Gosh we are heading into the third month of the year already. Michelle, Lisa and I continue to be inspired by the commitment of locals here in Onehunga. We have enjoyed another action-packed month here at the centre including the refurbishment of this wonderful facility. We are all absolutely delighted with the positive feedback that has been received for our ‘new vibrant look’ within the centre. The walls and floors have had a new ‘hairdo’ with new paint and carpet, floors have been re-coated and a bright new sailcloth adorns the inner courtyard. A big thank you to all for your tolerance and patience through this process, which I acknowledge, has been quite disruptive at times. Unfortunately, we were unable to celebrate International Children’s Day on Sunday 4 March due to adverse weather conditions predicted from the Herald and the Met Service. We are now planning a ‘Whanau Day’ which will take place during ‘Matariki’. Keep checking our website for info www.onehungacentre.org.nz. Other exciting activities to watch out for are the ‘Common Ground’ Youth Event 2012 (21 to 25 May) and our third ‘Matariki@Onehunga’ (21 June to 21 July). Check our website for information www.onehungacentre.org.nz. Social media is alive and well at the centre so visit us on facebook’ … like us or become our friend to get regular updates… follow link from our website, or

‘Mana Onehunga’ is back Yes, the artists are back to facilitate the third in a series of 5 pieces of art work. ‘Mana Onehunga’ is a community engagement project based around the community centre’s five values. ‘Kotahitanga’ (unity, oneness, harmony), ‘Manakitanga’ (sharing, generosity, respect), ‘whanaungatanga’ (building relationships), ‘Wairuatanga’ (spiritual awareness) and ‘Mana Tangata’ (personal awareness). Our resident artists Helen Satele and Desiree Alexandre are facilitating this project and have already begun putting ideas together. Community will be invited to participate in the painting of ‘’Whanaungatanga’’, which will take place during Matariki (21 June to 21 July), with the unveiling being during ‘Through our eyes’ art exhibition (16 to 20 July). We have a great time, including activities such as dough, crafts, music, great toys…and best of all a wonderful, supportive group of people and children!” Kids club is everyone. It is free to join. We have grandparents, dads, nannies and of course mums! A healthy morning tea is provided with tea and coffee for the big people. A gold coin donation is appreciated to cover costs and resources. Thank you very much to Jenny, Michelle and Lisa who have been very excited and a great support in getting this great playgroup up and running while providing a great location in the Mountjoy Room at the Onehunga Community centre. Turning a new leaf Exciting times ahead The library had a great time celebrating Chinese New Year in partnership with the Onehunga Business Association. Thanks to all who participated and stopped by to watch. We have had a busy start to the year, with lots of events and plenty of books going in and out. March is New Zealand Book Month, and we want to know what books have inspired you! Come and grab a bookmark and fill it in with details of books that have inspired you so you can share your recommendations with others. In other news, Akozone is back in full swing, with lots of fun activities planned for the next three terms. Akozone is a fun, free homework centre for student in years 5-8. It's run here at the library from 3.00-5.00 Monday to Friday. Come and grab an enrolment form next time you're in the library or chat to Leena, who runs our programme. Last but not least, we welcome our new Shelver- Mumtaz. It's great to have you on board. Rachael Town-Treweek RLIANZA | Community Library Manager-Onehunga
Raising the benchmark for youth Raise up welcomes a new coordinator into the Jordan centre, Josh Martin. Josh is a talented dancer who has successfully toured with Prestige dance crew over in the states, many years in a row. Josh's passion is in helping youth discover their potential, and is looking forward to kicking off the year. The Raise up Crew is pumping, as this year’s intake is still being recruited over the next month. This means, for the first time ever, you still have a chance to check out the crew, with a no-strings-attached meeting on Wednesday afternoons from 4.30pm. We've also kicked off an awesome fitness class at the Jordan every afternoon from 4.30pm. Make sure to check it out, and keep fit this year. Lastly, we have initiated a new youth league for all those basketball fans out there! Cafe Tran and Hell's Pizza sponsor the Raise up team, so head down on Friday nights to catch or play a game... police and fire-service will be competing soon! Kat Thomas, coordinator, Raise up, Jordan Recreation Centre
