Now you can read our news from anywhere in the world, submit your work on-line and apply to be a model for our fashion shoots all through the website. We are sooooooo excited we feel like flying and singing at the same time, just like the Wave Trip game (p.15). Best thing is we have our amazing interns to sing with at the office (p.4-5) in preparation for the amazing Jazz Festival (p.7). We’ve gone crazy preparing for 2013 and for those of you who haven’t noticed, the magazine is much thicker this month with many more photos of concerts (p.2031) and much more fashion (p.34-43). Crazy is subjective though (p.50) . So would you call us crazy if we went out and bought all the chocolates you can think of, tasted them, and gave them personalities (p.58-59)? Well! This is for the crazy ones. Enjoy!

RK Dear one8one, While reading your magazine, I came across a spread on the interns over the summer, and it got me really interested! I would really like to intern for your magazine, and learn new and different things. I’m very interested in photography, writing, art, books and movies - basically, everything your magazine talks about! BK Hello, one eight one! In October’s issue, I read the interviewed article about Niko Spiteri and it was extremely interesting!
ZA Hi. I am 16 years old. May I please work with you in the magazine this summer? I have written in three magazines so far... BK I am interested in modeling with you. I am 14 years old.. I am attaching 2 profile photos for your reference. FA Hi, I’m a 15 years old girl from Jordan. I’ve been a fan of you magazine from a long time, it’s absolutely outstanding. I love the modeling section and I’ve always had a passion for modeling and your magazine takes a lot of beautiful shoots and I really want to be a part of it.
After reading the article, I thought about the instrument I play. I’m not going to become a ‘professional’ musician, but I’m I’ve always wanted to take modeling planning to do something that is related to seriously and I wanted to be a part of a music and performance art in the future. magazine shoot and I think your magazine is perfect. I would love to get a shot and try it out. It would be a dream come true.
RC Hi one8one, Your magazine gets delivered to my school so I always read it. I saw the part about if we wanted to do modelling and I thought’d it would be really fun to try maybe. I haven’t got any modelling experience but I have had a family photo shoot before and it was great. I think I’d be good as a model because I like taking photos. I really would like to be a model. I wear glasses but I can see okay without them. I would really love to have the experience of being a model. If there’s anything else you need to know I’d be happy to tell you!

Winter Interns
NATASHA AGUIAR During my internship at one8one I have gained experience as a Web Developer, it was a challenge setting up the one8one website, but a fun experience. I got a different perspective as an intern at one8one compared to other places, as it is an enjoyable working environment, making you want to excel at the task given to you, as well as providing the challenge to grow and expand in my skill set. After a month as an intern, I was excited to be offered the position as a full-time Web Developer.
SWATI KALANI Aloha! Life has its own way to guide you in the right direction, and that way is called Destiny. Yeah, I kid you not. This internship was completely accidental but such a blessing (read: blast). As though it’s customized for rat race abhors like me. Design is a way of life for me. Involving myself in a spectrum of design fields, ranging from tiny logo designing to large space interior planning gives me the ultimate high. Working for one8one gave me the marvellous opportunity to get my hands dirty with the passion for design and more. What I have earned here is priceless. Freedom. Support. Knowledge. Acknowledgement. Respect. Passion. Me, Swati humbly raise a toast and screams “Cheers to passion for life & art, one8one!”
DANIA CHATILA Never in a million years would I have imagined myself interning, (let alone being published), in a magazine of any sort. one8one has given me the opportunity to express myself in so many aspects of my life. Interning at one8one has been everything except ordinary! I’ve done more in a period of 2 months than I have ever done in my entire life! Whether I was meeting major celebrities (like Jason Derulo!), going to unbelievable concerts, interviewing the youth or typing away at my computer, one8one gave me the opportunity to A) have the time of my life B) express myself and C) experience new things. Thanks to Maria and Anton I have been transformed into a whole new person. This magazine has opened my eyes to the importance of imagination, originality and creativity. During my month at the magazine I was finally being heard and taken into account- which is a rare thing for the youth within the Middle East. I truly cannot emphasize how much the atmosphere at one8one does to you. For once in my life I feel like I’ve accomplished something worthwhile. My co-workers at one8one have become a family to me, and I cannot imagine where I would be without them.

S’cool Stuff DUBAI DJANE TOPS VIRGIN MEGASTORE CHARTS DJ Ilona Maras tops the Virgin Megastore charts in the UAE this week as her two-disc compilation mix for the latest edition of Pacha Dubai VIP becomes the number one bestselling CD in the House music genre category. Pacha Ibiza Dubai is continuously creating compilations from the world’s top house DJs. Talented Dubai-based DJ Ilona Maras joins forces with SYX Ibiza Collective DJs to mix and compile this year’s top House tracks including La Tarde Se Ha Puesto Triste by Dr. Kucho, Messing With My Mind (Blue RoomVersion) by Matan Caspi, Tribute to PACHA NYC by Luciano Pardini, This is Not a Love Song (DJ Eako Remix) by Azzido Da Bass and other Ibiza hits. “The fact that my compilation mix has become the number one House album on the Virgin Megastore music charts shows that fans in Dubai are starting to support locally based talent more and more, as opposed to only buying Western commercial music. I hope more locally based artists will be encouraged to follow their dreams and create music in Dubai for the people of Dubai across all genres of music,” said Ilona.
STUDENTS ADDRESS GLOBAL ISSUES AT NYUAD Students from around the world and across the UAE came together in Abu Dhabi to propose sustainable action plans to address important global issues as part of the Global Issues Network (GIN) 2013 hosted by NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD). Fifty university and high school students representing more than 20 nationalities were divided into “global village” teams to create Abu Dhabi-focused solutions to five major global issues: energy, health, education, technology, and waste management. During the three-day conference — which drew attendees from the US, UK, Hong Kong, India, Syria, and Bahrain — delegates spent time learning about Abu Dhabi and engaging with sustainability leaders across a range of industries. The program included visits to the marine laboratory and fish market, meeting with experts from the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi to discuss water management, and a walking tour of Abu Dhabi to discuss sustainable cities in the context of the Capital. Keynote speakers addressed the delegates and worked closely with them in the process of formulating their solutions. Speakers included HH Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Ali Al Nuaimi, also known as the “Green Sheikh”; Jeffrey Avina, director of the Middle East and Africa Division of Microsoft Citizenship and Community Affairs Department; Natasha Chichilnisky-Heal, strategic advisor for Global Thermostat; and Scott Hammell, inspirational speaker, charity worker and World Guinness Record holder.
SHERWOOD WINS RED BULL X-FIGHTERS WORLD TOUR Levi Sherwood of New Zealand won the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour with a thrilling victory in the final round of the 2012 season in Australia over his hard-charging rival Thomas Pages of France. He was the dominant force during the entire seven-month 2012 season with three wins, getting clear victories in the season opener in Dubai and then in the midsummer classic in Madrid. But he was beaten decisively in Glen Helen, California by American Todd Potter, who held the championship lead through the middle of the season. Sherwood then opened a big lead after his win in Madrid but was beaten in Munich by Pages. Sherwood was finally able to shake off his pesky French rival Pages, getting the clutch triumph he needed in the dramatic showdown battle to win the closest finish in the 12-year history of Red Bull X-Fighters. “There were a lot of ups and downs during the whole season,” said Sherwood after being pushed to his limits by Pages. It was the battle the world had been waiting for and the New Zealander prevailed with another flawless run under pressure to win his first Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour Title. The best FMX Athletes in the world brought an explosion of tricks like never seen before in a Freestyle-Motocross-Event.
STRONG DUBAI DEBUT FOR GT ACADEMY GRADUATES The Nissan PlayStation® GT Academy again demonstrated the strength and depth of its driver discovery and development programme this weekend when the four newest graduates took their prize drive at the Dubai 24 Hours. Two of the latest PlayStation®3 gaming experts turned real Nissan racing drivers took the chequered flag in an exceptional second place in class, whilst the second Nissan 370Z Nismo GT4 car crossed the line in ninth position after some dramas in the night. The No.127 Nissan 370Z Nismo, raced by Wolfgang Reip and Mark Shulzhitskiy, with their pro team-mates Lucas Ordonez and Roman Rusinov, finished the race in second position. Lucas gave them the best possible start by qualifying the car on pole position in the SP3 class and then getting the race underway before handing over to Roman. Next it was the turn of Wolfie, who beat 830,000 Gran Turismo®5 gamers to the 2012 GT Academy Europe title, to take the wheel for his first stint in an international race and true to form with endurance racing the Belgian had a baptism of fire! Unfortunately on my in lap another car lost a wheel and the first I knew about it was when I hit it at full speed. I realised exactly what had happened and hoped the damage to the front of the Nissan wasn’t too bad. I then got to witness the RJN boys at work and they repaired my car in less than an hour.” This incident put the No.127 car right back to ninth place in class and meant that for Mark’s first stint he was under pressure to make sure all was well with the car by venturing out at a slower pace and building up to full racing speed. Like Wolfie he did a great job and started the fight back that would continue through the night. By first light they were up to third place and after steadily chipping away at the leaders throughout Saturday morning it was Russian driver Mark who crossed the line in a well-deserved second place.
DEAN EDWARDS AT ‘MONDAY NIGHT FUNNIES’ Dean Edwards graced Dubai with his stand-up comedy show, brought by Dubomedy! For those of you who (very unfortunately) have no idea who Dean Edwards is, he is a New Yorker who has set his mark in the world of comedy following his appearances on Saturday Night Live, MTV’S Guy Code, on Showtime and many more! I had the privilege to attend the show of this lively and humorous comedian, which was an exceptional experience as Dean Edwards kept the audience laughing for the entire duration of the show with his amusing and witty outlook on comedy. I had only heard of this talented comedian one week prior to the show, therefore I had no idea of what was in store for the evening- and man, was I ecstatic at the end of the show! The show was hosted by Emirates Woman of the year nominee; Mina Liccione, and the hilarious Ellen Gayle-Harewood opened the show with a bang. The atmosphere became even more gleeful as Dean took the stage. He gave a high energy performance, had the audience almost rolling on the floor in laughter, and showed off his incredible celebrity impressions such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Lil Wayne, Eddie Murphy, Jay-Z and Denzel Washington. Overall, the evening was entertaining and absolutely amusing! by

Halo 4 Did you miss Master Chief? We know we did! While the previous game was seen as an end to a trilogy, this game marks the beginning of a new one. Set 4 years after the events of Halo 3, Master Chief has been in hibernation and has crash landed into a previously uncharted planet; Requiem. To make matters interesting, the Covenant is back and they’re out for blood. As far as FPS games go, Halo 4 is a delight. Gloriously well written, breathtakingly animated, and ever so lovingly complemented with a music score courtesy of Neil Davidge. The game is hands down one of the top 10 games of 2012. by

Crysis 3 Crytek brings its’ sandbox first person shooter for another show, this time spec’ed with the latest version of the jaw-dropping CryEngine 3. The story follows Prophet who is seriously pissed off and wants to exact revenge of his dead squad. Having a ridiculously powerful Nanosuit should come in handy. The game will be out on Xbox 360 and PS3, because your PC won’t be able to play it anyways.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance ! Precaution: This is not the Metal Gear you are quite expecting. Co-developed by Kojima Productions and Platinum Games, Revengeance is a departure from the stealth/espionage genre the series is known for, but instead is a high-speed, hack-and-slash spinoff that follows Raiden, who must untangle his past to save a world plummeting into an asymmetric warfare.
Devil May Cry The new DmC details protagonist Dante’s early life, and is considered a reboot of the franchise in all aspects. The game follows Dante and his brother Vergil as they come to terms with their half angel, half demon form, and fight off a new evil. Helmed by Ninja Theory, DmC brings back the franchise’s trademark stylish action, fluid combat, and a cocky lead character.
Dead Space 3 The fear is back. At least, this time around you have a companion. The space adventures of Isaac Clarke and his gang of necromorphs (who make no mistake, totally dislikes him and want to dismember him all the time) returns for a third outing, this time on the harsh and snowy planet of Tau Volantis. Clarke must now partner up with soldier John Carver to uncover the source of the necromorph outbreak.
Aliens: Colonial Marines Borderlands developer Gearbox is exploring the popular Alien franchise with a brand new first person shooter that hopes to fill in the gaps between Aliens 2 and Aliens 3 (hence, hopefully making sense of Aliens 3). Along with a lengthy single-player campaign, the game also features a 4-player co-op mode so that you may not venture into the terrifying Xeno infested station alone.

WAVE TRIP From the creators of ‘Bad Hotel’ Lucky Frame Limited, this app is something to behold. It’s a 2D arcade where all one has to do is tap on the right and left sides of the screen, while avoiding obstacles and collecting weird geometric shapes the app calls “coins” to save friends. Lost? So were we. What makes this app different from any other? It’s all about music. You see, every “coin”is a sound, the more “coins”collected, the richer the song becomes. It is all about creating music and enjoying the beautiful UI while trying to play a relatively-simple game. Another cool thing, it is impossible to die in the game. Instead, there is a minimum of points to collect in order to progress onto the next level. All in all, this app is for those who love music, creativity, great graphic design and some basic gameplay. iOS only, AED 7.29
THE BORGIAS
LOVE ME IF YOU DARE
Cast: Jeremy Irons, François Arnaud and Holliday Grainger
Cast: Guillaume Canet, Marion Cotillard and Thibault Verhaeghe
The Borgias are back and with much more drama this season. Pope Alexander VI is still alive and well, however his life is constantly in danger as his opposition is restless until he’s deposed or murdered. This season is fueled by tragedy, love, crime and envy. The fans of Game of Thrones will particularly appreciate the plot and scheming ‘The Borgias has to offer. After all, it is ‘Game of Thrones’ on steroids.
Julien and Sophie are crazy about the daring game they had started as kids. They are adults now and it seems that with each new dare their lives are becoming more difficult to live. One of the difficulties is their crazy love for one another and how disfunctional their lifelong relationship is. They act out on their whims and desires, yet in the end, love is the only thing that prevails.

Album Reviews LANA DEL REY ‘BORN TO DIE: THE PARADISE EDITION’ She calls herself a gangsta Nancy Sinatra, we call her musical wonder. When you first hear Lana sing, you can’t help but wonder if you’ve time travelled back to the 60s Pop/Rock’n’Roll era. Her dreamy voice takes one to the time that’s been long forgotten. ‘Born to Die: The Paradise Edition’ is a re-release of the ‘Born to Die’ album which earned Lana a Brit Award in 2012 for “International Breakthrough Act”. We’d call ‘The Paradise Edition’ a more dreamy and darker sibling of the original. The additional eight tracks to the already-released fifteen adventure into a more expressive and daring lyrics as well as musical arrangements. To get an idea of its feel we recommend you watch her latest music video ‘Ride’. It sums it up pretty correctly. Out since November 12th, ‘Born to Die: The Paradise Edition’ is a definite buy for a those who can appreciate the extra-ordinary.
CHRISTINA AGUILERA ‘LOTUS’ It’s been a long time coming, some would even say they’d been waiting since 2006 and now here it is, Christina’s latest solo album ‘Lotus’. If you liked ‘Your Body’ prepare for a heavy dose of Max Martin’s genius of pop. The songs feel and sound powerful, embracing freedom, power and strength, hence the name- ‘Lotus’. The highlighters are: “Let There Be Love”, “Blank Page”, “Around the World” and “Army of Me”. As with every other record of hers, this album shows Christina in a different, more commercially driven, pop diva-kind of way. We would go as far as to say that this is the closest we can get to her 2002 ‘Stripped’ record. One major note to be considered, the deluxe version is the only version you should buy, as it features four more brilliant tracks without which ‘Lotus’ feels incomplete. And finally, even if you are not Christina’s fan you should still listen to this record because people involved. After all, who doesn’t like some Max Martin genius, CeeLo Green’s funk and Blake Shelton’s country drive. by

TAYLOR SWIFT ‘RED’ ‘Red’, Taylor’s first LP since 2010’s ‘Speak Now’, is ranked as one of the best country/pop albums of the month. The album is full of the different emotions that Swift has felt over the years. Almost every song is about the kind of tumultuous, crazy, insane, intense, semitoxic relationships that she’s experienced within the last two years. With sixteen tracks and several co-writes – including a duet with Englishman Ed Sheeran, it is no surprise that this fun album is at the top of the charts. by

Concerts
Photos: Josh Saldanha The Gulf Bike Week festival at the Al Badia Golf Course, hosted by Live Nation Middle East brought in a swarm of fans, whether they were there to support their friends or to see the big acts. On the 18th of October, Megadeth hit the stage supported by local acts Absolace and Sandwash. Absolace played an hour-long set of their proggy tunes and were very tight, as well as confident. Their set was quite impressive; having not seen them hit a big stage before. In addition, Sandwash have been around for quite a while and during this show interacted greatly with the crowd. I really liked their energy on stage. Although their set wasn’t as long, they threw in both old and new songs during their act (it was also lovely seeing many people come out to support their local acts). Megadeth returned to Dubai after six years and still managed to stir up the crowd; ‘metal horns’ were seen all across the venue from fans of different ages. Initially, Dave Mustaine walking on stage thrilled the fans, but guitarist Chris Broderick mostly dominated the stage with his enthusiasm and seemed to be the most energetic during the show. Megadeth’s set included classics such as ‘Hangar 18’ and ‘Symphony of Destruction’, yet many fans were disappointed that ‘Holy Wars’ wasn’t performed and as for my personal experience, I have to say I was a little disappointed with the turn out, expecting a much bigger crowd for a famous band like Megadeth (although the ones that did come out made most of their experience!). The next night, Daughtry performed with supporting acts local Juliana Down and English Razorlight. Juliana Down, performing again after some time, released two new tracks at the concert and Razorlight performed better than expected. They hyped up the fans with their up-beat riffs and their energy on stage was zealous!
Gulf Bike Week by
dIANA K.
Chris Daughtry appealed to the crowd enormously and encouraged them to sing aloud. The band performed their classics “It’s Not Over” and “There and Back Again”, which I remember were both quite big hits over Dubai’s radio stations. Chris Daughtry put on a terrific show and even interacted with the crowd, although I thought his voice was a little too loud over the other band members’ instruments at some points. The display at the Gulf Bike Week looked pretty interesting! The shows were very well organized in terms of the big venue, food & drinks, providing shuttle buses and both light (a little too blinding at certain points) and sound.
to find Maria (the Editor in Chief of the magazine) waiting in her office to tell me the great news. The words that later came out of her mouth will constantly ring through my mind for years to come... “Dania, get ready, I’m taking you to meet Jason Derulo!” I didn’t know how to react. I, Dania Chatila, was going to meet the one and only JASON DERULO! The journey felt like it had taken hours, when I had only been in the car for up to 15 minutes. Once Maria and I had arrived at the Burj Park, I was privileged enough to watch Derulo’s sound check. The reality of myself being at a sound check made me feel like I was in some sort of dream or movie. Crazy things like this never happen to ordinary people like me. Nonetheless, once he had finished rehearsing, I lined up outside his trailer in preparation to actually meet him. The door kept opening and closing as I watched crazy fan girls come out screaming with ecstasy. Minutes later the door opened once again, however this time I was the crazy fan girl about to meet him...
“ I, Dania Chatila, was going to meet the one and only JASON DERULO! ”
Walking into his trailer, I couldn’t bring myself to look up and meet eyes with one of the world’s biggest music sensations. The first thing I did was awkwardly ask for a hug and luckily enough he accepted! I told him how amazing his vocals were and he replied with a ‘thank you’. Once we had finished our quick conversation, I took a few snapshots with him and got his autograph. Walking out of his trailer I felt like the luckiest girl in the entire world. Not many people get to experience what I had experienced, and thanks to one8one, one of my biggest dreams has finally come true. by
Meeting Jason Derulo I never thought the day would come when I would ever get the opportunity to meet a celebrity of some sort. Especially one like Jason Derulo... Thanks to one8one magazine, I was given the chance to go to the Caribbean Carnival where Jason Derulo, Sean Kingston and Bow Wow were set to perform, although I was more than ecstatic and jumped at the opportunity, the one thing I wished I had the opportunity to do was physically meet at least one of them, and I’m sure any other Derulo fan would have felt the same way. Keeping that in mind, I came into work, at one8one magazine, on a typical Thursday morning

Yasalam Abu Dhabi Yasalam, oh how we long for it! Year after year Flash Entertainment brings a bunch of top names in the music industry to the capital’s beautiful Corniche and Yas Island as a part of the entertainment program to go alongside the F1 tournament happening in the country at the end of the year. In 2012 crowds of thousands flocked to the streets of Abu Dhabi and Yas Island to watch Nickleback, Akon, Eminem, Melanie C, Missy Elliott and Kylie Minogue perform their best hits. Since Yasalam is mainly divided into two venues: one is the Beats on the Beach, and other - du Arena on Yas Island. Melanie C kick-started the beach gig with a massive crowd, pushing, dancing and having the time of their lives while trying to sing along to songs they didn’t know the lyrics to. One doesn’t have to mention the amazing vocal abilities the former Sporty Spice has. She played for a little over an hour leaving the crowd perfectly warmed up for the guest of the night-Akon.

Let us tell you one thing, Akon knows exactly how to work the crowd! The crowd went totally bonkers the moment he ran out on stage wearing all-white outfit. As he was going through his hits, which included his recent collaborations with David Guetta as well as earlier works like ‘Locked Up’ and ‘Lonely’, the crowd grew impatiently insane, with people dancing just about anywhere at the beach, be it a bench or the top of the fence. One thing I personally found absolutely astonishing was when he got inside the air balloon and jumped into the crowd. It took Akon about 20-25 minutes to get back to the stage, as the crowd kept on rolling him away from the stage. Crazy! Come the next day, me and my friends were ready for the opening night at du Arena, headlined by Kylie Minogue. Personally, I have seen the petite pop princess in a show before, however I didn’t know what to expect, since there was no major tour she’d done in over a year.

First, the set up was not as grand as on her last Les Folies tour, or even the X tour. The crowd was mainly of her true fans, with some even having travelled all the way from Australia just to see her perform. As the show started, Kylie came down the stairs wearing a blue full-body suit. She sang all of her greatest hits, literally performing her biggest singles from every album of her 25- year long career, including ‘I Should Be So Lucky’, “Can’t Get You Out of My Head’, ‘Spinning Around’, ‘All the Lovers’ just to name a few. I was a bit disappointed she didn’t perform her latest ‘Timebomb’ as well as totally surprised how she chose not to do the show inspired by her latest release ‘Abbey Road Sessions’. Overall, the show was great, her voice was brilliant and she was as sweet as ever. Her sister, Dannii Minogue, was in the crowd too and even walked around the arena, talking to some of the concertgoers. What a fun, sweet and great night! The other two shows we were lucky to see was Nickleback on Saturday and, of course, Eminem on Sunday. While Nickleback brought the rock house down to the arena and totally burnt through the night with the crowd engulfed in their musical flames and sense of euphoria, Eminem showed us all why we love him in the first place. The guy is an absolute prodigy! There was nothing one could do on that night except be at du Arena! In the end, we, just like the last year, are extremely satisfied, happy and cannot wait for Yasalam 2013 and the artists Flash is to bring to the capital. In the meantime, scan the QR code on the left to check a gazillion of pictures we took over the weekend while we are going to start preparing for that Metallica show in April.
DXB Music Festival The DXB Music Festival is what everyone thought of as ‘Creamfields of Dubai’. Well, I had to go and check it out myself. For starters, the line up was of a different kind, including Far East Movement, Kaskade and Afrojack with Kris Fade making his appearances on the stage to entertain the crowd. The setup was cool, there was a large stage with a smaller one on the side and a couple of tents. Overall, not so shabby at all! Music, on the other hand, was even better than the setup. The crowd, me and my friends included, couldn’t stop dancing; at the point, when ‘Gangnam Style’ came on, the crowd just turned into a massive flash mob! It was absolutely insane! In the end, we loved the event, we clicked a lot of pictures (scan the QRcode to check them out) and hope we’d get an even larger setup for DXB Music Festival’13.

Photo: Shahbaaz Ali Khan You know that when a beloved band decides to break solo, hearts are broken across the world. Little did Swedish House Mafia fans know that their blissful summer was about to be disturbed from the news of the trio breaking up. Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello have shared a successful career for over 7 years as members of Swedish House Mafia. They’ve also produced solo tracks but are popularly known for their chant to Save The World. The trio claim ‘One Last Tour’ as their way of paying gratitude towards fans across the world and which city was best to start with other than Dubai?
One Last Tour Swedish House Mafia
Swedish House Mafia have been performing for four years but gained international recognition with tracks like ‘Don’t You Worry Child’, ‘Save the World’ and ‘Greyhound’. Let me note that this was my first DJ gig so I walked in with neither any armour nor protocol. Albeit a friend of mine, who has frequented DJ gigs before, had cautioned that I carry ear plugs for my first time, but I dismissed the thought with ‘It can’t be that loud’ sigh, I was so wrong. Peppermint Experience kept the crowd entertained before unveiling the DJ band that took the world by storm. After four hours of waiting, fans cheered at the sight of the trio and roared for popular tracks like ‘Greyhound.’ Stunning visual displays and special effects kept the trio’s performance alive. The concert had been declared sold out within weeks, yet people were still seen queuing at the venue with the hope of bagging that sacred chance to be a part of their last act. Swedish House Mafia were in Dubai on November 16th to perform the first in a line of many concerts across the world for their ‘One Last Tour’. Their last act certainly left an impression on the crowd, let’s hope their following gigs also remain a night to remember. by

Photos: Anton Rodionov Creamfields Abu Dhabi 2012 was an event many looked forward to, however when it was announced the festival would be a one-night event instead of last year’s two-day fiesta, many were sceptical. To add salt to the injury it was somewhat uninspiring to see David Guetta headlining the line-up, considering the superstar DJ paid us a visit just nine months before this. Armin Van Buuren was another headliner though, which was more than enough for us to put our dancing shoes on and head out to the capital’s beautiful island of entertainment- Yas Island. Me and my friends were not surprised to see tons of people queuing outside the ginormous du Arena; it was David Guetta, after all, people are absolutely madly in love with his music! A few minutes later and we were in. The crowd was worked up to the max, dancing, jumping, climbing on top of their friends- all that to the great tracks maDJam was playing. Speaking of maDJam, it is indeed strange to see him open for David Guetta and people still wondering who he was; I mean the guy has been playing around the UAE clubs and dance events for at least seven years. Back to the all-beloved DG, the French POP DJ started at about midnight with the all familiar tunes like ‘Tonight’s Gonna Be a Good Night’ and ‘Where Them Girls At’. Everybody was having the time of their life. I, however, was waiting for Armin, as there has been way too much of David Guetta that I can handle.
Creamfields’ 12
Let me remind you that Armin may not have won a Grammy, however the guy has been on top of all the House, Trance and Dance charts for years in addition to be named the #1 DJ in the world by DJ Magazine 2007-2010 and 2012 as well as receiving a Best Trance Artist award from Beat port Music Awards in 2007-2010. Formalities and achievements aside, the guy rocked the house. The stage was gorgeous, the LED technology was at the exact sync with the beat-overall dance heaven. We danced all the way to the last beat. Overall, Creamfields 2012 was a great event, however, even though bringing David Guetta guarantees a packed arena, it would be nice to see Creamfields 2011 level of an event with a more diverse line-up and larger production.

Anti-Valentine by maryam al-irhayim
It’s a Thursday, a regular day of the week. Waking up is exactly the same as every other day. The birds aren’t chirping any louder than usual, and there is no different scent in the airother than the possible increase of pollution, all thanks to greeting card companies (who are happily cutting down tree after tree).
Obviously there is no apocalyptic invasion of a baby wearing nothing but a diaper, whilst shooting individuals with a bow and arrow. What concerns me is the fact that, if a baby really did fly around earth shooting people, most of us would be petrified; probably call for military action almost instantly! So as my understanding goes towards this holiday, it’s actually quite normal to expect a mere infant, that hasn’t learnt how to go potty yet, go around and shoot people on their behinds and supposedly make them fall in love with the next person they see. Technically an individual,(whether male or female), has no choice but to love someone.
Valentine’s Day definition: apocalypse of flying babies with diaper bombs and bow and arrows attacking innocent individual’s emotions. There seems to be many conspiracy theories to do with the month of February; generally based around the common theme of price-inflation… You see, on a normal day of the year flowers can vary from AED 5 (for one rose) to AED 90 for a bouquet. However, on February 14th these prices can triple, and this is deemed as ‘normal’ because on this one particular day, lovers are indoctrinated into thinking that these cheesy and supposedly ‘romantic’ gestures are completely worth everyone’s time and money. Couples use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to make up for all of the damage they’ve caused during the year. That’s right; all 364 days of the year spent fighting are tossed away and become a distant memory. Although expectations may be high, Valentine’s Day has become digitally redefined, and 75% of the day is spent sharing feelings with each other through cell phones. I don’t know about you, but ‘luv’ is not love; and what’s worse is the fact that love shouldn’t be said behind the screen of an electronic device- it’s said faceto-face (or at least that’s the way it’s supposed to be). Now-a-days, some common corny gift ideas include: flowers, (a widely used gesture of love), mainly red roses are given on this special occasion; which is quite strange since pink is known to be the colour of love, red is more to do with blood. Let’s face it, flowers will wilt away and die, therefore ending up in the garbage, which eventually is dumped in the middle of nowhere. Another common gift is Chocolate, after consumption, chocolate exits the digestive system as a form of waste into a toilet, where it is then flushed away and the only thing your loved one will be gaining is...calories. There’s always a group of people who fall into the pit of despair, simply because they think they have no one to share this day with. They are targeted by the mass market to buy chocolate for themselves and watch gooey goo romantic films like ‘the notebook’ where it’s either going to be a happily ever after or a more tragic ending which is bound to bring its viewers to more tears. There are seven billion people in the world. You’re telling me, you can’t find one individual that you can fool into spending the rest of your life with? So instead of crying and labelling yourself #foreveralone with 27 cats, calm down and stop over-exaggerating. Try to think that the reason you don’t need to celebrate this phony “special day” is because you are strong, smart, and independent and won’t settle for less than what you deserve. Or you’re just too young to even be thinking about it. So instead of doing nothing, why not set yourself a goal which could possibly make you a better person? You need to learn to love yourself before you think about that someone in the future who you’ll be spending the rest of your life with. After all you are your best friend so why not treat yourself to something special? How you spend your valentine’s day is up to you, and for all you couples out there I have nothing against your love for each other- just remember to love each other 365 days of the year (not just on Valentine’s day).

Guys
A Play Called ‘World’ “All the world is a stage and all the men and woman are merely players,” once said the virtuoso of theatre and playwrights, Shakespeare. What exactly did he mean by all the world’s a stage? An unusual perspective he had formed comparing us to actors and our lives to a play. Nonetheless, surely Shakespeare was right, as we are all playing our roles in life for a specific purpose, forming our character and discovering ourselves and personalities day by day. But have you ever considered how clothes, shoes and accessories define us and interpret our persona? Take for example you met someone new while at a party, ever wondered what impression your clothes gave about you? Truth is, you are what you wear, and everyone is unique in their own way in terms of personality and style. It’s not about being materialistic. No, it’s only human nature. We happen to unsurprisingly form an opinion of a person without even meeting them, just by sensing the energy and vibes they give off, being surrounded by a whole new atmosphere of a different character; after all we are not just solid blocks. Luckily, nowadays forming an opinion of a person is not so hard as we can try and read their personalities and qualities from the way they dress. by laura tibi
THE ONE WHO MAKES US LAUGH
THE SECRETIVE, COOL AND QUIET ONE Guys with these personalities aren’t the very talkative type but they have a lot to say and escape into fantasies of their own, daydreaming with a wild imagination. However, they find it difficult to trust people and open up. People with such a character have a very covert style and don’t like to reveal too much. They prefer oversized hoodies with a pair of Vans to feel comfortable and at ease throughout the day. Their palette of colours mainly consists of dark tones of black and grey or of plain white flannel tops. A style as such makes it harder for people to read the personality as the simplicity creates a sense of mystery.
You can usually tell if a guy has a good sense of humour by the way he dresses. The recipe is really easy, all you need are a pair of dark denim jeans and a bright coloured button up shirt. However, if paired with a bowtie it would create a certain fascination with the person’s character as it expresses their creativity on a comic yet amusing and original level.
Girls THE LOUD, FUN LOVING AND CAREFREE ONE This style shouldn’t just speak a person’s personality, but scream it! Mixing up bright funky colours is ideally their thing. Loose tops, cardigans and comfy sweaters express their carefree and light-hearted attitude, while pairing them up with an oversized tote loosely swinging on their shoulders and a pair of converse to suggest that they’re not afraid to fool around and get messy.
THE FEMININE, WHIMSICAL AND POETIC ONE This is a very fresh and elegant style worn by a very expressive personality and one that admires the arts. The style of such a daydreamer usually includes very feminine cuts and plenty of dresses and skirts. A modern day Juliet is what I call such a personality. They take the chance to dress up in flowing gowns any time and they prefer soft colours and patterns which move freely around them. If you spot someone ditching the jeans and going for a cute summer dress and pastel flats then they would usually have a girly yet very kind hearted and graceful personality and such people sometimes see things from a more creative and artistic perspective.
THE GLAMOROUS, POISED AND BOLD ONE This type of style is not seen very often as it takes a daring and confident character to pull it off. From wearing a little black dress and sky high stilettos at a night out, to a pair of skinny jeans and pumps at the mall- remaining trendy from head to cuticle is essential. They like to experiment and take daring risks with different materials, patterns and colours, maintaining a creative style which defines their confident character and fascinates any passersby.

DJ Saif “My biggest challenge was getting myself noticed and growing within the music and radio industry. Getting a job on the radio was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.
45
Saif, you’re a student at AUD, have a job at Radio1 (104.1 Dubai/ 100.5 Abu Dhabi) and even DJ at nightclubs. How have you managed to juggle all of these things as well as have a social life? From Sunday to Thursday I do a show called ‘Saif & Sound’ from 7pm till 10 pm. On Friday, I do a show called ‘The Friday Format’, alongside DJ Brooklyn. My only day off is Saturday, and I also DJ in nightclubs. To be honest I don’t have a social life, my social life is completely dead. The only social time I get, is with my twin brother. When I come home, I just talk to him about my day and go to sleep. Sometimes on my day off (Saturday) I’ll drive back home to Abu Dhabi to see my family. For me personally, my generation doesn’t understand that nowadays you should work hard in order to reach the point where you want to be. My life is very hectic and tough, but it’s worth it; I just want to accomplish something in my life. It’s amazing how all of your dreams are coming true. What’s your secret? I just follow my dreams, I work hard. I never take breaks and I never get bored. As I told you, I don’t have a social life. I call my mother and complain to her that life can be difficult at times; it’s all about work, work, work! I don’t get holidays; I don’t get to go out with my friends like other people I know, but in the long run it’s going to pay off. Soon I’ll be able to rest when I’m at a good point in my career. With persistence and hard work, achieving your dreams can be possible.
DJ Saif is not only a presenter on one of the leading radio stations in the UAE, he is also one of the most widely accredited music mixers in the country. At only 21, this Jordanian university student has made his mark in the music industry. Born and brought up in Abu Dhabi, Saif is a student at AUD and an aspiring DJ, who manages to stay grounded with his balance of work, studies and friends. With his amazing talent for music and mixing, Saif is definitely one to watch in the future. one8one caught up with this young star, where he told us about his experiences, big breaks and the importance of just being yourself.
How old were you when you realised becoming a DJ was what you wanted to do? It all started when I was 15 years old. Unfortunately, none of my family members had any interest or passion for music. However, for some reason, I had a very unique relationship with music. When I was 15 I went to a Christmas party and met someone who was a DJ. Throughout the whole party I sat next to him and was mesmerized by the things he was doing. The next morning, I told my family that I wanted to be just like him one day. The advice I got was to try and save some money until the end of the semester in high school to be able to buy the required equipment. I only saved AED 1,500, but the cheapest set was AED 2,500 so my mother lent me some money.
46
Why do you DJ? How do you feel behind the decks? My main goal in life is to entertain people. I love making people smile and feel good about themselves. Obviously the main reason I do what I do is because I love music, and love to see the effect my music has on listeners. What would you say was your first break when it came to the radio and DJ industry? So what basically happened was... I was bored and was like, ‘you know, I want some action in my life’ I used to be a big fan of Radio1, so I decided to apply for an internship, I kept applying for around two months, however I never received a reply. One day I won a prize on the show, and when the lady called me I asked her about applying for an internship. She gave me the manager’s email so I could contact him directly. As soon as I got back home, I sent the email that would soon change my life forever. I was so surprised to get a response the next morning. I was asked to come down to the radio station for a formal interview. Luckily, they accepted me into the business and I started my internship the next day. During my two weeks, I was very active on the radio. After the internship ended, I was offered to start training at the station to become a full time presenter on the show. Who or what has inspired you to become a DJ and why is this? Music is my main inspiration. I’ve been a big fan of music since I was a little kid. I listen to music for about six hours a day on average, and try to motivate myself through the different genres of music available to me. How are you finding your media classes at AUD? I love them! I’m actually one of the ‘good students’ at the university. I try to study hard and get the best grades possible. I find my courses so useful and beneficial for my career. It’s so cool, because I get to talk to my class about my work experience and it seems to be helping them. What’s a typical day like for Saif Alnaji? I wake up early in the morning, around 8:00, and have a HUGE breakfast at
home! (I love food!!) After that, I leave for university, have my classes which last until 2:00pm on average. Sometimes I have interviews with people between school and my job. By 4:00pm I’m at the radio station even though my show starts at 7:00pm, because I have a lot of preparation that goes on beforehand. I go live on air from 7:00 to10:00pm and once I finish I usually go for dinner or gigs at clubs. Apart from DJ’ing, do you have any other interests or hobbies? Yeah definitely! I’m a professional soccer player, my dream as a little kid was to become a famous footballer. To be frank, I’m an athlete. I love all kinds of sports such as golf and running, they give me such a rush! Your mother has obviously been a great support in your life, what’s the best professional advice you’ve received? The business I’m in right now is very critical. For example, when you do something good nobody applauds you, however when you do something wrong or bad there are a lot of people who criticise you. This can get really tough to handle at times, so the best advice my mother has given me is ‘to always strive to do your best and never let anything come between you and your dream.’ Is there a lot of competition in the DJ industry? Oh definitely! There’s big-time competition in the UAE as well as internationally. It used to be really hard to get gigs because I was under 21 and wasn’t allowed in clubs. However it’s getting easier and I’m slowly growing. I try to get along with other DJ’s because I feel like we’re all trying to achieve the same thing “Putting UAE on the map in terms of music” Where do you see yourself in the next five years? I want to continue doing the exact same thing I am doing now, but I’m definitely planning on expanding my knowledge in the TV industry. I want to keep my radio career because it’s connecting me with my music and I love doing it, but I want to try new things in the media industry in the future.
Do you have any tips or advice for aspiring DJs within the UAE who want to break out into the scene like you? First of all, just be yourself. Don’t imitate anybody else, because people want to hear new things, not something that you’ve copied off of somebody else. I can assure you that if you put 110% into what you do in any aspect of your life you will achieve it with flying colours. What has been your biggest challenge so far, and how have you managed it? My biggest challenge was getting myself noticed and growing within the music and radio industry. Getting a job on the radio was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. Although that was really tough, I could never forget about learning English. Most of the radio presenters here in the UAE are Westerners, who all speak English fluently. I, on the other hand, studied Arabic at school for years and barely spoke any English. This meant that I had to work ten times harder than any other radio presenter here in the UAE because of the language barrier. Who are your favourite musicians? Both locally and internationally? There is this amazing producer/DJ/ rapper called Ryan Leslie, who really inspires and motivates me not only in my music, but also in my everyday life. Whenever I’m in a bad mood, his music completely lifts my spirit and makes me feel good about what I do. Saif is constantly updating his fans on current events and gigs. Make sure to check out his Facebook account: facebook.com/saifradio1 as well as his twitter account: @DjSaifOfficial by

Gizmos & Gadgets
It’s the new year, it’s the new season, and it’s time for the new gadgets! 2012 was an exciting year to say the least; we’ve seen the launch of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Samsung delivered a top-tier Galaxy S III and Note II, HTC smacked us with beautiful One series and gorgeous 8 series, Nokia launched their stunning Lumia series, while Apple went totally bonkers and released two new iPads, iPad mini, iPhone 5, new iPod Touch, iPod nano, Macbook Pro Retina Display series and incredibly thin and beautiful iMacs. We’ve had a couple of these devices to play with and here is what we’ve got to say.
by ANTON RODIONOV
iPAD MINI The new iPad mini is here and oh how much we wish they had gone with a higher res display. While the build quality is unmatched by competition, the screen resolution has to be taken with a grain of salt. iPad mini toutes the same 1024x768 resolution at 163 ppi as the iPad 2, but at the mere 7.9 inch size. Its main competitor, Google Nexus 7, for instance, has got a 1280x800 at 216 ppi, giving you a much clearer and crisper image. Another thing to remember is while iPad mini starts at AED1,299, Nexus 7 ranges anywhere between AED 995 and AED 1,299. Other highlights of the device are the new and improved cameras, 1.2 MP for the front and 5 MP for the rear sensors. The rear camera is that of the iPhone 4S, so you’ve definitely got a better lens than the iPad 2 offers. The new form factor is stunning; Apple managed to squeeze the 4:3 ratio screen into the tiny body of 200mm in height, 134.7 mm in width, 7.2 mm in thickness and a feather light 308g, leaving you with barely any bezel on the sides of the screen. All in all, this is a good device for those on the run; it’s got the best eco-system with over 275,000 iPad-optimized apps, however if you’ve used a retina screen before, you will notice the pixels and it’s not as pretty as Apple would like us to think it is.
iMAC Finally! It wouldn’t be wrong to say this is the most anticipated and delayed product refresh every Apple user and a fan couldn’t wait to get their hands on. The new iMac is a beauty to look at and use. Apple has reduced 40% of volume, resulting in an extremely thin design with the edges as thin as 5 mm. To get to this size, they had to let go of the CD drive, but have no fear, you can still go to a store and pick up Apple SuperDrive for AED 329. On a positive note, the screen, while remaining the same in resolution as the previous iMacs, uses the new technology Apple has implemented in their other product lines by gluing the display to the actual glass. This technology doesn’t only allow the new iMac to be skinny, it makes everything look better and brighter. Additionally, the glare has been reduced by 70% and while still reflective, the monitor seems to be much better. Another noticeable thing is the new Fusion Drive, which Apple explains to be a mix of a traditional Hard Drive and 128GB of SSD Flash Drive. In theory, this would let the system store the main apps and system components on the SSD to provide a faster performance; another thing to note is that OSX is programmed to learn which third party apps are used most so it could store the important files on SSD as well. Overall, this is a definite upgrade for those who’ve been waiting for a new iMac for years, that is unless you absolutely cannot survive without a CD drive. This machine is fast, thin, beautifully built and overall gorgeous.
iPAD 4TH GENERATION What is there to say about the latest iteration of the top tablet device? Well, for starters, there is no faster tablet on the market; the fourth generation iPad toutes Apple’s latest A6X processor, which is, in fact, faster than the iPhone 5’s A6 chip and that thing is blazingly fast! Apple has said they’d increased graphics and overall performance by a double, so that should make the gamers happy. It’s worth adding that with the launch of iPhone 5 and the fifth generation iPod Touch, Apple has properly moved into using their new Lightening connector and this iPad got the revamp too. Visually it’s hard to differentiate between the fourth and the third generations of this device, leaving us with an old-looking iPad for another eight to ten months. Overall, this iPad is good for those looking to upgrade from their iPad 2 or iPad first generation, however there is no actual need for the third generation owners to consider this device, unless, of course, you’ve got money to burn. AED 1,999 for 16 GB Wi-Fi only and up.
SONY XPERIA Z Sony has just announced its new flagship smartphone Sony Xperia Z. First and foremost, this is the most gorgeous hardware I have ever seen to come out of Sony labs. It features a full 1080 HD display with the ratio of 441PPI, 2GB of RAM, same 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 found on Nexus 4, 16GB of internal flash storage with SD card expandability capabilities, LTE and font and back glass body, continuing the design language Apple started in 2010 with its iPhone 4 and LG reintroduced with its Nexus 4. Many would complain as glass is not one of the hardest materials out there, but I’d say, if you worry, get a bumper case, it protects the sides and leaves the front and back open, while still elevated to avoid scratches. On a software side Xperia Z runs Android JellyBean 4.1, but Sony promises an upgrade to 4.2 very soon. One last point, Xperia Z is waterproof! Yes, finally there is a high-end smartphone that you can drop into the pool, sink or whatever else and not get a heart attack, while looking for a bag of rice. Sony says the phone can stay in water for up to 30 minutes functioning perfectly well. All in all, this phone can be finally looked at as Sony stepping up their game to compete with Samsungs and Apples of the world.
SONY XPERIA TABLET Z Enter Sony Xperia Tablet Z, Sony’s latest and, probably, the most ambitious tablet to date. With its 10.1” 1920x1200 resolution display, Qualcomm quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 32 GB internal storage, 8.1 MP back and 2.2 MP front cameras this tablet packs some muscle in an extremely slender profile of 6.9 mm (thinner than iPad mini) at a weight of 495 g. It makes me wonder how on Earth Sony managed to squeeze all that hardware goodness into such a small profile made of hardened glass. The outer design language continues to channel the minimalist look of its phone counterpart Xperia Z, featuring glass front and back. The tablet has not been released just yet, so we are left hoping for the best price. In the meantime, take a seat and decide whether you’d want a black or white Xperia Tablet Z.
NEXUS 4 Here is a device many Android fans were waiting for. Google’s Nexus 4 is the follow up player to the last year’s Galaxy Nexus. The display is what you would expect: 4.7”, 720 HD at 318PPI, powered by the same 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 4 that is found on Xperia Z. It packs 2GB RAM and 8 or 16 GB options of internal storage with no SD expandability. The latter would come as a blow to pretty much anyone in 2013, as 8GB is barely enough for anyone to use the phone comfortably. Another minus is Nexus 4’s lack of LTE. The hardware supports LTE, however it requires a hack and still doesn’t guarantee you’d have it functioning in the UAE, as the bands might be different. On a plus side, the phone is beautifully designed with front and back sporting a hardened glass; Nexus 4 runs the latest Android 4.2 as a true Nexus device. It might seem like a tough call on this one so it’s all up to your personal preference.

Is Crazy Subjective? by
MARYAM AL-IRHAYIM
In the Zombie culture we live in now it seems not going with the flow gets you labelled as the “crazy” one. So in a parallel universe let’s say partying is the norm and the ones who study are the rebels. But who are the crazy ones in our society? It seems that everyone who isn’t “Normal” is Crazy. We have labelled many great people as crazy in the past but now regard them as geniuses from Albert Einstein to Steve Jobs.
“ We are quite quick to judge and therefore our judgements are not as accurate as we think they are.”
On our little blue planet we can make up our minds about someone in less than a millisecond! Based on what someone is wearing, their career choice, the amount of sleep they get, political views, technology they use and the most common one- an individual’s taste in entertainment; whether they prefer to listen to ‘The Beatles’ or ‘One Direction’. You probably have a few thoughts about me already without even knowing me. Everyone can admit to having judged someone based on one of these things at least once. If I saw a man at a grocery store wearing leather from head to toe, I would prejudge him the same way you would. “He probably drives a Harley Davidson bike and belongs in some sort of gang.” When in reality he could be playing a role in a play (highly unlikely) or could be an average person who buys groceries, has family, hasn’t been to jail and follows the law. We are quite quick to judge and therefore our judgements are not as accurate as we think they are. So how could we judge someone and decide if they are crazy or not without knowing their past or knowing them as a person? From someone who has been called “crazy” multiple times, I can tell you honestly that I could never make up my mind as to whether it was a good or a bad thing. It seems we have different meanings for the word “crazy” now-a-days. dictionary.com defines the word as mentally deranged. While urban dictionaries define it as a word which is often misinterpreted, because it is usually used to describe people that are random, hyper, creative, and flat-out fun to hang out with. That’s why crazy is subjective...Now, I am not sure what they meant by calling me “crazy”, but it doesn’t bother me. If someone describes me using the same words used to describe Steve Jobs and many other great entrepreneurs who changed the world, then in my world it’s not a bad thing. Having a different view than everyone else is actually a good thing. It means you’re unique and are your own person; not the same as the other seven billion people out there. So just be yourself. Who knows? You could be the next “crazy” person to change the world forever again. Here is a quote that I think would best describe that average “crazy” person out there...“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people, who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” Apple Inc.

A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD
PARKER Starring: Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez
Starring: Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney
Jason Statham returns in yet another action film that looks more or less like his other films. This time around, there’s a heist element reminiscent of his underrated ‘The Bank Job’ and he’s paired with Jennifer Lopez. Expect more of the same, which may or may not be a good thing.
John McClane is back! The iconic hero, played by Bruce Willis, returns again in yet another Die Hard instalment. John McClane travels to Russia to help his estranged son, but finds himself caught in the middle of a terrorist plot. Once again, Its John McClane versus the terrorists, for the fifth time around.
BEAST OF THE SOUTHERN WILD Starring: Quvenzhane Wallis, Dwight Henry Beasts of the Southern Wild is one the year’s most surprising hits, a small independent film that is getting nominated for almost every important award internationally. It is a fantasy film that tells the story of Hushpuppy, a six year old girl who must save her community from the Aurochs, a race of prehistoric beasts.
HITCHCOCK
BROKEN CITY
MAMA
Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson.
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones
Starring: Jessica Chastain
Few directors, past and present, can claim to be as influential and important to cinema as Alfred Hitchcock, and the film Hitchcock comes to celebrate the making of arguably his most important work, the horror film Psycho. Hitchcock tells the story of Alfred Hitchcock, who right after the success of his film North by Northwest, decides to adapt the lurid horror novel, Psycho, into a film, to the chagrin of his wife and artistic collaborator, Alma.
Film noir is a risky genre to pull off, but Broken City tries to compensate for looking like a run of the mill noir flick with a stellar cast that includes Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Mark Wahlberg stars as a private investigator hired by a mayor to investigate his wife, only to be double crossed by him.
Guillermo Del Toro returns to producing another solidlooking horror film that he adapted from a pretty freaky short film that’s now online. The film follows a couple who take care of their young nieces who were left alone in the woods for five years, but realise that they may not really be as alone as they thought. The trailer looks spooky and expect a restrained old school genre experience.

THE SECRETS OF THE IMMORTAL NICHOLAS FLAMEL Series by Michael Scott
Through this series we are introduced to Nicholas Flamel, a man who has been said to have died 700 years after his birth on 28th September, 1330. He is said to be the greatest Alchemyst of his day, as it is believed he discovered the secret of eternal life. Though the records say he died in 1418, the tomb is empty.
We follow Nicholas Flamel through his life, that he has been living only because he has been making the elixir of life for him and his wife for centuries. He found the recipe for the secret of eternal life hidden among the encrypted pages of the most powerful book, that he protects with his life- the book of Abraham the Mage. The book has the power to destroy the world if put in the wrong hands. A group of Elders has sent Dr. John Dee to steal it so that they can destroy the world and re-make it the way they see fit. Humankind would not see what hit them until it was too late. Their only hope is a prophecy, and if it is true, the only ones who can save the world are the twins Sophie and Josh Newman. We follow Sophie and Josh Newman as they are thrown into a world they were taught to believe was true. Their bond as twins is tested, tried and pulled apart, until they lose trust.
MISTBORN TRILOGY Series by Brandon Sanderson This trilogy introduces us to a world that has been slowly wilting away, ever since a prophecy told of a hero who would save the world, a young man to fight the darknes. He failed. Years later the world becomes a wasteland; covered in ash and mist, ruled by their immortal ‘hero’, the Lord Ruler- a tyrant. Through the books we follow a crew of talented thieves with powers known as Allomancy where they set out to overthrow the Lord Ruler from his rule of tyranny and dare dream of ending the empire, even when they know that every other revolt has failed miserably. We follow their journey as they create a new kind of revolt that calls for an ultimate sacrifice, a brilliant, cunning mastermind and a unique heroine, a street urchin with powers she has no knowledge she has, a power of a Mistborn. The story is fast paced and enthralling filled with twists and turns that keep you guessing, thinking and wondering right up till the end. Brandon Sanderson has taken the old fantasy novel cliché and twisted and turned it in such a way that you no longer recognize it. The Alloy of Law is the fourth book of the series but it starts a new story line, a continuation of the Mistborn series but three hundred years in the future and the story is continued over into the next two books which haven’t been released yet. Mistborn trilogy includes The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages.
Rami Al Otaibi ARTIST
“UAE is becoming an art hub, and there are lots of competitions going on right now. “

Anybody could take a picture and Photoshop it to make it fancy, but to create a real digital art piece takes passion, creativity, and willingness to sacrifice. Rami Al Otaibi is a digital artist who has beautifully translated his inspirations into real art. He has recently graduated from the American University of Sharjah with a major in Architecture. We recently got the chance to catch up with Rami at his office where we asked him about his work and life. Once we introduced ourselves and got some background information, we were ready to dig deep into the world of Rami and his Architecture. After asking him when he realized art and architecture were the dreams he wanted to pursue he immediately emerged himself into the days of his childhood, “Since I was a little kid, I loved colouring and painting.... and I also wanted to be an architect, funny enough I had no idea what architecture was until I grew a little older. Whenever I used to tell my parents that I wanted to be an artist, they were not really happy since I was good at science and math. Luckily, I found architecture a common ground between the two, which made my parents happy and allowed me to do my art at the same time.’’ People often assume that the work of a digital artist is quite raw. However, Rami told us that there’s a lot that happens ‘behind the scenes’ before the actual design is complete. Rami prints a picture then sketches over it, colours and scans it. It is later edited on a computer. The whole process can take up to two days or even two weeks depending on what is being created. When we asked about his favourite piece of personal work, he answered with, “It’s like asking a mother to choose her favourite child! I could never pick just one.” Rami was overjoyed to explain his thought process behind the widely accredited ‘Nafs Waheda’, One Soul. “It is a depiction of an infrastructural installation that portrays a sufficient desire of coexistence and coherence amid communities of the contemporary world, an example which I have subsisted in my years of living in the United Arab Emirates. An Islamic country that has its heart open to civilizations of diverse cultures that coincide in harmony to realize that they are of the same soul, also known as- Nafs Waheda (in Arabic). The form of this infrastructure is an extrusion of the analyzed and deconstructed lines of movement of various prayers and rituals that are performed by people of various religions. These lines convey a striking amount of harmony and intertwining formal quality that I have interlaced with verses of the Koran.’’ “I am still an upcoming artist” Rami explained when we asked him for advice he would give to budding architects. However, he then added, “UAE is becoming an art hub, and there are lots of competitions going on right now. Youth who want their art to be displayed should participate as much as they can, and take advantage of the opportunities available to us within Dubai.” by

We, at one8one, are all about crazy ideas so this month we decided to buy all the chocolates we could think of and taste them for you. The sugar got to our heads to a point where we began giving the chocolates personalities. So if the chocolates were people here is who we think they would be.
Chocolatude by
FARAH HAMDY & MOHAMMED AL QAMZI
BOO FROM MONSTER INC by Dolce Antico It’s cute, it’s pink, it’s a sugar overdose, its Dolce Antico’s Cheese cake truffle! Enrobed in strawberry milk coating and stuffed with cream and strawberry jello, this beauty tastes as sweet as its looks convey. It’s every bit of the adorable “Boo” from “Monster Inc”, sweet, endearing and simply irresistible.
PEANUT CHOCOLATE by Gharoui
WELL BALANCED by Patchi Well balanced. The perfect word to describe this Patchi. Well balanced in its texture, its taste and appearance. It’s that guy with the perfect life and perfect personality. Hardworking, confident, interesting and good looking too! It’s the Tony Stark of chocolates. It touches down on many flavours all pleasing and suiting to the many different tastes.
At first sight this peanut shaped chocolate from Gharoui doesn’t seem very interesting but once you pop it in your mouth its true colours are revealed. If this chocolate was an era it would be the 1920’s. Or rather a young woman of that time. On surface quite unassuming and conservative yet truly exuberant and flamboyant. The chocolate and peanut paste with which it’s stuffed gives it a unique and extravagant taste that lasts for a while.
MODEL by Jeff de Burges Gorgeous and breathtaking, this dark chocolate cornet from the wonderful Jeff De Burges has a sense of charm and elegance to it like that of a model. So lovely indeed that one would feel bad for even thinking about eating it. Its captivating looks gives it heavenly qualities deprived from any regular dark chocolate just like a model’s beauty gives her angelic characteristics and charm.
BLAIR WALDORF by Godiva
LADY GAGA by Godiva Usually when you’re having dark chocolate you tend to expect other flavours to be infused into the chocolate itself like cream, truffles, etc. This little dark chocolate sphere from Godiva is encrusted in a funky hazelnut exterior which gives off an edgy underground vibe but it’s an illusion. The nuts are really just smoke and mirrors which mask the true taste of the chocolate, which is generic dark chocolate. Among the ensemble, this little piece is the Lady Gaga of the lot. Still good, very generic but it leaves much to be desired.
THE GODFATHER by Dolce Antico
THE CLOWN by Galler Spotted and funky on the outside, you know what you’re getting when you’re having this little concoction from Galler. You know you’re in for a treat when you notice the (very) dark chocolate exterior, and know that it’s going to be interesting since it’s also bedazzled in orange spots. It doesn’t disappoint. Creamy dark chocolate goo with an epic tangerine infusion, it gives your taste buds an amazing performance. It’s the Robin Williams of the chocolate brigade and we love it.
As a rule of thumb, truffles are considered royalty among chocolates and this particular truffle by Dolce Antico is no exception. It’s dark, powerful, commanding, and just a bit brooding. It commands the rest of the truffles like Vito Corleone commanded his mob. It’s intimidating, masculine, and expects respect from its peers.
Dark, sultry, and sassy are three words one could use to describe Godiva’s dark chocolate and raspberry. Thick, mouth-watering dark chocolate sprinkled with just a little dried raspberry gives one the impression that it’s a confident Blair Waldorf type of character. It’s confident, it knows what it wants from life, and leaves a long-lasting impression once your encounter is over.

Runnnnnnn... by

The human body is designed to be able to run a very long way at a pretty good pace, as that’s how our ancestors survived. Now we obviously lead very different lives to those of our predecessors, and most people are now much more prone to injury than they would have been in the past, especially if they lead otherwise sedentary lives. This isn’t to say that running is bad for you – that’s absolutely not the case. In fact, running is one of the best possible ways to give your fitness and overall health a boost. You just have to take care to avoid any injuries that could set you right back at square one. Here are a few simple tips that will help you to keep on running, completely injury-free. Following these six tips could well be what keeps your running injury-free. You don’t want to be one of the thousands of runners who are under enforced rest due to preventable injuries, so make sure you take the necessary steps that will keep you on your feet.
THE RIGHT TAKE IT STEADY SHOES Most running injuries are Stripped to the bare essentials, all a runner really needs is a pair of shoes, and choosing the right pair for your feet can make all the difference to your running. A well fitted, carefully selected, high quality pair of running shoes can help with many of the biggest problems runners face, from high arches and overpronation to blisters and stress fractures. Any good specialist running shop should offer a gait analysis (often free of charge), and expert advice on choosing the shoes that are perfect for you.
caused by doing too much too soon. It can be easy to go too hard before your body is ready, especially when you’re just starting out, but pacing yourself is important. Your muscles will adapt much faster than your tendons and ligaments can, and your joints might well struggle with the extra stress as well. Try to make sure your total mileage never increases by more than 10% per week.
BOSE SIE2I This collaboration between Reebok and Bose has been proved highly successful . Meet Bose SIE2i- the best headphones I have tried to jog with to date. Apart from excellent sound, this headset provides us with an excellent in-ear holding system and waterproof treatment. The headphones come with a specifically-designed clip on for ears, which is simply a soft rubbery material that you have to put into the ear. It’s comfy, durable and, most importantly, without noise cancellation, as one would prefer being aware of the sounds around them when running. Overall, I would highly recommend this product, especially for those with iPhones and iPods ,except the latest 4”Apple devices, as it comes with an arm band accessory. Now, let’s just hope the larger arm band is made ASAP for those new iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 7G owners. by
BE FLEXIBLE Warming up and stretching before going for a run will prepare your muscles for what’s ahead, and your times will improve as well. Stretching after a run is also important, not only because exercise shortens your muscles, but also to reduce your recovery time. All this stretching will inevitably make you more supple and flexible, which will also lessen your chances of pulling a muscle.

STRENGTHEN YOUR GLUTES
GO BACK TO NATURE
REST AND RECOVER
The gluteus muscles are of vital importance to any runner, with established links between weak glutes and a plethora of common running injuries. These muscles are supposed to keep your body in perfect alignment, keep your hips steady and provide much of the forward driving force when you run, but many athletes still neglect them. Fortunately, there’s plenty of readily available information on simple exercises that will help, so get working on those glutes!
Running on asphalt, or worse still concrete, is a surefire way to destroy your knees. These surfaces are far harder than anything nature intended us to run on, and the modern cushioning technology in your shoes won’t completely eliminate the stress on your joints from the constant pounding on unforgiving roads and sidewalks. Running on grass or dirt trails is the perfect alternative – your knees will thank you, and running through the woods or in a park will also do wonders for your mind and soul.
People ignore this part of training more than any other, even though it requires the least effort! At least one day each week where you do nothing physically demanding, except perhaps a little stretching, is definitely a good idea. It’s when you rest that your body has the chance to recover, repair itself, and get stronger before the next onslaught of exercise. Eating a healthy, balanced diet and staying well-hydrated will also help with your recovery, as well as bringing an array of other health benefits.

Mubadala Tennis
The courts at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex, Zayed Sports City were on fire for 3 whole days from 27th -29th December, 2012. The complex was abuzz as a series of exhibition tennis matches between top world ranking seeds unravelled. World rank #1 Novak Djokovic, #3 Andy Murray, #5 David Ferrer, #6 Tomas Berdych, #9 Janko Tipsarevic and #11 Nicolas Almagro all exhibited their passion and entertained tennis lovers residing here. It was largely a divine experience yet again this time for tennis enthusiasts who had the opportunity to not just watch their tennis favorites play but also play with them in the coaching clinics! Mubadala made sure it was a complete satisfying and overwhelming experience for the tennis followers, by having provisions for autograph sessions of each player. They made it a holistic experiential event for visirtors by having interactive gaming zone at a new ‘Interactive Tennis Zone’ for children of all ages. Cafeterias and lounges were set up right outside the stadium where live streaming of matches was on. Also, one of the events that made the tournament all the more special was a short game of doubles tie-break play-off to ten points played between Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych. The catch in this match was that each of these players were partnered by U.A.E’s Tennis Champions, U.A.E. rank #2, 22year old Hamad Janahi and #3, 18 year old Abdulrahman Al Janahi.
The event was brilliantly managed and secured. Even when Rafael Nadal, the favourite, pulled out at the last moment due to health issues, the event went on smoothly with Nicolas Almagro replacing him. The tournament’s first match was blessed by drizzles right at the start of the match, stalling it for a while. The pressure on the players was evidently less as it was an exhibition tournament. They were out on the serene blue court to have fun and put up a marvellous show for their ardent fans. The matches were a treat to watch with the energy, power play and passion the players exuded. The surprise deal was the end moment entrant Nicolas playing a powerful game with top seed Novak Djokovic for the final match. The defending champion, Novak claimed back his title again this time by winning a marathon match lasting a little more than two and half hours. It was a starstruck experience of a lifetime and we look forward to another one next year.

Photography TIPS FROM A PRO What is ISO? An ISO (International Organization for Standardization) number tells you how sensitive sensor is to light. The higher the ISO the less amount of light required to produce an image, and vice versa. A lower ISO from 50 to 200 is good for bright scenes like the outdoors in full daylight. However, be careful when using high ISO settings from 800 to 1600 in dark lit scenes, as it may increase digital noise (presence of pixels whose colour and brightness is unrelated to the subject). This means that higher ISO produce grainier and less quality pictures.
What can you do to avoid digital noise? Sometimes it becomes a stylistic choice to make an image look grainy. Its distinct visual qualities can be used for special effects. But if you want to keep a picture with maximum sharpness and minimum graininess, you should select lower ISO settings and try to put your camera on a tripod (or any stable surface) particularly for situations in a dark environment.

Letters to a Coach Get advice from our life coach Maria Chatila. Write to her at coach@one8one.net. All writing will remain anonymous.
Q.
I am 17 years old and in year 11. For a fair while now things have been bad at home. I live with my mom and younger brother. My older sister moved out about 6 months ago, her and mom didn’t get along at all. When my sister was living with us, mom and I got along just fine. Now that my sister is gone I’m basically the target. Nothing I do is ever good enough. I’ll clean the entire house and miss one thing and I’ll get my head chewed off for it and not even a thank you for cleaning the house. I hate to think how many times I’ve gone to bed in tears because of my mother. It upsets me and frustrates me. I just really don’t want to be around her and it is pretty much impossible to talk to her about anything serious. I don’t want to live with her anymore, but I feel as though I have no choice. What should I do?
Maria V. Chatila is presently living in Dubai with her husband and three children. She works as a Family & Relationship Life Coach. She is dedicated to helping teens, families, couples and individuals to build personal and family awareness, while creating empowering personal relationships. Maria gives talks and workshops and also works privately with clients.
Oh, mother... This is a very difficult situation for both yourself and your mother. From your letter, I understood that your sister may have been struggling with the same issues as you are now. You did not mention your father so I am assuming that your mother is a single parent. Although it is very challenging to be with your mother, try to detach from the frustrations and the hurt and look at the situation from a different perspective. Is there anything going on in your mother’s life that she may be unconsciously pouring into her relationships with her daughters? Sometimes parents don’t realise their behaviour is unsettling and hurtful. Do understand that I am not excusing your mother’s attitude with you girls; I am just wanting you to take a look at life through her eyes. This is a very effective process and the following steps will help you do this. Start by taking 3 chairs and placing them in a triangle. Be sure to leave at least 3 feet of space between them. Place A4 paper on each chair. The first chair should have ‘your name’ written on the paper. The second chair should have ‘mum’ and the third chair should have ‘our relationship’ written on it. Sit on the first chair and look at the ‘mum’ chair and tell her how you feel. Remember, ‘I’ statements are what you want to be saying. For example, I feel…..; when I clean the house and don’t get acknowledged, I feel…. When you have exhausted yourself, move onto the ‘mum’ chair and look at the ‘Me’ chair. This time, you are ‘mum’ and you are talking to the ‘your name’ chair. Tell ‘your name’ how you feel. Remember, you are MUM on this chair. Your job is to see things through her eyes. Exhaust yourself with ‘mum perceptions’ and when you do, move onto the third chair. The third chair is the one that is labelled ‘our relationship’. Sit in that chair and look at ‘mum’ and ‘your name’ and tell them both how you ‘the relationship’ feels. What do you need from the other two chairs/people. What are you struggling with? How can they work together. This is an exercise that will help you to better understand your perspective, mum’s perspective and the relationship’s perspective. Communicating how you feel with your mum is vital for a better relationship. Remember that parents are trying their best but they are human too. They make mistakes just like everyone else. The only difference is, they love you and they always have their children’s best interest at heart.
Fear of failure I can sense the heaviness just by reading your letter. Exams are a very challenging time for students. I want to start by normalising this feeling for you. The term ‘nobody’ makes it sound like you have put yourself in a space alone. Don’t do this to yourself. There are students all over the globe feeling just as you are right now. The pressure of exams can create a lot of stress but what I hope you can learn to do is relax knowing that you’re NOT alone. My concern for you is that you may be making the worry of failing larger than it really is. Ask yourself, ‘what evidence do I have that I will fail this exam’? Fear is an acronym for F(alse) E(vidence) that A(ppears) R(eal). Do you have any concrete evidence that you will fail?
Q. Lately I’ve been receiving exam after
exam at school, and I just can’t keep myself together. I am constantly nervous or anxious, leaving me in a terrible position for revising. Nobody seems to understand me because they all find tests and examinations ‘normal’. No matter how many I do, I will always be petrified. My anxiety and fear of failure is eating away at me and stopping me from reaching my full potential. If I keep this up, I’m afraid I’ll fail an exam.
Next, ask yourself the following questions…Are you studying? Are you keeping up with your homework? Are you reaching out to the teachers or your peers for help with difficult work? Do you understand the new concepts? Are you organised with schedules? If you answered ‘no’ to any of these questions, work on what you need to do next. If you answered ‘yes’ to all of those questions, the fear is not concrete. Finally, share your feelings with a parent or a teacher. They may be able to help you relax and they may even share strategies that they used when they were in your shoes as a student.
Family drama This letter is very close to my heart. The message I heard was that the pain of being together is tearing you apart. However, I also heard a disappointed dream of ‘will we ever be close’? There are two sides to this coin. The first is that things stay the same and everyone carries on behaving as they are now. The second is that someone starts the wheel of change in motion. I am guessing from your letter, that you may be called forth to be that person to start the change. For this, I applaud you. It is important to remember that although siblings are older, they still get triggered into the same rivalries they did when they were younger. Blame, defensiveness, contempt and walking out are all the toxins of behaviour that are commonly seen with siblings. Although these behaviours are common, they are not beneficial and quite frankly, they deter any positive relationships from thriving. I suggest that you sit down with yourself and have a good think about what your issues are. What are past hurt or frustrations that you are carrying into family gatherings? Unconsciously, we carry hurt and just seeing someone can trigger us to react to our siblings that will cause them to also react. Before we know it, another family drama has erupted. Once you’ve written up all the hurts and frustrations that you have, think about the hurts or frustrations that your siblings may have. What are they holding against you and each other? The next step is to then communicate with them. Although it is easier to email people, it is always more powerful to phone them and speak to them. I suggest that you phone them. Start the conversation with a lovely memory. Doing so will soften the space that you are both sharing. The last thing you want is to create a cold, defensive atmosphere. Once you’ve reminisced, share your hurt and frustration. Own your hurts and don’t use ‘blame’, ‘defensiveness’ or ‘contempt’ as the weapons of this conversation. Use ‘I’ statements and remind your sibling(s) that you care and want to get closer. Although is my dream that this tool is successful immediately, the reality is that change takes time. Imagine a baby learning to walk. It happens in stages. Repairing your relationships will also happen in stages. Breathe, feel and love are the keys to remember.
Q. I was recently with my siblings due
to the unexpected early passing of a family member. Although we are older, with our own separate lives, when we are ALL together, it feels like we’re kids with rampant sibling rivalry. There’s always conflict where 2 people aren’t speaking and it affects everyone in a negative way. Due to this reality, I don’t see my older siblings often, and when I do, they stay 3 days max. I try to avoid family drama, yet it seems my family serves up a healthy heaping often and regularly. When I’m with them, I act like a different person and I’m not happy. I don’t feel close to them, and I sometimes wish I did. Is there a middle road?

Motivation Post NYE There seems to be something magical about December 31, no matter what the year or where you live. That day has the power to inspire people all over the world to recommit themselves to their own lives and destinies. Bad habits are seen for what they are, benign habits are evaluated and redesigned, and new habits of a better self are on the cusp of the next morning. But New Year’s resolutions, no matter how well-intentioned, often find resistance and are put to the test in just a matter of weeks. Here are four ways that you can keep yourself motivated when the New Year high begins to fade.
SHARE Hopefully, you’ve already made a close friend aware of your personal goal. If not, you should. The research shows that accountability greatly affects a positive outcome. When you find yourself lacking motivation, call a friend. That is exactly why you enlisted a confidant in the first place—to support you when the road gets rough. Share with that person the struggles that you face and let your friend encourage you to keep going. That’s what friends are for, after all!
REMEMBER “Remember, remember the 31 of December”: When mid-February or early March roll around and you feel like the New Year vigor is nearly gone, take a moment to remind yourself of the things you committed to change. Think back on New Year’s Eve, when those good ideas seemed doable, and relive the moment. Sometimes just putting yourself back in that same place and remembering why you made those resolutions can help rejuvenate the desire and provide the motivation you need.
STAY POSITIVE It’s easy for resolutions to become personal slaps in the face when they are not achieved. But those negative thoughts about yourself and your ability to accomplish your goals do not profit you at all. No use getting down on yourself, as all that negative self-talk will only result in more negativity which stifles, suppresses and hurts you in the long run. Instead, choose to be positive about your progress, no matter how small or shaky it may be. Accept that life changes are difficult, that the difficulty is a natural part of the process and you are strong enough to overcome it. Whether your goal is becoming healthy, to get rid of a bad habit, to do well at your studies, advance in your career or to forgive that particularly difficult person, keep at it with a positive attitude and it will get easier.
CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESS It is important to track your progress and celebrate your success, even if you have not yet arrived at the finish line. Acknowledging and celebrating the small steps that you have made is like turning up the volume of your inner cheerleader. It reminds your brain that you can do it, you are able to master your life and you can reach your goals. Whatever the step and however small, acknowledge it in some way and pat yourself on the back. Then keep going! by
nick hill
The decisions you made to make your life better are worth whatever struggles you face in the process of reaching those goals. Don’t give up now. Live with the mindset that any day can be embraced as a new day to invoke positive change in your life. Keep at it and become one of those individuals who live the life of their dreams.

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.” The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, asks, “Which do you want, son?”The boy takes the quarters and leaves. “What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!” Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?” The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!”
Two hunters are in the woods, when one of them suddenly collapses. He wasn’t breathing, and his eyes looked glazed. Thinking quickly, the other guy grabs his cell phone and calls for help. He shouts at the emergency operator, “I think my friend is dead! What do I do!?”

DERANGED
A turtle was walking down an alley in New York when he was mugged by a gang of snails. A police detective came to investigate and asked the turtle if he could explain what happened.
A general noticed one of his soldiers behaving oddly. The soldier would pick up any piece of paper he found, frown and say: “That’s not it” and put it down again. This went on for some time, until the general arranged to have the soldier psychologically tested. The psychologist concluded that the soldier was deranged, and wrote out his discharge from the army. The soldier picked it up, smiled and said: “That’s it.”
“Calm down”, the operator says in a soothing voice, “I can help you. But first, we need to make sure he’s dead.” The phone goes silent for a second, then the operator hears a gunshot; “Ok”, says the hunter, “now what?”
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go on a camping trip. After a good dinner they pitch their tent and go to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes wakes up and nudges his faithful friend. “Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.” “I see thousands and thousands of stars, Holmes,” replies Watson. “And what do you deduce from that?” After thinking for a moment, Watson replies: “Well, astronomically, it tells me that as there are billions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets, others may now be looking at their sky. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Metaphysically, I can see that we are a small and insignificant part of the universe. What does it tell you, Holmes?” Holmes is silent for a moment. “Watson, you idiot!” he says. “I deduce someone has stolen our tent!”
The turtle looked at the detective with a confused look on his face and replied “I don’t know, it all happened so fast.”
