Nat Geo View (iOS, Android)

Momentum (iOS)

The world is an unusually distinct place. We’re often too busy to notice it, and that's where Nat Geo View comes in. With the help of your phone or tablet, you can get a better idea of what the world around you has to offer. The app posts imagery and stories from some of the most remote places in the world. It brings you exactly what the magazine would but delivers it in high resolution on your phone.

Have you heard of the 'don’t break the chain' productivity method? It’s a way of getting things done that is based on the idea that the more you do something and the more often you see your progress, the harder it will be to stop. Momentum utilises a similar idea by encouraging you to keep working to form good habits, break bad ones, and get things done.

The Outcast (iOS)

VaporChat (iOS)

The Outcast isn’t like normal games, where you sit and play to kill time — it prompts you with events that occur as you go about your day. The story is told with gorgeous images and you’re presented with difficult decisions that you must go about making when you least expect it. The passive adventure will surprise you, both in the choices you have to make and when they show up.

Security is quickly becoming the most sought-after feature in mobile messaging. VaporChat may be the best when it comes to private messages. The app keeps the message under the control of the sender at all times, meaning they can revoke a message, photo, or entire conversation. Nothing can be copied, screenshotted, or stored without your permission or knowledge.

The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya

Director: Jesse Mossns

Cast: Aki Asakura, Kengo Kora Takeo Chii, Nobuko Miyamoto

The Book of Life is a 2014 animation featuring voice-overs from Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube. The film’s plot centres around a love triangle between Manulo, Maria and, you guessed it, the Lord of The Underworld, set in a colourful Mexican backdrop. Director Jorge Gutierrez has received a Golden Globe nomination for his cast’s work.

When the time comes to choose a job, will a career find your or will you find a career? As this documentary displays, chasing a wealthy lifestyle is full of its ups, downs and rivets. Follow The Overnighters, which documents the riveting lives of transplant oil workers in North Dakota, and the community they seem to be uprooting.

From Studio Ghibli comes the Tale of The Princess Kaguya. This story is set in feudal Japan, where a farmer discovers a princess within the bark of a bamboo tree, whose elegant nature attracts suitors from across the country. The drawing on this Oscar-winning film is minimalist, yet beautifully rendered and cost nearly $80 million.

Albums by Jacob Stenhouse

Courtney Barnett Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit Courtney Barnett is only on her first official album, but she's already setting herself apart as one of the most blunt original songwriters around — at any level, in any genre. The Australian singer-guitarist has an honest, funny, unforgettable way of writing lyrics that is almost like writing stories inspired by everyday stuff. It is great listening to her easy, loose conversational-style lyrics that are so full of images and stories. It becomes difficult to forget her characters, and through the album, you just feel the need to find out more and more.

Ludacris Ludaversal Ludacris has clearly been more focused on his acting career with movies such as Fast and Furious. But after five long years he has finally released his ninth album, Ludaversal, to prove to everybody, in a not-so-subtle way, his staying power within the music industry. Luda is one of the most creatively flexible rappers of his era. This album shows his adaptability by mixing R&B, hip-hop, pop and rap music. Rap fans with memories of the early ‘00s will always have a fondness for Ludacris, and it’s hard not to want to root for him. But unfortunately, this latest effort is not up to the usual mark of what is expected of him.

Home A well-made animation movie showing a group of aliens called the Boovs leaving their planet and making Earth their new home. Amongst these aliens, “Oh” is one of a kind, an alien that sees things differently with an open heart, and is willing to be kind to the human race. The movie is based on Oh’s (Jim Parson) adventure with Tip (Rihanna) while looking for her mother Lucy (Jennifer Lopez) who has been relocated by the Boovs to another country. Overall the movie is funny and light. It conveys several messages about kindness, how to be different and still be loved, and how we see fear in certain events and people while the reality could be the total opposite to how it might seem. If you are looking for a movie that will make you laugh, be happy, and enhance your imagination, then Home is the one you need to see.

Furious 7 Just when Toretto and his gang thought they were out of trouble, an old enemy seeking revenge creeps in. With a new great cast, this over-the-top action movie cannot go wrong. Jason Statham does a fantastic job as the undefeated enemy seeking revenge for his brother, and Kurt Russel plays Mr Nobody, an unknown character that gets involved and helps the gang. Not only do the lead characters have to fight with Statham, they also compete with him to steal God’s Eye, a terrorist program. In this film you will see almost all of the characters and cameos of the previous series, including Paul Walker, who passed away during filming. This movie is a must-see, and does not fail to entertain you. We can vouch that it is faster, and more furious, than its predecessors, and will leave you at the edge of your seat. Any fans of the franchise should not miss out on watching this.

STEP Conference 2015 IT’S A WRAP

The 2015 STEP Conference lived up to its promise to be the biggest, best and most disruptive yet — with a bold promise of much more growth to come. Ray Dargham, STEP founder, said: “Just a few years ago, we were a small conference with big dreams. But we were determined to chart the steps needed to grow. Look at us today — a long way from our small beginnings. That growth is not about to stop. If we continue at the same pace we will be the biggest tech & start-up conference in the entire Middle East and will have 10,000 global attendees coming to STEP by 2017.” STEP 2015 saw over 2,000 attendees, three themed stages and more than 70 thought leaders covering over 15 of technology’s hottest topics. Now in its fourth year, STEP has grown beyond all expectations since the first conference in 2012. It also saw the public debut of the world’s third-most expensive car — the incredible $3.4million Lykan

Hypersport, designed and built in Dubai by creator Ralph Debbas, and made famous in the Vin Diesel Movie, Furious 7. STEP 2015 boasted an unrivalled collection of the biggest movers and shakers in Middle Eastern technology ever gathered under one roof. Keynote speeches from globally acclaimed digital and social media gurus, including Jeremiah Owyang, Dave McClure and Mike Butcher, were massively well received by an eager crowd. The huge event also had three dedicated stages: the main stage, featuring digital gurus and the region's most successful startups; the BMW Stage, which hosted Design Track, BMW ConnectedDrive and Gaming Track; and Workshops, where a raft of experts in their fields gave engaging and inspirational workshop talks surrounding specific topics and issues. STEP also saw BMW reveal its unique tie-up with the Dubai police via its ConnectedDrive SOS button, and saw Pepsi use drones to deliver chilled cans of the famous soft drink to attendees.

Intern Note by Sofia Ouenniche

Need work experience? Intern for one8one and have fun! Make an appointment by sending an email to mysay@one8one.com

I did a two-week internship at one8one magazine and have learnt a lot about how a magazine is put together. It is especially great to see a few of my pieces getting published within the magazine and I've definitely got the bug to write more often. I loved working with creative, dedicated people in the office and have enjoyed watching photo-shoots and the design work that goes into the magazine each month. The staff have taught me what types of articles and what picture resolutions go into a magazine and have inspired me to follow a career in publishing. I have also learnt how to edit other people’s work when conducting interviews. It has been such a positive, enjoyable experience and I have had so much fun. Thanks, one8one!

Food Blogger

Foodie 'n' Fabulous by Sofia Ouenniche

Rupal was born and raised in Goa, India. She has been living in the UAE for the last six years now. She is a marketing manager by profession in the consumer goods industry, and she loves to travel all over the world because there’s no better way to truly experiment with food and flavours than to be on the road. Rupal grew up in a home where conversations happened around the dining table and thats where it all began for her. She truly believes that food transcends cultures and connects people in a magical way, which is one of the reasons why she started a food blog. Our team had the opportunity to speak with Rupal and learn more about what makes her tick. Why did you start a food blog? If I eat something memorable — whether I cook it myself at home or find it in a restaurant here in the UAE or on our travels — I can’t wait to share it. Hence the birth of my food blog. I’m no critic, far from it, but I do have a strong sense of flavours and ingredients, which, when combined with a keen eye for presentation, aesthetics and detail, ends up with a pretty decent end-result. Within the blog I also like to do restaurant reviews, so it could vary from street food to fancy and everything in between. There’s great joy in sharing unique finds when travelling the world so others who travel too can try something out of the ordinary. I only write about memorable food experiences and give an honest personal opinion about it on the blog. What is your favourite dish to make? Having grown up in Goa, where seafood is a staple, I love most cuisines that have an array of seafood specialties. Ever so often, I try to incorporate more than just cooking Goan food into our routine dinner. I look for different uses and proportions of similar spices, changing the influences and treatment of the food in different regions and cuisines. Spicy, slow-cooked curries, a really good Biryani, and tossing up a bowl of noodles are some of my favourite things to make. Why do you like cooking? After moving to the UAE, I began recreating Mom's traditional Goan recipes, giving them my own twist and cooking my way through my perennially expanding collection of cookbooks. I love creating something from scratch and making it taste good for our family and friends. The whole experience to me is both rewarding and relaxing after I'm back home from work. What recipes would you recommend young adults to make? Everyone is super busy in Dubai, but that’s no excuse for not cooking from scratch. If you stock your pantry well and shop for local seasonal produce once a week, you can pretty much make something flavourful and nutritious every day. Sandwiches and salads are great for lunches on the move.

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

Prawn Ghee Roast

Ingredients: All-purpose flour — 1 cup Hershey’s unsweetened cocoa powder — 1/2 cup Caster sugar — 3/4 cup Baking powder — 1 tsp Powdered fine white sugar — 1/2 cup Salt — 1/4 tsp Vanilla essence — 1 tsp Eggs — 2 Vegetable oil — 1/4 cup

Ingredients: Prawns — 500g Onion — 1 ( large, finely chopped) Green chillies — 2 (slit lengthwise) Curry leaves — 15 (3 sprigs) Chilli powder — 1.5tsp Turmeric powder — 1tsp Coriander powder — 1/2 tsp Ginger garlic paste — 2 tsp Lemon juice — 3 tsp Ghee (clarified butter) — 1 tbsp Sugar — 1tsp Salt — to taste

Method: Step 1: Combine all the dry ingredients — flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt — in a mixing bowl. Step 2: In a separate bowl, whisk together the caster sugar, eggs, oil and vanilla essence. Step 3: Combine the wet and dry ingredients and mix until combined well. Step 4: Refrigerate the dough for at least 2-3 hours (you can even let it rest overnight in the fridge for best results) in a plastic wrap. Step 5: Preheat the oven to 175C, and line the baking tray with parchment paper. Step 6: Pour the powdered white sugar in a bowl. Step 7: Grease your palm with a little vegetable oil and then roll the dough into 1-inch balls and coat generously with the powdered sugar. Step 8: Place on baking tray and ensure all cookie balls are separated by at least 2 inches to leave room for them to expand. Step 9: Bake for 10-12 minutes and let them cool.

Method: Step 1: Marinate the cleaned prawns with salt, lemon juice, ginger-garlic paste, chilli, turmeric and coriander powder and let it rest for 20mins. Step 2: In a pan, heat oil, add the curry leaves and let them splutter. Step 3: Add the finely chopped onion and fry until softened slightly, throw in the prawns. Step 4: When they are done half way, add sugar and adjust salt as per taste. Since they were marinated with lemon juice, the prawns will cook quickly. Step 6: When done, turn off the heat and serve with bread or rice.

Interview with Ava Hashemi by

Olga Lobanova

Ava Hashemi started her line, Hâshé, at the age of 19 in June, 2010. Initially carrying custom-made clutches, the label has expanded to include women’s wear and most recently hats. Hâshé’s high-end, ready-to-wear apparel line exhibits a modern spin on old-world elegance. Additionally, Hâshé’s hand-made clutches each possesses their own unique geometric shape and design with stones, studs, and vintage brooches. Our team had the opportunity to speak with Hashemi herself and learn more about her latest collection. On your website, you've said, “Elegance is the single most stylish and affordable item found in a woman’s closet; it fits all shapes and never gets outdated.” What would be your advice for girls whose wardrobes are full of ripped jeans, crop tops and gladiator sandals? How can they add elegance to their edgy style? For me, gladiator sandals or stop tops aren’t the opposite of elegance. When I say elegance, I don't necessarily mean the latest, or being fashion forward; I just mean the way a woman presents herself and, I guess, the confidence with which she walks into a room. Confidence and comfort are also important things to keep in mind, when you want to buy an outfit or when you want to dress yourself. When you are confident, you automatically present yourself in a way that could be called elegant as well. You started your fashion career when you were 19. When did you realise that fashion design was the right job for you? My major wasn't in fashion and I started taking part-time courses in a fashion school while I was studying at university. At that time I thought it would just be a part-time thing, like a fun hobby, but later on I realised that I really enjoyed it. My instructors at the fashion school were very supportive of me pursuing this as a fulltime career. So I made a collection when I was a student, and that collection won an award for the best upcoming designer in New England. So I think that gave me a boost of confidence to begin a full-time career as a fashion designer. Can you describe your new collection in just three words? Minimalist, bold and modern. How do you think the collection will be received by the existing Hâshé fans and customers? We showed the new collection in Paris and I do have a sort-of idea. So far it has received very positive feedback. In your new collection, a few outfits are embroidered with the flying bird motif? Where did the birds come from? It came naturally as a source of inspiration for me. I find the migration of birds to be very significant and beautiful. It ties in to the whole concept of the collection, with the name "Silence", as the whole process takes place in silence. Who is your ultimate female inspiration? This is tough. I would probably say Farah Diba; she is the former queen of Iran and I think she is the definition of elegance. I have a lot of respect for her as a person.

And alongside this I also started my own company by the name Inside Dubai, which started as a business page on VK, where I launched more than 20 new services including tourist visa, property rentals and buyouts, rent-a-cars, rent-a-yachts, and private jets. Anyone can come onto the website and purchase the service online itself. What motivated you to start this business? As I mentioned earlier, I started posting on a very popular Russian website by the name VK, which is exactly like Facebook. It was literally copy-pasted from the English version into that of Russian text. Within the website, I created a small page with all the services that we have on the website. Initially we shared and posted within our immediate family and friends circle and then the page grew to around 5,000 followers. I still remember how one year it brought us a lot of money and at that time it was like my hobby. The people found it easy to find all the services on the page itself, so whether they wanted a visa, short-term property rentals, or to book yachts for the weekend, everything was linked on the site. After doing this for a while, I decided to create my own website that is more professional, with exactly the same services to help people that still needed them.

"When i was 20 years old i started my first business, which was a computer repair shop."

How does the company work since you have so many different services? Let’s start with real estate. We have very well established contacts with investors from Russia, and we also work very closely with the real estate agents in Dubai. A couple of years ago, when I was a real estate consultant in Dubai, one of my friends, Shuana, started her own company by the name of Kingdom Key. I joined her along with established contacts and investors I knew. With time, dedication and hard work, the company made good deals as our investors started to invest in real estate through us. We have a lot of property listed with our company and we are responsible for handling its sale and rental for our investors and we are growing at a very rapid pace. Recently, about one-and-a-half years ago, we opened a new office in Turkey, and about a year ago, we opened another office in Moscow. Real estate is one business which requires a lot of patience, as sometimes you don't make any money for six months, and then on the seventh month you could bring in a commissions in millions. We have assigned prime locations to our employees who represent their designated areas and also they work closely with each other as well as real estate agents in the market and that is how they take care of the sales. Now let’s talk about Inside Dubai, which I initiated with help of my partner, Oleksandr Balanntsa. In terms of the luxury products and services, we have contacts and associations with top companies in the UAE, which I made possible by meeting their owners personally and getting the best corporate rates for their services. And that is how I enabled my website to offer the cheapest rates as compared to the market. This is the main source of attracting new clients and improving relations with existing clients. What is your daily routine? My day differs from day to day, since there are a lot of a different services that we offer, so I have a lot of meetings planned for each day. However my day has to start with coffee! Inside Dubai deals very closely with other Russian companies, tourists, based in Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Russia. The company has offices in Dubai, Turkey, Moscow, and soon we are opening up in Saint Petersburg as well, so there are a lot of meetings and plans for each location, so I am always busy working on the next thing. Whenever I get free time, I love to spend time with my wife, Victoria, and my beloved son, David, who are most important parts of my life.

How do you convince people to invest their money with you? For me it was a bit of an issue a couple of years ago, when I was around 20 to 21 years old, as people would always think of me as a young person. It was hard to persuade people to invest even small amounts. It has taken a long time to build this trust, communication and rapport, it was not always easy. It was important to maintain good relationships with people, especially when you are in your bad times as it builds your reputation. What challenges did you face? I think it has always been a little hard to instill trust within people, as they would always tell me that I have smart ideas but they didn't want to build partnerships and work with me. Most of the people used to give me false promises and cheat me, but with hard work and determination I have overcome these issues. I still remember, five years ago when I first came to Dubai and was working in the real estate business and I was renting out properties in Jumeriah Lake Towers (JLT). The biggest issue I had faced then was I didn't speak a word of English. Even then I managed to rent around two to three properties and sell one property. At the time I only knew one phrase in English, which was “I need to deposit the agency fee”. How do you make decisions? I think that, through time and experience, I am able to analyse the market and tell what will work and what will not. I take my time to read the reports, speak to a few trusted people within the industry, and run some reports of my own. Tell us a fun fact about yourself? When I was 20 years old, I started my first business, which was a computer repair shop. In my town, we didn't have any computer servicing shops, so I came up with an idea to provide the service at the client’s doorstep, where we would come to their house for an hour and fix their computer or laptop. What I realised is that people didn't know how to reboot their system, fix viruses and bugs, so it was the perfect business. I had hired around 10 to 15 people and the business brought in around $150,00 for a month, it had worked really well for us. What do you do for fun? In my spare time I like to practice Judo and Sambo. I also play football and any other sport that is of interest to me. On weekends I also like to go to the park with friends to BBQ. Most of my weekends I try and do a lot of different things such as play volleyball, swim and gym. Do you have any advice for people who want to start something of their own? I would only say not to be afraid of failure and making bad decisions, since a lot of people have regrets about not starting something that they think is a good idea. So if you have a good idea, make sure to at least try and achieve it. It is okay to fail, but don't have regrets as it doesn't feel very good.

Shama Hyder

Staying one step ahead of the industry by

Violet Sanchez

Shama Hyder graduated high school from a special program called the Academy of Media Arts and Technology, which allowed her to develop her passion for technology and creativity. She then went on to study at the University of Texas at Austin, where she received her bachelors degree in corporate communications, and a masters degree in organisational communication and technology. Through her passion for technology and communication she started her own company, The Marketing Zen Group, which is an integrated online marketing and digital PR firm. Hyder is also the best-selling author of a book named The Zen of Social Media Marketing, which is quite popular within the industry. Our team had the opportunity to speak with Hyder and learn more about her. Can you tell us something about your book, The Zen of Social Media Marketing? I initially wrote The Zen of Social Media Marketing when most people didn’t even know what Twitter was, and I never expected that I’d be working on its fourth edition one day. The book was a response to the hundreds of emails I was getting at the time with questions about how social media marketing worked. There wasn’t enough time in the day to respond to all of them, and there wasn’t a ready-to-go resource I could direct people to, so I decided to create the resource. It was written as a primer for people wanting to understand social media marketing, and how it fits into the bigger world of marketing. Originally, I self-published it as an eBook, but it was picked up right away by a publisher, and turned into a print copy for book stores. After which it quickly became one of the best-selling books in its category.

"the book was written as a primer for people wanting to understand social media marketing."

Do you face any struggles in achieving your dreams? What’s the scariest thing about them? I think the most important thing to realise is that perfection is the enemy of progress. The everyday struggles should be the joy. The pursuit should be the thrill. While the “dream” may be important, it is equally, if not even more important, to enjoy the process of getting there. I’ve never believed in sacrificing happiness along the way so some day you can achieve something which you think will make you happy. No-one knows what tomorrow holds. I do believe our journey should be the part we truly relish. What three daily things can you not live without? My smartphone — I can (and have) literally sometimes run my company from it. My Kindle — I am an avid reader, so I can not live without it. My passport — I travel too much to go without it. Who is your mentor? I have many people I respect as mentors for various reasons. Some I admire due to their contribution to their given field, and others I look up to exemplify certain values I wish to foster in my own life. I believe everyone has something you can learn from, and seeking out a “mentor” in the traditional sense often feels artificial. In life, we run into people who are rooting for our success — teachers, bosses, etc. — it is important to cultivate organic mentor relationships. Any advice to the youth? Follow your passion and work hard at it. Don’t expect anything to be handed to you. Be grateful for whatever experiences life throws your way, and take full advantage of any opportunity presented to you. Don’t compare yourself to others. Your life path will be distinct and custom to the lessons you need to learn. Most importantly, always be kind — to yourself and others. Life is too short to be any other way.

Motorsport Legends by Miral Bushnaq

Legends in any sport are usually revered and looked upon for inspiration for they are not made in a day. It takes a lifetime of achievements and unrelenting determination to gain that height. In motorsports too, legends are always there to instill inspiration in young drivers who dream of becoming Schumacher or Fangio one day. Here is our list of some of the best motorsport legends.

Ayrton Senna a.k.a “Magic Senna” 1960 — 1994 Brazil

“Because in a split second, it’s gone.”

Three-time F1 World Champion Ayrton Senna gave birth to his legacy at the age of four, when his father bought him his first go-kart. By 1984, Senna was racing under Toleman-Hart, where he made his debut, and later on moved to LotusRenault, where he won six Grands Prix. He then moved to McLaren-Honda, where he won his first World Championship and eventually ended up with Williams- Renault. His life was claimed when technical difficulties got the best of him and his car crashed into a barrier during the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy, in 1994. Facts Senna won World Championships in the years of 1988, 1990 and 1991; as well as 41 wins and 80 podiums. He held the record for most pole positions from 1989 to 2006.

Niki Lauda a.k.a “King Rat” 1949 — Present Austria

"There are more important things in life than the world championship, like staying alive."

Three-time F1 World Champion Niki Lauda was said to have a natural love for automobiles that rooted back to him exploring the suburbs of Austria in his 1949 Volkswagen Beetle. After participating in his first race, which resulted in second place, his family rejected the thought of him becoming who he is today. After working his way up in the stages of Formula racing, Lauda joined Ferrari’s Formula 1 team in 1974, when the famous rivalry between him and James Hunt began. The tragedy of the season was Lauda’s crash at the infamous Nurburgring track during the 1976 German Grand Prix, where his car went diving into the barriers and caught on fire, leaving him trapped. After suffering severe burns and damaged lungs, retirement was in question. Nevertheless, six weeks later, Niki Lauda was back in the seat going head-to-head with James Hunt for the final race of the season. Facts Niki Lauda is the only man to win a race in an F1 car fitted with a fan to generate downforce. He has 25 wins, 54 podiums, 24 pole positions and 24 fastest laps.

Michèle Mouton a.k.a “der schwarze Vulkan” (The Black Volcano) 1951 — Present France

“Once I had a goal, I never gave up.”

Quoted as the fastest girl on earth, Michèle Mouton had a history of driving and a love for cars from the age of 14. At 22, a friend of hers asked her to be co-driver for a rally in France, which soon escalated into her father pushing her to become the well-known rally driver of her day. She joined Fiat in 1977 to partner with JeanClaude Andruet, who is himself a well-known French professional rally driver who competed in the World Rally Championship. After becoming familiar with the ways of rally driving, Mouton was contacted by Audi in 1980, and they signed her for a World Rally Championship for the next coming year, which turned into a first win for a female in the rally world. To quote the words of Mouton, “I remember not just because it was a win, but also because it was a big fight right into the last night.” Facts She believes that her background in dancing actually helped her rally in the 1970s and 1980s, comparing her car moving on gravel with that of a dancer’s moves. Mouton has said that she never went into rallies trying to beat men. She simply wanted to compete at their level and not come off as looking ridiculous.

Sébastien Loeb a.k.a “E.T.” 1974 — Present France

“To be honest, it didn't matter if I was first, second or third in this rally — I just wanted to win the championship.”

Best known for being the most successful driver in the World Rally Championship, Sébastien Loeb was formerly a gymnast who gave it up in 1995 to become what he is today. His journey grew with Citroën, leading to nine World Championships between the years of 2004 and 2012. Alongside his rally career, Loeb was also a three-time winner at the Race of Champions in 2003, 2005 and 2008, and he also took second place in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As the helmet of many race drivers, this world champion has a comic drawn — together with his sponsor’s logos — of his best friend's work, which he supposes gives him luck. Facts When asked if he had any regrets, Loeb responded with, “No, I don’t have any regrets after winning nine world titles.” Loeb once worked as an electrician while he was doing gymnastics.

Exploring Ubud by

Soumya Balakrishnan

Travel

Last month, Soumya Balakrishnan wrote about traveling all over Bali to small cities like Kuta. This month, she talks more about exploring the serene town of Ubud, which is a sharp contrast to the likes of Kuta. The town Ubud is built around Puri Saren Palace. Down winding alleys, there are tourist traps selling everything from South American dream catchers to Kashmiri pashminas, Indonesian batiks, masks and hanging monkeys. Balinese-style architecture, wood carvings and detailed motifs define this complex palace. After we explored the palace, we set off to travel through the surrounding areas. One of these alleyways was said to lead to the rice terrace. The next turn lead straight to Pura Taman Saraswati, a temple dedicated to the goddess of wisdom, and we hadn’t seen anything quite as magnificent as that. The towering stone structure stood amidst a water garden in which lotus flowers bloomed in abundance. Temples in Bali are open to visitors, provided they follow some basic etiquette, and this elusive one is rarely mentioned on the Ubud travel map. One of the pamphlets I had picked earlier at the airport promised a car and an English speaking guide for $40. A small price to pay for a day of air-conditioned luxury. Our guide arrived on the dot at 9.30 in the morning and once we were seated in the car, apologised for his poor

49

command over English. We should have known that the deal was too good to be true, but because it was too late to make alternative plans, we decided to go ahead with it. If there is one thing we were impressed about with the Balinese, it would have to be their resourcefulness. Even though our guide’s English could use a lot of work, he was tech-savvy and had a smartphone with Google translate. The constant translation back and forth definitely made our trip fun and interesting. It was a scenic ride towards Bedugul in the central highlands of Bali, up the winding roads, past the rice and maize fields, banana and strawberry plantations and orange farms. Lake Bratan is at an altitude of 700 metres, and is surrounded by blue-green mountains on three sides. There is a chill in the air, the waves sing a genteel, lapping lullaby and mist hangs so low that you can almost touch it. A small portion of the Ulun Danu Temple complex juts into this lake, creating one of Bali’s iconic images. There is of course more to this island than just the temples, Ubud is where Elizabeth Gilbert based the Indonesian part of her novel Eat, Pray, Love. This town was always known for its medicinal healing. Food lovers, on the other hand, are drawn here by the burst of flavours in every mouthful. And to an adventure junkie, this is paradise.

Poem

Changes Never Change by Catharine Joseph

Something I always wished in life, Was a change to forget the strife. Something I always cherished to ponder Was a change to realise the wonder… In which I saw many of my kind Who struggle to change in ways they find But I never know why I face The touch of a change upon what I gaze. And lies the reason that makes me wail Upon the unchanged people I trusted but I fail. For they changed in no time, unimaginably Unlike, untenable…. Yet I stood unchanged willingly. Those who merry with me, turned their necks While those against, changed on spec. Yet, with all these wide, I am serene And never did I bother or act mean With a glimpse of moment, people change again And there you find yourself, confused with pain. No matter what, they taught me the genuine I, for the same chord, still remain sanguine While the saga moves untimely One has to learn the changes infallibly. So this is what I love to rhyme That man changes faster than time… Yet it’s unbearable when you are forced to urge Because I learnt that changes never change.

A Floating Water Park in the Middle of the Beach by

Somewhere between cannon-balling into the water and bouncing off a trampoline on the sea, you find yourself wondering if you’re having way more fun than the group of kids waiting for you to move on to the next obstacle. We are talking about the new water park that’s come afloat on Jumeirah Beach. The park is quite literally a massive bouncy castle racecourse placed in the middle of the beach. The giant yellow-green structure invites both adults and children. Located at The Beach opposite JBR, the park offers various challenging attractions such as water slides, trampolines, jumping cushions and climbing walls. The idea of the game is to pass through the course, falling as many times as possible into the sea! The best thing is you don’t even need to be a pro swimmer to be a part of this crazy sport. Every person is provided with a life jacket, and may

Naqiyah Mustafa

we say this makes things so much easier. Every time you fall, all you need to do is bob around for a while until you feel like ascending back into the mayhem of the race course. The course is made up of different obstacles, ropes to climb on, and trampolines to jump over. We were not a group with a high level of stamina but most people couldn’t last longer than an hour in this course of madness. It is an adventure playground, in the middle of the ocean. It would make a great place to hang out with friends in the summer. They only charge Dh60 per hour, which makes it fun, affordable and crazy. Location: Arabian Water Park at The Beach, JBR Timing: Open daily 8am-noon, 3pm-7pm Prices: AED 60 per adult | AED 195 for a day pass. Contact: 04 388 3223

Splash enters a

Fashion

'Brave New World' by samantha george

It’s a natural desire for the human soul to return to the basic simplicity of life to attain bliss, yet stay connected to a world that that has evolved exponentially. Splash has explored a new dimension of the world by paying homage to simplicity and infusing the luxury of fashion that surrounds us. ‘Brave New World’ showcased the Spring Summer '15 collection that urged us to go back to where it all started. While we move towards getting into the Zen mode, we are also incorporating the city landscape and lifestyle into the larger picture. Splash presented pieces that were an amalgamation of the luxe fabrics in simple, basic silhouettes. The season’s hottest trends were interpreted in a way that appeared almost close to nature at an elevated level. The collection will have a strong Far East exotic Japanese influence with a good mix of classic and new silhouettes. Simplicity and clean lines will be the highlight sending out a demure vibe.

Women's Collection A mix of fabrics and textures that stimulate paper, jute and fibre. Flowly silhouettes add to the free-flowing spirit being captured in the collection. Within the collection there is a strong presence of prints, which are both tropical and florals. Colours range from cotton white and classic neutrals with an injection of bright colours and black-and-grey accents to highlight the look. The colleciton features suede fringes in a big way, bringing back the retro trend with a healthy dose of florals. There are paisley dresses, tan suede, and tassels can be seen on key pieces. The trend will see colours like white, tan, yellow, orange and off-whites.

'Brave New World' by samantha george

Capture the mysterious, free-spirited bohemian and gypsy culture with this trend that takes you on a whimsical ride this season.

The boho trend lends itself a very rockstar feel with details and flowing layers. Meanwhile, there are earthy tones with a modern monk influence in the cuts and styles.

Men's Collection Prints are big in the collection, with an infusion of solid colours to break the layering and prints

Silhouettes are minimalistic with sleeveless long length shirts and tees being the key items in the line, with mandarin collars making an appearance.

There's a layering of lightweight fabrics in different patterns. Fresh burst of colors are present, with amber, rose tan, apricot buff, with blue and black accents

Colours in the collection range from new wheat, neutral grey and sleet/stone. And a sporty influence can be expected with joggers.

Event Poem

Fragile Hearts Last night I heard you whispering to the stars You told them you were a husk of a person, an empty eggshell so fragile, so blank. You tied your secrets to blazing balls of dust and whispered wind between the flames Darling, inside of the husk there is so much fruit you are an eggshell; a vessel carry the soul inside you with pride. The stars are long dead Yet they shine on.

Astrology

Taurus 19 April — 20 May Known for being reliable, practical and ambitious, the people born under the Zodiac sign Taurus have an eye for beauty. They tend to be good with finances, and hence make efficient financial managers. The Taurus will readily lend a helping hand to the family, friends and the needy, even if it means that they would have to endure hardship or loss. Although easygoing and respectful, the Taurus can be unbelievably stubborn and inflexible in their approach. So much so that when the logical arguments don’t suit them, they will just refuse to listen!

It’s time to take charge of your life in a brave and powerful way. Do not take no for an answer. In other words, don’t take fear as an answer. As it isn’t the answer. Though it will still be present, take active steps anyway. You are more powerful than the dark clouds and doubts. There are some very important moments coming as you embrace your power more fully. Nourishment and support are yours. Play big or go home.

A new sense of stability and support arrives for you in the coming cycle — from the inside out. Notice what changes and releases have to happen in order for this new, inner structure to take form. Continue to courageously and creatively face your feelings and emotions as this is the territory that impedes the nourishment you desperately need and want. Your emotions will give you the clues. Dive in!

The coming cycle helps you finally release and let go of some professional pieces that have been holding you back. Trust this cycle of letting go as it affords you the space that you need to step forward in some very momentous and powerful ways. The endings will be vital for the gains to come. Be sure to speak from your heart — doing this will help you to find stability, balance and peace.

Gains arrive as you submit to inner ego-based change. As you do so, life opens up and reminds you how important it is to allow change and transformation into your life. Use your challenges and awakenings as a gift to share with others. Let the world into your process of enlightenment and upliftment. Show us a bit of your inner realms and vulnerability.

With all the deep transformations you’ve been undergoing, the coming cycle will bring some muchneeded reassurance. More nourishment, support and wisdom are on the way. Give yourself some rest time as this will be how you digest and assimilate the past weeks and months of change. Use the influences of joy and seriousness, fun and commitment.

With all the difficulties coming to a close end, the relief is yet to be expected. But this part of your process has been vital, as it will mean that you are now better prepared to embrace the power that is arriving. Get ready to recharge, to cleanse and transform, from the inside out. As the wave of change arrives, be sure to gather your support and your fire offerings.

You are currently working through some old pain and disappointments right now. The support and stability can be found with your family and friends, so don’t neglect this source of power and strength. Allow the universe to help bring passion into your life and share it consciously with others. With so much energy moving through you, use this time as an opportunity to learn how to be more mindful.

Pay attention to what the universe is telling you through messages that will come by you in new ways. Recommit to your power and your hobbies, and channel this strength into your clients and through your gifts and services. There’s nothing that you can’t accomplish this month, so don’t let the shadows keep you from moving forward. See and be seen this month.

A new sense of balance is coming your way, which offers some healing and support. Use your passion constructively. Now is a great time to start anew. Listen to your gut.

The only way through this difficult time is with courage and creativity. As your self-esteem and sense of self get restructured, be sure to take notes. Work out what gives you your ability, your will and desire to move forward. Channel the passion effectively, and keep moving forward as that will be the only way to express yourself this month.

Do what you say and say what you do. Do what you feel and feel what you do. Be courageous enough to be authentic and you can’t go wrong. Your courage and passion to do so increases in the coming weeks, but it’s important to watch the doubts that appear. Work consciously on these old issues as they have stopped you from achieving your greatness in the past.

This is a hard month for you as you feel like you are being stretched thin with the world's expectations. There’s more change on the way — but the kind that will support some integration and greater stability. Using your voice will be vital in order for you to get your needs met. Getting what you need requires that you know what you need, and then you can ask for it.

NYUAD Announces Recipients of 2015 Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarship for Outstanding High School Students Thirty-four high-achieving secondary school students have been selected to participate in the NYU Abu Dhabi Summer Academy, a rigorous, 18-month enrichment program, as recipients of the 2015 Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarship for Outstanding High School Students. Now in its fifth year, the program offers an immersive educational experience that prepares Abu Dhabi-based Emirati students for entry into top-tier English-language universities throughout the world, including NYU Abu Dhabi. The program curriculum focuses on the development of critical thinking, writing, and discussion in English; quantitative reasoning; standardised test preparation; public speaking; and leadership. Taking place during the two summers following the tenth and eleventh grades, and including three semesters of online and in-person instruction throughout the academic year, the Summer Academy introduces students to the academic standards, norms, and values appropriate to the culture of leading international higher education institutions, in addition to providing college admission counselling. This comprehensive educational experience is supported both in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities at NYUAD, NYU New York, and NYU Florence. Check out the names of the recipients on our website.

International Students Unveil Innovative Mobile and Web Applications at NYUAD A wearable device to monitor construction worker health was ranked first at NYU Abu Dhabi’s fourth annual International Hackathon for Social Good in the Arab World on Sunday. The winning idea, called Hackee.me, can produce reports of worker health conditions for governments, and warn workers if they're getting dehydrated. Hackee.me was developed by a team of local and international students. Hosted by the NYUAD Institute, the annual International Hackathon brought together students from around the world to work closely with mentors and develop mobile and web applications for social good in the Arab world. Translate Tube, a crowd-sourced, voice-over translation service for existing video content, was ranked second. Meanwhile, EcoEco, an open-world Farmville-like game where resources can only be earned through doing real-life environmental activities, came third.

The Changing Face of Middle East Studies The American University in Dubai (AUD) and the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) hosted their first collaborative conference on Middle East Studies, which came to a successful close after a series of panels and highly anticipated keynote speakers, including Dr. Joseph Massad, Columbia University Professor, renowned speaker and expert on Middle East issues, and Dr. Gary Bunt, University of Wales, a specialist on Islam and the Internet. Many papers presented new ways to study the changing 'landscapes' and 'knowledgescapes' of 'Middle East Studies' — multiple scholars already have discarded the 'Middle East' label, replacing it with a more geographically correct West Asia and North Africa (WANA). The conference was a resounding success on all levels: over 110 participants from various locales (Europe, North America, North Africa, West and Southeast Asia) attended the panel presentations, engaged in intellectual dialogues with speakers and other delegates, and participated in the conference’s dinners and cultural activities.
