La realización de proyectos de arquitectura hechos en parte o en su totalidad con contenedores de carga reciclados, es cada vez más común, y unido a la necesidad de una construcción más sostenible, también es cada vez más necesario.

Partiendo de la base de que con contenedores podemos realizar cualquier tipo de edificio, hemos dividido este libro en dos capítulos: Equipamientos para uso público y Viviendas unifamiliares. En estas dos subcategorías, mostramos una selección de las últimas creaciones de estudios de arquitectura de todo el mundo.

The making of architectural projects made partly or totally from recycled freight containers is getting more and more common, and added to this, the need for a more sustainable construction is also becoming increasingly necessary.

Building on the basic concept that with containers we can create any type of building, we have divided this book in two chapters: Equipments for public use and single family homes. Within these two categories, we show a selection of the last creations of architecture studios from all over the world.

The work presented is basically an assembly of pieces, pieces absolutely known and standardised, sea containers, wooden boards, as well as profiles and sheets of standard steel. Therefore, we are talking about a manufacturing rather than about a construction process, which has no hidden stages. The architectonic and construction operations are reduced to minimum expression, on one hand to reduce costs and on the order to diminish the construction time. An example could be, to use micro-undulated iron sheets of a low thickness, of the metallic curtain type, for the exterior lining since on one hand they present a greater resistance than a plain sheet of the same thickness, something that allows to reduce to the maximum the amount of supports needed to hold it and eventually it generates a ventilated façade in a natural way, only by separating the sheet from the support that finishes it off.

La obra presentada, es básicamente un armado de piezas, piezas absolutamente conocidas y estandarizadas, contenedores marítimos, tableros de madera, además de perfiles y planchas de acero standar. Se trata entonces de un proceso más de fabricación que de construcción, que no tiene etapas veladas. Las operaciones arquitectónicas y constructivas son reducidas al colmo de lo mínimo, por una parte para reducir el costo y por otra disminuir el tiempo de construcción. Un ejemplo es utilizar planchas de fierro microonduladas de bajo espesor, tipo cortina metálica, para los revestimientos exteriores ya que por un lado poseen una mayor resistencia a una plancha lisa de igual espesor lo que posibilita reducir al máximo la cantidad de apoyos para soportarla y finalmente genera de manera natural una fachada ventilada solamente distanciando la plancha del soporte que la remata.

The project and construction was carried out in only 2.5 months. The architectonic approach has as its end to match the pieces and the space once the construction has ended, or the assembling process, more precisely. Afterwards the container is not seen in its unequivocal sea freight light, but as a habitable space, now with an interior that presents itself as generous and with variations of light and height, and which allows to be inhabited in an ample manner.

El proyecto y la construcción fue llevado a cabo en sólo 2,5 meses. El planteamiento arquitectónico tiene como fin que las piezas y el espacio se hermanen una vez terminada la construcción, o mejor dicho el proceso de montaje. Luego el contenedor ya no se ve en su medida unívoca de carga marítima, sino, como espacio habitable, ahora en un interior que se presenta generoso y con variaciones, de luz y altura, y que permite ser habitado de forma holgada.

“La Casa Container” intends to be a resting shelter away from the centre, characterised by the environmental quality of its immediate surroundings. The versatility of its spaces walks alongside the contemporary changes in the ways of life and family composition.

This work is the result of a search for technical, aesthetical and functional innovation. Its morphology is composed by two metallic boxes arranged on an L-shape which structure the ground floor, holding all the services (entrance, kitchen and larder on one container; laundry room, bathroom, rooster, workshop and store on the other). The gap between both boxes is where the public life takes place: barbecue and dinning spaces. Over them, on the top floor, the unifying element of the set is located: a great solid volume of traditional construction that gravitates over the containers, holding inside the bathroom and bedrooms private area.

“La Casa Container”, pretende ser un reducto de descanso alejado del centro, caracterizado por la calidad ambiental de su contexto inmediato. La versatilidad de sus espacios acompaña los cambios en los modos de vida y composición familiar contemporáneos.

Esta obra es el resultado de una búsqueda de innovación técnica, estética y funcional. Su morfología se compone de dos cajas metálicas dispuestas en “L”, que estructuran la planta baja conteniendo todos los servicios (ingreso, cocina y despensa en un contenedor. Lavadero, baño, asador, taller y depósito en otro). El vacío entre ambas cajas, es donde se desarrolla la vida pública: quincho cochera y estar comedor.

Sobre ellos, en planta alta, se sitúa el elemento unificador del conjunto: un gran volumen macizo de construcción tradicional que gravita sobre los contenedores, cobijando en su interior el área privada de dormitorios y baño.

3. El material extraído es usado para el portón de los garajes y para espacio de almacenamiento.

Outside, the house is closed through a blind facade to preserve privacy and to act as a shield against the most pernicious orientations (South and West). The openings located towards the street were made using steel sheet extracted from the cuts made on the containers; the access door is the best example. Towards the interior, its environment sincerely opens up to the greenery of the patio, enjoying the best orientations of these latitudes (North and East), benefiting to the maximum from the natural light and ventilation during the whole day. Here, the openings are made on high performance aluminium with airtight double glassing for a correct habitability.

Al exterior, la vivienda se cierra mediante una fachada ciega para preservar la privacidad y protegerse de las orientaciones más perniciosas (Sur y Oeste). Las aberturas ubicadas hacia la calle se realizaron utilizando la chapa de acero extraída de las caladuras en los contenedores, la puerta de acceso es el mejor ejemplo. Al interior, sus ambientes se abren francamente al verde del patio, disfrutando de las mejores orientaciones para estas latitudes (norte y este), aprovechando al máximo la iluminación y ventilación natural durante todo el día. Aquí, las aberturas son de aluminio de alta prestación con doble vidriado hermético para una correcta habitabilidad.

The project is characterised by the fact that it answers three basic premises: technological innovation, construction speed and material simplification. The sea containers came as an answer to the house original design that intended to use new elements initially conceived for another function, recycling them to face a new challenge. Its interiors are insulated with polyurethane foam that was painted on latex on the ceilings, leaving it exposed, and in vertical enclosures was covered with gypsum rock panels, hiding the installations.

El proyecto se caracteriza por responder a tres premisas básicas: innovación tecnológica, rapidez constructiva y simplificación de materiales. Los contenedores marítimos surgieron como respuesta al diseño original de la casa, que buscó utilizar elementos concebidos en un principio para otra función, reciclándolos para afrontar un nuevo desafío. Sus interiores se encuentran acondicionados con espuma de poliuretano, que en cielorrasos se pintó con látex, dejándola vista y en cerramientos verticales fue revestida con paneles de roca de yeso, ocultando instalaciones.
