Editor's Letter
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment of all.
BHARGAVI NAGRECHA Acting Editor (editor@one8one.net)
With this thought in mind, we would love to introduce you to Asma Al Shamsi, a talented Emirati Puppeteer who plays the role of Shams on the popular childrens show, Iftah Ya SimSim, which is the Arabic version of Sesame Street. We had the chance to interview Al Shamsi and see how she got into puppeteering, what inspires her and what advice she has for you. We truly had such an amazing time with this month's content as there is such a variety of topic that are so interesting. Another must read is an exclusive interview of a student at Murdoch University who was in Nepal when the earthquake had just taken place. Read about how he, his group and the people of Nepal dealt with this tragedy. On a lighter note we do hope that you have a great summer and don't forget to check out our website for the latest updates. Also make sure to send us your articles, poems, photographs, short stories or anything else that inspires you. Happy Holidays! =)

Albums
Marina and the Diamonds Froot Welsh pop artist Marina Diamandis' third album is her most revealing and sure-footed yet. Through her latest album, Froot, she comes across as more mature and sincere than how she had appeared previously. We do like that Marina ditched the K-pop twists and glittery hearts in favour of heartfelt songs that she writes herself. Unfortunately the album is loose around the edges, and can be quite boring as it attempts to take influences from over the place — from intense outpours to cheeky pop. Overall the album is average, with many of the songs struggling to break free from the general mediocrity.
Mumford & Sons Wilder Mind Mumford & Sons are the leaders of the revival folk music but through their latest album we see a new rock influence. While the first single, Believe, seems to mimic Coldplay’s genre of music, the album’s remaining 11 tracks adhere more to The National’s tightly wound brooding, and with good reason. Many of the songs on Wilder Mind came to life in the Brooklyn studio of National maverick Aaron Dessner. Meanwhile, the title track so effortlessly meshes with The National’s academic aesthetic that it’s jarring to be greeted by Mumford’s soulful purr instead of Matt Berninger’s willful baritone after the first few bars. Mumford built his reputation on his ability to cast his voice out to the farthest reaches of venues in a way that conveyed every ache, disappointment, and tattered dream without losing velocity. Even the band’s overly sentimental and clunky lyrics found grace in his boisterous, vein-popping, all-or-nothing delivery. Wilder Mind contains those anthemic touchstones most readily on Just Smoke and the razor-edged The Wolf.

Avengers: Age of Ultron One of the most awaited movie of the year, Avengers: Age of Ultron is one of the most thrilling and entertaining Marvel movies. When director Joss Whedon made the first Avengers movie, it seemed impossible to bring together all the popular Marvel superheroes. But Whedon produced an epic blockbuster with millions of fans, setting high expectations for this year's film. The latest addition introduces new characters such as Ultron, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and the Vision. We enjoyed watching the pair of suspicious super-powered twins, Pieto and Wanda Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. In addition, the dialogue is sharp and the actors’ performances remarkable. The dynamic relationship change between Black Widow and the Hulk is surprising and Hawkeye’s secret is heartwarming as well. The only drawback is that the movie is reasonably long at two hours and 21 minutes. Overall, Avengers: Age of Ultron provides the perfect blend of action, comedy and great special effects, though the ending isn't greatly satisfying. Whedon takes a few too many risks but despite that, the film was always on course to become another financial blockbuster.
Pitch Perfect 2 Pitch Perfect 2 crushed the box office this weekend, and we wouldn't be surprised if some people saw the movie more than once. The original film was a surprise hit, so it was already obvious that the sequel would be good, thanks in no small part to the trailers. This time around, there's definitely more music, cool new characters, and tons of perfect Fat Amy moments. The highlight of the soundtrack is the original tune, Flashlight. It was orginally written by Sia and Sam Smith and sung by Jessie J, but in the movie, it's a song that the main characters come up with. The song is sung in various forms, and we loved every second of it — from Emily's stripped-down version to the way it's incorporated into the Bellas' final performance. Cups was the breakout hit from Pitch Perfect, and it's fitting that the sequel incorporates a throwback to the song during a campfire sequence. It takes on a completely different meaning now that the girls are about to graduate, and it is sung beautifully. Overall Pitch Perfect 2 is a totally goofy but pretty sweet movie.

Comicave is 17,000 square feet of high-end collectables, novelty items, pop-culture merchandise, and apparel, and it stocks more than 5,000 comic books and manga titles. This magnificent store is part of the Dubai Outlet Mall, and is split into several different areas, such as the sci-fi area; the Ataku area, which stores the Manga and Anime figurines; the comic book aisle, which is inspired by the Manhattan skyline; and the Marvel area. The store also has several life-size statues of popular characters such as Batman, Iron Man and The Hulk. There is also a featured Memorabilia section located in its centre. Comicave is the official distributor of over 35 well-known manufacturers and brands of comic and manga-related items. In the near future, it will open a cafĂŠ and organise different events so that it becomes more of a pop culture destination within the region. The entire store has something for everyone and can definitely manage to attract crowds of varying age and interest, bringing them to a whole new world which was previously unavailable.
"due to their scarcity, the value of these items go up in time like works of art" “The Vault is also a cool spot that will soon introduce a number of events including cosplay, gaming tournaments, model kit competitions, screenings, workshops, and lectures. We love the attention to detail and quality of high-end collectibles, sculptures, action figures, prop replicas and memorabilia. Some of the collectables are even authenticated with certificates issued by the manufacturers, and due to their scarcity, the value of these items go up in time like works of art. Overall we love the Comicave and would highly urge comic fans to check it out.

Inspiration
Women in Engineering by Sofia Ouenniche
The number of women studying engineering at UAE colleges and universities has been steadily increasing over the past 10 years, and female engineers are graduating in higher numbers than men. However, engineering is still widely considered a male-dominated career. Recently we spoke to four successful female engineers, who are all currently working at Cummins Middle East, about their experiences in the field. This is what they had to say:
Despite their strong interest in the field of engineering, the women still faced some challenges when studying. Shanila, who confesses that getting her degree in engineering was one of her biggest achievements told us, “There were only two female engineering students including myself in a class bigger than 50 students. Sometimes we were not taken seriously and as a result we would have a hard time finding a partner for a project.”
When asked what subjects they studied, Shanila, who graduated as an electrical engineer, explained, “There was a heavy emphasis on maths, physics, circuits, signals and systems, and computer programming.”
Nevertheless, she believes that she has come this far in her career due to her technical background. Parinita also struggled to move beyond the stereotypes of a small town and faced stiff competition for entrance into a renowned engineering institution. This forced her to work twice as hard to get one of the limited university spots.
Parinita, who graduated in 2006, told us that alongside the core subjects of maths, physics, chemistry and computer science, she "also did science projects in her free time", and that carrying out these projects helped her "to develop the ability to think logically and creatively". This helped her to develop problemsolving skills, which was a selling point when she applied for engineering school in India. All the interviewees showed an interest in technology and fixing things from an early age and were greatly inspired by their families. Brittany said, “My father regularly took me to work with him to see engineers in action and took me to trade shows so I could see his high-tech world in action.”
“A woman must be motivated, passionate and opportunistic to get ahead in her career."
For other women who are interested in a career in engineering, Parinita advises, “A woman must be motivated, passionate and opportunistic to get ahead in her career. One must be able to know how to meet customers’ requirements and know how to accomplish those needs and wants. This requires women to have the courage to take criticism or negative feedback in a positive way so as to get ahead in the corporate competitive world.” We hope by reading about these inspiring women we can help and support current female engineers and university students, while encouraging the next generation of women to pursue careers in engineering.
Nepal Earthquake
News

by Ahmad Al Saidy
& Nazish Munir
The 2015 Nepal earthquake hit in the area near Barpak, a mountain village between Kathmandu and Pokhara, on 25 April and killed more than 8,000 people, injured more than 14,500, and left many more homeless with villages destroyed and historic buildings collapsed. It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since 1934. A team of students and academics from Murdoch University travelled to Kathmandu for a 125-kilometre, team-building trek to Everest Base Camp, and immediately witnessed the deadliest day and aftermath of the earthquake. Ahmad Al Saidy, a journalism student who was on the team, describes his devastating experience: Before the earthquake took place… Nepal from the airplane seemed crowded and alive. We were excited as we would spend the night in Kathmandu and have time to explore the city, meet people and try the local dishes. At the airport people were very welcoming, humble and always smiling and it made us even more enthusiastic for our two-week stay. Sadly, we were still at the airport when the earthquake struck.
"No matter how little I have, there is someone out there who has just lost everything."
We had planned… to stay the night in Kathmandu then fly to Lukla the next morning to start our trek to Mount Everest.
were living in. The neighbourhood was completely destroyed in the aftershocks. It was sad and disastrous; by then we knew we were sure that we would not be able to continue the hike.
The earthquake felt… different, I have experienced many earthquakes before but this was the first time I could literally see buildings shaking and people being terrified. It felt like a disaster was actually happening and we only knew how bad it was once it was over.
The aid provided in the aftermath of the earthquake to the people was… heartwarming. During the first few hours in Nepal, it was purely people helping each other. The Nepalese people were kind and warm, and I will definitely visit Kathmandu again soon.
When the earthquake struck… The team and I were divided into two cars. Both the cars were leaving the parking lot from the airport when the earthquake shook the cars.
A moment that symbolises the experience… came on the way to the airport. We walked by a collapsed building. I asked a man if there was anyone who died and he pointed near my foot — there was a lady covered in a white sheet.
Right after the earthquake, the condition of Nepal's people… was sad. When we drove through the streets of Kathmandu to our hotel, that’s when we realised the scope of the trauma we
After witnessing the earthquake and its aftermath… I have really learnt appreciation. No matter how little I have, there is someone out there who has just lost everything.

Musician
Carl & The Reda Mafia by bhargavi nagrecha
Imagine an Indian rock 'n' roll singer making music with an Egyptian funk and blues guitarist. Now toss in a bassist from Greece, along with an energetic drummer from Nigeria. And, of course, lets not forget the mascot, Vito the Rat. Besides the burst of culturally rich music that is being created, along with the plethora of food that’s going to be ordered, you get a music making machine that is fiercely unstoppable. In a time when funk and blues are words that rarely get tossed around, Carl & The Reda Mafia are looking to bring back the golden era of music .
"We just got signed to do our debut album, so it looks like we’ll be putting in twice as much time into it."
Tell us about yourselves. We are the new kids in town, with a rat-headed drummer. Funk jam is the genre which is basically funk with rock 'n' roll elements, and a guarantee you leave with one of our songs stuck in your head. That’s us in a nutshell. To elaborate, we are a four-piece band put together from four different countries. Carl Frenais is from India — he is the lead singer and songwriter; Tarek Reda is from Egypt, and is the lead guitarist and composer; Christos Asimakopoulos is from Greece — he is the bassist and the leader of the band; and Abimbola Durojaiye is from Nigeria, and is the drummer who also wears the rat mask representing the band's logo and mascot, Vito the Rat. We found each other in October 2014 and since then there’s been no looking back. From winning the prestigious Bandjam Battle of the Bands to our debut single, Fight For Your Queen, being chosen as the campaign song for the UN Women HeForShe campaign. We have recently signed a record deal for our debut album and management with White Cube since we got the band together. How would you describe the feel or rhythm of the music that the band plays? The genre we belong to is a fusion of funk with rock 'n' roll elements called funk jam. Today everyone turns to electronic music because of the groove and energy it provides while forgetting the roots, which is funk and rock 'n' roll. So by fusing the two and adding lyrics that appeal to our generation we think we’ve found the ultimate formula. Where did you get the inspiration for the name of the band? Back in the Motown era most of the bands had “and the” added to their names. For example, there was Somkey Robinson and the Miracles, Kool and the Gang, and Diana Ross and the Supremes. So we thought we’d bring that style back and since Carl wrote all the songs and Tarek Reda composed them, it would fit perfectly as Carl and the Reda Mafia. Were you influenced by old records and tapes? Which ones? Our influences start right from Elvis all the way to the John Mayer trio. But our major influence came from the Motown era with artists like Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, the Jackson 5, and Michael Jackson’s earlier records like Off the wall.
How often and for how long do you practice? We practice twice a week and since we’re still a new band we keep one day purely for writing new material and reworking songs that are done as well. We just got signed to do our debut album, so it looks like we’ll be putting in twice as much time into it for sure. How did it feel to compete in the Hard Rock Cafe Rising: Battle of the Bands? We were the underdogs right from the start, since our sound wasn’t even close to hard rock or rock for that matter. But we surely wanted to put on a good show and we did just that at the finals. Weirdly enough, we thought we would win based on that performance but we fell short. That being said, we had a lot of fun that night and wish the winners all the best for the online regionals. Do you have any future plans? The future is already here for us as we have an album to record with White Cube and that will require all our attention. We hope the album does well and one day we get to see bands cover our songs and people sing our songs at karaoke bars. In the future we would love to be headlined at the world’s best music festivals and shows.

Competition
Racing Through Schools by Tanish Jain
The F1 in schools (F1iS) project is probably the biggest and most successful school sports and STEM Educational Program in the world. But unfortunately it is coming to its annual finale this summer. More than 20 million students from 40 countries around the globe are involved in this worldwide project. Some of the most ingenious technologies have been discovered by youngsters during the course of the challenge. This year, three teams from the United Arab Emirates qualified for the global competition in Singapore after the stiff competition that was held at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. F1iS is supported by the Formula One community — in particular Bernie Ecclestone at FOM. And the Formula One teams welcome students in the F1 paddock and in their factories. Team Xenith Racing, a strong contender from the UAE, is one of the qualifiers at the world finals to be held alongside the Singapore Grand Prix. The team consists of six passionate and talented youngsters between the ages of 15 and 17. Run as a mini-enterprise, the team is divided into various departments, including car designing and manufacturing, finance, marketing, resource management and graphic designing, which is typical of F1 in Schools teams. Finance manager Tanish Jain says, “The F1 in Schools project is a multi-disciplinary challenge which involves a lot of components. We must deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyse, manufacture, test, and then race miniature compressed air-powered balsa wood F1 cars. Not only does this challenge inspire us to learn about designing, it also helps us to learn important business skills as the team is just like running a small business. For

instance, we need to look for sponsors to finance the team. For this, we have to talk to and meet various companies, create sponsorship proposals and presentations, and draft sponsorship contracts. Xenith has also hosted fundraiser events at the school. We also have to be constantly active on the social media platform to stay in touch with fans.” On being asked about how the F1iS journey has helped him thus far, manufacturing engineer Atree Ghosh says, “Growth is the only word I can think of in terms of what the F1 in Schools journey has done for me so far. The kind of exposure that students receive through this project is truly unmatched by any other.” “F1iS has transformed our knowledge about new technological innovations and the functioning of the business world”, adds Jain. Team management is another important aspect of the project, with each team member running different departments. The way each of these departments work together and collaborate to create the final product is largely responsible for determining the success of the team. The team has faced a tough journey, braving challenges along the way. But this is not the end. The most testing part is yet to be faced at the F1 in Schools World Finals in Singapore this September, which will see the best teams from over 40 countries compete for the World Champion title. “Thousands of hours of hard work have been put into this project. But holding the World Champions trophy at the end of this will make every second worth it”, beams Jain confidently.

Event
Robbie Williams Thrills
An electrified audience of 20,000 celebrated the ultimate showman Robbie Williams as his Let Me Entertain You show wowed the crowds at du Arena last month. Opening with his global chart hit, Let Me Entertain You, the star whipped the audience into a frenzy from the very start with his raw energy and stage persona. Showcasing his engaging dance moves, vocal range and wild style, the British star’s exceptional performance was lifted even higher by his striking backing singers and on-screen graphics, all tinged with his uniquely cheeky humour. Through his two-hour set of pure energy, Williams picked out every highlight of his extensive back catalogue, including Angels, Rock DJ, Feel, and Millennium, to name but a few. A few moments before Williams walked out on stage, a large screen flashed the words, “Marhaba (Arabic for hello). Are you there? I can’t hear you. Let me entertain you,” and the crowd roared with excitement. Everyone at the jam-packed arena was on their feet, ready to dance.
Williams had the crowd in the palm of his hand during the entire performance. The entire arena was pumping with adrenaline, as fans knew they were in for a treat, and Williams did not disappoint. This had to be one of the loudest and best live performances that Abu Dhabi has ever experienced.
"Williams had the crowd in the palm of his hand during the entire performance."

asma al shamsi emirati puppeteer! by bhargavi nagrecha
Meet the newest addition to the Iftah Ya Simsim muppet family, the super-talented Emirati puppeteer, Asma Al Shamsi, who will be the life behind Shams, a fun and energetic six-year-old girl.
Interview
29
Iftah Ya Simsim is the Arab world’s pioneer television series, being the first locally created and produced Arabic speaking version of the world’s longest-running educational TV series, Sesame Street. Set to re-launch later this year, the television series looks forward to reaching out to children to help inspire their day-to-day learning and empower them as future citizens of the region. Our team had the opportunity to sit down with Al Shamsi, who is the voice and essence behind Shams.
"We can attract the child using methods they like and respond well to — such as the entertaining style, games and moves." How did you get started? I have had prior experience in puppeteering, as I used to organise an awareness program called Atfal Al Hai for children with special needs, which involved the use of puppets to entertain them. I then saw an advertisement on social media for Iftah Ya Simsim and submitted a video of my work. I was then selected for the program and participated in the casting.
Were you always interested in becoming a puppeteer? Yes! It’s something that I find fun and interesting. Being a puppeteer involves living the character and giving it life, spirit, impressions and a special signature feature. Puppeteering provides a great experience, which helps us to learn on a continuous basis.
How and why do you use puppeteering to engage children who have many distractions in the present day and age? This does seem to hold true nowadays, given the varied means of kids’ entertainment that’s on the rise, especially with iPads, virtual games, PlayStations and so on. However, this doesn’t mean that the cartoon characters and puppets which we embody cannot attract the child, given the nice colours and how adorable the characters are. This definitely helps capture the attention of children. We have come to this conclusion through research, where we visited schools and gave the children a personal experience. We have also participated in many exhibitions and events, where the children have met the puppets, interacted with them, and have really shown great interest in them. We can attract the child using methods they like and respond well to — such as the entertaining style, games and moves.
What do you enjoy about your work? We never get bored with what we do! We have filmed almost 28 episodes, each of which focuses on a different topic. Each time we embark on a new adventure, that’s different from the one the day before. We live new experiences and new stories with the puppets when we create their movements, their characters, their style, and then we deliver the message in a fun way to the children at home through the TV. The Iftah Ya SimSim team of puppeteers and I have been working together for a long period of time shooting and performing rehearsals. And so staying in character that long has left its impact on us where, for instance, we have started to call each other by our characters’ names instead of our own. Sometimes we even forget to go back to our real selves and start to use the puppets' names. If anyone calls the name Shams I will immediately answer and I don’t have an issue with that. Also if anyone calls Gargour or Noman, the puppeteer will answer directly. We live and breathe our characters, and they also embody us.
How do you choose the subject for your show? I don’t choose the subject, but we study the topic instead. The subject is usually proposed, and the episode is presented. We read and understand the content and try to delve into the spirit of the character in the episode, figure out all of the different emotions, impressions and attitudes with other puppets or human characters in the program. The subject of each episode is the specialty of another team in Bidaya, who are responsible for proposing and creating the topics. During the first season, the three main topics we tackled were healthy eating, exercising, and Arabic vocabulary.
What style of puppets do you work with? I use the style in which I hold the puppets by my hand. There are other styles of puppeteering like full costume which I don’t do.
What advice would you give to the youth? A child’s life is all about play! My advice goes to the parents and not to the kids, or to the teachers as they play a part in their educational development. The more they go out, the more they will learn and discover. Their perspective will change and evolve, and they can learn by themselves, things other than what the school teaches them.
What does your average day look like — on a regular day and on a shooting day? On a regular work day, as I started working with Bidaya now, part of my work is to organise events and go to kids' festivals. For instance, very recently we participated at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, the Sharjah Book Fair and even Comic Con Dubai. So work is divided between routine work at the office, activities and events outside with children — such as the life-sized character Elmo walking around, taking photos with the kids and reading stories. Whereas on shooting day, we start at 8am and work until 7pm, which is around 10 hours of work with a one-hour lunch break. Actually it's lunch, pray and relax, all in one hour. When we are in the studio we don’t feel like we’ve been working for so long, we have been shooting for two and a half months and believe me when I say we’ve seen the sun only twice during the day — of course, other than seeing it in the morning when we wake up. Staying inside is also fun, as we have a library, there are also workshops and people performing, working and interacting, a playground area with kids’ playing and talking to the characters. For example, after we finish shooting a certain segment, kids will gather to talk to Shams and tell her things like ,“Your hair is nice," or, “I like your dress." Then they go to No’man and hug him, so even if we are done with shooting, the kids continue to talk to us as the characters they like, so we don’t feel like we’ve stopped shooting. In a way we still remain in character. The kids themselves don’t know my name, they know only Shams, so they will call me Shams whenever they see me.
Who comes up with the script? Can you walk us through the process? Many writers were selected from different Arab countries — some of them from the GCC and the rest from other Arab countries. They were carefully selected and have participated in workshops since. They work together and study the educational objective of the episode thoroughly, and build on it in order to write the script. They also merge Arabic vocabulary, which incorporates the formal and correct use of Arabic words, with the educational objective, whether it’s about exercise, healthy eating or any other subject.
Do you make your own puppets and what material do you use? I used to design my own puppets before joining Iftah ya Simsim, when I used to work with children at the special needs centre. I have also worked at the Early Intervention Centre, where I worked with children between the ages of three and five, and of course I knew that puppets would help them learn, so I used to design basic puppets using socks for example, and I’d use other material to make the hair and the eyes. They were really simple and basic but it meant a lot to the children and it was great to have such an impact on their imagination. However, I don’t professionally design puppets.

Do It!
CAN’T DO IT? FAKE IT! by Sarim Mahtab
We are pretty sure that by now you have given some kind of presentation at least once in the past — maybe during school, university or most recently during professional life. Now, we want you to fire up your brain cells a bit and go back to the day of your first experience on the spotlight. This could be a presentation, a speech or a stage performance. How did you feel when you first saw so many eyes staring back at you? We are sure nervousness would have been the highlight of your inner feeling, along with dozens of thoughts running through your head, right? It’s obvious since even the best of public speakers have gone through that exact same feeling at some point in their life. But what did they do to change that? The answer is very simple; they faked it. Dealing with so many different people all my life, I’ve realised that sometimes to connect with them, one has to put their opinions and feelings aside. Not because you are wrong and they are right, but rather just for the sole purpose of keeping an open mind and being there for the person you wish to communicate with. Now imagine a horrible day at work, one where your our boss is squeezing every drop out of you, your clients are complaining, you just spilled coffee on your suit and your computer has crashed on you without saving that document you were working on all week. But eventually the day is over and you are returning home to your family who are eagerly waiting for you. Do you show an annoyed and frustrated version of yourself to your family or do you greet them like it’s all that you’ve been looking forward to all day? Of course the latter, but to achieve that effectively is the art of faking feelings. Now let me tell you the best thing about faking it: you will eventually grow into it. That’s right, if you fake being happy, you will definitely reach a point when you will no longer have to fake it.

Fashion
Key Pieces Every Guy Needs by Kian Schmidt
Shirt Every guy needs some light denim shirts, and white or black t-shirts that can give your whole outfit a sense of class. In addition you could also wear a plain shirt even at formal events with a trendy pair of trousers and blazer. This feature will help you know exactly what staple items you need to get you through the average week- from work to the weekend. The end result is a lot of options, maximum utility and a polished you.
Hat A hat is a must have for a guy since it totally rounds the outfit together and give it the added edge. The bogart hat has made a come back will definitely compliment most casual outfits.
Trousers The most important thing with trousers is the colour so that it doesn't clash with other key pieces or the shoes. It is important to have formal and informal trousers so that you can pair for any occasion. Opt for neutral colours like navy blue, grey and shades of brown and you really can’t go wrong.
Shoes It is always a good idea to have a good variation of shoes that could be worn to different events. You will need the just-hanging-around shoe, which is your normal everyday shoe that should be very comfortable and work with everything. One white and one black pair of trainers with minimal detailing is all you need.
Watch For a man a watch isn’t just something you use to to check the time, it is more of a fashion piece that can be combined with every outfit. Watches can be worn anytime for any particular event.
Casual jacket There are so many options of jackets to choose from; leather, denim and casual blazers. Make sure you have a jacket that fits you perfectly around the shoulders and waist. Jackets could easily be paired with trousers or even a formal shirt and tie combination to create a polished look.
Jeans For starters aim for slim as compared to skinny, and dont be afraid to take them to a tailor to get the perfect fit. Try and stick to raw indigo colour, grey and black washes, if denim really is your thing. Keep the design simple, no distressed looks and definitely no logos or words on the back pockets.

Yoga
Dylan Werner The Urban Yogi by bhargavi nagrecha
"I focus more on unifying the mind, breath and body."
Dylan Werner was born and raised in the mountains of Southern California. Having a passion for healthy living and living an active lifestyle, he dedicated his life to pursuing this way of living. With a strong background in wrestling, rock climbing, martial arts, health and fitness, Werner found yoga to be a culmination of everything he loves. He was first introduced to yoga through his martial arts training in 2001. He then started teaching yoga in 2011 after 10 years of advanced movement training. Since then he has lead teacher training courses and workshops all over the world and is a recognised yoga instructor. When observing Werner on Instagram and YouTube one can see how passionate, fun, energetic and mindful his way of teaching yoga is. We love how he brings such poetic awareness to the various poses, better known as Asanas. Our team had the opportunity to connect with him and learn more about him and yoga.
Tell us about yourself. I'm a yoga teacher based out of Los Angeles, California. I never planned on being a yoga teacher. I used to be a firefighter or paramedic but the city I worked for went through financial hardships and I got laid off. I then moved to LA shortly after and decided to teach yoga full time. What motivates you to practice yoga everyday? I like how I feel after I practice. I'm happier, focused, centered, stronger, more flexible and most importantly I feel good. When I don't practice, I don't feel as good, and I definitely feel like something is missing. How do you manage to do such crazy poses? How long do you have to practice before getting it right? What's crazy to someone is someone else's norm. I don't think the poses I do are crazy. It's just a progression of my practice that has happened from practicing everyday. I really enjoy balancing on my hands. It helps to keep me present and find my meditation. So I tend to practice arm balances and inversions a lot. I don't worry about getting them right, as there is no perfect pose. I focus more on unifying the mind, breath and body. When I find that connection, the pose becomes easier and the yoga begins to happen. What do you eat on a daily basis? I eat what makes me happy and makes me feel good. I don't have a diet but if a food doesn't make me feel good I don't eat it. I try to eat healthy and sensible for the most part but I do love going out to a nice restaurant and having a great meal. Any advice for those who want to start practicing yoga? Start! Wherever you are. It doesn't matter if initially you are not as strong or not as flexible. The practice will make you strong and flexible. Get on your mat everyday, whether it's in a class or 10 minutes at home.

Aruna Jithin
Display The Galaxy S6 has a brilliant screen, and the Super AMOLED display offers perfectly clear images. It comes with 5.1-inch Gorilla Glass 4 screen with a pixel density of 1440 x 2560 and QHD screen resolution. The display is truly brilliant and is one of the best screens we have seen on a mobile phone. Camera The Galaxy S6 features a 16MP camera with optical image stabilisation and a 5MP front-end camera. The performance is very impressive and the super-advanced processor makes it really fast and reliable to use in all conditions.
The Galaxy S6 is the latest flagship smartphone from Samsung, and it is the most powerful phone ever made by the company. The S6 resolves almost all the criticism levelled at the S5. It runs on Android 5.0 and has the latest version of Samsung’s custom UI, making it more lively and beautiful. The glass and metal trimmed design is a huge step up from any of the other phones introduced by Samsung.
Verdict The Samsung Galaxy S6 is one of the best Android phones currently available, thanks to the high performance features and advanced design, and it tops the must-buy list. The only concern is on battery life. The price falls on the higher side, though this is justified by the new advanced features. Overall Rating: Battery Life – 7/10 Camera – 8/10 Design – 8/10 Screen Quality – 8/10
Design Samsung has gone bold on the design of the S6 as compared to the previous plastic-covered models. It is 6.8 mm thick and looks great in the hand. The battery is not removable and a microSD slot is not provided, so the device comes with 32GB, 64GB or 128 GB internal storage.

The Internet Pass-Through Mode also lets you browse the web and access the Canvio Aerocast simultaneously.
The Toshiba Canvio AeroCast Wireless HDD is a wireless highcapacity external storage solution for those who have a large media library and want to carry it on the go. It is a portable external hard drive with 1TB capacity and can connect up to six devices simultaneously. The Canvio AeroCast doesn’t need to be connected to the internet to access the files as it creates its own wireless LAN network. Browsing, streaming or saving files on your mobile devices is very easy with the dedicated Toshiba Wireless HDD
The Canvio AeroCast wireless HDD is compatible with: -Microsoft Windows 8.1, 8 & 7, -Mac OS X 10.7,10.8 and 10.9, iOS version 6 to 7 and -Android version 2.3 to 4.4. -USB 3.0 but also supports older USB 2.0 connections. Food Blogger
Pinch of Yum
Lindsay is a former fourth-grade teacher who started food blogging as a hobby, until recently when she decided to do this full time due to its ever growing presence and popularity. She lives with her husband, Bjork, in Minnesota. Apart from cooking and managing her blog, Pinch of Yum, Lindsay also loves chocolate chip cookies, Mexican food, her dog Sage, the Philippines, running by the lake during the fall, and sunsets. Our team had the opportunity to speak with Lindsay and see what makes her ticks. Where does your passion for cooking come from? I became especially interested in food in general because my family always really prioritised meal times. I wasn't always an awesome cook growing up, and I didn't spend hours in the kitchen with my mom making lots of food necessarily, but cooking for myself became a more significant part of my life when I was in college and then eventually when Bjork and I got married. I’ve always enjoyed food but it was during those young adult years that I really started to try more things in the kitchen and got excited about not just the eating but the cooking as well. Were you naturally good with the camera, or does it come from practicing and blogging? I had no idea what I was doing with the photography portion of the blog when we first started. We had a great camera, but I didn't know how to use it at all! Bjork knew some photography basics, so he taught me what he knew, and then I went on to take several classes and improve my skills through just hours and hours of practice. Now I love teaching photography classes to others and watching them go from shooting on automatic to knowing how to use the controls in manual to really get the look and feel they want in their food photography. What is your favourite ingredient? Garlic, maybe? Herbs? I love homemade sauces, so anything that allows me to make a homemade dressing or sauce to spice up a recipe is really my favourite part of cooking. What’s the most adventurous dish you have ever eaten? I ate a lot of really interesting things when we lived in the Philippines — I wish I could say I was brave enough to eat balut, but unfortunately I just couldn't stomach that one. I
"I’ve always enjoyed food but it was during those young adult years that I really started to try more things in the kitchen" remember trying a raw seafood dish called kinilaw — it's kind of like a Filipino version of ceviche. It was good, but for me, that was pretty adventurous. Which part of blogging excites you most: the recipe development, the post writing, or the photography? I think all of that together. I don't love recipe development in terms of testing a recipe many, many times, but I do love the process of creating something really delicious, taking pictures of that to share with my audience, and then writing something that makes people connect with the food and/or with me or each other. I think overall my favourite part is just posting new content and watching the connections that happen within the Pinch of Yum community. If our readers could only make one dish from your blog, which one should it be? I have a Thai salad that's really popular, chopped Thai salad with sesame garlic dressing, and I've always loved the red lentil curry. But I have to say, right now, getting ready for summer, my favourite recipe is a five-minute Magic Green Sauce that you can make really quickly in the food processor and put on just about anything. That's a really quick, easy, and delicious place to start! Connect with Lindsay:

When you see or feel the wrapper getting loose and elasticky, remove it from the water and set it on a damp towel. Pat it dry gently and dry your hands. Step 4: Arrange a few of the vegetables and herbs in the center of the wrapper horizontally, starting with the leafy greens and ending with the avocado. Fold the left and right sides towards the middle; fold the top flap over the vegetables, tuck everything in, and tightly roll it all up. Cut the rolls in half and place on a serving platter. Drizzle with the sauce or dip in the sauce or both!
Instructions Step 1: Soften the frozen fruit in the microwave or by leaving it out on the counter for a little while. Step 2: Blend the peaches with the water. Blend the raspberries with the coconut milk. Step 3: Combine the two fruit puree mixtures and stir in the chia seeds, flax, honey, and salt. Let stand for 10-15 minutes to thicken. Step 4: Serve with toppings of your choice. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to three days - add water to leftovers to rehydrate (the chia seeds will soak up a lot of the moisture, making them super thick).

Getting your Car Ready for the Summer by Miral Bushnaq
Summer is upon us and just like the Western countries brace winter, we — on this side of the world — must brace ourselves for the smoldering heat. Here are a few things you should be looking out for in order to increase your vehicle's lifespan.
Exterior Don’t ever forget to wash underneath your car, as the build up of grit may lead to corrosion in cases of high temperature where the car has to work harder to perform. Washing your car regularly will maintain the paint work and decrease the chances of scratches from dirt. You can even go for waxing your car with paint sealant, which will maintain the paint-job for months. Parking in the shade is always an added point if the opportunity is available.
Interior Using a windshield sunshade prevents your dashboard from melting away. Never underestimate the power of the sun! Consider applying a legal amount of tint on your windows for the summer months to keep your interior cooler and yourself happier and shaded. With the latest technology, tint shops offer a layer of tint that is see-through. You can apply it on your windshield and it acts as a heat reflector. Hot air build-up may lead to the deterioration of your car's interior. Certain car critics say that keeping your windows slightly open (by slightly, I mean half a centimetre) to allow for hot air to escape keeps the car cooler when parked.
Engine Considering the amount of work your car has to do to perform under such high temperatures, using coolant fluid that flows within your engine ensures smooth functioning. Also, cars have a bunch of different oils that allow it to function from motor oil to transmission fluid, power steering and brake fluids. Under certain temperatures, these oils overheat and struggle to perform as expected. By topping up these fluids you are allowing your car to drive comfortably. If you think of ninth-grade science class, you’ll remember the concept of evaporation. This process occurs with battery fluid at a much higher rate than in normal temperatures. Keeping your battery in check by making sure there is no build up of battery fluid will elongate its life. Is your air condition not as cool as it used to be? Drive down to a garage of any sort or petrol station where they can top up your refrigerant levels.
Tyres First thing's first, how visible are your tread patterns? Can you make out what the pattern is? If not, you may need a tyre change. Treads are the easiest way to detect wear and tear. If you can still see the pattern but find that the outer tread is more worn than the inner tread, consider rotating your tyres in an X formation (front-right tyre is replaced by the backleft tyre, front-left tyre is replaced by the back-right tyre). It is also key to keep the better tyres in the front because it is more dangerous to endure a flat tyre in the front than the back. Never forget to check on your spare tyre as it is just as important. Under high temperatures, air pressure naturally escapes through the components of the tyre. By making sure your PSI is always the same you prolong the life of your tyres as well as your wheels' internal construction.
May we endure this summer happily with no damaged car components!

Artist
Nader Dagher by Kian Schmidt
Nader Dagher is a Lebanese artist, illustrator, graphic designer and the founder of the design brand Art7akè. The unique thing about his artwork is the way he plays with the Arabic language in order to create puns. We love how he uses traditional sayings from a completely new, different and cool perspective. Every picture has a design or small clipart that perfectly represents the idea of the pun. Our team had the chance to interview him and here's what he had to say. How did you come up with Art7aké? What does it stand for? Ever since I graduated in 2009, I always had the pun "Art7akè" stuck in my head, which basically translates down to “art of words” in English. In addition I always wanted to associate it with a cool project and it finally took place last year in February when my interests in Arabic typography applied in design, fused with me being homesick. Since I was feeling homesick, I designed my first pieces and it said “homesick” in Arabic with an aerial photo of Beirut. What topics are you trying to cover and raise with your work? I try to cover designs and topics that most people can relate to. It can go from feelings to interests to humour and wordplay. Through these designs, I try to present the beautiful side of the Arabic language in pronunciation and writing, as I use different fonts as classic or modern types. In the Arabic language we have many sayings and words that have no parallels in other languages and the world needs to learn about them. How do you stay inspired to keep coming up with cool, new designs? Sometimes, the inspiration just comes from random conversations, songs, or movies, and other times, it's just a translation of certain moods and feelings. The trick is to look at things from a different perspective and find a thought that counts and a smart pun that you could reflect in the designs.
"The trick is to look at things from a different perspective and find a thought that counts"
How long does it usually take you to design one of your typical images? My vector designs, where I adapt a flat design, don't take a lot of time to produce once a certain idea is ready in terms of visualisation. Other designs that require more varieties of photo and editing tend to consume more time as there is more focus on typography and aesthetic elements. What advice would you give to people who would like to start their own small business? If you've got a solid idea and a strong belief in it with the proper market study, then don't waste your energy on anything else. There are many fields and ideas waiting to be tackled and in the end, it all comes down to how good you are and how much you put into it.

Believe you Can and You’re Half-Way There by Carol Alice D’souza
“In the presence of trouble, some people buy crutches, while others grow wings.”
We may face problems, but these are to test us to do our best. The difficulty is that some of us stop trying, in difficult times. We must always face a challenge with “how we can". Patience, will-power, determination, courage and confidence are the sterling qualities of the mind which are indispensable in the journey of life. The lives of great people are nothing but success stories, where it has been proved that sooner or later the man who wins, is the man who thinks he can. So having a positive attitude can turn scars into stars and thus win laurels in life. Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved. Change does not mean changing the way we dress or the way we look; it means changing our outlook towards life. Maybe having a broader perspective about things. Life is too short to hate so we should rather focus on accepting others the way we want to be accepted. Remember that you are the beholder of great beauty. Hold the beauty in your eyes, let it fill your sense and permeate your being. Glide with grace into every meeting and enjoy the colours and variety in every moment. Let everything you say, see, do, think and plan be coloured by the beauty that fills you. You’re divinely handcrafted and beautiful as you are.

New York Summer in New York is pretty amazing since there is so much to love. The entire city takes on an outdoorsy vibe, with parks and riverside spaces coming alive with picnickers, open-air film screenings, plays and concerts. But when it gets too hot one could easily escape into the sophisticated world of artistic museums. Do bring an umbrella or a lightweight raincoat. Otherwise, opt for light clothing: natural fibres such as cotton and linen.

London It is official: London is the most popular destination for tourists in the world. With so many fascinating museums, the best theatre scene, numerous top sporting venues, the city is a perfect place to spend the summer holidays. Very long days mean more sunshine, and that often makes Londoners move out of doors en masse, whether to pavement cafes, deck chairs in Hyde Park or to the seaside. So be sure to bring along Jeans, shorts and T-shirts, but don’t forget a longsleeve shirt or light jacket for the evenings.

Who doesn’t agree with Marilyn Monroe that “diamonds are a girl's best friend?" However we would offer our friendship to pretty rings, a jangly necklace or some sparkly earrings, too. Big or small, real or fake, understated or over-the-top, jewellery lifts the spirit. It breathes life into anything it touches and can make an ordinary outfit outstanding. While jewellery is a very personal thing — gifts from the loved ones, family heirlooms, purchases to mark significant milestones — it is also a reflection of your personal spirit. No
matter your individual preferences, adding jewellery to your style is an exciting process, so don’t stress and have fun with it. When it comes to fashion trends, a few are pretty apparent right now, such as the '70s suede hippie style, festival-inspired fashion. But as you get into more niche markets like jewellery, the trends can be a little less obvious. Let’s take a closer look at what pieces certainly deserve a place in your jewellery box this summer.

Single-earring trend Ever since Dior’s Raf Simons sent a parade of models down the Fall 2013 runway wearing one single earring, the fashion crowd has pretty much been hooked on the trend — and for good reason. The edgy single-earring trend has given way to a new take on ear ornamentation — the cool, unbalanced look. Whether it is off in colour or asymmetrical in shape or length, the beauty is found in the irregularity.

Chokers Think '90s fashion key pieces such as crop tops, overalls, combat boots, and ripped jeans. Now let's remember the key '90s accessories, namely chokers.
Maison Margiela
Everyone from Rita Ora and Miley Cyrus to top fashion bloggers have been rocking the super-tight necklace this year in various forms — tattoo chokers, metal chokers or bejewelled. It’s clear they’re back in a big way. The necklace now is all about the tight embrace, with chokers taking chic hold in heavy metals, gems and beyond.

Bohemian jewellery The fashion world is currently fixated with all things '70s and jewellery is no exception. The prevailing trend found its way to chunky, earthy pieces made for retro-fit boho lovers.

Gaming Project CARS Project CARS is a seriously extensive and demanding racing game for people who like their motorsport pure. This is a no-frill game filled with top 40 songs, explosive takedowns, and rewinds of crowds shouting for your victory. The game was made to capture the very essence of manhandling a real racing car around some of the world’s most famous racing circuits. Project CARS is a laborious but satisfying and brutal but fair game. There’s a lot to admire here, from the incredibly authentic feel to its lavishly detailed cars and tracks. A lot of work has clearly gone into producing a database of authentic sound systems, and we are seriously impressed with just how flexible the game is. The weather effects are awesome, and it’s overflowing with great content to explore. This is real racing done right. Practice.
Mortal Kombat X Mortal Kombat X maintains to uphold the series' legacy in the truest form with the addition of several class characters. The prior focus is still on the battle between realms, elder gods, and humanity. The latest game also marks the introduction of teams, which compete on a worldwide scale. Joining a team is the first thing you do after booting up the game, and as you fight in the game's various modes, you earn points for your team and level up. As you play Mortal Kombat X, you earn points in the form of "koins", which are used to unlock new levels, get access to new arenas, collect fan art, and character skins. Mortal Kombat X has a great roster with a wide range of diverse fighting styles and plenty of variations to play around with. The new fighting mechanics give it the added advantage to be one of the best fighting game of the year. There are some great character designs that really pop and stand out thanks to the great-looking visuals. Overall it is great game!
Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is an average attempt at transforming the Assassin's Creed experience into a moneymaking machine, however it lacks heart. Even though the game has all the right things it has managed to come out in a very dry, passionless manner that left us feeling unsatisfied. One of the worst things to ever happen to this game is probably the uninspired story itself, which is honestly quite vague. We found it extremely hard to feel connected to the game. On a good note the animations are smooth, but are deprived of personal style and energy, which makes the entire experience not so interesting. Overall the game was quite unsatisfactory.

Gemini 19 April — 20 May Geminis are extremely independent. They will not be pinned down by anyone or any rules. They need to experience the world on their own. Change and freedom are extremely important to them, they will never let anyone dictate to them, they are extremely independent and freedom is essential to their mental wellbeing. Geminis are widely known for their dual personalities and ability to change mood from moment to moment. Although they hate to be tied down, they are usually pretty lively and entertaining to be around. The twin sides of their nature are perpetually pulling in opposite directions. Their brains are subtle and brilliant but they usually "lack continuity of purpose". Of all people they are the most difficult to understand; in temperament they are hot and cold almost at the same moment. Their sharp wit and excellent powers of observation make them good raconteurs, although they have a tendency to exaggerate, which can cause trouble with their relationships.

One moment this month you will be enjoying peaceful tranquility that offers predictability and stability. Another moment brings an explosivity and unpredictability in your life. You will learn, over time, to accept and maintain balance between both this month. You will enter into a period that will demand more from you, so be flexible and accommodating to the changes that everyone should be happy.
June brings a strong focus on personal changes, money, and work. If you need to sort out your finances, now is a good time to do so, although there can be some challenges involved. If you're not receiving support in ways you wish you were, then simply ask for it. It is possible you're giving an impression of not needing it.
June brings an interesting mix of energies to your life, but it can be complicated as well. Sometimes you feel very much in control and other times you're not sure who's in charge. Perhaps the greatest challenge of the month is gaining others' understanding. People may not be "getting" you for the time being. So learn to be clear, patient and compassionate.
You appear now to be up against someone who sees you as inferior and someone who couldn't possibly be as knowledgeable as they are. You're about to prove them very wrong. The month holds great promises on your work front. There would be ample scope for finishing off long-pending tasks now. Finances might take a beating. Keep calm, the month end shall bring in fresh inflow from all quarters.

It's not easy to bid farewell to what is familiar and comfortable. In an area of your world, possibly connected with home and family, winds of change are starting to become gusts. Something positive and necessary is coming but to receive it, you're going to have to make space or do some reworks. Do so in the knowledge that you will gain something special.
During the month the cosmos is focused now on gently encouraging you to assess how you prioritise what you do on a daily basis and identify ways of improving how you do it. You're about to become even more effective where organisational matters are concerned. It's time to do a few things differently for a change. Make hay while the sun shine, for looming clouds are all around.
You are not impressed by the way your life is moving at present. You could find yourself becoming increasingly complacent in some ways through expecting innovative developments and the occasional miracle. The sky speaks now of you being impressed, surprised and delighted in some way — and in that order, too!
Opportunities always bring change. The upheaval and potential insecurity you feel are attached to seizing an opportunity now or taking a risk that could outweigh the benefits of what you're considering doing. A decision about where you go from here in an area of your world can't be avoided but it can be seen as the very positive step forward that it is if you're willing to see it as that.

Some secrets related to you can remain buried or undetected for many years. If willing you may reveal some to your closest associates in life. Something you would prefer to stay concealed could be rearing its head. Honesty really is the best policy where this little episode is concerned. So don't be afraid and accept the situation and learn from past mistakes.
Familiarity, they say, breeds contempt. Soon, you will be released from a situation you've been in for too long. Get out of your comfort zone and be prepared to take some hard risks in life. This is the only way to march ahead in life. Or else you would be trampled upon by others who are overtaking you in the long race. Keep going, 'Cap; do not be complacent.
With little effort, you would be able to get rid of the fears that have been haunting you for quite sometime. Fear, however, is holding you back in some way now. Something you're afraid of is preventing you from attaining something very special. Do what you fear most and your fear will truly fade away. The month ahead promises good trends in your personal space.
A sense of fairness prevailing in a certain area could be taking up much of your thinking time right now. It doesn't appear to be a case of someone missing out or going without but more to do with you being keen to ensure that what's good for one person is good for another. There is no need to enforce justice, though. It will come about on its own, in its own time.
