El campus de la General Mills Corporate fue diseñado originalmente por Skidmore Owings and Merrill en 1950 a partir de un esquema arquitectónico moderno yuxtapuesto a un paisaje agreste. Con la adquisición de una nueva corporación, el campus debía ser ampliado sustancialmente para poder dar cabida a los nuevos empleados. La formas arquitectónicas destinadas a albergar la nueva entidad debían complementar el antiguo edificio y al mismo tiempo enmarcar el nuevo espacio abierto que se extendía frente a él. La idea inicial para el diseño del espacio abierto que rodea la construcción era crear la sensación de que los nuevos edificios flotan en el paisaje, justo por encima de un plano inmóvil de agua. La vegetación que se extiende a ambos lados del edificio refuerza la composición geométrica del espacio y establece un vínculo entre lo construido y lo natural.

El espejo de agua, las plataformas adyacentes y las suaves colinas cubiertas de césped son el marco ideal para colocar una serie de esculturas a gran escala que se dispersan por el espacio abierto.

The General Mills Corporate campus was originally designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill back in 1950 from a modern architectonic scheme juxtaposed with the rural landscape. By acquiring a new corporation, the campus had to be substantially enlarged in order to make room for the new employees. The architectonic forms intended to house the new entity had to complement the older building but at the same time mark out a new space that extended out in front.

The initial design idea for the open space surrounding the new building was to help create the sensation that the edifice floated over the landscape, just above a motionless plane of water. The green areas extending on both sides of the building reinforce the geometrical composition of the space and establish a link between what was built and the natural area. The mirror effect of the water, the adjacent platforms, and soft grass-covered hills make an ideal setting for the installation of a series of large-scale sculptures dispersed throughout the open space. The public toilets have been retained, disguising them with a metal structure. Gigantic bamboo boxes enclose quieter areas which at night become lamps illuminating the space.

The mirror effect of the water highlights the architectonic shapes of the building, creating a transitory space between it and nature, and also making boundaries for lingering the various outdoor areas.

El espejo de agua realza las formas arquitect贸nicas del edificio, crea un espacio transitorio entre 茅ste y la naturaleza y delimita las diferentes zonas de estar situadas al aire libre.

Esta original plaza se encuentra en una estrecha parcela de 4.000 m2 situada en el distrito de Luohu, en la ciudad china de Shenzen. El diseño del proyecto debía tener en cuenta los lavabos públicos ubicados en el centro de la plaza, y que debían mantenerse, así como el canal cubierto que discurría bajo la plaza. La vista desde el edificio Diwang —la construcción más alta de la ciudad— inspiró a los arquitectos en la realización del diseño, ya que al observar desde ese lugar tan alto el continuo flujo de tráfico y de personas en esa zona quisieron reflejar el dinamismo de la ciudad en las formas de la plaza. Según los arquitectos, su intención era crear un ambiente de imágenes superpuestas y cortantes, un paisaje cambiante que evocara el curso de un río. Las curvas establecen un diálogo con las construcciones circundantes y se convierten en una sucesión de caminos ondulantes que contrastan con los ángulos rectos de los edificios que rodean la parcela.

Urbanus Architecture & Design

This original square, located on a narrow parcel measuring just 4000 m2, is found in the Luohu district of the Chinese city of Shenzen. The project's design had to take into account the public toilets set in the centre of the square which had to be retained, as well as the covered canal running below the square. The view from the Diwang tower —the city's tallest building— inspired the architects to make their design. Seeing the continual flow of traffic and people in this area from such heights made them want to reflect the bustling city in the forms of the square. According to the architects, their intention was to create an atmosphere of sharp, superimposed images that resulted in a changeable landscape evoking the course of a river.

The curves establish a dialogue with the neighbouring buildings and become a succession of undulating paths that contrast with the right angles of the structures surrounding the parcel.
