There are many different kinds of ways that people and animals learn. People can adjust the way they learn to the different situations in which they are learning and what they have to learn. One form of learning is known as conditioning. Conditioning emphasises the relationship between stimuli and responses. The two types of conditioning found are Classical conditioning and Operant conditioning. Learning may occur in different ways. Psychologists have distinguished between different types of learning, these being Observational Learning and Insight Learning.      Classical conditioning refers to a simple form of learning, which occurs through the repeated association of two or more different stimuli. And example of operant conditioning is the training of rats to press a lever in order to obtain a food reward. The pressing of the lever (conditioned response) is associated with the food reward (unconditioned stimulus). After a training period, the rat will show the conditioned response of pressing the lever even without the presence of the unconditioned stimulus of the food.      Observational learning occurs when a person or an animal uses observation of another's actions and their consequences to guide their own future actions. The person being observed is referred to as a model. For this reason observational learning is also referred to as modeling. Observational learning involves four stages, attention, retention, reproduction and motivation–reinforcement. Attention is when the learner observers the actions of the model (The higher the status of the model the more attention the learner will pay and the closer their imitations will be to the models actions). Retention is when the learner retains in their memory what they have just observed. Reproduction is when the learner will reproduce or imitate the actions of the model that they have just observed. Reproduction is when the learner reproduces or imitates what they have just observed. Motivation–reinforcement can come in various ways. External reinforcement, through praise for doing something well, self–reinforcement, through the

Lifelong learning

Lifelong learning is the continuous building of skills and knowledge throughout the life of an individual. The first characteristic of lifelong learning is that it encompasses both formal and non–formal/informal types of education and training. Formal learning includes the hierarchically structured school system that runs from primary school through the university and organized school–like programs created in business for technical and professional training. Whereas informal learning describes a lifelong process whereby individuals acquire attitudes, values, skills and knowledge from daily experience and the educational influences and resources in his or her environment, from family and neighbors, from work and play,...show more content...

The computer industry is a growing field that will never stay the same as it was when it started. We will always need additional learning to be able to keep our jobs or move up on the corporate ladder. We can learn about these changes by going back to school, going to workshops, or on the job training if it is available. These opportunities are tools that will help you learn more about your job. The skills that you learn at one job will help you advance in that position or get you another position with that company or another company. For example,

If you we are tired of being at that same died end job make that change and go back to school to get that additional education to pursue your dream that you have. Working a job and having a career are two different things. After spend some years in the work force I decided to further my education. I wanted a career that I can advance in and learn more.

The process of designing a lifelong learning plan begins with putting it in writing. This plan, sometimes called a learning contract, must be a dynamic process intended to provide structure in an unstructured environment – known as everyday life.

Lifelong learning exists within this world, allowing learners the freedom to enroll in formal continuing education programs or self–directed learning such as learning how to garden or play an instrument, as examples. A personal learning plan or learning contract should focus on the following four

Learning Styles

The reason for doing this report is to try and discover which is my best and worst way to learn and then to come up with a strategy for improving my ability to learn. The first thing that I need to do is research what different learning styles there is, after I have done this I can determine what are my preferred learning styles.

Types ofLearning Styles After doing some research I have discovered that there are four main ways of learning. For each of these four ways there is a continuum, this continuum determines which particular style somebody may prefer.

The first continuum of learning is Active and Reflective, this style is to do with the way in which a person may go about his/her learning. Active ...show more content...

For three of the continuums I was biased towards one particular style, these are active, visual and global. This would indicate that I learn best when I can get involved and try things out. It also indicates that I absorb information best when it is presented visually in things such as diagrams, tables, graphs etc. furthermore, the test showed is that I learn best if I get an overview of the whole topic before I start concentrating on the smaller details. The final thing that this test points out is that I?m neither sensing nor intuitive. Due to this I am able to learn the facts surrounding a subject but I am also able to grasp theories and ideas. I absolutely agree with the results of this test and would say it is a fair judgement on my learning preferences.

My Learning Style Weaknesses are? As discussed before the best learners have a balanced learning style and therefore my greatest weakness is that I don?t have the ability to adapt my learning style to all situations. Because of this I may miss out on some vital information because it isn?t presented in a format that I am totally comfortable with. Even though I am a good learner when I learn actively I don?t learn as well when there is nothing practical for me to take part in, in order to re–enforce the things that I have learnt. I also find it difficult to absorb information when it is not presented in a visual format. Another weakness of mine is that in

Learning Is An Effective Learner Essay

Learning is, for me, a continuous journey that is always changing. It creates personal and memorable experiences that allows me to come away a better person than I was the day before. Learning has enabled me to discover myself as an individual and recognise my strengths and weaknesses which I continue to build on each day.

The readings I have chosen, explore a different way of learning and a strategy to become an effective learner. The first reading by Khan (2012) explores Cottrell's strategy of 'C.R.E.A.M' and how using all five components enables you to be an efficient and successful learner. I was interested in how this would be implemented to all children within the classroom setting, especially as all five strands are diverse. The second reading I have chosen to explore is 'The valuing out–of–classroom learning' (Catling, in Cremin & Barnes, 2014) which explores the significance of using other environments to develop knowledge and understanding. This particular reading excited me as I enjoy working outdoors but did not get many opportunities to experience this during my time as a primary school pupil. However, since completing work experience in various schools, I have recognised the popularity of outdoor learning for children of primary age and wanted to further my understanding and knowledge of this different way of learning.

The C.R.E.A.M system encourages and promotes you, as a learner, to "apply strategy" (Cottrell 2003). This is based off five components which Get more content

Experience Of My Learning Experience

My most memorable moments occurred during my elementary school years because most of the learning was combined with fun school trips. I remember learning about Native Americans and the way they survived in the wild. I was amazed to learn about them and the tools they made as well. The baskets, fishing, and use of acorns for food. We were able to learn about the importance of knowing of those who came before us. Also, about the close knit families they had and traditions. The historically aspect of it was very interesting because they were people that were very different from the culture we knew. The aha moment came by visiting Pioneer Village because I was amazed that we can see and touch a replica of those times. I realized that...show more content...

During my time in school, there were many great field trips and I am aware that not all schools have the same funding. Therefore, I could only imagine all the effort it took to find a location at Morro Bay and plan a trip to Pioneer Village. First, the teacher must have planned the lessons that could coincide with the trip. Students will then be able to experience everything they had learned in the classroom. Before proceeding with the lessons, days before a field trip, teachers must get clearance and get permission slips from parents. Also, a teacher must figure out if there is funding from the school. I would imagine that the opportunity would be presented from the school administrators because there were other classes from our school who went as well to both field trips. Therefore, teachers may have collaborated in regards to the lessons and making the trips happen amongst each other. In order for students to be prepared for the trip, I would have made sure the students learned what they were going to experience. For instance, we were aware of how the acorns were crushed; therefore, we were excited to crush them in the same manner we learned that Natives did. For the ocean trip, students must learn safety precautions because they could slip on the rocks. Teachers must be attentive and helpful to the student's needs and question while at the location to ensure they understand the meaning of their surroundings. The two field trips were a great

What Is Learning Essay

What is Learning

Learning is commonly defined as the process that groups together cognitive, emotional & environmental influences & experiences for acquiring & enhancing personal knowledge, skills & values etc. (Ormorod, 1995; IIIeris, 2000). It is knowledge acquired by study. A Learner wishes to gain & commit to memory new skills, to be taught, to find out & acquire knowledge. Learning is simply not just to listen but to build on prior knowledge & transform information into intellectual activity. Some people learn by "Having a go." They try something out sooner rather than later then reflect on it later either alone or in discussion with others, Retrospective reflection. Other learners are more kinetic in...show more content...

(Rogers 2003).

Formalized & Acquisition learning contrasting as they are can appear in the same context as both are present in families & schools so the mix of the two can be thought of as forming a continuum. Incidental Learning or unintentional, accidental learning events occur continuously throughout our lives. We learn through acquisition methods which happen during the course of some other activity, be it experimental or life related even though the focus is still on another task. Facilitative learning (developed by Rogers & others) with the educator acting as a facilitator by creating an atmosphere in which learners are comfortable, consider new ideas & not threatened by external factors. (Laird 1985)

Learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning & provide much of the input for the learning through their experiences & insights.

Experimental learning has a four stage process as set out by Kolb & can begin at any stage it is continuous & has no limits to the number of cycles you can make in a learning situation. (Mc Gill & Beatty 1995).

So what is learning? Learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour with behaviour including observation, thinking, attitude & emotions. (Burns 1995.)

The first time as an adult learning or I thought it was adult learning was when I was in my mid–thirties. Here I am again many years later back at it again. This time is totally different than the prior years. I was a part–time student, married, working and raising our children. My major was Criminal Justice and I took classes on campus. At that time the adjustment to going back to college didn't seem difficult to me at all. It almost gave me the feeling of being back in a high school setting. I was able to settle right in even though the majority of my classmates were straight out of high school. This was so different for many in so many ways, I felt like I had a true purpose for being there. I had set educational goals for myself so that I may be more productive in my life skills. When I was in high school I warranted to be there but college was my choice, I wanted more fulfilled educational in my life. I knew that academically enhancing my education was an achievement that I needed to accomplish. I didn't know at that time that there were different types of adult learners, different strategies, styles, categories or models for adult learners. I was under the assumption that you went to class, listened to the instructor, complete your assignments before the dead line and get a grade. This is the same method I proceeded in high school.

McGrath states "the pedagogical theory assumes that the student will simply learn what they have been told" (209, p.

Teaching Techniques for Different Learning Styles

As teachers we will be faced with many difficult tasks one of which will be finding creative ways to motivate the children in our classes to learn. There are so many teaching techniques it may be overwhelming for new teachers. With the emphasis on test scores and the "No Child Left Behind" Act many teachers may fear being creative in the classroom. This paper will attempt to explore some creative teaching techniques.

Recently there has been much discussion about different learning styles. As teachers it is important that we try to teach to all the styles in order for the children in our classes to be motivated to learn. Flexibility and creativity can aid teaching different learning...show more content... Some Tips for teachingauditory learners are:

–Read instructions for assignments and tests out loud

–Verbally explain charts and graphs

–Brainstorm with the children

–Have students work in small groups

–Use music

Music is an excellent way to increase language skills in auditory learners. Teachers can have the children write their own songs and use songs and rap as poetry to teach reading.

Kinesthetic learners make up fifty percent of the population. Some tips for teaching kinesthetic learners are

–Have the children make their own charts and graphs

–Have plenty of opportunity for the children to "do" for themselves

–Provide ample time for students to move around minimizing time sitting and listening

–Make sure the children have some time to work out their energy (through recess or physical education)

Science is an excellent area for kinesthetic learners. In reading teachers can have students act out stories. Teachers should try to have as many hands on activities as possible to encourage these students to perform to their full potential.

The most difficult thing for teachers to do is to balance the 3 styles to ensure that all students will feel motivated to learn. Teachers need to find a way to tailor their teaching styles to fit all types of learners in their classes.

All children will benefit from being exposed to the different teaching styles that accompany the different learning styles.

Students have different ways to learn. Some people are hands on learners or visual learners. Teachers try to adapt the way they teach; to the way their students learn the best. Different learning styles have different effects on people.

Learning in a Changing World has brought on a number of positive learning experiences. The knowledge I have gained and theory I have completed through assessments and in class discussions and tasks has broadened my understanding of learning. It is evident through this text that the theoretical perspectives focused on in this subject have had a place in the process of my learning journey throughout the semester. Whether this learning has been learning a new skill for an assessment, observing learning and assisting teaching on placement or collaborative learning in the tutorials, it is clear a number of theories tie into these learning experiences.

As I began my journey of learning a new skill which was how to play a song on the piano, I was...show more content...

I was lucky enough to be placed at Thornbury Primary School for my first week of placement. On many occasions throughout the five days I assisted students with their work, from small group work to working one on one with students. At times it was difficult helping student as some needed more motivation than others, some learnt at a slower rate than others and at times I needed to come up with strategies to tackle challenges I faced. One challenge was assisting a boy in the class who had special needs. The class began with their Reading Workshop and first off everyone was required to read a chapter of their book to a class mate or Pre Service Teacher. Although the boy I was working with refused to read to me, I began to use a number of strategies to motivate him to complete the task at hand. Mooney (2013) expresses Vygotsky's concept, The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), it has been articulated in this text that this ZPD is the space among what someone is capable of without assistance and what someone is capable of with assistance from a peer or teacher. I implemented this theory with the student, begging with observing the situation and determining where he was at in his learning process and what he was able to achieve. I began to think that maybe he was not too confidant to

Learning Behavior Essays

Learning Behavior

Psychologists have preformed many studies and proposed many theories regarding learning. Learning can be defined as a relatively permanent change in behavior that is due to past experience. John B. Watson was an early psychologist that didn't agree with many other psychologist's ideas about learning only relating to consciousness and thought processes. As the founder of behaviorism, Watson studied learning in a behavioral perspective, an approach that emphasizes the relationship between outwardly observable behaviors and environmental events, rather than mental processes. Classical conditioning is a process of learning associations between stimuli used by Ivan Pavlov, a Russian physiologist. In...show more content...

Skinner believed that classical conditioning was limited to behaviors that are reflexively elicited. Anoperant describes behaviors that are "operate upon the environment to generate consequences." Reinforcement follows an operant and increases the likelihood of the operant being repeated. There are two forms of reinforcement: positive and negative reinforcement. When an event occurs producing a positive effect, it is considered positive reinforcement. Negative reinforcement involves the removal of a stimulus increasing the likelihood of a positive effect. An example of this would be to take two aspirins to remove the pain from a headache. Punishment is a process that decreases the likelihood of a behavior to occur again. This is not to be confused with negative reinforcement because it doesn't increase the likelihood of an occurrence. There are drawbacks to punishment. It doesn't teach an appropriate behavior to replace an inappropriate one. Also, intense punishment can lead to results such as passivity, fear, anxiety, or hostility. Finally, effects of punishment are sometimes temporary. An alternative to punishment is trying to change the behavior of others. First, stop reinforcing the problem behavior by identifying the reinforcer and eliminating it. When it is not possible to eliminate the reinforcement, remove the opportunity to obtain positive reinforcement. An example of this would be time–out for a child because he or she is no longer

Learning a Lesson (*TRY TO GET TO 3 PAGES*)

Before third grade, I had always viewed the concept of education abstractly: as a thing people do to get a job and earn money. Because of this, I didn't fully understand the importance of education, even though my parents would always tell me that it's necessary to live. To me,education did not yet have a defined value. I only thought of it as something that most people have. This completely changed once I could comprehend the power of it in real–world contexts. My understanding of education expanded from the idea of self–sufficiency to the opportunities to shape a person's life in their own image.

My mom was the first person to explain to me why people go to school. She said, "school provides the knowledge needed for a job, and that job provides money." I had stuck with that explanation for years until I felt that it wasn't as complete as it could have been. Going to school didn't seem as purposeful as it used to, and the value I held school as was shrinking. After a couple weeks of increasing disfavor of school, I finally asked my dad for his input on why people go to school. He told me that education allows people to not only support themselves, but also do good things for others. With this statement, I felt a new hope for my schooling years and resumed my original viewpoint on receiving education. For the rest of the day, I thought about the impact education had on the lives of people working influential jobs, and the Get

Knowles published six assumptions about the adult learner. The adult self–concept moves from dependent to self–directing. An adult has many life experiences which is a great source to the adult to empower learning. An adult's social role is related to the readiness of the adult to learn. Adults are more problem centered as they mature. Motivations for adults are internal rather than external and adults need to know why they need to learn (Merriam et al., 2007, p. 84). The subject matter from the law perspective was overwhelmingly dry and his delivery was no better. It was very difficult to engage in the class. I worked hard at trying to take charge of my learning but it was difficult to stay awake during the process. A couple students banded together to form a little coffee clash/ study group and that helped tremendously in the process. I understood that there are definitely subjects that are boring and that is certainly a part of the taking charge process but this experience was challenging. The problem may have been as a student I expect instant gratification when I approach a subject and digging deep there was none. The take away was that Business Law would not be my specialty.

A learning outcome that may have been helpful in my learning experience is if the facilitator in the formal setting integrated more self–directed methods of learning into the program that I experienced. I also see myself in Grow's Staged Self–Directed Model (SSDM) as an involved learner. Learning is defined as an experience that produces lasting change in the mind of the person receiving the knowledge. Learning can be conscious as in memorizing scriptures from the bible and unconscious as in something happening without any deliberate efforts (Schacter et. al., 2009). From an education standpoint, learning can also involve helping people by giving information that they can use in life. For the purposes of psychology, learning is considered a change in behavior. In looking at how observational learning occurs in regards to the Bobo experiment, I see that after observing the adult model behave aggressively with the Bobo doll, the children behaved in like manner. They too were very aggressive with the doll– kicking it, punching and jumping on it. This was the result of no direct reinforcement from anyone. Bandura's idea that for observational learning to occur one must give attention to the behavior, retain theobservation of the behavior, have the motor skills to carry it out and also have the motivation to do so is true. Give Attention: In order to learn something it is necessary to pay attention to what is going on. It is important for the observer to identify with some characteristics of the observed as I mentioned earlier – it makes it easier to pay attention and to retain the behavior. Retain Observation: It is also important to retain what is observed so it can be remember at some later time; especially if not allowed to repeat the behavior right away. Argumentative Essay On Learning And Learning

Children can learn about the world through reading material, whether that instruction is intended or not by the author, and whether the instruction is overt or relatively hidden. From cautionary, moral tales of old to modern "problem novels" and books for children about life issues, authors show and explain the world to the next generation. Matilda grew up in a family, where they did not value education or learning. While her parents went to work, she stayed home and was expected to watch TV or do nothing. Instead, she walked to the library and read books everyday. She learned many things from reading and begged her father if she could attend school like other kids her age. She read about history, law and many other educational topics that she could be learning if she was in school. Children are sponges for information around them. Children gather this information from a variety of sources, such as family, peers, and experience. In Matilda's case, she learned the most from literature and Miss Honey. Her parents did not encourage learning and her headmaster was cruel to all the students, "...children can develop understanding of themselves and others through books" (Feeney & Moravcik, 2005, p. 20). Her parents failed to help Matilda or her brother excel in school or the learning process. Luckily, Matilda continued to learn through reading.

Effects of learning Languages

Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things. A bilingual person is more than one person. Whenever we are learning a new language, it means that we have started a new life with a different vision. If we learn a language, we understand much about culture or life of a country. If we know one language we are one person, if we know two languages, we are two people. As an instance; if there is a job vacancy that requires two people knowing two languages and you know two languages, then you are qualified for that job.
