OBA and Police host youth BBQ To tie in with the end of the school year, the Police and the OBA hosted a BBQ at the Community Centre to give kids the chance to meet the Police in a friendly setting. 50 plus kids enjoyed sausages provided by the OBA and served by Constable Don Allan, Sergeant Rhys Smith, and Constable Sarah Johnson. ―It was a really great opportunity for the kids to meet the Police and not feel scared and intimidated. It‘s also really good for me to have a chat to the kids — to get to know them and also find out what‘s going on,‖ says Satia Sami, Onehunga Town Centre‘s Guard.

Final B2B for 2012 loads of fun Caprica, Tues 4 Dec 5.30– 7.30 pm

Even if you were not a fan of gaming entertainment, you would have been impressed by the set-up at last night‘s B2B at Caprica — NZ‘s largest internet gaming lounge. Almost seventy local business people come along to the B2B and had the chance to explore Caprica while mingling and making new connections. Caprica‘s Manager, Stephen Andrews, took us on a guided tour and as well as seeing the range of super cool playstation simulators, we got to see some of the amazing MiG jet simulators, before they open to the public.

OBA town manager negotiates with Auckland Council

So, a big thank you Shane for your work in the business community and for sharing your knowledge with others —we really appreciate hearing from you.

This was our final B2B for 2012 but we will be holding another series of B2Bs in 2013.

―At first Alan wasn‘t quite sure he wanted to be in Onehunga — but now we‘re thrilled to be here. It‘s a ‗real‘ place, it‘s not superficial at all —we love it,‖ he says.

While you cannot miss Caprica on Church St with its 5.4 tonne MiG-21 fighter jet on top of its premises, many people said they had no idea all this was inside and found it quite surreal to see the jet simulators.

Whatever the issue, Shane listens to the concerns of other retailers and raises the issues with us. He also donated some great prizes for the Santa Parade. Together with his partner, Alan they have had a business in Onehunga for twenty years.

Applying a strict buffer corridor would stifle development

The OBA is part of a group of 11 Auckland businesses and land owners that are lobbying against the proposed buffer zones around high-voltage power lines in Onehunga. According to the Business Herald, State-owned Transpower, which manages the national electricity grid, is suggesting a buffer zone of 24m-12 on either side of a line —and said building or renovation projects inside these areas might need resource consents before they go ahead. Auckland Council is addressing the size of these zones in its Unitary Plan, a draft of which is due out in March. The group — some of them based in Onehunga where Transpower lines pass through, says the proposed buffer zones are ― overly restrictive and impractical‖ and pose significant risk for future business expansion as the land used for buffer corridors will be unusable. ―Applying a strict buffer corridor in the Unitary Plan would stifle development — land that had been planned for business expansion, which will help stimulate Auckland and New Zealand‘s economy, is now in question. We‘re going to end up with some pretty expensive car parks if this goes ahead,‖ says Onehunga Town Manager, Amanda Kinzett. The group which includes Ports of Auckland, the Wilson Group and Lowe Corporation will be issuing a letter to Auckland Council on the perceived impact of the zones. We have been asked to call a meeting by concerned property owners and businesses—it will be held on Thursday 13 December from 5pm– 7.30pm at the Library Café, 65 Princes St, Onehunga. To register please phone 09 636 8535 or email amanda@onehunga.net.nz with your details. Santa Parade a huge success

Hundreds flock to Onehunga for the event The Santa Parade is always a highlight on the Onehunga Calendar and this year was no exception. We got some fantastic feedback — some retailers reported an increase in sales and others were pleased with the exposure their businesses received. Businesses and groups had put considerable effort into their floats and the crowd enjoyed their creations. The entertainment from Blast from the Past and the magic show for the kids proved to be a hit — thanks to St Peter‘s Church for letting us use their grounds for the bouncy castle and their outdoor stage for the entertainment. Over at the Community Centre, there was a ‗crafty market‘ which attracted a great deal of interest from the crowd. This event could not have been possible without the help from many people in the community. Special thanks to our Santa Claus, John Kelleher from the Dolphin Theatre and Tony from Greenwoods Cars for driving the man in red ;Shane at Hair Mechanix for the spot prizes he provided and all our volunteers from YWCA, Rotary Club Onehunga and Tableside Trust.
