Less Than A Month Till The Onehunga Santa Parade!

Saturday November 30 from 11.30am to 2pm

Onehunga’s Santa Parade and Party brings a raft of people from local and outside communities into the town centre. Have you thought of how you will entice people into your business on the day of the Santa Parade? How will you decorate your shop window? How will your staff be dressed? What promotions could you do to draw people in? These are all things to think about and will help you to benefit from the increase in street traffic on the day. If you’d like the OBA to spread the word on your promotion or special activity, we’d love to help, call us on 636 8535.

The Parade starts out at 11.30am from Onehunga Primary School, heading down Onehunga Mall from the Arthur St roundabout to the Princes St roundabout before returning along the same route, so people on both sides of the street get a good look.

After the Parade, there’s a party at St Peter’s on the corner of Church st, arts and crafts for sale at the Onehunga Community Centre and entertainment at the YMCA Jordan Centre on Pearce St. This year, there’ll be further entertainment for families including a wide selection of large board games set up along the footpath including Snakes and Ladders, Jenga, Twister, Chinese Checkers, Hop Scotch and more — all the childhood favourites!

For the Santa Parade, Onehunga Mall will be closed to traffic during the Parade (from 11.30am-12pm), and vehicles will need to be moved from the area by 10.30am.

Support Needed For Special Christmas Dinner

Onehunga Workingmen’s Club provides venue but donations are required Christmas can be a difficult time for many and children of prisoners are no exception. The Onehunga Workingmen’s Club is playing a part in bringing joy and relief to families this year by providing the venue for a special Christmas dinner for around 200 children and caregivers on 20 December, at no cost.

The Club will provide the venue and staff but without donations of food, services and cash the initiative will struggle to go ahead. If you’d like any further information about the event, and how you can help, please contact Vicki at the OWMC on 636 5600 or manager@owmc.co.nz.

Onehunga Business Association AGM 2013 Thank you to everyone who came along to our AGM this year—we really appreciate your input. It was a great chance for discussion with several issues raised including the earthquake compliance for buildings.

Update On The Onehunga Foreshore Restoration Temporary Closure Of Orpheus Drive

Orpheus Drive will be closed to private vehicles from 14 October. This safety measure is likely to remain in place until bulk earthworks for the project are complete in November 2014. Orpheus Drive will be open to pedestrians and cyclists, with a shared-use path providing access between the Manukau Cruising Club and Seacliffe Road. Parents can continue to drop-off and collect their children from school at the southern end of the motorway footbridge.

The closure is designed to reduce the risks to the public from adjacent construction activities and the large number of daily truck movements in and out of the site. Increasing traffic over the coming months and the likelihood of more people being out and about on the harbour‟s edge in the warmer weather have made this requirement even more of a priority.

OBA Supports Campaign To Transform Onehunga Wharf Visitor and Recreation Study commissioned to boost profile

The OBA has been working closely with the Manukau Harbour Restoration Society to push for the transformation of the Onehunga wharf into a bustling, public area.

The Manukau Harbour Restoration Society is commissioning a 16,000 visitor and recreation study into the Manukau Harbour which they hope will help will boost its profile.

Spokeswoman Bronwen Turner says the wharf is “poorly maintained” and needs to be taken in a new, community-inclusive direction. “We think it‟s time for the use to evolve,” she says. “There‟s just so much stuff that could happen on this wharf.”

Protect Your Computer From Cryptolocker Virus Make sure you have an offline back-up of your data This is an alert to warn you to protect your computer from an insidious new malware virus called Cryptolocker.

Cryptolocker is a brand new virus and is a really nasty destructive programme (http:// www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/9292204/Criminals-hold-computers-ransom). In brief, it essentially locks all critical files on your computer and makes them completely inaccessible to you.

Once your computer has been affected it is very difficult to resolve without paying a fee to the hacker to unlock your computer. If you do not pay, Cryptolocker then destroys all the files and data held on your computer - usually within 3 days.

Ransomware is not new. It has appeared in several versions over the last few years, most recently the well-publicised FBI version. Typically ransomware installs a malware application on your desktop or laptop and then requests payment to have it removed. A skilled IT technician can remove these for you.

Cryptolocker is radically different. Once installed, Cryptolocker silently encrypts your files and then hides the special key required to decrypt the files to somewhere on the internet. Without this key you will not be able to open any of your files. Cryptolocker will then ask you to pay a fee to get the decryption key. The fee is about USD/Euro $300.00, which is not cheap.

Water Safety Family Day

Saturday November 9, 10am-4pm, Waterfront Reserve, Mangere Bridge Everyone is welcome to attend the FREE Water Safety Family Day on Saturday November 9th.

Bring the entire family to enjoy slip „n‟ slides and bouncy castles for the kids. There‟ll be a kids fishing competition and you‟ll have the chance to watch helicopter rescues, surf lifesaving demos and check out the Coastguard boats, all while learning about water safety.

Auckland Unitary Plan Open For Submissions Find out more about what changes have been made to the draft

The Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan is now open for submissions until 28 February 2014. Auckland Council is holding six open days around Auckland during November, where you can find out more about the proposed plan and hear what changes have been made as a result of feedback during the informal engagement period earlier this year.

The open days will feature displays on specific issues and areas, printed copies of the plan‟s text and maps, access to view the plan online and experts on hand to answer questions. There will also be seminars on a range of topics such as residential zones, heritage and the environment as well as an opportunity to learn how to find your way around the online plan.

Volunteers Sought For Mangrove Research First Saturday of the Month for next three months

For the next three months, The Manukau Harbour Restoration Society will be undertaking their regular mangrove research and welcome volunteers to come along and help with the research.

You can participate in as much or as little of the research as you wish and have time for. Remember to wear clothes you don‟t mind getting muddy, gumboots or diving booties (or other shoes that wont get lost in the mud – no jandals). Hats, sunscreen and water all help if the sun‟s out.

The MHRS are studying areas where mangroves have been removed recently such as the areas where they‟ve removed mangroves around the Mangere Inlet and also at Pahurehure.

Recently, there has been a team of people coming into businesses selling strawberries, unfortunately we are unable to stop them doing this, but we can stop anyone who is selling on the street. Please call us on 636 8535, if you spot somebody selling products on the street.
