Street Collectors coming into businesses

A few charity collectors have been in Onehunga recently going from business to business. This can be an annoying interruption, as some members have reported. If you do not wish to talk to these people, just ask them to leave your premises. Legitimate charities generally ensure that their collectors have a badge at the very least, and often a uniform. They should respond quickly and politely to your request to leave. If you have any trouble with collectors, please call Satia Sami, our Security Guard for assistance. Legitimate charities would want to hear any complaints you may have about individual collectors. Please contact the OBA on 636 8535 if you have complaints and we will pass these on for you.

OBA’s newsletter, website and Facebook editor, Debbie Harkness, (that’s me) leaves 212a Onehunga Mall today after 15 months in beautiful downtown Onehunga. Coming from my previous job as manager of Parnell’s business association, I’ve really loved working at the OBA with town centre manager, Amanda Kinzett, eagle-eye security guard Satia and, more recently, Briar Millar on events. Onehunga has a great heart with its busy town centre, and a great feel to it with the community’s very active organisations all working together to make Onehunga a great place to live and work in. I’ve taken a job covering communications and marketing for Parnell Trust, which runs Parnell’s community centre. After my work here, I shall be very well equipped! It’s been wonderful spending time with you in Onehunga. All the very best. Debbie

Bargain hunting: offer something extra for FREE Consumers see this as better than a discount
School Holidays start next week!
Discounts may not be the best option when marketing a product; offering something extra free may work much better. A new study, led by Akshay Rao of University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management, on consumers' attitudes to discounting revealed that most people are useless at fractions and so they much prefer getting something extra for free to getting something cheaper.

For example, most consumers don’t see that a 50% increase in quantity is the same as a 33% discount in price. They overwhelmingly assume the former is better value. In an experiment, the researchers sold 73% more hand lotion when it was offered in a bonus pack than when it carried an equivalent discount (even after all other effects, such as a desire to stockpile, were controlled for). In another experiment, the researchers offered undergraduates two deals on loose coffee beans: 33% extra free or 33% off the price. The discount is by far the better proposition, but the supposedly clever students viewed them as equivalent. Marketing blogger, Peep Laja, has collected results from a number of interesting pricing experiments here: http://conversionxl.com/pricing-experiments-you-might-not-know-but-can-learnfrom. As he says, people are weird and irrational, and there’s much we don’t understand. Like why do shoppers moving in a counterclockwise direction spend on average $2.00 more at the supermarket? Why does removing dollar signs from prices (24 instead of $24) increase sales? What will work for you depends on your industry, product and customer but some of these results might work for you, so why not give it a try?
