El ayuntamiento de La Haya encargó a Carve el diseño de “dos instalaciones de juegos infantiles integradas” adecuadas para niños con y sin discapacidades. El objetivo era diseñar un parque infantil en el que se eliminaran las diferencias en el juego de niños con discapacidades y niños sin discapacidades, que ofrezca desafíos y reclamos para todos. Para Carve, “jugar juntos” no significa jugar uno al lado del otro. Ambos parques están diseñados pensando en las habilidades de los niños con discapacidades, no en sus limitaciones.

Cualquier niño quiere explorar sus posibilidades al máximo, por eso el parque no muestra directamente que se han tenido en cuenta las posibles limitaciones (visuales, auditivas, físicas y mentales). Ofrecen retos cada vez mayores para todos los niños favoreciendo el juego sin limitaciones.

Carve was asked by the municipality of the Hague to design two 'integrated play facilities', playgrounds suitable for children with and without disabilities.

How does one design a playground where the difference in play between children with and without disabilities is eliminated? A playground that offers challenges and appeals to children with and without disabilities? In Carve's vision 'playing together' doesn't mean playing next to each other. Both playgrounds are designed with the capacities of children with a disability in mind, and not their limitations. Every child wants to explore its possibilities and wants to be able to extend its boundaries. Importantly, the playgrounds do not directly show that possible limitations (visual, auditory, physical and mental) have been taken into account. They offer increasing challenges for all children and thereby contribute to play without limitations.

With a completely authentic language of form and choice of colour they stimulate curiosity and allow children to discover the extensive playing facilities by and with each other.

This new playground is located on an existing lawn and shaped as a folded red blanket with a strong graphic character. By constructing creases between a ramp, several angles are created. The undefined possibilities of the field challenges the boundaries of both (partially)disabled and non-disabled children.

Intersecting routes allow children with different abilities to meet and help each other. In the playingfield, different climbing grips and tactile elements have been added, as well as a moving rubber mat.

Whisper tubes, a wide slide, a 'concave' turntable and a hammock create additional play elements.

El lenguaje de las formas y la elección del color estimulan la curiosidad y permiten que los niños descubran las amplias instalaciones de juego junto con los otros niños.

Este nuevo parque infantil está situado en un área verde existente y tiene la forma de una manta roja plegada con una fuerte personalidad gráfica. Al construir pliegues entre una rampa, se crean varios ángulos. Las posibilidades no definidas del terreno desafían los límites tanto de los niños parcialmente discapacitados como de los que no lo están. La intersección de diferentes caminos permite que los niños con distintas habilidades se encuentren y se ayuden entre ellos. En la zona de juego, se han añadido distintos agarres de escalada y elementos táctiles, así como una alfombra de goma en movimiento. Tubos de susurro, un tobogán ancho, un disco giratorio cóncavo y una hamaca crean elementos de juego adicionales.

El equipo del proyecto Homo Ludens hizo el encargo al arquitecto y buscó algo que llamara la atención arquitectónicamente, que funcionara como un hito entre la gran variedad de objetos para jugar que hay en el Aquazoo. El proyecto Homo Ludens, o el hombre que juega, tuvo lugar en el año 2010 en el zoo Aquazoo, situado cerca de la ciudad de Leeuwarden. El concepto del diseño, la casita del árbol, es el resultado de una opción de juegos existente: trepar por los árboles. El punto de partida del diseño era que el parque infantil no tenía que perjudicar el valor del paisaje. Se decidió evitar las grandes excavaciones para los cimientos con el fin de conservar la gran variedad de plantas. La simplicidad y la inversión han sido los puntos de partida del proceso de diseño. No es la casa en el árbol sino el árbol en la casa.

Commissioned by the projectteam Homo Ludens, I have searched for an architectonic eye-catcher, which would work as a landmark amongst the big variation of playing objects at the Aquazoo. The project Homo Ludens, the playing person, took place in the year of 2010 at a zoo called Aquazoo, located near the city of Leeuwarden. The concept of the design, the treehouse, is a result of an already existing playing possibility; climbing in trees. The starting point of the design was that the playground should not spoil the value of the landscape: The decision was made to prevent large excavations for foundations in order to preserve the rich variation in plantation. Simplicity and reversal have been the starting points of the design process. Not the house in the tree but the tree in the house.

Concept.

Concepto.

The basis is a flat graphical tree, which refers to the existing trees in the area. The house, which will be experienced more like a tower because of its proportions, brings the visitor safely to the top of the tree. The branches of the tree invite the visitor to climb and to search for his own shelter/nest. The holes in the tower’s walls have the shape of treeleaves and take care of a large variation of views. Finally, the branches found on the outside of the tower can serve as a resting place for the birds in the zoo. That’s how a tree without roots can be rooted in its natural environment.

La base es un árbol gráfico plano, que hace referencia a los árboles que hay en la zona. La casa, que se verá más como una torre debido a sus proporciones, lleva al visitante de modo seguro hasta la parte de arriba del árbol. Las ramas del árbol invitan al visitante a trepar y buscar su propio cobijo/nido. Los orificios en las paredes de la torre tienen la forma de hojas de árbol y ofrecen una gran variedad de vistas. Finalmente, las ramas que se encuentran en la parte exterior de la torre pueden servir de lugar de descanso para los pájaros del zoo.

De este modo, se puede arraigar un árbol sin raíces en su entorno natural.

Norwood Park es uno de los puntos más altos de Lambeth y ofrece unas vistas espléndidas del sur de Londres. La nueva zona de juegos acuática es una extensión de un equipamiento existente situado en la parte de arriba de la colina. El encargo del cliente era crear una zona de juegos natural que permitiera jugar con agua y arena y estuviera especialmente dirigida a niños con necesidades especiales y sus familias/cuidadores.

El diseño de dos montículos de pendientes suaves unidos por un puente de madera exagera la topografía existente de la cumbre. Los montículos abrazan un valle parcialmente llenado de arena de forma generosa y lo protegen de los vientos. Las estructuras de juego, instalaciones de escalada y elementos de agua y arena especialmente diseñados se han integrado a este paisaje para proporcionar una oferta de juego de varios niveles con un alto grado de complejidad.

Norwood Park is one of the highest points in Lambeth and offers sweeping views over South London. The new water play area is an extension to an existing equipment based playground located on the top of the hill. The clients’ brief was to create a natural play landscape offering water and sand play and specifically targeting children with special needs and their families/ carers.

The design of two gently sloping mounds linked with a timber bridge exaggerates the existing hilltop topography. The mounds embrace a generous partly sand-filled sculpted valley and shelter it from the prevailing winds. Purpose designed play structures, climbing features and sand and water play elements are embedded in this landscape to provide a multi level play offer with a higher degree of complexity.

Water pumps at the top of the mounds allow children to create a flow of water and channel it down the boulder mound and a sloping, cascading structure made out of CNC-milled timber basins.

Using sand cranes and an Archimedes screw children can then transport the water and sand back to the top. Excess water is collected in shallow channels running through the sand valley allowing splashing, bridge and dam building and from there feed into the planned wetlands at the foot of the hill.

Mediante el uso de unas grúas de arena y un tornillo de Arquímedes, los niños pueden transportar el agua y arena de nuevo hasta la parte de arriba. El exceso de agua se recoge en unos canales poco profundos que pasan por el valle de arena y permiten salpicar, construir puentes y diques, y desde ahí, se conduce hasta las ciénagas que hay al pie de la colina.

The high point and visual focal point of the play area is the play tower, which offers bird’s nest views from an outlook platform at high level. Water is contained in a water storage barrel near the top.

The first level of the play structure is accessible from the mound and offers climbing, sliding and water play activities and musical instruments.

Playing with mud, transporting, shaping and building with sand and water are basic needs, which bring together all age groups, providing interest even for adults. The water and sand play offers children the opportunity to engage in ‘proper’ work and has some of the appeal of a real building site encouraging creative and co-operative play by enabling children to work together and engage in self-initiated ‘projects’ and games.

El punto más alto y con mejores vistas de la zona de juegos es la torre, que ofrece unas vistas espléndidas desde una plataforma panorámica a un nivel elevado. El agua se guarda en un depósito cerca de la cima. Al primer nivel de la estructura de juegos se accede desde el montículo y ofrece juegos de escalada, deslizamiento, juegos con agua e instrumentos musicales. Jugar con barro, transportarlo, darle forma y construir con arena y agua son necesidades básicas que agrupan a todos los grupos de edades, ya que atraen incluso a los adultos. Los juegos con agua y arena ofrecen a los niños la posibilidad de realizar un trabajo y tienen algunos de los atractivos de una obra de verdad. Favorecen el juego creativo y cooperativo, ya que permite a los niños trabajar juntos y realizar juegos y “proyectos” iniciados por ellos mismos.
