kiddie version of Zee TV's Dance India Dance - Dance India Dance Little Masters will be competing with the Color's Chak Dhoom Dhoom. Akash Chawla from the Zee TV marketing team confirmed that the channel is going ahead with a junior dance contest. The format and the judges for the show are still being finalised. According industry insiders, the channel decided to extend the show into a children's version because there were several kiddie contestants who came to the auditions this season, but weren't selected because of their age. One has to be over 18 years to participate in any reality show. Another viewpoint that analysts have is that the new show is being launched to compete with Chak Dhoom Dhoom, a kids' dance contest on their rival channel, Colors, which will be judged by Ahmed Khan, Saroj Khan and Vindu Dara Singh. Shah Rukh walked up to Neil and quickly told him the plan on stage. Neil was aghast. "How could I say shut up to Shah Rukh Khan? I've never been rude even to my driver. But he insisted. He also told me to throw eggs at him and Saif at the end of the show. I begged and pleaded to spare me. But Shah Rukh didn't listen." Neil did his own on-the-spot improvisation on stage to spare himself the aggravated agony. "Instead of throwing the eggs I walked up to Saif and Shah Rukh and broke the eggs on their heads. How could I throw eggs at them? Their fans would never forgive me!" After the act Neil's shocked father has still not forgiven his son, although he has been told it was all in jest. Says Neil: "Bipasha rushed to me and said if it was an act then it was really scary. Katrina stormed up to me after the show and told me to apologize to Shah Rukh, at once." Laughing nervously, Neil re-lived the trauma of being forced to be rude to a hero he worships. "I'm glad people finally got to see my mischievous side... But no thanks. Never again."

ays after Neil Nitin Mukesh told co-hosts Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan to just plainly and simply shut up on stage at the Filmfare Awards at Yashraj studios, a debate raged in the film industry. Was the well-behaved blue-eyed-boy's aggressive impudence towards his superstar seniors for real? Or was it just an act? To rewind a bit: At the Filmfare awards, cohosts Shah Rukh and Saif Ali Khan decided to take on Neil on stage, riling him endlessly. The final straw was the digs that Shah Rukh took at Neil's name. "Neil," said Shah Rukh, "Why do you have three first names and no surname? My name is Khan. Saif too is a Khan. How come you have no last name?" Neil couldn't take the slight to his family name. He not-so-gently reminded Shah Rukh that he ought to restrain himself because his, Neil's, father was sitting in the audience. And then, horror of horrors, he told Shah Rukh to just shut up. There was an uncomfortable silence in the auditorium. Recalling the incident with an uncomfortable laugh, Neil said: "I'm still shaking. Imagine me telling Shah Rukh Khan to shut up! But I did. That isn't all. At the end of the show I walked up to Shah Rukh and Saif and broke eggs on their heads." But relax. It was all part of an act. "It was all planned by Shah Rukh sir. fter employing every trick in the book to keep their relationship under wraps, lovebirds Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra have finally lifted the veil off their romantic alliance. The duo that has often lambasted the media for 'link-up' rumours was seen getting up, close and personal at a recent party organized by Karan Johar to celebrate the birthday of his mother Hiroo Johar. Going handin-hand, the twosome looked very much like a couple in love. Organized at a South Mumbai hotel, the party that was a very low-key affair saw the dusky bong siren walk in with her beau Aditya holding hands. Confirming the news, a source said, "Rani and Adi came in together and looked very much a couple. They walked in just before midnight and sat down for dinner next to each other. It's a clear public statement that Rani is indeed his girlfriend. It was quite unlike Adi, but he seemed quite relaxed as he chatted with the other guests." "Forget being seen with Rani, Adi doesn't like to be seen in public even by himself. He has been dating Rani for nearly three years now but never has he made a public appearance with her by his side," adds the source.

ush Hour director Brett Ratner was so taken in by Hrithik Roshan's upcoming film Kites that he offered his services to make the film click in the US. "I was introduced to Ratner in Los Angeles. We got talking about films and I showed him the English version of Kites," Rakesh Roshan, the film's producer, said. "Ratner said it's a good film with the ability to cross over only if it is presented keeping in mind the American sensibilities. He offered to work on it." A month later, Roshan returned to LA to discover that Ratner had chopped the songs from the film, and also reduced its length from 118 to 90 minutes. "His editing upped the film's intensity for the US market," Roshan said. Also starring Kangna Ranaut and Mexican actress Barbara Mori, the film's Hindi and English versions will release simultaneously in India and the US on May 21. Ratner reportedly told a US daily, "I'm not saying that Kites will be the hit that Rush Hour was, but I felt it had the potential to cross over."

exican actress Barbara Mori says she has learnt a lot from Hrithik and loves doing stunts herself. "I am really excited because Kites is the biggest film I have ever done. I never imagined that I would come to Bollywood and be a part of a film made for audience all over the world. Kites will be very important for my career because this is my first international movie. I can't wait!" she says. Performing stunts for the film, she says "I was not scared at all, because I like danger. I was really very impressed with the action director and with car crashes and explosions. Hrithik is so good at action, I was learning a lot from him. The action director kept dissuading me from doing my stunts because they were dangerous. But I went to Hrithik and told him I can do it. So he said okay and convinced the action director to let me do my own action stunts. We had a lot of fun. It was the best experience of my career! She said she would love to do more movies in Bollywood. "I live in Mexico with my son and my family and I have been working so much in my country. Of course, I will come to India soon. I'm looking forward to it."

His second wife Heetal loves her husband so much that she feels as if she is living a fairy tale, and Devika is a simple old fashioned small town girl. In keeping with his style, Akshay Kumar refused to use safety harnesses while shooting for Housefull. A particular scene required him to jump from the balcony of one building to another. Since even a slight mistake could have been fatal, the team advised Akshay to use cable wires to perform the stunt. The actor, however, refused, asserting he didn't need any help. "Akshay had to jump from one balcony to another for a scene. It was advisable to use cables for it since the stunt was quite risky and one small slip would have him badly injured. But Akshay refused and did the stunt himself, minus the cable wires," reveals a source from the production team. Akshay injured

Sajid is all praise for Akshay. "He's a thorough professional! I have seen him in extreme pain or shivering from fever but he doesn't utter a word but continues shooting. In Italy, while shooting for Housefull, we had to shoot in a hotel on the edge of a cliff, which had eight floors. While foreign stuntsmen would think twice and use cables and other things to move from the balcony of one floor we would see a cool-as-a-cucumber Akshay jumping with only cables to different balconies. I have never seen any actor perform as scary stunts as him. I

But Akshay Kumar did hurt himself doing a different scene at the Goregaon Sports Complex. He injured his right eardrum which started bleeding but he insisted on finishing the day's work. Says a source present on the sets, "Akshay was shooting an underwater sequence in a swimming pool. He dived in to the deep-end of the pool quickly, without equalising pressure and in the process, hurt his right eardrum. But he continued shooting despite being in extreme pain. Only after the shoot got over did he allow Sajid Nadiadwala to take him to the Kokilaben Ambani hospital in Andheri.

used to get scared but now I have stopped. He knows what he's doing and enjoys performing high-voltage stunts."

Sajid and Co. have also proudly declared that Housefull will be Akshay Kumar's biggest opening film ever. "Housefull is certainly not dependant on the bikini factor to help it recover money", says Sajid. "Yes, all my leading ladies are seen in bikinis as part of the song, but on a beach resort you don't expect them to come out of the ocean wearing salwaar-kameez. Also the way it has been shot is aesthetic and not vulgar by any means. Moreover, it has been choreographed by Farah who is known for her class treatment." With Housefull being the biggest entertainer in the offering soon after the conclusion of IPL, one can well expect Bollywood starved audience to hop into theaters. The film also stars Boman Irani, Chunky Pandey and Randhir Kapoor. With music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Housefull releases all over on 30th April. Crtics criticized Funny man-turned-director Sajid Khan doesn't mind the 'big mouth' tag. He isn't really bothered about reviews as he believes people, not critics, decide a movie's fate. "The fact is that critics don't have to tell me whether my film is good or not. It is the job of the audience and they would decide if 'Housefull' works for them," Sajid said. "Also, one thing I can state on record is that critics may give a one-star or a five-

star rating to 'Housefull', but in their hearts they would like the film for sure. The same holds good for audiences who will any way watch 'Housefull' multiple times regardless of the review ratings," he said. Sajid is known for taking digs at actors and filmmakers. A few weeks back, he even made fun of critics at an awards function. Did he think twice about it? "What did I do wrong? I just picked on select critics who seem to be completely oblivious to what audiences want. May be most of them know what they are doing but then there are indeed some big critics who have goofed up repeatedly in the past," the director said. Asked to cite some instances, he said: "I will give you an example where a critic gave three stars to both 'Aladin' and '3 Idiots' Are you telling me that the biggest flop and hit ever are alike in the way they were created? See, there have been so many instances when such critics have given a single star to films that go on to become the biggest hits of the year while movies that get four or five stars have turned out to be flops." "Perhaps not all critics would be kind to 'Housefull', but what's the guarantee that they would have been nice with their reviews had I not spoken about them at the awards function?" he asked. ARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK is

a decent product with an unconvincing conclusion. Watch it for the wonderful performances of Farhan and Deepika. Karthik [Farhan Akhtar], is an introvert by nature and shy by choice. He suffers with huge confidence issues and is miserable at his average job that yields less than average results. His boss [Ram Kapoor] treats him like dirt. Shonali [Deepika Padukone], his colleague, who he secretly loves, doesn't even know that he exists. Karthik is a loser. He knows it. He accepts it. And then, one night, Karthik gets a call from himself. Another Karthik says he is taking over the reins of loser Karthik's life. Before you know it, the loser has turned into a suited-booted winner, who even manages to get girl. But the good times are too good to last. The phone calls soon turn ominous and Karthik's world unravels. Karthik Calling Karthik is a love story as also a suspense fare that teases your mind. Any love story works if the chemistry and also the moments between the on-screen lovers looks real and the chemistry between Farhan and Deepika works well. Correspondingly, a suspense film works if the viewer keeps guessing what the culmination to the story would be. The mystery only deepens when not only Karthik, but also his girlfriend and psychiatrist are engulfed in this storm. All hell breaks loose when Karthik's life

BEST WORK goes upside down and Karthik is back to square one. But from this point onwards, the graph of the film only goes downwards. Debutante director Vijay Lalwani knows his job well, but he's letdown by his own writing. The second hour not only looks stretched [two songs flow one after the other, with the story coming to a grinding halt], but the pace also gets excruciatingly slow at this juncture. The climax is a complete downer. This is Farhan Akhtar's third film as an actor and it must be said that he takes giant strides when it comes to acting. The story throws seve r a l challenges at him and he emerges trumps in the most difficult mo-

ments. This is, by far, his best work. Deepika Padukone looks bewitching and acts natural throughout. Ram Kapoor is fantastic. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's musical score is an asset. The film has some lilting tunes. Cinematography [Sanu John Varughese] is perfect. Dialogues are simple mostly and at times, very witty.

jay Devgn and Konkona Sen Sharma play a Mumbai couple who are confronted one day with Chacha Lambodar from Gorakhpur, played by Paresh Rawal. This is the sort of guest who gargles loudly at 5:45 am and wants two vegetables, one dal, one raita, a few paranthas and some meetha at every meal. But the bigger problem is that he doesn't show any signs of leaving. The two try every trick in the book to get him to go - including hiring an underworld goon - but everything backfires. Eventually living with Chacha ji becomes a moral science lesson on the importance of your elders. It's a Paresh Rawal show all the way with Ajay and Konkona providing good support. "If Shahid Kapoor wasn't in 'Paathshala', it could become a documentary. The film is so serious and it's so beautiful. But people wouldn't have gone and watched just a children's film even though it deals with a serious issue," Khan said. Shahid has a nearly 40-minute appearance in the film. "Many people make many children's films, but not many become known ones. If Aamir Khan would have not been in 'Taare Zameen Par', that film would have got only limited exposure. Just because of Aamir's presence, it got a wider audience and so much appreciation. "If I would have made a general children's film, no one would have gone and seen it. "Paathshala", directed by Milind Ukey, is primarily about the Indian education system and deals with contemporary and socially relevant issues regarding children. The film also stars Ayesha Takia. "The film is education-driven and about pressure on kids. It deals with a

school...and Nana Patekar, who plays the principal, wants to make the school big by bringing reality show people in, having auditions in the school to get media coverage," he said. It features child actors Swini Khare from "Cheeni Kum", Ali Haji from "Fanaa" and Dwij Yadav from "Nanhe Jaisalmer" and Avika Gor, the youngest 'bahu' of Indian television. Khan, who was a child actor himself, says it has been a wonderful experience working with kids as they are much more professional unlike children in his times.

The movie, set to have a grand release post IPL, mixes drama with comedy. It packs in emotions and laughter and ends with a strong message for adults and children alike. "I would happily admit that "Paathshala" is inspired by "Taare Zameen Par," except for the fact that "Paathshala" was conceived and written a year ago. It's about a sensitive teacher's interaction with a group of kids," Shahid's friend and producer, Ahmed Khan, told IANS. What you'll need: • T-shirt, washed and dried without fabric softener • Green fabric paint OR green acrylic paint and textile medium • Gold glitter fabric paint • 3-D neon green fabric paint • Cutting board or cookie sheet • Wax paper • Heart-shaped foam stamp How to make it: 1. If using acrylic paint, mix with textile medium according to directions on the back of the textile medium bottle. 2. Place cutting board inside the t-shirt and then place a piece of wax paper between the cutting board and shirt. 3. Position the cutting board where you want it. 4. Tuck the sleeves, sides and bottom of the shirt underneath the cutting board. 5. Paint the heart foam stamp with a generous amount of green paint. 6. Press the painted heart stamp onto the shirt, and then carefully lift away. 7. Create shamrocks positioning three or four hearts together; they should meet at the heart points. Draw a stem to complete the shamrock. (See photo.) [shamrock_tshirt04] 8. When you are finished adding shamrocks to your shirt, allow the green paint to dry for about half an hour. 9. Use gold glitter fabric paint to add a gold glow around the shamrocks, spread with a paintbrush or your finger. 10. Pipe 3-D fabric paint around the border of the shamrocks. 11. Carefully lift the entire cutting board and shirt and move it to a quiet spot where it will remain undisturbed so it can dry overnight (or at least 6 hours). Tips: • In craft supply stores, fabric paint is usually in a separate section from the regular craft paint. Look for a section specifically geared at painted and embellished clothing. • If you like, add "Kiss Me I'm Irish" or another fun phrase to your shirt. • Textile medium is available in your local craft store, usually by the craft paint. nce there reigned a queen, in whose garden were found the most glorious flowers. But more than all others she loved the roses, and she had many kinds of this flower. But care and sorrow dwelt in those halls. The queen lay upon a sickbed, and the doctors said she must die. “There is still one thing that can save her,” said the wise man. ìBring her the loveliest rose in the world, the rose that is the symbol of the purest, the brightest love. If that is held before her eyes ere they close, she will not die.” Then old and young came from every side with roses, the loveliest that bloomed in each garden, but they were not of the right sort. The flower was to be plucked from the Garden of Love. But what rose in all that garden expressed the highest and purest love? “But they have not named the right flower,” said the wise man. “They have not pointed out the place where it blooms in its splendor. It is not the rose that springs from the hearts of youthful lovers, though this rose will ever be fragrant in song. It is not the bloom that sprouts from the blood flowing from the breast of the hero who dies for his country, though few deaths are sweeter than his, and no rose is redder than the blood that flows then. Nor is it the wondrous flower to which man devotes many a sleepless night and much of his fresh life, the magic flower of science.” “But I know where it blooms,” said a happy mother, who came with her pretty child to the bedside of the dying queen. It springs in the blooming cheeks of my sweet child, when, waking from sleep, it opens its eyes and smiles tenderly at me.” ìLovely is this rose, but there is a lovelier still,” said the wise man. “I have seen the loveliest, purest rose that blooms,” said a woman. “I saw it on the cheeks of the queen. She had taken off her golden crown. And in the long, dreary night she carried her sick child in her arms. She wept, kissed it, and prayed for her child.” “Holy and wonderful is the white rose of a motherís grief,” answered the wise man, ìbut it is not the one we seek.” “The loveliest rose in the world I saw at the altar of the Lord,” said the good Bishop, “The young maidens went to the Lordís Table. Roses were blushing and pale roses shining on their fresh cheeks. A young girl stood there. She looked with all the love and purity of her spirit up to heaven. That was the expression of the highest and purest love.” “May she be blessed,” said the wise man, ìbut not one of you has yet named the loveliest rose in the world.” Then there came into the room a child, the queenís little son. “Mother,” cried the boy, “only hear what I have read.” And the child sat by the bedside and read from the Book of Him who suffered death upon the cross to save men, and even those who were not yet born. “Greater love there is not.” And a rosy glow spread over the cheeks of the queen, and her eyes gleamed, for she saw that from the leaves of the Book there bloomed the loveliest rose, that sprang from the blood of Christ shed on the cross. ìI see it!” she said, ìhe who beholds this, the loveliest rose on earth, shall never die.”

hah Rukh Khan's performance in My Name Is Khan has brought him to a new level of selfrealisation as an actor. Speaking candidly on the yearlong sabbatical in 2006, Shah Rukh says he has been able to sharpen his skills as an actor while recovering from his back and shoulder injury and surgery. He says, "On February 16, it was a full year since my back surgery. It has been a year of torture, because my movement was confined and I hate to be restricted. But, I got to spend a lot of time with my children. I also read several books on acting. I connected to emotions within myself. It's been 18-20 years that I've been acting and am starting to discover aspects of myself as an actor, that I didn't know existed." In spite of the obvious preparedness, Shah Rukh has no intention of directing a film. "Not for a long, long time. I think it would be a while before the actor in me is satiated. People say I'm in character in MNIK, and that earlier I was only doing fluff. Being the court jester or the clown isn't easy. It's not easy making people smile." Shah Rukh sees his stardom as a monkey on his (injured) shoulder. "The luxury of failure is denied to you when people expect you to be successful constantly. When I hear someone like Mr Rakesh Roshan, whom I respect, tell me that people are applauding at the end of MNIK, I feel good. Somewhere, the film has connected emotionally with people." The star says he isn't bothered with box-office figures and finds the comparisons of MNIK with Raj Kumar Hirani's 3 Idiots, or any other film, absurd. "In our country, we always belittle what we have by saying something else is better. Better is the undoing of good. Have they ever compared Latabai (Mangeshkar) with Mohd Rafi saab or Kishore Kumar saab? Have you heard American critics comparing Brad Pitt to Tom Cruise?" Home is where good food is: I believe in one thing. It is food that can keep us fit and healthy. It is food that can make us unfit and unhealthy. So why not stick to the first type of food so that we can actually experience longevity? And this first type of food is clearly defined by me as home cooked. It could be hot rotis straight from the flame with a light drizzle of fragrant ghee, the long grains of dazzling white basmati grains that somehow make rajma or kadhi as precious as caviar or those spongy wadas that soak up the sambhar. Well, be it a pulao, or a khichdi, maybe a stew or dal rice, it could be some dry vegetable with roti, but traditional home recipes do wonders for the spirit. These recipes keep the heart ticking ensconced in warmth of tradition and cultural riches. Food eaten together keeps the family together and even if there are major time constraints I am sure something can be done to get hot food onto the table once a day ìthe more Indian it is the betterî the more traditional Indian it is the best!
