4 Common Ground 2012

As you are all aware, the Onehunga Community Centre (OCC) is one of three buildings. These buildings comprise of the main centre right beside the library (83 Church Street), ONE Pearce (1 Pearce Street) which sits right next to our Pearce Street Hall (3 Pearce Street). These facilities offer wonderful spaces and opportunities for people to connect, learn and celebrate with each other. The OCC provides many opportunities for people to shine. We are all about ‘people, place, participation’ where the OCC provides a platform which encourages and motivates people to explore ideas and share initiatives. If you have not accessed our term 2 calendar, pop in to the office and pick up a copy or visit our website www.onehungacentre.org.nz to see all of the exciting activities that the OCC complex has to offer. To encourage greater respect and understanding of our Maori culture, planning is underway for Matariki@Onehunga Festival 2012. Keep an eye out for further details of this celebration in our June newsletter and of course on our website www.onehungacentre.org.nz; or facebook.com/#!/onehungacommunitycentre. Come and enjoy the Autumn days and evenings with us in a warm, safe environment, get to know us and share your ideas at the Onehunga Community Centre, your place! Picasso Kidz Little Picassos at work What a fabulous Term we’ve had! Our little Picassos were hands on artists using a variety of exciting techniques and mix of materials. Besides many more, we printed with leafs, wove paper, made felt beads and designed interiors. These art activities have been chosen to assist your child’s concentration, strengthen small muscle development and coordination. Our parents love the concept and stated: “Fantastic! Love the fun, creative projects. Our children really enjoy the class and are so proud of what they make.” Picasso Kidz has been very successful and continues to grow in numbers. Due to the high demand we’ve now set up a second art class, starting in Term 2, Tuesdays 11.00-12.00 midday. Yes, we’re still taking enrolments for both classes. To register email picassokidz@hotmail.com or call the centre office on 09 6349253 Expose your child to a fun, stimulating environment and bring out their ‘inner Picasso’! ‘Mana Onehunga’ Stage 2: choosing a symbol reflecting ‘Whanaungatanga’ Helen and Desiree have begun on the mural, sketching in the design and painting the background in preparation for the local community to add their mark during the Matariki Festival in June. In consultation with the Onehunga Community Centre, the tree was chosen because it symbolises the Centre’s value for ‘Whanaungatanga’ - bringing people together through its branches, networks thus reflecting ‘Whanaungatanga’ (building relationships and connecting). The tree is often symbolised as the “Tree of Life”, the “Tree of Knowledge”, or “Family Tree” which has three parts – roots, trunk and branches. It’s roots provide a solid base receiving nutrients to grow, the canopy of leaves and branches provides shelter, while the trunk provides strength and holds the tree together. Together these parts provide a sense of belonging, which is something the Community Centre strives to achieve by providing learning, nurturing and growth through the various activities and community groups it supports. Starting in June, Helen and Desiree will be facilitating the mural with the local community and groups in the library foyer during the week until its completion for the ‘Through our eyes’ Matariki Art Exhibition, 16-20 July. The story is told through dance numbers, acting and singing. The production has recently started rehearsals and the cast and crew are getting excited about performing another production at the Onehunga Community Centre in July. Fastest growing branch Our community loves turning a leaf We continue to be one of the fastest growing branches in the Auckland Libraries network. For the year to date we have had the fourth highest percentage increase in books issued (14%) and books checked in (15%) for the entire Auckland region. This means Onehunga is really getting out there and reading, which is great to see. We are looking forward to May when we celebrate New Zealand music month with a special musical Storytime on 11 March at 10.30am. We will also be having a fun ukulele class on 21st May 3.30 in the foyer. Come along and join in the fun. There is also an amazing event on Sat 12 May 1.00-2.30 at the Cornwall Park band rotunda. Come and join us for the 'Great Kiwi Book Quest' to celebrate the NZ Post Children's Book Awards. We will have maps to help you and your children find all the book characters in the park and there are fun mini challenges to do at each one. Check out our facebook page for more info, it's going to be a unique free event, just down the road from us! Rachael Town-Treweek, Manager Onehunga Library

Common Ground Youth Event Love the skin you’re in We are well into Autumn now, and though change is in the air, the warmth and sunshine make the change an enjoyable journey. As we head into May, there is excitement in the air for the Jordan Centre’s “Raise up n’ represent” leaders and the Onehunga Community centre as we look forward to another year celebrating the Onehunga Youth community through the “Common Ground” event, which runs in conjunction with national “Youth week”. Due to different circumstances, our two centres have agreed upon condensing “Common Ground” into a one day celebratory event to take place on 19 of May. This year we are liaising with different youth providers in our ward, and planning toward a fun pre-exam celebration held at the Jordan Recreation centre (more information to follow). Though there will be a slight change from the “Common Ground” of the past, we can assure you that just like Autumn, there is sure to be warmth and sunshine there to make the journey through change an enjoyable one. Joshua Martin, Raise Up n Represent Co-ordinator
