his story is the soul of Ramayan, placed in the backdrop of Ayodhya, where a 20 year old girl Reet idolises Lord Ram. Sammanpur is a small town, a few kilometres from Ayodhya, in which a landlord Thakur Veer Pratap Singh is worshipped as a father figure like Raja Dashrath. Unlike Thakur Saheb, his sons Kunwar Kuldeep and Rajveer are a reflection of today's Ravan. Kunwar Kuldeep believes that power and money are synonyms. Petrol pump, cable network, Hero Honda agency, tractor agency, Maruti car agency, railway contracts, everything is being controlled by him. He has political ambitions. Younger brother Rajveer plans to set up medical and dental colleges by demolishing the very first rice mill constructed by his own father, who is emotionally attached to it. Reet the youngest daughter of Thakur sahib learns her first lesson of Ramayan, where Thakur sahib tells her that Lord Rama obeyed his father and went to the jungle for 14 years. From the age of 7 Reet obeys every wish of her father. Emotionally devastated and completely let down by his sons' deeds, Thakur sahib passes away, leaving behind a death wish. He snatches the right to light his pyre from his sons and gives this authority to Reet. Reet accepts her father's last wish, but this leads to warlike situation in the family. The story is how three vulnerable and weak women -Reet and her bhabis - caged in the old haveli fight the mighty and powerful men of new haveli. They set their evil Lanka on fire and win the battle.

Going by my experience post marriage, I have listed down some tips for you, dear readers, on ways you can deal with your spouse when he/she is upset with you. Make sure you always keep his/her family and friends happy. Avoid problems with your spouse's relatives. Avoid putting them in a position where he/she has to choose between you and the family. Make them happy: Always ensure that you do your best to keep your spouse happy. Do not try to do anything that will cause them pain or will end up hurting them because eventually it is your relationship that will bear the brunt of it all. Be the first to break the ice: There should be no egos in a marriage. If you know it's your fault, then make the first move and apologise before the situation gets out of hand. Likewise, if the other person is at fault, do try to reason it out with them and talk it out so that the situation is resolved amicably. Appreciate the work he/she does: Appreciating your spouse's work is important. Make sure you acknowledge his/her efforts, be it at home or work - It could be in the form of a simple praise for the food that is well cooked, or a surprise gift for the promotion he/she received at work. These small gestures can go a long way in making a happy marriage. Forgive: Don't hold any grudges after an argument/fight. Don't be resentful, as it can drive people apart. The story begins with Kokilaben's search for the perfect bahu for her son Aham, an egomaniacal and workaholic who doesn't see beyond his mother and will get nothing come in his way to success. he cute host R. Madhavan couldn't flatter the two television female stars the way he woos the ladies in his movies. Instead he was left in a state of awkwardness by two popular faces Suhana aka Ragini Khanna and Laali aka Ratan Rajput who recently bumped on the sets of Imagine TV to play Big Money with him. Both of them tried to flatter the host in their own character styles. Where Ratan on one hand tried to flirt with Maddy in her Bihari accent, then on the other side Ragini too wasn't behind in pursuing and made him shy by dancing with him. But when the uncle finds out about Chhaya's past, they reject her. This news kills her dad, and Chhaya re-locates to live with her friend, Leela Lal, who lives a middle-class lifestyle with her husband, Murari, and her mother-inlaw, who is very superstitious and never lets Leela out of her sight. Murari and Leela introduce her to Prakash, an airline pilot, and both eventually fall in love. When Prakash takes her with him to meet his mom, Chhaya finds out that she is the same woman who rejected her. Prakash manages to convince her to marry him and she does. Will Chhaya's presence continue to cause problems in this household also?

he story is based on fantasy but Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra are brilliant in their respective roles. Abhishek as Aditya used to get nightmares. Whenever he woke up from sleep there used to be a magical blue rose petal present before him. An evil sorcerer, Riz Raizada wanted to get hold of the secret which Drona had. She took him to his place of birth that was the ancient city of Pratapgarh to remind him about his background where his mother Jayati Debi lived. She could answer all the questions which Drona never remembered but required to know about his past life. Riz Raizada caught hold of him and the confrontation with the evil powers started. The remedies which Drona used to see in his dreams helped him to face the odds and win over the challenging circumstances.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh T
he story of Bhagat Singh has been presented on celluloid before but what makes Rajkumar Santoshi's film special is the way the martyr's life is depicted on the big screen. The film begins with the scene in which three bodies (of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru) are being secretly taken out of the prison. The movie then goes in flashback and relates the chronology of events that led to Bhagat Singh's transition from a callow youth to the legendary freedom fighter. The story concludes with his martyrdom. Santoshi convincingly creates the pre-independence ambience by capturing the minutest detail on the camera. Particularly moving are the sequences of Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the courtroom scenes (after Bhagat Singh is arrested) in the second half. Bhagat Singh's courtroom dialogues show that he was not just an ordinary freedom fighter but a well-educated man, who had a fluent command over English. The climax of the film is quite emotional and brings tears to the viewer's eye.

urukshetra is the story of a brawny police officer, who vows to bring a minister's delinquent son to book. Sanjay Dutt plays the ideal cop Prithvi Raj Singh. His wife Anjali (Mahima Chowdhary) and his sister Arti are his be-all and end-all. His fearlessness and bravery leaves an indelible mark even on an underworld don's psyche. The baddie begins to admire him and is literally at his beck and call. The idea of a don admiring a cop after taking a sound beating from him is a bit hard to swallow. Chief Minister Babu Rao Deshmukh's son Amber, along with his friend Rohit, rapes a girl named Gita. The eternal good-doer ACP again lifts his baton and vows to punish the culprits. The story takes a political turn with the opposition leader Sambhaji Yadav too deciding to wage his personal battle against the chief minister. With the corrupt CM on one side and the ACP, Iqbal and Sambhaji Yadav on the other the screen turns into a battleground, and thus begins the Kurukshetra. August 2010 I 9 I KonnecTV

tunts and action sequences in Bollywood are no longer the men's territory; B-town beauties are giving some kick-ass competition to their male counterparts Bollywood beauties are getting a lot of action these days. Don't get us wrong - all we mean is that dainty, pretty leading ladies are doing more than act as the damsels in distress in action movies. They're now doing a lot of the fighting too. And it's not just action movies. Actresses, just like actors, are now boasting of having done their own stunts in films ranging from comedies to dramas. Leading the pack is Priyanka Chopra, who kicked some serious ass in Don opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Later, she followed it up with her bodyguard act in the movie Drona, wherein she displayed some cool Sikh martial art moves from a form called Gatka. The leggy lass, who replaced Akshay Kumar as the host of the action-packed TV show Khatron Ke Khiladi, will soon be seen in Farhan Akhtar's Don 2, where she is rumoured to be doing more action sequences. Deepika Padukone is another actress who is a self-confessed action freak. The former badminton player did some daredevil stunts in Chandni Chowk To China. The actress has also learnt scuba diving for her upcoming film Lafangey Parindey, in which she's said to play the role of a tomboy. Deepika will be seen wearing leather jackets, jumping high walls, doing somersaults and riding bikes as well in the movie.

In fact, the dimpled beauty has taken her love for action a step further by signing another action flick, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se, where she will be seen doing some serious stunts - wearing a saree! Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made everyone's jaws drop with her super skinny figure and a sun-kissed look in Dhoom 2. After doing a few small action sequences in that movie, Ash took to action again in Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar, for which she apparently learnt sword fighting and managed to master it in a blinker. In her Hollywood flick The Last Legion, where she played the role of a Byzantine warrior, she performed some daring action stunts. And most recently, in Raavan, she matched steps with hubby Abhishek by doing all her stunts herself. Kareena Kapoor, who made headlines last year for her size-zero figure, is set to turn toughie with a full-on action role in Agent Vinod opposite beau Saif Ali Khan. Katrina Kaif will also be seen performing some cool stunts in her upcoming movie Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara, for which she will learn dirt biking. Last year saw hot bod Lara Dutta turn action heroine for the thriller Blue and perform stunts 70 feet under water with sharks. Shruti Hassan also displayed her adventurous side last year in her first Hindi film, Luck, where she was seen doing everything from parachuting to escaping killer sharks underwater and being tied to a speeding engine. hen actor Akshay Kumar visited ailing cartoonist RK Laxman in hospital, little did he know that his photo-op would cause an outrage among fans and critics. The actor, whose character in his latest film Khatta Meetha is based on Laxman's iconic `Common Man', visited 86-year-old Laxman to "get blessings" for the film. "I am repulsed to see what length Bollywood goes to promote a film," tweeted VJ Nikhil Chinapa. "Need innovative ideas 2 promote films. But Akshay grinning like a jackass at RK Laxman's hospital bed is a new low," posted film critic Rajeev Masand. Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt felt Kumar may have a crossed the line, but said, "Who am I to judge his marketing strategy when I myself used Parveen Babi's tapes to promote Wo Lamhe..." However, Akshay defends himself by saying, "I was invited by Mr Laxman's family, as they thought it would be nice to meet the man that is bringing to life his legendary comic. And anyone who sees my smile by his bedside in any other way than love has a cold heart!" The debate has also led to a war of words between Amitabh Bachchan and Rajeev Masand. "Rajeev! Your fraternity will never pull you up for calling Akshay a `jackass'." To this, Masand retorted, "However controversial my choice of words, it is me taking a `stand', Sir. Expressing my `opinion'. Two words your fraternity seems largely unfamiliar with."

fter Sonam, actor Anil Kapoor's younger daughter Rhea Kapoor has entered Bollywood. And, like Sonam, she minces no words while addressing controversies. Rumours have been doing the rounds that Rhea, who's produced Sonam-starrer Aisha, had creative differences with director Rajshree Ojha. Rhea rubbishes the claim, saying, "There is no rift between us... Do people want me to sit in her lap or something? We have a professional relationship... we are not best of friends. I can't be as close to her as I'm to Sonam because we're sisters." Sonam Kapoor was recently quoted as saying that "Bollywood was never a man's world", a remark that came just a day after her dad said he was happy his daughters had made it big in a man's world. Was she trying to contradict her father? "If I kept a track of all interviews my father gives, I'd faint in one corner. I personally feel that women generate more curiosity. Between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Jolie is more photographed and written about." Grapevine has it that the actress is dating Karan Boolani, the associate director of Aisha. The two were also spotted together at the special screening of I Hate Luv Storys. Ask her about it and Rhea snaps back, "Who are you dating?" The 23-year-old admits it was difficult becoming a producer at 21. "Dad was treating this one as a special film. He asked me to produce it and I said okay, thinking he'd be there to guide me. But, he went abroad for his work, so I had to do everything. I was the youngest person on the set," she says. About her father, she says, "My father is v e r y spaced out. He hangs out with some of m y friends.

Ever since SRK met Columbian singer Shakira, he hasn't stopped talking, or at least tweeting, about her. The Khans met Shakira in South Africa when they went to catch the finals and semi-finals of FIFA World Cup. "Gorgeous gracious & absolutely heart-warming Shakira. was so nice to the kids we r fans for life (sic)," wrote Shah Rukh on Twitter. "Will upload family pic with her. she was so humble & so real. that's why she is such a rockstar. said my name with a beautiful accent too," he further wrote. It didn't end there! fter declining lead roles in Kites and Veer, Bruna Abdullah made her Bollywood splash with a cameo in Punit Malhotra's I Hate Luv Storys (IHLS). Not the most intelligent choice for a debut, yet she's not regretting anything. "I have chickened out of Bollywood many times. I liked Kites the script and Anurag's (Basu) idea. Besides, I'm a Hrithik fan. But what I saw in the film was slightly different. And when it was offered to me, I wasn't sure of Bollywood. I never thought I'd do a film. It's a different industry with great responsibilities. I was not confident about movies. I didn't think I could do it till Punit called. I was surprised as I had stopped going for auditions," says the girl from Brazil.
The former VJ was also offered Zarine Khan's role in Veer at a time when it was rumoured that Salman Khan was 'affectionate' towards her. "I was unsure of fitting into the period role," says Bruna. So, what made her consider the cameo in IHLS? "I wanted to work with a young team and when I met Punit, who was dressed in sneakers and ripped jeans, I felt very comfortable. I can't tell you how happy I am with the positive response to my role. I had Imran as my co-star and Sonam, whom I've known for three years through my boyfriend, Sunny Sarang. I wanted to do something I was sure about. I did the auditions in English first. My character, Giselle, needed to be sexy, loud, and funny, but I'm quite shy.

nurag Kashyap has put his social networking skills to good use. He organised the screening of a semi-porn film by Kanti Shah called Angoor, for teenagers at his office. This Cgrade film plays a pivotal role in Anurag's film Udaan; it changes the lead character Rohan's (Rajat Barmecha) life forever. When Anurag announced this screening on a social networking site, surprisingly, over 200 teenagers expressed interest in it. Our source said, "Rajat's character in the film, Rohan, gets caught by his teacher and gets expelled from school, when he is watching Angoor. He faces a lot of turmoil after this. Since it is an important scene in the film, producer Anurag Kashyap decided to highlight it by arranging for a special screening of Angoor for teenagers, with Rajat Barmecha and the director of Udaan, Vikramaditya Motwane present. As Angoor is not available on the internet, a special screening was organised. And since most of the kids were under the age of 18, the screening was more of an underground one at Anurag's office. Around 50 teenagers turned up to watch it." Shikha Kapoor, senior VP, marketing, of the production house, said, "I think this is the base where the movie starts and we thought it was a nice marketing idea. You speak Marathi as well as Punjabi and have been staying in Mumbai for 35 years. Are you still a 'Delhiite'? Of course. It's my hometown, where I was born, where I got everything, where I got my life, where my family comes from... Each and every road in this city has some memory for me. If we take a right turn from here (Sardar Patel Marg), there's a big ground where we used to play cricket. So, Lal Qila ho ya India Gate, there are so many memories for me. Purani Dilli ho ya Nayi Dilli, Lajpat Nagar ho ya Lajpat Rai market, they all have memories for me. I was too small when I left the city to really think about the change I was undergoing, but my most important memory is of going to Sheesh Ganj Gurudwara in Chandni Chowk. But you don't come back anymore as Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, but as Akshay Kumar. Is that difficult? No. Whatever I have is because of Him. Whatever I got is from Sheesh Ganj only. I go quietly to the gurudwara. No one knows about it. I wear a cap. If you make a hue and cry about it, obviously you cannot go. I've been to the Golden Temple without anyone knowing about it. You don't have to make any noise. Keep your security along and you can manage it. How easy is it to strike a balance between being a star and being a normal person? It all depends on how you tackle it. There's not much difficulty, if you keep yourself grounded. There's no difficulty if you keep yourself in contact with your roots, your friends, with your old things that you own in life. Since you've been lauded for your good comic timing, are you now inclined towards roles of this particular genre? Comedy is difficult. It's not a natural thing. To recognise the pulse of the audience is difficult; to make them laugh at an ordinary situation as if it were an There's a saying that I've always followed. To hear it and to extraordinary situation is a very very difficult task. You can make them cry, follow it is a big difference, but I've done so. The biggest you can put glycerine in your own lesson to survive in this industry is - mind your own business eyes... but to make people laugh is one hell of a job. How do you take a break from this 'hell of a job'? I'm quiet... I'm an introvert in my personal life. Whenever I get a break, I take my son and wife and we go trekking, rafting... we go to Disneyworld. Or, we simply go to our favourite place, Goa. Your plans for becoming the 'Badshah' of Bollywood - as was reported when Chandni Chowk To China released - are still on? I've never said these words. I have only said one thing - I personally consider that Mr Amitabh Bachchan is one of our biggest stars today. Also, I have never had any gameplan. When I came into this line, I had no plans. I just landed in the industry. Then I did one film and I got a second film. I never thought that I'll get films for 20 years. Then, I never thought I'd be a producer, but I became one. Whatever comes by nature, by God's will, whatever is written in my destiny is what I will get. Has destiny brought you here, or did you also look for a mentor? I have my godfather, Pramod Chakravortyji. He's always there for me. Ek mentor aaj bhi bahut zaroori hai... koi na koi aisa insaan mil jaye jo ek push de‌ bahut zaroori hota hai... bina woh push ke, it becomes difficult. Every actor's son has their father pushing them. That push is essential, whether it's them or anyone else. Is there any thumb rule that you've followed? There's a saying that I've always followed. To hear it and to follow it is a big difference, but I've done so. The biggest lesson to survive in this industry is mind your own business. That's what I've done and that's how I've survived. We are actors and exposed to public life. But even as a star, we must learn to mind our own business. That's what helps.

Neil's stunt Last October, when Neil Nitin Mukesh was driving down Marine Drive, an excited fan attempted a quick spin on his bike around Neil's Audi Q7. The biker lost control and the bike skidded straight into Neil's car, angering the actor. Neil pulled the same stunt in Lafangey Parindey. He admits that his character has the same free spirit and careless dare-devilry of that biker boy. Neil has performed all the stunts on his own, albeit after thorough training from action director Sham Kaushal. "Even then, I knew that an accident could happen," Neil points out. The mishap occurred when he was imitating Leonardo DiCaprio's Titaniclike pose atop a speeding bike, with another bike racing parallel. "My bike went over a manhole, and I lost my balance. But I quickly managed to jump back on and wasn't seriously hurt," he says. Friend for life Deepika Padukone has found a friend for life in Neil Nitin Mukesh. Neil once went out of his way to do her make-up personally, which was somewhat different, required for an accident scene. "I think I have made a friend for life and I think that's what I cherished the most because he is a wonderful human being and that comes across on screen. We got along really well," said Deepika. "There is an accident scene, where I need a different kind of make-up and he is trained in it so he told dada (director Pradeep Sarkar) that he will do my make-up and he did. Another day where I was doing, not exactly an action sequence, but lot of cable work involved, he choreographed the entire act. So I think in every way he was there for me," Deepika said in an interview. Neil used to be around Deepika, even on his off days. "I can confidently say that he has been the most supportive and encouraging co-star, with whom I have worked so far. Even on days when he was not required, he would be there," said Deepika. Deepika believes that regardless of his experience in the industry, Neil has every quality of being a director. "I think he is ready to direct. We keep thinking that he is new, we saw him in three-four films, but I think in terms of experience and his knowledge where cinema is concerned, I think he is technically very sound and he is ready to direct a film," said Deepika. This is Sarkar's second film under the YRF banner. He previously directed Abhishek Bachchan-Rani Mukherjee starrer Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, which did not do well at the box office. In most cases high blood pressure is due to a combination of ageing, family history (genetics) and an unhealthy lifestyle. It may also be associated with medications you are taking or other diseases such as diabetes or coronary artery disease. What can contribute to high blood pressure? Age - As you get older you are more likely to get high blood pressure as your arteries harden (atherosclerosis), you become less active, your kidneys become less efficient and hormone levels change, for example, during menopause. Family history - You may have a family history of diabetes, high cholesterol levels, stroke or other conditions that affect blood pressure. If a close relative has high blood pressure you are more likely to develop it too. Too much alcohol - Drinking too much alcohol increases the likelihood of you developing hypertension. Even moderate amounts of alcohol may raise your blood pressure level. Smoking - Nicotine and carbon dioxide from smoking put you heart under strain. Smoking has an immediate effect on both your heart rate and blood pressure. After years of smoking your arteries start to clog up and your lungs become permanently damaged causing your heart to work overtime. Being overweight - The more overweight you become the more your blood pressure increases. Excess weight puts more strain on your heart and other organs. Overweight people may be more likely to have an unhealthy diet and be less active, both of which can lead to increased blood pressure. Medications - Taking certain medications, including some complementary medicines, can affect your blood pressure. These drugs include some contraceptives, oral decongestants, corticosteroids, non-steroidal anti inflammatory medications ginger preparations, St John's wort, liquorice and caffeine-containing products (e.g. Guarana, black tea, green tea and cola nut). onit Subramanian was seven years old and he was the tallest student in his class. It made him feel very proud. But when he re membered some of the things he used to do as a small kid, he felt a little shy. He wished his mother would not tell those stories to her friends again and again. Last week his mother's old school friend had come to see her. They were meeting after 10 years. Ronit was just back from school but his ears pricked up when he heard his mother say in that goofy tone, "You know what my Ronit used to do as a baby? He used to think everything and everyone was a part of the Subramanian family. So he would call the refrigerator 'frig Subramanian. And he would call the doggy that curled up on our doormat outside 'doggy Subramanian'". Ronit heard his mother's friend say, "cho chweeeet" and he ran out of the house - without any lunch. "I wish mother would not do these things," he said for the thousandth time. That evening his mother showed him the toys and games her friend had got for him. One stuffed dolphin and a game of blocks. Ronit got angry. "These are kids toys, kids toys and games. I am a big boy now. My hero is Spiderman. That's the toy I want for my birthday this year. Spiderman and the spray that makes the spider web." "Are you saying you no longer want your favourite stuffed toy - pepper the doggy?" Ronit's mother asked. "I don't want kids toys, I don't want kids toys and games any more. I am a BIG BOY," Ronit shouted. 'Okay, okay, we heard you," said his parents. A month later, Ronit's parents bought him a Spiderman kit for his eighth birthday. They bought him a Spiderman T-shirt and trousers, a shiny Spiderman toy and a glove with a spray bottle attached to it. "Wear the glove and then press the spray button. It will make a web pattern on the wall, Ronit's father said. Ronit, and even his father, were so excited with the spray that they used it again and again to see who could make a bigger web! There was even a Spiderman cake. After his friends left, Ronit opened up each gift package. Yesssss! He was a big boy now. He had got so many presents of toys and games and they were all for big boys. He especially like a Lego set that made a battery-powered robot, a snazzy car racing video game, and, best of all, a cool skateboard. Ronit went to sleep clutching the Spiderman. You see he had decided he no longer wanted his favourite stuffed toy, Pepper doggy. As soon as his head hit the pillow Ronit fell asleep. He now slept in a room of his own. A room with sunny yellow walls. But until yesterday, he had gone to sleep clutching Pepper doggy's ear. The softness of the toy always made him happy. But Spiderman was a metal toy. It was cold to touch. At night, as Ronit's blanket slipped down the bed, the cold metal of Spiderman poked him. Ronit dreamt that he was being chased by icy monsters who were out to freeze him into a statue. In his dream he shouted for Pepper. Not finding Pepper, woke up screaming crying. His mother heard him whimper and came rushing into his room. "I want Pepper. He is my friend. Big boys also have doggy friends" cried Ronit. Pepper has crept back into Ronit's bed. Every night, Ronit and Pepper have a new adventure. In his dreams, Ronit sees Pepper in a Spiderman outfit. Isn't that cool?

ebut director Abhishek Sharma's Tere Bin Laden is a brilliant satire on how ordinary citizens wanting to reside in America must either give up on their ambitions or resort to drastic measures. An ambitious young news reporter from Pakistan [Ali Zafar] is desperate to migrate to the U.S. in pursuit of the American dream. His repeated attempts to immigrate are shot down as his visa is always rejected. But when things couldn't look worse, he comes across an Osama Bin Laden lookalike. Ali then hatches a scheme to produce a fake Osama video and sell it to news channels as a breakthrough scoop. Unfortunately, there are serious ramifications as the White House gets involved and dispatches an overzealous secret agent on Ali's trail. Working as a reporter for Danka TV, Ali is sent to cover a rooster crowing competition, Ali meets a chicken farm owner called Noora (Pradhuman Singh), who is an almost perfect lookalike of the most wanted criminal Osama Bin Laden. Ali sees this as an opportunity to
make a quick buck, without visualising the farreaching consequences of his actions. What follows is a wicked comedy with an out-of-the-box concept that offers laughter unlimited. Imagine Osama Bin Laden running a poultry farm and also running behind chickens. Imagine Osama Bin Laden ogling at a makeup woman. Imagine Osama Bin Laden urinating outside a television studio, but ready to hand-over his business card to the person urinating on the other side. Imagine Osama becoming a business partner in a tacky salon. Ali Zafar is a star, no two opinions on that. The youngster is a package of good looks, super talent and the right screen presence. He charms his way into your heart with a superconfident performance and there can be no stopping him after this film. Pradhuman Singh is a replica of Osama Bin Laden and is in terrific form in the film. In fact, the film would've fallen flat had it not been for the actor enacting this part so convincingly. The dialect is authentic, with a peculiar mix of Punjabi and Hindi, liberally sprinkled with a lot of cuss words and swearing. Noora, the fake Osama with his chicken obsession, really sounds like a farmer who has been born and brought up in rural Pakistan. There is no attempt to cater to the NRIs, and sub-titles will probably fall flat on its face simply because the desi humour will be lost in translation.

Breaking-free of a rebellious spirit
P
oignant, unsettling and disturbing, Udaan is a brilliant take of an adolescent who has stepped into his teens and how he faces a tyrant father, a step brother he never knew existed and how he eventually breaks the shackles and frees himself from a world that's slowly suffocating him. Udaan mirrors the real life and the plotline is simple and uncomplicated. However, debutant director Vikramaditya Motwane remains faithful to the written material and handles the characters in the film with tremendous care, understanding and maturity. Rohan rebels in his own little ways, but has to concede to his father's demands. When he comes to know that the reason for his step-brother's hospitalisation is because of a beating from his father, he seethes with rage, but can do nothing. Yet, in the end you cannot hold a rebellious spirit down and Rohan breaks free from his shackles. Udaan will not only resonate with those who had a troubled childhood, but with anyone who has faced oppression, or ever nurtured dreams. The film is an analogy of life and of a nation's social ethos. The best thing about [most] first-time directors is their ability to narrate a new story without bowing down to market diktats. A number of sequences leave a stunning impact - the sequence between Rajat Barmecha and his step brother, when they meet for the first time; the one when Ronit Roy and Rajat Barmecha have a confrontation at the dinner table, when the talk veers to Rajat's plans for the future. Another sequence that catches attention is the heated argument between the brothers [Ronit, Ram Kapoor]. And, of course, the finale, the culmination to the film. Rajat Barmecha's breaking-free sequence, a redemption of sorts, is simply brilliant. If director Vikramaditya Motwane deserves distinction marks for narrating a slice of life film with aplomb, he along with co-writer Anurag Kashyap deserves the highest praise for handling the delicate and sensitive relationships lucidly. Every character in this film - there are four principal characters - is well etched and so identifiable. The two kids, Rajat Barmecha and Aayan Boradia, are the real stars of this enterprise. Rajat seems to have got a tailor-made role and he sinks his teeth into it. Aayan, the child actor, displays the vulnerability beautifully. His tender expressions and soulful eyes convey so much!

SPRING DOSA
PANEER AUR PUDINA NAAN
Ingredients Dosa Batter 4 cups Oil 2 tablespoons + to shallow fry Onion , thinly sliced 1 medium Carrots, grated 2 large Bean sprouts 1/2 cup Green capsicum, cut into thin strips , seeded1 large Cabbage, shredded 1/4 small Light soy sauce 1/2 tablespoon White pepper powder 1/2 teaspoon Salt to taste Sichuan sauce 1 tablespoon Spring onions with greens, finely chopped 1/2 cup
Ingredients Refined flour (maida) rotis 4 cups, Baking powder 1 teaspoon, Soda bicarbonate 1/2 teaspoon, Salt to taste, Sugar 2 teaspoons, Egg 1, Milk 1 cup. Yogurt 2 tablespoons, Oil 2 tablespoons, Onion seeds (kalonji) 2 teaspoons, Butter as required, Stuffing, Cottage cheese (paneer), grated 800 grams, Oil 3 tablespoons, Cumin seeds 2 teaspoons, Onions 2 medium, Green chillies, chopped 4, Coriander and mint chutney 1/2 cup, Salt to taste.
Method Heat two tablespoons oil in a wok. Add onion and sautĂˆ till transluscent. Add carrot, bean sprouts, green capsicum, cabbage and stir. Add soy sauce, white pepper powder, salt and toss. Add Sichuan sauce and toss again. Add spring onion greens and take it off the heat. Add salt to the dosa batter and whisk well.Heat a tawa and season it. Put a ladle full of batter and spread thinly. Drizzle some oil all round. Place the stuffing on one end and fold the other end over the stuffing. Serve hot immediately.

Method Sieve refined flour with baking powder, soda bicarbonate and salt into a deep bowl. Add sugar, egg, milk, yogurt and sufficient water and knead into a medium soft dough. Apply oil. Cover with a damp muslin cloth and set aside for one hour. For the stuffing heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds. When they begin to change colour add onions and green chillies and saute on medium heat for a minute. Add Coriander and Mint Chutney and continue to sautĂˆ for another minute. Add grated paneer and salt, toss well and transfer onto a plate to cool. Divide into eight equal portions. Knead the dough again and divide it into eight equal portions. Make round balls and dust them with flour. Flatten each ball and shape them into four- inch discs using a rolling pin. Place one portion of paneer mixture on the disc, gather the edges together and shape into a ball again. Sprinkle one fourth teaspoon of kalonji, press lightly and roll out into a seven-inch diameter disc using a rolling pin. Similarly make the remaining naans. Heat a pressure cooker. Rub a wet hand on one side of the naan, gently stick the dampened side to the inner wall of the pressure cooker. Take care to apply enough water while sticking the naan. Place the cooker over the flame upside down so that the open end is towards the flame. Cook on high heat for two to three minutes then reduce the heat and cook for two to three minutes more. Straighten the cooker and gently dislodge the naan from the cooker wall. Cut into quarters and serve hot with a dollop of butter.
