Have a Happy one! Yes, it’s the time of year we’ve all been waiting for. December is, by far, the best month of the year. It marks the end of a remarkable year and the beginning of a new one, with a lot to look forward to now that Dubai is hosting Expo2020 (p.10). You will hear a lot of good music (p.16) this month, ranging from Emirati music on National Day to Christmas carols. That is what I love about this amazing country; it’s like one gigantic party that everyone is invited to. We’ve put together some fashionable clothes that you can wear to the party (p.30) along with some awesome T-shirts (p.34) made especially for us cool people living in the UAE. Our major achievement for one8one this year is the fact that we are reaching more people further away from us. Although we are based in the UAE we have had people send us articles all the way from Canada, the U.S., Qatar, Jordan and Saudi Arabia (p.22). It is passionate people like you that make one8one successful, so we have decided to recruit brand ambassadors to represent us (p.35) and get all the free goodies we receive at our office. Yes, they get to come and play PlayStation (p.12) at our office. Yes! They get to go to movie premiers (p.46). And finally, we will have a very very exciting surprise for everyone starting January. What’s that? You want a clue? Ok! I’ll give you one. You will be able to get a copy of one8one with that tall hot chocolate you ordered. Have a happy New Year everyone!

ADMAF gives Design Award to Students for Unique Art Pavilion at this Year’s Abu Dhabi Art Under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan bin Mabarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) presented Lamya Al Shamsi and Hanan Al Kaf, from the University of Sharjah’s College of Fine Arts & Design, with the inaugural ADMAF Design Award 2013. H.E. Hoda I. Al Khamis-Kanoo, Founder of ADMAF, said: “Beyond our support for Emirati artists, ADMAF – through its design award and a number of other youth initiatives – aims to inspire a new generation of creative minds capable of presenting contemporary art to a wider public...by inspiring the country’s future innovators, ADMAF is fully committed to the growth and development of the UAE’s visual arts industry.” The ADMAF Design Award enables ADMAF to celebrate the creative talent of the UAE youth in both design and science. This year’s applicants were encouraged to draw inspiration from the renowned product and interior designer, Philippe Starck, in order to produce a modern and eye catching booth at the art fair. The winners of the inaugural 2013 edition were hugely successful in fulfilling the brief by creating a contemporary space that displays the works of artists Noor Al Suwaidi, Hamdan Al Shamsi, Dana Al Mazrouei, Farah Al Qasimi, Mohammed Al Messabi, Maryam Al Suweidi and Sarah Ibrahim, as well as ADMAF’s other initiatives (exhibitions and discussions, commissions, grants, advice and advocacy).
The B Side: Ruben Sanchez exhibition at Tashkeel The B Side: the place for second chances and experimentation, as shown by Ruben Sanchez. Having been brought up in Madrid, his art work showcased his love of skateboarding and graffiti, due to the fact that he would use a mixture of organic textures such as wood and acrylic paints to create an abstract graffiti design. His art work was showcased at Tashkeel, an art gallery located in Nad Al Sheba. Tashkeel is the best creative space for upcoming artists because it provides art space, access to art and design facilities and a reference library. Although this area is very isolated it was the perfect place for skateboarders because outside the art exhibition was a small skate park. So, for Ruben Sanchez this was one place to re-live his childhood and enjoy both art and skateboarding. writing and photos by Azza gasim
The price for his artwork ranged from Dhs600 (for his small prints) to Dhs25,000 (for his larger pieces). He also designed a unique car which was purchased in a scrapyard and re-invented to become a work of art. For any young artist who loves graffiti and abstract art, this is one artist to look to for inspiration.

ALHOSN University’s inaugural ‘Sports Day’ encourages community to live healthy ALHOSN University called on its students, employees and the community at large to adopt a more active and healthy lifestyle during its 1st Sports Day held on November 25, 2013 at the Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Musalla, Abu Dhabi. The event officially commenced with a seminar on podiatry and sports injuries and their proper care, conducted by Dr. Jeoseph Quattrone from Universal Hospital, followed by a presentation on nutrition and dietary habits by Dr. Anita Das Gupta, a Clinical Dietician and Nutritionist at Burjeel Hospital. Both sessions were held at the university’s Male Campus. The main activities took place at the Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Stadium near the University campus from 5 to 8 pm. Various fitness and sports clubs, as well as health service providers, set up information booths at the venue, where special sessions on Aikido, Body Attack, Body Combat, Body Balance, Body Jam, Yoga, and Zumba were held as well. Football, table tennis and basketball tournaments also formed part of the day’s agenda. Universal Hospital conducted free medical check-ups to determine the Body Mass Index (BMI), blood sugar level and pulse rate of participants. Event sponsors Gold’s Gym, Aikido Abu Dhabi, Get Moving Fitness & Spa Centre and SportsOne treated participants to various discounts and promotions. Get Moving Spa & Fitness Center awarded a free one-month membership, and other gifts, to the tournament winners, while SportsOne gave out 10 vouchers worth AED 100 each to redeem for any sports apparel, footwear, or soccer, swimming, biking, team sports and gym equipment at its store.

Sheikh Mohammed’s new book launched with panel debate at AUD The American University in Dubai hosted a fantastic panel discussion to launch the English-language edition of the latest book Flashes of Thought by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. Three of the UAE’s most prominent public figures captivated an audience of more than 900 AUD students and faculty with reflections on Sheikh Mohammed’s school of thought and leadership style. They shared personal stories about working with His Highness at key moments of Dubai’s growth story. The event marked the publication in English of Flashes of Thought, a diverse collection of personal reflections inspired by an audience dialogue session at the Government Summit in February 2013. In the book, Sheikh Mohammed explores the ideas, principles and experiences that have defined his leadership role in the development of Dubai and the UAE, as well as his personal journey as an Arab statesman on the world stage. Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, UAE Minister of Development and International Cooperation, spoke about the role of women in Sheikh Mohammed’s teams and about his unique leadership philosophy. “In my personal journey I believe I was destined to be in the path of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed. I believe strongly in his philosophy that we are all agents of change. The best way to lead change is to be an example: you have to drive it through who you are,” H.E. Sheikha Lubna said. “There are many examples of leaders, but there are very few who transform a whole society. Mohammed bin Rashid’s biggest drive is to create more leaders. As for me, I am a student of leadership at the University of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed,” H.E. Sheikha Lubna said. Cheers and rounds of applause showed that the positive mood had also spread to the audience. AUD students sent more than 400 live comments and questions to the panelists during the event using Twitter and the hashtag #flashesofthought.
Emirati Expressions: Realised new book based upon local artistic excellence Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority has officially launched a new book as part of the third edition of its Emirati Expressions series; ‘Emirati Expressions: Realised’. The book, entitled Emirati Expressions: Realised, documents the artistic vision of this year’s six Emirati artists and their sustained artistic visions over the course of their careers. HE Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan commented: “Contemporary arts have become a key means of expression in the community...they represent memories of space and time, which are working to preserve and deliver to our future generations.” The book provides an in-depth analysis of this year’s artists - Abdullah Al Saadi, Ebtisam Abdulaziz, Layla Juma, Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim and Mohammed Kazem. The book also offers a comprehensive insight into the history of art in the UAE, as well as the previous works and emergence of these artists. Sections of the book include a selection of archival material that documents the path of these artists alongside the growth of the UAE art scene. Emirati Expressions is a curatorial initiative that celebrates the central role Emirati artists play. The current ‘Emirati Expressions: Realised’ exhibition runs until 18 January 2014 and showcases newly commissioned artworks of six established Emirati artists, along with a diverse public programme featuring artists from the wider Emirati art community.
Japenese Pavillion at NAJAH Representatives from several well known Japanese Universities exhibited at the NAJAH Education exhibition, in November. Japan and the UAE are working to strengthen their collaborations in education and business, with Japanese universities promoting the opportunities they provide, for students from the UAE to study abroad in Japan. Graduate and Undergraduate courses are available, but representatives from the Japan International Co-operation Centre also hope that the study abroad opportunities will be a chance for students to learn about both modern and traditional Japanese culture as, well as increasing employability for graduates in both Japan and the UAE. Students are able to undertake Masters degrees, taught in English, or Undergraduate degrees, taught in Japanese after undertaking an additional two years of studying Japanese language. While the most common chosen fields are engineering and mechanics, business and economics courses are becoming increasingly popular. The Japan International Co-operation Centre hopes to increase the number of institutions teaching Japanese in the UAE to help further promote their opportunities for studying abroad.
‘Pencil Me In’ MEFCC workshop For you comic book fans MEFCC is back in April in 2014, and to give us a taste of what is to come next year, they launched a workshop at The Magazine Shop, located in Media City. It was hosted by Stefan Messam, who is not only an art professor at Zayed University, but also the author of the graphic novel Resurrection Lands. Fans of his comics came from all around to Dubai to participate in his workshop. He recreated the characters from his novel and gave advice to all young Manga artists. He also talked through all the work that he has done throughout the years. If you want to see more of Stefan’s work, you will find him at next year’s Comic Con, which will be held in a new location, The Dubai World Trade Center. The dates for this will be on the 3rd-5th of April 2014. Colour and Pageantry Mark 42nd UAE National Day Activities at Masdar Institute A plethora of activities filled with pageantry and colour, powerfully depicting the UAE’s culture and tradition, were organised by the graduate students to mark the 42nd UAE National Day celebrations at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. The day’s activities began with the playing of the National Anthem by students, faculty and staff, and 48 students from Ibn Sina School, Abu Dhabi, as well as in taking the ‘Pledge of Allegiance’ to the UAE Flag. This was accompanied by releasing balloons in UAE colours and the unfurling of the National Flag. Key features at the festivities included a ‘Gallery’ that displayed an image of the Founding Father of the UAE, Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, painted by a student, and video footages of the great leader who built the country into a modern progressive state. A ‘souq’ offered a glimpse into the market of a bygone era, while the features of ‘Old City’ were illustrated through huts with thatched roofs, a grocery and a traditional food section.

When the World Expo started in London in 1851 a breakthrough in international relations took place. A new tradition of modern sophistication was set; countries all over the world went beyond the boundaries to entertain the spectators that flocked to see them. A key meeting point for the global community, the World Expo provides an outlet for nations to share innovations and progress on issues of international importance. Every 5 years, the BIE (Bureau of International Expositions) honours one nation with the chance to host. Dubai, encompassing all the key features of a great host nation, has just won the race for the selection of candidacy for the World Expo in 2020.
Across the nation, locals and expats alike came together, acknowledging Dubai as the ideal candidate for 2020. For UAE residents, the term ‘cultural matrix’ is interchangeable with Dubai. The region acts as a year-round reminder of human potential, defying the odds and going where no man has ever gone before. Just peek outside your window right now and you will be awestruck by the sight of Dubai’s intimidating skyscrapers and futuristic landscape, amazingly occupying the barren desert that housed nomads and Bedouins not so many years ago... So the main question is: what will the World Expo offer Dubai? The UAE has a long history with the World Expo, stretching back four decades to Abu Dhabi’s participation in 1970 in Osaka, Japan. However, the World Expo started long before that in 1851. So, to answer the question of what the Expo can do for Dubai we should look to its history, and its lasting effects on different host nations. On a grassroots level, the World Expo is an international exhibition. Countries rush to the host nation to set up pavilions where they show anything and everything from scientific discoveries to products of industry, new initiatives or art and culture- inviting the audience to embrace their nation’s humble past and present successes and innovations. Albeit informally, the exposition has actually been going on since ancient times, when traders would hold occasional encampments at central crossroads, and entertainers would find a ready, festive-minded audience- much like the anticipating audience of the Great Exhibition borne in 1851...
Timeline of notable World Expos 1851- London, UK • The World’s Fair was born— officially known as the Universal Exposition. • The fair functioned as a platform for nations to showcase their innovations in science and technology. • Modern marvels ranged from the first public toilet to a precursor to the modern-day fax machine.
1889- Paris, France • Commemorated the centennial of the storming of the Bastille — an event that has traditionally represented the start of the French Revolution. • The most revolutionary exhibit was a little project by engineer Gustave Eiffel. At 324 m, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest standing structure in the world. The public said it was an “eyesore” at the time- now it is one of the most iconic structures in the world.
1893- Chicago, USA • Marked the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus. •The expo was notable for being the debut of the Ferris wheel.
Organised by Henry Cole and Prince Albert, husband of the reigning monarch at the time, Queen Victoria, ‘The Great Exhibition’ took place in the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. The fair’s creation, surpassing the nationalistic aims of the creators, cemented Britain’s role as an industrial leader to the entire world. The prestige of the event flourished worldwide, graced by minds that were equally as ‘great’. Charles Darwin, Samuel Colt, and the writers Charlotte Brontë and Charles Dickens are just a few of the most notable spectators at the event. As the global community faces ever more complex and increasingly interconnected challenges, the links between people, societies and ideas have never been more important. We know this as inhabitants of the ‘electronic age’. Open communication is indispensable, especially when paving the way to a future of celebrating milestones in international relations, characterised by the UAE’s theme for Expo 2020, “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”. A World Expo in Dubai would be the first held in the MENASA (Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) region, making it the perfect location for an Expo that, in line with the theme, would serve as a platform for connectivity and for pioneering new partnerships for growth and sustainability. Dubai is not only known as a city of Arabia, but also as a cosmopolitan city of the world. With the UAE’s increasingly pivotal role in the global economy, we know continued progress depends on interaction and cooperation across nations. Dubai already has the ability to bring together people of all backgrounds, nationalities and walks of life; with the innovation and development of this progressive city, Dubai could potentially break Shanghai’s record and attract the greatest number of people in the history of the World Expo.

1970- Osaka, Japan • The first expo to be hosted in Asia. • Notable for screening the first ever I-max film as well as demonstrating early mobile-phone and magneticlevitation technology. • World Expos began adopting themes circa 1939 in the New York World Expo. Each expo adopted specific cultural themes; they forecasted a better future for society. Osaka’s theme: “Progress and Harmony for Mankind.”
2010- Shanghai, China • Marked Shanghai’s new status in the 21st century as the “next great world city”. • It had the largest number of countries participating and was the most expensive Expo in the history of the world’s fairs. • Over 73 million people visited – a record attendance. The expo set a single-day record of over 1.03 million visitors. • Theme: “Better City – Better Life”

Play Station 4 It’s been seven years since Sony last released a new game console, Play Station 3, and now is the time for the gamers around the globe to get those wallets and TVs ready for the Play Station 4. Come December 13th anyone and everyone will be able to purchase the PS4 for AED1,699 for 500GB standalone version. I’ve had some time to play with this beauty and here is what I found. First, Play Station 4 is light, slim and extremely different when you first look at it. Gone are the curvy shapes and lines, replaced with sharp angles and matt/glossy finish-literally making this console the most beautiful Sony has ever built. It is drastically different to the previous PS iterations as well as the upcoming XBox One. The new DualShock 4 controller is extremely comfortable to hold;it features more ergonomic handles along with a light panel at the back (PS4 uses it to identify users) and a rather large trackpad on the front, which is handy and is almost as good as having a mouse. The buttons are well placed and the analog sticks are better due to their rugged edges and concaved tops. The controller also features an in-built speaker and a headphone jack, which should be ideal for video chatting or a more private gameplay. Another fun feature is the ability to stream PS4 games to a Vita. Next is speed, PS4 is everything but slow. It packs a whoppng 8-core Jaguar CPU, AMD Radeon GPU, 8GB of RAM and a 500GB Hard Drive. Due to these configurations, you won’t be able to play PS3 games, nor will you have the support for N802.11AC and 5GHz wi-fi. The positive side of this, however, is the UI is exceptionally fast; PS4 just zooms in and out of options, games, and whatever app it’s in. In the end, this console has a lot of potential; it’s got the horsepower, the design, the mobility and great games that are already available and many more to come. Play Station 4 is clearly built for gaming, with a laser-sharp focus on graphics, excellently built controllers and overall beautiful design. by STEREOHEAD
Gran Turismo 6 (PS 3) Gran Turismo 6 is the twelfth release of the game series and will be staying a PS3 title. It features 71 different layouts of 33 tracks, that means 19 new layouts and seven new locations, including Mount Panorama. There are 1,200 cars to choose from, ranging from rare to common models. A redesigned menu interface is now simpler to use and loads much faster. It also features a new flexible rendering engine that has adaptive tessellation. Celebrating the 15th anniversary of Grand Turismo series, GT6 will feature a festival called “Vision Grand Turismo” with new concept cars by different companies designed for the game.
Metro: Last Light (PC, PS3) Metro: Last Light is a single player, first-person shooter, horror game that picks up right after the ending of Metro 2033: in the year 2034 beneath Moscow’s post apocalyptic ruins. Mankind is overwhelmed by threats from mutants that stalk the catacombs and the skies. Mankind still refuses to stand together in this time of need. Instead they fight against each other for a doomsday device, which is the ultimate power. You are the last hope to stop a war that could wipe out humanity forever.
Battlefield 4: China Rising (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC) With Battlefield 4, the first-person shooter game which came out two months back, Battlefield 4: China Rising is its upcoming expansion. The war is expanded with four multiplayer maps, new weapons, vehicles and gadgets. An Air Superiority mode is introduced as well as ten new assignments with their own unlocks. This game is bound to keep lovers of Battlefield 4 playing for hours on end.
Halo: Spartan Assault (Microsoft Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Xbox 360, Xbox One) Halo: Spartan Assault is a strategic, third-person shooter game. The action takes place between Halo 3 and Halo 4 in a futuristic sci-fi setting, where characters are controlled through virtual joysticks. Although the ceasefire papers have been signed, Draetheus V is still under attack from a Covenant rogue group, ignoring the cease fire command. This version includes 30 different missions and provides the chance to dive even deeper into the history of the Covenant Wars.

Saudi-Turkish DJ Omar Basaad is one of the youngest EDM producers in the Middle East. Starting out at 17 and now the owner of label Loud Recordings, he has become somewhat of a pioneer for dance music in the Gulf. He chatted to us about Creamfields, his inspirations and the development of the Middle Eastern music scene. How do you think the dance music scene in the UAE compares to other Middle Eastern countries? Well, the scene is here I think, since UAE is the center of the Middle East, primarily for reasons like being home to multi-nationals sharing one culture. Every now and then you see the biggest DJs playing here. DJs come here and play new songs, fresh sounds and educate the crowd, so that gives birth to a new scene altogether. Though the situation with local artists really needs to be improved! You are set to perform at Creamfields this month, how important is the event in terms of helping to develop the Middle East music scene? It’s a great thing for the scene especially the growth of EDM around the world. Apart from developing the scene, it helps people get educated musically and brings another culture into it. Seeing those different acts performing new songs for the first time gives people the drive. How is the future of dance music looking regionally? EDM has rocked the world, and with major festivals such as Creamfields it is just the beginning here. There is a lot more to come in the region. What’s your favourite part of making music? The best thing about producing music is creating a sound that’s in my head and bringing it to life. How do you prepare for a set? I start mashing up a couple of tracks and keep a list of them to keep things interesting. Then I have a long list of new ID tracks, and then usually prepare an intro for the show. Lady Gaga Artpop Artpop is an absolute opposite of Gaga’s Born This Way and, oh, we are so happy about this fact. Starting with ‘Aura’ and ‘Venus’, the eccentric singer goes on a mission to get you to dance wherever you are, be it at home or at a club. She wants you moving and she ain’t joking this time! After a few dance-offs with someone (or your own hairbrush in front of a mirror), you’ll find yourself jamming to ‘Do What You Want’, a second single off Artpop that features R.Kelly. As Gaga has stated herself, this song describes how she deals with the aspect of fame and all the criticisms from the international media: “Write what you want Say what you want about me If you’re wondering Know that I’m not sorry Do what you want What you want with my body” - clever Gaga. Overall, this record is full of hits and, to us, is what we have been waiting for since The Fame Monster. The definite tracks are ‘Artpop’, ‘Swine’, ‘Mary Jane Holland’, ‘Fashion!’, ‘Applause’ and ‘Gypsy’.
Britney Spears Britney Jean Britney returns with her eighth studio album following the 2011 success that was Femme Fatale. Let’s start by saying Britney Jean is a party record that is not as personal or experimental as Blackout which, we still think, is the best Brtiney record to date. Starting off with ‘Alien’, Brtiney Jean sounds like a mature record, filled with experience. This feeling of ‘been there done that’ is carried onto two more tracks, ‘Perfume’ and ‘Chillin’ With You’ which features her own sibling Jamie Lynn Spears; the rest of the album is pretty much will’i’am. Britney has said this record is her most personal and closest to her heart, however, frankly , it does not feel personal for the most part. Tracks like ‘It Should Be Easy’, ‘Tik Tik Boom’, ‘Body Ache’ and ‘Til It’s Gone’ will keep you dancing until you drop, effectively making Britney Jean a great workout record. This leads us to a conclusion that either Britney got her studio albums mixed up, or she is simply a very happy, active person who is all about dancing and clubs.

Outstanding musical moments of the film include Cash’s misguided on-stage proposal to June during ‘Burning Ring of Fire’ and his famous performance at Folsom Prison.
This unusual documentary follows two South African fans of Sixto Rodriguez, a musician who, although barely known in his home country, the US, had become hugely popular and influential in South Africa. Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom set out to contact him and discover if his rumoured death is true, determined to find out what happened to their musical hero. The film won multiple awards including an Academy Award and a BAFTA for Best Documentary.
What’s not to love about a musical film made up entirely of Beatles music? Jude, a shipyard worker from Liverpool, travels to America in search of his father who he has never met. He soon gets caught up in the bohemian, rock-androll lifestyle of 1960s New York, against the backdrop of the Vietnam war, and everyone’s lives begin to change forever. Six characters in this artistic film were inspired by Beatles songs, and the evocative music goes a long way in portraying the turbulent and emotional events of the time.

“It’s Muse, how can anyone not love Muse?” The band Muse began to play at 9pm which could be heard even outside the gates by the crowd’s wild cheering and clapping for the artists. The du Arena filled up with the sound of the ‘The 2nd Law: Unsustainable’ – the first song on the Muse set list for the evening. The du Arena is equipped with three big screens that allow the viewers in the back of the arena to see the band members on stage in detail, however, most of the night the screens were used to broadcast scenarios in line with the music. The band Muse is most renowned for their fusion of music genres such as alternative rock, heavy metal, classical, progressive rock and electronica. They are also considered one of the better bands to see live because of their energetic and theatric demeanor on stage. The special effects at the concert brought the crowd to screams and whistles as smoke flared up from the stage and a futuristic screening was shown on all three of the big screens with the three band members in the foreground. On November 2nd, the British band Muse performed at the du Arena on Yas Island. The concert was scheduled as an after-race event once the third race day on the Yas Marina Circuit was finished. As the 20,000 people came pouring into the gates after the race, you couldn’t help but notice that both young and old came to see the band. Mathew Bellamy’s voice, both lead singer and lead guitarist, filled the arena while at the same time jumping around with guitar in hand. His, as well as Howard Dominic’s, the drummer of the band, and Christ Wolstenholme’s, the bass player, enthusiastic movements on stage served to pump the crowd up even more. The three member band brought about an uproar as they played some of the favorite songs such as: ‘Time Is Running Out’, ‘Hysteria’, ‘Panic Station’ as well as an encore of ‘Uprising’ and ‘The 2nd Law: Isolated System’. Several members of the crowd said (on the record): “Muse rocks” and “It’s Muse, how can anyone not love Muse?”
Yasalam ft. Depeche Mode The last day of the Etihad Grand Prix is usually the day nobody should miss, specifically due to the amazing after-race concerts. Following Sir Paul McCartney and last year’s Eminem show, Depeche Mode were scheduled to grace the massive du Arena with their presence this time around. What to expect, one might wonder... The answer is simple: a mind-blowing show. Depeche Mode have been around for ages and, although one wouldn’t normally hear their stuff on the radio, they are a band with a status symbol of electronic royalty. Therefore, it was not much of a surprise to me that du Arena filled up really quickly. After all, Depeche Mode were in town and the crowd was ready. While Depeche Mode did play their massive hits , one thing that stood out was the different sound and overall song arrangements for almost every track. The crowd went totally crazy when ‘Enjoy The Silence’, ‘Personal Jesus’ and ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ came on. One thing I personally loved was the energy Depeche Mode projectected throughout the entire show. Specifically, I loved everything Depeche Mode frontman, Dave Grahan, did; his vocals were astounding and piercing while the moves made it look like he was having the most fun on stage with the crowd trying to keep up. In the end, I felt fulfilled and reminded of the good ol’ school show; Depeche Mode are well past their third decade in show business and it shows. The level of skill and professionalism is just incredible. The vocals and sound were incredibly good, while the visuals were out of this world while still remaning subtle and “just enough”. All in all, this show was great; it left me hoping to see something of this level done by younger performers of modern show business. writing and photos by

For the last weekend of October, the UAE’s biking enthusiasts were out in force for Gulf Bike Week. Arriving on a shining array of custom Harley bikes, the weekend was a first look at the latest models for 2014 from a huge range of makes and sellers.

The afternoon saw Dubai’s skateboarding enthusiasts show off impressive 50-50 grinds; 5-0 grinds; feeble and smith grinds and board slides on the longest skateboard rail in the world, competing for adidas gift vouchers worth 500dhs. Laid back 90s tunes were played and, not only skateboarding, but DJ Demos and Graffiti workshops were in full swing around the venue. The evening event kicked off with great music and live performances from a huge line-up of unique international and global talent. Tim Hassall, who has become well known in the region and has been featured in Rolling Stone Middle East, set a great atmosphere for the rest of the evening as the venue started filling up. The event was cool, unique and definitely unlike other events in Dubai: a unique combination of street style, skateboarding, music and art.
Sandance This time round Sandance pulled together a fantastic line-up including Basement Jaxx, Jamiroquai, Rudimental, Chic featuring Nile Rogers, Richard Durand, Laidback Luke and Martin Solveig. Basement Jaxx got the event off to a great start playing hit after hit, followed by Jamiroquai who was incredibly popular with the crowd. Although slightly more understated than Basement Jaxx, his stage presence was completely captivating and he went down a storm. Favourites such as ‘Canned Heat’ had everyone singing along. Rudimental undoubtedly felt the love from the crowd and got everyone dancing to ‘Waiting All Night’ and ‘Right Here’ as they played a fantastic set. Martin Solveg and Laidback Luke kept the atmosphere going into the early hours. Chic featuring Nile Rogers were a highly anticipated act following the success of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories and the muchloved track ‘Get Lucky’. The performance did not disappoint, and they were clearly a favourite of the evening as the crowd joined in for a resounding rendition of the track they had been waiting to hear! The venue of Sandance was once again one of the best aspects of the evening, especially with the cool weather, and we were fans of the red sparkly hats in particular. It was a fabulous production, as always! We are so excited for New Year which promises to be one of the biggest and best yet with a star-studded lineup confirmed including Emeli Sande alongside Axwell, Pete Tong and Paul Oakenfold. writing by photos by

Culture is a powerful tool that defines humanity. It is a fragile phenomenon, and doesn’t remain constant. Always susceptible to change, cultural patterns are continuously evolving into products of the universal changes in people’s interactions - politically, socially and economically – and youth is undoubtedly the most affected demographic. What sort of medium enables them to convey their emotional bruises? The principal means of expression is music, and Hip Hop’s leaving-nothing-implied lyrics make it an intelligent music genre and movement, charged with truth, reality and freedom. In the wake of the mainstream money-making rappers, Underground Hip Hop has managed to rise and reflect its true essence and purpose.. “Leish Hip Hop?” (Why Hip Hop?) Hip Hop is a culture and form of ground-breaking music and expression. Hip means ‘to know’ and ‘to be aware and updated’. Hop stands for ‘to move’ and ‘to act upon’. An intelligent movement, we can also call it a conscious one. The Hip Hop we listen to on the radio has polluted the true essence and purpose of ‘real’ Hip Hop: money-oriented acts; thirsty-for-publicity ‘artists’; ridiculous lyrics and no real flair. Hip Hop was based on lyrical prowess and was created upon four elements: The MC, The DJ, The B-Boy, and the Graffiti Artist. These parameters have faded away and have almost gone extinct in the mainstream music industry. Although these elements give Hip Hop its character and reputation, popular artists tend to choose the money and corruption path.

Why Hip Hop? Still we ask ourselves, how is our world today? While there are crucial issues jeopardising humanity, some are singing about shopping, ‘bling-bling’, cars, clubbing, and about more explicit matters. Not to say that there shouldn’t be a little fun every now and then, but Hip Hop’s main purpose is to deliver awareness, not foolishness and vulgarity. The rise of a new era for Hip Hop is paving the way for the neglected youth towards freedom. Proofs of this new age are underground artists with solid and intelligent lyrics such as - from the Arabic Hip Hop Movement - Shadia Mansour, LOWKEY, The Narcicyst and Omar Offendum. They are pushing against the loud and frivolous mainstream industry, creating music about corruption, social decay, economical demise and humanitarian neglect. The revamped version of Hip Hop embraces all ethnicities and all social statuses; a universal means of expression, translating real life struggles and experiences into poetry. The underground scene avoids the mainstream, which constrains the outbreak of truth and reality surrounding the world. The artists of the new era exercise their right of freedom of speech and excel in transmitting important issues through deep meaningful lyrics and earcatching beats. Going back to the main question of “Leish Hip Hop?” (“Why Hip Hop?”): it is the name of the first real Hip Hop show on a FM Radio Station in Saudi Arabia. There is no doubt that breaching the mainstream in this manner threatens its fake stability and egocentricity. It is only a matter of time until “Leish Hip Hop” sheds enough light on the issues of the world for people to really listen. Since their formation in 1999 Above and Beyond have carved quite a name for themselves, not only in the genre of EDM, but worldwide. Between their studio albums; record labels; compilations; radio shows Trance Around the World and Group Therapy Radio, they have set a high benchmark for dance music groups and DJs; and, with four awards under their belt, and countless other nominations, they continually remain ones to watch. We chatted with one third of Above & Beyond, Paavo Siljamäki, and here is what we found out. You have been nominated for, and won, so many awards we can’t even count them! How does that feel? It’s always flattering to receive awards, but I find music such a personal thing that I find people’s needs to ‘rank’ art strange. Tell us a bit about the process of creating the Anjunabeats’ compilations? We have a few different kinds of compilations that Anjunabeats release - mainly the Volume and Worldwide series. The Volume series are about us looking into the future of the label’s output and for Worldwide, we invite two exciting names from the labels’ roster to choose their favourites at the time. What first drew you to electronic music? I’ve always been fascinated with technology and started playing music with classical cello and piano. When I began hearing electronic music like Kraftwerk, Jarre & Vangelis my interests with technology and music combined in a way that made me start experimenting with making music like that myself. How do you think the genre has changed since you started? Musically, electronic dance music has gone through several reincarnations since I started listening to it in the early 90’s, but the biggest change has been in how people access and find out about their favourite music. The internet has revolutionised the music industry while computer technology has allowed many more people to create music at home. This has led to a lot more material out there, but finding the music you love is still as much of a challenge as it ever was. Would you say your music has any defining traits? Now looking back, having been writing songs as Above & Beyond since 2000, I feel our defining trait is probably that a lot of our lyrical and musical subject matter is about our real life experiences. We try and create music that creates an emotional connection.

There has been a lot of talk about your acoustic shows, what influenced that decision and how do you think the shows complement the rest of your work? We’ve always thought of ourselves as a band, and have always been wanting to find a way to play our songs live. When Tony introduced us to Bob Bradley, now the musical director of the project, the idea of Above & Beyond Acoustic was born, and we all realised this would be an interesting way to play live as a band. Doing Acoustic has not only been a lot of fun, but has really helped the songwriting aspect for the new artist album we’re currently working on. We also met Alex Vargas, who is now our new male vocalist on our new album, and spending all that time away from computers and nightclubs has also helped us feel more excited about high energy electronic music. You have worked with so many DJs from around the world. Who have you enjoyed working with the most? Andrew Bayer - not only a good friend of ours but also such a talented songwriter and producer. We’ve had the pleasure of working with him since we started working on the Group Therapy album. What has your favourite show been to date? Live or broadcast. Picking just one feels hard as I’ve played hundreds, but one of the ones really close to my heart was our return to Japan where we first played big shows around 2002-2005 and then hadn’t been back for years. We did a show at Ageha in Tokyo not long after the tsunami and earthquakes had touched every Japanese family’s lives, including ours as my wife is from Hitachi. The night felt like Group Therapy on so many levels and totally brought back why we’d fallen in love with the place in the first place.
You have played at both Creamfields, UK and Creamfields, Abu Dhabi. How do you think the two compare and what do you think of the dance music scene here in the UAE? Obviously the one in the UK is the home of Creamfields and one of the great festivals of the world, but it is fully at the mercy of the English weather - one of the things that makes the Abu Dhabi festival truly shine. The hot days and cool nights of the UAE are perfect for evening festivals outdoors and the parties there are also unique as UAE feels like such a super international hub for the whole Middle East. I feel it’s this multicultural mix at the festivals and club nights there that give them their unique flavour. The UAE scene also feels newer than the one in the UK, so there’s this fresh excitement for the whole thing which I love. You guys do a lot of travelling; after Creamfields you are heading on to Japan and Australia! We are dying to know... what are your travel snacks of choice? I’m not a big snack person as such, but I really struggle to walk past a Starbucks without getting a triple shot grande latte… Don’t miss Above and Beyond playing at Creamfields, Abu Dhabi, on December 13 along with a whole host of other amazing acts, like Calvin Harris, The Prodigy and Disclosure.

iPad Air If you are looking for a tablet that’s portable and is built to the highest industrial design standards, or you are simply looking to upgrade your old iPad, look no further. iPad Air is literally the best iPad made to date. Apple has just released its latest iteration of their iconic 9.7” tablet. Let’s start with hardware design. It’s marvelous. iPad Air is a beautiful, blown-up version of iPad mini. The first thing to note is its weight, this thing is light. At 454g the iPad simply dwarfs its competition at being a light tablet with a large screen. Another thing that was iterated on are the side bezels of the tablet; Apple has cut them by half, which effectively made the iPad usable with one hand as well as much easier to carry around. The bottom of the iPad is adorned with two stereo speakers- a first for the 9.7” iPad. While the speakers are great, their location defies their purpose of being stereo, they simply do not provide a proper stereo sound when the iPad is used in landscape. Now about the innards: this light and beautiful tablet is powered by a 64-bit Apple A7 chip which scored a double increase in performance when I ran it through its paces. There is an M7 processor on board too, which basically means the iPad is much smarter now at managing power consumption as well as geo-locating itself. Overall the Air is fast, seriously fast.

Finally the software: this is where Apple needs to step up their game a little. Yes, iOS 7 is a beautiful and functional (to some extent) redesign of the iOS system, it just feels unfinished on the iPad. There are many instances where the apps feel like blown-up versions of their iPhone versions (Notification Center, Calendar, Music and Home Scren Folders I am looking at you). There absolutely has to be a way of keeping more than nine apps in the first page of a Home Folder on a screen this large. Aside from the unfinished feel of iOS 7, which is bound to be fixed in the future updates, the iPad felt more or less complete and zoomed in and out of apps at my will. In the end, Apple showed us they know their game when it comes to producing a beautiful and functional tablet; there is simply no better designed tablet on the market at this screen size. So if you want a tablet for this Holiday Season, iPad Air is the way to go. by

Sony AS30V Action Cam For someone who leads an active lifestyle, the Sony AS30V Action Cam is ideal. The camera is extremely lightweight and compact, even with the waterproof casing; streamlined, for filming at high speeds; and, above all, easy to use with large buttons which are easy to locate and operate – even when in water, wearing gloves, or with the camera mounted to a helmet, for example. The camera footage was extremely smooth: very little movement or shaking, even when walking up and down stairs or jogging. The footage was also sharp and clear with true colouring. Another surprise was the lack of blurring when moving the camera extremely quickly. The Full HD mode can capture videos at 50 - 60 frames per second, with two slow-motion modes and a fast-moving mode to chose from. We caught a great shot of a back-flip from a diving board into a pool, quickly moving the camera from above to below the water. The camera is fitted with WiFi which means that it can be connected to a smartphone device via the free Sony Play Memories app so the device can be used to remotely control the camera and also as a viewfinder. The cameradevice wireless connection remained strong over a long distance, although unfortunately cut out immediately after submerging the camera, even to a very shallow depth, in water. by Greg king

Canon Selphy CP900 This convenient desktop photo printer is a fantastic solution to today’s problems with print photography. Admittedly, upon hearing the word ‘compact’ I was still sceptical about the size, but I was more than pleasantly surprised to find that at 12x17x6cm it folds away neatly and can be kept tidily in the corner of a desk or drawer. It is very simple to use, and can be connected to a computer or laptop as well as having space to connect a USB stick or insert a memory card. Scrolling through the photos can be time consuming as each new page of thumbnails is slightly on the slow side when loading, however, the convenience of the printer means this is basically irrelevant. You can even download an app for your smartphone and use WiFi to print photos as instantaneously as you can upload them to social media. You can finally do away with running out to find a photo kiosk or trimming down A4 sheets of photo paper. For those of you who love to print your favourite photos for the wall or the fridge, or to pop in a photo frame, this printer is ideal. by anaise young
While it is a common knowledge that current lineup of iPhones uses excellent camera technology, Apple hasn’t quite got the hang of more specific options for their mobile lenses; an example would be macro and wide angle lens capabilities. This is where Olloclip comes in: it is a clip-on accessory that features four different lenses (two macro, fish-eye and wide-angle) in one. While constructed from premium materials, Olloclip does weigh a bit and adds a large bulk to the normally slim iPhones. Size aside, those of you who love to experiment with their phone photography will throgouhly enjoy this gadget. The book seems a little dry at the beginning, and is a little repetitive in some parts, but the reader soon falls into its pageturning tempo. The story also brings to light other subjects of the dreadful era. The era of fear when small pox epidemics took the lives of many; when children were abducted and sold by the Indians, and when men wore harsh wounds of battles on their bodies. Through her strong characters, Kent also shows how human relations can change and be the cause of death by only slight misinterpretations and false accusations. With unforgettable details, The Heretic’s Daughter transports you to the old English colonies with barns, farms and Indians. If you are fond of history and good fiction, this book is right up your street. by

We spent some time with him, uncovering the secrets behind his progress, his acquaintances with the other racers and his future prospects with Marussia. Who would you say is a role model to you? Every driver in Formula 1 who wins races and fights for their championships are role models to me. Lewis Hamilton is a great driver, he won championships in his first season which is impressive. Where’s the passion behind the steering wheel? When I came to F1 I was very impressed by the power of the car, and everything was much quicker and much more professional. Everything was better than what I had done before, being in F1 as a professional driver is just an amazing feeling and I don’t want it to stop. What does being inside the car feel like? How do you grasp the adrenaline? It’s difficult to describe. I feel great, just amazing! It’s a strange feeling, it’s like I am where I have wanted to be for a long time.

When did your passion for speed and racing begin? Very early on as I started Karting when I was three. My father owned a go-kart track and everyday I would get home from school and immediately get in a kart, without doing homework – my mother wasn’t very pleased! My father played a big role in influencing me, and helping me progress from karting, up until I was 15 when I started with a single seater in Formula Renault. I don’t come from a rich family but determination allowed me to achieve my success. My father would always say “Work hard, don’t think success will arrive soon, keep calm and keep your feet on the ground.” What are your future prospects? I don’t have a set plan, I just want to improve myself competitively. I just want to improve all the time. I already signed a contract with Marussia for next year. F1 is a difficult sport to get into, there are only 22 drivers and a lot of people wanting to join so I am already a step ahead by being here. I need to prove to people that I have something special in order to stay there. What are your thoughts on your team? Marussia is great, they’re working beneath Ferrari. I worked with Ferrari Driver Academy in Italy and it’s great. They offer me help and advice from the great drivers, such as Alonso. I didn’t know what to expect when I joined Marussia, our only downside is that we don’t have the finance to support our car, performance wise.

Let’s Play Rugby!
The Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens promises to be a fantastic event every year, and this year was absolutely no exception. Three days of intense game-play led up to Fiji’s phenomenal victory on Saturday night, as they defeated South Africa 29-17 in their first ever win in Dubai. It was the third win, in Dubai, for former England coach Ben Ryan who, after signing on to coach the team in September, finally led The Pacific Islanders to victory after them being five times runners-up since Dubai became an event in the HSBC Sevens World Series. Fiji were clearly the favourites after completely dominating New Zealand 44-0 in the semifinals, going on to a 19-0 lead in the first half of the final. Ryan said: “[It’s] brilliant! Hugely pleased for the boys, they’ve been so easy to work with. They’re doing everything I’ve asked them to do and they’re working very hard, so this is a great start for them. I saw in the changing rooms they were going to put on a show...and zero penalties, two rucks – it was awesome!” He added, “I need to make sure we get next week right, and this wasn’t a one off.” New Zealand won the third place play off 17-14 over England; Argentina took home the Plate with a strong performance, defeating Wales 21-5; Australia won the Bowl title against a persistent Portugal 17-12; and France claimed the Shield defeating Spain 28-17.

Women’s IRB World Series Meanwhile, the Women’s IRB World Series was one incredible tournament to watch! Australia took home the cup in a stunning defeat against New Zealand and one of the greatest comebacks in Sevens Rugby history! Down 22-0 in the first half, Australia fought their way to a phenomenal win, with a final score of 35-27.

It was an event of firsts for the Australian Women’s team. Rachel Crothers made a fantastic debut in her first ever World Series tournament, scoring seven tries – three of them in the final. It was also the first tournament under coach Tim Walsh and the first tournament win for the team in the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series. “It’s not a fluke, the girls have worked really hard on their core skills,” said Australian coach Tim Walsh.“We’ve been progressing the whole way through preseason. But every team is going to up their game going into the next round of the series, and we just gotta keep working.” Australian captain Sharni Williams was equally delighted: “We had a little bit in the tank at the end of the game. We were missing a lot of tackles, but when we got our hands on the ball we felt strong and we attacked. Our conditioning has definitely paid off.” Canada took third place defeating Russia 10 – 15.
UAE National Schools Trophy There was a huge sense of pride around pitches 2-7 as this year’s Sevens tournament saw the inaugural UAE National Schools Trophy. VDEC played gallantly, but STS Al Ain Wolves came to a roaring victory, winning 33-5 in the final. Two second-half tries were scored by Ali Mabkhot Alkorbi as well as tries from Abdullah Ateeq Al Dhaheri, Abdullah Mubarak Al Hajri and Abdallah Rashed Alsheikili. It was an exciting game with the final try scored as the final whistle blew. Dr William Pedley was ecstatic about the win: “It’s a fantastic honour to be the first winner of this tournament,” he said. “We’re all very proud. I’m very satisfied. We’ve come a long way in a very short time. In 18 months these guys have gone from zero to a very accomplished rugby side.” Pedley also added that they are aiming for next years’ Under-18 Gulf competition: “We are taking rugby very seriously in the school.” Eight schools from around the UAE participated in the tournament including Al Maarif, Sharjah Youth Centre, Al Safa, Al Sharawi, Al Wuheida and Al Ain Mixed. Vice President of the UAE Rugby Federation, Faisal Al Zarooni, has spoken about the Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens as another opportunity to build on the growing enthusiasm for the game throughout the UAE. He said: “The UAERF will continue attaining its goal of 5000 Emirati youth playing rugby on a weekly basis by the end of 2016.” Judging by the success of this year’s inaugural tournament, it is a goal the UAE is well on the way to attaining!
Gulf U18s The Gulf U18 teams always put on some of the best performances of the weekend, and this year Dubai College and Dubai English Speaking School battled their way to Pitch 1 for a ferociously fought final on Saturday. DESC played a fantastic game, only narrowly missing out to DC by two points; final score 19-17 to a proud Dubai College.
And All the Rest Needless to say, no Rugby Sevens would be complete without the crowds, and this year the lovers of fancy dress outdid themselves. From Oopa Loompas and Willy Wonka to giant domino pieces; 1960’s enthusiasts; Sombreros, and multicoloured wigs costumes were big, bold, fun and colourful. There was tons of fun happening throughout each day and, of course, the Aggreko dynamos put on a very sparkly show to the much-loved Sevens musical medleys. You’ve damaged your hair... I know, I know. You got excited over your new straightener, dyed your hair a few too many times, or stayed under the sun for too long. Good news! You can repair your hair without having to chop it off. Although the only way is to achieve complete repair is to trim your hair, you can still add some flexibility, shine and strength with these easy tricks. I used to blow dry my hair every day for a year and it got terribly dried up. Since I didn’t want short hair, I searched everywhere to find a treatment or solution to make my hair soft again. Follow any of these tips if you have fried hair:

Rinse your hair with a cup of milk. Keep it on for 20 minutes then shower off; make sure to wash your hair really well. You will feel the difference in your hair immediately. Before I tried this my hair was so dry that even a hurricane wouldn’t move my hair out of place, but after I applied milk for the first time, my hair became so soft that it would fly without any wind! Mix a few drops of olive oil with yogurt. Be careful not to put too much oil in order not to have greasy hair. Keep the mixture on for 20 minutes then wash with shampoo. Mix egg whites with water and honey and apply to damp hair. Leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Sounds nasty, but I heard that this really works! Spread mayonnaise on your hair overnight and then rinse in the morning. Try to use the lowest heat setting on your straightener and after swimming in salt or chlorine water shampoo your hair as soon as possible, this will stop the salt or chlorine drying your hair too much.

One common issue for people with dry hair is the question of hairdryers. I swore off them a long time ago: although drying naturally usually initially gives me puffy, untruly hair, using a hairdryer tends to double this effect. Nanoe technology, however, caught my attention and I decided to give hairdryers another go.

What this technology essentially means for hair-care is that it helps to minimise the damage which heat does to your hair by simultaneously drying it but also helping it to retain moisture by blowing nano-sized water particles back towards your hair. At first, I admit I was sceptical. How can something which shoots moisture back towards your scalp still dry your hair? Well, dry your hair it does, and my hair genuinely felt extremely silky and smooth afterwards. I was surprised to find it was actually an improvement on my naturally dried hair. The hairdryer comes equipped with three different nozzles for quick-drying, styling and diffusing. It has classic hair-drying features: separate settings for speed and heat, and a button for blasts of cold air. The only downside to this product is its size and weight. It’s definitely not an easily portable product, especially with all three nozzles, so taking it for weekends away or on holiday, for example, wouldn’t be practical. This being said, when I say I am impressed I mean it absolutely sincerely! It is a great investment for anyone in need of a little extra help to combat dry hair and anyone who has had difficulty drying hair but retaining, rather than reducing, moisture.
