Dancing victors

t was a "dream come true" for Amit Malvankar and Falon Netto, who won Zee TV's popular dance reality show, Dance India Dance Doubles. The talented duo from Mumbai, who clinched the coveted Sunehri Taqdeer Ki Topi, were mentored by choreographer Marzi Pestonji in the show, that also had ace choreographers Geeta Kapoor and Rajeev Surti as judges and veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty as Grand Master. "My journey was fabulous. I couldn't have asked for more. Though we had ups and downs during the show, we had faith in our talent and wanted to win desperately," says an excited Falon, 25. The other half of the dancing couple, Amit, 25, says, "It feels awesome to see our hard work get paid off. The time we spent practicing has finally been justified." The couple, who have known each other for one and an half years, believes their understanding of each other's weaknesses and strengths helped them win. When asked about their future plans, Falon says, "I would like to explore the field of acting, though dance will always be my first love." Amit says, "Let's see. I haven't decided on anything yet."

Sunny Deol catches TV bug

he latest to join the small screen bandwagon is actor Sunny Deol who is set to make his telly debut as a judge on Zee TV's upcoming stunt-based show, Jaanbaaz. After 28 years in the film industry, the 54-year-old actor is visibly excited about his new innings. He says, "I am looking forward to my stint on TV. The show is about daring stuntmen who put their life at risk for their profession. It will be a thrilling show." He adds, "These a days visibility is important for any actor and one needs to be everywhere. And to be honest, I don't think TV is any less than movies today." On being asked if his 1990 uperhit movie Ghayal is having a sequel, Sunny says, "Ghayal is the movie with which I turned producer, so this time also I am trying to tread the same path by making the sequel under my home banner, Vijeta Films." We are working on the script at the moment. In Hollywood, you have Rocky Series and Rambo series, so why not here? Sequels like these take the story ahead and people enjoy them. I want the sequel to be a notch higher than Ghayal." Interestingly, Sunny is also quite pepped up about the sequel to Yamla Pagla Deewana.

t isn't very often that newbies gain a prime-time slot without much struggle. But Vandana Joshi pirouetted her way from Dance India Dance 2 to Dil Se Diya Vachan in no time. "I am an opportunist," is how Joshi explains her switch from dance to drama. Nandini, the character she plays, is a rape victim who shares a great relationship with her mother-in-law, played by Nina Gupta. "People think that reality shows are an easy medium to enter television, but I was a part of DID because of my passion for dancing. I still get together with my friends once a week to practise," she says. Even though she is part of a clichĂ&#x2C6;' family drama, her dream is to be directed on TV by Anurag Basu as he "challenges his actors".

But the dancer is having a tough time getting into the groove of moves as she is back to dancing after a long gap and also because of her illness. When contacted Vandana confirmed her presence in the show and says, "Yes I am entering Dancing Ke Superstars with Parvez. After I started shooting for Dil Se Diya Vachan, I hardly got time to dance and, a show like Dance Ke Superstars demands great energy and potential. I really had a tough time with the prolonged rehearsals as I was dancing after a break." "Also I have been suffering from stomach infection for the past few days and the doctor had advised me not to dance.

rutika Desai aka Amba of Zee TV's Preet Se Bandhi Ye Dori Ram Milaayi Jodi hurt her leg recently while shooting for the show. But Krutika, being a professional, continues her shoot. Our source says "Krutika Desai who was shooting for a major sequence of the show squashed her toes badly. She was unable to walk which apparently will be seen in the scenes as well, where she will be walking with a limp." We contacted Krutika Desai and she said "Yes I hurt my toe badly while shooting. The limelight helped her bag a number of live shows but she disappeared from television. That was until Channel V approached her for a dance-based fiction show. The 25-year-old will play Kria, a girl from Dehradun, whose passion for dancing brings her to the city of dreams, Mumbai. "I received plenty of offers for saas-bahu shows even while I was on DID, but I was not interested. I agreed to do Dil, Dosti, Dance only because the story revolves around dancing," says Mohan, who has a post-graduate degree in Political Science. While the reality show made her an overnight celebrity, she feels that fiction, despite the fame it brings, requires immense hard work. And like most others, Mohan too hopes that her next leap will be to cinema, "but without letting dancing take a back seat". Mohan met with a terrible accident when she was five years old and was paralysed for the next seven months. Twenty years since she is an acclaimed dancer with appreciation from Shiamak Davar and Terence Lewis.

Her return to the small screen is rather ironic as Punia now plays the sweet and bubbly, Geet on Love U Zindagi, the prequel to Imtiaz Ali's blockbuster film Jab We Met. From bikinis on the beach to phulkari dupattas and Patiala salwars, Punia's transition is complete. The actress has undergone an image-makeover but maintains that her bitchiness on the reality show has worked in her favour. What happened to the other four films you did? Honestly, I don't know. The shooting for them is over but I've lost hope that they will ever see the light of day. Which is why, I didn't appear on television for so long. The shows are rooted in rural India. With my face and my body type, I don't fit in those roles. So I waited for a show like Beend. The family in the show may be conservative but it has grown in stature over the years and has become very prominent in the community. There were rumours of a fallout between you and Ekta Kapoor. Any truth to them? Not at all. These rumours are always floating around. In fact, she invited me to her Holi party last week. Even if we aren't the best of friends, I will always hold her in the highest regard. Of the roles that you have portrayed in the past, which one do you relate to the most? Kkusum. The role was very easy for me. I didn't feel like I was acting at all, just playing myself. You had dreams of launching your own production house. What's the progress on that front? In fact, I've already started one with a partner called Mesmerise Productions. We've begun with one show on Doordarshan, and several short films.

has received great acclaim for his acting skills, but it is only with Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Ferrari Ki Sawari that the actor will don a new role making his debut as a lead actor. Sharman, however, doesn't feel any pressure to perform differently. "I just go out there and enjoy my work. I'm happy doing what I'm doing. All the other things that follow or are attached to it are just by-products," says the 31year-old actor. Wary of how the film will be perceived in the market, he makes sure he spells it out, "It is in a comedy family drama space, but there is no laugh riot. It's more like a heart-warming film," he says. For now, Boman Irani is the only other actor confirmed to co-star with Sharman in the film, which has been written by Rajkumar Hirani. The actor, who started off doing theatre at the age of 21, is inclined to return to stage, but is waiting for an interesting offer to come along. "Whenever I get an opportunity to be part of a good script, I would surely like to do theatre. But nothing really exciting has come so far," says the actor. His recent decision to sign up as an ambassador for a cola brand has created quite a stir.

Considering all other actors who have, in the past, endorsed or are currently endorsing similar brands are A-listers - Ranbir Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan - the question everyone's asking him is whether he too has entered the big league. "I leave these perceptions to people. The only thing that concerns me is whether I, as an actor, am doing enough. If the answer is yes, I'm happy. After that any sort of perception people have is not my concern," he says.

Mallika sang, "Munni bhi maani aur Sheila bhi maani, Shalu ke thumke ki duniya deewani." According to a source, the lyrics were originally quite different for the song. "By openly singing that she's better than 'Munni' and 'Sheila,' Mallika is sending out a clear signal to the entertainment industry. It was Mallika who wanted the Munni-Sheila element incorporated into the song. Composer Anand Raj Anand modified the tune accordingly," the source said. "Mallika wants to position herself as the No.1 item queen of Bollywood. What's more, her image as the tantrum queen is now a thing of the past. While shooting for "Munni bhi maani Sheila bhi maani", Mallika was the epitome of good behaviour.

Satire on the educational system

ebutant director Remo D'Souza's Faltu is about a slacker who isn't accepted into any college and so he creates his own. Jackky is terrible at studies. He comes across Pooja and Angad, who also failed to get admission. This makes him start Fakirchand And Lakirchand Trust University (F.A.L.T.U.). The film tries to drive home the importance of alternative education. It showcases the students of the fake college becoming winners by doing what they love. But the director fails to bring in logic to the story. Jackky has tried to bring in charm but he is not very convincing. Riteish Deshmukh and Arshad Warsi too failed to evoke much laughter though they are known in the genre. However, Pooja Gupta looks lovely while Angad Bedi and Chandan Roy Sanyal have done their job well. The music of the film is soothing and executed well but the script of the films is weak. The satire on the educational system tries to highlight the message that students should not be forced to study as per their parent's whims; instead they should be given the freedom to choose what they wish to do. So the loser kids become winners by doing what they love - from fashion to cooking to fitness. The film has lots of flip sides but it has a message to take home. On the whole, F.A.L.T.U is a film for the youth with lots of fun and energy.

fter the stupendous success of films like Welcome and Singh Is King, the Akshay Kumar-Anees Bazmee jodi teams up for the third time, promising to complete a hat-trick of enjoyable laughathons. Thank You is more of a cat-n-mouse game between philandering husbands and a detective, incidentally hired by both the sides - the husbands as well as the wives. But Thank You is as inconsistent as the roads of Mumbai. Sometimes, the ride is as smooth as silk. But there are times when one encounters potholes aplenty during the course of this journey. The first hour of Thank You is thoroughly enjoyable and you genuinely feel that Bazmee is in his element, the second hour - which should've been superior - is agonizing and intolerable. The writing goes topsy-turvy. The jokes are bland and the situations the three husbands land up in are far from funny. By the time the story reaches its conclusion, the viewer is already exhausted.

METHOD Arrange the biscuits on a plate. In a bowl, place potatoes, corn, onions, salt and chaat masala and mix. Divide into sixteen portions. Place a portion on each biscuit.
