Two new shows start on Imagine Dil Se this month - Armano ka Balidan...Aarakshan, which revolves around the quota system. The serial tries to deliver the raging social debate in India on the issue of reservation in government jobs. Zor ka JhatkaĂ&#x2013;Total Wipeout - an action-packed family entertainment game show starts this month on Imagine Dil Se which will be hosted by Shahrukh Khan. This is a show in which contestants from all walks of life compete in the world's biggest television obstacle race to win a coveted title and a big cash prize. ee TV is launching Dance India Dance fourth season this month. DID Doubles will be aired in the first week of January. Zee TV says that it has been conducting auditions for over three months this year across 18 cities in India and in the United States, UK and Dubai. The auditions have drawn over 100,000 aspirants while top 12 couples finally made it to DID Doubles. Jay Bhanushali will return as the host of the show. Dance Master Geeta Kapoor is coming back as judge. Remo and Terrence are being replaced by choreographers Rajeev Surti and Marzi Pestonji. Surti has to his credit films like Golmaal 3, Don, Wanted and Jaane Tu Ya Jane Na, while Pestonji has choreographed and performed at

ZEE CINE AWARDS to be held in Singapore global events of the stature of Commonwealth Games, IIFA awards and Filmfare Awards, apart from movies like Dhoom 2, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Taal and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Vivan Bathena plays the lead in Sanskaar Laxmi

ivaan Bathena, who has a long association with Zee plays the lead in Zee's new prime time show 'Sanskar Laxmi'. With a slew of hit shows on television and Zee TV's GRP grosser Maayka under his belt, Vivaan is all set to play the role of a modern Gujarati boy in Sanskaar Laxmi, who unlike his traditional parents wants to be independent and pursue his dreams in America. "I'm super excited to play the character called Parag. From the first narration that Raju Bhai gave me, I feel this role has been scripted just for me," says an elated Vivaan who has just signed the dotted lines. "Zee has always treated me well and given me meaty roles. Hopefully, even this time around I will get ample scope to showcase my skills," concludes the handsome actor. Aamir Dalvi who played the full-of-life character of Kabir in Imagine's Jyoti has been finalised to essay the role of one of the male leads. eality show, Life Bina Wife, an Indian adaptation of the Canadian show, The Week The Women Went, is replacing MasterChef India in Saturday-Sunday 9 pm slot. The channel, along with BBC Worldwide Entertainment, has started working on the show, which is apparently being shot in Pune and will have a limited 16-episode run. 'Life Bina Wife' will be anchored by our very own Cyrus Sahukar and Mini Mathur. It will bring 10 couples including celebrity couples who will be contesting in the competition. As the name suggests 'Life Bina Wife' it will showcase couples where the male counterpart needs to act as a homemaker in the absence of his wife. The husbands are required to deal with daily life household troubles without their wives. Their work will include cooking for their kids, dish washing, taking care of cleanliness, ironing the clothes; that means all kinds of household tasks with which wives deal everyday.

fter a gap of three years, Shah Rukh Khan will return to television. SRK will be hosting Zor Ka Jhatka, the Indian version of Wipeout, an American show, on Imagine Dil Se. The pre-production of the show has already begun and the actor is now shooting for the promo. Since Wipeout's format is water-based adventure sports, contestants will be flying to Argentina to shoot for it. "This show has been aired in 22 countries and all episodes have been shot in Argentina," informs an insider. "Almost all countries have gone into two or three seasons." Talking about the show Shahrukh says, "I am very excited and am looking forward to hosting the show. It is going to be a roller

coaster ride for the audience and participants too, as the show will bring back the bedroom entertainment for the family." Ajay Devgn who is walking behind her runs across to ask her if she's okay. "It's auspicious. I am sure the film (Toonpur Ka Superrhero) will do well now," says Kajol laughing out loud. Kajol is the typical happy-go-lucky girl while Devgn is quite close to his intense and brooding on-screen appearance. Together, they make for a doting couple. The actress, who gave birth to their second child Yug three months ago, is yet to shed her pregnancy weight, but still looks stunning in a black kurta. The actor couple also are proud parents to Nysa (7). Devgn is sporting a moustache, his look for his forthcoming Rascals, directed by David Dhawan. Devgn and Kajol are back on the silver screen together after three years. Their last film together was Devgn's directorial debut U, Me Aur Hum

"Well, we got married," says Kajol, candidly. "We have just become more comfortable. We don't have to explain things to each other," says Devgn. Both Devgn and Kajol have had a host of releases this year, but Toonpur is Kajol's last film the audience will be seeing for some time. "It is very difficult to handle two kids. I think they should pay me for even promoting the film," laughs Kajol. Kajol sets her priorities right. "Right now, my children are everything to me. May be I will do a film after five years. We can talk about my comeback then," she laughs. Devgn, one of the most prolific actors in the industry, however, takes a different stand. he comic character of Tees Maar Khan in Indian folklore is a young man who fools people into believing that he is the bravest lad around and lands a job in the royal court. It was on this street smart and endearing "superhero" of the Manoj Chitra Katha that Shirish Kunder modelled the conman in Farah Khan-directed Tees Maar Khan. Currently, the film, which stars Akshay Kumar in the title role, is one of the most awaited releases of the year. "The character of Tees Maar Khan has been adapted from the comic series but otherwise, he is a conman like Bollywood has never had before," assures Kunder, the scriptwriter and producer of the film. However, Tees Maar Khan isn't the only conman who will attempt to enthral Indian audience. Veteran actor Dharmendra, with sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, has a few tricks up his sleeve in Yamla Pagla Deewana. Abbas and Mustan Burmawalla have already announced Players, the Indian remake of the Hollywood classic The Italian Job, and Yash Raj Films will begin working on the next instalment of their Dhoom franchise in 2011. Though Bollywood's timeline is dotted with some popular and acclaimed heist films - Victoria No 203, Shalimar, Aankhein, Bluffmaster and Badmaash Company - the genre is not one that filmmakers readily take on. Kunder attributes this apprehension to a lack of smart writing in January 2011 I 14 I KonnecTV

the industry. "It takes effort and time to write a heist film because like in a mystery, all loose ends have to tie up together," he explains. "The one element essential to a good heist film is the central con - it should make you go 'Wow!'," avers Sanjay Gadhvi, who directed both Dhoom and Dhoom 2. "Take, for example,

the way Thomas Crown Affair ended, with almost everyone in the art gallery wearing a bowler hat to camouflage Pierce Brosnan as he restores the stolen painting to its place." While the smarter writing skills available in India today may be giving the genre a boost, comparisons with Hollywood heist films are inevitable.

Films like the Ocean's series make Indian heist films look amateur. Indian filmmakers often attempt to camouflage weak cons with gloss. "Why do you need style?" says Rohan Sippy who made the acclaimed Bluffmaster, "Indian heist in the early days didn't have style or humour but films like Shalimar were highly successful and are classics today because of their concept and script." But Samir Karnik, who is in the post-production of YPD, asserts that Indian con films cannot be compared with Hollywood. "Bollywood rarely witnesses an out-and-out heist film. It is mostly masked in drama as that is what the Indian audience come to the theatres for. In YPD too, the story of a father and his relationship with his sons takes centre stage, while cons are mere sub-plots. It's the case with most successful con films such as Bunty Aur Babli and Jewel Thief," adds Gadhvi. "It has to entertain with emotions and make the audience laugh," adds Kunder, who hopes to develop a TMK franchise and has already started work on the sequel. "Once the audience connects with the central character, they will return to watch him again." Abbas-Mustan, who are currently occupied with the pre-production work for the Indian remake of The Italian Job, disagree with Karnik. The director duo points out that contrary to popular belief, Race - a high-voltage thriller that was low on drama - did do well at the box office. "If you have smart content that can keep you on the edge of the seat, with ample style, the audience will watch it," points out Abbas Burmawalla, adding, "Yes, the human connect is important, but the drama isn't."

or his 75th birthday, Dharmendra could not have asked for anything as fulfilling as a new film with his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol. That too in his 50th year in Bollywood. But God's been kind, and the Deols have "Yamla Pagla Deewana" lined up for release on January 14. Full of comedy, action and romance, the film begins in Canada, then travels to Benaras and eventually makes its way to Punjab, showcasing the great Indian joint family along the way. It's a Top Angle Productions film, produced by Nitin Manmohan and Samir Karnik, and directed by Samir himself. Dharmendra is excited, naturally. "After 50, they say the reel of life goes faster, but I am now a 75-year-old boy," he exclaimed, having breakfast with stuffed paranthas with butter churned on their farm in Lonavala and a tall glass of

lassi. This is what Dharmendra has every morning, not just on his birthday. He talked, Sunny and Bobby and everybody listened. "Fifty years have gone by just like that," he started, "but I've had exceptional luck. I was a school teacher's son who wanted to be an actor simply because it is human nature to want to be loved, liked and admired. I just wanted a Fiat car, a flat, and to be seen in film posters. Today, fans call me from Tunisia and Nigeria!" Age has been kind to him. Not just in body, but also in mind. At 75, he retains the hearty enthusiasm with which he started off this 50-year journey in Bollywood; a young man boarding the Frontier Mail from his Sanahwal village in Ludhiana to come to Bombay and audition for Filmfare's talent hunt, and then going on to become a real hero in a glam world where actors compete against action stars. Dharmendra is somewhat disillusioned with the film industry today, though. "It is a mandi," he grumbled, "and actors are like hawkers." His heart tells him not to do this kind of work. In 2007, they made "Apne", an emotional film with a sports background. "People liked it," he recalled, "but this is more like a true story, it has punches of emotion that will bring tears to people's eyes... This is my experience of 50 years talking." Working with his sons has helped to break that wall that exists between fathers and sons. "I can't say anything negative about them," Dharmendra admitted, "they are good boys, hard-working actors, but Bobby is an escapist, Sunny is an introvert, we feel for each other, but when we sit together... we don't speak. Though rumour mills had it that she may have been seeing upcoming film-maker Sahil Sangha since the two were spotted together at actor Shilpa Shetty's Diwali party earlier this year, it is only now that the actor has openly admitted to being in a relationship. "Yes, I am in a relationship and seeing Sahil," she says. If her beau's name doesn't ring a bell, he was the assistant director for the hit 2007 film, Salaam-e-Ishq. indi films have had item songs for many decades now. Helen, the original item girl, cast many a spell with her performances on songs like "Mera Naam Chin-Chin Choo" from "Howrah Bridge", "Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja" from "Caravan", "Mehbooba Mehbooba" from "Sholay" and "Yeh Mera Dil" from "Don" among others. When Helen danced, the story froze and all that mattered was the inimitable way in which the cabaret queen grooved. Many actors experimented with item numbers. While those like Bindu and Aruna Irani were smaller stars, others like Zeenat Aman and the late Parveen Babi had trysts with real stardom. Song and dance minus or plus storytelling equals fun has been the formula on which the item numbers are based. Madhuri Dixit danced to several such songs including "Ek Do Teen" from "Tezaab", "Dhak Dhak" from "Beta", and the controversial "Choli Ke Peechhe" from "Khalnayak" among others. That Madhuri won her way into millions of hearts with these songs should be little surprising. Such has been the popularity of item numbers that even an actor like Shah Rukh Khan took a plunge into the item world with "Kaal" and "Om Shanti Om". Not to forget, SRK and Hrithik Roshan did two versions of an item track in "Krazzy 4". Quick to come up with novel expressions, some film lovers called them 'item boys'! Malaika Arora Khan, with tracks like "Chaiyya Chaiyya" (with SRK) and "Munni Badnaam Hui", is one of those performers whose main focus is on item songs. But she does face very stiff competition from time to time; for instance, when today's superstar Katrina Kaif chose to present herself as Sheila, it lead to a clash for the crown of biggest modern-day item number between the two.

While actor Joy Sengupta says that classic item songs like "Piya Tu", "Mehbooba Mehbooba" and "Yamma Yamma" will live on forever, Mahima Choudhary's favourites are "Choli Ke Peeche" and "Piya Tu". "The way Helen danced on "Piya Tu" was great, it had the perfect mix of naughtiness and innocence." Singer Shibani Kashyap says, ""Beedi" and "Kajra Re" have survived the longest in recent times but. my all-time favourites are "Yeh Mera Dil" and "Piya Tu". I think only Malaika's moves in "Mahi Ve", "Chaiyya Chaiyya" and "Munni Badnaam Hui" can compete with her." Of course, when asked direct questions about each other, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra - who bonded during "Aitraaz" and fell out over Shahid Kapoor - normally say innocuous things like, "Oh, we have no issues with each other. And these came to the fore recently when Kareena bared her fans on "Koffee With Karan" and said, 'I wonder where Priyanka got her accent from'. hen Shah Rukh Khan was doing Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, he was clearly told not to look towards Dilip Kumar. And yet there were shades of the thespian in SRK's performance that couldn't be missed. That is not to take away from SRK's act, but it's a fact nevertheless. We cannot blame him. Many say he bears a close resemblance to Dilip Kumar. Why, even Saira Banu had once said, "If Yusuf Saab and I had a son, he'd be like Shah Rukh." Other actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, have constantly searched the amazing thespian's personality traits to add colour to their performances. Forty years ago, Rajesh Khanna candidly and proudly admitted that his personality and performance in Narendra Bedi's Bandhan were modelled on Dilip Kumar in Ganga Jumna. That was a time when stars were proud to model their performances on their illustrious predecessors. No longer. Though in Guzaarish, Aishwarya's role of the imperturbable and uncompromising nurse who gives away nothing of her inner turmoil as she tends to the ailing hero, is clearly modelled on Rekha's dark, mysterious look. Aishwarya denies any likeness. Rekha, incidentally has been linked to Aishwarya's father-inlaw and superstar Amitabh Bachchan in the past. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, however, admits Aishwarya's looks and personality are modelled on Rekha. The perfectionist director found an ideal reference point in Rekha's performances and personality. Says Sanjay, "Rekha always holds back. Aishwarya's character in Guzaarish is like the ocean. On the surface, everything has to appear calm. But underneath there are many storms brewing. This was Aishwarya's most challenging role to date. She had to convey her character's deeply troubled soul without using the props that usually define a character. Her face had to register no overt emotions. It had to be all internalised. Rekhaji, I think, is very skilled at holding back her emotions. I wanted a less-is-more performance from Aishwarya, like Rekhaji's." Says Bhansali, "I'm very keen to show Guzaarish to Rekha. I want to know if she sees the likeness in Aishwarya to her personality." Bhansali's passion for the screen divas has always taken his contemporary heroines back to another era. In Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, the director modelled Aishwarya's look in the second-half on Vyjanthimala in Sangam. In Saawariya, Sonam Kapoor's look and costumes were unabashedly borrowed from Waheeda Rehman in Guru Dutt's Pyasa, with oodles of cleavage thrown in for good measure. When Sonam was shooting with Waheeda Rehman for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi 6, the younger actress told the legend about the Saawariya look. Waheeda's advice to Sonam was to never model herself on any other actor. Be yourself, she said. This is easier said than done. Often, filmmakers deliberately draw attention to a senior star's similarity to a star. Hema Malini and Raakhee were told to "be" like Vyjanthimala and Sharmila Tagore respectively in their initial films. Recalls Hemaji, "In my first film Sapnon Ka Saudagar, I was told by the producer and director that I had to act and dance like Vyjanthimala. Band Baaja Baaraat parks its plot within the 'opposites attract' blueprint, a theme common to numerous rom-coms. These two characters are poles apart, diametrically opposite and therefore mismatched. But they end up falling in love with each other. Band Baaja Baaraat works on every level. The writing [screenplay: Habib Faisal] is crisp, the execution of the material [director: Maneesh Sharma] is worthy and the lead actors [Anushka, Ranveer] steer the film to the destination smoothly. Of course, there are minor hiccups halfway through the film, but the fact remains that Band Baaja Baaraat is, without doubt, one of the most appealing films to come out of the production house. Band Baaja Baaraat is honest, fresh, youthful and extremely entertaining. Recommended! The unique plot keeps you on toes all through the first hour. The writing is oven fresh and the situations, thoroughly absorbing. Even in its most flaccid and drooping moments, what saves the film from derailing is the chemistry between the lead pair.

apoor has been a goodwill ambassador for the NGO Plan India for three years, part of an attempt to make philanthropy his life's priority. "I want to reach a level of spiritual alertness where I forget everything else and am fully devoted to this," he says. It's unlikely to be a problem for the actor-producer - he's already donated his entire fee from the film Slumdog Millionaire to the NGO. That doesn't mean, however, that Kapoor has lost interest in movies. In fact, he seems to be expanding his boundaries - after roles in Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire and the popular US TV series, 24, he has just landed a part in the Tom Cruise film, Mission Impossible 4 (MI:4). So do we now refer to him as an international actor? Kapoor laughs. "I would prefer to be known as an Indian actor who has been lucky to work in Hollywood," he says. "Whatever I have learnt has been through experience and the people I have worked with. So I consider myself fortunate to have had these breaks in international projects." In MI:4, Kapoor plays a villain, a role most Indian stars dislike. It doesn't bother him. "More than a role, I prefer to talk about performance," he says. "In India, people are still not used to taking cameos seriously. For me, a good role is about good acting. Beyond that I'm not worried." He's used to taking chances - his role in Slumdog Millionaire as a nasty man who aims to deprive a boy of his rightful winnings was hardly heroic. "But I stand by my beliefs and usually I am proved right," he says. "When I was on the threshold of becoming a star, people warned me against getting married and ruining my career. But I had made a commitment to the woman I loved. We have now been together for 38 years, and my career flourished after marriage." That his children are following him into the industry is a surprise for the 50-yearold. "Long ago, I had told them that they were free to do whatever they wanted to do," he says. "So I was surprised by their choices. My wife Sunita was happy with just one celebrity at home. But I guess my genes are stronger than hers!" While Sonam is an actress, Kapoor's younger daughter Rhea is into filmmaking and Harshvardhan, the youngest, wants to write. "When Sanjay Leela Bhansali told me he wanted Sonam in Saawariya, I said it was her choice," says Kapoor. "Rhea, on the other hand, was always keen on making films. CHICKEN AND SPINACH CASSEROLE Marinated boneless chicken cooked with spinach is an indeed very nutritious Preparation Time : 1 hour Cooking Time : 15-20 minutes Servings : 4

INGREDIENTS Boneless chicken breasts 4 Spinach, blanched and chopped 2 bunch Salt to taste Black pepper powder 1 teaspoon Oregano 1/2 teaspoon Vinegar 1 teaspoon Mustard paste 1/4 teaspoon Sugar 1/4 teaspoon Oil 2 tablespoons Rice, soaked 1/4 cup Milk 1/2 cup Cheese, grated 1/2 cup Onion , chopped 1 small

Bread crumbs 1/4 cup Butter 2 tablespoons

METHOD Preheat oven to 250 C. Mix together salt, black pepper powder, oregano, vinegar, mustard paste and sugar and apply to the chicken and set aside for an hour preferably in the refrigerator. Heat oil in a pan and sautÈ chicken breasts until both sides are golden brown. Mix together spinach, rice, milk, half the cheese, onion and salt in large bowl. Stir well. Spread this mixture at the bottom of a baking dish. Place chicken on top of spinach mixture. Combine breadcrumbs, butter and remaining cheese in small bowl and sprinkle this mixture evenly over the chicken. Cover casserole with aluminum foil. Bake in preheated oven at 250 C for fifteen minutes. Remove cover and continue baking for five minutes or until spinach mixture is set and chicken is no longer pink in the center. Serve hot.

LEMON GARLIC CHICKEN BURGER Chicken burger with the special flavor of lemon and garlic in it. Preparation Time : 15-20 minutes Cooking Time : 10-15 minutes Servings : 4

INGREDIENTS Chicken mince 500 grams Garlic, crushed 4-5 cloves Thai chilli sauce 2 tablespoons Lemon rind , grated 1 tablespoon Lemon juice 4 teaspoons Olive oil 4 tablespoons Onions, halved 1 medium Buns 4 Lettuce leaves 4

METHOD Combine chicken mince, crushed garlic, one and a half tablespoons Thai chilli sauce, lemon rind and two teaspoons lemon juice in a bowl. Transfer into a mixer jar and grind till smooth. Divide into four portions. Heat two tablespoons oil in a non stick grill pan. With wet hands take each portion of the chicken mixture and shape into a patty. Place it in the pan and grill, turning sides once, till both the sides are evenly cooked and golden. Slice the halved onion horizontally. Heat the remaining oil in a non stick pan, add the onion and sautÈ till lightly coloured. Add the remaining Thai chilli sauce and the remaining lemon juice and sautÈ for half a second. Transfer into a bowl. Halve the burger buns horizontally and warm them on a heated pan till lightly crisp. Place them on the work top. Place lettuce leaves over one half. Dribble a little of the onion chutney over it and place the chicken patty on it. Cover with the second half and serve immediately with the remaining onion chutney.
