Cooler autumn weather leads us into the school holidays, Easter celebrations and the gateway to another exciting month in Onehunga. The team at the centre are starting to plan for the ‘Common Ground’ celebration during youth week, which takes place between 19 and 27 May 2012. We are also pleased to be supporting the Onehunga Library team as they plan exciting, youthful activities during music month through May. The Onehunga Community Centre provides many opportunities for people to shine. Our place is all about people, place, participation. If you have not accessed our term calendar, pop in to the office and pick up a copy or visit our website www.onehungacentre.org.nz to see all of the great activities that the Centre has to offer. To encourage greater respect and understanding of all cultures, especially our Maori culture, planning is also underway for Matariki@Onehunga Festival 2012. Matariki is the Maori New Year, when the star cluster called "The Pleiades" rises in the north-east in the evening twilight. Like Easter, the precise date depends on the moon. This year we celebrate Matariki between 26 June to 26 July. Come and enjoy the many activities that this wonderful community centre complex and Library bring to you. We welcome your ideas and feedback so come and share. Jenny McKay, Manager Onehunga Community Centre

‘Mana Onehunga’
Watch this space!
An intergenerational art project In the spirit of ‘Whanaungatanga’, artists Helen Satele and Desiree Alexandre are delighted once again to be part of the Mana Onehunga project involving local and community groups. Helen and Desiree have been busy planning for the third instalment of the Onehunga Community Centre’s five intergenerational art project 'Mana Onehunga'. Like the previous murals, 'Kotahitanga' (unity, inclusiveness) which has the koru symbol, and the heart symbol for 'Manaakitanga' (caring, appreciation), another symbol reflecting Whanaungatanga (relationship building, connecting) is to be incorporated into the third mural during the Matariki Festival in June and culminating in its presentation at the ‘Through our eyes’ Matariki Art Exhibition, 16-20 July. Onehunga Art group Symbolism and mixed media Each month the Onehunga Art Group meet at ONE Pearce, exploring different art styles. Last month in March, they experimented with textures, stencils, colours and melted crayon. It was the first time using melted crayon and those who attended were so caught up in their artwork, they didn’t want to stop for a tea break! Here are some of the crayon artwork that was done. This month looks at ‘Symbolism’ with mixed media e.g. collage, pastel, paints, pen & ink etc. The Art Group welcomes new members, from beginners to advanced, in an informal social art environment. Although the art sessions are nontutored, a short presentation is given on art techniques. It is $5.00 to attend with your own art materials. For more information contact Helen Satele, artzgroup@gmail.com or the Onehunga Community Centre Ph 634 9253. Helen Satele, coordinator Onehunga Art Group

Creating a SCENE at Waihi RSA
The destination for SCENE was the Waihi RSA
During March, a very flash coach departed from Pearce Street Hall carrying 50+ of our local senior citizens. The SCENE was set and the destination was Waihi RSA. From all of the positive feedback, a very enjoyable day was had by all who attended. Shirley, our wonderful facilitater said that our seniors loved the high tech coach which transported them to their destination. The coach was not only extremely comfortable, but came intact with a hydraulic system allowing people with limited disability to get aboard easily. The SCENE also took pleasure in the journey there which included a meandering drive to a cast goldmine followed by a delicious buffet lunch. The SCENE is now looking forward to the next outing to the Puhoi Cheese & Warkworth honey centre on Tuesday 1 May.- cost $25 (includes lunch and bus)

Turning over a leaf There is so much happening over the next few months, it is an exciting time here in our facility. Hiroshi has been updating our Whakatauki every week- it’s a great place to come and find some inspiration, and check out our great Nga Matauranga Maori collection. We will be focussing more on te reo Maori over the coming months, and putting extra effort into promoting all the great material we have in this area. If you have any ideas or suggestions, or know anyone who might like to help us with promoting things Maori, we would love to hear from you. May is bringing music month, which is a low key affair this year. We will be having a special Musical storytime on 11 May at 10.30 to celebrate the great sounds of New Zealand, as well as offering a ukelele class for Common Ground in late May- and don’t forget you can download great New Zealand and international tracks from our free online music database, Freegal. Ask staff for information, or check out our website www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz In staff news, It is with sadness that we report Leeda Ferdis, our customer services librarian is leaving us to take up a position at Mt Roskill Library. We will miss Leeda and wish her all the best. Rachael Town-Treweek, Manager Onehunga Library
Common Ground Youth Event Love the skin you’re in The Onehunga Community Centre will be teaming up again with the Jordan Recreation Centre to bring about the fifth Common Ground 2012 annual event for youth. This event, which will take place between the Onehunga Community Centre, the Library and the Jordan Recreation Centre between 19 and 27th May, celebrates our young people. This year’s theme is ‘love the skin you’re in’ This year we want to “up the ante” to include new exciting, fun, informative ways to engage with local youth from the Onehunga community and beyond. We are looking for daily themes to run aside “love the skin you’re in”. The OCC have invited over 30 community groups including agencies, local providers and Government youth bodies to engage with us regarding 'Common Ground' youth event which is unique to Onehunga. Our youth can look forward to informative and fun workshops and activities for local youth including dance, music, art and health and fitness displays. Michelle Mitchell, event coordinator, Onehunga Community Centre
