A unique piece of craftsmanship The transformation of glass from a syrupy, hot mass to sparkling crystal is a miracle of creation that takes place every day in the glassworks of Sm책land. Form and function have been carefully tested: dif f e r e nc e is the creation of Erika Lagerbielke, one of Sweden’s foremost stemware designers, who worked on the glasses in close cooperation with wine connoisseur Bengt-Göran Kronstam. The series has received ”the Excellent Swedish Design Award”.

Anna Ehrner designs her first collection for Orrefors with a new suite of stemware. “When I set the table for a dinner party with good food and drinks I want the glasses to be special, to feel Unique. They should be perfect to drink from, but also carry a strong identity; it should not just be any random glass…The cup is held by a stem that I think expresses purity, strength and elegance with a design expression that works in most settings – from the minimalistic table setting to the more decorative one. I have worked with a strict shape that should float between the cup and the foot. It should lure you into getting engaged in the glass, you want to turn it to see how the light plays, you feel how it feels in your hand, and then you lift it to your mouth and experience the balance of the glass. A table set with the Unique glasses feels exclusive, but yet harmonized, since the sizes of the glasses go so well together.”

“The Poppy is associated with Demeter, the Greek goddess of fertility and the harvest. My inspiration comes from the moment the poppy opens up and spreads its seeds across the countryside. The colours symbolize the various play of colours in rain, frost, daylight and sunshine. The incredible shape, with its uneven edges and texture, was a bit of a challenge to create in glass.”

The foundation of today’s world famous Swedish art glass was laid by the Artists entry in the early 1900´s especially for Kosta glass factory and the Kosta Boda trademark. Many of our artists have double roles, partly as designers partly artists, with creation, development and prestigious unconstrained art glass as their goal. Whatever their role it still requires the close cooperation of the skilful craftsmanship of our glassblowers, painters, grinders and polishers to succeed. of molten glass is hand-poured into the mould to cast the plate. The decorative objects in the three different plates – the bottles and glass – are heated up separately and then placed in the molten glass. The color is sprinkled on by hand before the plate is placed in an annealing oven to cool down slowly to room temperature, which prevents the glass from cracking.

Art glass – special production The manufacture of Limited edition and unique glass is entirely handcrafted, and is a collaboration between artists and craftsmen at Kosta glassworks. The History of Swedish glasswork Kosta was founded during a period of Swedish History known as the age of freedom, when the country was gradually recovering form the effects of the disastrous wars it had embarked upon at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The age of freedom was characterised by a new spirit of optimism which infused both public and private life and inspired numerous ventures of all kinds. Cultural and scientific academies were established, government became progressively more democratic, and new ground was broken in the arts and sciences alike. It was during this dynamic age that a glassworks, surprisingly modern for its time, was founded by two far-sighted entrepreneurs in what is now the village of Kosta. With the help of skilled craftsmen brought in from abroad, the new enterprise was soon on stable ground. Just over a year after its inauguration, on 11th of August 1743, the blowing room was completely destroyed by fire; but by the 15th of October of the same year a new blowing room was ready for production – an indication to future generations of Kosta’s irrepressible spirit.

Today Kosta is a glasshouse with it’s roots deeply embedded in the village and surrounding countryside. As a company it has lived long; and it is still proudly independent and capable of surviving for many years to come. For over two hundred and seventy years that have passed since Kosta’s foundation, courage and determination have been the hallmarks of those who have worked there. Cooperation, stubbornness, dexterity, craftsmanship, inventiveness and artistic flair are other qualities which have helped Kosta survive.
