MEET OUR FASHION EDITOR
MF I’m a sophomore at the American School of Dubai. I wrote an article for our school newspaper and my teacher suggested that I submit it in your magazine.
PM SA I’d like to write for your magazine and I plan on doing it this summer. So how, when and where will I get my internship? Please tell me all the details. If you are interested in an internship at one8one this summer please email us at mysay@one8one.net. We will then provide you with a form you would need to fill out, then an interview is scheduled and you begin. Internships last a minimum of 2 weeks and maximum of 2 months through June and July. You do not have to be an intern to be a part of one8one. You call always submit your articles to mysay@one8one.net. There are no deadlines and you can write about anything you like from wherever you like. We look forward to hearing from you.
I’m a student at Al Yasmina School. I love to write and I am very good at it too. In fact, I am currently working on a book with other young writers which is about to be published. :) I would love to have an internship at One8One as I love reading your magazine. It’s one of those rare things you really don’t get around here: a magazine for teens. I would love to help out with book reviews (I’m an avid reader :P), film reviews, random stuff, you name it. :D SA I want to be a model because I love fashion and clothes. I also want to show youth my age that they don’t have to be conscious about their looks and body. They can be beautiful without being size 0.
Louisa Northcote I wouldn’t consider myself your average teenager as I basically live my life around fashion! I am a model and have been modelling for a few years, I have had the pleasure to work for the likes of Ted Baker, Philip Lim and actually do a photo shoot with famous shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti in the flesh. To add to that I am a dancer and a blogger; my blog is www.vintagerunways.blogspot. com and has now been going for seven months and I have already reached over 90,000 views, been nominated for an award, been invited to many events, met many celebrities and got featured in many magazines. If that’s not enough I now have one more exciting thing to add to my resume and that is Fashion Editor for this great magazine! Blogging really gives me the freedom to splurge my opinion out to my readers about myself, my style and all the things I get up to. However, now being Fashion Editor I can splurge my opinion about fashion on pages for you all to read. Fashion makes you the canvas and all you have to do is paint a picture with the things you chose. I look forward to you all reading my pages and I hope you like the fashion I choose!

Ramadan The Special Feeling of Ramadan Ramadan brings out a special feeling of emotional excitement among Muslims. People gladly embrace the opportunity to double all their rewards in life. There is a feeling of great closeness within the community when Muslims have to change their whole physical and emotional selves. A typical day in the life of a Muslim during Ramadan 4:30AM: Rise and have a meal called Sahur together with the family. Fasting begins at dawn. As dawn breaks, the Muslim prays the Fajr prayer. Eid al Fitr (Aug19-22)
As the day progresses their stomachs are constantly bombarding their brains with messages of hunger, and each time they are reminded of how lucky they are to have food on their table and begin to feel the suffering of the less fortunate. There is a sense of appreciation for everything that you usually take for granted. Two other prayers are offered during the early and late afternoon. During this month, and every day, Muslims do their best to help the needy and provide all the mosques with food where the less fortunate can have their meals. The fast is broken at sunset and the meal begins with a couple of dates and a glass of water. Then a prayer is offered before the main meal, which is usually shared with friends and family; this meal is called the Iftar. At night another prayer is offered and people usually go to the mosque.

KHALIFA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS DESIGN BUSINESS PROPOSALS Twenty-six Khalifa University students have concluded their participation in the X-Culture project, which saw 1,600 students from 44 universities in 29 countries around the world work in teams to design business plans for submission to major international companies such as McDonald’s, British Petroleum, Disney, HSBC, Toyota, Google Inc. and others. The University of North Carolina awarded certificates to the students in a ceremony held at Khalifa University’s Abu Dhabi campus. The project was part of the Principles of Management course offered at Khalifa University. Zayed University and the American University of Sharjah also participated in the project. Khalifa University students were the only engineering students who participated in this unique program.

FUN OVERDOSE WITH TEEN CLUB CULTURE AT ATLANTIS Club Rush Atlantis. “Sounds interesting,” I thought. Then I remembered I was there a few years back and I said, “Hey, lets go.” That night, however, was going to be a wee bit different. After spending the day at Atlantis, courtesy of Teen Club Culture, we were invited to a rather interesting evening at the club. Before the main event started there was a magician who started a mild fire hazard by spontaneously igniting his cigarette, which he then made disappear into his eye… that he spat out. Of course that wasn’t enough, and he started producing birds from thin air and spraying previously non-existent confetti on everyone. There were the classic three ring tricks, which I still think defy the laws of physics. I voiced my opinion that this was physically impossible and was told to hush and believe in the magic. I’m 17.

HEINRICH TAUTE
While we were all questioning the laws of physics after the magic show finished, classic comedian and Virgin Radio DJ Brent Black turned up. There was a gladiator arena next to the dance floor and DJ Brent encouraged us to beat each other with large inflatable objects! Of course, he was all for watching and encouraged us to get into the arena until eventually somebody noticed that we needed a few minor rules before somebody fell out of the arena. We cheated, naturally. Brent herded us all into the dance room where we actually engaged in a live singing contest. The winning song being “Jar Of Hearts” sung by a 13 year old. It was very well sung; I started crying and so did Brent. Prizes included dog tags and a very cool stress ball which I desperately needed, but hey, I can’t sing. When we finished our singing contest we went to the bar where with a magical lady created smoothies in every colour imaginable. I eventually started to get annoyed by her seemingly magical ability and began to challenge her skill. I gave up when she said she could make me a yellow grape smoothie. Magic. I swear it was magic. We ate some nachos, danced a little more, and then Brent and I decided we needed a photo moment. We got one of those massive decorative glasses at the top of the bar and made the club’s biggest, brightest smoothie ever! Electric Blue. Because I was told this smoothie sorcery didn’t involve food colouring, I asked, “What did you put in here to make it blue?” The reply will haunt my dreams forever. They use Smurfs.
BSAK STUDENTS WIN NYAD SCHOLARSHIPS Five Emirati students from the British School Al Khubairat have been selected to receive New York University Abu Dhabi’s prestigious 2012 Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarship for Outstanding High School Students. DUBAI COLLEGE STUDENT CLIMBS MOUNT EVEREST Very few achievements can be greater than standing on top of the world but Dubai College alumnus Leanne Shuttleworth has done just that! Leanne, who has spent the last year scaling the highest peaks on the planet, enjoyed her crowning glory when she reached the summit of Mt Everest, accompanied by her father Mark, at approximately 5AM UAE time on Sunday, May 20. Leanne and her dad spent two minutes at the top before commencing their descent.

ABRACADABRA KAZAM! We arrived at the Byblos Hotel, and waited for our magic wands as we anticipated the witchcraft the night held. The place was magnificently done in terms of decoration. The atmosphere was just right, medieval music, antique wood, and buff, tall door attendants. There were three PS3s showcasing Sorcery and they were surprisingly enough. When I was trying out the game, I was pretty overwhelmed by the noticeable precision of the PlayStation Eye. Whether you were performing basic attacks on enemies with repetitive gestures, or chugging down a potion, it accurately detects it all. It really showed the potential of the PlayStation Move. There were different shows during the media event as well, including the interactive play in which the elder sorcerer trained us in preparation for the greater confrontation. We were proudly wearing our Sorcery robes and waving our magic wands as we subdued the nightmare queen; it was quite a nice feeling of unity. Since we spent a good amount of time exploring the different defensive techniques and magical phrases that help protect us from the sinister nightmare queen, it felt rather silly to enunciate the typical abracadabra phrase. Oh! And of course, the lovely buffet that was set up served exquisitely delicious food. by

HAVE YOU MET TED?
Photo: Angeli Castillo by
angeli castillo
As I was walking inside the grand exhibition center, ADNEC, I was contemplating on just how much Abu Dhabi has grown and how TEDx AbuDhabi is a great way to bring an intelligent crowd together under one roof to further educate ourselves with everything that goes on here. TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) is a global set of conferences curated by the American private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate “ideas worth spreading”. The speakers of the day not only filled our souls with laughter and enlightened our hearts, they also enriched our minds – all 11 speakers brought about a culmination of topics varying from myths of a modern workplace to feeding the future, personal stories, music to neuroscience. Here we learned how hydro-gel can sustain plant life as explained by the co-founders of Agricel, how wearing a certain outfit should not be a cause of limitation to ones own identity and how kids should never accept candies from a stranger. Live performance and short films were displayed; it’s a shame the event didn’t go on longer, but hopefully after such an inspirational conference everyone went back home each with a story of its own, and maybe each with an idea definitely worth spreading.
AUS STUDENTS RAISE MONEY FOR ORPHANS The Dean’s Business Team at the School of Business and Management (SBM) at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) held a charity bake sale on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 to collect donations for orphans. Sponsored by Tasty Image, Tim Horton’s, Yogurberry, Kitsch Cupcakes and Krispy Kreme, the sale was organized to collect donations to assist orphans in the UAE. The tag line of the event was “Eat, Smile, Give” and called on people to eat their favourite delights, share smiles and fun with friends, and give the underprivileged members of the community a reason to smile. In additional to delicacies from the official sponsors of the event, there were other treats to be enjoyed from other brands in the UAE. Proceeds for this event were donated to Dubai Cares, whose representatives presented a certificate to the Dean’s Business Team.
PETROLEUM INSTITUTE STUDENTS VISIT MALAYSIA In the Spring mid-semester break two groups of Petroleum Institute students, accompanied by faculty members, flew to Malaysia for seven days. The main purpose of the trip was to visit a similar institution -Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) at Bandar Seri Iskandar. The PI students were at UTP for a day and a half, and were given a tour of the university, including the laboratories, after which they were free to wander around the 100-hectare site, chatting with UTP students. Other high points of the Malaysian visit were the boat trips to offshore islands, the mangrove tour that included an exploration of a geologically interesting bat cave, active beach sports, shopping in Kuala Lumpur and a visit to a local world record holder. Mr Osman made it into the Guinness Book of Records for staying locked up with 150 cobras for twenty-seven days a few years ago.

SOMEBODY TO LOVE by Kristan Higgins A florist’s assistant is the main character of Somebody to Love by Kristan Higgins, but who she really is, the reader does not know and neither does she. The story is about a young woman and single mom named Parker Welles whose father loses the family fortune, and she is required to travel to Gideon’s Cove, Maine, to sell her last asset - a worn and torn house. Joining her is her father’s gorgeous associate James Cahill, who at first annoys her, but starts to slowly appeal to her as she starts to understand herself more. It’s today’s modern day standard love story with a few small twists that make it the novel that it is. A good novel to sit down and read when you want to immerse yourself in a love story.
PERSEPOLIS by Marjane Satrapi Famous because it is a black and white comic book and an award winning movie, this autobiographical story has garnered international acclaim and for good reason. The story is centred around the author’s experience growing up in Iran during and after the Islamic Revolution and her trials with adopting international culture into her own as well as surviving on her own. The title itself references the capital of the ancient Persian Empire, a time of great power and change. Full of interesting and relatable (for many) smaller stories creating a larger one, this story is both thought provoking and attractive for all kinds of readers. Ranked number five of 10 on the best fiction novels of the decade, the book is now been included in school curriculums across the globes because of its interesting voice and peek into a world many do not know of.

2312 by Kim Stanley Robinson 300 years from now technology has changed the world as we know it, and earth is not the only home humans now have. People have made homes on different planets throughout our solar system, on moons, planets, etc. But this is the year that everything changes, starting with events that unfold in a city called Terminator on Mercury - the second planet from the sun. Swan Er Hong as the main character is monumentally affected by the death of another character, and this drives the plot line of the novel forward. Swan as the woman who used to design worlds, now has to destroy them. Aside from a few slow points in the plot, 2312 is a seriously exhilarating work of fiction. This novel is one of many vices appealing to those who love adventure as well as mystery novels. A mix of a Stephen King and George Lucas with a touch of Suzanne Collins, this is a very good story.

Gaming
Diablo III The Devil is back, and after an almost a decade of absence, one would assume he is quite pissed off. Blizzard’s isometric, loot-filled, click-fest of an action-RPG is back and the hype and anticipation for the game palpable. The game picks up twenty years after the events of Diablo II, where the evils from hell have returned to the world of Tristram, and it is up to you to save it.
Dragon’s Dogma This is a Capcom RPG, more importantly, this is a Japanese RPG, so excuse the slightly off-the-mark story: you are a hero, a dragon approaches your town and tells you they are the ‘chosen one’, the dragon steals your hero’s heart, the hero doesn’t really die, and so he begins his journey to go after the dragon and ahem, get his heart back. But hey, Capcom promises a huge open-ended world, satisfying combat and good loot to offset that, so it’s all good.
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Part of a group specialized in modern warfare tactics called ‘Ghosts’, you play as an elite soldier serving as the catalyst of a hidden war raging across the globe. At your disposal is high-tech gadgetry, inspired by real-life army models that will allow you to dispose of enemies without ever being seen.
Sorcery This is the closest you will come to casting magic spells by moving your hand. Sorcery is powered by Sony’s motion-controller, the PlayStation Move, and has you journeying across a mystical world as a young apprentice, casting spells, destroy giant monsters and saving the world, eventually.
Dubai Youth Orchestra

The Dubai Youth Orchestra is a non-profit creative environment where young musicians from every imaginable social, cultural, educational and economic background come together to rehearse and perform masterworks from different countries. The orchestra offers young musicians the chance to receive the highest quality classical music education through professional, high calibre instructors, and perform to large audiences. The orchestra is made up of around 30 students where the eldest member is 28 and the youngest is only four years old.
one8one was lucky to experience the orchestra’s Pecha Kucha performance at the Pavillion on May 27, where they dazzled the audience by playing samples of Symphony 25 by Mozart (classical), Nassam Alaina El Hawa by Fairouz (Arabic), Libertango (modern) and Longa Yorgo (on Oud) in just over one minute. The sound of the Arabic Oud instrument coupled with the violins and cellos was enchanting. The audience couldn’t help but stand up and applaud for them as loud as they possibly could. You could see the pride on the faces of all the students when the audience kept asking for more. The performance was fabulous; well worth a standing ovation. The orchestra practices for two hours every Thursday and are preparing for another great public performance on June 24, 2012 at the Pavillion in Downtown Burj Dubai area. Juliana Down’s lead singer Dia paid the orchestra a visit and the band agreed to join them on stage during their next performance. So expect a very unusual and unique show that day.

WHITE OLEANDER
Cast: Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer
Cast: Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough and James D’Arcy
Cast: Alison Lohman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robin Wright and Renée Zellweger
A young Mississippi girl returns from college to find out her long-time maid is gone. Set in the 1960’s, ‘The Help’ is the story of a brave Caucasian writer and even braver African-American maids, who cannot live their lives humiliated and discriminated against anymore. This movie will take you back to a time when racial discrimination was ‘normal’ in the US. It is about the times when the truth had to be heard and change needed to happen.
This is a story about finding true love in our modern world, 1998 to be precise. It is a tale viewed through the lens of last century’s most talked about romances, that of Wallis Simspon and King Edward VIII. Wally is stuck in an abusive and unhappy marriage. She becomes obsessed with the story of Wallis Simpson and the choices she had made for Edward VIII. The more Wally learns, the clearer her future becomes for her.
Astrid is a young teenager whose life is about to change forever. Her mother, Ingrid, is a free-spirited poet who commits a crime and is convicted to a lifetime in prison. Astrid’s journey takes her from one foster home to another, giving her lessons of tragedy, pain, life and, most importantly, love. This is a story of discovery, lessons and wisdom. An absolute keeper.

Album Reviews LIGHTS ‘SIBERIA’ Yes, this is her actual name. Lights is not a newcomer; in fact, this is her second album. But in many ways it’s a first. ‘Siberia‘ is a grittier, more confident yet experimental record from this super-cute Canadian singer. The album opens with ‘Siberia’ – the electro-pop glittery title track with rather serious lyrics, perfectly setting the mood of the record. It is then followed up with the dreamy ‘Fence is Low’ and the album’s first single, ‘Toes’. The latter is definitely one of the record’s jewels and is, by itself, worth buying the album for. The record then takes you on a journey that could easily send your imagination somewhere quiet with a hint of a storm. The other highlights are ‘Banner’, ’Everybody Breaks a Glass’ and ‘Heavy Rope’. For those of you who’ve never heard of this little young lady, think Goldfrapp’s glitter and Imogen Heap’s approach with a twist of dubstep here and there. It’s refreshing to hear a record so different and organic in the midst of all the radio clones.
NICKI MINAJ ‘PINK FRIDAY: ROMAN RELOADED’ This record is as bipolar as it can get! I don’t know whether Nicki is trying to project a schizophrenic image with her alter-ego Roman, finally finding its way out or she’s just kidding. Anyhow, this should have been released on a 2-CD pack, rather than one. Basically, split the album in half and you get yourself ‘I Am... Sasha Fierce’. The first 10 tracks are full-on hip-hop, basically what got Nicki where she is. The next 11 are her exploration into the oh-sopopular dance genre. Lyrically, she’s true to her raw self, so if you are a fan, there is no doubt you will love it; if not, there is always a first time. There are definitely the skippers and repeater tracks on this record, but unlike her debut, this album is actually more appealing to the public. Highlights are ‘Beez in the Trap’, ‘Right By My Side’, ‘Starships’, ‘Beatiful Sinner’, ‘Marilyn Monroe’, ‘Fire Burns’... I can go on and on, just listen to it yourselves.

S’ cool stuff Concerts
Bat Avenged Country Sevenfold by
NIKITA BALA As a hard rock/metal fan in the UAE, the last few years have been particularly pleasing, with bands such as Korn, As I Lay Dying, Iron Maiden, Guns N Roses, and Metallica playing big events in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Despite this, it was just as surprising and amazing to hear that Avenged Sevenfold would be taking the stage at Yas’ Flash Forum. The doors opened at 8PM on the warm Friday evening, letting in hundreds of eager fans to the somewhat compact but well-equipped venue. The opening band was one of the UAE’s best metal bands, the Dubai-based group ANURYZM. About 20 minutes after they took their bows and made their way off stage to enjoy the rest of the concert, Avenged Sevenfold’s drum-kit was unveiled and the guitars and microphones were tested. At 9PM, the fervent crowd held its breath as the first few notes to the song ‘Nightmare’ played. The lights flashed, the drums and guitars kicked in, and the crowd roared upon the sight of M. Shadows, Zacky Vengeance, Johnny Christ, Synyster Gates, and Arin Ilejay. With M. Shadows constantly yelling out to the crowd about how amazing they were, Zacky jumping up and down, Johnny running from side to side trying to pump the fans up even more, and Synyster looking each fan member on his side of the stage in the eye and almost always pulling a silly expression, there was absolutely no reason for anyone to feel detached from the brilliant music being played right in front of them. Additionally, since the tour wasn’t designed to promote any particular album (their last album, Nightmare, came out in 2010), they played a pleasing variety of older and newer songs.

Throughout the concert, which consisted of songs such as Critical Acclaim and Almost Easy - to name a few, there wasn’t a single moment when the avid fans weren’t singing along - to the words or the guitar solos. The bright lights and changing backdrops kept the fans energised and even sentimental when the band took a moment to pay their respects to their former drummer and friend, Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, who passed away in December 2009. From singing along to Synyster’s or Zacky’s guitar solos, pumping fists in the air, and forming a gigantic mosh pit during the closing song, Unholy Confessions, every member of the audience would have to try very hard to choose their favourite moment. One thing, however, is for sure - there wasn’t a soul present at Flash Forum on May 4, who didn’t have a phenomenal night.

Paris Chamber Orchestra by
Anton rodionov
I’ve always been fond of classical music; I remember my mother taking me to see Swan Lake when I was in the first grade and many other operas and orchestra concerts. So when I saw a flyer about Paris Chamber Orchestra playing at DUCTAC for two nights, I absolutely had to go. The event was organized by the Dubai Concert Committee and held at DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates. It was great to see the theatre full, with people patiently waiting for the orchestra to come on stage. The orchestra included instruments such as violin, viola and cello. The performance featured two Korean opera singers who truly stole the show.

The beauty about classical music concerts is the intimacy between the musicians and the audience. As the first string is touched, one is sent on a journey, different from one listener to another. I have always admired the opportunity classical music gives you, that freedom to listen to a piece and sail to any place imaginable. Another pleasing aspect was the absence of any digital instruments throughout the concert; it really felt like we were all somewhere in France, centuries ago. I was surprised to feel this way in Dubai - a city normally booming with the latest and most modern trends. Overall, this concert didn’t only let my ears relax and learn, but also helped me discover an entire community of classical music lovers in this country. I was genuinely surprised to learn how this organisation operates in this metropolis. So if you would like to find out more about what goes on in the Dubai classical music world, simply go to www.dubaiconcertcommittee.com or scan the QRcode.

Her Look
It is finally Summer and I am sure you are as happy as I am for a nice long relaxed break and also as happy as I am because it is the season of colour, which means do not be afraid of wearing colour. Be vibrant!
by LOUISA NORTHCOTE
BOLD BLAZER Coloured blazers seem to be all the craze this season and a bold block coloured one is definitely a great purchase for this season. Wear it with a simple outfit, which will make it the statement piece and won’t be too overpowering. Summer is all about having fun with colour on an outfit so take a risk and splurge on that bright blazer!
SNAZZY SHOES Every girl loves her shoes so this season is a great time to put your best foot forward and show off your feet in some gorgeous colours. Suede heels are gorgeous and appealing because they look quite soft, so go for colours like blue, pink and orange. However, make sure they aren’t too bright and maybe opt for pastel tones of these colours. In addition statement sandals are a big want for summer, try some jewelled or even feathered ones. Don’t be afraid to dress your feet up.
ACCESSORISE LIKE CRAZY Accessorize with the best arm candy, from rings to bags and watches. Showcase all the accessories you own and put them together with a great outfit, because it can really add that tiny bit more to complete a great outfit; but watch out, when I say accessorise I don’t mean overdo it. If you wear bracelets make sure they match and don’t clash; also be sure to match the same colours of accessories.
FRINGE IS FUNKY Summer is also festival season and fringe is a great fashion trend to wear for a festival or just in general. Fringe bags and tops are not only easy to wear but actually very fashion forward and can make any outfit look super funky! Long fringe, short fringe any fringe is your friend this summer!
33
NOW YOU SEE ME… NOW YOU DON’T Many guys shy away from fashion, however, the ‘hiding’ pattern seems to be all the trend for this season. Instead of hiding away, show off with some army green camouflage. But make sure you don’t over do it and dress head to toe in the pattern. Opt for a camouflage print vest or jacket; don’t go for trousers because that could cause a fashion no no.
HELLO HATS Not only girls can pull of hats guys don’t be afraid to try something new this summer season and considering it’s sunny outside maybe swap your sunglasses for a hat. They are great to wear with anything and in any season, I personally love when I see a guy wearing a beany any time through the year also wide framed hats look great for summer! Go for neutral colours like brown, grey or black or even maroon or navy.
His Look DIAMONDS AREN’T JUST GIRLS’ BEST FRIENDS Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise! That’s all I have to say, guys. Girls aren’t the only ones who have to wear some sparkle or necklaces; for a manlier look, try simple chains or chains with a little detail or even accessorise with a scarf or bow tie. Accessories can really complete an outfit.
Louisa Northcote “I wear very different stuff. While my friends mostly wear jeans, I prefer wearing something different, like a maxi dress or some leggings with a bright top or even a blazer or heels.

She’s young, uber fashionable and lights up any room she enters. But Louisa Northcote is not just a pretty face. She’s a model, blogger and fashion editor, among other things, and has modelled for names such as Ted Baker and Giuseppe Zanotti… all this, at the age of 15! We catch up with the lovely Louisa as she tells us all about being a global citizen, getting over 77,000 views on her blog in six months and her obsession with the colour pink!
So you’re 16, a blogger, a fashion editor, model and fashionista. Wow! How did you achieve all of this at such a young age? I’m nearly 16. So still 15 years old, technically. But trust me, I’m still like, “what is going on?” I started modelling when I was 10 so that has been my world. My mum was a beauty artist so I’ve been exposed to that world all along since there was always fashion in the family. When I was younger, I was obsessed with taking pictures. Everywhere I went, my camera would go with me. My mum always encouraged me to try everything and one day suggested I start a blog. I was like, “No, no one’s going to read it.” And then I thought to myself, “Okay let me just try it.” It was more like just a diary for myself and I seriously didn’t think anyone was going to read it and didn’t expect anything. But you still start waiting for people to read it, and then when they do, you get excited. It starts with your friends, and then more people, and now it has just sky-rocketed. I don’t know how, but it has. And it is amazing because it keeps me busy - I just came from an event and after this I’m going to another event. It’s really exciting! You’ve grown up in Dubai? I’m originally from England, was born in Singapore and I’ve lived here for 7 years so I’m kind of global! I don’t go back home as often as I want to, but I do go often. I do love it here but London is like my haven. I have loads of friends there and family, it’s nice going back and seeing them. How many followers do you have on your blog? I’m not sure how many followers, but I’ve had my blog for just over six months now and have had over 77,000 views. It started with 18 views a day but now the minimum is about 800-900 views a day, and I have no clue how that happened. At the Grazia Style awards I was nominated for best blogger and I don’t even know how I achieved it. It’s amazing! It’s what I love doing. It’s going far and I’m pushing myself to achieve as much as I can. It’s ridiculous, but it’s amazing! What is being fashionable to you? It’s very much a sense of expression for me. I make myself the canvas and play around. I can’t really state what my fashion sense is since it all depends what I’m feeling. Sometimes I like to be really comfortable, other times I want to be real high fashion, or I want colour. So it really depends on my mood and all my friends always know how I’m feeling based on what I’m wearing.
36
What does Lousia wear on a regular basis? I wear very different stuff. While my friends mostly wear jeans, I prefer wearing something different, like a maxi dress or some leggings with a bright top or even a blazer or heels. Heels are one thing I can wear everywhere! No matter where I am, I can wear heels. I like to be different, that’s just me. Who is your fashion icon? That’s so hard! I have a few. I love Alexa Chung because I’m obsessed with Mulberry and I like her because she’s quirky. She goes through different types of styles - she can be slouchy, high fashion, everything. I also like Olivia Palermo because she’s high fashion. She’s at all the fashion shows and she’s always on trend. I also love Miroslava Duma and I actually got a chance to meet her, which was amazing! She’s the editor of Harper’s Bazaar and now she’s known more as a fashionista. She’s very different with her fashion, she’ll wear really extravagant things that might not always work, but she can always pull it off! What do you think of Dubai’s fashion scene? I think the 20s crowd is the most fashionable. Teenagers here aren’t very much into that; in London they sort of have their own fashion sense. But when it comes to 20s and working women here, they can pull off really high fashion and they’re more in touch with
trends. Dubai isn’t as on it as London or Paris, but they’re getting there and they are realizing the trends and trying to get it here and keep up with it. Where do you like to shop in Dubai? I love my high street London brands. Topshop is a really good brand for our age. River Island, Miss Selfridge and Promod are definitely my favourite too. I am a student so I don’t have a lot of money to spend on high brands and stuff. But these brands allow you to be fashionable without spending so much. And that’s what I like to show my readers, because not everyone has the money. I also love local designers because some of them are really making their mark nowadays. For example, I’m wearing Lady Fozaza. She’s really established now and she’s becoming international – Kim Kardashian has worn her stuff. What’s the blogging world like? It is so different! I had no idea what I was getting into. It’s one thing to attend events as a regular person, but once you get into the media industry, you actually realize how big that world is! And you have all these PR companies emailing you to attend events and to try out different products. You get things from something you thought you’d never have. But what I love is that you’ve achieved it yourself, and it’s your own work, your own writing and they like YOU! They want you to come to their events and they like your brand. That’s an amazing feeling.
“When it comes to 20s and working women here, they can pull off really high fashion...” What’s a typical day like for you? Me? Oh! Well, on weekdays, I’ve got school (laughs). I usually try to complete my homework at school, so as soon as I come home I go straight to my blog. I always have so much to blog about; it’s piled up, so I know exactly what I want to put on today, and tomorrow. I get really anxious at school since I get so many emails and I always want to check them so I rush home to do that. And I’m also into modelling. So my day is school, my blog, modelling, then arranging what I have during the week and organizing all of it. On the weekends I usually go out, but it’s usually to events. Who are your favourite bloggers? Both locally and internationally? I follow a Swedish girl named Victoria and I’m obsessed with her fashion. In Dubai the blogging community is quite small actually. But it ranges depending on the age, which is good. Today I was with Huda and her sister Mona, they both are really good. Lady Fozaza… she started with a blog. Shades and Scarves – he’s so cute because he’s a guy and he talks about his fashion.
Is there a lot of competition? Well, it depends. I won’t name names but with some of them, yes. But that’s in every industry. But the good thing is that we’re all usually at the same events, attend the same things, so we all know each other and it’s fun. The competition is about how many views we get or like during the Grazia Style Awards for example, there’s competition when it comes to the Best Blogger. Where do you see yourself in the next two years? What I would love to see myself doing is branching myself more out to London. I’ll still come here of course, so I’ll have the best of both worlds. But my dream is definitely to model. That’s where I want to take my career. And that’s why I want to branch out to London and get into agencies. I’ve modelled for a few brands in Dubai. I did a fashion show for Ted Baker and had a shoot with the amazing shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti. But in three years I’d like to see myself at London Fashion Week. That’s the big dream!
What’s been your biggest challenge? Juggling everything! Does your age hinder your career? Especially because you’re below 21, do you miss out on events? No actually, which I like. Sometimes it happens, and I get disappointed for a bit, but that’s not very often. The other day I went to Blue Marlin, Ibiza and everyone told me it’s 21+, but it’s not. There were like little children there and stuff. Yes, to drink it’s 21, but I usually have mocktails, and people know my age, so it really isn’t a problem. What are the 3 things that you can’t live without? PINK! Seriously pink! I can’t live without make-up and heels, definitely.

Slam It! Poetry SLAM IT! founded in 2011 by students Smita Sen and Paniz Sehat Niaki, is an organization that encourages people to “express themselves in honour of those who cannot” – to take advantage of the privilege of being heard. Last year, SLAM IT! had its first grand opening at the Universal American School Dubai (UAS) library on the May 12, 2011, with a large audience pouring in to witness the one-of-a-kind talents of the performers. The students and the teachers took the stage with original compositions of poetry, rap, and creative writing, and performed with utmost passion and confidence. The show was so impressive that the UAS Fine Arts Booster Club (FABC) chose to sponsor SLAM IT! and its noble cause. This year, SLAM IT! organised the UAE’s first-ever interschool poetry slam competition. The event took place on the evening of April 4th,where poet Jennah Fakhouri from Al Ittihad Private School received roaring applause and took home the Grand Prize for her poem, ‘Let Them Be Free’. She was the Master of Slam 2012. Second prize went to Nidaa Rasheed, from Dubai American Academy, for her moving poem, ‘This is Me’, while the third prize went to the impressive Jade Marion, a poet in Grade 7, for her poem ‘Answers’.
Many can see with their eyes, But few can see with their hearts. Your heart can be your corruption, Or your brand new start. Open your eyes and heart! Sometimes shut your mouth. Then hold your head high towards North. Never let your head hang south.
If you spend your life staring at the ground, That’s all you’ll ever see. Look up and catch the wind. Jade Marion Fly away peacefully.

Do you need the sky to be your limit? Do you need wings to fly? Do you need eyes to see? Do you need a reason to try? Is there a miracle every day? Is a song only what you sing? Is life about the pay Or the message that you bring? Every day I ask these questions, But the answers seem to hide. When we’re caught up in the moment, Our curiosity can subside? People are always over engaged. Hustling and bustling through their own lives. Their schedules are fully booked. It’s every man for himself to survive. Everyone is blind Because their priority is not to see. Miracles aren’t material things. It’s the life in you and me.
Because you don’t need wings to fly. You don’t need the wind to soar. You need to reach your goal. Open brand new doors! Realize the sky isn’t the limit. Truth is there’s no limit at all. Reach beyond infinity. There is no reason to stall. The true prize for trying is living. Make every word you say a song. Bring a message to the world. Accept when you were wrong. Life would not be life If we didn’t make mistakes. But we always get back up, And a better day is what we make. Thousands of questions come into our heads. Some eventually float away. Maybe the questions answer themselves. Perhaps they will forever stay.
It’s waking in the morning And seeing a glimmering sun. Though there is one important question. It’s making new friends It’s ourselves we must ask. And just having fun. Are our questions worth answering Or is it too hard a task? It’s giving everything all that you’ve got. It’s looking ahead without any fear. You should know that your present is vivid. See your future is clear.
LET THEM BE FREE by
THIS IS ME! by
Nidaa Rasheed
I am a statue, for my heart has turned cold, as my thoughts are soaked with darkness blacker than coal. Feel the sadness overflow from my mind, shadowing the days. As I await the savior of happiness that my body craves. All the insecurities that I hold inside, pound against my skull like a hammer trying to break free. Why life, why deprive me from the talents I feel I so have and possess. Because I don’t have first place medals overflowing my room? Or is it that no one remembers my name because it has not been engraved on a plaque? Am I still not me? Forget those fake Barbie Dolls on TV, and those well rounded students that I will never be. But I am trying to be perfect can’t you see, I am the forgotten box filled with cobwebs in the corner ready to be opened and set free. So let go of your judgments, because you will never understand me. Why make me try so hard in order to get myself up, and then bring me down to kiss the dust of my failures. Am I not good enough, should I just give up? No! Life is about what I make it, so be it, if you are not impressed with my work. A man places value on himself, not by what others tell him. Talent is an intangible unique thing inside all of us, and by no means can it be represented by any mere piece of paper. Talent is so much more, you and I are so much more than what these papers tell about us, what others tell about us. On the darkest day I sit down outside while the grass wraps it dew stricken leaves around my cold self. With the assurance of being alive only by the shapes of gravel engraved in my back. The crisp breeze slithers its cold frigid fingers into my mind as it coils itself around my thoughts and then my heart slows its beating to match the sounds of the sadness chipping my insides. You give me the chance to be free, the chance to express myself, and then cage me like a bird only giving me enough room to flap my wings until I get exhausted by hitting the metal wires. At childhood, I am expected to follow all the rules and color between the lines. A little older and I am supposed to start thinking about getting good grades for high school, and joining clubs that will make my resume shine. And here I am ready for University, with only a number to represent me. My whole life, my personality, my soul, my passion, and my future all illustrated as a barcode, as if I was a piece of grocery. Oh no, this apple is very well rounded indeed however it has many scars and bruises making it look worse than the others, leave it be I am sure it will be picked eventually. Well did it not come to your attention that those scars represent my determination of all my failures in life and how I have conquered them , and those bruises are all the bad decisions I had to make that made me fall from the top in order to be who I am today? Open your eyes, we do not live in a world where everyday is filled with rainbows and sunshine and all our decisions make us grow. Everyday is a constant battle just to get through, there are so many chances in life but you never mentioned fear bro. So one day I get a chance to be free, as I lay peacefully underneath this wise old willow tree. When the wind starts to make the leaves dance I forget the world I once know and take a chance. That’s when I step out of the tangled shadows, and let my eyes be the windows to my soul in this meadow. I am met with a splash of warmth that melts my frozen mind, for I see that the sun has come to save me finally. I was a statue, covered under rocks of screams. Until the day I made myself change and set new dreams. Life will always degrade me, others will always judge me, and no one will ever understand me. But I will get up when I am dragged to the bottom and with my last breath say THIS IS ME!

A child cries while the mother dies The father is already gone Fight a war for peace The child will join its parents soon For a soldier is close at hand He has no honor His face inflicts terror The child screeches once more, its voice lost in a sea of confusion And I can only observe Another land, Another scream, but this from a maiden Her brothers all around her, All younger and fearful A tank rolls over her home, Guns all around Her mother is gone She is crying so hard A girl still And I can only observe A different scene A different place A broken door The air aroar in the too silent town Where no survivors remain A doll flies with the wind Her name was Hind But her owner is gone So she flies forever A symbol of life in a place reeking of death And I can only observe An old woman screams now On her lips a single plea, As she rushes in to the war zone Armed with pots and coals Against those with guns and dead souls FREEDOM! she says as they bash in her head FREEDOM! she screams FREEDOM! FREEDOM! GOD GRANT US FREEDOM! And I can only observe I turn off the TV The screen goes blank But the images still haunt me So many dead Just to be free While I sit in luxury Freedom, I whisper Let them be free

Summer is always exciting! It’s time for holidays and time for new phones, computers and major conferences. Here are some of the highlights for this sunny season. Read on...
OSX MOUNTAIN LION Here is the thing, many may argue that it is way too early to release an OSX upgrade, since Lion was released a little under 11 months ago. I tend to stay neutral. While I agree that it is, indeed, unusual, I happen to be somewhat interested in seeing where Apple will take OSX this time. So far, the direction seems to be towards iOS. Mountain Lion brings even more features from iOS: Game Center, Reminders, Notes, Calendar, Air Play, Twitter, iMessage and, most importantly, Notifications Center and iCloud. While you might be yearning for many of these features already, I’d like to mention that two of them, iMessage and iCloud, are already available from Apple. Speaking of Notification Center, here is how it works: swipe to the left and you get an iOS-like Notification Center on the right of the screen. Obviously there are notifications that pop up without interrupting whatever work is being done. With this upgrade, Apple delivers a deeper and ever seamless integration of iCloud into the OSX. I, personally, have been using it since last August and find it very useful in many situations. Overall, OSX 10.8 is not a revolutionary but more of an evolutionary upgrade to the Mac. It is not necessary, but then again, it is cheap, so why not?
SAMSUNG GALAXY SIII
BLACKBERRY 10
This is Sammy’s latest and greatest: Samsung Galaxy SIII, launched with a tag line: ‘Designed for Humans’. Hang on, what about the other phones? Who/ what are those designed for?
Finally! It’s taken them five years and cost them two CEOs to come out with this. RIM has announced its new operating system, Blackberry 10. According to Waterloo, the OS was built from scratch, using QNX.
Silly tag lines aside, the phone is actually impressive. It packs a 4.8’’ Pentile AMOLED display, quadcore processor, 8 MP rear camera, ICS Touch Wiz and a bunch of Sammy’s extra trademarked features. I will go through a couple: ‘Smart Stay’ is a function which uses the front facing camera to follow your eyes and ‘see’ whether you are looking at the screen or not. This is for those who like to fall asleep while reading a book on their mobile. ‘Direct Call’ is pretty cool. Let’s say you are typing a text to a friend and then suddenly think it would be much better to call. All you have to do is raise the phone to your ear and Galaxy will call them. There is also ‘S Voice’, which is very similar to Apple’s ‘Siri’, looks included. While it is nice to see Samsung try, ’S Voice’ is light years behind ‘Siri’ when it comes to capabilities. Indeed it understands eight languages and can wake you up and make calls for you, it definitely needs further development. Lastly, the phone is a great upgrade from the original Galaxy S; however, I’d stay away and wait for the next Nexus if I were a Galaxy SII owner.
Amongst the features is ‘Glimpse’, which lets you swipe the current app window to the left and sort of glance at the notifications; move it further, and you are in the next app. Neat. Another feature is the new camera, which stays ‘live’ and then lets you ‘go back in time’ to pick the perfect shot in case your friend blinked in the photo. And finally, the big question, “What about the infamous Blackberry keyboard?” At the moment you can say “goodbye”, as their main focus is on the soft keyboard, which is not only visually similar to the physical one, but additionally features a function where the phone will guess the word you are typing from the next letter. Yes, confusing, but RIM says it will all make sense. They did, however, mention that the physical keyboards will be coming out at a later stage. The unit you see above is a developers’ device, i.e. this is not a consumer design; it doesn’t actually run BB10, it runs a scaled-down BB Playbook 2 OS. To cap this all, I’d say it is exciting and refreshing to see RIM bring on something new and different from Android and iOS. They’ve got a lot to catch up with, so let’s just hope they can.

ICE AGE 4
MADAGASCAR 3
Starring: Ray Romano, Karen Disher, Queen Latifah
Starring: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer
Just like the ‘Madagascar’ franchise, the ‘Ice Age’ series has lost quite a bit of its original charm but audiences still love it. In this new instalment, our gang of heroes have to deal with drifting continents while also finding themselves in hilarious situations. And just like you’d expect, Scrat is back. Expect a crater-sized hit for the summer.
LINCOLN: PROMETHEUS VAMPIRE HUNTER Starring: : Noomi Rapace, Starring: Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper Just like ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, this film puts a genre bending twist on a real life character and makes things a lot more interesting. The plot follows president Abraham Lincoln in an untold chapter of his life where his mother was killed by supernatural creatures, which makes him vow to battles vampires that reign his city. Director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) brings his signature visual flair to a slick looking revisionist action movie that will please blockbuster fans.
Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Director Ridley Scott makes a triumphant and long-awaited return to the genre he redefined decades ago with his ground breaking ‘Alien’, and to say that ‘Prometheus’ doesn’t evoke the same feel would be an understatement. The plot follows a team of explorers to find clues that hint at the origin of Mankind. But things take a turn for the worse as they are left fighting for the survival of our species. Any sci-fi fan should have this at the top of his/her must-see list.
The gang of animals are back for yet another adventure, and even though things might be a little stale for the franchise at this point, audiences are sure to welcome the likable characters once again. This time around, the gang finds itself in the heart of Europe and adventures ensue in 3D. Expect a fun but familiar time at the movies.
THE DICTATOR Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley The hilarious mastermind behind ‘Borat’ and ‘Bruno’ is back, this time with ‘The Dictator’, a scripted comedy that still doesn’t shy away from crossing the line. The film follows Sacha Baron Cohen as a tyrant leader of the Republic of Wadiya, who makes a visit to the United States and has to adapt to the country new to him. The film looks hilariously edgy in classic ‘Borat’ style that skyrocketed Sacha Baron Cohen to fame.
G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Starring: Channing Tatum, Ray Park, Dwayne Johnson While the first film was an enjoyable dumb summer blockbuster, Paramount decided to freshen things up for the sequel of the 2009 hit by removing almost the entire cast of the original and adding Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis to the mix. With new director John Chu, the film feels grittier and more of a realistic action movie compared to the previous film and continues the story of the Joes fighting off a threat on a global scale that initiated in the first film.

The story revolves around Sooki Stackhouse - a waitress at Merlott’s, a small restaurant in the tiny town Bon Tomps, Louisiana. She’s a telepath who falls in love with Bill, a vampire. Speaking of vampires, they had officially “come out of the coffin” to the public as a new synthetic blood called ‘True Blood’ has been developed, meant to quench these dark creatures’ thirst. Even though people should feel safe now, and the vampires should not hunt, the reality is far too different.

Victoria Borasio ACTRESS
It was a hot, regular summer afternoon, and as I sat at a new café in town sipping a cool glass of water, a friendly young lady walked up to me and introduced herself confidently. Dressed in black, her brown hair was pulled up, with the exception of a few curls managing to find their way lose - Victoria Borasio brought in an effervescent energy the second she arrived. Without wasting any time, the conversation started flowing and I slipped in the question that was on my mind since I had read about her - how did she manage to start her career at the age of five, when most girls were busy playing with Barbies or dreaming of becoming a pop star. “I was the only child and I was very shy. So my mother was like, “gosh, you better get into acting or something,”” she giggles. “And they sent me off to speech and drama class. I absolutely loved it. So that’s really where it started and it hasn’t stopped since!” Victoria did however take a short break from acting in between to go to dental school and become a dental hygiene therapist. “I did it to get a real job,” she says casually. “But, I always knew I’d get back into acting. When you love something you cant ever leave it!” Fast forward several years later and Victoria has produced three short films, filmed seven independent short films, one feature film, a pilot for a TV series and a TV series for MBC4. Her career includes playing a role in ‘The Traveler,’ directed by Musaab Ag, which took her to Cannes film festival; ‘Half Way’ which she wrote, produced and starred in; and ‘Moments of Fiction,’ a feature film directed by Mohammed Mamdouh which she was also the lead in. All this, and she’s still a 20-something year old! Victoria does admit though, that when she first moved to Dubai, it was a culture shock for her! “It was so different from London. But now it’s changed so much. There are so many expatriates here and they’ve brought in a bit of their own culture,” she explains. Having said that, she also acknowledges that the industry here is still in its infancy and that competition is less. As part of the industry, Victoria aspires to do her bit to help it develop. “I’m currently working on a project with Make Business Hub called Make Cinema and Live Cinema,” she says excitedly as she sips some sparkling water. “We’ll be incorporating an audience into a live, living cinema event. They live the evening through being part of the film. This would help people connect and network with other people with similar interests,” she adds. I then go on to asking her about her favourite role. “I like the messed up characters, the psychos!” she laughs. “It’s more of a challenge as these characters are so different from who I am. In the TV series ‘Checking In’, I was playing this wife of a paedophile and I was so violent; it was really the next level! I had so much fun playing that character.” Obviously my curiosity kicks in to understand how she prepares for such roles. “Well, you really have to get into the character,” she says a bit more seriously. “I just live in the moment. When I imagine myself in the role, I start living it under these imaginary circumstances. I imagine everything around me and by doing that, my actions and reactions start to evolve,” she says. Clearly someone with such passion and dedication has inspirations. “I absolutely love Meryl Streep and Audrey Hepburn,” she says, her eyes gleaming. Just then I notice how much of an Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s look she has. Maybe it’s her black outfit, small fringe, big eyes and petite frame. Or maybe it’s just my imagination. I wonder about her spare time and if she has any at all given the many different projects she juggles. She laughs and tells me that she designs hats! “That’s a bit of fun. Hat-making actually allows you to create shapes and designs with your hands. It allows you to work with people on a personal level. It’s a fulfilling thing to do, and wearing a hat makes you feel so fabulous!” she laughs. by

Art of Defence
Some martial arts are beautiful to watch and involve fluid, dance-like moves. Hollywood movies have made martial arts like King Fu very popular in recent years and launched the careers of new movie stars. However, they take a high level of fitness and flexibility and many years of training to perform effectively. Most people simply do not have the dedication to reach the level required to make some martial arts an effective form of self-defence. A throwing-based martial art like Judo is a fantastic sport but has limited effect in a street attack. The principles of controlling an opponent’s balance still apply outside the dojo but when faced with a surprise attack, many Judo students would not survive.
47
What’s the best martial art for self-defence? Most countries have some form of martial art which has developed over the centuries and many of these have spread across the globe. There are martial arts based on throwing an attacker or locking them to the ground and those based more on strikes, punches and kicks. But which martial arts are the best for self-defence?
An effective form of self-defence should be based on simple techniques which become second nature. Complicated martial arts moves and techniques often fail under the pressure of a real attack. A violent street encounter is very different from the friendly training environment most martial arts schools offer. There are no rules when it comes to a real fight, and competition based martial arts do not prepare their students for this. In fact, some martial art training can be worse than none at all as the student may be over-confident in their abilities. Many people become focussed on achieving their next coloured belt grading and forget that martial arts are a form of combat and should be effective in real situations. Many martial arts are not based on the types of attacks and situations which occur in real life. For example, aikido is based largely on attacks from the noble days of the Samurai warriors. In a real street fight anything goes and ‘dirty moves’ and surprises are inevitable. Years of traditional training can not prepare you for this. Effective self-defence works best in the form of simple to execute techniques which become a reaction without thought. It is always best to avoid a fight or physical confrontation but there are times when using some form of self-defence is the only solution. Simple strikes to weak points of the body such as the nose or groin can be far more effective than complex kicking moves requiring great agility. by

Our Needy Planet by
HANEEN ALQAM
“Saving the planet is boring.” “Pointless.” “Often a little too much work to do on top of a daily routine.” Here are some of the common responses to the very touchy subject of the modern day; the protection of the environment. There are some who agree to having this approach to the environment, whereas there are also the opposites. People are required to physically act upon such a thing as saving the planet, instead of having it automatically processed like it’s nothing. Now here is our problem - the ease of laze in doing the simplest of actions every day, constricting any real worthwhile involvement every now and then. Why is it that nowadays, contributing to one of the world’s main concerns is the changing effect on the environment? Why is it that a planet, that has survived 4.6 billion years is currently in greater demand for environment care than in the last 50 years? The answer to these two questions is simple; the planet we inhabit is far too needy. What we often associate with the word ‘needy’ is something rather negative and avoidable. However, we’re discussing planet Earth, our current source of life and being. When this life source begins to deteriorate, we’re obliged to act. Even the simplest of acts to protect the environment still counts as contribution in remedying this fragile planet. The UAE has participated in Earth Hour since 2009, deeming it quite effective and fetching. An organisation in the Emirate of Sharjah has an award winning environmental management program, ‘Bee’ah’. Abu Dhabi hosts the Environment Agency, which aims to engage all age groups online concepts like ‘Green Your Home’ for home-based references and ‘Shaheen’s World’ for a child-friendly environment of learning easy ways to conserve resources and protect ‘Our Little Big World’. Moreover, the primary organisation for the UAE as a whole is EEG-UAE (Emirates Environmental Group) based in Dubai and holds statistics and events for the cause, and is quite approachable for people at any given time. So what’s the point? The benefits? The ‘what’s in it for me?’ The point is, you’re saving the only way you’ll live, breathe, eat, and sleep for years to come (unless of course, science finds Mars inhabitable). In retrospect, the benefits of a single contribution outweigh the input made, even something as simple as reusing something for a longer period of time, reducing the amount of light you use at night, or recycling a few pieces here and there effectively. The cost of doing at least one of these things? Nothing. Protecting the environment on a daily basis in places like your own home is almost always costless. In fact, in some cases it benefits your wallet more than yourself. Again, what you gain from protecting the Earth is purely righteous and beneficial; however, you as an individual could find your gains by yourself when contributing to a respected cause. It’s not about the scare anymore in having to move and do something about saving our planet; it’s what you think is more of a useful act of help rather than a respected chore bestowed onto you. Think. Act. Prove. Our needy planet won’t be stopping soon.

The sight of these women had me wondering what goes through their minds when they see people and cities modernising and pass them by. The term ‘out of place’ comes to mind. Coming from a time when technology was just beginning to be of value, life today can be a real challenge for the elderly in so many ways. Everything is much too fast. Letters to a Coach Get advice from our life coach Maria Chatila. Write to her at coach@one8one.net. All writing will remain anonymous.
Q.
It’s very hard for me to find enough time and motivation for all the reading and writing I have to do for my course plus all the essays and group work. I panic like crazy. I’ve realized that there are times when I work best, which is at night, but then I end up staying up all night. Then, when I go to early morning lectures I’m half asleep and retain nothing. I’m panicking because if I keep this up I’ll never pass.
Maria V. Chatila is presently living in Dubai with her husband and three children. She works as an Education & Relationship Life Coach. She is dedicated to helping schools, families, couples and individuals to build personal and family awareness, while creating empowering relationships. Maria has given talks and workshops to groups and also works privately with clients.
Owl It sounds to me like you may have a slight time management issue. For many students, this is one of the biggest challenges that face when they cross over into a learning environment where they are given a more flexible yet somehow more rigid school schedule. Firstly, sit down and ask yourself; ‘Why am I learning? What is my goal? What do I want to achieve as a student?’ The answers to these questions will help you tap into your BIGGER PICTURE. Write down the answers and highlight the BIGGER PICTURE. Put it somewhere that you will see it every time that you are studying. Keeping in touch with this will help to keep you motivated during your challenging times. Next, take a sheet of paper and jot down all of the classes that you take, the group work that is required, homework assignments and any other reading or writing that is obligatory. Create a timetable similar to the one below and schedule everything in, including SLEEP! Time

7:00 am 8:00 am 9:00 am Panic arises when we feel unprepared for things like tests and assignments because we haven’t studied enough. Most times, being unprepared is caused by a lack of proper planning. Creating a plan and sticking to it can help you feel more prepared. Finally, panic may have become a habit for you so you may want to create new habits and stick to them. Remember, whenever you feel demotivated, look at your BIGGER PICTURE and remember why you are learning/studying. Get enough sleep, eat healthy foods and stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. Why not ask a friend to join you on this journey. It is always fun to have someone there that can help pick us up when we feel down. Have fun with this and I wish you great sleep and wonderful learning!
Still a baby? It sounds to me like you may have graduated university but that your parents are still treating you like a high school student. This is very common. In fact, many adults that travel abroad and live with their parents during their summer holidays have the very same complaints. Does this mean that it is normal and acceptable? I think that it is natural for parents to avoid noticing the growth changes in their children, regardless of their age, but it is not acceptable for either the parents or the children. This is what we call ‘crossing edges’ in the coaching world. You may have crossed over from being a student to being a university graduate but your parents never really crossed over with you. This experience, although not uncommon, can create a very tense environment at home, which will lead to creating challenges for your long-term relationships with your parents. It really is a vicious cycle. My suggestion for you is to do the following over a period of at least 14 days. • Notice your own behaviour at home. Are you acting like a child? For example, are you taking on adult responsibilities for yourself? Are you cooking for yourself, cleaning after yourself, sharing in the home responsibilities? • Notice your parents’ behaviour at home. When are they treating you like a child? What initiates their parenting behaviour with you? • Create a time journal and track down the above learnings. Doing this will start to help you notice the onset of behaviours. What you want to do is become aware of the cycle. • Once you have completed your homework, sit down with your parents and share what you have learned. Remember to bring this learning to them WITHOUT judgement. Your approach here will really show them how mature that you have become. This is your moment to open a channel of communication with them that, ‘as a family’, you may never have had before. • During your conversation with your parents, ask them to share with you what they are feeling about being parents to a university graduate. What are their hopes as parents? What are their worries as parents? What are their expectations of you now that you have graduated from university? • Now, It is your chance to share with them how you feel. What are your feelings about being a university graduate that lives at home with his/her parents? What are your hopes as their child living at home? What are your worries as their child living at home? What are your expectations of your parents now that you have graduated from university? • Finally, create the relationship that you all want to have together. What can you expect from each other? What kind of environment do you want to be a part of together at home? What do you want it to feel like living under the same roof together? What is going to be different now that you have had this conversation? How do you all want to behave if parent/child fall back into old behaviours? I hope that this helps you all to create the new relationship that your family wants to have. Remember, you may have crossed over an edge but your parents may not have been ready, willing or able to, so hold their hands through this process. I wish you all the greatest luck.
Q. I’ve finished university but live with my
parents. Although they are very nice they won’t leave me alone. They keep asking me where I’m going, what time I’ll get back and even ask to meet my friends. When will they get it that I’m not a baby and can have my own life?

Sunny Life When the days get longer and warmer, tank tops and swimsuits come out of the closet and the temptation to lounge by the pool becomes irresistible. The good news is that sun exposure provides you with vitamin D, which your body needs in order to absorb calcium and maintain healthy bones. The bad news is that getting too much sun can cause serious health problems such as skin cancer.
STAY INSIDE DURING PEAK HOURS Typically the sun is at its highest and its rays are at their strongest between 10AM and 4PM. These peak hours are the window of time in which you are most likely to suffer from sun damage. One way to confirm the sun’s intensity on a sunny day is to look at your shadow when you are outdoors. If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s rays are at their strongest. Still, it’s important to keep in mind that the sun still has peak hours on days that are cool and cloudy, because the sun’s rays travel through clouds. If you plan to attend a daytime barbecue or a pool party during peak hours, spend most of your time under a tree or in another shady area to reduce your risk of sunburn. Otherwise, plan to spend the early part of your day enjoying indoor activities.
SLATHER EARLY AND OFTEN Don’t skimp on sunscreen. At a minimum, your sunscreen should have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 and protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Also, pay close attention to the clock to make sure you’re applying and reapplying sunscreen as often as you should. For the first application, slather on at least an ounce of sunscreen – about the amount you can fit into your palm – at least 20 minutes before you go out in the sun. Don’t forget to cover all areas of skin that you plan to leave exposed. This almost always includes your lips and ears, and it may include other easyto-forget areas such as the back of your knees, the top of your feet, and the back of your neck. Reapply sunscreen at least once every two hours, or more frequently if you have been swimming or sweating.
DRESS CAREFULLY In general, the more clothes you wear in the sun, the safer your skin will be. Still, not all attire is equally protective against the sun’s rays. For example, tightly woven material is more protective than loosely woven material. To test your fabric’s weave, hold your clothing up to the light and observe how much light shines through. If you see a lot of light shining through, try another outfit. Additionally, a broad-brimmed hat covers more than a baseball cap, and wrap-around sunglasses are often more protective than smaller frames. Still, you should check on the quality of your sunglasses to make sure they offer at least 99 percent UV protection. Don’t simply rely on the darkness of the lenses.
CONSIDER YOUR PERSONAL SUNBURN RISK Although anyone can suffer from sun damage, you are at a greater risk of burns if you have fair skin, warns the Mayo Clinic. Dark skin is more protected from burns because it contains more of a pigment called melanin. However, melanin doesn’t protect you against long-term sun damage. You may also be at a higher risk of sunburn if you take certain medications – often, antibiotics and acne medications – and if you spend most of your time at a high-altitude or in a sunny climate.

The beginning of your summer will be anything but dull. There will be a lot of people around you and loads of planning for fun stuff. Make sure you divide tasks well so there’s no confusion as to who does what. Your skill in persuading people to do what you want is getting stronger so try it out as much as you can and practice your magic. Try and avoid any daredevil acts this month and stay safe.
This summer, it will be your mission to find the balance between body, mind and soul. So take long walks, think out loud and include the people you cherish most in your life into your thoughts and conversations. You will have a powerful start with loads of energy and motivation, but try and maintain it so that it lasts all summer. Eat healthy, drink loads of water and take care of your body.
You have had doubts but this summer you will find what you were looking for; the answer to that question that has been bugging you for so long. You find a hidden passion, but be careful not to overdo it. Proceed with great care if it’s something you love doing but are attempting for the first time. Think of the risks and consequences in case something goes wrong. Use that great energy to get rid of any stress you may feel.
Things will go a little slow this summer; some days it may feel like the day is repeating itself over and over again. You need that freedom that you have not been getting lately. Be sensible and do your best to work things out by using that marvellous thing in your skull. Taking a course in something you’ve always wanted to learn will give you that freedom and excitement you’ve been looking for.

Be flexible and happy, because what you feel is your choice. Speak to as many people as possible and see if you can learn one thing from each person you speak to. Don’t judge, just listen. All those social outings may become a little heavy on the pocket but you can rely on your creativity to come up with fun stuff that is inexpensive. Don’t exhaust your body with extra activities and too many late nights, otherwise you’ll have to pay for it later.
You are focused. All the traveling and cultural experiences leave you with a sense of fulfilment when it comes to your spiritual thoughts. Think and hold your horses when making a decision. Ask yourself “is this what I want?” and “what will the long term impact be if I make that decision?” You have passion and will dare yourself to do great things. Do them if they are in line with your values.
You are finally getting some answers and results from all that hard work. Things are much clearer now and it’s time to set your next goals. Once that is done you will need loads of patients and attention to detail to get to where you want. Some barriers between you and other people that you’ve met will be removed and you will become great friends.
You may be a little worried about some things that didn’t seem to go your way. Try a different approach or reaction to the situation; change how you think and your result will change. You have good luck this summer and may earn some extra cash or credit while doing what you love to do. Be diplomatic and try not to take any risks.

It will be a fun summer for you. Watch out for people’s buttons and never push them unless you want trouble. Put together a team and start some kind of project or band. But be very open to every person’s opinions even if you don’t agree. Try it out, then judge or react. You will realize how much you have learned from this year’s mistakes and will laugh at all the embarrassing moments in your life.
You will be attracted to young, fun and cheerful types of people that have at least a bit of sense in their heads. You will enjoy what you’re doing and wish you were paid for it, or the other way around, you’ll be doing things you don’t like just for the pay. But it won’t stay that way for long. Things are looking great ahead, and by the end of the summer you will go back to that overly ambitious person you always were.
Friends and relationships are the topic of conversation and thought for you this summer. There is a lot of energy surrounding you and your friends. You being overly sensitive and subjective will not help. Now is the time to take out the calculator and those markers and make your future vision board. Write down what you want and go for it right away, there’s no time to waste.
In spite of everything around you, you will approach things with all the calm and collectiveness you possess. You seem to have more interest in where you stay, which you will be upgrading; whether it’s redecorating your room, your home or even moving to a different place altogether. Take up a hobby that allows you to express yourself creatively.

Quiz ARE YOU POPULAR? Points 1: a – 3, b – 2, c – 1 2: a – 3, b – 1, c – 2 3: a – 2, b – 3, c – 1 4: a – 2, b – 1, c – 3
5: a – 3, b – 1, c – 2 6: a – 1, b – 2, c – 3 7: a – 1, b - 2, c – 3 8: a – 3, b – 2, c - 1 Tick the answers in the quiz to find out if you are popular: 1:
Do you have loads of friends? a. Yea, I’m in high demand b. I have all the friends I need c. Not too many, I’m a private person
2: Did anyone text, email, bbm or call you while you were
doing this quiz? And no, your family doesn’t count. a. Yup, loads of people. My bbm doesn’t go quiet. Ever! b. No c. Oh! My mom DID call
3: Do loads of people comment on your wall or blog?
1-8
You are not interested in being popular and don’t like popular people anyway. You keep to yourself and have a few great and loyal friends who are always there for you no matter what. You are comfortable being along because you like your own company and prefer to keep personal things private. Which means you don’t post anything private on any social website and have your privacy setting set to the max.
9-16 You have good friends and people know who you are.
You have a presence but prefer hanging out with people you’re comfortable with and never force yourself to be nice to people just because of their social status. You are very comfortable in your own shoes and love hanging out on weekends and meeting new people. But that doesn’t mean they’ll become best friends in an instant. You’ll be nice to everyone but they need to work on getting the “friend” title if they really want it.
17-24
You are the social butterfly. You can’t sit for a single minute without people. You’re either out partying, at an event or preparing for one. You are invited to every party anyone’s holding. Doesn’t mean you’ll attend all of them and the people whose parties you chose to go to consider themselves lucky. You know everyone there is to know. Not everyone, but all the important people at least. You shine when you walk so remember to use that energy towards all that is positive.
a. Once in a while b. Yea, I have to check everything and can barely keep up c. Wall? What wall?
4:
Do you find it hard to keep up when it comes to your social life? a. Not really. Sometimes I’m busy and sometimes I chill and have nothing to do which I’m happy with anyway b. Not at all c. Yea, there’s just not enough time in the day to fit in everything I want to do
5: Do you feel that some of your friends copy you sometimes?
a. They do, and it’s so annoying b. No c. They only copy my homework
6: What do you normally do over the weekend?
a. Just hang around the house b. Go out with friends on Thursday usually but nothing during the other two days c. I’m out and about all weekend and need a weekend after the weekend just to relax
7: How many people showed up to your last birthday party?
a. 5-15 b. 16-40 c. I couldn’t count them, there were so many
8: Do you hang out with people from other universities or
schools? a. Oh yea! I know a lot of people b. Not really, I know so many people here already that I don’t have time c. No. Not really interested

Sports Editor Hana Hassanbek Fashion Art Director Ivana Arsenijevic Stylist Ivana Mazic Love to write? Whether it’s poems, book reviews, game reviews, fiction or nonfiction: if you write, we want to read. Like Fashion? No matter what shape or size you are, we’re looking for character. If you’ve got what it takes to be in front of the camera we want you in our photoshoot. Play an instrument? Let us hear about it! Read a book lately? Send us a review and give others the chance to read it or leave it. Love sports? Write to us so we can let everyone else know how much fun your sport is and how they can join in. Play video games? We want to know what the best and most disappointing games are that you’ve played. You never know what you might win just by giving us your opinion. Like jokes? Knock knock on our email and make us laugh! Are you an art lover? Show us what you can do. Beautiful things are meant to be seen. Love your camera? Pick it up and send us your best photos to be published. Know of a cool event? Let us know and we’ll be there to take pictures. Do you like to act? Young thespians, show us what you can do. Watch movies? Tell us all about the latest movies you’ve seen so everyone else can know if it’s worth watching or not. Listen to music? What’s your favourite band? Write about them so everyone can have a listen.
