Project 1 Type: Office Design for the Distributor of TATA Steel Client: Mr.Valia 2009

INTRODUCTION

DESIGN GUIDELINES

This task was a platform to offer transitional shift from academic dreamy affairs to the factual truth of practical world.

Design should possess influencing form which has to be equally convincing in terms both execution and overall budget.

A turnover to develop more consciousness in both design approach and on site feasibility, with respect to the site strengths & limitations, its context, client's expectations and budgetary considerations.

As the site has a restricted dimension in width, it limits the scope in planning for the frontage.

Along with this, it was a fruitful beginning to analyze and produce something contrary to the conventional brick and concrete constructional system. A futuristic vision with an extensive understanding of feasibility and potential within steel structures, their constructability, joinery, maintenance, response to nature, lifespan, etc. Briefly, this was a fresh direction to see through a different expression of architecture.

Narrow frontage and deep backyard required a thought in positioning of the structure on site in terms of mapping the vehicular and pedistrian paths around it. Overall design, both internally as well as externally should perform as a demonstrating element, to promote the product. Structure should offer flexibility in terms of its assembly/disassembly. Site has to be developed with dry surfaces which will provide platform for loading/unloading and will also look good when barren.

04

CONCEPT EVOLVED

Design got started with a simple & straight idea of taking an attempt to use steel as the construction material with an enhancing structural system and infilling wall system so that it itself acts as a tool to encourage the use of the product among the visitors. The form evolution was initiated with a basic cuboid geometry which was both convenient to erect as well as to disassemble. Further this basic element had undergone through different phases of articulation.......Cuboid form stretched along the depth of the site, as there is less scope for design within its width. This form is further enhanced with landscaped features like water body, dry pathways, etc.

05

Option 1

Roof Plan

This option was an attempt derived out of a straight thought of fusing two cuboids with a breathing space in between. The approach was channelized in the direction of functionality that can be achieved within a simple trailer container Two trailer containers have been connected together with a light space in between to balance the overall massing. Foundation system has been worked out with smartly designed inverted pyramidal components raising the whole form in air to give it a dynamic outlook. The transitional space between the two cuboids has been enhance with a coherent system of jail walls raised out of steel sections creating lovely lighting effects. This space being the visitor's area has been developed as a key source to display maximum possibilities of the product in terms of promoting its use. Ground Floor Plan

Option 2

This concept had its birth with the thought of designing a compact form floating on water body. The foundation system is designed with a symbolic representation of duck feet and is executed with simple joinery detail so as to minimize its visual effect. Court has been raised above ground level so as to get its view from all the spaces enclosed within the structure. Planters are kept in pots on a horizontal steel frame for free air movement.

Entrance foyer has been designed with hydraulically openable panels, when opened create canopy above.

Option 3

This option was initiated with an idea of designing a “shamiyana on wheels”. As the whole design was erected on a trailer platform, scope was limited to design the spaces in a linear planning system. To minimize the visual effect of the length, whole half section of the structure is designed with a facade in vertical steel section arranged densely and covered with acrylic sheets of different colours. Interiors of the structure were planned as per the overall guideline concept of shamiyana with canvas sheet curtains that can be manually rolled up and down with respect to the sun-glare.

Option 5

Out of all four concepts, this was the most convincing attempt in terms of both execution as well as overall budget system.

The foundation system of the structure has been developed with an idea of widely spread legs giving it more dynamic look.

As the site is offering a narrow width, spaces are arranged compactly within the cuboid to deliver minimum footprint along the width of the site.

The basic compact cuboid form has been transformed into a more detailed out result with more enhanced structural system.

This cuboid is further articulated along its edges and elaborated in terms of its structural system.

The process was followed with the previous thought of designing a form that will give a reflection of a "crawling insect" which will activate the natural greenary available on site.

Structural grid of the structure has been designed as per the market sizes available in metal sheets so as to avoid wastage at the time of the construction.

Further the enforced structural system, that is giving it an outlook of a “fauna form” has been enhanced with a contrast colour theme to dominate its existence.

The elevation facing towards the frontage of the site has been articulated with two wide openings giving interpretation of a caterpillar's face with two huge eyes.

Project 2 Type: Kiosk design for distributor of Hindalco Sheets Client: Mr. Jai 2009

INTRODUCTION

DESIGN GUIDELINES

“Less is More” – by Robert Browning. This phrase got its strength in my mind with this new opportunity of designing a display shop for the distributor of Hindalco roofing sheets with a distinct mobile character. This much design brief was enough to drive the thought line into dynamic ideas to produce something meaningful but at the same time amazingly offbeat. But the true challenge throughout the task was to unfold wide possibilities in terms of both design and functionality with budgetary constrain though it gave rise to the brainstorming sessions that helped out to deliver productive ideas to generate maximum useability within defined resources.

A display cum shop for the distributor of Hindalco roofing sheets. Instead of designing a fixed retail outlet, whole idea took a turn to design a semi-permanent structural system (kiosk), using steel sections and hindalco roofing sheets as infilling panels. Different facades of this kiosk have been designed to display various varieties of Hindalco sheets available in the market in terms of their colours, patterns, etc. In other terms, this idea was evolved with a thought taken into consideration of designing this structure to fulfill the purpose of promoting the product and its use within public.

25

CONCEPT EVOLVED

The concept had its birth from an idea of a tradition indian "tupri", which we usually relate with "chai tupri" or say "wada pao ya chat tupri". but this attempt was resulted into an unconventional thought of designing a retail outlet of roofing sheets in the form of a kiosk(tupri) which will equally demonstrate the varieties of these sheets as well as encourage people with its uses. An important thing about this concept was its mobile nature.it offers flexibility in terms of displaying the product at different location. in simple words it is just a retail shop on wheels. Different faces of the kiosk has been designed with different coloured roofing sheets to display themas well as to give it the conventional "colourful tupri" look.

Wheels are designed with a thought of traditional "child walker". all four wheels are detailed out in all four direction for convenient and flexible movement. The top facade has been enhanced with different eye-catching elements like a "watch", "temperature board", "date chart", and name plate of the owner. These elements articulated its four facades so as to activate the space wherever it moves.

Project 3 Type: 4 BHK Bungalow Client: Mr.Ratnesh Gauhar 2009

INTRODUCTION

DESIGN GUIDELINES

This was a challenging task of designing a 4-bhk bungalow with large no of requirements on a piece of land having limited area. The expectation of client dictated a vision to possess a dream home with addition character to every space and a balanced integration of indoor and outdoor areas to offer better light and ventilation.

At the beginning of the process, it was necessary to absorb client's futuristic approach, trendy lifestyle & his free-spirit mindset. This was a sort of hint to judge his expectation level which was ofcourse very high.

Along with basic living fundamentals, designing of supportive activities like family area, hobby space, living court, puja, garage store, working studio, attached wardrode to every bedroom, kitchen with utility & store was the worked out design brief as per client's requirement.

With limited base ground and huge bunch of requirements, the very first job was to sensibly analyze the segregation of spaces both horizontally and vertically. Excluded the side margins of the plot, the footprint was divided into different areas and were arranged in level to carve out spaces beautifully integrated with each other both physically and visually. As per the client's belief in directional studies of vastu, kitchen had to be planned in south-east direction which proved to be a smart decision to offer a visual connectivity to the entry point in terms of security point of view. of planning a central staircase system with

29

CONCEPT EVOLVED

The whole idea had its birth with simple logic of planning a central staircase system with spaces arranged all around fusing them into a harmony with effective segregation of functions but generating a visual connectivity as well.

Family area at upper level offers overlooking to the living below and to the kund below. Circular openings of varying sizes articulates the entire space with beautiful light and shadow patterns.

Entrance porch has been articulated with a lotus pond and puja ghar located at its other end, an interpretation of relation between old temples and their holy kunds.

Guest room at ground level has been designed with multiple activities, to be utilized as a hobby space or work space as well.

Living space integrated with outdoor sitting green space gives it a fresh and lively sense. Double height enhances its character further with playful lighting effects. Central staircase has been fused with a shaft that acts like a wind tower, facilitates the wind flow to all the spaces.

Separate vehicular, pedestrian and servant entry has been carved out for proper functioning. All facades had been enhanced with openings of different topology to create interesting effect in massing.

INTRODUCTION

DESIGN GUIDELINES

This project was an endeavor to deliever something which is just beyond the expactations of a common rural man.

The first challenge of this attempt was to analyze the expectation and zest of client's lifestyle and to fuse it with today's contemporary living fundamentals and of course his budget (6 to 7 lakhs).

Designing a 1-BHK unit with common living facilities sounds quite straight but to mould the programme with quality designed spaces, playful lighting effects & elements that speak “out of the box” thinking to give it a contemporary look in contrast to its context was the key objective in approach.

With the limitations of plot boundaries and requirement of minimum footprint as per the budget, layout had to be of sensibly planned layout with equally integrated open spaces to offer effective inflow of natural light and air. Design was also influenced by client's belief in vastu.

35

CONCEPT EVOLVED

Whole concept was worked out with a smart decision of keeping the footprint not in the center but eccentric to the plot giving large open space to the east edge. This was the key character to the linear layout enforcing better light and ventilation to all the spaces. Entrance body has been enhanced with natural stone pathway and lotus pond giving it an inviting character. The east façade has been articulated with large openings of varying typology to offer visual connectivity between indoor spaces and outdoors. Apart from the outdoor court, an inner court on the west side has been carved out as family/hobby space. This space has been further enhanced with beautiful lighting effects both naturally and artificially. Enclosed from all sides, stone wall with deep openings gives it an effect of natural open space.

Large span staircase flight in fabrication with open riser allows free flow of vision through the spaces generating an effect of uninterrupted large space. Living space has been designed with large window with additional sitting space and kitchen was integrated with long horizontal opening with centrally pivoted window frame. Bedroom space was enhanced with huge framed opening that can be converted into balcony looking into the garden. Ceiling of ground floor stairs has been designed with folded plate staircase flight to facilitates the provision of future extension and to articulate the overall massing with distinct staircase block. Separate vehicular, pedestrian and servant entry has been carved out.

Project 5 Type: 4 BHK Bungalow Client: Mr.Waghmare 2009

INTRODUCTION

DESIGN GUIDELINES

This job offered a brilliant opportunity to absorb yourself into being more sensible towards the relational bound between people and spaces. This line of work was influenced by the existing site element & somehow they acted as an instrument to put light on further path.

The key influencing factor of this assignment was the restricted margins with narrow width. With this, it was expected to sensibly lined out the division of spaces with sufficient set-backs to offer natural light & ventilation.

Designing of a 2-BHK tenement fused with existing workshop was the only input received from client but fortunately the layout developed so fruitfully to deliver something beyond expectations. Though the site was bounded with restriction along its width but the frontage and connectivity to the road lined to its length was exuberant to offer maximum possibilities.

Analysis of existing elements on site(workshop) & fusing it smartly with the proposed layout was one of the prime objective. Client's faith in “Vastu” & requirement to provide provisions for future expansion were additional regulating factor.

40

CONCEPT EVOLVED

The concept originated with a wise thought of utilizing the potential available in site with its larger edge being exploited to lay spaces at the center & carving out large courts on both east and west edge to offer maximum inflow or light and air. Further placing of central staircase proved to be a smart decision to allow breathing of spaces aligned all around.

Main doorway has been fused with a cozy shoe lobby enhanced in double height vertically & skylight above.

With the limited space availability, area below the flight has been utilized as small puja den & storage near to the washroom.

At the entry point, the line of vision gets automatically diverted to the cantilever stairs projecting out of red screen and further as the path continues towards living, the hierarchy in the heights is the key attraction.

Staircase has been given a mysterious effect by designing one flight as open riser cantilevered & other one as wedge slab staircase in ferrocement enclosed with walls on both side. This was the key element to ignite curiosity.

The offset available on site in accordance to the existing workshop has been developed in the front yard, entrance foyer & parking.

Living area has been further extended with a large open court as sitout which is articulated with colourful glass bottles infused in walls creating a playful effect & giving a character to the space.

Bedrooms at lower level have been integrated with large open courts whereas at the upper level, rooms have been blended with seating windows.

The entryway has been enhanced with a lotus pond demarcating the extent of pedestrian entry and vehicular bay. Right at this point, a small baithak has been carved out for clients in front of the workshop.

On the other edge, east corner of the plot has been divided into kitchen and guest bedroom with equal margins of outdoor space.

At upper level, spaces have been arranged with a common family area overlooking into double height living which has been further merged in the terrace above workshop on north side as a shaded sitout.

Project 6 Type: 1 BHK Bunglow Client: Mr.Salunkhe 2009

INTRODUCTION

DESIGN GUIDELINES

The project was a true approach towards an endeavor to design a system rooted to the simplicity & sustainability of the rural lifestyle. This was a sensitive task of understanding the harmony between their mindset & lifestyle and to draft a label justified to their approach towards life and suitably fitted to gain client's gratification. A clear brief to produce an assignment of a 1BHK Bungalow with a decent integration of functionality & aesthetics was the key input.

The prime influencing factor right from the beginning was the focus to attain a balanced fusion of spaces that is complimentary to their lifestyle. Within a limited scope of plot margins, the key challenge was to give a character to every space integrated with a simplified thought and detailed focus on the functionality of the spaces. A clear & sensible approach to utilize and fuse the setbacks in space for functional flow of indoor activities. North frontage was utilized as shaded entrance & integrated sitout for bedroom area. Layout planning with respect to the basic directional studies (vastu) & provision for future expansion was also one of the objective as per client's requirement.

47

CONCEPT EVOLVED

Right at the entry point, space has been defined with an integration of lotus pond in a narrow strip and raised green bed.

Bedroom space has been enhanced with additional sitout on north edge facing to the entrance point.

The layout has been planned with an intention to design living & kitchen/dining space on the east edge with green court running all along the length giving breathing space to all the areas.

Backyard has been modified as a service yard for utility area, toilet block & staircase block. Space below the staircase flight has been detailed out as a storage for laundry and washroom area.

To enhance this effect, full height wide openings have been detailed out on east façade to facilitate maximum inflow of light and air & to offer visual connectivity to the green lawn. Central courtyard with a small den as puja ghar & tulsi plantation was integrated between living and kitchen area to cater flowing nature of activities in rural lifestyle. Frames with bamboo blinds were designed as a flexible barrier between living, central court & kitchen areas.

Living space has been articulated with double height effect to generate an inviting character resulting in an interesting outcome of multileveled terraces. Separate entry for vehicular, pedestrian and service inflow has been mapped out.

Project 7 Type: Office Interior Design Client: Mr.Mohit Girme 2010

INTRODUCTION

DESIGN GUIDELINES

This assignment was a sort of lull to the usual designing of enclosed walls with scooped openings. A pretty limited scope of work of designing interior of a work space with just 220 sq ft was a fresh opportunity to observe and analyze things to the depth in terms of planning the layout, activities spaces, circulation, façade treatment both externally as well as enclosed within, flooring, lighting etc.

The key influential factor in the whole process was the limited availability of space and it was important to obey the basic fundamentals of anthropometry.

This was a sensible approach to go through the brain-storming sessions & to draft an outcome with maximum utility areas within a limited scope of space.

At the very beginning, it was expected to have an elaborated understanding of the existing scenario of site and its relation to the context. It proved to be useful in the metamorphosis of the space integrated with existing elements on site. The design was also influenced by the materials to be proposed in interiors with respect to their availability in the local market to minimize travel expenses and also the maintenance required for their sustainability. Provisions had to be designed for natural light and ventilation apart from artificial system.

52

CONCEPT EVOLVED

Right at the entrance point, the display façade has been enhanced with a flowing water stream & cladded with stones to give it a natural look. The post box was articulated as a standing sculpture in stone and the adjoining wall also fused with same material to bound them into a harmony. Complimentary to this entrance element a narrow planter has been carved out with tall bamboo plantation to create partial barrier to the glass façade of the work place for privacy. The glass façade of the entrance has been articulated with an itching effect in bamboo imprints to create an illusion of shadows falling on glass wall. A canopy in wooden pergolas has been developed to cut of the glare at the west edge of the entrance and to give it an inviting character. The layout has been worked out with respect to the segregation of circulation path on one side and the work place on the other side.

The length of the space has been distributed into area dictating the division of public, semipublic and private spaces. The guest area/ customer area has been enhanced with comfortable sitting integrated with workplace. The ceiling of visitor area has been articulated with scooped compartments like a coffered slab and recessed lighting effects. Pantry was fused with hanged ceiling at the center, demarcating the division of spaces. Decision of planning the working platform below the loft was followed with an intention of giving a special backdrop to the director's place & to create a cozy environment to work. Along with this very personal feel to working desk, a relaxing plateau has been carved out with Corbusier chair which gives a feel of decorative loft in general but actually possessing useful function.

Project 8 Type: 4 BHK Bungalow Client: Mr.Ekatpure 2010

INTRODUCTION

DESIGN GUIDELINES

This assignment was more like a responsibility to do justice with the client's status and royal lifestyle.

The concept had its rise with a simplified thought of arranging the spaces with clear understanding of their connection and offering transitional spaces in between to bridge the gap.

A panoramic scope of design opportunity with respect to the unlimited land margins and flexible budgetary consideration, this was an auspicious possibility to absorb client's fantasies & to lay down his dreams on paper. In this endeavor, apart from just producing a design of 4-bhk bungalow with modern era's amenities, a brainy analysis was required to understand the true rural earthy touch of cultural extremity and its synchronization with client's futuristic expectations.

Spaces have been arranged in a peripheral layout with centrally placed service shaft in order to attain maximum inflow of light and ventilation. Whole process was also ordered by directional studies ( vastu ). Planning has been worked out with due consideration for future expansion. With a stretched layout, spaces have been carved out with transitional phases in between to negotiate the aloofness and to offer physical & visual connectivity.

57

CONCEPT EVOLVED

Right at the beginning, the entrance has been enhanced with a well defined approach with elements like an opening frame in stone to dictate its existence. The dominance of the overall mass residing between beautiful farms has been further enhanced with stone cladding to the high plinth area to demarcate the extent of its base. Playful massing with varying colours has been utilized as a key source to minimize and break down the dominance effect of its hugeness. Spaces have been arranged in a hierarchy with respect to their usability and user's priority.

Living, Dining and Kitchen space have been designed with double height effect and framed partition to offer partial barrier to the spaces.

At upper level, a small library block has been carved out overlooking into tulsi courts & backyard guest cottage.

Central staircase core has been worked out for efficient & flexible circulation system.

Skylights have been scooped out in staircase block to offer playful lighting effects.

Bedrooms at lower level have been integrated with double height terraces facing to the backyard. Also, bedrooms at upper level have been fused with large terrace sitouts at east edge to offer scenic view to green farms.

Spaces have been designed with a hierarchy of vertical proportional to achieve multi-level terraces above.

Separate baithak has been carved out next to kitchen area for ladies as an interactive space. Puja ghar has been integrated with a spiritual fusion of tulsi courts on both sides. Twin straight flight staircase have been added to create a balanced composition of elements in interior.

Separate vehicular, pedestrian and service entries have been lined out for feasibility & comfort in circulation.

INTRODUCTION

DESIGN GUIDELINES

This task was a brightest opportunity to excel your endowment to originate a piece of work that verbalizes the client's laurels in society. An obligation to do justice with the resources available in terms of the abundant land margins and flexible budgetary consideration, this project proved to be a mile stone of my career.

The only governing factor in this assignment was the client's faith to possess a home with directional considerations (vastu).

Addressing about the design brief, it was expected to fulfill the basic necessity of a 4-bhk bungalow blended with adjuvant demands. Along with this, the analytic observations of their lifestyle insisted to propose quality space with enlivened flavour.

With large extent along its length, maximum possibility was achieved to distribute the space with equal margins of open spaces as a transitional phases in between.

The planning was influenced by the larger segment of the plot dividing the spaces along its width.

Opening designs were guided with prime consideration of safety as spaces were sandwiched between green courts.

72

CONCEPT EVOLVED

Right from the entrance court, spaces were designed with grand effect to express their existence. Large parking bay flooded into the puja court with small den wrapped within a lotus pond giving it a spirited and welcomed entry.

With the passing of the entry way & living chamber, floor is directing towards the 3rd box that accommodates kitchen with ancillary spaces like store and utility & dining extended into an open sitout.

As the path follows. A small baithak arrives as a visitor's hault surrounded with green belt on both edges.

At upper level, 4-bedrooms are integrated with a cozy library cum hobby space & bridged lobby overlooking into the double heighted living space.

The exit to this baithak acts as a transitional phase before merging into the huge double heighted living space blended with c-shaped stairs on one end & with open court seating on another edge.

The huge stone walls are reflecting as a key feature to articulate the entire massing and to enhance its vividness.

The way rises up with a mysterious staircase hidden behind the t.v unit in c-shape that opens up in another large lotus pond on ground level & into a library cum hobby den at upper level.
