sandals or flats, and do your own “catwalk”. It is time to make your own style this year, because this coming season, absolutely everything is in fashion.

Yellow, the new black Follow yellow signs and you won’t make a mistake this season. Yellow is the new black. You could mix it with any other colour~it’s quite thankful for mixing and matching. For example, a yellow blouse with black skirt and black flats makes a great combination. You will look stylish and attractive in the mall, at the beach and on the Walk. Don’t forget, yellow is sunshine: it could lighten up your day! This season’s quote is “liberation”. Move boundaries and explore your own style!! As my mother likes to tell me, ”Be yourself no matter what, and people will like you because of who you are!”

Flower print doesn’t look nice on everyone ~keep it simple Come on, we don’t have to look like a blossoming garden this season. You could wear a flower print, but be careful: it doesn’t look nice on everybody. Instead of wearing a flowerprint maxi dress, pick one detail that has flower prints, such as just shoes, or jacket, or blouse. If you really need more flowers wrapping around your body, at least combine them with your personality!

Really Everything! ...1950s, 1960s are huge, 1970s are as well, 1980s...

Turquoise and Yellow Turquoise was the colour of 2010, but I would make it the colour of 2011 as well. And then add yellow~these two colours mix up fantastically. Like your first romantic sunset on the beach. Recall your memories this summer.

31

Guys “King for a day, fool for a lifetime” Feel, act, walk like a king this season. I do understand that it’s a bit difficult to have your own style, because many of you are not so into the fashion, right? Could it happen that you always wear the same clothes for years? Probably when you buy a pair of shoes that you like, after a year or two you are wondering “Why, oh why didn’t I buy two pairs, so that I could have a new pair now”. I do ask myself the same question sometimes. Ok, this season with a little help and thinking direction you could really look like a king. Look at the Beatles. They were so stylish. The whole world was looking at their ways. You could do the same and the result will be guaranteed.

Cool as Ice

Black is back and White never went

“Available in all of the colors of the rainbow and the new season of chromed out metallic variations, every guy should be wearing an ICE Watch this season. Check out www.ice-watch.com for your nearest supplier.”

You won’t make a mistake if you go for a black T-shirt and white jeans with a pair of black Dr-Martens or even white Converse, and if you put on an old shaped suit jacket in maybe grey or mustard, that will come out as a mix of a military and happy ‘Seventies look.

Opposite Or do it the opposite way, match black jeans with a white T-shirt and a black vest. White shoes are a no-no this season, so stick to

The Kite Runner By Ghadeer Abeidoh

The Shadow of the Wind by Mohammad Anwar Orabi

“Books are mirrors: you only see in them what you already have inside you.” Says Julian Carax, the author of “The Shadow of the Wind” which is a book, in the book “The Shadow of the Wind” by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Truly this book is one of the very few books of our time that can doubtlessly become a classic as time goes on, and so said the Daily Telegraph’s review of it. Daniel is a ten-yearold boy who lost his loving mother to tuberculosis at a young age. His father runs the family’s secondhand book shop, which puts just enough food on the table and spare change for daily life. Sounds typically boring, right? WRONG. The story gets more intense as you read on, Labyrinthine cemetery for books, dead coming back alive, living joining the underworld’s citizens, and much more thrilling action, fiction, and mystery than you would find in a Sherlock Holmes movie starring The Expendables cast! Well maybe not that far….. but yeah, it’s more than worth your time.

Even though Riverhead books published “The Kite Runner” in 2003, it’s still considered a bestseller in Dubai for the very simple reason that it’s awesome. Khaled Husseini, the brilliant American novelist of Afghani origins, tells the story of Amir, the son of a wealthy Pashtun merchant , who befriends a Hazara boy called Hassan; Hassan is the son of Ali, the family’s servant. Despite the obvious differences in their backgrounds, the boys become best friends and are treated equally as brothers in the eyes of Baba. Amir’s desperate desire to please his father and Hassan’s loyalty lead to a series of unfortunate events after Amir wins a local tournament in kite flying. When Hassan runs for the kite, he confronts Assef and his clan, a bunch of violent sociopaths who insist on teaching Hassan a “valuable lesson”. Amir witnesses this and does nothing, but he is then overwhelmed by guilt and everything in his relationship with Hassan changes. Husseini takes us on a chronological journey through history, starting with a realistic description of the turbulence between the Pashtuns and the Hazaras in Afghanistan, moving on to the Soviet union’s invasion of Afghanistan, and never losing Amir’s personal standpoint in his narration even when describing the Taliban’s control of the country. Of course during all that, there are stories within the story: tales of brotherhood, friendship, courage, guilt, personal achievement, success, love, and redemption. In short you’re not human if you don’t cry “A Thousand Times Over”

The Prophet - Gibran Khalil Gibran

This is not a summertime must, this is a lifetime must, I consider “The Prophet” to be my guidebook. All the way from late childhood to late teenagehood, The Prophet advices you on how to lead a spiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy lifestyle.

The Lost Symbol - Dan Brown

it’s always good to keep up with some conspiracy fiction, and who does it better than Dan Brown? I would usually recommend the Da Vinci Code since it’s my favorite one by him, but it seems so cliched to recommend an all-time bestseller with 80 million copies sold. I’m just saying, you have to read Dan Brown this summer.

American gods - Neil Gayman I like this book because it mentions key characters in mythology from all possible cultural aspects. If you are looking for a really original plot, then you have to read this book.

Ask any professional, in any field, what the formula for success is, and you’ll get the same answer every time: Work hard. Stay focused. Make sacrifices, and never give up. For many of us, trying to find our calling in life is one of the biggest mysteries we will ever solve. Some may have a passion for a topic or a natural aptitude towards something, but get dissuaded along the way by “practical”, thinking parents or social or societal pressures to be something else. Knowing what you want to be at a young age and seeing that through to adulthood is truly a gift, and it takes an admirable kind of determination. Velimir Stjepanovic is one of these gifted few. At only 17 years old he is already ranked first in the world for his age in 100-metre freestyle swimming. The one8one sat down with him to find out what a day in the life of a professional swimmer is like, and what it really takes to follow your dream. How old were you when you started swimming? Well I started just swimming when I was six years old and then started competitively when I was 12. I started off just doing it for fitness because I used to do everything – karate, basketball, tennis, football, and so I was swimming maybe just once or twice a week. Then when I started swimming competitively, I started doing morning training as well and it went up to six or seven sessions a week. Five years later, I’m now up to 11 swimming sessions a week! What made you decide to pursue swimming competitively instead of the other sports you played? Well I started training with my swimming trainer, Chris Timey, when I was 12. I went overseas to Millfield in the UK for my first gala and I won a few gold medals and did really well. When we got back, Chris sat me down

and told me that he thought I had the chance to really become a top athlete in swimming. I had always loved swimming the most, so the decision to pursue it professionally became an obvious one. I never thought I’d get to where I am now; first ranked in the world for 100m freestyle for my age. You’re Serbian by nationality. How did you end up in the UAE? I was actually born in Abu Dhabi. My Dad moved here from Serbia about 20 years ago for a job and we just ended up staying here because my Dad’s work is good and my schooling is good. What is your parents’ involvement in your swimming career? Do they support your decision to pursue a sport professionally? Yeah definitely. I mean, they’re happy with anything I do! They were happy that

“To make a career out of swimming you have to work hard and make sacrifices.”

I just got to show up to the Olympics to represent Serbia and then I went and won three medals, so you can imagine how happy they were. My Mum drives me to all my training sessions because I’m not old enough to drive yet. They were never worried your focus on swimming would interfere with your school work? Well, not really, because I’ve always maintained good grades. Even now with my 11 training sessions a week, I still get good grades! You got to represent Serbia at the Youth Olympics. What was that whole experience like? It was amazing! I was the flag bearer for Serbia, so I got to stand up in front of the huge crowd. It was a really great experience. In the Olympic village where we stayed, there were pavilions for each different country, where you could go inside and learn about the country, which was cool. Just to be present amongst the top athletes in my age group was an honor, and to take away three medals was just amazing. Can you talk us through a normal day for you? Lots of swimming, we assume! Well, for a typical school day, I wake up at 4.45am. I eat breakfast, then get to the pool by 5.10am to meet my trainer, Chris. I swim from 5.30am until 7.15am then go to school which starts at 8am. School finishes at 3pm and then I’ll go

out for lunch somewhere with my friends – normally Pizza Express or something. Then I go back to the pool and do training from 4.30pm until 7pm. Then I go home and do some homework and then sleep. Then I wake up and do the exact same thing the next day! Does this sort of regime have an effect on your social life? Yeah, definitely! I mean I only have one day off a week, Saturday, and I use that day to sort of socialise. I socialise mostly in school, though, and don’t really go out with people outside of school that much. That’s sort of rare for me. So what do you do on your day off? Do you just rest? Well I definitely sleep until noon! That’s become one of my traits when having a day off. Then I see my best friends. You mentioned that you go out for pizza at lunch time. Do you have any particular diet that you have to follow as part of your training? Yeah I do. I mean I generally eat really healthily. I don’t have junk food. I eat wholemeal pasta, wholemeal bread, lots of vegetables, and I just try to eat really healthily. If you weren’t swimming what do you think you’d be doing? Honestly, no idea! It would probably be another sport of some sort. I’ve always loved sports, and even from a young age, I was always running around, doing as many activities as I

could. I really enjoy volleyball, but I don’t think I have the height required to do it professionally. I also really like water polo, but because there’s not much of an interest in it in this region, I couldn’t pursue it in any way. Now that I’m a swimmer, though, I love being a swimmer. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. What are your long term goals with your swimming career? How does someone make a career out of swimming? Well I want to go to the 2012 and 2015 Olympics. I hope to gain a medal at the 2015 Olympics because I think I’ll still be too young to get one in 2012. I’ll be 19 years old then, so I might

get into a final, but I doubt that I will place. To make a career out of swimming, you have to work hard and make sacrifices. I get paid a certain amount by the Serbian Federation to maintain my training costs, trips to competitions overseas, gym memberships and so on. A lot of the money that swimmers make is through endorsements and sponsorships. Do you think there’s a certain aspect of natural ability required or can you be trained to become a great swimmer? Natural ability will come into it, obviously. You can’t just train someone to run as fast as Usain Bolt, for example - they had to have had the natural ability to do it first. What advice would you give to those who want to pursue swimming as a profession? You have to be willing to fight for what you want. You have to be willing to sacrifice a lot of things in order to become the best that you can. You can’t be the best without sacrificing. You should also try to find a trainer as early as possible to guide you in the right direction. by Dahlia Haleem

Gizmos & Gadgets

Hi, I am Format, and I talk, breathe and think electronics. It’s been a rough couple of months for the giants in the Industry. Japan’s disaster and its supply strains , Apple ‘s iOS4 locationtracking fiasco and all the buzz with it, Sony Playstation Network’s standstill (or a Hack , if that’s what rocks your boat)! FUN! Ah, and for last, here is a small rumor for you guys. The iPhone 5 is being delayed until September at the earliest. Happy networking , just remember to do it securely. Format.

“For those who’ve been living under a rock , here today is the day of enlightenment!”

Playstation Network

Sony, poor dear Sony, this is 2011. People are smart, hackers are smarter. Did the folks back in Japan really think that they could get away with a few simple questions on an email and birth year to be secure? No, that’s not how it goes! Inevitably, the network was hacked, which resulted in over 13,000,000 credit card details being stolen and over 100,000,000 users’ personal data being revealed. It took them almost 3three weeks (!) to bring it back from oblivion, though they did launch a “Welcome Back” program, featuring free games, to ease the pain. However, on May 18 , the Network was hacked again, this time resulting in the same ,already revealed, data being used illegitimately. Let’s hope PlayStation recovers, and recovers FAST!

iPhone Tracker Now, Apple. On one lovely April morning , somebody far, far away released an opensource tool called “iPhone Tracker”, which caused a tornado within seconds of its release. Here is the deal; a tiny file was discovered on any 3G-equipped iDevice running iOS 4 as well as in the iTunes library that the device was synced to. This file contained your iDevice’s location data, collected since the release of iOS4 (last June). The ‘iPhone Tracker” tool simply took that data and beautifully displayed it on a map, showing you just about every place you’d been to since you updated/purchased your shiny iDevice. As you’d expect, Apple was called for a Senate hearing , and made it clear that it never collected the data, assuring users that they would receive an update to fix the issue once and for all. You could start complaining and rush to the garbage bin to toss all the Apple goodness you’ve got , or you could simply stop and admit that our lives stopped being completely private the moment we joined Facebook.

Chromebook Google is all about the cloud, guys, and its Chromebooks are coming. Okay, the big G just announced its new generation of computing. You get your laptop (Google Chromebook for now) and you just work straight out of a browser-based OS. Chromium has been under development for over a year now and is ready for your gadget-loving hands/minds/souls. Google wants you to store everything on an online cloud and that is it. You have your files somewhere out there, and your laptop is clean and fast. The first batch of this wireless goodness is to be released in June, manufactured by Samsung and Acer.

Samsung Galaxy S2 The good news is ,Samsung has blessed us all with its new Galaxy S II. Let me just say that the device is absolutely stunning. It’s 8.3 mm thin, has a 4.3 “ Super AMOLED display, runs Android 2.3.3, and thanks to that dual core processor ,it’s very snappy. In my opinion, it’s simply the best Android device on the market. It’s thinner than the iPhone 4, got a bigger display (no Retina) ,feels much better than its predecessor and is faster than almost anything out there. The cameras on this baby are 8 megapixel at the back and 2 megapixel at the front. Look out for it in the shops ,as Samsung is never late on its deliveries.

Win! me-movies.com have got 40 tickets to the

premiere of Green Lantern to give away so log on to their website and see how you can get one.

Movies

Green Lantern While not as well known as his fellow DC Superheroes, Superman and Batman, The Green Lantern has a vibrant fan base among comic book fans, and he could make a successful transition from a niche comic book character to a mainstream film franchise. Starring an ensemble cast headed by Ryan Reynolds, the film tells the story of Hal Jordan, a test pilot for the American Air Force who becomes the first ever human inducted into the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps. This is a brotherhood of warriors who seek to maintain peace and stability in the universe. When Hal Jordan becomes the first human Green Lantern, he finds the fate of not only the Green Lantern Corps, but also of Earth itself, lying in his hands, when a new force of evil, Parallax, emerges.

X-Men First Class Before Professor X and Magneto, there was Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. They were two close friends who worked together to help other mutants understand their powers. While initially the film was going to be about the younger and lesser-known mutants in Charles Xavier’s school, the decision to make the film a prequel that explores the origins of Professor X and Magneto is a welcome one. The film follows Charles and Erik building their team of mutant heroes, which consists of new and familiar faces, working together to avert the threat of Nuclear Apocalypse. In the process, hints of their future rivalries start to emerge, and their opposing world views become apparent

Mr. Popper’s Penguins Who doesn’t love Jim Carrey? Aside from a few mishaps, he has proven himself a leading comedic actor of modern times, as well a formidable dramatic actor. He returns to the comedy genre with Mr. Popper’s Penguins, an adaptation of a children’s book about Tom Popper, a clueless businessman who inherits six penguins. As he tries to accommodate them, his life turns upside down. This will no doubt lead to Mr. Popper learning life lessons and gaining new perspectives, all while being funny, since he is played by Jim Carrey. The fact that the film uses real penguins instead of CGI gives it plus points too.

Super 8 Who would’ve known that telling you absolutely nothing about a film would turn out to be a brilliant marketing strategy? Coming from legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg and film (and TV) juggernaut J. J. Abrams, fans couldn’t help but get excited about the film. It was thanks in part to a secretive marketing campaign. Taking place in 1979, the movie follows a group of teenagers as they shoot a film on a super 8 camera, when they unwittingly film a train crash, which they suspect is no accident. The investigations lead to ominous discoveries.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon While Michael Bay won’t be winning any Oscars soon, his Transformers films are undoubtably crowd pleasers. The fact that their collective box office gross reach up to 1.5 billion dollars proves this. In the latest installment of the Transformers franchise, the Autobots and Decepticons learn about the existence of a Cybertonian spacecraft on the moon, and each must get to the spacecraft before the other, as it could determine the outcome of their war. Early reviews of this film have claimed that it is the best of the franchise. And the concept of ninemetre robots fighting against each other appeals to the little kid in all of us.

Cars 2 Pixar seems to understand how much the world needs one of its animations every summer. The animation stuido’s entry for this year is Cars 2, the sequel to the 2006 hit. Following Pixar’s trademark simplicity in storytelling, the film follows race car Lightning McQueen, the star from the first film, and his friend Mater, as they take part in International Grand Prix, which takes them to the streets of Europe and Japan. Throughout the story, Mater gets caught in the world of international espionage when he is confused for an American spy, and is torn between supporting his friend, and carrying out top secret spy missions.

Saif Chilmran Graffiti’s Gratifications

No matter where you go, there is always a neglected message exposed in art; often, you tend to think the person behind the work is troubled, lost or confused. Graffiti is often a misunderstood form of expression while also a form of art. This particular art form is often overlooked all over the world. Saif Chilmran is a graffiti artist who has found a mass of inspiration living in this desert, expressing himself through his work. He has confidence in what he does and believes in what he wants. The world of this gratifying art began for Saif at a young age. In the third and fourth grades, he would sit in his classes, drawing in his notebook rather than paying attention to lessons. “When I was 13 years old, I was skating with a bunch of friends around abandoned villas with only Dh5 on me for my cab ride home,” he says. “I went into a supermarket to buy a Coke when I saw a can of black spray paint on the shelf. I had to make a choice: either buy the paint and skate back home~about a 35 minute journey~or buy the Coke, forget the paint, and take a cab home. I went with the first option, picked up the spray can, and it was love at first sight.” According to Saif, the feeling of creating graffiti is something that kicks inside of you when words can’t describe it. He exclaims that he feels euphoric and gets a huge adrenaline rush feeling free with no limitations or boundaries~in his words, “I feel pure.” People often look down at graffiti, which in a sense is why it presents such a thrill for its many artists. For this young practitioner, his opinion is that 99 per cent of the population doesn’t understand it. “It’s rejected and there are no guidelines for it. It’s dirty, socially unaccepted, rebellious, filthy, risky, hated. I just love it!” As every young artist develops their artwork and styles as they grow older and garner more experience, Safe to has developed in this way. His art began to escalate slowly, beginning in 2003, and in 2007 he started getting commissioned work from gaming lounges, private houses, cafes and retail shops. However having his work put up in other places that are not of his choosing is not what he prefers. Saif says, “Honestly, I don’t enjoy it as much as the walls I choose myself”. His favorite art pieces are numerous. Among his favorites are Banksy’s lifesize Guantanamo prisoner doll that was hung in the middle of a ride at Disney Land. In addition to Banksy he says, “I also love SEEN’s stuff, all the work by Does, Pose, Ewok and other artists. I appreciate most artists’ works.” When asked what he loves most about being an artist, Saif is concentrated on his feelings. “The best thing about being an artist is it makes you look at everything in a different way. Whenever I see something I always have to think about the design behind it, how it’s made, and things like that. Also the best thing is the exchange I made; I know art will not make me rich, and buy me fancy cars and big mansions; instead I get complete satisfaction in life. When people go out every day, everything is ugly. The grey roads, the square shaped buildings, their rooms, and so on. So when they see a bunch of colors on a wall in a random spot, they get a small shock and that pleases me.” A true budding artist, this young man’s dreams are only beginning to become fulfilled- and as he grows, so does his artwork. You can find examples of Saif’s work at www.saif-chilmiran.com, or you can check out his work at Pro Art Gallery at Palm Strip Mall Jumeirah. By Miral Bushnaq

Its fun and its great to hang out with your friends and do sports at the same time.

It was tough but overall quite fun: a good day, good weather, good people. What more could you want?

The Dubai International Dragon Boating regatta was held in Dubai Festival City in April. It returned for a fourth consecutive year, attracting individuals from different colleges, universities, schools and companies to enjoy the thrilling water sport. This event included sportspeople of various ages and nationalities, all coming together to form competitive teams. ‘Dragon Boating is a thrilling watersport full of adrenaline, sportsmanship, strategy and technique. It is also a sport that is about positive team spirit, being healthy, making friends and having fun.’ This was the motto for the weekend and, indeed, the atmosphere matched the high expectations. by

Poems Garden of Silence by anonymous

The trees are green, the sky is purple blue Roses are pink and red Rays of light from the sun coming through my Window As I lay comfortable on my bed My eyes are closed, yet I see everything My mouth is shut, but I speak with my heart As nature sings its melody There, my new life starts I sail with the wind far away from my home To a place nobody knows Where the sun burns bright and flowers bloom And gentle sweet wind blows I hear nothing but the leaves moving on the Trees The sound of their tinkle together I feel nothing but the chilly breeze on my skin So soft, gentle and tender I could smell the scent of the roses My body is in rest I lie on the ground and smell fresh air Cold, running through my chest Where am I? Am I in heaven? I feel the nature surrounding me With beauty and perfection I want to stay forever But I must wake one day from my imagination

Smile by Afra Galadari

A smile helps brings us at ease. A touch helps us forget A word pushes the tears away. Wipes off the regrets We can help cure ill nations And let love Be our light and salvation We can place smiles on every face. Have them appear full of grace. Happiness will bloom in all of us. Our eyes shine as bright as stars. Trust me, all that will happen. And we can go far. All you have to do is love Is care Is be full of warmth. And all the sadness will be no more. So be happy. Love & be loved. ‘Cause in the end that’s all you got. It’s one simple rule. It’s nothing like school. It’s the cause and effect of being a great person. And we all have one inside us.

I can remember that day as if it was yesterday. It was the day of the Terry Fox Run, and I was so excited,as it was GYEM’s debut to the world, if I remember correctly. I decided to take pictures over the course of the whole day. I remember taking around a thousand-plus shots of random things from dustbins to random people participating. I even took some of Team GYEM while they were working on the recycled sculpture. More importantly, while I was looking through the photos in my camera, I came to this shot. It was colored back then so it didn’t really impact me, but then suddenly I remembered a quote. It was, “When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls.” Ted Grant said it. I immediately went into my photo editing program and converted it to black and white and, bam! I was amazed not only at the fact that you can see the emotion of the subject clearly, but also how you can create a lot of stories from that single photo. After this I was really inspired to take more photos, but this time I would pay a lot more consideration to black and white. By Moustafa Gabriel

Mum’s hopes Dear Wonder Coach, My mom wants me to be a doctor because she says I will be a “successful leader”. My brother and sister are special needs kids, so she says that I am her only hope. But I don’t want to be a doctor; it’s too much of a responsibility. I love my mom and I’m afraid that if I fail college then all that money will be wasted. I’m good at computers but I don’t want to have an IT career. I love her dearly but what should I do?

Thank you for openly sharing your worries and frustrations. It is not easy to decide what career path we want to take as young adults. Together with the hopes and aspirations that your mother expresses for you, it is no doubt that you are feeling confused about your decisions for the future. Firstly, I would like to let you know that it is not uncommon for parents to have high hopes and dreams for their children. However, from what you have written to me, the weight of responsibility that your mother lays on you when she says that you are her ‘only hope’ is a concern. Also, I am sensing that alongside the stress of letting your mother down, you are also not feeling very confident about your future career plans. I suggest that you sit down with your mother and share how you are feeling with her. Let her know what your worries, your hopes and your dreams are. When you have finished, ask her what her hopes and dreams were when she was your age. You may be surprised at the wonderful dreams she had. Finally, let her know that becoming a doctor is not your dream and together you can begin to discover what career choices do interest you. I recommend discussing career choices with your school career advisor or seeking the support from a professional career coach.

Dear Wonder Coach, I always found it weird that my friends know exactly what they want to be when they grow up; I kind of enjoyed the mystery of it, because every day I could dream of being something new. But I’m graduating in another two years and I have no idea what I want to be. How can I decide on a career I can both commit to and love?

What do I want? Congratulations on developing the skill of dreaming! Dreaming is something we should all spend time doing and it is a very important stage in the ‘levels of reality’ TM of CRR. What I notice you saying is that at the ‘essence’ you want to feel love in your chosen career. I encourage you now to go back to your dreaming but this time, I ask that you dream with a focus. Ask yourself, “If I could choose a career that lets me feel love, what could it be?” Don’t stop after the first thought, keep brainstorming. If you must, ‘sleep on it’ and then keep asking yourself this same question until you have exhausted all of your ideas. The next stage after dreaming is called the ‘Consensus Reality Stage’ and what this means, in simple terms, is that it is the stage of setting goals and taking actions to achieve your goals. Remember to enjoy this wonderful journey and to give yourself a chance to dream, because in every dream there is the power to grow!

Am I a workaholic? Thank you for sending me such a clear picture of your situation right now. There are so many angles to look at in this dilemma. What you are describing to me is very normal and by voicing it here today, know that you will be helping many other teenagers, so you are making a positive difference already. There are so many pressures being put on the youth these days at school and at home. The added pressures are increasing stress levels to never-before-seen levels, and, as a parent and a family specialist, I find this very worrying. The three key words that are standing out for me are hard work; perfectionist and workaholic. It sounds to me that you are carrying a lot of judgement with you about yourself and of what you ‘think’ you must become. How is judging yourself and comparing yourself to other kids your age serving you? On the one hand, you are acknowledging that you want to make a positive difference in the world, but on the other hand you are labelling yourself with words that feel ‘heavy’ on you. It seems to me like there is one part of you that ‘believes’ you ‘should’ be all of those things that make you a workaholic, but the other part of you is secretly wishing he could just hang out with his friends. This is one of my favourite quick tips: Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle to make two columns. In the first column, label it ‘Who/What I am’ and label the second column ‘Who/What I am not’. Spend some time reflecting on the answers and fill in the columns. By the end of the exercise, you will have a long list of things that ‘fit’ who you are. Take these learnings and use them to create ‘your world and your experiences’. Ask yourself, “If I could make a difference in the world and still have time for hanging out with my friends, what could I do?” Imagine yourself blending these two parts of yourself as you would a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Discover who you are and enjoy the journey!

Dad’s push This seems like a very challenging issue for you and for your family. I would like to acknowledge you for your courage to seek out support during this difficult time. I understand that you are feeling very emotionally attached to this situation and this is very normal. I would be concerned if you didn’t respond to the negative feedback that you are receiving. However, it sounds to me like your father’s criticism towards you is stopping your relationship with him from flourishing, as well as causing you to react by defending yourself in return. Criticism, blame and defensiveness are relationship breakers, no matter the context or circumstances they are used in. My professional suggestion is that you try to visit a relationship coach. There are many tools that will recover and improve your relationship with your father and, in turn, the entire family. I encourage you to do this because, as you described the issue to me, it seems very negatively charged. In order for everyone in the relationship to see the wisdom and opportunity that lays ahead, caution should be taken and a relationship coach is trained to do just that.

Dear Wonder Coach, I am 17 and I’m afraid I’m becoming a workaholic. I’ve always known that I want to make a positive difference in the world and the only way I can do that is through hard work. I’m an A student, a member of the football team, and I write for the school paper. I am a perfectionist, I’m very hard on myself and I get severe headaches regularly. I know I’m better than most of the kids my age, but I’m afraid I’m becoming a workaholic because I hardly have time for my friends and they never invite me to hang out with them anymore. How can I relax and take it slow?

Dear Wonder Coach, I am an 18-year-old boy and my dad and I just do not get along. Every time I say something he lets me know what a failure I am and how dumb and stupid I am. No matter what I do, his reaction is the same. My mom says that this is just his way of pushing me to be better, and to be the best at everything. I don’t understand how the way he treats me can make me better. Once he even started screaming at me just because I told him that I was NOT going to be a failure and will work hard to become someone important in life. What do I do? Should I understand what he’s doing because it’s for my own good?

NUTRITION Fat Cells Stay Scientists have discovered that the number of fat cells in the body is set during childhood and adolescence, and remains constant during adulthood. Every time a fat cell dies, our body helpfully replaces it (interesting!). This means our body shape in childhood and adolescence will impact us for life. Great news for those of us who enjoy binging! Fat cells are set during childhood and remain constant in number. As one dies, another replaces it. Once fat cells become full, they divide and make more cells quite easily. Sadly, while cells can increase in number, they cannot be reduced. They only shrink. So no matter how healthy adults are, the baby and teenage fat will unfortunately still be around. by Stephanie Carl

6 Underlooked Basics for Better Nutrition

1.

Drink a lot of water.

The more water the better! Water is very important for your body’s metabolism. It helps everything from hair growth to breathing, making it one of the most important resources that your body needs. It’s also important to know that the body can mistake thirst for hunger. At many times you think you’re hungry when you’re just thirsty, so hydrate yourself a bit before you charge at that burger, will you?

4.

Don’t neglect your fat, carbohydrates,

vitamins, fiber, and protein. You’re a growing teenager. The fatty acids in fish like salmon, such as Omega 3, are mandatory for better brain function and intelligence, superior cardiovascular health, and even relieving pain and inflammation! Your carbohydrates are your body’s number one source of energy, your protein is your muscles’ building block and your fiber is essential for a healthy digestive system. And don’t forget the importance of vitamins to everything, including the growth of hair and improvement of the immune system.

2.

Eat more often.

Your body is very smart, and its number one aim is to stay alive. Think of your body as a fireplace; if you toss one huge lump of a log in there at once, you will end up with an almost equivalent lump of charcoal. If the log was your meal, then the charcoal is the stored fat. What you want to do is minimize the meals, so you have just what your body needs at any one time. Two hours later, eat again. This way you keep your metabolism active, and you’re not starving at any moment of the day!

5.

Go with better options.

Replace simple carbohydrates such as white flour and pasta with complex carbohydrates like whole-wheat bread and brown rice, to get the most benefit from each calorie you’re eating. Replace your regular saturate fats like frying oil and grease with healthy fats like those in olives, avocadoes, and fatty fish like salmon. Swap your glass of fruit juice for a couple of pieces of fruit, as they contain the same benefit, but they fill you up more since you’re keeping all the fiber there.

3.

Go easy on the salt!

It’s necessary to consume salt, yet have too much of it, and you’re on your way to water retention. A very simple explanation to this is that our bodies rely on electrolytes - most significantly sodium and potassium. A constant concentration of electrolytes must be maintained, therefore by eating more salt, your thirst mechanism will activate due to the high concentration of electrolytes in blood. This leads you to drink excess amounts of water, which, through osmosis, flows into your skin giving you that puffy look. And this is all without mentioning the negative effects of excess salt on blood pressure!

6.

Eat more organic foods and less processed foods.

Does it even need explaining? When you look at a can of hotdogs, and it has ingredients that you can’t even pronounce, are you sure it’s safe to eat? According to the World Health Organization, processed foods are to blame for the spike in obesity levels and chronic disease around the world. by Mohammad Orabi

Astrology

June Gemini

Aries

(21 March – 20 April) More is happening this month and the good luck you’ve always had has something to do with it. This is the time to educate yourself further and take courses that may benefit you in university or in your future job. Slow down after the 21st and try to relax and pace yourself. Don’t let those IT glitches get to you, just fix them quick and move on. Change is happening at school or university. Look at your philosophy in life and ask yourself, “What do I want?”

Taurus

(21 April – 20 May) It’s time to start thinking BIG. What do you want? How can you get it? Write up your goals and your strategies and go for it. If you come up to someone with a great idea, they will be willing to invest in you. Things happen that make you get down to the important things in life. There will be disagreements with friends, but be gentle and don’t make things worse. Always remember that too much of a good thing is bad for you.

Libra

Leo

(21 July – 20 August) You are successful and can finally see that you can do things that you never thought were possible. Everything comes to you if you just take the step forward. You’re having fun so enjoy it. Your main interest now is your group of friends and some old friendships will be tested. But it’s just because you’re making new friends and your group is growing. You know that whatever you don’t finish this month, you’ll still have to finish next month, right?

Sagittarius

(23 November – 20 December) You might want to take it easy this month and focus on your health. You’ve been partying for most of the past five months, so it’s time to calm down and relax. Something will happen to prevent you from making a bad decision. Wardrobe changes are what you’re thinking about, something to match the new summer you. Focus on one day at a time and you will get what you want.

(21 May – 20 June) Loads of events and many changes are in store this month. Focus on your family and work on yourself on the inside. You will find many friends that share the spiritual values closest to your heart, where you involve yourself in the causes that you strongly believe in. Work on the concept of self. How do you see yourself and how do you want to be perceived?

Virgo

(21 August – 20 September) A very eventful and fast paced month. You will learn to deal with changes as they come up. A very weird event will happen this month due to the eclipse. It will also test your friendships. Keep doing what you’re doing and if there are any obstacles, they will be magically removed. For those of you applying for university or higher education, things will go smoothly.

(21 September – 20 October) There are challenges for those of you who are applying to universities. You may decide on a different major, last-minute. If you’re not accepted into one university, that’s just because you’re getting accepted by a much better one. Things that used to matter a lot to you don’t matter anymore. Neighbors may move out and new ones move in. Don’t let technology irritate you. If something doesn’t work, fix it.

Aquarius Capricorn

(21 December- 19 January) The turbulence you see in the world is representative of what’s going on inside you. Lighten up and see the fun in everything you do. Pretend to laugh and you won’t be able to stop. Excersise those facial muscles and show people your smile. Find yourself a creative hobby to unleash the creativity that needs to come out.

(20 January- 18 February) You are happy when with family because you realize that it’s not all blood ties and obligations. It’s also friendships. What would you do without your annoying brothers or sisters? This is the time to enjoy the little things in life, just like you did when you were five years old. Simple things can make you happy. You have all the energy you need to achieve any goal you ever dreamed of, so step up and go for it.

Cancer

(21 June – 20 July) A very exciting and eventful month. Loads of things happening and many changes are coming your way. You either achieved your goals or are making great progress; big goals just need more time. After all of this hard work, you are ready to focus on your friends and social life. You are more in the mood for socializing and taking care of your spiritual needs. If something hurts you, get it checked out. But don’t worry, you’ll be fine.

Scorpio

(23October – 22 November) You are ready to receive a gift. Your social calendar has been so full lately that you never know where that special gift might come from. Exposure to all kinds of different people makes you think about what you can learn from each and every one of them. Next month you will know who you’ll want to stay in contact with, but for now enjoy the company. Start watching your spending habits; spending might not always be this easy.

Pisces

(19 February- 20 March) There may be some very small challenges in store for you this month, but they’re tiny, so smile and deal with them fast. Take up a creative hobby; it will do wonders for you emotionally. Be more patient with your parents; you never know what they’re going through either. If there are any negative emotions from the past that you didn’t deal with, you might want to do that now. Look at them from the outside, as a third person looking in, and you will be able to replace them with positive emotions.

July Aries

(21 March – 20 April) Your way is not always the best way, so polish your social skills, be more flexible and listen to those who refuse to follow. Your friends might have a point; try to see things from their eyes. Whatever you have done and learned this past year you’re putting to the test. Make sure you keep the best learning. Give your family some attention and spend time with them; they might need you. Be happy on the inside and all will be perfect.

Leo

(21 July – 20 August) This is the time to look back and evaluate your past. Finish whatever needs to be finished, forgive friends that need to be forgiven. Once you’ve done that you can set your goals. Visualize what you want; smell it, feel it, taste it, because you already have it, it’s on its way to you. This is the time to take care of the things that you had left undone last month. Have fun! No one knows how to have fun better than a Leo.

Taurus

(21 April – 20 May) Your mind is growing and is sharper than ever. It’s the best time to train your brain. Read about things that interest you and attend workshops on things you enjoy. Write down your thoughts and play around with your new ideas. University students will have companies pursuing them. Don’t neglect your family and be more patient with your parents. Memories will come back so you can resolve them if needed.

Virgo

(21 August – 20 September) The newspapers are filled with bad news; earthquakes, war, revolutions. Things are happening. Your friends will face dramatic events (good or bad) and that will test your relationships with them. Support them if they need it, and be there for them if they don’t. You feel very healthy, but you might want to slow things down a little if you’ve been too active. Secrets are uncovered. Get involved in group activities if you want to put your summer time to good use.

Capricorn Sagittarius

(23 November – 20 December) Listen to your body; it will tell you when enough is enough. If you need to go to the doctor for something major, always get a second opinion. This is the time to purify your body and mind, as well as your room. Throw away all the junk and extra stuff not just in your room, but in your mind as well, and watch yourself come to life again.

(21 December- 19 January) You should be taking it easy this month. Your friendships will be tested and things that haven’t come up earlier will come up now, so you can deal with them once and for all. There are many more social activities in store for you this month, so have fun. Watch your finances, though, and do your homework before you buy that expencive thing you wanted. Avoid risky activities and pay attention to your food. Just like your mom always says, “Junk’s not good for you.”

Gemini

(21 May – 20 June) Always remember that we get what we pay attention to and focus on. So what do you want? Write it down, maybe even create a vision board. Write all the little details of everything you want and watch it come to you. You have all the strength to deal with whatever is coming your way because it was not planned and will come completely unexpected. Once you deal with it, it will help you in the long term.

Libra

(21 September – 20 October) What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger, so keep going. Do not listen to your friends who’ve come up with crazy diet plans, particularly if you really need to consult a professional. When choosing your electives, chose ones that will not give you stress. Socialize and you’ll meet loads of new and interesting people who may become good friends. You will start to become interested in things that you never thought you would - like astrology.

Aquarius

(20 January- 18 February) Something will happen that will force you to change the way you look at junk food. Get enough sleep; those long nights will not do you any good. Take afternoon naps if needed. There are good changes coming your way. Having friends is still about going out and having fun, it’s just you enjoy friends that are a little more serious. The ones you believe in will be your friends forever.

Cancer

(21 June – 20 July) You are happier than ever. You are trying out an expensive image, dressing well and acting glamorous. You look GOOD! This month will have a huge impact on your personality, appearance and image, while you try to figure out who you really are. Some friends may not be too tolerant of the changes, or supportive of the new things you do, but good friends always come around.

Scorpio

(23October – 22 November) You’re good, but those around you might not be so be nice. If you’re at university then changes are coming. It’s good when your beliefs are tested; that way you can get rid of false beliefs and replace them with new ones. What you believe in is what will happen so chose to live on the positive side. You don’t have much financial support from your parents, so watch your spending.

Pisces

(19 February- 20 March) You’ve been noticing how much drama people around you can create. You will make important decisions regarding education plans, and all will work out to your benefit. You are supercharged this month, so put that energy to good use. Expand your mind and give it the pleasure of working on fun stuff.

August Aries

(21 March – 20 April) Progress is slower this month. You have to wait for other people to make decisions that will impact yours, which takes time. Use this to learn patience; you will need it later on in life. Avoid destructive criticism and learn how to project warmth onto others. Focus on the boring things that you should have done ages ago and just get it over with. Take your health seriously, because ‘you are what you eat’.

Leo

(21 July – 20 August) It’s finally time to get away, but don’t go crazy spending. Spend on the usual stuff, but when it comes to big items, think about it really well. You feel very lucky, and the places you go to seem to give you a spiritual recharge. Give yourself more time to travel and enjoy every minute. You exude happiness, so give some to your family and friends; they love to see you happy.

Taurus

(21 April – 20 May) You do what you want and enjoy the fun side of life. You will notice younger children more, and may even be involved in something to do with children, simply because you’ve been feeling and acting much younger than your age. Watch out for impulsive spending; it’s not the right time. You have been overly independent and now it’s time to work on your social skills. Learn to better adapt yourself to people.

(21 May – 20 June) Make all your important decisions regarding the things you want to do before you start your studies again. You may not get the time later. You seem not to know where you’re going or where you want to go but don’t let it get to you. You have a sharp mind and are capable of many things. Keep doing what you’re good at and visualize having the things that you want. Find the time to relax and enjoy yourself.

Cancer

(21 June – 20 July) Sure you have responsibilities, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find time for good friends and family. You can’t fail, even if you wanted to, at anything you do this month. You seem okay with all the changes that are still going on in your life, so keep it up. Your money lasts you for quite some time, but invest in things that won’t go in the garbage. Create what you want in life and let the universe adapt to you and your needs, but watch your temper.

Libra Virgo

(21 August – 20 September) You are extremely independent and are enjoying it. You love having things your way. Why adapt to the world when the world can adapt to you? Know what you want, plan for the future, set your goals, visualize them, and it will all come to you. Just take the first step. Glamour is in your charts and everyone can see it. Listen to your feelings; they’re always right.

Sagittarius Capricorn (23 November – 20 December) You have been very ambitious, but have always had strong ethics. This is why you are now seeing all the rewards of your hard work. You’ve done it all on your own and worked towards your goals. Yes, people might have opened doors for you, but you did the hard work. Remember that you are a mentor to the younger ones, and are a student to those older than you. Improvements can always be made, no matter how good you’ve become.

Gemini

(21 December- 19 January) You have more energy and vitality this month. Always listen to your heart and go after what you want without fear. You’ll get what you want most of the time. Just walk up to people and don’t be afraid to talk to them. When things don’t go your way, learn to get up, dust yourself off and move on. You are going out with your family much more, so be more patient with them, they love you.

(21 September – 20 October) You are becoming more experimental. Sure, there may be obstacles that you need to overcome, but you will always succeed if you want it enough. Don’t stop, because when things finally happen, they will be BIG. You’re already playing the balancing act with friends, so if there are misunderstandings take it easy; you don’t want to make things worse. You will mix with powerful people, so get ready.

(20 January- 18 February) Maintain higher energy levels this month and don’t overdo it. Choose a sport, get up and get those muscles working. You have been working hard to reach your goals and you will see the rewards very soon. There will be more going out, partying, gathering and mixing with different kinds of people. Look into your past and resolve the things you have bad feelings about. Think about what you learned from those situations and use it to your benefit.

(23October – 22 November) Your energy is not up to its usual standards. Control your mood and avoid people who are depressing or have negative vibes. You’ll notice how people tend to always over react to everything. Work hard towards your goal and you’ll get there. Everything takes time. You love hanging out with influential people; they give you good energy. Remember that not everyone’s perfect.

(19 February- 20 March) It’s time to let others have their way. Yes, you’ve been constructively focusing on yourself and you got amazing results, but now it’s time to think of others. Put other people in your spotlight and you will enjoy making them happy. When in an argument with a friend, you realize that you’re both right. Just agree to disagree and don’t make any irrational decisions. Take more risks (without harming anyone, of course). Have fun!

A Dog’s Eye A blind man with a seeing eye dog at his side walks into a grocery store. You’ve got a great sense of style, and appreciate art, literature and music. You like to enjoy life and are always looking for a good time, and you’re probably a bit more laidback about school work than your teachers and parents would like. But it doesn’t matter, because the world would be a less interesting place without you.

17-24

You’re a sports-loving jock. You’re involved in one or more of the school’s sports teams, and your efforts gain you a good amount of recognition and popularity among the student body. You only hang out with the most popular people, and you normally travel from class to class with an entourage behind you. Even the hipsters have to admit that they wouldn’t mind being like you.
