My Say Tell us what you think!
BACK TO REALITY The summer is always like a dream, whether you travel or not you tend to get lazy, and then all of a sudden it hits you. As if you and everyone around you have had a dose of some powerful energy drink after long months of hibernation. Those of you going to university are wondering what life is going to be like now that you’re on your own. Although you think you’re ready; think again. There are so many things your parents don’t tell you about what to expect at uni. First of all because they probably don’t remember half of it and second because things were probably a little different a gazillion years ago. (p. 13) We definitely had a lot of fun prepared for our interns this summer and we all had a blast and laughed our heads off doing some pretty crazy stuff. (p. 6). We even got an XBOX Kinect at our office which we’re planning to use and abuse. If anyone is interested in coming over for a game or two please email us at mysay@one8one.net To beat the outside heat we decided to go somewhere even hotter. Check out our experience at Bikram Yoga (p. 46). Some of us couldn’t even touch our toes unlike our stunning cover ballerina who floated effortlessly (p. 34). Now that we are all happy and relaxed we may want to give something back to humanity. Do you know how easy it is to save someone’s life? All you need to do is give some of that red liquid that runs through your veins (p. 56). Don’t take it for granted because every drop counts.

Summer fun
Our internships run throughout a whole year and this summer was no different. We’ve had some incredible people intern over the past couple of months and here is what some of them had to say.
Anvita Achar
Laura Tibi Hey everyone, I’m Laura, just a fifteen year old who dreams of her work being published in a magazine. My two most favourite things in the world would probably be dance and design. They’re a part of who I am and define my creativity. When I was first offered the internship, I thought to myself, “This is it! My chance to write and have people read it. My chance to be published.” one8one has really helped me realize that your fictional fantasies can really turn into a reality; I know it’s cliché, but if you go out there and chase after your dreams, they’re bound to come true. My first day was like anyone’s first day, I was pretty quiet and unusually shy, but within the first hour I instantly clicked with another girl who was just like me. We both loved fashion and both loved to write and design. Everyone here was super friendly and the atmosphere of the office was always energetic. Sometimes we would all spend the whole day typing away at our laptops and coming up with dozens of new articles and ideas. But it never really felt like work, you always did tasks you loved and enjoyed. I think one8one has really opened doors for me and I got to meet some amazing new people. One thing I learnt for sure is to always go after your dreams and make them come true.
My summer internship at one8one was nothing short of amazing. You may think that writing articles for a magazine does not sound exciting or fun, but being a part of the wonderful team here makes writing articles incredibly fun. The best part of working here is getting to interview different kinds of people and experiencing new things. At one8one, my ideas were valued and we all worked together to come up with themes and articles for the upcoming issues. The atmosphere here is always bustling and your creativity is encouraged. I look forward to working here again and I encourage everyone else to try it out. Ebad Syed Interning at one8one magazine was an awesome experience. It turned out to be totally opposite of what I expected for my first internship. Here we had the ideal office environment, freedom to give new ideas for the magazine and write and do whatever we wanted. In addition to this, covering The Big Start award ceremony on second day of internship, doing Bikram yoga with Maria (editor), Anton (graphic designer) and others, learning about the printing process at printing press and the photo shoot for cover page at a studio, all added to my valuable experience at one8one magazine. I must say one couldn’t ask for a better opportunity to learn and have fun.
Maryam Al-Irhayim
Farah Hamdy
My internship at one8one has been everything except ordinary. I’ve never had more fun learning. Weather I am typing on my computer or writing on walls, there is always something funny in the office awaiting to happen for all of us to laugh hysterically at. one8one gives you the opportunity to write freely about what you want then send it off to be published. You learn the details of the procedure that goes into making the magazine as well. I have made many great friends from this amazing opportunity, picked up many skills along the way and I’ve not only learned new things but I’ve had fun along the way. One of my favourite memories dressing up in the most randomest of costumes when Maria brought a box full of them. I strongly recommend joining the one8one crew, it’s one of those once in a lifetime experiences that you will never regret. Big thanks to Maria for pushing me further and allowing me to take part in this great experience. I will miss everyone that I met at one8one and I cannot wait to partake again hopefully next summer. As Albert Einstein once said “Logic gets you from point A to B imagination gets you everywhere.”
Work: a place where you’re stuffed with chocolate till you can’t breathe, fed pizza for lunch and allowed to trot around in pink feather boas. Or at least that’s what I thought after my internship at one8one magazine. Saying that working at one8one has been a blast doesn’t do the experience justice. The three weeks I’ve spent there have been truly unconventional. Every day was different, every day I did and learned something new. Perhaps the most important thing I’ve learnt at one8one is that everything is possible and everything is doable. From ordinary things such as going to press conferences to crazy things like sky diving; by the end of my internship I fully and utterly believed that “If I could think it, I could do it”. During my three weeks I was mainly involved in article writing, but I was also involved in everything else too. I learned a bit about marketing, a bit about graphic design, a bit about mass printing and a lot about making what I want happen. Although it seems like I’m mentioning the same point too much, I truly can never emphasize on it enough as the whole atmosphere of one8one does, because this is what this magazine is all about; it’s about expressing, creating and, most importantly, achieving. I can’t thank Maria ,the awesome editor, or anyone else I worked with at one8one enough for this wonderful experience; I learned a lot more than I contributed.
Mohammed Al Qamzi I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my two months here at one8one. I had the opportunity to work in media sales and I’ve also been given the opportunity to review games and music albums, attend meetings, meet new people, and see how different aspects of the magazine are created and combined together into a final product. It’s definitely not your average kind of internship as you’re not really told what to do and it’s really up to you as an intern to see how much you want to make out of the experience. You’re given the opportunity to give your input in the magazine’s creation process which is an equally rewarding experience in its own right. Having any reservations and self-doubt isn’t really recommended when you’re at one8one since everyone there is happy to give advice and counsel if you need anything. With that said, it has been an amazing opportunity to work together with Maria as she is the most inspirational and motivational person I’ve ever had the chance to work with. The one8one team truly feels more like a family than a group of co-workers. I can’t wait to see the next issues of the magazine and I wish nothing but the best for both one8one magazine and its equally brilliant team.

S’ cool stuff AUD Team Wins Financial Trading Challenge The AUD team represented by students Milad Abbasi and Rashid Khan won Dubai’s Professional Trading Group (DPTG) Inter-University Financial Trading Challenge competition against groups from other universities in Dubai. AUD’s winning team was offered a fully paid scholarship to DPTG’s three-month intensive Trader Training program. This opportunity would not have been possible without assistance from the Career Services Office at AUD whose mission is to encourage Students to take advantage of such important challenges. AUD Alumni Milad and Rashid, who called their team AUD Warriors, spent fifteen days sharing their thoughts, synchronizing their strategies and analysing the market prices to try to make profits. Their team was the only one out of three teams that made profit by the end of the final round, and hence, was declared the winner. Both team members were happy to receive the award from DPTG and definitely encourage students from all majors to participate in DPTG’s next competition, knowing that it will allow them to acquire extra skills that will help them for their academic and professional development. Dubai’s Professional Trading Group (DPTG) has been converting novices into successful, profitable traders since 2007. In conjunction with Eurex, one of the world’s leading derivatives exchanges, and Marex Spectron, the world’s largest privately owned broker of financial products in the commodities sector, it launched the first Inter-University Financial Trading Challenge in the UAE, pitting eight teams of five against their peers, each drawn from one of Dubai’s foremost finance and business universities.

Everyone will tell you the same things about university - they’ll be the best years of your life, and they should be! However, the people you ask either won’t remember or will not go into detail about everything you want and need to know. It’s up to you to ask the questions, or figure it out for yourself, but there are a few major points that people often forget to tell the incoming first years. Not to worry though, we have your backs!

money, money, money
Unfortunately, university life is costly - you are at the point where mommy and daddy are not going to pack your lunches for you, or fold your clothes. You are now entering the halfway point between being dependent to becoming independent, and more often than not, it comes as a shock to a lot of people. This means that in terms of financial matters, you are in charge. The university is not going to email your parents every time you have to pay a fee (but on the bright side they will not email your grades to them either), so you have to be on top of that. You will get the hang of it after a month or so, but make sure you are allocating your money wisely.
TIMING
Trust us, you DO NOT want to be stuck in rush hour on your way to a class, or late for the lunch hour, or late for appointment. Be early, if you can, grab yourself a coffee or snack and chill. If you are a commuter, you will get the hang of knowing when not to leave the house because your mode of transport will be suffocating because of the congestion of rush hour. However, even if you live on campus, being on time is important; again, you have grown up and most universities will not stand for being late to appointments or tutorials. Again, timing is important when you go to get your food from the cafeteria for your meal plan, make sure you figure out the times when the line is super congested and then don’t go during those times. Simple enough, right?
classes and FOOD will often mislead you into homework Universities thinking you’re going to eat a certain
You may think, ‘naaah, I’ve got plenty of time to do my work, my class is only once a week; you’re thinking wrong. The best possible system when it comes to classes is actually going to class and starting your work as soon as possible. You thought you had ‘senioritis’ in your last year of high school? Well you’ll have ‘senioritis’ all throughout university; procrastination will be your biggest enemy, so time management is critical. Yes it is possible to skip a few of the classes, but only so long as you have a friend to provide you with the notes and you have done the readings, otherwise you will be like a nail being twisted into a board - that’s right ‘screwed’. Be vigilant and do your work and you will be alright.
amount of meals in a week or month. However, unless your university’s meal plan is based on a gourmet menu, more often than not, you will find yourself eating pizza every other day. So the best advice is to buy the smallest meal plan they provide, because a lot of the time you will be eating out with friends or ordering take out or just heading the grocery store to stock your room with snacks. Also because there are certain timings for when the university serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and your first class is at 11am but breakfast is at 9am, you don’t want to wake up that much earlier. Starbucks, Second Cup, or whatever your favourite coffee shop is will become your new best friend - so much so that the baristas will know your name by the end of the first month.
the books
One of the most annoying and ridiculous processes you go through in your entire university experience is the book buying battle. Rule number 1: unless the professor has asked for the newest edition of a text, you NEVER buy a new textbook. It’ll drain your monetary funds faster than you can blink. So get yourself to a used bookstore (more often than not the university you’re attending will have a section of used books, but you could still probably get it cheaper elsewhere), or to another student who has already taken the class and buy it off of them. When you are done with a course, sell the book! Sell it back to your university or to another student; you’ll get money back, you’ll have fewer books to lug around when you move out after your first year, and you’ve saved another student a lot of hassle. You have to be cheap when it comes to the textbooks at university.

Gaming
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition You asked for this. Now prepare to die! Okay, that was bad, but it’s true. When Dark Souls released for the consoles last year, PC gamers setup a petition asking for the game to be ported to their platform. Namco were hesitant, but conceded, with the game developer From Software admitting they have absolutely no idea how to make a good PC game and will be releasing the game as is, with all the glitches and frame rate drops present in the console version. To compensate for that, the PC version will be fitted with a ton of new content, totalling up to 10+ hours according to the developer. It will have new bosses, new areas, new enemies, new weapons, and an online matching system for co-op or PVP play. The game is currently available for pre-order on Steam.
Counter Strike: Global Offensive Does it really need an introduction? Counter Strike is one of the most played online shooter games on the PC, and even a decade after its release, it continues to be so. This month, Valve will be releasing an updated version of the title, with improved graphics, fine-tuned mechanics and a slew of new gameplay modes. Will it match the original classic?
Guild Wars 2 The anticipated MMORPG from ArenaNet is finally releasing this month, and if the recently concluded Beta is any indication, we may finally see an MMO other than Word of Warcraft take off. It’s a massive scale RPG that strays away from many of the constraints that the MMO genre adheres to. It focuses on exploration while letting the combat flow uninterrupted thanks to the game’s battle system that allows a player to use all of his powers at once – no fretting over mana or pausing a game in order to so. There are five races to choose from, with numerous PVP world events to partake, and a gorgeous world to indulge in.
Transformers: Fall of Cybetron One would assume that making a videogame out of a movie/comic book franchise is literally impossible. After all, history is witness to the failed attempts at such, including the many Transformers games that have so far been unsuccessful at transforming the dry, rough path of videogame adaptations to a river full of flowing green dollars. High Moon Studios, who are also currently working on the anticipated Deadpool title, however, are looking to re-write those assumptions. IGN have had multiple opportunities to try out the third-person shooter, and we have come away impressed with not only the singleplayer campaign, but also the game’s co-op and multiplayer modes. If you are waiting for a good Transformers game to satiate your desires of some robot vs. robot action, this could be it.
Sleeping Dogs It seems largely unlikely that Grand Theft Auto V is releasing this year, but Sleeping Dogs is touting a similar experiencing if you are itching for a gritty, open-world action drama. Previously a THQ game, but now under the shade of Square Enix, United Front’s third-person shooter promises a unique setting of a bustling and crowded Hong Kong, with a combat system focused on performing an extensive set of martial art moves, weaving together bonecrunching combos and environmental takedowns in satisfyingly violent ways.
Billy Bob’s Blood Drenched Brew
Billy Bob’s blood drenched brew is a fourpiece Extreme Metal band based in Dubai. Formed in late 2010, the band’s current line-up is composed of Ardalan “RD” Saberi on vocals, Vineet Mohandas on guitar, Aaron Wadia on Bass and Joshua Saldanha on the drums. The first thing that strikes you when you hear about this band is their zany band name, and although the story on their Facebook page might have you asking if these guys are meshuga, the actual story has it’s origins in a Deira “chai” place where RD and Vineet were discussing the subject when various names such as “Blood Drenched” were thrown around, and the word “brew” was added to modify the originally cheesy title. Although Blood Drenched Brew seemed to be a relatively decent moniker, “Billy Bob’s” was added just for good measure and thus, Billy Bob’s Blood Drenched Brew. Although the band might be a newcomer to the scene, its members are definitely not - each coming from various different bands based in Dubai. Billy Bob’s Blood Drenched Brew was originally formed in order to participate in Metal Asylum’s RAM battle just as a means to play a show, as their (the members) previous bands were either defunct or were composed of younger members that were not legally allowed to play any of the 21+ shows that were taking Dubai by storm. A couple of original songs were written specifically for this one off show, but the band quickly gained followers and admiration from their fellow musicians due to their blend of heavy, yet technical compositions never before seen or heard in the scene. The band referred to this refined blend of grind core, technical/brutal death metal with hints of Slam Death metal as “Brew Metal.” With the aid of their young and talented band manager, Diana, Billy Bob’s Blood Drenched Brew was out playing shows constantly and were even invited to open for German technical death metal band Obscura as well as Fleshcrawl - an old school death metal band from Germany. Since then, a fulllength album has be speculated. They will be a name that will pop up more frequently as they have been labelled one of Dubai’s most up and coming bands. But if Death Metal is your thing, or if this batty bunch have got your mouths watering, check out their facebook page for more at: http:/www. facebook.com/bbbdb

This is a story that will never get old. Mathilde is a young woman, who has been given the news of her fiancée’s death during World War One. Her mind might not question validity of such devastating news, yet her heart seems to differ. Mathilde goes on an excruciating quest to find the truth about her lover for she believes there is a good chance he is alive. It’s a beautiful story of how big and restless a human heart can be.
This latest zombie flick takes a different twist on a story. This time it’s a group of teenagers looking to get away from the boredom of today. The friends end up going to a far-off cabin in the woods and when the door of the cellar opens, they are more than eager to investigate. With nobody around and no way to communicate with the outside world, will they survive the horror they have just walked into?

Album Reviews by

USHER ‘Looking 4 Myself:’ For someone who’s been in the business for 20 years, it’s almost a wonder how Usher manages to remain strong in an era where most singers are usually irrelevant after their sophomore album. His latest offering, “Looking 4 Myself”, is cocktail of all things we’ve come to expect from Usher; R&B, hip hop, soul, and some electro pop thrown in for good measure. We’re already familiar with singles such as “Climax” and “Scream” from the heavy airplay they receive on radio stations and the rest of the album proves to be just as good. Looking 4 Myself follows Usher’s recent trend in experimenting with dance and pop in conjunction with his traditional R&B and it has proven to be as successful as his past attempts.
REBECCA FERGUSON ‘HEAVEN’ If you’ve been keenly following the X-Factor, then you’ve probably bought this album already. If not, then take a moment and really think about what you’ve been missing out on. Rebecca Ferguson captured the hearts of many when she first auditioned on the show’s seventh season. She might have been a runner up but that’s not stopping her debut album Heaven from potentially becoming a timeless classic. All ten tracks on Heaven are just that; heavenly, if you’d excuse the pun. Highlights on the album include her debut single “Nothing’s Real But Love”, “Glitter & Gold”, “Diamond to Stone”, and “Fighting Suspicions”, which are even more amazing when you realize that she co-wrote every single song on her album in order to connect with the songs better (she’s no one-trick pony this one). If you’re a fan of true soul-divas like Adele, Amy Winehouse, and even greats like Aretha Franklin and Macy Gray then you’re in for a guaranteed treat!

Photos: Flash This is the day I had been waiting for for years. I have imagined and reimagined it over and over again, planning the tiniest of details; everything from my outfit to what music I’d be listening to on this day and what not. Going to Madonna’s show was a project on its own for me and every other poor soul I shall call my friends who decided to join me on that day. As we’ve come to expect, Flash is the company that brings the biggest names in music industry to the beautiful Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. This time it was none other than the Queen of Pop herself; Madonna was scheduled to grace the stage on the 3rd and 4th of June. I personally thought that it was absolutely mad to have an outdoor concert in the UAE in June, and as it turned out, people agreed; yet, still thousands flocked to every entrance of du Arena on the days of the shows.
Luv MDNA Madonna
Although I was to be in the Golden Circle area (right in front of the stage) I was in total shock when I won the Golden Triangle tickets from her official website! That landed me in a small triangle within the actual stage along with the other lucky winners and those who had spent a hefty premium. So after queuing for a good couple of hours under the sun, and some good running around (once the gates opened), my friend and I found a lovely spot right at the front of the triangle. There was only the stage and us, eagerly waiting for the Queen to come out. At about 9pm Benny Benassi came onstage to heat up the temperature even further; his LED deck kept the eyes of the concert-goers fixed on the stage. A little over an hour later a massive thurible appeared above our heads rocking back and forth spreading smoke all over the massive stage. Seconds later, Madonna made her entrance breaking out of a glass fixture dressed in black head to toe, with ‘Girl Gone Wild’ blasting out across the whole island. One of the most notable numbers was Madonna’s stab at Lady Gaga and her controversial ‘Born This Way’. It has been speculated that Lady Gaga might have borrowed a little more than just a beat line from Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself.’ To add some salt to the injury, Madonna herself mixed ‘Born This Way’ into her live rendition of ‘Express Yourself’, followed by her ‘She’s Not Me’. Whether it was a message to Gaga or just a fun joke, the decision is yours to make.

ANTON RODIONOV
Overall the show was amazing, the setup featured a gigantic stage with bigger-thanlife LED screens, amazing dancers who sometimes seemed inhumanly flexible and, of course, Madonna herself, with the stamina of all of us combined. I am satisfied to have seen this woman perform and recommend you do the same whenever you get a chance. It was brilliant! Oh, and I seriously hope I am this fit at her age.

My Immortal Evanescence
I remember watching Amy Lee on TV in her stripy socks and puffy goth-like skirts and thinking that she was the coolest, and to hear that Evanescence was to play in Dubai left me with a sense of nostalgia and had me looking forward to the event to come. Stepping into the venue, it became apparent that my excitement was not exclusive. The crowd was pumped and ready for the show, roaring loudly as soon as the intro music kicked in. The first band to walk onstage was local band EYE who I am a massive fan of for their progressive style of music and trippy visuals which create a very different atmosphere for their audience. They are definitely a band worthy of sharing the stage with big names such as Anathema and Evanescence. Though they seemed to have a few technical issues, they managed to pull of an incredible show and got the crowd prepped for the big band to come. I was looking forward to Evanescence’s performance and was curious about Amy’s stage performance. I think I speak for everybody who showed up when I say that Amy and the rest of the band put on a great show and kept their eager fans entertained throughout the night. I was very impressed with Amy’s vocal range and performance (since most artists these days tend to rely on computer software in the studio to fix their vocals) as well as the precision displayed by the rest of the band. It was also a treat to see the grand piano carried on stage as the band performed their slower tunes. The lighting was brilliant and was just as pleasing to the eyes as the band was to our ears. It was an incredible night Traffik Events had put together and was definitely worth every second.

Neon Night Ferry Corsten
Ferry Corsten is not only a DJ and a producer but also a pioneer. He conceived the “Dutch trance sound”, which makes him a revolutionary figure in the dance music industry. This summer, Abu Dhabi had the pleasure of having his talent enrich its cultural scene and I was lucky enough to get an exclusive invitation. Before arriving at the du Forum on Yas Island, I was excited to experience Ferry Corsten’s music, which had already put the city into a trance. As I got out of the car, the very first thing that caught my attention was the intense music that was playing in the area, energizing the bustling crowds of fans just waiting to get a glimpse of the legend. Beams of colourful neon lights in orange and green filled the little space left among the crowds, illuminating the area.
Photo: Angeli Castillo
The crowd was incredibly enthusiastic and welcoming to the Dutch DJ, and as the night wore on, the energy was still electrifying as we walked out of the arena and several fans continued dancing in the parking lot. Climbing into the car we could hear people chanting “FERRY! FERRY!” This night was definitely a night to remember.

The athletics kids
Which one are you?
‘Everybody run three more laps around the field.’ ‘How about five, I can run three laps in my sleep!’ Dude, are you trying to get us killed?
the quiet one
This kid never talks; he/she probably masquerades as a superhero on weekends.
the popular ones
“So I was talking to my BFF, then I realized this guy was like totes listening in on my convo, and I was like, WTH? So I go, ‘OMG, are you snooping?’ and he was like, ‘Obvi.’” Please stop using so many abbrevs.
The underachiever
Studying for a test? Pfft yeah right! Getting good grades? Who needs them? School? Nah, I’d rather not.
the class clown
Student: Can I go to the bathroom? Teacher: Can you? Student: Well it kinda depends, sometimes I can sometimes I can’t. This kid just automatically brightens the mood when he walks in.
the princess
This one is used to having everything she wants, and doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Her family has piles of money and she brags about it ALL the time, but as soon as she doesn’t get what she wants, she throws a hissy fit.
the one who just woke up
This guy shows up 10 minutes late to class in the clothes he wore last night. He sits at the back and spends the majority of school time sleeping.
the answering machine
‘So what’s the answer to X?’ The teacher asks a question. Silence. The Answering Machine breaks the awkward silence and finally answers. For the rest of the school year, the classroom is a conversation between The Answering Machine and the teacher.
the really nice one This kid might just be the only normal one in class. But define NORMAL.
the rebel
I really don’t care that you had three classes today and skipped them all. People are not going to be impressed by how bad you were for purposely sleeping in.
the drama queen
‘Well you know I just had the WORST time in pre-school. I mean nobody understood me there but when I came here, I just felt like a BUTTERFLY, able to finally open my creative WINGS.’ I totally understand – NOT.
the geeks
Whenever I see them in the hallway, I hurry past. To be honest, they scare me with their technical talk. ‘Do you know that 5 out of 10 people have crytoscopophilia?’ What does that even mean?

First Impressions by hayla ghazal
smile
Smile when you first introduce yourself. It is not necessary that you show your teeth; you can give a simple grin. Do not laugh the first 60 seconds and do not fake your smile either as it will be obvious since real smiles pull back both the mouth and eyes, so smile from your heart but not to the extent that your upper or lower gum shows! Be careful not to shift from a smile to a straight face too quickly, or people will sense that you’re being fake or that you dislike them.
mood
We all have a bad day every once in a while but you don’t get another chance to make a better impression, so look happy and focused.
speech
Present yourself appropriately “Good afternoon, I am James, you are/your name is?” When introduced, keep repeating the person’s name throughout the conversation to remember the name and to make the person feel important: “It’s so nice to meet, you Sara.” Get the person to talk about himself or herself. “So, what do you usually do in your free time?” A compliment is sometimes appropriate “That’s a lovely shirt”.
We all have exactly one chance to make a good first impression. In the first six to thirty seconds of meeting someone new, they will make several assumptions about you including your success, education and knowledge. Many people make these assumptions from your appearance before you even say a single word! Your clothing, posture and facial expressions affect these judgments. Unfortunately, if the opposite person forms a negative opinion of you, a lot of hard work is required to gain credibility. Although many of us understand how important first impressions are, we sometimes fail to make a positive one. We might be upset, irritated or tired that day and therefore create a lousy impression. Here are a few things you should keep in mind to impress everyone you just met:
eye contact
Make direct eye contact as this will add to your credibility. Great eye contact shows people that you are genuinely interested in them. A powerful technique you can use is to notice the color of the other person’s eyes as you shake their hand or introduce yourself.
handshake
Develop a powerful handshake. No, this doesn’t mean you should crush the other person’s hand but you should have a firm grip and pump your hand once or twice only.
grooming
Go easy on the perfume; you don’t want to choke everyone with the smell. Spray your perfume into a distance and wait a few seconds before walking through the sprayed area. Do not spray your right hand as the smell will move onto another person’s hand while introducing yourself and it can be annoying to get rid of.
Posture
Carry yourself well by keeping your back straight while sitting, standing and walking. Hold your head and chin high and keep your shoulders relaxed.
Clothing
Choose clothes that are appropriate for the time of the day, occasion and environment. Do consider the season as well. Example: Never wear sandals during the winter, even if you are just going to the mall.
Keep your hands to your side or in your lap. Never fidget, bite your fingernails, play with your hair or a napkin.
Misha Goddard
“I would love to be a part of the major classical Ballets, such as ‘Swan Lake’ and ‘Giselle’ as well as trying some more modern choreography such as the works of Merce Cunningham..”
Hi Misha, you’re an amazing dancer! How old were you when you first started dancing? I first started dancing when I was 3 years old, in Romford at Wynne School of Dance. I started with my best friend Raelle Pickton, so it was always a lot of fun more than anything else! My mother was a dancer when she was younger, however she stopped when she was about 16 and she always regretted that. Therefore she made sure I stuck to it throughout my childhood. Why do you dance? How does it make you feel? I dance because I enjoy it and I find it truly exhilarating. Although dancing on stage is the highlight of being a dancer, I also find the training process to be very rewarding. Dancing with other talented dancers is a lot of fun, as well as the learning experience as you work off of each other. Dancing has always been a huge part of my life and I can’t imagine my life without it. ambre battistella Ballet is clearly your passion, but do you learn any other forms of dance? Of course! I started contemporary about 5 years ago. Contemporary is different Misha Goddard was born and lived in England, to ballet as it is a lot more free. I find I can express myself a lot more through before moving to Dubai in 2005. She leaves contemporary dance, as the movements are not as restricted. In classical ballet, Dubai College to pursue her dreams of being everything has to be perfect, which is a good contrast. In addition to that, I have a professional ballerina. Her busy expat life done Salsa - which is a lot of fun , a lot of modern, street jazz and tap. I’ve even over the years has resulted in Misha balancing tried a bit of break-dancing, although I have to say its not my strong point! her family, friends, achieving excellent grades and dancing a minimum of 10 hours a week. What has been your favourite ballet show that you have taken part in? She has achieved local recognition, winning There have been so many, it’s hard to say! I think that the show I enjoyed the four trophies and two medals, being a leading most was Turning Pointe’s recent production of ‘Peter Pan’. I performed as the dancer in many shows and getting paid to mischievous fairy Tinkerbell, which was a very entertaining role and one quite participate in numerous flash mobs in famous different to any other I’ve played. I also loved the costumes in this production, and tourist settings. Her success stretches on it was an added bonus that I was with my friends. further now that she has been accepted to the prestigious Northern Ballet School in I also heard you’ve taken part in many big flash mobs here in Dubai. Which was Manchester, England. your favourite one and why? The flash mobs were all a lot of fun! However I have to say that my favourite Her achievements are meritable, as this girl flash mob was the one I did for Harvey Nichols one year ago. I did this in Mall of surely deserves all the success she is getting. the Emirates and it was my first flash mob, which probably made it a lot more Her efforts and high determination over exciting. It was for Harvey Nichols 5th year anniversary in Dubai, so it was based the years are paying off, with all her dreams on a Fashion Catwalk theme. It was also great as the people in the mall were coming true. She is an inspiration to many so shocked and we got a great reaction from them. Another great flash mob young adults around the UAE to pursue their that I have done was the one in Dubai International Airport, where we all had a passions, and reach for success. one8one different role to play – I was a student traveller. Some people were dressed as caught up with Misha, where she told us about her busy lifestyle in Dubai, why dancing is vital in her life and her hopes and dreams for the future. by

airhostesses whilst others were dressed as Duty Free shop keepers! The Airport flash mob was the one that has had the most publicity out of all the flash mobs I’ve done, so it was exciting to be a part of something that big. It has about 3 million hits on youtube now, which is absolutely crazy! What other events have you been a part of? I have also been a part of the ‘Fifa Club World Cup’ opening and closing ceremonies, which involved crazy costumes and mass movement routines. I also participated in the ‘Emirates Dubai Rugby 7S’ opening ceremony. I find these kind of events to be quite scary as they have such a huge audience, however this makes them that much more exciting to be a part of. When you won your ‘Most promising Student’ Award at your dance company, how did you feel? I couldn’t believe it at first! I was backstage when my name was called out and I couldn’t move. My friends had to push me on stage! It was surreal. After collecting my award I then had to go straight on stage for my dance; I was very shaken up to say the least. It’s such a privilege to have been considered for this award. Was the process of getting into Ballet school difficult? The process of getting into Ballet school is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. The competition is so high. I was competing against the best of the best from all over the world. The audition process lasted about 4 months in total, where I had to keep jetting off to the UK from Dubai, for auditions all over England. Then there were call backs which took a long time as well. During the actual auditions where I was dancing, my nerves seemed to melt away as I concentrated on what I was doing and just enjoyed the dance. However as soon as I got out, and thought about what I had done, the waiting process was unbearable. Even though I had done many ballet summer camps to prepare for these auditions, nothing could have really prepared me for what it was really like. How is a Ballet School different to a normal educational secondary school? In a typical day at ballet school, you start early by warming up, and then train all day, and finish with a cool down stretching class. Typical classes include things like Pilates and strengthening classes, as well as your normal ballet/ contemporary/jazz dance classes. At the end of the 3-year course at the Northern Ballet School, I will have received a Diploma in professional dance, which is an NVQ Level 6. This qualification is the equivalent of a first degree from University. I will not be studying subjects such as maths or science, instead I will be focusing on my passion which is dance. I will however study subjects like the anatomy of a dancer, music in relation to dance, performance psychology, nutrition and health. The dance industry is known to be very competitive and hard, as well as the constant battle to remain fit. How do you plan to cope with the pressure? I guess I will just stay focused on why I am dancing. I think that if people get too caught up on the business side of things and the competition, they lose sight as to why they started dancing in the first place. I dance because I love it and I don’t want that to change. I’ve always been blessed with amazing support from my family and friends, so I know they’ll always be there to help me when things get tough. I think a positive mindset is also crucial. Do you have any tips for aspiring ballerinas or dancers in the UAE who want to become professional like you? Keep pushing through. Every opportunity you get to dance, take it! You have to push yourself and check out other competition in the world. It is so easy to get caught up in the bubble of Dubai, which is often very cushioned and protected. One famous quote that has always been in my mind is “Pain is temporary, but quitting lasts forever”. There are also some amazing summer schools worldwide, which I found very useful. This is because it enabled me to see what the competition is like elsewhere and gave me a standard to aspire to reach. I recommend that anyone who wants to go into full-time dance training, to check out these summer schools. I personally went to Summer schools in England such as ‘Elmhurst’, ‘Bird College’, ‘English National Ballet School’, ‘Northern Ballet Academy’, ‘Central Ballet School’, and ‘Royal Academy of dance’. However there are some excellent ones all over the world.
What is the hardest thing about dancing on a daily basis at a professional level? The hardest thing I guess would be to keep your motivation up, as it is so physically and mentally demanding. You’re exhausted all the time, so you have to find the energy from somewhere to keep going! Apart from dancing, do you have any other hobbies? Yes, I enjoy taking part in sports such as netball and water polo. I find that music compliments dance very well and I recently competed my piano ABRSM grade 6 exam. For me piano is a great way to relax after spending the day working and dancing. During my time in Dubai, I took part in a number of stage productions as I find that drama and dance link quite well. What is your favourite Ballet? My absolute favourite ballet has to be ‘The Nutcracker’. I have been watching it since I was a little girl and will never grow tired of it. Do you have any role models that have inspired you? My biggest role model is my ballet teacher, Lara Cadenhouse-Beaty, who has been teaching me for about 4 years now. She also went to the Northern Ballet School when she was my age and she was very successful there. I have seen videos of her career as a dancer and they left me in awe. Therefore as someone who is going down the same career route as her, I find her very inspiring.
“I dance because I love it and I don’t want that to change. ”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? My dream is to be in London, touring with a dance company. I would love to be a part of the major classical Ballets, such as ‘Swan Lake’ and ‘Giselle’ as well as trying some more modern choreography such as the works of Merce Cunningham.

Perspective by
FARAH HAMDY
Growing up, I used to hear my mum say that happiness is a choice, she’d never elaborate on that and when I’d ask what she meant, she’d say that in time I’ll figure it out alone. I’d spend hours, at times days, trying to make sense of what she meant. And as I grew older that statement began to irritate me, I’d rage at her sometimes for saying that, because if happiness was really a choice why would anyone chose to be unhappy? If it was that easy, why isn’t everyone full of joys of spring?! Although I had my many doubts about that statement, she was a living proof of its validity; she was always smiling or laughing. Nothing could ever let her down, and as cheesy as this reads, the only tears I’ve ever seen her cry were tears of joy. Watching her being the way she was, I was constantly confused. Confused by the fact that no rainy storm could ever put her down. She always saw things in an entirely different perspective than that of everyone else. She saw every obstacle as an opportunity, every misfortune as a test. She seemed to have enough problems to keep an entire population in distress for a life time. Yet, she CHOSE to be happy. She’d look forward to the weirdest things sometimes. Colds, for example, that put everyone in bad moods only augmented her spirits. She’d say, “There’s no better feeling than that of getting better after a bad cold”. The older I got the more skeptic I became about what I believed was just a theory. Until one day, I guess it sort of hit me. Walking by a fishing harbor in Alexandria at sunset, I stopped to take a picture of a fisherman whose old age was well manifested by the wrinkles that covered every inch of his face. He seemed too old for the kind of job he was doing. After I took as many pictures as my camera memory could allow, I sat down next to him to watch as the sun sank in the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea, spreading its colors over the now pink sky. When the sun was completely submerged in the water I was surprised by the man whispering, almost as if to himself, “I must be the luckiest man on earth to be able to see such a beautiful miracle, everyday”. It was then when I had an epiphany. It suddenly all made sense. This old man, worked 12 hours in the scorching sun, doing work that his body was obviously no longer fit for, yet he considered himself “the luckiest man on earth”. He chose to look at his job from a different perspective; to consider himself a lucky man for just being able to watch the sunset every day. Like everyone else’s the fisherman’s life is by no means perfect, and if happiness was measured by how perfect our lives are then the fisherman would be one of the saddest people on earth. For no one is given a full glass but choosing to look at it as half full or half empty is almost the only thing that matters.

Gizmos & Gadgets by ANTON RODIONOV
It’s September and we are all back to school, uni or work (for some). In 2012 it’s not cool to have a massive laptop anymore, nor is it anywhere near “convenient”. We’ve done some looking around and here is what we’ve got under “productive” and “mobile”.
MICROSOFT SURFACE Meet Surface - the first Microsoftproduced tablet unveiled in July, running Windows 8. According to the giant from Redmond, this is the first tablet to run a full desktop operating system in a body of a tablet. In typical Microsoft tradition, Surface will come in a number of configurations: RT and Pro formats, with former running on an NVIDIA ARM architecture and latter on Intel i5 (Ivy Bridge). The basic difference is the Pro will be thicker, run Intel apps and be more of a computer while RT will have less apps at first but a supposedly better battery life. For now, only time will tell. Oh, and one more thing, there is a magnetic keyboard that attaches itself to the tablet and works just like a regular keyboard - that’s some creative industrial design.
MACBOOK PRO WITH RETINA DISPLAY This laptop is Apple’s biggest leap in portable professional computer design and display technologies to date. Just at 1.8cm thin, this 15” laptop is the slimmest powerhouse, packing up to 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz), up to 768GB of flash storage, up to 16 GB of RAM and an incredible display of 2880x1800 pixels. Apart from all the mentioned glory, this Macbook Pro features a monitor with a minimum glare, an engineering marvel- Apple has removed the protective glass layer and molded the display into the aluminium shell, resulting in a picture-perfect display. Now, not everything is perfect and there are some things few of you won’t like. There is no more CD drive, which means Apple has officially decided that our beloved CD is a thing of the past. Same goes for FireWire and Ethernet - gone too soon? Not for Apple, as it seems. On the positive note, though, for the first time in MacBooks history, an HDMI port, two USB 3 ports along with two Thunderbolt ports have made it to the final release - making it the new era port euphoria in one thin aluminium box, giving the users an option to transfer files at the speeds of 5 to 10 Gbps. Finally, the cost, here is where this piece comes short. Macbook Pro with Retina display will set you back by at least AED 8,999. Is it worth it? Definitely! As with all Apple offerings, the price is right for the time their machines last and the minimum worry they come with.
GOOGLE NEXUS 7 Finally, a stock Google tablet as fresh and pure as it can get. This is the first of the Nexus series tablets, sporting Google’s latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS. Manufactured by ASUS, this 7” tablet feels premium due to the materials used; it uses a leather-rubbery like material at the back, providing this device with a nice touch and scratch-resistant future. The specs are pretty impressive: Tegra 3 processor with 1GB of RAM, 1.2 MPixel front-facing camera, 1280x800 IPS display, and 8 or 16 GB storage options. On the software side, Android Jelly Bean is Android at its best. It is not much different from the Ice Cream Sandwich on the looks side, however it is much better when it comes to stuff like Notification Center or overall smoothness of the operations. Additionally, Google is going out with a proper Siri competitor - Google Now. Apart from doing basics like global voice search and general info requests, Google Now learns (over time) your routine and eventually is able to predict (in a sense) what you are going to do next. For instance, it can tell you whether there will be traffic on your way to work or uni. Finally, it is much faster than Siri at pulling up results off the net. Overall, this tablet is a bargain. Once released in this part of the world, Nexus 7 should be cheaper than the low-end iPad, while still packing an impressive set of features as well as the purest Android experience money can buy.

WHY WE BROKE UP by Daniel Handler So it’s summer… That gives us, young people, a lot of time to do anything we want. Somewhere in the endless list of possibilities lays the option of reading. So a trip I love to make when I have this time on my hands is to the nearest bookstore; where I can sip a smoothie and search for a book to get lost in. Well, sip and search I did! The result: this novel, “Why We Broke Up” by Daniel Handler. Now, before you abandon this recommendation based upon the title (which could be mistaken for the title of a teen fiction that is relatively devoid of special qualities), let me explain to you why this book is so different. The beautifully illustrated book is a letter from a girl to a boy… accompanied by a box of items. Each item tells a chapter of their magnificent story: how they met, fell in love and ultimately broke up. This story is for any young adult; especially the ones who have fallen incredibly hard for somebody and had their hearts broken. review by

THE PAINTED MAN by Peter V. Brett This novel is set in a world plagued by the attacks of demons known as corelings, which rise from the planet’s core each night to feast upon humans. People live in perpetual fear and refuse to fight these beings even after losing their families and livelihoods. However, our young protagonist, Arlen Bales sees things differently, and begins his journey to free humanity from this plague. Initially, this novel reprises the run-of-the-mill gallant tale of a brave young hero. However, as the novel progresses, Brett recaptures the readers’ attention by introducing new characters that face Corelings in different ways. Possibly the most intriguing part of the story is the transformation of Arlen into something less than human. This series is definitely worth reading and I suggest you read it before the movie comes out. The movie will be created by the producer-director duo of the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise. review by

Deama Hatahet ARTIST
An artistic creation is nothing without its artist. For the artist polishes it with that confidence it needs to shine, passes on to it that unique vibe every piece of work is meant to emit, provides it with that message that gives it meaning and importance. Symbiotically, an artist gains confidence from his creations emits his vibe through his work and delivers his message through his art. Thus an artistic creation and an artist reflect one another. A living example of this relation is the lovely Deama Hatahet and her fabulous art.
Cheerful, vibrant and energetic, Deama is a true reflection of her colorful art. A pleasantly confident young lady that conveys her confidence through her art and also through the way that she dresses. “Along with my art, I like to express myself through my clothes” , says Deama, “and I love colors; I include colors in my clothes and of course in my art too”. Influenced by the very flamboyant Psychedelic art style, there is no way Deama cannot use colors in her work. When I first asked Deama about what Psychedelic art was, she explained that it is a form of art that emerged in the late 60’s mainly influenced by hallucinations induced by drugs. Seeing me shocked by the explanation, Deema laughed loudly and rushed to explain that she “wasn’t into drugs or that kind of thing” and that she was just interested in the style of art itself. Along with being very colorful and vibrant, psychedelic art is also very abstract, one of the key factors that attracted Deama to it. “My style of drawing is mainly abstract; I like my paintings to have openendings so that different people interpret different things.”
“I’m inspired by many things; sometimes I’d be staring at the wall and an idea just comes to me, or at times, but don’t laugh, I get ideas in my dreams.” 45
Deama graduated from The University of Sharjah with a BA degree in Graphic design and Multimedia. One of her projects focused on twelve of the most endangered species in the UAE region. The project consisted of calendars, post cards and a set of illustrations that featured the species. This project has been especially exciting for Deama as she is highly interested in animal illustrations and this project has allowed her to explore her full potential in this field. When I exclaimed at how adorable and innocent looking the animal illustrations were, she said that she tried to make them look as cute as possible for people to sympathize with the cause and take action. This project gained wide local acclaim and was featured in Kul Al Usra magazine. Like many of her other projects and works this particular one was influenced by nature, this environmental theme however is not her only source of inspiration. “I’m inspired by many things; sometimes I’d be staring at the wall and an idea just comes to me, or at times, but don’t laugh, I get ideas in my dreams”. Elaborating on that, Deama said “drawing is my outlet of self-expression; it’s as personal to me as songwriting is for some people”. Like every aspiring artist Deama is also inspired by certain people; one of whom is the psychedelic artist Max Payne, however she made a point of mentioning more than once, that she’s inspired not only by artists but by anyone with a cause. “I’m inspired by people like Coco Chanel that were themselves all the way, that dreamt and aspired and got their ways in the end, if it wasn’t for her, me and you wouldn’t be wearing pants today!”, exclaims Deama. Most young artists have huge dreams and aspirations regarding their futures in the art field, Deama however has different kinds of dreams; “Of course, I want to accelerate in this field but honestly it doesn’t really matter what I’m doing as long as I’m causing a good change”. With her ideas fresh, her hopes high, and the world as her canvas there’s no limit to the amount of change Deama and her likes can cause.

Hot Challenge

Bikram Yoga - the type of Yoga almost every celebrity and fitness guru has raved about. A 90-minute session which involves 26 postures performed in a room heated to a temperature of 40째C. one8one just had to visit the brand new Bikram Yoga studio now open in Dubai, franchised from the original studio in the US; we called in some of our readers for a session to try out this hot work out. Here is what they had to say:
clara lacroix 47
I decided to give Bikram Yoga a try because I had always been a little curious about what it was and why everyone loves it so much! It turned out to be unlike anything I had ever done. Only 15 minutes had passed and I felt like I had been in the hot room for way more than that. I started to feel uncomfortable about halfway through the class so I had to sit out for a little bit, but I eventually came back and continued until the end of the class. It is an activity which would definitely take some time to get used to but with more experience, I believe that I will be able to get the most out of it.

While interning for on8one I had my first yoga experience not just plain Yoga but Bikram Yoga. I never thought doing Yoga could be challenging but as soon as I entered the heated studio, which was heated to 40째C with humidity of 40%, I realized that completing the 90 minutes class would be a difficult task. The class initially began with a breathing exercise and soon we were doing some difficult postures. Some of them were so difficult I was not able to perform them. After the class my muscles hurt badly but the pain went away and I felt pretty good. Overall the experience was rejuvenating.
I found the class quite challenging. Due to my lack of flexibility as well as balance, it made for a hard, as well as amusing class. The exercises we did tested the strength of my muscles, as well as my ability to overcome a challenge. By the end of the class I was exhausted, I did not think I would be able to walk for a few days. However, once the class was over, I felt fresh and energized. It was a good experience.
Rose dolan It was an interesting experience, however, the heat was rather intense and therefore made it quite uncomfortable. I would recommend it to people that have an interest in yoga but for a first time yoga class it was quite extreme and sweaty.
48
Whitney Khan Bikram was a whole new experience for me, I’ve done yoga before however this was completely different. At times during the work out you do begin to feel slightly fatigued from the overwhelming heat and that is the difficult part of Bikram. Shortly after the class, however, I felt good and the heat didn’t affect me so much. The yoga positions were not hard at all and it didn’t matter if you were flexible or not; this was good because I’ve never really been flexible therefore I’ve never enjoyed yoga and been able to experience the tranquil and relaxing feeling you get from it. At the end of the class I felt refreshed and relaxed, my skin felt soft and I felt better about my body. To me it was sort of like a detox class because my body got rid of all the filth and bad stuff including stress that had been building up for a couple of months.

Letters to a Coach Get advice from our life coach Maria Chatila. Write to her at coach@one8one.net. All writing will remain anonymous.
Q.
My home is a shrieking shack. My mother shouts and yells all the time. She is loud and hyper and I fear that I`ve become like her. I have started to scream and shout at even the smallest of things (though not in public) and sometimes I cannot control my anger at all.
Maria V. Chatila is presently living in Dubai with her husband and three children. She works as an Education & Relationship Life Coach. She is dedicated to helping schools, families, couples and individuals to build personal and family awareness, while creating empowering relationships. Maria has given talks and workshops to groups and also works privately with clients.
Loud The first question that came to my mind when I read your question was; “Does mum shout only in anger?” I will assume, based on the context of your fear that she does. My concern for you both is, ‘what drives her to be so angry that she feels her only method for communication is to shout?’ My suggestion is that you sit down with your mother and ask that question. Timing is vital. Don’t open this discussion when she is triggered and angry. Invite her out for a tea/coffee. Go somewhere with a relaxed atmosphere and start the conversation with an appreciation of your mother. Doing this first will soften the atmosphere and let her feel safe with you. Next, share with her that the communication at home is one of people shouting. Ask her why she feels the need to use this method. Listen to her for understanding and don’t take it personal. Once you’ve finished, share with your mum that you too have begun shouting to communicate. Ask her for support. She will have wonderful insights to share with you, I am sure. Be open to her suggestions. Finally, discuss how you can communicate with each other more effectively. Create a plan to meet regularly to discuss your relationship together. Recreate your environment at home with your mother so that you both feel heard and acknowledged.
Q.I am the only child of my parents and
they love me very much. They always dreamt of seeing me as a doctor but I hate studying biology and don’t want to pursue a career in medicine. My problem is that I can’t hurt my parents feelings.
The only one It is both wonderful and challenging to be an only child. The attention is readily available, and there are no siblings to compete with. On the other hand, being an only child means that the ‘attention’ is always on you. Parental hopes and expectations can weigh heavy on an only child. Often ‘only children’, such as yourself, feel like they don’t want to disappoint and hurt their parents. As noble as this may seem, in the long run, this behaviour leads the child to become unhappy and unfulfilled in their careers and their relationships. My suggestion for you is to sit down with your parents and share how you feel with them. Let them visit “YOUR LAND”. Introduce them to your hopes and aspirations. Walk them through your vision for your future. Discuss with them the subjects that you must enjoy and the possibilities that lay ahead for you. At the core, parents want the best for their children. Reach out to them and educate them about the various careers that interest you. Share success stories about individuals in those careers.
Boring job Congratulations for graduating and for getting a job in your field of study. In the current economy, this is quite the achievement. The wonderful thing about education is that it prepares students for the theory but not for the practical aspects of life and the work-force. The only way to gain life/work experience is by living it. My suggestions for you are very simple. I encourage you to elicit your core values. Find out what is important to you. Then, compare them to the values of your organisation. The purpose of this exercise is to see if there is an alignment between your work and your life values. If there is an alignemtn, then changing your perception of your new life is vital. Change the belief that work is ‘boring & repitive’ to ‘what can I do at work today that fulfils my value of xxxx or what have I done today that fulfilled my value of xxxx.‘ We are responsible for creating our lives and falling victim to the belief that work is boring and repetivite just encourages helpless behaviour.
Q. I’ve just recently graduated from
university and got a job at a big company but I hate every bit of it. I keep wondering why universities give us such false impressions about the working world. It’s boring, repetitive and if you don’t have a high position you end up doing everything your manager doesn’t want to do themselves. If I leave my parents will be very disappointed because it is a very big and good company. What I want to know is is all work like that? Will it be this boring even if I get another job too?
On another note, I want to normalise the transition that you are in right now. You went from being a carefree, enthusiastic student, to being an employed individual very quickly. Change like this is challenging sometimes, but it helps us to grow. Give yourself the time to adapt to your new enviorment. Baby steps..... Finally, our experiences of work are relative to our expectiations of what work means to us. If you feel unfulfilled at work, find a new place of employment that serves you better or create the environment at work that serves your values. There is a famous saying, ‘if you do something that you love then you’ll never work a day in your life’. Enjoy your journey and remember that you have the skills to create a better world, the only challenge you have is the one that you create in your mind.
Facebook disaster Dear Friend in-Need,
Q. Hi. I’m in a gigantic muddle, this may
seem like a ‘ughhhh. next!’ type of problem but it’s really important to me, it’s about me and my friends. I was chatting to one of my best friends on Facebook and I went to the bathroom for like 2 minutes, when I came back my friend was like saying really random weird things to me and I got really confused and I didn’t know what was happening, so I scrolled back up and found that my cousin had Facebook hacked me and wrote really horrible mean stuff The reality of the situation is that your friends are wounded and they are reacting to to my friend. I tried to explain to her that your cousin’s misbehaviour. Though their reactions may be hurtful towards you, your it wasn’t me and it was my cousin, at first friends need time to heal. Give them space and if they were true friends then they will return to you and your friendship will move on. If they weren’t true friends then you are she didn’t believe me after some more explaining she did, but of course my friend better off without them. had already told my other friends what my cousin had said saying it was me (because Friend-In-Need, the actions were done and feeling sorry for yourself won’t help you. at the time she had absolutely no clue it Learn from this experience. Grow from this experience. was my cousin) and forgot to tell them that someone had Facebook hacked me. My suggestions are: So at school my friends were ignoring me 1. Write a status apology to your friends. Clarify the incident and let them know that you and they were being really cold and I just didn’t know what to do. I tried to explain to are deeply hurt to know that the hacker wounded them. 2. Sit down with your cousin, (if she is a minor then include her parents as well), discuss my friends it wasn’t me and that it was all a misunderstanding but all they kept on the consequences of her actions. Ask her why she did it and share with her the hurt saying was “HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT TO that you are feeling as a result of her actions. HER!!” “I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU SAID THAT. 3. You’ve apologised to your friend. Let it go and know that in your heart you are sorry YOU CAN’T JUST EXPECT HER TO FORGIVE for her pain. 4. Change your Facebook password often and don’t use the account on anyone else’s PC. YOU LIKE THAT!” 5. With the exception of your parents, never share your password with anyone....even So as you can see the problem I’m facing is your relatives ;) kind of horrible: All my friends are turning 6. Finally, as a rule of thumb, only post pictures and comments that you would share with your grand-mother. If she wouldn’t approve, then chances are high that they are against me, I’ve turned into the bad guy and I’m really upset. I just want them to believe unacceptable. me but they don’t. Please help! What should I do? Thank you for sharing your issue. Questions like this not only help you, but they also help all of the readers as well. A couple of red flags came to mind when I read your letter. Firstly, your privacy was violated by your cousin. Not only did she invade your account, but she also tarnished the respect you had amongst your peers and hurt the feelings of your friend. Your cousin’s behaviour was both unacceptable and unethical. Although you didn’t mention either of your ages, I am imagining that her immaturity proves that she is too young to be responsible enough to use social networking sites such as Facebook.

Giving Red Blood donation is a noble act that can save many lives; one in four people who enter hospitals in the UAE need blood transfusions. Giving blood is not only a great way to help others in need; it will also make you feel very good about yourself. One unit of blood can save up to three lives. The blood can be divided into several components (red blood cells, plasma, and platelets) which go towards helping patients with different ailments such as anemia, haemophilia, and many types of cancer. Blood is made up of three main components that serve various purposes. by
NIKITA BALA
Red blood cells give blood its colour and makes up for 40% of its volume. The main function of RBCs is to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the cells. They have a shelf life of 42 days when they are stored in refrigeration. Transfusions of red blood cells are used to treat people with severe anemia, those who experience severe bleeding (such as accident victims) and those whose red blood cells do not function adequately. Plasma is the straw coloured liquid that makes up the rest of the blood. It contains very important nutrients and clotting factors that are vital to a person’s health. Three litres out of the five litres of blood in an average adult’s body is made up of plasma, which can be divided into 17 different products. It can be stored frozen for up to 12 months and can assist patients with life-threatening conditions and haemophilia. Platelets assist in the blood clotting process. They are tiny fragmented cells that prevent blood loss by covering up tears in blood vessels. They can only last up to 5 days and so it is vital that they are donated frequently. Platelets are primarily used to treat cancer patients; diseases such as leukemia and medical treatments such as chemotherapy lower platelet counts and this can cause spontaneous bleeding which is dangerous and possibly fatal (if it occurs in the brain).
Know your blood type Although everyone has the same components in their blood, the presence of A and B antigens (substances that can trigger immune responses) decides what blood type a person has. Knowing your blood type is vital, not only in case of emergencies, but also because it helps determine which type of donation is the best use of your blood.
Group A
Group B
Group AB
Group O
Blood has only the A antigen. The need for type A whole blood and plasma/platelets is always high, and so it is useful to donate as often as possible.
Blood has only the B antigen. The most useful component in type B blood is the plasma, as it can go towards helping burn victims and people with severe diseases.
Blood has both A and B antigens. AB plasma can be given to any patient, regardless of blood type, and is always in high demand.
Blood has neither A nor B antigens. People with O positive/negative are most common and so all donations are valuable.
Blood donation guide Before you donate: • Eat lots of salty or savoury food in the 12 hours before the donation. • Drink at least three glasses of water in the 3 hours before donating. • Keep identification and any obligatory forms ready; suitable ID includes your full name, date of birth, a photo, and your signature. On the day: • Make sure you have at least 60 minutes free for the whole blood donation process; this includes preparation, donation, and resting time. • If you are donating plasma or platelets, the donation itself takes 45 minutes so the whole process can take up to 1.5 hours. • Don’t hesitate to ask the nurses any question have concerns or experience discomforts. After donation: • Immediately after donation, you should rest for 2-5 minutes on the chair itself. •Replenish yourself with water/fruit juice and salty food; many blood donation centres have accessible refreshment areas. • Drink at least three full glasses of water in the 6 hours after donation. • Avoid strenuous exercise such as jogging, going to the gym, or biking. • Contact the blood donation centre if you feel at all unwell. • Make your next appointment; whole blood donors can donate every 12 weeks and plasma/platelet donors can donate every 2-3 weeks.
Where to donate blood There are various blood donation centres around the country, it’s best to find the one closest to you so that you can access it if they call with an emergency.

This month you will see more of your friends after a long summer holiday but some of them will have changed quite a lot. Keep the friends you like and don’t worry about the rest. There will be a lot of studying involved this month and loads of adjustments. You may want to give yourself some time alone to reflect, plan and set goals for your future.
Loads of heated discussions to match the UAE weather. Just know that you are in charge of your emotions. The “I want it now” attitude will get you nowhere so just do what you believe is necessary to get to the end result. Be sensible and listen to other people’s advice because when you’re passionate about what you do you may see things differently.
Pressures and challenges are on your daily list. Everything will become super fast but exciting and stressful at the same time. Try and keep track of time and never over promise or overbook yourself. Keep visualizing your goal and you will just happen to be in the right place at the right time. You will hear lots of stories from friends, don’t repeat them unless you’ve double checked that they are true.
You are relaxed emotionally and nothing can bother you. You like receiving information this month and listen attentively. If you have a dream start acting on it; take it step by step and you will reach there eventually. You have the courage to take action so what are you waiting for? You need a change of scenery when it comes to physical activity. Try the outdoors.

You will be in a very good mood this month and always feel like having fun. This is a very rare time in your life where money will matter more than fame and glory and you will need to work hard to get what you want.
This month everyone is attracted to your personality. You make people feel secure and show them that you are trustworthy. You will start noticing this and as you do, you will perfect your skills of charm. There is a little instability this month and confusion with all that is happening around you. You may need to lower your expectations a little.
September will bring many new things to you. Things that are unusual, exciting and challenging at the same time. Focus on the present and the positive. Go out with friends more often and try and catch their positive vibes. You will make some kind of investment this month; spiritual or financial. A good friend of yours that lives far away may contact you this month.
Strong emotions take hold of you this month and make you act out on impulse which is not always a good thing. You will be torn between work or studies and your social life. Be objective and build a strategy to your daily routine according to the goals you want to reach. You will have the opportunity to stand out so take it because you’re great and you know that all of your friends will support you.

Your friends will always be around you this month and help you evolve in ways you never thought possible. You will have some minor frustrations but nothing to worry about. You are a very strong person and have admirable leadership and organization skills. You are up for a promotion, a prize or a surprise. Learn something new this month, the information may come in handy.
Back to analyzing everything which you tend to be good at. You will analyze everything and then get rid of the bad and keep the good. Your emotions will be intense this month. This will be the last month of hard work and sacrifices. Everything will become much easier after that and the rest of the year ahead will be wonderful and you will be able to do whatever you want. Make a summary of the lessons you have learnt.
This is a great month to make new friends, refresh old relationships and try to fix broken ones. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. You will want to measure your accomplishments this month and see what you’ve been capable of and what lies ahead. You may want to review your long term goals and see whether your ambitions have changed.
It is quite hot but make sure you’re enjoying the sun, don’t hide away from it all the time. You will accomplish many things which will effect everyone around you but all will be done by chance. Make sure you work on your communication skills to add to your existing skill set. You will then be able to convince and move people the way you want them to. If there is a chance to do a group project, take it.

You send in your articles, we read them, choose the best ones and publish them in the magazine. If you get published, you have a chance to win loads of cool stuff and represent one8one at major concerts happening in the UAE. You will get media passes to the events and an amazing camera to take pictures. You’ll have a blast at the concert then write about it for one8one. Which concert did you say you’ve always wanted to go to? Send your work in to: mysay@one8one.net. Only the crème de la crème of the work we’re sent makes it on to the pages of our magazine so put your best foot forward and get writing.
