How to Choose the Perfect Venue Simple steps to finding and perfecting your ideal place to celebrate. So you’re newly engaged, keen to find the perfect place, set a date and get the wedding planning properly underway. While it might be tempting to leap in, start visiting venues and just book somewhere to get it sorted, it’s worth taking a little time first to consider a few key factors. Before visiting venues, it’s important to have decided your priorities, and what kind of wedding you both have in mind, in order that you can agree on the perfect place.
The venue is going to be the most important factor in making your dream a reality, and once booked, the amenities, décor and atmosphere of the venue will form the basis of the style of wedding you’re going to have. So choosing the venue is something you should take time over and consider carefully. To help you, we’ve put together some tips and things to consider before making that all-important choice.
14 | One Fab Day
Decide your Priorities Before starting your venue search, the two first things to do are a) set your budget and b) your number of guests. These two numbers are going to be incredibly important in finding the right location, but they’re not the only factors. It’s really essential to consider your priorities – both your priorities – be it food, quality or quantity of accommodation, activities, location, view, amenities, proximity to home or transport, style of rooms, exclusivity, or just a particular vibe that you are looking for. These are the things to bear in mind when the eventual compromise comes, or when comparing one venue with another.
Decide a Look & Feel Once you’ve thoroughly discussed what’s important to you both and what you would like to include in terms of décor or ideas, a feeling for what kind of celebration you would like should be forming: boho festival or summer garden party, rustic bbq-style or five star foodie heaven. Having an idea of the ‘look and feel’ you’re going for, really makes the venue search much easier – you’re looking for the venue that suits your style of celebration. This clarity makes will whittle your list of possible venues down to a manageable shortlist.

16 | One Fab Day
Consider the Season When choosing a wedding venue, it’s a good idea to take account of the time of year you’re considering for your celebration, because you want to make the most of your venue’s natural unique charms. Beautiful gardens will be a joy for guests to wander around at a summer wedding, but won’t look their best in November. Likewise, magnificent reception rooms with warm and cosy fireplaces would be wasted in June, but will be wonderful at a winter wedding.
Make it Personal The very best weddings are not those with the biggest budgets or most extravagant entertainments, they’re the ones guests remember because they were the most personal, and reflected the personalities of the couple. The truly personal celebrations feel like the greatest party that couple could ever have. They’re the ones that people go home saying “that was so… Karen and Dave”. In order to achieve this personal feeling, it’s essential to have a sit down and chat about what you are both interested in and passionate about, and how you could incorporate those elements into the wedding.
Be Prepared to Compromise Remember, compromise is key – it’s unlikely any one venue will be absolutely perfectly on brief, but recognizing your priorities before starting your search, will make the final decision so much easier.

The city sister of the Cliff House Hotel in Waterford, the Townhouse maintains the standards of gastronomic delight set by the hotel, but overlooking St. Stephen’s Green it has a more urban edge – a very stylish choice.
If fine dining and refined elegance are your idea of the perfect wedding celebration, then look no further than Locks Brasserie nestled in a quiet spot along the Grand Canal in Dublin’s south suburbs.
We Loved: The décor is the last word in contemporary classic – a fusion of Irish style and international chic.
We Loved: A meander along the canal is a lovely jaunt on a fine day, perfect for some subtle city wedding snaps.

HOME They say "there’s no place like home" and there’s definitely nothing quite like a wedding at home. Not the cheapest option by a long shot - trust me - but if you have the space, the inclination, and lots of energy, then a wedding at home is a way to celebrate without parallel. We loved: The absolute freedom to do what you like, when you like, how you like it. The sense of connection – not just making memories, but adding to a lifetime of memories.
