FIFA Summer Football, football and more football is what we are looking forward to this summer. With Ramadan (p.56) right around the corner the timing is perfect to get all our friends together and cheer for our favourite teams after Iftar. Get those T-shirts ready (p.22) for fun nights out or Sohour nights in with good friends and amazing food (p.46). It’s time to relax and take it easy; listen to music (p.10), check out fashion blogs (p.30), clean out your smart phones (p.38) and make sure your social media is up to date (p.58). With the heat kicking in we tend to get a little lazy and hang around the house for a little too long. We need a good push to get us to get out there and work out. How about doing something completely new this summer (p.48) and pushing that comfort zone? Or get inspired by our cover story and train for a triathlon (p.32)? Enjoy your vacation; get together with good friends, share, love, laugh and celebrate. We are looking forward to a wonderful summer. FIFA summer here we come!

Goal

Little Miss Sunshine

Midnight In Paris

Cast: Kuno Becker, Alessandro Nivola, Anna Friel

Cast: Abigail Breslin, Alan Arkin, Steve Carrell

Cast:Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard

With cameo appearances by football superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham, Goal is the perfect movie to watch before the upcoming World Cup. The first of a trilogy, it follows Santiago Munez, a Mexican-American gardener by day and a skilled footballer by night. Munez is discovered by a former Newcastle United player who whisks the young footballer to England to play for the Magpies. Munez excels as a player, but will his new life off the pitch lead to his downfall?

Little Miss Sunshine is the directorial debut of husband and wife team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Farris. The movie documents a dysfunctional family living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When the youngest member of the family, Olive, gets news that she has been selected as a finalist in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in California she is ecstatic. However, the family doesn’t share this enthusiasm as they load up their cramped yellow Volkswagen Bus and make the two-day journey up north, full of hilarious mayhem. The quirky banter between characters and feel-good vibe of the movie makes it a great watch for the entire family.

This Academy Award winning romantic comedy released in 2011 does not limit its characters to travelling the world. Set in Paris, Owen Wilson plays a tourist and screenwriter who miraculously travels back in time every night. Wilson encounters magnificent ballets, parties and even meets Ernest Hemingway. His tales of the previous night are always met with skepticism from his wife and in-laws who, naturally, don’t believe him. A funny, light-hearted watch.

Album Reviews Lindsey Stirling Shatter Me

Lindsey Stirling is by far one of the most talented artists I have ever come across. She is an American violinist, dancer, performance artist, and composer, and mixing the violin with the modern sound of Dubstep. In 2010, Stirling was a quarter finalist on America's Got Talent becoming a YouTube sensation with her hit Crystallize as well as several cover collaborations. Shatter Me positioned at number one on the US iTunes charts and was second on Billboard 200. It contains her hits ‘Night Vision’, ‘Swag’, ‘Heist’ and, of course, ‘Shatter me ft. Lzzy Hale’. Our favorite track would have to be 'Beyond the Veil', symbolising true beauty and revolutionising the way people veiw the violin. by Liné van Zyl

Coldplay Ghost Stories Coldplay's sixth album, Ghost Stories, is a shift in musical direction from the superband and offes a more personal reflection of the band's emotions making it relatable to the masses. There are evocative and powerful tracks throughout the album touching on powerful topics. They've gone back to their roots with the feel of the ablum similar to the hugely popular single ‘Yellow’, which catapulted them onto the international scene. Although their last album Mylo Xyloto was met with mixed reviews, critics claiming it was under par, this toned-down and thoughtful album will certainly make up for it. Listeners will be hooked from the first track, ‘Always in My Head’, and the final track, ‘O’ are the most inspiring. The attention to detail is summed up well by the album’s cover art created by Mila Fürstová. The angel wings (made up of images including white doves, a circular maze and a window looking out onto an incoming tornado) aptly reflect the heartbreaking, lonely and often eerie beauty of the album. by Liné van Zyl

Michael Jackson Xscape The most important task when crafting a posthumous album is keeping the artist’s legacy intact. No musician’s notoriety can parallel that of the King of Pop. The burden of this huge task fell squarely on the shoulders of executive producers L.A. Reid, John Branca and Timbaland. The trio, along with scores of other producers, have been able to craft an album befitting of the untouchable Michael Jackson. Featuring deep synths, groovy baselines and a very upbeat vibe, Michael’s youthful voice shines on the opening track ‘Love Never Felt So Good,’ which features Justin Timberlake. Tracks like ‘Loving You’ and ‘Xscape’ are in keeping with the classic MJ essence of the Thriller days but will still appeal to current music tastes. The track ‘Do You Know Where Your Children Are’ offers some serious social commentary, something Michael was also known for with his earlier tracks like ‘Earth Song’, ‘Black or White’ and ‘They Don’t Care About Us’. Although the verse was written 30 years ago, the song is still very much relevant today. This album is an excellent ode to Michael’s second-to-none career and gives us a glimpse at the music MJ would be making if he were still with us.

Movies

Maleficent The movie is similar to the original fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, but Disney spared no expense in adding a few plots twists to captivate the audience and keeping them on the edge of their seats. The scenes were perfectly executed, mixing violence, hatred, betrayal, peace, tragedy and love - balancing them all out and toying with the audience's emotions. The movie also strikes a perfect balance between reality and fantasy and manages to induce an atmosphere of awe and wonder for both children and adults alike. After a period of inactivity in the film industry, Angela Jolie was fantastic as Maleficent, an innocent girl who was used and betrayed by a man who was seduced by power, ambition and greed. She portrays the shift in her character's emotions brilliantly as she evolves to survive the betrayal. Disney have truly outdone themselves, creating a detailed and imaginative world which is both magical and mystical, allowing the viewers to become compltely immersed in the film. This film proves that Disney have can step it up a notch and that fairytales aren't just for kids. by Francis D’souza

Godzilla Godzilla is the monster hit of 2014 . It delivers everything from the original classic with a new, fresh twist. Although many have argued who the real villan of the movie is, it is difficult to put the villain label squarely on the giant shoulders of Godzilla. The CGI and sound effects were incredible; making you feel like you were in the movie. Also, the amount of detail which was put into the visuals for the charachter Godzilla was especially impressive, heralding a breakthrough in animation. Alongside the giant monster attacks, the movie also has an interesting plot starting with the dramatic loss of Joe's wife driving him to find out the reason behind what really happened. Then there is Ford and the pain he goes through when he is unable to find Ella at the hospital center and thinks that his father is going insane. You can’t take your eyes off the screen throughout the entire movie. It is definitely one of Gareth Edwards’ best works. by Liné van Zyl

Who Is the Arkham Knight? With the recent news of the newest instalment in the Batman: Arkham franchise, and the killer trailer to back it up, there is one burning question that every avid Arkham fan is asking. Who is the Arkham Knight? Everyone can’t help but speculate what twisted soul hides behind the cold, metallic cowl of this militarised Batman clone. First off, we can see that he dons a heavily armoured suit à la Iron Man. Engraved into the chest is an Arkham ‘A’, where he gets his namesake from. The helmet has two slits emanating blue light where his eyes would be, and he comes locked and loaded with holsters and pouches all over the armour. Rocksteady have made it clear that you won’t want to mess with this bad boy (or should I say ‘bat’ boy?). Next, we have the statements from Rocksteady claiming that the Arkham Knight is an ‘all new’ character created by them in collaboration with DC. For some reason, however, no one seems to believe him and, in classic internet fashion, this is where the wild and wonderful theories come in. Theory number 1: Arkham Knight is Red Hood. This is a popular theory among those unfamiliar with the comics. In the comics Red Hood (Jason) is a vengeful Robin set on defeating the Caped Crusader. He was resurrected by Talia al Ghul and angry that Batman did not avenge his death when he was killed by The Joker. Going deeper, we know for certain that Jason is in the ‘Arkhamverse’. In addition to that, both wear armoured suits and the Arkham Knight’s red markings are similar to Red Hood’s colour scheme. However, those who have read the comics will be aware of the discrepancies in this theory, which has led me to my best guess that Red Hood, or Jason, wants to help rather than hunt the Dark Knight. Theory number 2: Arkham Knight is Hush. This is another popular theory, and one less easily debunked. He was featured previously as part of a side-mission, in which he used plastic surgery to look like Bruce Wayne, and has collaborated with various villains in futile attempts to defeat Batman. In Batman: Arkham Knight, Scarecrow has assembled Gotham’s greatest villains to take down the Bat, once and for all. Could Hush really be pulling the strings from behind the scenes, under the guise of the Arkham Knight? The fact that Hush is intelligent, an expert marksman and a martial artist support the theory that the bandaged thief could well be the man we’re looking for. There are many other theories of who could be concealed under the armour of the Arkham Knight: Wrath, Azrael, The Joker (or a clone of him?) as well as Batman’s brother - we have barely scratched the surface of this mysterious new character’s potential identity. The video Batman: Arkham Knight – Who is the Arkham Knight? by Batman Arkham Videos dives even deeper into the investigation and should satisfy the excitement of fans until all is revealed this October. We can hardly wait... by Tom Drew

Destiny (PS3, PS4, XBOX 360 and XBOX One) Slated for a September 2014 release, Destiny has already broken records without even hitting the shelves. It surpassed Grand Theft Auto as the most expensive video game ever produced at a whopping $500 million (more than 1.8 billion AED). Set across the galaxy several hundred years in the future, Destiny will be a new experience for players. The platform is a first-person, action role-playing game that will also have multiplayer capabilities, allowing users to play with and against people across the globe. Destiny will also allow its users to fully customise their characters and choose to play as a Human, Awoken or Exo, which all have unique characteristics. What sets the game apart from most other MMO games is its uniquely dynamic experience: both the events in the game and the match making are random, allowing for a different experience each and every time. Destiny will be produced by Bungee, the developer also known for its Halo series, and is already set to be what could be an unparalleled success.

Super Smash Bros (Nintendo 3DS, Wii U ) Six years following the release of Super Smash Bros Melee, Nintendo is at it again and will be releasing the fourth Super Smash Bros game at the end of this year. Following a similar format to the previous games, up to four players battle it out to try and knock each other off of the map. Characters can use their fist, feet, tails or even interact with objects like Pokeballs and Super Mario Mushrooms to win. Fans of the series will recognize the usual cast favorites like Kirby, Yoshi, Pikachu and Princess Peach, plus more additions from the Nintendo universe including Megaman, the Pokemon Greninja as well as the Wii Fit Trainers. This edition will also include an online mode divided into two different match types: “For Fun” or “For Glory”. This fun, competitive fighting game will be available in August.

The Evil Within (PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC) Known as Psychobreak in Japan, this upcoming horror survival game is sure to have gamers holding their breath. From recently released screenshots, the game is already gaining comparisons to other third person survival games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil. The plot follows Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners when they show up to a crime scene under an eerie presence. After Castellanos is knocked unconscious, he wakes up in a parallel world inhabited by monsters. Now he must do whatever it takes to survive and ensure the survival of his partners. The game’s primary focus is the single player campaign. With life like graphic and fluid CGI, all the efforts of Tango Gameworks guarantee that The Evil Within will have you jumping out of your skin this August.

A Week In the Wardrobe of… The Shades and Scarf photos by

Belle Foronda

Ushi Sato was born and raised in the Philippines. Influenced by his father, a tailor, he had a flair for designing and constructing clothes from a young age. He moved to Dubai in 2009 to join a famous fashion house as a couturier. Now, he spends his days as a designer, fashion consultant and buyer and updates his blog in his free time. “I blog about what I see and what I wear, so it seemed fitting to name the blog accordingly,” said Ushi; The Shades and Scarf began as a way to communicate with his friends back home, but since, it has evolved into something much bigger – a library of unique fashion styling, tips and designs. “I started The Shades and Scarf because I have something to share. Being a blogger is about how you can relay a message and have readers relate. A blog is an honest voice and a raw imagination.” The blog only helps me get more creative, share my knowledge and experiences as well inspire people. Blogging is a serious hobby, just like some people who love to collect cars. "Being a blogger, it's like collecting ideas, creativity, great experiences and good friends then sharing it with the world through a blog post", he explains.

Sunday It’s a major day of the week and I usually have a lot of stuff to bring with me to the office so I often carry everything with me in a huge bag. The bag always has an extra outfit that I call the S.O.S look so that I have something ready in case I have a sudden fashion meeting or event. I’m a big fan of denim so I mostly like to play around with that style. Bag is available at www.eddiehandmade.com.

Monday In this look, I am wearing this interesting basic button-down by a newly discovered local talent, by Wekafore (Available at www. bywekafore.bigcartel.com). It’s very clean and sharp, and white is especially great for summer. My shoes are the latest from Lacoste - Summer Court Attack Limiteds they also use an interesting shiny material and unique colour combination.

Tuesday Tuesday is my errand day. I usually dress in a very comfortable, on-the-go style. A button down shirt paired with a basic tank top is a perfect relaxed outfit that I can pull off when I'm busy and feeling too lazy to think of what I'm going to wear. I also prefer light weight footwear. These Le Coq Sportif Arthur Ashe Limited Edition shoes have been my favourites recently - perfect for meetings in different locations and running errands in comfort and style.

Wednesday This is my adventurous style day. Sometimes, after work, I shop for/ with a client. I tend to surprise them with my (sometimes) crazy looks by wearing unexpected pieces. My blogging agency actually defines my style as "Hybrid": outfits in a man’s perspective but choosing to mix in softer pieces; accidentally, reasonably or intentionally, like bags, shoes or accessories.

Thursday It's the day where I can be both super busy and relaxed. Busy finishing work loads for the week and preparing for the weekend. I recently began wearing over-sized shirts and channelling James Dean, very retro and rough.

Friday I consider Friday "My Day". You will usually find me at home, spending the day watching movies, munching on popcorn and lounging in my PJ's.

Saturday I can either be in the office working alone, or chilling with friends. Either way, a laid-back and stylish outfit like this one is perfect, especially for the hot summer months.

Cover Story

Omar N Omar Nour had never played sports at an elite level before the age of 29. Now, he’s one of the most popular and successful triathletes in the Middle East, and is well on his way to Rio 2016. The minute he walked into the one8one office, his positive energy was palpable. His business card reads: ‘Omar Nour. Pro Triathlete & Motivator’, and it could not be more accurate. A passionate advocate of staying true to yourself and living a healthy lifestyle, Omar’s story is an inspiring one, and it’s difficult to meet him without feeling motivated to go out into the world, pursue happiness, achieve your dream, and get active.

What made you decide to become a professional athlete? I like to talk a ton, so this question is going to be long, are you ready? I’m going to go for it! I started out pre-med at John Hopkins doing a triple major in Biology, French and Neuroscience. My college advisor said I couldn’t do it with my grades and when I came back after graduation with my triple major all like, "Here you go, BOOM!" He didn’t even remember me. My entire life was pinpointed on one thing: getting a triple major to prove a guy wrong who didn’t even remember who I was. That brings me to a point that I really enjoy talking about: I think people put a lot of pressure on youth to figure out what they want to do in life. Being comfortable with the unknown is a unique skill, and I think the most interesting people don’t know what they want to do with their lives. It takes time to figure out your path, and changing paths is okay. Anyway, I wanted to take some time off before medical school. My parents are Egyptian, so you go to them and say “I want to be a doctor,” and they are like: “Oh, habeebi, of course! Yallah!” (laughs) They don’t ask questions like, “Are you sure you want to be a doctor?” they think it’s great! Then you graduate from Hopkins with Honors and say, “Oh, I want to take time off and find myself.” Thankfully, my parents are cool and they just said, “Don’t do anything for us, do it for yourself.” So, I was 21 and didn’t know what I wanted to do. I was VP of my class at Hopkins and that’s sort of like business, so I started my first company. It failed miserably! Then my brother and I took a massive risk and started a business that we still own today. Now, people tend to look at the outcome and say “oh, that’s awesome” because it looks all pretty at the end, but there are times that are really tough. We were so stressed out. I was eating super unhealthily, not working out, drinking way too much coffee, not sleeping at night. I gained so much weight, and I ripped my suit pants twice getting into my car. I realised something had to change. A buddy of mine told me he was doing this thing called a triathlon. You swim 1.5km, you bike 40km, and then you run 10km. I thought it sounded like the kind of thing you do once and brag about at parties, so I said, “yeah okay, sign me up!” and he goes, “dude, you’re fat!” and I’m like, “dude, seriously, I got this!”

our

So he signed me up and my first triathlon was in Washington DC. I absolutely loved it. The Mayor of Washington DC was there and we ended up exchanging details, which was crazy! Over the next few years we trained together and became absolute best friends. There I was 29 years old, cycling and running with the mayor and it was just cool, I was having a good time. Eventually, my brother sat me down and said, “What are you doing? You’re swimming and cycling and running all the time and I’m running the company, what’s up?” He said, “I’ll run the company, but then you take triathlons seriously and go to the top, to the Olympics.” It’s a typical example of ignorance is bliss. I believe that if you know your limitations, you will just work up to those limitations, but I had no clue what it would take, the sacrifice and the learning curve. I didn't know anything about this sport. A lot of people thought it was unrealistic, but I didn't listen to anybody, I hired a coach, started to train, and moved to Boulder Colorado, to train in Altitude.

How does Altitude help? Altitude is awesome. Oxygen is carried by red blood cells so when you train in altitude, your body creates more red blood cells due to a lack of oxygen, so when you come down to sea level, POOF, you fly. writing by

linÉ Van Zyl & Shaikha Al Salman What’s the best thing about what you do? photos by Anton Rodionov I tried so hard to make it to London, but I wasn’t fast enough yet. A lot people thought it would be over after that, but at some point it stopped being about the destination and became about the journey. People do something that I call ‘deferring happiness’. In high school you think ‘when I get to college life will be good’, then in college you think ‘I’m so jealous of all the guys making money’, then you make money and want to make more. It’s never ending. I was talking to a buddy of mine, Omar Sumrah – he trained for 12 years and climbed Mount Everest, and he said on his way back down he started to feel this depression. He had been so focused on one singular thing that reaching it couldn’t match all the sacrifices and all the hard work he’d put in. He realised he had forgotten to enjoy the process. The reason I now care about winning is to allow myself a bigger platform to make positive changes and that has become my main focus. I came to TryYas, an event in Abu Dhabi, and Sam O'Shea who won the youth triathlon dedicated his win back to me – after I had spoken at his school. That changed everything. If I can inspire just one kid out of 40 to change, that’s enough. Who cares if you go from fat to fit? So what at the end of the day, when I can spend 20 minutes talking to a group of kids and potentially have changed one or two lives? What advice would you give people in the UAE who want to get fit? A lot of people say they can’t work out in the UAE because the Middle East is not meant for working out. It’s kind of like saying ‘the dog ate my homework’. I’m training for the Olympics and six months a year I’m in the UAE training. Swimming is my weakness, I've worked with so many experts from all over the world and I haven’t been able to break my swim time down. I started to work with a group here and dropped my 1.5km by 2.5 minutes, which is huge! There are phenomenal resources here and people don’t realise! TrainYas at Yas Marina circuit have almost 3000 people participating a week, and GoYas on Wednesdays is just for women. It’s fun and exciting to get involved and create this healthy living community.

“People have to be forgiving of themselves. Everything is what you make it, whether that’s at a professional level or not”

What are the steps from here to qualifying for the Olympics? It’s a two year process; you fly all over the world competing in races in a circuit called the International Triathlon Union. Where your place in those races gives you points, which gives you a ranking, and, depending on that, there’s different ways of qualifying for the Olympics. It’s very cool, but I don’t want to paint it into a super glamorous thing. Wherever I train, I always look for the restaurant with the safest looking food, choose a dish, then if I don’t get food poisoning I eat that dish every single day until the race so I don’t risk getting sick.

Has that ever happened? Yes! You get sick or you get a flat (laughs). You’ve travelled thousands of miles, you've trained, you’ve swum, the crowd’s going “aaahhh!”, and then you get on the bike and – pfff, flat tyre! You have to go with the flow and accept things with this sport. People think sports must be so intense and take it to the extreme. I call it ‘New Year Resolution Syndrome’: “I’m gonna go to the gym three times a day, I will not eat fat, I will not eat sugar.” That never happens. They eat carbs and then go, “It’s over, why even go to the gym?” People have to be forgiving of themselves. Everything is what you make it, whether that’s at a professional level or not.

New Tech

Samsung Galore Samsung Galaxy S5 After a much awaited release, the 5th edition to Samsung’s galaxy series is finally here. The phone’s new ‘dimple’ design on the back makes it easier to grip and the combination of the marvelous 5.1” display and the 2.5GHz quad core processor makes this phone one of the smoothest and fun to use on the market. The highlight of this new edition has to be the camera, if doubling the megapixels wasn’t enough; the new fast Auto Focus and selective focus affords the user an effect similar to an expensive SLR camera except it can fit in your pocket. Several new features have been introduced such as the ultra-power saving mode. When you next find yourself with 10% battery and no charger, you might wish you had the S5. The fingerprint scanner has enabled the S5 to compete at the same level as other phones like the iPhone 5S as that is a make it or break feature for some consumers. Download Booster is another innovation enabling faster download times as it uses the LTE and Wi-Fi connection simultaneously. To top it all off the S5 is IP67 certification, which means that it is dust and water-resistant. Talk about nicknaming the S5 the S4S has been quite popular on many blogs, however the added software features make up for the lack of hardware improvements. Overall, a very user-friendly phone, with fantastic value for money. Samsung Gear 2 The Gear 2 has made an unexpected appearance this year as the previous model was released just months prior, causing those who bought the first edition to groan in despair at the more refined edition. Instead of running Android it now runs on Tizen, the OS developed by Samsung, and they have moved the camera from the strap directly to the main body of the watch. This allows for ‘personalisation’ of the Gear 2, which was one of main flaws in the previous model. Taking advantage of the allocated space for the camera, they have now put in an IR blaster alongside the 2.0 Megapixel camera, permitting the control of your TV and set top box from the watch itself. Samsung has attempted to portray the Gear 2 as a standalone device by offering a 4GB storage allowing users to store music as well as pictures for by Nathan Menezes convenient access. By making the device IP67 certified and improving the battery life substantially, it allows it to be 24/7 wearable and more desirable. There are alternatives like Sony’s Smartwatch 2 and the Pebble Steel, but due to Samsung’s professional look and its added features like the IR blaster, it just pips the rest. If you are still having doubts, Samsung has introduced the Gear 2 Neo, which offers fewer features but makes up the difference in the price. Samsung Gear Fit Targeted at the more physically active users. The interface is clean and simple to use; a concept that Samsung has constantly avoided, bombarding users with countless applications. With the 1.84” curved Super AMOLED display it does sit quite comfortably on your wrist and after a couple of days you probably won’t even notice it. It’s more a fitness device than a smartwatch. It has a built in pedometer, timer, stopwatch, heart rate sensor and a sleep monitor. Although it has no storage for music the Gear Fit does have a media controller that syncs up to your phone and allows you to change tracks, search and change the volume, which can be incredibly useful when going for a jog. The look and feel of the Gear Fit is probably the closest you can get to what the market is looking for but there are some aspects in the software that could do with some improvement, which we could see in the coming weeks.

“Distinction, it’s what makes us different and when we are able to infuse that into our work that’s when we can make our own mark”

Musician

Rouba Zeidan, known by her stage name Roobaz, is a soul singer and composer born in Lebanon and raised in the United Arab Emirates. Making her official debut in 2013, Rouba is a famous jazz singer perfoming covers in the region’s popular venues. What drove you to become a musician? Were your parents an influence? At a very young age I used to run off into corners to listen to and record music. Then my parents got involved, pushing me to learn the piano and the guitar and I never really took it up properly but I was always drawn to music my parents used to listen to. They had a huge library so I used to go through their LP’s and watch documentaries on Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley and I was fascinated by lifestyle, personalities and messages behind the musicians. The music industry is a tough industry to get into. What advice would you give to people seeking to enter the music industry? Distinction, it’s what makes us different and when we are able to infuse that into our work that’s when we can make our own mark. No one sounds like you. I would definitely advise them to research their influences, figure out who they are musically, write their own material until they find a sound and are happy with it. It’s a work in progress. The only way you can remain true to the artistry is by communicating and understanding your own evolving identity. Be true to you. How personal are your songs? Music is my refuge so whenever I write it’s what I am feeling at the time so when I wrote this particular album “Mama’s Back” it was about what was happening in my life at the time and the album name reflects the return to music after a long absences. It’s a vent. I don’t feel like oppressing my thoughts is a productive way to live. I am very comfortable being open and so my music can sometimes be extremely personal. I would like my work to have more depth than just music you listen to on the radio. This is something I am passionate about. I recently did an autism awareness event and it felt amazing. It wasn’t about money, the audience or me. It was about helping this kid send the message that music therapy is so effective. He went from sitting on the couch in total introversion to singing a Katy Perry sound at full blast. The transformation was miraculous and I definitely want to be doing more of that. You spent eighteen years working in the corporate world – what made you come back and what are your plans for the future? It was a great experience and I am someone that appreciates everything that happens in my life as it did, when it did. I have no regrets. I was busy becoming more confident, finding out who I wanted to be and what I wanted from life. One thought that terrified me was waking up thirty years from now at a dining table with some people and have someone ask me to sing a song for old times sake. That terrified me because that means that your dream is buried six feet under. Its gone, there is no way you can bring it back and I didn’t want that to happen. The fear of regret, but used positively. With a busy schedule keeping you on your toes, what do you typically do in your free time to relax? I am very disciplined with my time so I never delay something that I need to do today unless I am willing to die knowing that I didn’t do it. I try to be very productive with my days. When I have free time I am very much family and nature orientated. I value going to a beach, putting down a towel and playing with my kids. The simplest of things, I try to detach, I try to connect with my kids, to be there with them and enjoy the moment.

Amani Al Shaali by

Shaun van der Linden

“ I wanted to change; I wanted to get better. I’ve found something I love which makes me happy”

It’s no surprise that Emirati photographer Amani Al Shaali is moving up in the art world. Although she only began to take photography seriously seven months ago the quality of her work is astonishing. The subject of each photograph is a female with a distinctly dark and mysterious ether about it. The subject’s face is rarely seen and is often masked by vivid red hair in desolate, lifeless surroundings; a whirl of emotion and imagery is finely tuned to create well balanced pieces. Her work at The DIFC Art Beat in March, earlier this year, shone through the crowd and since then she has received plaudits in the UAE and abroad for her skills including the Emirates Photography and the United Photographers International in the Creative & Experimental category. The sky is the limit for Amani and she’s bound to reach it. How did you get your start in the world of photography and how do you feel you’ve changed since you started? I’ve been photographing since I was 13 when I got a camera and I began taking photos of everything and anything. A few years later, I discovered websites like Flickr and DeviantArt and started getting into conceptual photography. Then last November, I attended a Brooke Shadens workshop with GPP and I realised I wanted to do Fine Art photography.

To see more of Amani's work check out her site: www.amanialshaali.com

Honestly, everything has changed since I started to take it seriously. A few years ago I was diagnosed with depression and I almost gave up on everything, but when I attended the workshop, the combination of the photography and Brooke as a person inspired me tremendously and made me feel like I wanted to change; I wanted to get better. I’ve found something I love which makes me happy. To create something out of nothing is just amazing and it was also a great outlet to take out the darkness in me and turn it into something that can be seen, and that helped a lot. How many shots would you estimate you use to make one of your photographs? It depends, for example, a piece I created using birds contained a lot of photos. This is because it was difficult to capture the girl in the pose I wanted in just one photograph, so a photo of her upper half and another of her lower half were blended together. I couldn’t get the dress in the correct position, and each bird is an individual photo. There were also photos of the surrounding area which I stitched together to make bigger, and then the clouds, so all in all it was 20 photographs. Do you have a favourite subject or location that you like to shoot? Yes, I probably overuse that location! There is a place on the way Umm al Quwain, I don’t know how to describe it but I use it in most of my photos. I don’t know if you can tell it’s the same place because I shoot it from different angles. My subject is always a girl and the theme is something dark and something that people can relate to. Also, even if it’s really dark, I always try to show some hope. What do you think are the most important traits to have to be a successful photographer? Being open to new ideas and concepts. Is there an aspect of photography that you still struggle with? Yes, I have a hard time blending in a subject with a background if they weren’t shot in the same place. Matching the light and various segments of the different photos is something I am still trying to figure out. Which artist or photographer inspires you the most? The photographers that inspire me the most are Brooke Shaden and Lara Jade. Lara got me into conceptual photography when I was younger, but now she is one of the biggest fashion photographers in New York and she is only 23! I do miss her conceptual work though. I love Brooke’s work the most, not just because she is an incredible person but because I respect her work as an artist. She also writes blog posts about inspiration and motivation, so that always helps me. Whenever I feel uninspired, I always watch her videos or read her blog. Do you think you will shoot more light-hearted themes in the future? Maybe, I’m not sure. I focus on what I know I can portray. I try to take sadness and put it into something that people can see and relate to. I think one of the reasons that my themes are so dark is because those are feelings we all deal with every now and then. Maybe some people have it harder, but at some point in our lives we've all felt alone, sad, or betrayed and I want to put that into my work, just to let people know that it is okay. They're not alone. Maybe they can find solace in that. Maybe they'd reach out and talk about it. I hope they do. If you want to see Amani’s work first hand she is exhibiting at the Pro Art Gallery, Jumeirah from June the 14th.

Justin Timberlake: TKO by

Shaun van der Linden

“Just going to throw this out there, it’s seriously hot!”. Reminiscent of European gigs where fans ignore the rain and mud to see their idols, it was hot but no one cared. Timberlake seems to be one of a rare breed of endothermic entertainers whose energy is perpetually refuelled by the frenzied 20,000 strong crowd, as he belts out hit after hit. It’s then that you realize: this is a special musician.

“...as he belts out hit after hit. It’s then that you realize: this is a special musician”

The American pop star kicked off the show with ‘Pusher Lover Girl’, the opener for the 20/20 album - an exquisite R&B influenced orchestral intro quickly followed by his flawless vocals. This was aptly followed up by ‘Rock Your Body’ from the hit album Justified, his first as a solo artist. Past and present hits like ‘Seniorita’, ‘My Love’, ‘Cry Me a River’, ‘Lovestoned’, and ‘Suit & Tie’ were all aired to deafening screams and chant backs galore. At one point Justin says, “I see you” to members of the crowd at the front; a charming touch, and one in stark contrast to the EDM superstars of the moment who feel that playing pre-made mixes with a light show, fist pumping, and shouting “make some noise” is a show. JT was supported by The Tennessee Kids, a twelve strong troupe from his home county which included vocalists, a brass section and a cool jazz guitar sound which had a distinct Janelle Monae feel to it. Add to that a very professional dance company and you get a night of carefully choreographed chaos with a supporting cast who seemed to be genuinely enjoying the show. I half expected a one-way deal where pop royalty puts on a delightful playlist of songs from his newest album for the #attimberlakeconcert selfie-craving masses. Instead, the audience was treated to a much more personal show with JT paying tribute to his past by playing Elvis’s “Heartbreak Hotel” and Micheal Jackson’s “Human Nature”, asking the crowd to “sing so he can hear us” for the latter. The crowd were also a surprise with an even mix of men and women of all ages who were genuine fans signing along to every song. It has been nine years since his first UAE show in 2007 and it was well worth the wait. I am sure I speak for everyone when I say he knocked me right out.

Dubai Rock Fest

writing by photos by

Another year of metal madness has come and gone, with this year’s edition of Dubai Rock Festival. The Dubai Rock Festival made the transition from an indoor festival (hosted at World Trade Center last year) to and outdoor one, hosted at Al Nasr Leisureland. Not even the humid air was enough to deter Dubai’s hard rock fans from showing up and supporting the six bands. Simply put; the festival was a blast. The line-up for the night featured two local bands, Nervecell and Ascendant. The festival also flew in Demonic Resurrection all the way from India to kick the festival off at 9 PM. The festival also featured two French bands, Loudbast and Nightmare, who were in last year’s rock fest. Portuguese metal band Heavenwood were in attendance in anticipation of their new album being released this year. The artists that headlined the festivities gave it their all and put on a show like no other. The passion was apparent in the raspy growls of the lead singers, the heavy, melodic guitar rifts and fast paced drumming. The allure of the live performance and expert light-show drew all the attendees towards the stage like moths to a flame. Dubai Rock Fest’s audience was not too keen on being outshone by the bands and the hundreds of people in the audience clapped, head-banged and mosh-pitted on cue. It was an adrenaline-packed event, but appreciation of the metal music was the highlight of the night. Every song, whether thrash or death metal, was greeted with the same sign: a raised hand, pinky, index finger and thumb pointing out indicating a love and appreciation for their music.

Black Sabbath Rock Abu Dhabi

Lead guitarist Tony Iommi’s riffs were so incredible; he made his guitar sing with an ease that made his hands seem to dance over the fret. Legendary bassist Geezer Butler’s created the vital depth of the hollow, haunting sounds that influenced the birth of heavy metal itself. Drummer Tommy Clufetos had the most insane, impossible drum solo that left everyone slack jawed for a minute or two, and Ozzy Osbourne was... well Ozzy. The exact same Ozzy whose antics were the kind all Black Sabbath fans hoped to see, from the frog leaps, to the maniacal laugh, to his occasional clapping and yelling at the crowd to “Go crazy”. He did his usual ritual of dousing his face and hair in water before eyeing the crowd with his black rimmed eyes.

Despite what the critics hinted at, Black Sabbath's Du Arena concert on May 29th proved to the croud that they've still got it.

Osbourne’s vocals are virtually intact. His reverberating wails filled the stadium and fans were thrown back to the heavy metal glory days, when it was at its prime and purest. You could picture yourself in the back of a smoky, dimly lit club in the 70s when they played their earliest gigs. There was a brief comment on the kiln-like heat then an apology from Osbourne saying “Sorry it took so long”. From the band’s reaction to the crowd, it seemed Black Sabbath had little idea of the enormity of their Middle East fan base, this being their first ever concert in the Middle East. However, they did promise to return and we’re holding onto that. The night was drenched in heavy metal. And it was an honor to see the original three reunited again. They still had the chemistry, grit and guts. The soul of heavy metal hadn't diminished within them even after more than four decades of Black Sabbath, an example that real metal endures and lives on. writing by photos by

When Shaikha Cooks by

Jacob Stenhouse

Chef? Student? Interior Designer? Blogger? Putting just one title on Shaikha Al Ali is no easy task - there isn’t much that the nineteen year old Emirati does not do. At this young age Shaikha has already had her deliciously unique recipes featured in BBC Good Food, The Urban Yogi and took part in this year’s edition of Dubai Food Festival. Shaikha is well on the way to turning a tasty talent into a lasting career and is here to give everyone a taste of the finer points of Emirati dining. She'll make sure they come back for seconds. Shaikha says... You can still enjoy a high quality, home cooked meal on a shoe string budget. When some people think of steak, they assume that they have to pay top dollar to enjoy it at home. In fact, you can get a good cut of beef from a butcher for around AED 25 and season it with ingredients you already have around the house. Season it with garlic, rosemary, butter and a dollop of cream and pan fry it. Add a veg side dish and you have the perfect dinner. I would love to learn how to cook… Saudi Arabian food like my grandmother. A lot of what I know about cooking today is because of her and Saudi food has beautiful composition. Whereas Emirati food blends many flavour together, Saudi Arabian cuisine has a distinct taste to its dishes. For example, just cinnamon and chili are enough to season a Saudi dish. My idea of the perfect kitchen is... a romantic one. I picture it like the ones in San Torini in the Greek Isles; lots of colours and overlooking the sea. It would be old-fashioned, not that stainless steel sleek look. I’d also like to have a wood furnace to cook on as well. Follow Shaikha’s blog at: whenshaikhacooks.com

Dubai Pole Fit

Taught in a stunning studio facing the marina, Pole Fit Dubai is revolutionizing the way people in Dubai view the sport. The pole fit class is an hour long and is broken down into three parts: A 15 minute warm up, which includes stretches for the whole body, 10-minute strength building exercises (tailored to different levels), 30-minute pole training (combination of spins and tricks) and a 5-minute cool down.

These exercises vary in difficulty but even the most challenging give you a perspective and respect for the instructors who are able to hold and contort their bodies into positions . The main muscle groups worked are the core with the abdominals and lats massively engaged as well as arms with the biceps and shoulders used to hold your weight. When asked why one should do pole fit, Michelle Qubrosi, an instructor at Pole Fit Dubai said “It is a fantastic full body workout which improves all aspects of fitness - flexibility, muscular endurance & strength. And the best part is that everyone can do it, men & women of all ages with little or no fitness background. And of course, it is great fun!” So how is pole fit different to the gym? Instructor Vlada Zhizchnko explained that “Most people find the gym boring, repetitive, and

usually see it as a chore in order to achieve the body they deserve. Pole fitness is primarily great fun, and is a highly addictive workout. Almost every class will see the students achieve something they weren’t previously able to and there will already be another move they are aiming for for the next class– as a side effect, participants will lose weight, tone up and gain coordination and flexibility – as well as some awesome skills!” At the end of the class I’d had an awesome workout, but you feel as if you’ve had a great time too, full of laughs and good energy. Also, haplessly flapping about on a pole was definitely out of my comfort zone, which is always great experience. Read on to see how the rest of the class felt after the workout:

Ryan van der Linden I was extremely skeptical at first and almost didn’t show up but I enjoyed it and had loads of fun. It’s something I’d recommend my friends try out.

Liné van Zyl Pole fit was so much fun! At first I thought I couldn’t do anything because it was harder than I thought but I am so glad I did it.

Manon Peyroth The pole fit instructors were great and while it was difficult I really enjoyed the experience. Also, the view from the studio is amazing.

Anita Archer I had such a fun class that was filled with great energy. Challenging but well worth it. I’ll be back.

Nevena Keselj I thoroughly enjoyed the class and it was interesting to learn a new way to work out. I feel fresh and more energetic now. I think that everyone did well.

Ben Catling Coming from sporting background I was pleasantly surprised at the physical challenge pole fitness offered me. The instructors were great at personally assessing the level of fitness and putting my body to the test accordingly. She had me lifting my fully body weight in ways I couldn’t at the gym. My instructor also showed me how a pole can be used for some serious all over flexibility and strength conditioning, not just as a tool for dancing and seemed like a good cross training activity for other sports.

GQ Bar Let's just say this place is amazing! True to its brand image, The GQ bar is a haven for stylish professionals in the modern day metropolis, Dubai. Located at JW Marriott Marquis in Business Bay, GQ Bar offers two floors of fine dining and an extensive range of beverages that will serve a wide range of palettes. We tried out their famous sushi and having tasted a selection of the seafood, I was not left dissapointed. The rumours are true, GQ Bar serves out-of-this-world sushi and a gorgeous main dish of salmon and black cod. Somehow room was made for dessert, a chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream which was heavenly. Food aside, GQ Bar does live up to it's reputation; the music and interiors as well as excellent service are just what you'd expect from a place that carries the GQ name. Our waiter was brilliant as he clearly knew his food and had a great sense of humour. In fact, we were grateful to him for suggesting a few dishes for our dear friend, who because of the variety on offer spent over 20 minutes trying to decide what he'd eat. Overall, GQ bar is an excellent establishment for any day of the week; it is perfect for business dinners or for hanging out with friends in the lounge. The sushi Sundays are not to be missed either. QBara We've ventured into QBara while attending a preview of Michael Jackson's new album and we couldn't help but be simply fascinated with the place. The interior is heavily inspired by African motives and can be described as one of a kind. The interior features a massive wall that looks as if it's built out of many wooden Arabic doors. That is the centrepiece of the whole venue; it's used as a screen for amazing projections that tell stories, show elegant silhouettes dancing to the music and create illusions that make one feel the walls is, in fact, a stack of doors that keep on opening and closing inviting you to peek in. Needless to say, we were so fascinated with the ambience we absolutely had to stay for dinner. We had seafood and a vegetarian dinner. Let's just say, the quality of the food matched the venue. Our char-grilled salmon was heavenly, nearly tempting our vegetarian friend to ask for a taste. To sum it up, QBara is definitely a place to go to with a friend. It's ambiance is equal to none as you will find yourself simply staring into the visuals, that can leave you mesmerised. We are definitely going back for more.

Ramadan by

JACOB STENHOUSE

During mid-July, Muslims across the world will observe their monthly fast during the holiest month in Islam: Ramadan. Commemorating the revelation of the Holy Qur’an nearly fifteen hundred years ago, the daily fast lasts from sunrise to sunset for thirty consecutive days. As many UAE residents will know, Ramadan dramatically shifts daytime life for everyone. Eating and drinking in public, and playing loud music during the day are discouraged, but Ramadan is more about what people should do rather than shouldn’t: doing kind deeds for others, like giving to the less fortunate, is greatly encouraged. The lesson behind the month is to treat others with care and respect, teach gratefulness for worldly possessions and, most importantly, foster a connection with Allah. For all, it is a time of introspection, of faith in others and the good nature that is in all of us.

How Ramadan Has Changed During Ramadan, the quiet, introspective nature of the afternoon gives way to festivities in the evening. Carnivals, fairs and Ramadan tents all pop up around the UAE as soon as the sun goes down. But how have the celebrations changed over the years? As the population of the UAE has grown, along with its economy, so have the celebrations and traditions. Today, most Muslims in the UAE have the luxury of breaking their fast with a wide selection of food. The Ramadan of the 70’s and 80’s only involved of dates, laban and water. Communal celebrations were common; many neighbours would cook a whole sheep together and share it. Since, Ramadan has grown into an exciting time with many activities for Muslims and non-Muslims to enjoy. Although the communal eating of past decades is uncommon, having Iftaar is still a social event; many families, neighbours and friends join together to eat and spend time with one another. Eating out in one of the beautiful Ramadan tents or restaurants has become common and a quick trip to a supermarket is all that is needed to arrange a delicious meal in your own home for friends and family. Many young people enjoy celebrating together as groups of friends, dressing in traditional clothing and going out to eat and then enjoying the other late-night activities on offer around the city at malls or restaurants. Although the experience has changes, the essence of Ramadan is still the same: bonding with your soul, family and friends, and forming a connection with God.

How to Get Involved With Ramadan 1. If you are lucky enough to get invited to an Iftaar dinner then it’s a great way to experience local culture, bond and try many different cultural dishes. It is polite to bring some type of Arabic treat for you and your friends to enjoy after the main course. 2. Have your own Iftaar gathering. Buy some dates and water. It is etiquette that Muslims should break their fast with these two, or a light soup. After breaking their fast around 7:00 PM when the sun sets, offer a place in your house to pray the Maghrib prayer. For Iftaar meal ideas check out this handy facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ramadan-recipes/112629995501296 3. Providing for the less fortunate during Ramadan can be done with great ease. Whether donating time, money or goods, the lasting impact is infinite. There are many volunteer platforms to choose from that offer Ramadan-themed works; such as preparing and handing out food for laborers before Iftaar. Check out www.volunteerinuae.com and www.dubaicares.ae/en/volunteer to lend a helping hand this Ramadan and beyond. 4. The UAE is a country with a rich cultural history and Ramadan is the perfect time to get in touch with it. Head over to the Dubai Museum - built in 1787 it is the oldest existing building in Dubai and houses artifacts that locals used centuries ago and fascinating photographical timelines. Or visit the Grand Mosque located in Bur Dubai, or head to Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The minarets and incredible architecture are the perfect place to soak in the beauty that Ramadan has to offer. 5. Greet those fasting with Ramadan Kareem. Meaning ‘Blessed Ramadan’, it shows acknowledgment of their fast and will be greatly appreciated. 6. Try Iftaar at one of the numerous locations around the city. The Melrose Ballroom of the Movenpick, JBR, will be transformed into a fully air-conditioned Ramadan tent, beautifully draped with date palms and a casual majlis seating. Ramadan at the Radisson Blu, Dubai Media City, offers an Iftaar buffet of classic Arabian dishes with live cooking stations and daily flavoured Ouzi. Or, head over to Zaytoun at the Crowne Plaza at Festival City which has a selection of freshly prepared dishes from around the Arab world. 7. If you love to shop, try an alternative shopping destination from the malls and head to the Ramadan Night Market. Hosted from July 17th – 27th at Dubai World Trade Center, this event will offer a wide range of products from across the Gulf in a market style. And for the night owls, it runs from 8pm to 2am.

Online Reputation Management by

Shaun van der Linden

The boundaries between our online and “offline” lives are evolving at an alarming rate. Your reputation in the virtual world is fast becoming as important as your reputation in the real world, and there is an increasing need to be conscious of what this means, and how important and delicate a matter it is. We’ve all heard the stories of people who, thanks to not taking care with privacy settings, have inadvertently had hundreds turn up to what was meant to be a small gathering. But as social media usage increases, so do the ways that it can be damaging to both your personal and professional life. 90% of recruiters check applicants out online, with 50% screening out applicants based on information posted online. Understanding the privacy controls of social media has never been more important in order to avoid search engines permanently catching anything, which could potentially damage your online reputation and reflect on you negatively.

Privacy Keeping your online content private and protected is fast becoming high up on the list of things to do. Social media has now made its way firmly into the workplace. It has become a tool for employers to weed out applicants and form judgments, which can mean the difference between getting that dream job, and having your CV tossed onto the rejection pile. Protecting your tweets, selecting the correct privacy controls on Facebook and making bogs private should be a first priority when using social media. This way, if you post something inadvertently damaging to your online reputation, there will be limited access to it and search engines cannot cache them permanently. Paris Brown is probably wishing for a censorship button now. At 17, Brown was the first Youth Police and Crime Commissioner to be appointed in the United Kingdom, a job that paid her handsomely. Within a matter of days, tweets she had posted up to three or four years earlier were brought to the attention of the media. The controversial and offensive tweets resulted in her being removed from the post immediately. Brown was deeply embarrassed by her actions and released a public apology but was unable to keep the position. She pointed out that she was not the only teenager to have posted regrettable information to social media, and on that point she is right. However, unlike making a passing comment in conversation, what is put out online remains permanent and can be easily found without the correct privacy settings. Paris Brown’s story is a shining example of why managing your online reputation is of such paramount importance.

What You Can Do In short a good online reputation involves creating a clean and positive first page on search engines when anyone searches your name. There are ways you can manage your online presence: creating social media profiles, your own websites, blogging and submitting videos to youtube.com. The next step is to then engage in a link building strategy to assure that these sites are on the first page of searches in order to move the negative feedback further back on results pages. This has to be perpetually maintained, as you need to be employable even when you already have a job. In essence you are in charge of your own PR. Privacy settings are a hot topic at the moment with big data analysis as the next frontier. Social media giants Twitter have admitted that they have imported their user’s phone contacts to learn more about their users. This week Facebook bowed to public pressure and tightened their default privacy settings for new users who will now only post to friends and family as opposed to the open web and Google have introduced a “forget me” form whereby users can apply with photo id to remove url’s which will then be removed from Google search results in Europe.

At Work Individuals aren’t the only ones who need to manage their reputation. Data from a recent survey of 300 consumers from the Society of New Communications Research stated that “74% [of consumers] choose companies/brands based on others’ customer care experiences shared online.” Slanderous content might end up at the top of the search engine results and ruin its subject. The way search engines work is to sort by relevancy, not by quality, which means slurs and misrepresentations can be read as fact just as easily as honest feedback or complaints. Companies need to actively monitor the web for negative and positive feedback as one bad comment can grow into a discussion and even worse a campaign, which can quickly become a thorn in the side of companies, big or small, as it is difficult to hide. By monitoring the web, a company would be better able to resolve any issues or complaints early, for example by offering a refund or some form of remuneration. You should also always be mindful of posting negative comments about your place of employment or superiors anywhere online. If it falls into the wrong hands it could spell the end of your time as an employee. It is safest to keep any coworkers who have befriended you on Facebook on a limited profile. Ideally the best way to maintain privacy is to use your common sense and good judgment. For some having their lives plastered over the internet is not an issue however if that is not you’re cup of tea, err on the side of caution. There is an ocean of information available on how to best manage online reputations. Check out http://www.beatthecyberbully.ae/young-people for more tips and guidance.

Astrology by linÉ Van Zyl

Gemini 20 May- 21 June Geminis are adaptable. You can easily deal with different types of situations and people. You are versatile, witty, intelligent – always curious and striving to learn more; you love to be in the know – and you have no problem multitasking. Geminis can, at times, be superficial and make snap assumptions about people. Sometimes you forget to take a deeper look at the true value of people or things. However, once you get to know people, and vice versa, you are a fun and generous friend. You are energetic and shy away from routine. A complete social butterfly!

Cancer 21 June- 22 July You are an open and caring person, but when it comes to serious matters you become cautious and careful. You also have an imaginative mind. You won’t hesitate to stand up against anyone who chooses to harm your friends and family – you are a loyal relative, friend and worker. You can be prone to moodiness: warm and engaging one moment and then standoffish and defensive the next. This is because you can easily be made to feel insecure. However, because of this you are also sensitive to the feelings of others and dependable – traits that makes you so popular among your friends.

Leo 22 July- 22 August Leos are generous and never hesitant to give more than others when it comes to family, friends, or other matters. You have a strong sense for loyalty, and an incredibly warm personality. Just like the king of the jungle, you are a leader of the pack as your confidence and ambition helps you accomplish many of your ideals and goals, although you sometimes get ahead of yourself and become a little dominating. You are a true force of nature and can sometimes lose sight of others, but when times are tough you tend to be the one lifting everyone’s spirits with your encouragement and support.

During summer it will be important for all people born under the sign of Aries to keep balance. Take care with your health and don’t get caught up in summer excess. Go out, try new things, meet new people and work hard on your goals and, most importantly, dedicate energy to spending time with friends and family.

You should definitely treat yourself to a really good holiday, this summer. De-stress by finding somewhere which can help you take care of your health; a spa retreat focusing on health, mind and wellbeing could be the perfect getaway. Spoil yourself with good quality luxury treatments, leave the electronics at home and indulge in some personal time.

This summer, channel all your energy into new experiences. As you visit new places you will meet new kindred spirits and grow as an individual. These new places may leave a profound impression on you as you will be experiencing restlessness and feeling the need to explore alternative destinies. There is even a possibility that you will go back home and make a permanent move to a new horizon.

You may encounter a demanding personality this summer who will try to change your lifestyle; don’t let this compromise who you are and make it clear that you are your own person and that you enjoy it. You will see no reason to change so listen to your inner self and follow your true feelings. Surrounding yourself with those closest to you will help you maintain your strength.

Catch your breath this summer and learn to enjoy some “down time”. You have been feeling for some time now that your life is running away from you and that you are not in control. Invest in a nice notebook and start writing some thoughts and ideas down. Spend some time in quiet reflection and some time socialising. Balance of work and play is key in the coming months.

Health is really important throughout the year but during the summer it is at the forefront. In particular, eat well and rest. You may be busy at work and a new colleague could be causing some distractions so try not to let this affect your productivity. You will feel a bit blue in the coming months for no particular reason – it will pass. Dedicate time to reading and you will wake up one morning feeling much better.

This will be a summer with a difference. You have spent your spring de-cluttering and saving some extra cash in your pocket and you’re in the mood for learning and new experiences. Spend your money on expanding your mind: visit galleries, museums, or take some evening classes in a new activity that interests you. Share your new-found knowledge with others – it will make you feel content and connected.

There won’t be a lot of play for you, this summer! You have been busy working and this will continue. Instead of taking a long vacation, go for shorter city breaks. This will also help financially as you plan for the future and keep your eyes on long-term goals. Towards the end of the summer you will meet someone with a sunny personality and they will cheer you up. Smiling more to yourself and others will help you feel more positive overall.

You are just buzzing with energy at the moment and you will need all that energy during summer. You will be first in line for new experiences and you will be almost impatient to try new things. Try not to let that impatience run away with you so that you are also able to focus on new projects at home and work which could begin to pile up. The next few months will be full of achievements if you stay focused and are open to the new.

Your summer will be easy and carefree. You will feel relaxed and ready to spend more time outside and enjoy the sunshine. You will start seeing things from a new perspective after meeting new friends. Don’t be surprised if they are younger than you – this is a good thing. You may have been feeling stuck in the same circle of friends for many years, and now is the time to actively seek out new personalities and gain a new outlook.

This summer will be busy for you. You will take part in lots of outdoor activities including sports and fun time spend in green areas. You have been interested in helping charitable causes for some time and this summer is the perfect time for you to get involved as you will be feeling positive and relaxed. Take the big step and start actively supporting the causes that you believe in – spend your summer focusing on others rather than yourself and, in turn, your own peace of mind will follow.

At the moment you feel sunny and full of joy. The sun will follow you this summer and you will be able to hang on to those feelings of joy and happiness. You might be feeling adventurous and take part in some daring activities. A new hobby which you discover during the summer might become a project. Ignore any jealousy from others and keep a positive mind; surround yourself with positive people and don’t be afraid to swim alone if needed.

Think Science Ambassadors Raise UAE Flag at International Forums A team of two seniors from Al Ittihad Private School came second at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, USA last week. The duo won with their science project, “Grains of Gold,’ in the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. Shamma Al Bastaki and Hayat Abu Alhassan were among 16 young Emirati scientists to take part in the fair following selection by renowned industry and academic experts during the Emirates Foundation Think Science competition, held last month. Finalists were judged on their creativity, scientific thought, skill, and ability to clearly showcase their vision in their projects. ‘Grains of Gold’ won second place in the category of Environmental Management for its practical applicability in real life situations. Finding inspiration from a visit to the Middle East’s first soil museum, the project demonstrated how to use Hydrophobic Sand to minimize water waste in soils. The young scientists were commended for their project’s alignment with the UAE’s vision to become green, and it is hoped that such technology will be used in practice in the UAE. “As role models they are now empowered to encourage other young Emirati youth to further explore and develop their knowledge, analytical thinking and skills as they work together to solve local and global technological challenges facing the nation today,” said Maytha Al Habsi Chief Programmes Officer at the Emirates Foundation won hearing the victory.
