Onehunga Security Update

Keep valuable items locked away Several retailers have had personal items stolen that have been stowed away under shop counters. This is a very common occurrence and we urge all retailers to be extra vigilant and make sure they lock valuable items away.

Satia becomes part of OBA staff We‘re delighted that Satia Sami is now employed directly by OBA as Onehunga Town Centre‘s Security Guard. She‘ll be working the same hours and The Icon Security team will still be covering the night shift. We‘re working on a new uniform for her but for the moment you‘ll spot her in a brightly coloured OBA T-shirt. She‘s also got a new cell phone number so make sure you update your contacts — you‘ll reach Satia on 02 0401 13040. As usual, please contact her if you notice anything suspicious or have any concerns. Auckland Police: Smartphone theft on the rise Auckland City Central Police is concerned about the large numbers of smartphones going missing at the hands of thieves. At the present point in time, approximately 40 smartphones go missing every week from the central city alone. Smartphones are frequently targeted by property crime offenders as items of high value that are easy to steal and relatively easy to dispose of. Members of the public are reminded of the importance of taking care of their possessions and to be aware of the possibility that offenders are looking for opportunities to take items such as smartphones when they observe them in public places.

Have your say on non-domestic wastewater tariff Submissions close 18 January 2013

Watercare opened consultation for non-domestic wastewater tariff on 12 November 2012. Watercare is proposing a single, region-wide tariff structure to replace the range of wastewater charging regimes put in place by the former councils and water companies. The new tariff structure will take effect from 1 July 2013. Watercare is putting forward three tariff proposals for customers to consider: Proposal 1 - Single wastewater tariff Proposal 2 - Flexible wastewater tariff Proposal 3 - Pre-set wastewater tariff Watercare's commercial or non-domestic customers can have their say on these proposals. See their website for more information. http://www.watercare.co.nz/about-watercare/news/Pages/Nondomestic-Wastewater-Tariff-Proposals.aspx

Auckland City Central area commander, Inspector Andrew Coster says, ―The recent increase in smartphones being stolen demonstrates the massive demand for these items. Technology can assist in the recovery of stolen phones, as recent apprehensions demonstrate. However, prevention is better than cure and, by taking appropriate care, people can guard against their property going missing.‖

In some cases recently, Police have observed a trend of offenders stealing cellphones and then contacting their owners demanding money for the return of the phone. In the last week, Auckland City Central Police have been involved in two cases where this occurred. On both occasions Police were able to intercept the offender who had demanded cash from the victim in return for their stolen property. In both cases the offenders were arrested and charged with offences relating to the theft of the phone.

Businesses are therefore NOT permitted to have any sandwich boards whatsoever outside their premises. Outdoor displays must not be more than 60cm from the shop wall

This focus is very perplexing and the lack of willingness to negotiate is disturbing. Compliance Projects Advisor, David Brimble, will be visiting Onehunga on Friday 16 November to check whether your business has complied with the above regulation. He will be issuing a warning this time and in two weeks‘ time he will return again and if you have not observed the new law, your products and or signage will be seized. This signage bylaw has already been implemented in Kingsland and K Road — Otahuhu will be the next business area to be addressed. Is your computer at risk of being hacked? Increase your computer security

More effort when choosing passwords for your computer will go a long way towards making you safer online. SplashData has compiled a new list based on files containing millions of stolen passwords posted online by hackers — if you are using any of the passwords on the list below you should change them immediately. password 123456 12345678 abc123 qwerty

So how can your organisation’s employees make their passwords more secure? SplashData make the following suggestions:

Use passwords of eight characters or more with mixed types of characters. One way to create longer, more secure passwords that are easy to remember is to use short words with spaces or other characters separating them. For example, ‗eat cake at 8!‘ or ‗car_park_city?‘

Avoid using the same username/password combination for multiple websites. Especially risky is using the same password for entertainment sites that you do for online email, social networking, and financial services. Use different passwords for each new website or service you sign up for.

Having trouble remembering all those different passwords? Try using a password manager application that organises and protects passwords and can automatically log you into websites. There are numerous applications available, but choose one with a strong track record of reliability and security.

Keep up-to-date with changes to financial reporting What the Financial Reporting Bill 2012 means for you

In July 2012 the Financial Reporting Bill was introduced into Parliament, replacing the Financial Reporting Act 1993. The impact on small and medium-sized businesses? When the bill is enacted, any small/ medium sized business that is currently required to file audited ‗General Purpose‘ financial statements can stop doing so. Instead they will be allowed to prepare ‗Special Purpose‘ financial statements, like those prepared for filing their tax returns. To take advantage of ‗Special Purpose‘ reporting, an organisation must meet the following:  The total assets must not exceed $60m or have income that exceeds $30m.  Has less than 10 shareholders (but a shareholder with greater than 5% voting rights may insist on full reporting compliance, including an audit).  Or if it has more than 10 shareholders, 95% of shareholders must vote to adopt ‗Special Purpose‘ reporting. Also at present, any company that has greater than 25% overseas shareholding must file audited ‗general purpose‘ financial statements. Small/medium-sized companies who meet the above criteria will no longer be required to do so. If you are concerned about how these changes affect your business please see your local chartered accountant.
