Additional time may be required as various situations arise requiring action from the business association. Beyond this, energetic, wellconsidered extra input from committee members is always welcome to help Onehunga advance its strategic goals.

OBA To Fund Shop Front Clean Up

A well presented shop front is essential in this competitive market

Our customers have a wide variety of options when it comes to choosing where they will spend their money and it’s vital we do all we can to remain competitive including making a real effort to keep our shop fronts clean and tidy. The Onehunga town centre and your business competes with Westfields Sylvia Park which offers shoppers a pristine shopping experience, shops fronts are sparkling clean and inviting. In order to lift our image and ensure shoppers choose Onehunga town centre, we have decided to take action and where appropriate, we will fund a wash down and chemical solution clean of business front windows, buildings and under verandahs — we will work with you on an individual basis. Please speak to your landlords about this clean up we have planned and if you do not want your business cleaned, please contact us on 6368535. Once we have a date confirmed for the clean up, we will send out a letter to you and your landlords with details.

Update on Onehunga Town Centre Rubbish OBA demanding answers from Auckland Council

After calling up Auckland Council on an almost daily basis to report the lack of litter collection and general untidiness of the town centre, an Auckland Transport representative and a contractor for Liveable Communities agreed to meet with us. Onehunga Town Manager, Amanda Kinzett, expressed concern that there were high traffic areas in the Onehunga town centre that were no longer being cleaned or to a very poor standard and that during her eight year tenure as manager, it is the worst she has seen. She emphasized that the lack of cleaning services in certain areas has an impact on business people in the area. “Our retailers have a hard enough time competing with a Westfields - having a clean and tidy shopping area is vital for these businesses to compete.” We presented a series of photos that we have been taking on a daily sweep of the area that highlights the cleaning service that is in place now. We have requested that we return to the former cleaning service which was carried out on a much regular basis and was of a good standard. Both representatives have agreed to put forward our concerns to their manager’s and to get back to us before the end of the week. If we do not hear back from them this week we will be escalating this issue further. We have just heard that the contractors who are responsible for the town centre have been on a trial for the last three months and their contract is due to finish shortly — we will be expressing our dissatisfaction with the contractors during this period. Please let us know if you come across any areas that are looking untidy and have been neglected by the contractors.

Join The Onehunga YMCA Running Club Starts on Wednesday 2 October at 7.30am

The Onehunga YMCA is starting a running club for members. This is an initiative that they have put in place free for their members to create and enhance community, family and team. This programme is run by volunteers of the Jordan Centre - with Mason Haru volunteering his time for the running club at 7.30am Wednesday mornings from the 02nd October. The programme will start with a 4km short course and as people progress it can get longer or people can stay doing the same distance. The idea is for everyone to start the run together and for those who are a little fitter or would like a longer run, they will complete a stage to then go back and run with the people at the back of the pack to all finish together.

It's paved the whole way (but you can run on the grass if you like). September 29th is exactly five weeks before the Auckland Marathon, and the perfect time for competitors to have a 'hit out' on the way to their longer event. Starting and finishing at the Onehunga Bay Reserve, makes for an enjoyable day. There will be a rolling prize giving offering both merit and spot prizes as you cross the finish line.
