Things and events in the daily lif e inspire me to my brooches. A portrait with my grandparents, the boats in X ochimilco or a song fr om Malvina Reynolds. I tr y to reduce the content into geometric shapes. The material I use is mainly st eel. It has diff erent properties and qualities which suiting perfect to the results I’m looking for. Los objetos y los ac ontecimientos del día a día me inspir an a la hor a de crear mis broches, como un retrato con mis abuelos, las barcas en Xochimilco o una canción de Malvina Reynolds. Trato de encajar el contenido en formas geométricas y el material que utilizo suele ser acero, ya que tiene distintas propiedades y cualidades que se adecuan perfectamente a los resultados que busco.

Herbs or herbal medicine with its secretive, mythical but also healing aspect is inspiring Nora Rochels work with the title Herbalism. L ooking deeper into the subject of plants, the leitmotif of her w ork, fascinated by supersticions surr ounding the traditional f olk medicine, with its r oots at the v ery beginning of human hist ory or even before as also animals are medicating themselves with special herbs . The work is relating to the past and the futur e with use of futuristic f orms casted in aluminium and the c onciousness that there are still undiscoverd plants which may be holding new cures for illnesses. It is exploring the w orld of flo wers and plants , the mir acle of life with its cycle of growth, bloom and decay. Las hierbas o la medicina de hierbas , con su r asgo oculto y mític o pero también cur ativo, inspiró el título de la obr a de Nor a Rochels, Herbalism (Herbalismo). P rofundizando en el tema de las plantas, el tema principal de su trabajo, quedó fascinada por las supersticiones que rodean a la medicina folclórica tradicional, cuyas raíces se remontan a los inicios de la historia humana o incluso antes, ya que también los animales se medican con hierbas especiales. El trabajo está relacionado con el pasado y el futuro, con el uso de formas futurísticas fundidas en aluminio y la c onciencia de que aún hay plantas por descubrir que podrían ofrecer nuevas curas para enfermedades. Se explora el mundo de las flores y las plantas, el milagro de la vida con su ciclo de crecimiento, floración y descomposición.

Over the y ears, I ha ve been int erested in c onceptual and mat erial content of w earable art. This search has made me explor e the diff erence between apparel and jew elry and has made me r e-think what r oles and implication body adornment pla ys in contemporary society. I am dr awn to the history of wearable art, the power and meaning objects have over a wearer, and how body adornment transcends over time. My Puerto Rican backg round influenc ed m y fascination f or marine lif e and m y Spanish heritage br ought l ife to “Armada”. “Armada” or “armed” is inspir ed by the armor ed metalwork worn by Spanish c onquistadores who took over the island while enslaving women. With these feminine copper breastplates, I aim to give women a sense of empowerment and protection unlike colonial times. Con el paso de los años , me he ido inter esando por el c ontenido conceptual y material del ar te para vestir. Esta búsqueda me ha llev ado a explorar la difer encia entre la r opa y la jo yería y me ha hecho pensar qué papeles e implicación tienen los adornos c orporales en la sociedad c ontemporánea. Me siento atr aído por la historia del arte para vestir, el poder y el significado que los objetos tienen sobre el que los lleva y cómo los adornos corporales transcienden con el tiempo. Mis orígenes puertorriqueños han influenciado mi fascinación por la vida marina y mi herencia española ha hecho realidad «Armada». «Armada» está inspirada en el trabajo de metales armados que trajeron los c onquistadores españoles que ocupar on la isla mientr as esclavizaban a las m ujeres. Con estos petos de cobre femeninos, voy a proporcionar a las m ujeres una sensación de poderío y pr otección distinta a la de la época colonial.

Physical world is tr ansient, and it is g rasped as t emporal world in Buddhism. S omething fragile enables me to realize this real world again. By the way, I have had such experience that by a loss of something important, its original image comes to keep close to my mind. It would be nothing else but that I obtain something permanent b y losing. Something fragile causes me t o have a yearning f or permanenc y. Bir th (or being aliv e) is g rasped as t emporal w orld in c ontrast with death as permanent world in Buddhism, and they are not taken up as two different things, but as one and same thing like the fr ont and back of a c oin. I wish myself that something fragile would be func tioning as a devic e in ar twork to enable me t o overlook both w orlds simultaneously. I often use paper , which I find in m y surr oundings as a no vel, a magazine or a catalog , f or m y jewelry work. I glue one side of a block c onsisting of a layer of paper, and cut out a certain shape from the block, and turn on the axis of glued side. The process results in a concentric form consisting of accumulated paper. El mundo físico es pasajero y, en el budismo, se considera un mundo temporal. La fragilidad me permite percatarme de nuevo de este m undo real. Por cierto, lo he experimentado y , al perder algo importante, la imagen original se aferra en mi mente. No se trata solo de que he obtenido algo permanente mediante su pérdida. Lo frágil me produce un anhelo por lo permanente. En el budismo, nacer (o estar vivo) se considera parte del mundo temporal mientras que la muerte pertenece al mundo permanente y no se consideran dos cosas distintas, sino una sola, como si fueran las dos caras de una moneda. Desearía que lo frágil funcionase como un aparato en una obra de arte para que me permitiese mirar ambos mundos a la vez. Para crear mis joyas, a menudo empleo papel que encuentro a mi alrededor, ya sea de libros, de una revista o de un catálogo. Pego un lado de un bloque formado por una capa de papel, lo c orto dándole una forma c oncreta y abr o el eje de la par te pegada. El pr oceso tiene c omo resultado una forma concéntrica compuesta de una acumulación de papeles.
