This late xix Century building is a splendid example of architecture built

by Brazilians on returning to their homeland after emigrating to Portugal, full of ideas from the new continent and rich with the funds to build them. A hundred and twenty years on, a thousand bad interventions had ruined the house. The task of the architects was to rescue it.

Esta construcción de finales del xix es un espléndido ejemplo de la arquitectura que trajeron los brasileños cuando, habiendo emigrado de Portugal, regresaron a la tierra patria con ideas del nuevo continente y riqueza para erigirlas. Ciento veinte años después, un millar de malas intervenciones habían hecho degenerar la casa. La tarea de los arquitectos: rescatarla de sí misma.

«Strict restoration is not enough», continues do Vale. «We need to give something up: the building must suit modern life. This is what keeps it alive. » «La restauración estricta no es suficiente», sigue Do Vale. «Hay que ceder en algo: el edificio debe satisfacer la forma de vivir actual. Eso lo mantiene vivo.»

The design of this house was entrusted to Jürgen Mayer, recently declared a quasi futuristic architect thanks to his works such as the enormous Metropol Parasol, which opened in 2011 in Seville (Spain).

The house, built for four, reflects its designer’s obsessions: the desire to merge sculpture and architecture. And an immense love of technology.

El diseño de esta casa corrió a cargo de Jürgen Mayer, recientemente consagrado como arquitecto cuasi futurista gracias a obras como la enorme Metropol Parasol, que se inauguró en el 2011 en la ciudad de Sevilla (España). La casa, una residencia para cuatro personas, refleja las obsesiones del autor: el afán de fundir escultura y arquitectura. Y un amor inmenso por la tecnología.

The central staircase is the most sculptural element of the house: modelled to connect the building’s three levels, it perfects the image of a single, sculpted form.

La escalera central es el elemento más escultórico de la casa: modelada para conectar los tres niveles del edificio, perfecciona la imagen de un todo esculpido.
