Car Less: Stress Less

Keeping our city moving

THE POTENTIAL PLEASURE OF OUR EVERYDAY JOURNEYS IS OFTEN LOST IN THE RUSH TO REACH OUR DESTINATION BY CAR. EMBRACING THE ALTERNATIVES CAN BE EASIER THAN YOU THINK. Travel: Getting from A-to-B. Whether for work or pleasure, we spend our lives making all manner of journeys. Some of us walk everywhere come rain or shine, others opt for York’s cycle lanes and picturesque off-road routes on our bikes, whilst many still OZIJ \PM KIZ SMa[ I\ \PM ÅZ[\ [QOV WN LIZS KTW]L[ WV heading out the front door. Many of our travel choices are dependent on the time of day, the weather, where we are heading and whether we are running late. Out of habit, the car can often appear the only or perhaps the quickest option, however on short journeys this is rarely the case. Trips into the city on foot or on two-wheels give you the freedom to do as you please long into the night, without having to worry about parking charges. What’s more, if you’re heading in for a spot of shopping it also gives you the option to reward yourself with a few guilt-free drinks. Bit by bit, whether

We can all do our bit to keep York moving by making small changes to how we travel around the city. Rothko’s aims, as well as his techniques, differed from those of Albers. For Rothko, colour became merely “an instrument to express basic human emotions of “tragedy, ecstasy and doom. He wanted people to have the same spiritual experience as he had when painting them, saying, “If you are moved only by their colour relationship, then you miss the point. As his health and his personal life disintegrated, he became increasingly concerned with ‘the transcendent’. By 1958 his palette had grown increasingly dark. The mood is strongly sombre and meditative and, to many, deeply moving.... The invigorating colour we all need at this time of year, is there to cheer you in several art galleries in York. FORAGER'S GUIDE

ONEANDOTHER.COM

Gathering Goodness After The Thaw LET'S LOOK AHEAD TO THE COMING OF SPRING, WITH OUR FORAGER'S PICKS FROM NATURE'S YEARLY BOUNTY. In the depths of winter, foraged goodies are hard to come by – and let’s face it, it takes a real diePIZL \W LZIO \PMU[MT^M[ I_Ia NZWU \PMQZ +PZQ[\UI[ pudding and go wandering around in the cold and damp in search of yet more food. Instead it’s nicer to stay inside, in the warm, and look ahead to the promise of delights to come – after all, it’s only six or so weeks before crow garTQK _QTT [\IZ\ ÆW_MZQVO PMZITLQVO \PM arrival of its delicious relative wild garlic a few weeks after that. Sorrel, too, will spring into life in 5IZKP IVL JWZIOM _QTT J]Z[\ QV\W Q\[ JT]M ÆW_MZML glory not long thereafter. By then spring will be in full swing, and as May gives way to June Good King Henry and Fat Hen will both put in appearances.

)[ MIZTa []UUMZ IZZQ^M[ PMZITLML Ja MTLMZÆW_MZ[ it’s time to make champagne again, and if that fails (again) then a few weeks later one can try one’s hand at wild strawberry, wild raspberry or wild cherry vodka. Later still, drupes like sloes and damsons will hopefully yield a better harvest than they did in 2012 – but if they fail us again then there’s always \PM \ZILQ\QWVIT -VOTQ[P [\IXTM[ WN hawthorn and rowan, dandelion and horseradish to fall back on. So, stay in the warm, make a mental note to clear some space in the freezer to make the most of the good times when nature will once again provide her bounty, and rest assured that those times aren’t far away.
